Experiences with apartment searching in early spring/late winter?

Hello Everyone!

I am looking for people who have had experiences with searching for apartments with April 1st least start dates. Our current lease ends at the end of September, but our landlord made us an offer to extend our lease to the end of March. I have tried searching the web for information regarding what the rental market looks like during that time, but haven't really found anything.

We know that the October 1st lease starting time is one of the busiest and most fast paced rental seasons, but we may not be able to invest the time in August and September that is needed to snap up a nice apartment so we are seriously considering the April start date alternative.

So I am asking if any of you have any experience with the April start date rental market. Do there tend to be a decent amount of properties available in a variety of neighborhoods? Do the prices fluctuate at all? Is it silly to think that the market at that time won't be as ideal?

Any and all information or anecdotes you could send our way would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • My last two moves have been during March and April. I've had quite a good selection of apartments to choose from.

  • Tom Zullo Lakeview Resident 16 years and counting!

I am a landlord and being a native for many years in Chicago, I see May as the biggest month for rental opportunities and through the summer. People typically move here after graduation and or with a young family with the intention in being settled before fall hits. That said, rental agreements cycle or renew (or not) May through Summer months.

Looking for a Veterinary Clinic

Good Morning,
I am a new pet parent of a cat. Just starting to looking around for vets. The closest to me is "Higgins Animal Clinic" I was wondering what do you think? Thank you so much for your help!

  • I like Jewell Animal Hospital and Duke Animal Hospital. Both are great places!

  • If you have a car, I'd suggest perhaps going to the suburbs. My vet here in the city quoted me $1500 for my dog's dental cleaning and a few extractions. The exact same procedure in a western suburb is going to cost less than $400. I understand that expenses are far more substantial in the city but an $1110 difference? No. I'll never return to my vet here in the city.

Bike-shop mechanics help cops nab bicycle thieves

Hours earlier, the owner of the bike, an interior designer from Lake View, had emailed the folks at Heritage Bikes, 2959 N. Lincoln Ave., who had sold him the custom-built bicycle.

This article has 1 other Chicago location (Show)

The bike was listed for $200. Sam volunteered to pose as a buyer. The sellers chose the location, a McDonald’s parking lot at Kedzie and Wilson.

Before I undertook my studies, Alpana directed me to The Court of Master Sommeliers (www.mastersommeliers.org), who offer a syllabus of recommended literature and three levels of testing, if that interests you. If you're looking for something more fun and casual, I can always help. If you want to study wine a bit and have fun doing it, check my website out to see if it appeals to you (www.thegrapesimple.com). That way, you can invite friends over, enjoy a few beverages, and get some instruction while doing it. Otherwise, The Chopping Block is good. Good luck, and have fun!

  • Check out Joe's Wine Cellar on Division, they are starting up some beginner classes. http://www.joeswinecellar.com/events/wine-101-class/?month=7&year=2014&categoryID=&relatedID=

The car is still there. I'll get this re-opened. The car has not moved since two street cleanings ago. It still has a parking ticket from the most recent street cleaning.

UPDATE: The car has been removed! Nice to have another spot back on our block!

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

Her contract probably prevents her from sharing this information. I would wait a couple of months, then check HealthGrades for updated office informaion

Homemade Pizza Company closed all locations

RIP #HomemadePizzaCo. Looks like all locations are closed, and their Facebook and Twitter are deleted. This is an L3 building so we'll see what happens next.

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2014/05/rip-homemade-pizza-company.html

  • Matt 10-year Lakeview resident

They must have left some food behind because the Southport storefront is now littered with dead flies...such an eyesore, creeps me out each time I walk past it on my commute. Shocked that the chain closed, they must have overexpanded--this location had a line of customers every evening.

  • Personally, I never understood the business model. I bought pizzas from them twice and stopped after I realized I could get a pizza made, and delivered to me for the same price as this place. Did I mention that the delivered pizza was already made? I didn't have to cook it myself.

I found them to be overpriced for what they were offering.

Guy with baseball cap crouches down by the fence door to 3 unit condo facing Janssen, adjacent to northside of alley. Tries to open gate. It doesn't open easily so he tries to pop it open by leaning his body into it.
I yell "hey." He looks around then resumes attempt. I yell "Get out of here." He sees me and then takes off running westbound down alley. Called 911, operator was great, and they put some cops on it. Never saw where the Caucasian male went.

The brazen, daylight event during the midst of commuters going back and forth from garages was pretty remarkable. Keep your heads up!

