Does anyone know what is going on with the White Castle near Addison/Elston/Kedzie?
There is a construciton fence up around the property. I'm guessing it's being remodeled or torn down.

Aldi Development Presentation

The Bucktown Community Organization is hosting a meeting this week hearing proposals on zoning changes for 2339-59 North Seeley & 2332-34 North Elston in Bucktown.
And a presentation of the ALDI project.

Thought those of us in Logan Square who shop there, or are interested in development, might like to attend. I'm assuming the meeting is open to those who would like to hear about the ALDI project. Wed. 7-8pm. Bucktown Library.

$100 Rush Hour parking ticket.

Does this restriction start before or after the sign? I took this picture from where I was parked ( on the corner.) You can see the sign about a third block up. I have been parking here for 2 years with no problems but if I am wrong I will park somewhere else. I could google it but every blockers tend to know it all..

  • i got caught on one of those rush hour spots on armitage near calf. i'd been parking there on weekends (so no rush hour) this was summer and the single sign for the whole block was in the middle of a bush. weird when one sign covers a whole block, but guess it does.

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

I asked a Police Officer and she said it covers the entire block. Looks like I am out $100.

Structural analysis of our home

Any ideas for someone to come analyze the structure of our home? Recently we have a few cracks along some kitchen wall seems and a few hardwood floor slats that seem to be slightly separating.

  • Thank you everone. This is super helpful.

  • Another vote for Clark Baurer. Our condo association worked with him, and were very pleased. He also lives in the neighborhood himself, so you would be supporting one of your neighbors.

1411/1412 Beat Meeting on Feb. 26

The beat meeting for 1411/1412, which had been postponed due to snow, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7pm. Beat meetings are held at St. Nicolai Church, 3000 N. Kedzie Ave.

In addition to the usual information about crime statistics, police alerts, significant arrests and neighborhood occurrences, this meeting will also feature a information on bicycle theft prevention.
With Spring approaching (allegedly), people will be using their bikes more often. With more bikes out, the number of bicycle thefts increases in spring/summer. Get some tips from CPD members who are also cyclists on protecting your bike from theft.

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

Due to time constraints, the bike theft tips will be at April's meeting. Still worth attending!

Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

  • thanks gayle and michael for the links...which i used to see that there were permit denials in jan and feb for the old ronny's site...so frustrating.

  • I went by Tumbao on my way home from voting today and saw workers going in and out. Clearly something is happening in the space, even if it's not Scofflaw related.

** BEWARE of SEX OFFENDERS in these homes

I belong to Family Watchdog which is a sight that will send you automatic updates when a sex offender moves in to your neighborhood. The latest offenders are living at the following addresses.
Andrew Weller 2755 N. Mozart - child pornography and molestation of a child.
Jason Martinez 3130 N. Kimball Apt. 1 - Aggravated sexual assault.
You are surrounded by offenders and the best way to keep you family and children clear of these folks is to sign up http://www.familywatchdog.us/ and you will know where, who and why these folks are on here. You never know who's living next door.

I agree with MelindaLongfordPower, these people have served their time and been deemed safe to release. Yes, be careful around them (like any other felon), but they are now free and need a place to live, and to restart their lives. If we treated them like ordinary people, perhaps they'd be less likely to re-offend and go back to jail.

Keep in mind too that there are a lot of people listed in sex offender registries who really shouldn't be there. Examples include an 18-year-old who had sex with a 17-year-old (depending on the state), or two 14-year-olds "sexting" with each other. Don't assume the worst.

retail space in logan

Does anybody know how one might go about getting information on available retail space in the area?

I live the neighborhood and have noticed so many empty storefronts on Milwaukee Ave. just west of the square. I can't find any info on whether these are available, who owns them, or how to get in touch with the landlord. It seems like such prime space yet so much of that stretch is sitting empty.

Appreciate your thoughts!

Usually held to the side of the building. Line forms, but I kept my dog in the car until it was my turn. Shots, etc. We had a good experience. The prices are good if this is what you are looking for. This location is run by amazing people. I've gone here for years.

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

Yeah if you get on the Pet Supplies Plus email list they send you emails about these. they're really just vaccine clinics, though, not sick pet care and no spay/neuter.

Anti Cruelty, Treehouse, and PAWS (the one on 26th street) all have free or low cost spay neuter in the city. There's also usually a $40 discount at private vets during february (yeesh this month goes by fast!)

The Bryan and Amanda Bickell Foundation sometimes sponsors low-cost vaccine clinics, but they're usually on the south or west sides.

The Dead Reunion Show Rejection Letter?

Hi all. I met a lot of people at the post office on California while sending my mail in order for tickets who were doing the same. I was wondering if anyone in our area has received rejection letters or any news on tickets? I haven't gotten anything so hoping some of you have some updates? Thanks all!

  • Question for my fellow rejects (who used western union money orders)...
Based on this western union website, it looks like there is a $15 processing fee for EACH money order return (and it takes 30 days!). Please tell me I'm reading this wrong, or there is a way around it...
    I'm feeling dumb and ill.

