Priest Won't Be Alone With Kids During Re-Opened Child Sex Probe

Rev. Michael W. O’Connell was reinstated at St. Alphonsus Church at 1429 W. Wellington Ave. on April 17, when law enforcement authorities could not find evidence to support an earlier claim of sexual misconduct with a minor at a south suburban parish from 20 years ago.

  • McVicker's View Gladstone Park

Anyone following this story will know that since O'Connell was reinstated, another sexual abuse charge against him has been filed, and the Cook County Sheriff's Office has reopened their investigation of him.

As for the first allegation, other media reports have claimed law enforcement authorities could not find ENOUGH evidence to charge him.

  • What bothers me most in this story is the presumption of guilt. It used to be in our country a person was presumed innocent until proven guilty. His reputation was not smeared in the media simply by accusation. But now, if you're a priest, and someone says you molested someone,...

What bothers me most in this story is the presumption of guilt. It used to be in our country a person was presumed innocent until proven guilty. His reputation was not smeared in the media simply by accusation. But now, if you're a priest, and someone says you molested someone, well, then I guess you did.

I personally know someone who came forward after he found out a priest at the parish he grew up in pleaded guilty to molestation, and claimed he also was molested. The priest had no recollection of ever even knowing him. This person I know is a creep and criminal, and was broke, but he was awarded a settlement, because they assumed the priest was lying and the guy was telling the truth. I doubt the molestation ever happened. I think the priest did molest other boys. I just don't think he molested that guy.

I wonder if how SNAP accusers would feel if someone accused them of a crime, say robbery, and then they were treated as if they were guilty by their employer, neighbors, and their face was plastered all over the media, repeating the allegation over and over, as if it were true.
We used to respect the rule of law in this country, but politics and sensationalism in news stories has taken over. And it's a shame.

First food trucks and now pedicabs: Tunney's uprooting another progressive industry

The City Council’s Transportation and License Committees will review next week a proposal from Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) to regulate pedicabs in Chicago and some language in the legislation has owners of the bicycle taxis concerned the ordinance may regulate them out of existence, if it passes.

The City Council’s Transportation and License Committees will review next week a proposal from Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) to regulate pedicabs in Chicago and some language in the legislation has owners of the bicycle taxis concerned the ordinance may regulate them out of existence, if it passes.

The ordinance, introduced by Tunney last May, would cap the number of pedicabs at 200 and require them to post fare information, follow the rules of the road and meet safety standards such as require seat belts for passengers and have proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance. But there is another caveat in the final draft being presented to the Transportation and License committees that would ban pedicabs in the Loop and on State Street and Michigan Avenue, from Congress Parkway to Oak Street, during rush hours. That’s a sizable area and, on one level, we can understand wanting to keep those streets free for other traffic. The Chicago Pedicab Association, however, sees this as a poison pill.

"This is going to potentially destroy the pedicab industry in Chicago. We won't be able to navigate the Loop and River North areas or pick up passengers in any of these areas," said board member T.C. O'Rourke.

“The Loop, Michigan Avenue and State Street are the most pedestrian- and tourist-oriented areas of the city. Many pedicab operators make the bulk of their income working in these areas. They’re where the people are. Essentially, it would make working in the Loop and River North virtually impossible. We wouldn’t be able to showcase these iconic streets. The rest of the ordinance is tolerable, but not this part.”

New Building

There seems to be a new building going up on the west side on the 3500 block of north Halsted. This has been used as a parking lot since the mid 80's when the original structure burned down. Does anyone know what's being built here?

Please tell me this isn't really happening. Did my neighbors really just put two chairs out to claim dibs?

In the past, we've had a mixture of fantastic managers to "just okay" managers. Our board brought it to the boss's attention. They agreed to assign us a new property manager. Hopefully, the next prop. mgr will be better. This company has also started to lose their personal touch as they have gotten bigger and bigger. It's gone from feeling like a Mom & Pop type biz to a corporate biz.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Another unit owner and I were wondering how challenging it would be to become self-managed? Anyone doing this? Do you pay this person(s)?

Landlord Responsibility?

