Bunny on the loose

I saw what is believed to be a domestic rabbit in the Ravenswood alley between Grace and Waveland last night around 8:00 P.M.. He was slightly closer to Waveland cruising around the trash and recycle bins. He was a caramel/butterscotch color. Please be on the lookout and help get to safety at Red Door Animal Shelter.

So, what's going happening on Waveland and Sheffield outside Wrigley?

Last week, they put up barricades along the sidewalks on the west side of Sheffield and the south side of Waveland. And they took out a lane of parking on both streets, too, redrawing lanes for vehicular traffic. The "no parking" signs posted only go through Sept. 30.

Anybody have any idea what's going on here?

    Dear Neighbor,

We wanted to keep you updated on the progress toward renovation and expansion of Wrigley Field. Today, crews will begin relocating underground public works and utility infrastructure in preparation for the renovation and expansion of Wrigley Field.

The City of Chicago Department of Water Management, Peoples Gas and Commonwealth Edison will be performing work to relocate underground water, sewer and gas lines. This work will take place under the street and the parkway on the east side of Sheffield Avenue.

Sheffield Avenue will be completely closed from Thursday (8/28) through Sunday (8/31) for excavation and installation of a new main and service to the residences and businesses. Beginning Tuesday, September 2, the parkway and east lane of traffic will be closed from 8 am until two hours prior to the start of each Wrigley Field event. CDOT will allow work to proceed on game days but all work, equipment and personnel will be off site a minimum of two hours prior to the start of each Wrigley Field event.

Bikes Stolen from Closed Garage!

Hello all, Mine and my husband's bikes were stolen last night from our closed/locked, private garage which opens to alley. We've filed a police report, listed it on chicago.stolenbike.org, bikeindex.org, and posted to FB, Twitter, Find Stolen Bikes (Chicago), SBR Chicago.
New Men's Cannondale Synapse 6 Tiagra 2013 Black Road Bike (black frame, white lettering, drop handlebars, clipless pedals, front/rear LED lights)
Women's Trek 7.5 FX WSD 2010 Satin Cherry Red Hybrid Bike (red frame, white lettering, flat handlebars, rear fender only, front/rear LED lights, bell on left handle, missing wheel reflectors)
Please keep an eye out for these two bikes and message me with news/advice! Thank you so much!

  • angelranger 46 year Northside resident

@DavidL thanks for the post. Having had garage broken into twice I highly recommend watching this vid and securing the garage door manual release with nylon ties or similar. Residents: look outside and at the top of the door for forced marks just below the top door frame. Usually a 2 X 4 imprint or pry bar, just enough to snake in a coat hanger or similar and pull the release chain. Takes 5 seconds. Another scenario is a universal radio frequency transmitter could open multiple doors.

Bike thefts seem to be picking up (or at least getting more brazen) in the neighborhood - my Fuji SL1 Pro (red/black/white) was stolen on 8/8 from behind a locked gate in our back ally (Surf & Broadway). More than 1 person must have been involved to jump the gate and lift the bike up and over it. The bike is never parked there and was stolen between 9 PM and 9 AM friday night - someone was clearly out looking for items to steal - with flashlights looking into locked and gated areas. I filed a police report, stolen bike registry (local and national), etc. I wish the police had the ability to pay more attention to bike thefts - this bike was worth more than what I sold my past used car for. It's grand theft. It also seems to go with the broken windows theory... if they can get away with bike thefts or car breakins on a regular basis, what's next?

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

Hawthorne School - Field

Does anyone know if there are groups or organizations that are allowed to reserve the entire field next to the school? We were there playing with our children a few weekends ago when a huge group of people playing soccer completely overtook the entire field and essentially pushed us out.

  • Alex D Resident since 2009

There are city leagues that have the field reserved for games on some nights. Also youth leagues during the day on some weekends.

  • Frank T. Teacher in Lakeview

I coach for a school, and we have permits on us at all times in case there's a conflict.

  • I was wondering who you can contact to make a reservation or see the schedule?

What's everyone paying for Comcast (or other) cable/internet service?

Given Comcast's less than transparent pricing, I'm wondering what everyone else is paying. I negotiated Blast internet, Digital Preferred with HD, HBO, and Steampix for approx. $120/mo. We have one cable box. No DVR. No rented modem/router. How about you??

  • Anthony Boystown resident

It allows you to watch what you record on the other tivo. It also allows you to watch tv. It's just a receiver, but not a true dvr. It was part of the package when I got the tivo6 (their newest tivo). I think they include it in their whole house bundle.