  • On Monday, July 15 at 10 a.m. I observed two males of a similar description on bikes southbound in the alley between Southport and Greenview, north of Irving Park, and then on Cuyler. Their demeanor was off. They were riding slowly and looking at back gates and into back yards. One looked on one side of the alley and the other looked at the other side. I saw their faces too fast to notice more. Police responded, but did not find the riders.

  • Jim, my partner saw these guys on the 700 block of Melrose at around 9:30pm the same day you saw them. She said they were acting strangely and looked like they were casing houses. I told her to call the cops next time.

  • jim

The guys I saw did seem a bit "out of it" and weren't exactly subtle in their approach. Good idea to always call the police. Agreed.

Looking for Auto Mechanic

I need to have my transmission fluid flushed. Looking for a *trustworthy* mechanic. Any recommendations? Thanks.

  • ReNae just a resident

I agree with Craig Tucker. I took my car there and was very happy with the work there.

  • Agree with all the recs for Ashland Tire and Auto. Best guys around! My car crapped out so I'm car-less these days, but I had my piece-of-junk car in there all the time. Totally trust them and never felt like I was being scammed for repairs that weren't needed. I miss them! :)

LV2 Parking For Wrigley Concerts

And we're about to hit another round of concerts this weekend at Wrigley and yet again expect to have our aldermen do nothing about parking enforcement for the LV2 area yet again.

Please notify your alderman if you see any violations:

Capelman - Info@james46.org 773-878-4646 https://twitter.com/JamesCappleman

Tunney (who doesn't really care for many reasons) ward44@cityofchicago.org 773.525.6034 https://twitter.com/AldTomTunney

Let them know that ordinance O2013-846 needs to be passed!

  • MayorOf47 W. Lakeview/Roscoe Village

And the Cubs themselves of course.
    Game day hotline: 866-4-CPD-TOW

  • If you take a look at the night game amendment ordinance SO2013-4079 (https://chicago.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=2531900&GUID=8C948AD7-5029-4072-B78B-D02543AFDB4C), specifically paragraph 8 subsection d, you will see that the Cubs, in this case, are required to abide by the provisions of the neighborhood protections passed in City Council in 2004 (http://docs.chicityclerk.com/journal/2004/feb11_2004/feb11_2004_part3optimize.pdf) and subsequently in 2013 whenever...

Those provisions involve, amongst other things, the LV2 parking program.

Although the ordinance you cite above did not pass City Council, the intent of the ordinance was incorporated into the new night baseball game ordinance. Therefore, LV2 is in force during concert events at Wrigley Field attracting more than 12,500 visitors. You may also notice that this year that the LV2 double yellow signs that list the game dates around the LV2 neighborhoods also read 'Concerts TBD.'

LV2 should be enforced during the concerts on July 18th and 19th this year. No further legislation is necessary to make this happen.

  • MayorOf47 W. Lakeview/Roscoe Village

Thanks Jimbo. I've read it in depth and have communicated with Pawar's office my frustration that the Cubs do nothing to enforce it for the last few years - and Schulter before that.
The signs are there, they're just ignored by parking enforcement and the Cubs as they were last year when they first included the concert wording.

I find it frustrating that on the Cubs community newsletter they state:
"Parking Restrictions for the Show Days:
Irving Park Road from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street
Clark Street from Irving Park Road to Roscoe Street
Racine Avenue (East Side) from Patterson Avenue to Addison Street
Addison Street from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street "
It neglects to state that ANY neighborhood parking restrictions are in effect for those dates.

Regardless, contact your alderman and the Cubs hotline if you have any problems in your neighborhood.

"broken computer" phone scam ?

I have been receiving calls on my land line from people claiming to be from "Windows" and "Microsoft", a very heavy Indian accent. I was told there is a problem with my computer, told the caller that I did not have one, and she insisted that there were something wrong with my computer. I hung up. I have the feeling this is a scam that are tricking people into giving up personal information or something of the like. Last evening around 8:45pm, a man "Jacob" called he said "your computer is broken and it is breaking the internet" This time I spoke in polish and he hung up. Has anyone else been receiving similar calls?

  • icepackmac NorthCenter, St.Ben's,Lakeview & Lincoln Square Li

    obviously too many people "fall" for it & so many are intimidated and bullied into it I agree with Verena plus the callers are so well "trained" and/or are sociopathic & listen to their "marks" voice/tone;

  • Ann in Lakeview 30+ years in Lakeview

Thank you all for your comments. I am one senior who will not fall victim to those scammers. I received another one of those phone calls from a "Joe" who also had a heavy accent. I told the scammer to "go jump in a lake" and he hung up.
