Why is someone who lives in one ward allowed to run in another ward? I think I should ask another congressman like Quigly to run against Gutierrez, maybe he could tie him up on some absurd run in a different congressional district. he doesn't live there, has no intentions of living there, but run anyway. And why would any voter vote for someone who never cared about another ward or district. Doody should run for 1st Ward where she lives if she is so interested in changing a ward. Sounds like a Rahm Emanuel new machine strategy to run someone who doesn't live in a ward just to waste time. She should be embarrassed. Maybe that promised job after the election is true. happens all the time in Crook county politics but it needs to stop.

Possible attack?

Last night/early Tuesday morning, around 3:30-4:00, my roommate and I both woke up to screams. They were definitely made by a women, but it was difficult to make out any words; it definitely didn't sound like they were joking around. We looked out our windows but saw nothing and they stopped shortly after. We live very close to the new Whirly Ball on Webster Ave. Did anyone else hear these or know what happened?

Cat sitter needed

We are in need of a cat sitter for 12/25-12/27 at Damen & Armitage. I saw the previous post but she is booked already so if anyone has a recommendation, please let me know.

  • We have used Home Alone Pet Service for 7 years and Erin is the best. Dependable, great care and she checks the house and brings in our mail

  • I used to use Sharon and she is amazing. I used her for 7 years! Until my cats passed away. I trust her and she was amazing with my very mean kitty - Sharon - I think deep down Addy loved you. :)

New Juice Bar in Bucktown! 24 Karrots

Please go visit the 24 Karrots Juice Bar on Armitage just west of Damen. The place is clean and bright, the people are friendly and welcoming and the menu and juices are delicious. Let's support a family owned business and keep the area from looking so empty. I have lived in the area for many years and we need more places like this around. Moms and dads they make homemade ORGANIC baby food too!! I am so glad they are a couple blocks from my house :-)

  • Joselito I write things and people pay me for it.

I'll have to check it out. I miss the ridiculously awesome juice bar that was on Armitage nearby a few years ago that was doing well but I guess expanded faster than they could sustain (can't remember its name at the moment).

It's weird that that stretch of Armitage is somewhat anemic to businesses.

  • "Doc's Juice and Smoothie's" wasn't it?

  • Joselito I write things and people pay me for it.

That was the one. Started in the current Bento Box space then moved to the cursed southeast corner of Armitage / Leavitt. That place was *really* good – I'm still sad they closed. Hopefully this new place will be a worthy replacement.

Enormous building being built on Elston

Does anyone know what the enormous building just northwest of damen/fullerton on Elston is going to be?

  • Whirly Ball is on Webster at Lister.

  • The new Whirly Ball complex just opened on Webster between Elston and Damen, just east of the highway. The old one is to be torn down when they divert Elston to break up the tricorner of doom (Fullerton-Damen-Elston)

  • CICS Bucktown reviewed

I recently went to pick up my nephew. upon arriving at the office, a secretary noticed that I came in but continued chatting until I called her attention. She gave a look and gave me a fee sheet. Her demeanor was unproffesional and petty. Everytime I asked questions she smirked as though I said something stupid. I asked why it took so long to contact someone. She claimed that they called different numbers many times, with an attitude that showed me i was inconveniencing her. I asked to talk to the principal. someone else there addressed me and when I asked if she was the principal they started laughing.I was so surprised by the behavior that i took it upon myself to talk to the principal. talking to the pricipal i was extremely disapointed and heartbroken when she apologized for me feeling disrespected but she felt the secretery wasn't disrespectful. she told me that she knows for a fact that her staff calls all appropiate people. I told her that the mother was only called once and the father was never called. She kept saying that she knows they do because its their job. I'm floored and felt like I wasted my breath.

Is Silver Cloud Closed for Good?

There has been a sign on the door (and paper over the windows) saying closed for renovations for 4 months now. No one has been coming or going out of there. I think that the restaurant might be closed for good. Why the pretense of it opening soon, as indicated on the sign on the door? Does anyone know what is going on?

  • Helen R Portage Park resident since 1983

It has expired, but was still worth what I paid for it. I'll check for the credit. I know they're good about doing that, I just didn't know they were closed.

  • How sad. We started going when they first opened almost, could it possibly be,18 years now. Boy, I'm getting old. Loved the bloody Mary w/the roasted jalapeno stuffed w/the blue cheese (wonder why they stopped that, went great with the grilled shrimp).

Thank you :)

  • I would be interested as well. Also would be good to know if they can buy tiles from Virginia Tile at a good discount.

