Buses on Western Ave between wabansia and milwaukee

Can someone tell me whats going on with all these buses? They shut down parking on the east side of western ave and there have been the extended buses lined up there for a week or so. Are they learning new routes or is this something that is going to last into the summer?

I think it's stupid because we have all that already , we have ourselves and passengers covered and also anything that happens in the whole accident is covered .... They are trying to regulate us but our rideshare provider is one step ahead of the game already ... These cab drivers and their medallion holders are kicking and screaming like babies because they want it their way. They say we are taking away money from their business , but in reality ride sharing is much more organized and pleasant for the passenger . It's freedom of choice the consumer should have the option to pick who they would like to ride with we are just out here making a pretty buck just like them except we don't have the option to be flagged down in our downtime. They do have good perks but they don't look at what advantages they have , their just looking to clear out the playing field :(

    Marisa,

No, I didn't come across any sources for this. Found a few online but were expensive and you have to send the items to them. My original request item is no longer needed but should you hear of a local source, I would love to know about it. Thanks, Barbara

Car Break-ins at the Logan Square XSport

My car was broken into today at approximately 11:30 a.m. while parked on the 4th floor in the gym's parking garage. 2 other vehicles also had their passenger side windows busted out. Please be extra cautious if you park your car in that garage!

  • That really sucks. I go to that gym all the time. What were they trying to get? I hope they aren't breaking into cars for loose change.

Looking for apt/roommates in Bucktown

I am a 20-something looking for an affordable apartment in Bucktown. Ideally, not looking to spend more than $800 on rent. Also, hoping to find some cool roommates to keep the cost of living down and meet some new people.

My only requirements for an apartment are: close to the eL, available May 1st, not a garden unit and hopefully hard wood floors.

Please contact me if you are also looking for a roommate in Bucktown or if you know of a nice apartment available May 1st.

Thanks!

Bucktown ISPs

Hi, I'll be moving to Bucktown this month, and I wondered what my options were for internet service providers. I currently have RCN, but it looks like Bucktown is out of their coverage area. Does anyone have any recommendations (or horror stories) for other ISPs? Thanks.

  • Victoria Artist and Muscian

I was the one that posted the Horrible service Post about Comcast. It is now all fixed, but I took writing the CEO to get anything to happen. Unfortunatley you have limited options here.

  • thedom Chicagoan

Comcast is the only game but make sure you are using the newer modem EXCEPT for the part where they are using it for local shared WiFi.

  • Yes you can. A basic navigation of the site would have been more beneficial to you than being rude to your neighbors all this time, fyi.

Stop light at Damen and Wabansia?

Is it time for a stop light at Damen and Wabansia?
I'm not sure what the requirements are, but it is always awkwardly clogged. Thoughts? 15 seconds for Wabansia, 45 seconds for Damen?

I realize there are other considerations... traffic flow as one approaches North Ave.

  • It used to be a 2-way stop on Wabansia.

The real reason it is a 4-way, is to prevent the SB traffic queue (from the light at North ave) from gridlocking Wabansia.
Wabansia is the only cross street between North and Armitage that crosses Damen in a straight line. This...

Wabansia is the only cross street between North and Armitage that crosses Damen in a straight line. This is an important consideration for emergency vehicles.

The problem with a normal stop light, is that now it would risk the NB queue from this light, gridlocking North and Milwaukee. (only 1 block away)

A flashing 4-way red with a crossing button might work, but I do not know if I have ever seen such a configuration in the city.