Looking for an in-home petsitter for several nights

I'm looking for an in-home petsitter for my dog for a few upcoming trips. I've used a few services in the area and they've just been okay. There was one in particular with which I wasn't at all happy. I came home to all of my windows being open with the AC on, a sink full of filthy dishes and doubts about whether my dog was properly looked after. Lack of communication and general flakiness have been problems too. My dog is a very well behaved twenty pound mutt. He's an easy dog. I'm an easy owner (in more than one way!). We're near the Southport corridor. Please let me know if you have a petsitter you adore. Thank you!

  • Hi Andrea. I'm retired from a career in broadcast sales & for the last two yrs. have been pursuing my passion- loving pet care! I have numerous references & while the summer was busy, I have more openings now. Please contact me at 248-760-8977. I live in Buena Park. Looking forward to hearing from u.

Old Dominick's Site in Lakeview Will Finally be Developed

From Ald. Tom Tunney: "The site of the former Dominick’s has been vacant since the fire in 2005 and currently serves as a surface parking lot. The new five-story development will include a 71,000 square foot Mariano’s grocery store, a 40,000 square foot X-Sport Fitness, 15,000 square feet of additional retail space and 280 parking spaces. A new traffic signal will be installed at the entrance of the building and the signal at Wellington and Broadway will get a much-needed upgrade. "

  • Snappette Special Agent

Good to know! Thanks for sharing.

  • Ryan C. 15+ year Lakeview East resident

I won't believe it until Mariano's opens its doors -- this is the 3rd or 4th announcement that something will be built on that parcel...

...but I will keep my fingers crossed.

Good stuff! This will be great for the area. Let's just hope it gets completed as projected.

Debating if I should call 311 - car abandonment maybe?

There is car at the end of our street that has 2 flat back tires. I swear it hasn't moved in about 2 weeks. It was there last month, with the same 2 back tires blown out, and then it disappeared for a week and now it's back. I feel bad, but it feels like that person is using that spot as their own personal space. Should I call 311?

  • Gunnery Sgt Hartman Neighborhood Bully

Hllhouse, put down the xbox and move your damned car.

And yes, you should call 311, there's a phone app where you can take pictures of it as well. Does it have any tickets on it?

  • Yes call. I also use an app on my iPhone called chi works. You can report all kind of issues on it (potholes, city light issues, abandoned cars etc) reported one using the app, which can give address and gps tagged location, and pictures. Car was gone within the day and never seen again

Books to Donate/Sell

Hello! We have a few boxes of paperback books to donate/sell. Mostly adult and some young adult, fiction and non-fiction. We were thinking of maybe doing a book sale and donating the money. Or would it be more worthwhile to just donate the books to the local library or charity?
Recommendations/thoughts/suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

  • sue

I work for Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro and we have the World's Smallest Library in our lobby. It works like this: anyone is free to take a book at any time but, under an honor system, is expected to either bring it, or another book back at some point. This open system has worked surprisingly well and we are always open to book donations. In addition, once in a while, we do BookSwaps, after which we take leftover books to OpenBooks or other literacy programs.

  • If you have the time, take them to Uncharted Books at 2630 North Milwaukee. The owner might take a few off your hands and give you in-store credit for another book that catches your eye. Donate the rest of them; you won't get much $ from selling them on your own. Another option besides those mentioned above is the Newberry Library who run an annual book fair. http://www.newberry.org/book-fair-donations

Dog Walkers

I have noticed a great increase in the amount of doggy poop in our neighborhood. It is everywhere! Please, please, please pick up after your dog-poop everywhere is like ringing the dinner bell for rats. I know someone posted about this a few months ago, but I think it bears repeating.

  • Agree! Every time I now my front lawn, I have to walk the yard first and recently saw an increase in rats in my alley. As a dog owner myself, these people are giving us a bad wrap.

Suspicious activity-Nelson & Lakewood

A suspicious individual was seen at Nelson/Lakewood this morning. Approx 5'6, wearing an oversized grey hoodie and red sweatpants. It appears he was canvassing residences at 8am. When he caught us looking he put his hood up. Was standing on the corner looking around for several minutes. Between 9am-10am, trash cans in the alley had been moved in front of back gates, in position to jump over back fences. Lock up garages, back doors, and bikes!!

  • Thank you Snappette. I go to the Jewel at Ashland and Wellington from time to time and will keep an eye out. It might surprise Jonathon to know that he is the subject of so much comment and concern. It would be great to direct him to a place where he could get help.

  • Vashti you are correct. When the next person that sees John, please tell him to talk to his local beat cop to let him know which residences he is going to target this week to break into. He has an impressive rap sheet and it'd be nice if he didn't pull our police resources as much anymore. This will insure he gets the proper attention he needs in Cook County.