  • Tigele tile. Did a fantastic job. Bought the tile separately, but they provided grout.

Friendly reminder - drive carefully!

Hey neighbors. Now that it is dark around rush hour, be extra careful as you roll through those stop signs! As it was dark and rainy this week and we are all wearing our dark coats, twice I was almost hit by cars that did not slow down or stop. At Hoyne and W McLean - cars just roll through this stop sign and don't see those of us walking home.

Be careful out there!

  • G

I don't know how many times I've seen bikers with no reflective clothing or reflectors on their bikes.

  • How about a block west on Leavitt? Drivers don't seem to notice what's around them when they hit the gas to try to get the green light at Armitage. I've seen cars going well over 30 and blow two stop signs in front of an elementary school.

Has anyone ever tried to get a speed bump here? There are speed bumps west of Holstein Park close to Western, I'm sure those resulted from similar conditions.

    Tess,
I will first off reveal that I am an architect and I am not part of design-build firm.

A design-build firm can be a great experience with great outcomes, but if you are looking at using a design-build, please be aware of some of issues that this business arrangement sets forth. As the client you are going to be the only agent with your interest in mind overseeing the work unless you hire a separate consultant such as a third party architect or construction manager. The design-build firm inherently has a conflict of interest in that if an issue arises they have a number of ways to resolve it that my or may not have your interest in mind, but be assured they will always have their interest in mind. A good credible design-build firm will do good quality work, stay reasonably within your budget, and involve you in the process, but a bad one will just keep finding ways to make more corrections that were never designed or resolved up front and to make more profit.

I believe planning and oversight is beneficial. The typical long used approach of architect & GC as separate entities provides these and contrary to popular belief, the client does not have to bid the project. A project designed by an architect can be built by a contractor of the client's choice. This contractor can be vetted by you, can be a consultant during design, and can have a great relationship with you and your architect.

If you do go with the design-build firm, please vet them. Ask for proof of insurance (this is a big one, insurance for design-build can be expensive and difficult to obtain), have a lawyer review the contracts, and stay involved or hire someone that will for you.

If you want to go with an architect and find a GC, feel free to contact me through my business, Hydrant Studio Architects, Designers, & Home Inspection located in Old Town at (312)945-6208. We will meet for a free consultation meeting with no obligation.

Yesterday at 3:00 PM, Ward 2 Candidate, Stacey Pfignsten, was notified that only she, out of the six candidates running for 2nd Ward Alderman, is being contested. Having entered the race at the last minute and gathered only 1032 signatures, the lowest of any candidate running in the Ward, why are 800 signatures being contested? We will soon find out as the media, no doubt, will have a field day with this one.

I know this is the Chicago way. If you look across the entire city it is being done all over the place. http://app.chicagoelections.com/documents/general/M2015-CandidateFiling-2014-11-17-1415.pdf.If this is happening now, just imagine the mess in February.

If you signed a petition to get Stacey on the ballot, there is only three short days before your signature can be validated before the Board of Elections hearing next week. You can contact her office https://www.staceyfor2ndward.com to find out how to validate your signature.

This is not about one candidate but all candidates.

What the city has done to us voters in the new Ward 2 is disgusting. We are paying the price because the former Ward 2 Alderman, was not well liked at City Hall. The new 2nd Ward cuts through portions of the lakefront, covers parts of the Gold Coast, Old Town, Lincoln Park, Ukrainian Village, Wicker Park and Bucktown, specifically on North Avenue from the Milwaukee, Damen and North avenues intersection west to Leavitt Street.

http://media.apps.chicagotribune.com/ward-redistricting-2012/index.html - 41.910549400000015,-87.67922179999994,13,32,2,41.9105494,-87.6792218

Once voters realize that they now reside in the most geographically challenged Ward in the city, it will be a wake up call in February and beyond. There is no rabbit to be pulled out of a hat here, only rats. This one is on us.

Thanks for listening.

Cat sitter accepting clients in Bucktown

Hi - I'm currently a cat sitter for a very popular pet sitting service (5 stars on Yelp). I have had cats my entire life. I know them and understand their behavior very well.
I have decided to accept pet sitting clients because I am the least senior cat sitter at the service. Thus, I am being passed over for jobs. I have not had a complaint about my service yet, only compliments. I personally have 4 cats, ages 14, 12 and 2. So, I have hands-on experience with a wide range of ages and personalities.
Please contact me for rates, I will beat my service's rates.
