Panera Bread at Ashland and School Falls Through; Target Development Not Happening

According to the latest flyers from Cushman &Wakefield, Panera Bread is no longer coming to Ashland and School and they are re-releasing it to market. Vitamin Shoppe is a go, and Target is no longer pictured on the map.

If you're interested in the origin of our name, it refers to the 4-hour time blocks called "Shifts" that we offer to use our space. We came up with it as a fun play on the term "work shifts." Hope that helps to answer your question. Feel free to drop by anytime for a tour of our space, we're always excited to meet our neighbors!

Dirt disposal

Any idea how to get rid of old dirt from container gardens? Looks like the yard waste disposal doesn't include soil. I have 20-30 gallons of potting soil used with vegetables for one season. Thoughts on where I can put this?

Found Cat: Grey & White

For the past 4 days there has been a grey & white cat hanging around my house near Seminary & Eddy. He/She seems like an indoor cat, looks very soft & clean. I've tried a few times to get it to come to me, but have not had any luck. Thought it would be a good idea to post in case someone is looking for her. If I'm able to bring her inside, I will take her to PAWS.

  • Thanks for posting and trying to help his kitty. You can also post on Lost Cats Illinois via Facebook, a picture would help too. Poor thing is probably hungry and freezing out there. If you're able to get her/him inside you could also try taking her to a local vet to scan for a microchip.

  • Thanks for posting. If it wouldn't be too much hassle you might try to lure the cat with some wet food (very cheap), and then take her/him to get checked for a microchip. I'm sure he/she is just scared and has a home somewhere!

There will be a referendum about the planned CTA “Flyover” on the Nov. 4 Election Ballot in the #20, 36 & 38 precincts of the 44th ward. Vote NO to protect Central Lakeview!

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

  • The water, like the metal of the elevated structure, was likely quite cold and the tracks were getting hit with spray driven by the wind. Most of the heat from the fire rises upward, without traveling laterally, and given the extreme cold that morning it likely wasn't close enough to heat up the elevated. Further the firemen would have continued to douse the building long after obvious visible signs of fire were extinguished (in order to prevent any smoldering embers from reigniting).

  • Thanks, Hank, I hadn't checked the news, only what I saw out the window from the train.

Stop giving Bistro Dre your money

Hey all,

After a tip from an associate, I keep a pretty close eye on Bistro Dre's Yelp page. If you dig enough, you'll find a few reviews that walk the line between absurd and terrifying. Drunken antics by Dre in the dining room in the midst of service are not rare. At night, from time to time, I hear Dre berating one of his staff members (yes, it's loud and aggressive enough to hear from a distance).
All this to say, on Saturday night a yelp review mentions and an assault on one of his wait staff who was trying to calm him down.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/bistro-dre-chicago?hrid=FTHYV_Fxc-sDn2HgcvjnDA
http://www.yelp.com/biz/bistro-dre-chicago?hrid=ILRsAO5QfKAMM8IHdwQh4Q

My thoughts on writing this are two-fold.
Dre should not be in business. He's a madman with a terrified staff under his thumb.
But, the staff is awesome, kind, smart and hardworking.
Are there any other business owners or hiring managers who could approach the staff at Dre to get them out of there?

At the very least, Lakeview, stop giving Dre your money.

  • I went there once. Food was great, but towards the end of our meal a woman who seemed like a manager started screaming at our waiter, in the middle of the restaurant. This went on for several minutes. And I believe it had something to do with rolling silverware. I thought it was horribly unprofessional. Our waiter had given us good service.

  • I once worked for someone who sound exactly like the owners of Dre. I will never put myself in that position again and now that I have a heads up I'll never visit that establishment. People who feel like they can berate others (period), let alone in front of their patrons have no business being in business. Shame on them.

If you had your booted car Removed from Oakdale and PineGrove 11-19

The revenue agent took the boot off, they attached a chain to the front wheel, pulled the car out of the parking space, sent a few parts of the body and/or suspension flying into the street - I got these pics and don't know what happened next. They were not very gentle with the procedure.