Logan Square Internet Providers

Anyone know of any alternatives to Comcast for Internet? They were the only provider servicing my area in 2010, but I'm getting pretty tired of high fees and constant outages. Curious if anyone has any tips for keeping it under $70/month—or better yet, an alternate provider. Looks like other options could include ATT or RCN...I'm just not sure if they service Logan Square currently. Thanks in advance!

  • The Crusty Pirate Old crotchety pirate captain (retired)

I've found that the best alternative to Comcast - is Comcast.

Call and tell them you can't handle their outrageous bills anymore - tell them you want to quit all services and they'll set you up with a reasonable plan.

My continuing saga with AT&T - which I am calling "why can't I could quit you?"....

I upgraded from AT&T DSL about a year ago, switched to their U-Verse,18Mbps plan with a 1 yr promo....decent price . So, the year is up, my rate went up, and I come to find out that they no longer offer the U-Verse 18Mbps service in my area, (Logan Square/Humboldt Park) it now maxes out at 6Mbps.....not fast enough for me, as I also work from home a lot.

I have to say, as far as customer service goes, once you get through to someone, they are very accommodating. The best way to get to the right person seems to be by posting on their FB Page.....I find just calling doesn't really work, and only adds to the frustration.

They are sending someone out today, to work on a "network issue," what ever that really means. But the fact here is, that if they can't provide me with a higher speed, I have to change providers.....and so the question is, which devil do I choose? AT&T is my known devil, and I do have some absurd loyalty. What to do? What to do?

    Suggestions?

    Thanks

    Ellen

At the eastern end of Logan Blvd ~100 unofficial factsheets were posted on residential entryways & parked vehicles claiming that 3 blocks of streetside parking would be prohibited for a significant timespan due to the filming of a tv show. It included a paragraph on the beneficence of such operations to the neighborhood & municipal economy, which I initially granted with indifference, until someone raised the question of limits to the rights of residents vis-à-vis the film production, & who mediates their claims? Perhaps they do have a permit, perhaps the streets are public property & generate municipal revenue, perhaps they do benefit nearby businesses, but do they have the right to occupy a neighborhood without the consent of the residents, or to arbitrarily cancel numerous taxpayers' parking places, or to take exclusive ownership of the profits on residents' maintainence of neighborrhood ambience, how is the Alderman speaking for or accountable to their constitutents, ...?
While not intending to be so pessimistic or litigious, I'm more interested in neighbors' standpoint on this filming, so what are your thoughts?

Maybe remove the cr-p while they are sitting there.

The Italian restaurant, which Hasson, 30, describes as a modern diner, is slated to open this summer in Logan Square.

Chicago-based Kudan Realty's Brian Laskov sold the 2,800-square-foot space at 2833 W. Armitage Ave., once a Ukrainian nightclub, to Hasson's parents, Albert and Marlee Hasson, who are backing the project. The Italian-driven menu will change seasonally and feature homemade pasta and flatbread pizzas made with local ingredients.

"I've worked hard and put in a lot of hours for other people, and now I'll be doing that for myself," the younger Hasson said. He's cooking at Salero on Randolph Street's restaurant row while he gets his new restaurant up and running.

Hasson said his experience at fine-dining establishments has helped him hone his attention to detail. He wants his restaurant to be "approachable; to serve really good food at a fair price."

Why is the Alderman's block plowed to pavement and cars are getting stuck a few feet away?

The block of Troy between Bloomingdale and Wabansia got plowed and salted (to the pavement) but stopped at the end of the block, just before the corner of Troy and Wabansia, where cars have still be getting stuck regularly, on the hour. Wabansia is also a mess. They did a great job on just that one block. Weird huh, to plow and salt one block, right? It's the block where the Alderman, Maldonado lives. Coincidence?

  • I have noticed this for other alderman over the years. I was informed several years ago that aldermen get plowed out first so that they can get out and help the rest of us. Not judging -- just reporting what I was told.

  • I don't think any city worker wants to look bad to the Alderman or other official. I've always wished I lived on the block of an alderman or other elected official. That seems to be one of the perks.

Police Out ticketing

Just a heads up to anyone having to deal with street parking, make sure you're parking legally, and not just parking your car where ever it fits. When I took my dogs out this am there were at least 4 cars that had been ticketed. I guess they were all parking violations (too close to stop signs, blocking the hydrant), one of them seemed random, it was parked on the street, not blocking a hydrant or driveway or anything else, but the windshield wipers were sticking up on that car, is that not allowed?

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

Probably didn't have the right permit for the zone. And it's not the cops anymore, it's the department of revenue.

  • They also ticket if you're parked too far from the curb. Tough to get close enough in this weather, but weather doesn't seem to get you a free pass.

  • Wonder why they havent found the person that thinks their dug out spot in front of the fire hydrant is legal on my block.

Blowing and drifting snow has made many alleys and side streets impassable- The city does not pl;ow alleys for those wondering about that.

  • A big THANK YOU to my neighbors in the Kimball/Wrightwood block! In the past I've shoveled from my garage out to the street because I have a puny car. That means everyone in between my garage and the street (about 7 garages) reaped the benefit.
Yesterday, everything in the alley was shoveled, including the apron of the alley!
    Thank you Kimball neighbors!