I contacted my landlord in February about the fact that my smoke detector doesn't work, and then again in March. I am still waiting for a new one. He lives in my building, so one would think he'd be a little more concerned about fire safety. I know it's the landlord's responsibility to provide a smoke detector and since it's only a few dollars, I could certainly go out and buy one, but I'd like to know what my rights are as a tenant and what actions I can take?

Beware of Energy Plus - Stick with ComEd

What was going on was that every month their charge went up by mere pennies, but last month the electric bill was about $30 more than it should be. This winter we all saw higher bills of course because of the brutal winter. If you are using Energy Plus, call ComEd and cancel it. If you are considering signing up, read the fine print and cancel as soon as you can after getting the miles....or better yet, learn from my mistake and steer clear and warn your friends.

There is a recent post on here where someone did the math and broke it all down. I don't remember the exact title but it had "integrys" in it. In that thread he talks about the hidden charges. :)

lauren, that is unrelated/different though really, just to avoid the confusion it's not lumped as the same issue. This actually was a good deal, and there were no hidden fees for the duration. So the calculation and sites (CUB, etc) that talk about this would lead you to believe it...

lauren, that is unrelated/different though really, just to avoid the confusion it's not lumped as the same issue. This actually was a good deal, and there were no hidden fees for the duration. So the calculation and sites (CUB, etc) that talk about this would lead you to believe it was a savings--it was for me for over a year. The calculation in question for anyone having this issue would have been done a full year ago+ to be having this issue, then after that year they change the rates to variable. You could do the same calculation today and come up that Energy Plus had no hidden fees and that it was a better deal, but the issue is what happens after the 12 month period if/when it becomes variable.

Commercial fishing on lakefront around Belmont Harbor?

Last week I noticed a weird foam about 15 ft out on the water in an extensive ring. I asked a scientist friend who knows about such things. He said that the local fisherman have taken to the disgraceful practice of using fire extinguishers to push out 20 or more lines to catch fish and the foam is a result of the froth from the extinguishers.
Today I saw men dragging big carts of items such as extinguishers, various multi fishing lines, many large buckets and other equipment. etc over to the lakefront. Is this commercial fishing? What are they doing with the fish they catch? Are Lake Michigan fish being sold to local restaurants?

Give me a nice rod and reel setup, a couple of brews, and a 70 degree breezy day and I will take a nice fight from a scrappy fish. What happened to 'anglers'? :)

Anyhow, it isn't a guarantee that everyone is using only compressed air in the extinguishers. However, foam can come from multiple variables and sometimes is pretty normal, especially in the ocean harbors. Niagara falls is beautiful, til you get on the boat, look down and it looks like refuse from washing a bear with shampoo. If it's abnormal for that area (the foam) you can always find a resource to report it to.

As for these fishing methods, there are clear rules as to how many lines/poles per licensed person, how many hooks on each line, daily limit quantity and size, etc. In IL you can have 3 rods per angler and up to two hooks per rod. So technically one lure with two treble hooks constitutes two hooks. If they are toting around 100 hooks with 10 on each line, that's illegal, and if they are using shopping carts I HIGHLY doubt anyone you see is commercial. Commercial actually harvest in worse ways...

In WI, the DNR (dept. natural resources) handles these matters.
I would be more worried about the amount of hooks/lines per person than anything. People like that tend to be haphazard as well. Would be great for that kind of barbed wire to wash up on shore huh?

Ants!

It is spring and the ants have begun to march. In our experience last year, the little roundish traps didn't do enough. So, I think we need an exterminator. I'm okay with them doing what they need to do outside the house. But, I'm worried about the interior. I don't want the chemicals in the house and substances like vinegar don't seem to work well enough. Will hiring an exterminator just for the outside be sufficient? Any exterminator recommendations? Any ant removal recommendations?

Thanks

  • Steve Vance Thrice Decades on Melrose St.

Cinnamon eh? I'm giving this a shot in the next week as I get them from tiny crevices and cracks that sometimes sitting the Terro traps by is near impossible.

  • Patricia 25 Year Lakeview Resident

Important distinction: Carpenter ants--the big black ants--are like termites and very destructive. For them, I'd go with a professional exterminator. The little ants are an icky nuisance and can be dealt with by ant traps or cinnamon. Nievka, I love your description of a "tiny cinnamon wall."
