Concrete / Construction Damage

Does anyone know of the construction company that is re-doing street corners near Damen & Armitage? I live close to the corner, and the work being done has damaged the sidewalk concrete near our front gate. It now looks like a pile of rubble, all crumbled. I'd like to contact this company to repair the damage. Any information is appreciated!

  • Artist girl Artist and Muscian

It may be the city itself that is re-doing the street corners. It would either be through the City Department Of Transportation, or Streets and Sanitation. They are notorious for making messes and not fixing them, so good luck.

  • Anne WP/Bucktown borderland

Don't bother with the contractor, go straight to Streets and San and find out who's responsible for the project. That's how we finally got reimbursed for damage done by The city's Green Alleys contractor.

What's up with the traffic at the Webster on ramp?

Hi Everyblockers - anyone know why this entrance to 90/94 has become crowded over the past few weeks? Usually there were no other cars or just a few at 7:30 am when I am there. Now there are several and often I have to sit through three cycles of the light. Thanks for any 411!

Wicker/Bucktown community garage sale?

Is there any kind of community event/sale for residents of Wicker Park and Bucktown to sell their stuff? Like a very large garage sale? I would like to get rid of something things but I don't want to just set up a table outside my building.

Good Tailor in the Area

I'm looking for a good tailor in the area to do some revisions to a dress. I'm fine with going to a dry cleaner or an individual who works out of their home. Anyone have any recommendations?

  • AMG

Did you try searching for tailor or seamstress in the search box (upper right)? This question has been asked a lot.

    Good luck!

  • Nope, didn't try that. Thanks!

  • I always go to Fame cleaners on Division. They do a great job.

PRO in old Pinch Spice Market space

Hi - I saw a sign for PRO coming soon in the window of the old Pinch Spice Market space on Milwaukee at Western (1913 N. Milwaukee). Does anyone know who/what they are? I couldn't find anything online. I'm just curious.

  • Yes, I'm wondering the same thing. Also, I noticed that there's a lot sectioned off at the corner of Western and Milwaukee for sale...

  • Hoping DNA Info sees this. She's usually in the know.

  • PRO is Pro Computers Chicago. They do computer and smartphone service and repair. They are moving from North Avenue near 5411 empanadas. Nice People.

What is this plant?

Does anyone know what kind of plant this is? It looks like it would be painful to the touch but it's not. I'm curious.

  • Milkweed. That's a pod that opens up and had big silky "parachute" with a seed at the end. They pop open at the end of fall when the pod dries out and turns brown. It gets its name for the milky substance in the stem when you break it open. It's not poisonous or spiky. We used to play with them as kids when the pods broke open.

  • Thanks RaleighsMa. I didn't know that, but I've heard milkweed is needed for the butterflies, especially migrating Monarch's. So I won't pull any out if I see it.

  • Yes! Please leave it for the monarchs! If you'd like any information, go to monarchwatch.org.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Bucktown

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Bucktown think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:
http://w11.zetaboards.com/InsideNextdoor/topic/10057749/2/#new

For those who are not familiar with ND, but curious, here's an invite link:

  • NRS

Just out of curiosity- are you promoting next-door.com? I notice that you have posted on a ton of EB neighborhood boards.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

No, just curious what people think of the two. Hyperlocal social networks show a lot of promise for community building but i question how effective their differing approaches are.

  • I looked at NextDoor awhile ago and they wanted too much personal information. You can have my email address but you don't get to have my real address or anything else. Here's a funny line from your second link:

LOL. To ensure my privacy you need me to reveal and verify where I live? Why? The only thing Everyblock asks of you to sign up is a valid email address. Fine. That's all any site really needs to know about you.