I decided to give Uber one chance despite all of the bad press out there about then (taking illegal advantages, poor service, risky un-trained drivers, etc). This is because they had e-mailed me a 'one free ride' offer to test out their service.

The offer had not been thought through so did not work. I found that Uber has no live person to speak with (only service by e-mail), so I ordered a car. I found that the driver could not help me either, so just ended up getting out and taking a taxi.

I complained via e-mail and received a reply the next day. It basically was a generic message directing me where to input a 'promo code' - when the problem stated was that there WAS no promo code provided.

Save yourself some frustration and stay away from this 'service'.

  • It was an off-the-cuff comment that the executive retracted.

  • No doubt because Uber's legal counsel and their board ordered him to do so. Retracting does not mean that he didn't fully intend that action.

Is Target back in the mix in Lakeview?

"Target's impending arrival appears to have sparked no such opposition, according to Bennett Lawson, chief of staff to Ald. Tom Tunney of Lakeview's 44th Ward." If you oppose, call Mr. Lawson, he thinks we don't care. Article was in Friday, November. 14th Crain's Chicago business. This is news to the neighbors, we were told they didn't know what Novak was building.

  • L...your little example of Clark Street is rarity. Plus if I know the location you are speaking of; its due to that specific landlord(s) waiting out the flat commercial market & conservative lending market to tear down all the outdated (1) story little storefronts to put in a 8-10 story midrise there on the west side of the block. BTW...my examples are EVERYWHERE. Almost 40-50% of new construction and existing storefronts on busy streets in the entire north side are vacant. Open your eyes.

  • @ Hank - you are correct. The stretch on Clark from Wellington to Fullerton is block after block after block of empty storefronts. It's a shell of what it was ten years ago. It's sad.

Also, re. not revealing the names of the business owners: Apparently that has to do, in part, with Illinois law. The secrecy is a requirement in the original law. So while apparently some prospective owners have outed themselves, our lawmakers wrote the law that way. So perhaps your questions about transparency and being forthcoming, etc., are better elected at elected representatives: Why did you think this secrecy was so critical that you allowed it to become law?

The cash situation is a real problem, I agree. But it will go away very soon. There are plenty of local solutions (i.e. Banks that do not operate outside of the state of Illinois, and therefore not afraid of federal laws on the matter, rulings from the office of the comptroller of currency, or RICO statutes) that will sprout up soon. And once the fees are fat enough, national banks will wade in, lobby for regulatory permission (which is starting to occur already), and then this debate about large amounts of cash will go away.

For those of you who argued this point, I am curious whether you would be capable of changing your mind if these patients and the dispensary itself were using credit? I live close but not close enough to worry about the cash problem. So I am open minded, but I seem to be in the minority on this EveryBlock thread.

I lost my keys the other day on the side walk. I returned to where I thought they would be; when I returned, they were not there. I walked around some other places, and came back again to the same spot, did a more thorough search, and still couldn't find them. I got a flashlight and came back one last time. I spent 5 minutes searching the third time I came back. RIGHT when I was about to leave, a guy came up and asked what I was doing. I told him I was searching for my keys. It turns out, he had them. He had been walking around trying to find me!

Much thanks to that individual, but you freaked me out! I was in total panic mode!

If you were never told as a kid to stay where you are if you are lost, and someone will find you, I think that guide applies here.

If you find someones keys, they will likely return or trace their steps to find them; leave them! If you really feel the urge to take them and find their home, at the very least, leave a note.

  • loraine t washington 5 yr. resident

    That is a good idea.

  • You have obviously gotten loads of grief for this, but I understand the frustration. I was in a Walmart looking at paint once, and set my keys on the shelf while I was kneeling down looking at some stuff on the end cap. Not the brightest move ever, but they were there for less than two minutes when someone grabbed them to "be helpful." It took me 15 minutes to track them down, and a load more anxiety.