V____, what you experienced is very frightening, whether it was a "Peeping Tom" or somebody casing your apartment. This is a safer alternative to carrying pepper spray for your safety. The problem with pepper spray is that you have to let the person get withing a few feet of you and if the wind should suddenly change you could end up spraying yourself. Years ago a State Trooper friend of mine told me a better thing to have with you that I have shared with many of my female friends and family members. As a matter of fact, three of those people ended up using this for their own defense in a situation and they were glad that they took my advise. Buy a can of Hornet/Wasp spray. They come in different sizes and I am sure you can find one to carry in your purse or even in your hand if outside walking. The beauty of this is that it will shoot a steady liquid stream up to 20 feet away, and all you have to do is aim for their eyes or face. Not only will it burn them like hell but it will also temporarily blind them, giving you time to get to safety. And it will also give the police a better chance to catch them because they are not going to be able to flee anywhere very fast, let alone jump into a car to drive away, because it will have a blinding effect on them for a good 15-20 minutes. Believe me, it is safer for you than any pepper spray. Just make sure that you don't just spray somebody because you don't like the way they look.

  • Anne urbanophile, WP/Bucktown

Tom, I'm glad you posted this because the activities of a peeping Tom are inherently local. If there's one roaming around Bucktown, it affects all women here.

Our neighbor, who is a very nice person, just informed me that some other people on the block have complained that our patch of grass near the curb (I believe it's called a parkway) has a bunch of brown spots from dog pee. She admitted that she thinks it looks bad, too. Our dog doesn't use the patch, but our tenants upstairs let their dogs use it and people walking their dogs will let them go there. She said that you can get fined by the city for this, which sounds absurd. Is this true? I guess my husband and I are in the minority, I keep a well manicured small front garden but don't really care much about the parkway other than keeping it mowed. We both work a lot and I'd rather focus on my back yard and garden. I guess my question is; how much should I care about what the neighbors say, and can you be fined? And I'd be willing to ask our tenants to go across the street to the park, but how am I supposed to keep other dogs from peeing there when I'm gone most of the day? She keeps people off of hers because she's home most of the day and can see when someone is outside.

Full disclosure: that same neighbor's husband mows our parkway for us. We have never asked him to do it and he just does it because he's a nice guy and he knows we only have a push mower. We have thanked him many times. So I'm not sure if there's a sense of entitlement going on there since they maintain it? We would be happy to mow it ourselves. They have lived here a long time and are very particular.

If we put up a fence, then that makes the grass much harder to mow, so then that would involve pulling up the grass and putting something else there which I don't have the desire to to. Also, I've heard that this patch is technically property of the city and could be torn up if they need to access a water main, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

The dogs are urunating on the sidewalk directly if the front if someone gate. That is gross and rude. agree that dogs will go where they will go but this neighbor pulls her dogs in front of the gate to make them go there and laughs. If she were civil she would pull them away from the front gate. I would never let my dogs do that and I would expect others not to do the same regardless if it is city sidewalk or our property. Something scary is that they both have professional job. They are acting like children.

  • You're totally right Confused, those people are ridiculous. I don't think dogs should go on sidewalks unless that's the only option. That's where everyone walks, no one should have to walk around rivers of pee, especially right in front of their gate.

Chimneas and outdoor fire pits- Any restrictions ?

I've been considering purchasing one for a while and want to be sure they are legal. I believe they have to be enclosed but haven't been able to locate any other info.

  • I called the fire department about that question a while back. Backyard firepits are fine. They didn't know of any restrictions. Use common sense and have water nearby, make sure it's completely out before leaving. I would call 311 to be sure.

  • CICS Bucktown reviewed by a parent

I can't even described how thrilled I am with the education and care my child has received at Bucktown. We were worried initially about the size of our neighborhood school, and so applied to CICS for something smaller. We've commuted quite a distance for my daughter to attend Kindergarten there, and don't regret the decision at all. Her teacher is warm and obviously cares a great deal for the students, yet keeps an amazing control of the classroom at all times. The students respect their teachers and my daughter has gone from 'behind the curve' to reading, advanced math, etc in the course of less than a year. Each student receives personalized homework and classwork based on their level of learning. Everyone at the school knows each child, and the weekly school assemblies demonstrate a commitment to community building that is SO important in young children. We are likely moving, and I'm truly sad that we won't be able to return to this school that has been SUCH a positive introduction to learning for my little girl. I highly encourage parents who are looking for a smaller school environment with personalized learning options, to consider applying to CICS Bucktown.
