"The laws don't apply to us" the police officer said.

Story of the day: I was biking in the rain down Division passing Wood, in the Wicker Park neighborhood headed home. The roads are wet so it's very dangerous out for bikers... I had seen a police car texting while driving. The police officers were probably from 13th District or 14th District. I called them out on texting and driving, informing them of the dangers it can potentially cause for bikers and other motorist. They pull up next to me lower the window and the female officer in the passenger seat told me to "Mind my f*cking business" I replied "He's texting and driving" The male officer driving swerving on the street and talking to me while driving suggested that "I was hating" I replied with, "I'm not hating, it's dangerous out here" He replied "THE LAWS DON'T APPLY TO US" at that moment I looked into the car and responded "We're all humans regardless of uniform" The female officer kept yelling but I'm not going to waste my time and give the cops a reason to lock up another Latino in Chicago.... "The laws don't apply to us" the police officer's words are now forever tainted into my brain.

  • Big Al WP Big Al, Your Neighborhood Pal

OK everybody, let's just chill. I have two rules of driving and now it can be expanded to include bikes. My first rule of driving is "When you drive (or ride), act like a doctor and take your "patients" with you." The other one I included in my prior post. "Don't explode, share the road." Drivers, please check your mirrors when getting out of your vehicle, so you don't "door" a biker. Everybody be safe out there.

  • Good advice, Al. Now, would it be equally prudent (and safe) for all bikers to understand they are subject to all rules of the road drivers are, including stoplights and stop signs? 3...2...1...awaiting the first bicyclist to whine that they are not. They are. I drive, I bike, I observe the traffic laws and shouldn't have to have my head on a swivel because another party - car or bike - doesn't drive or ride defensively.

Cars speeding down Hermitage to/from Kennedy

It finally happened. Last Thursday, a car heading south on Hermitage from Armitage/Kennedy hit a car that was either parallel parking or pulling out of a spot at about 1950 N. Hermitage.

I've only lived in the neighborhood a few months, but cars regularly treat this block of Hermitage like a drag strip. It's pretty alarming. The guys from Orloff auto shop drive cars around the block like it's F1 track. It's annoying.

  • Get together with your neighbors and request speed bumps from the alderman.

Canoe Rental

Does anyone have a canoe they are willing to rent out for the weekend? I've looked into rentals with retailers, but they do not allow overnight rentals. I appreciate any ideas!

Who needs a nanny in bucktown?

I have an amazing nanny whom we've had for 3 years. We got so fortunate to win the lottery and have her accepted at Drummond Montessori pre-k this year. I want to be able to keep this lovely woman who has become our family, employed full time. We would really like to pair up with a family who needs someone Monday-Friday from approx 9-3. My daughter will need picked up at school everyday at 3:30p.m. If you live in bucktown and have been looking for childcare that isn't your traditional 9-5, please contact me. I want to be able to give this wonderful gift of a woman to another family.
Thank you!

Hi - I saw a sign for PRO coming soon in the window of the old Pinch Spice Market space on Milwaukee at Western (1913 N. Milwaukee). Does anyone know who/what they are? I couldn't find anything online. I'm just curious.

Airplane Noise Complaints

Has anyone else noticed the increased number of loud airplanes overhead over the past couple months? I'm no expert in aviation, but it seems unnecessary that there is such an increase in noise pollution from these planes when Buck town/Wicker Park is ~15 miles from the airport. What gives? Does anyone have ideas on how to make our voice heard?

  • I'm outside on my roof a lot. Never noticed... I actually hear nothing. Maybe you were out a lot when the air show and practice were happening?

  • Jon Banks supervisor banks

I haven't noticed an increase in air traffic noise
and I'm on my roof deck frequently as well.
