Police activity on Rockwell and Bloomingdale

My neighbor just mentioned there were about 15 police cars and a fire truck on Rockwell and Bloomindale last night (Sunday). Anyone know what happened?

  • Curious about this report. Hopefully someone has some intel! I can't seem to find anything reflecting this in a news search (at least yet).

St. Hedwig Church Restoration photo

Took a shot from a good angle showing scaffolding on the restoration of St. Hedwig's west bell tower. That's a lot of scaffolding and it has survived some pretty high winds this season. The new roof looks nice. That scaffolding will all be gone by the end of summer.

Looking for sports to play

Are there any pick-up games that happen regularly? I would like to play sports as opposed to straight jogging as a way to stay active. Soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, softball... I guess basketball if that's all I can find, but don't say I didn't warn you (meaning I'm bad).

Alternatively, a more structured league would be okay as well, depending on the price. I know there is the sports complex off Western by the Target.

Thanks!

  • Michael Bucktown Resident

You can very often find pick-up basketball at Wicker Park. Less frequently, a pick up soccer game at the same park...

Nice work Steve...good quality, would love to have seen more about the history and maybe some random people on the street.

Theft on Dickens and Damen

Just a heads up - My catalytic converter was stolen on 7/17 while parked in front of 2034 Dickens.

  • I had the same stolen at 2400 W. Cortland. Mechanic in the area told me he alone has had 3 cars come in this past week with stolen catalytic converters.

flurry of stolen catalytic converter!

Hiya, Last night my catalytic converter was hacked from the underbelly of our Honda CRV while on the street at Dickens and Leavitt. This morning at Dickens and Hoyne I spotted another victim with the same make and model year car...same metal shavings on the street and same void under the car. Just an FYI to anyone driving 2005ish CRV ! I've read this is common in Chi.

  • @RedVetteJen nice link to cat clamp...thanks. Also today went up the the muffler shop on Western and MacLean...they were finishing up a car that had the same theft, same night up on N. Campbell. That makes three that I know of in one night...Two on Dickens one on Campbell...others? Park it in your garage if you've got one!

  • Mel. B. Hopeless Romantic with a flair for Sci-Fi

I just had my converter stolen from Damen and Dickens on the 17th. What did everyone pay to get theirs replaced? I'm curious to see if I over paid

Any recommendations for a mechanic?

I live near the Western blue line stop and am looking for a reasonably priced, honest mechanic. Any recommendations are much appreciated!

  • Kathleen P Bucktown Lady

We've used Nal's for years but they're so busy. When I called this week they said they couldn't take us until next Wednesday. So I called Bucktown Auto on North and Josh was awesome. Helped so much, was lower priced than expected and the car was fixed that day.

  • Santos at Division and Hoyne. Great work and super honest. We had engine work done somewhere else before we brought it to him because we still were having problems. He turned down $2500 worth of work because he said the other mechanic should have fixed it. Reasonably priced too.

Looking for 1 bedroom, dog friendly apt. for around $1000

I work in Bucktown and am looking for a 1 bedroom, dog friendly apt. I am a responsible pet owner (I keep him clean and pick up his poo) and my big boy is a mutt (mostly lab) and lazy.
I would like to stay at $1000 and need by mid-August. Hopefully an apartment with a nice size modern kitchen with some counter space. (I am a pastry chef and like to work on new desserts at home.) Please let me know if you have anything or know of someone that I can contact.

Thank you.

Found: Bicycle rear axle nut after bungee was cut

I helped a guy cut out a bungee cord that got wrapped around his rear wheel near Cortland and Hermitage on Saturday night. It was pouring rain. I was walking home from the Metra.

We lost the axle nut to reattach the wheel.

I was walking by there yesterday and found the axle nut. I think his name was Sean or Shawn. Big white dude with a goatee?

If anyone knows this guy, let him know. I posted this on Craigslist, too.

Recurring robberies

Hi everyone,
I have lived in my apartment on the 2300 block of West Medill for six years. I had no problems until 5 months ago when we were burglarized (forcible entry) during a 50 minute span when I left my apartment. Yesterday, we were again burglarized (forcible entry) during an hour and 20 minute span while at Holstein Fieldhouse for my son's first birthday party. This was incredibly upsetting as they stole my wedding rings and car (the keys were inside the apartment). In both instances they took our laptop and miscellaneous items as well. The cops seemed to think it was the work of the same people both times. I agree as the crimes were extremely similar. I wanted to know if anyone had any information about the break-in (took place Sat. July 12th between 1 and 3 pm) and also wondered if anyone has had a similar experience with repeated break-ins. Clearly, someone who lives close to me is keeping close tabs on our apartment as it is a garden unit and easier to break into than other places. The cops did not necessarily agree with my thoughts on that though. Thanks!

  • alpo, that's someone right around you, who can see or hear you come and go. maybe you can figure how to put a small camera lens at the entry site and have it go to your computer so you can identify the intruder and/or their direction coming to your place. surveillance has become affordable.

  • alpo bucktown resident

I am really really sad about my rings, but yes they are just things. They did mean more to me than anything I own (I wasn't wearing them because I"m having an allergic reaction). But I am relieved I didn't walk in on them either time as I was gone...

I am really really sad about my rings, but yes they are just things. They did mean more to me than anything I own (I wasn't wearing them because I"m having an allergic reaction). But I am relieved I didn't walk in on them either time as I was gone for such a short span of time and I have a young son. And yeah, these crimes started right after my neighbors moved in and they do have some unusual activity going on going on (dropped off packages really late, really hard to figure out who lives there as I always see someone new going in or coming out). Thanks for the advice -- garden units are definitely not in my future! Hoping for a single family home that I can equip with surveillance and alarm, maybe a dog too.
