"Fresh Market" on Western, formerly known as Danny's

Does anyone know anything about the "Fresh Market" being built on Western? It's at about Western and Shakespeare, across from a small strip mall. It seems to have been in the works for a while, not quite sure if they're making too much progress. I live nearby but wanted to see if anyone had the inside scoop.

Thanks!

  • Joselito I write things and people pay me for it.

Paul - when you open, make a post on Everyblock about it. There are tons of people in the area that would really like to check out a grocery store that's within really close walking distance.

  • Joselito,
I will absolutely post it on the site. Thanks for the feedback. I am usually there in the mornings during the week and feel free to stop by and have a look. Also please check out our facebook page. www.facebook.com/freshmarketplaceIL

Strike3 -- Once upon a time, Leavitt was a commercial corridor, and many of the properties have survived through creative adaptive re-use: The next block north from this property block had a furniture maker and showroom (now a single family home), there were corner taverns every few blocks (for instance, while now a single family, the building on nw corner of Hoyne / Leavitt was Pinky's until the early or mid 90's) and there was a funeral home at Leavitt/Lyndale (now a multi-unit apartment building). But, several have been lost, including two this summer -- this property and 2328 N. Leavitt, which was a corner tavern, then southwest style single family. Development and investment are good things, but balance and adaptive re-use are also welcome.

I wish I didn't look at the link of what was there. I'm not around there much anymore and wouldn't have known. I remember stumbling by and staring at that place after good nights at the charleston in the late 80's/90's. That particular section around there had/ has such a real feel. Always dreamed of owning around there. I feel so helpless with this unstoppable determination to erase these neighborhoods and replace with depressing stuff. Gone are the folks who move in for what it is and keep it going. I by the way live too close to the lovely development at leavitt/haddon. Still holding my breath that they stick some kind of decorative brick on those things. At least.

Hoyne and Armitage attack

Date: 08/19/2014
ChicagoPoliceBadge
A man, 45, was walking along the 2000 block of W. Hoyne Ave., near Armitage Ave., in Bucktown, when he was attacked at 10:45 p.m. Mon., Aug. 18.

The offenders were a group of four to five black 16 to 18 year-olds, according to Officer Janel Sedevic in News Affairs, Chicago Police Department. He was punched in the face and had his cell phone stolen.

Unable to call the police from the scene, he went elsewhere to call but refused medical attention, despite his bruises.

Area North Detectives are investigating.

Hayek: I agree, a little gang of these punks is going to go after a CCW carrier one of these times and it will be bad.

Then all the parents will cry and say their kids are quiet, good kids who have dreams of being president and they were a victim of a "white neighborhood" and a victim of blah, blah, blah and the person who was attacked will be branded an over aggressive racist if they are white/Latino.

Fact is, these kids have zero respect for anyone, including themself or each other. They are pretty much equalivent to rabid stray dogs. Most will end up in prison or dead from violence or drugs.... Not productive, self reliant, respectful citizens.

Take a look at Michael Brown in STL. I'm not saying the cop didn't potentially over react or do something criminal since I don't know.... But I am saying, if Michael Brown would have had any respect for anyone - cops, authority, the law - he'd still be alive.

What's the solution????? Do kids need an ethics curriculum rammed down their throat from 1-12th grade?

  • I'm wondering if we can make our neighborhood unattractive. Do not ever walk with headphones or your phone out. When asked the time, say you don't know. Walk en masse whenever possible. If you have a dog, gather your neighbors when you go dog walking and walk as a large group. If there are less people walking alone with an obvious phone to steal...maybe they'll give up ? Just an idea to throw out there.

Over Night Blue Line Construction

Our bedroom face the Western Blue Line stop. We are used to sleeping through the standard train sounds, but last night, they began night construction and we were awake for the entire thing. Although loud, the actual machinery is tolerable. What kept us up was the intermittent sound of boards or something similar being thrown from the el into large metal dumpsters on the ground. Every time I dozed off for a second, BOOM! Anyone know how long this is supposed to last? Should they be throwing materials from the tracks? I am exhausted.

  • Can you go on the website and get more information about construction?

Sadly, city services has different 'rules' as I learned from 606. But file a complaint with the city anyway...everyone needs to sleep...

Demolition and construction Fullerton next to Tennis club for new intersection bypass?

There was demolition and now some kind of construction going on West of the Tennis Club on Fullerton, near the intersection of Damen, Elston, and Fullerton. Does anyone know - is that for the new intersection bypass road construction?

    Artist Girl,
From the plans they showed us the other night the new road will come in across the currently vacant Vienna Beef parcel (where those trucks are parked) and will require the relocation of utilities and front end stuff at the Midtown facility on that side of the street. As I understand it they will carve out some of the front of that building for the road but the structure will essentially be where it is now with some entrance and utility modifications. I will try to dig up the plans that they showed us and post them here if I can find them.

    Topher,
It is no longer a flyover situation and now they are dividing the Elston, Damen and Fullerton intersections into 3 separated and distinct intersections.... hard to describe and if I can find the drawings they showed us the other night I will put them up!!
    Thx.
    Gail

  • Ok if you go to Alderman Waguespack's website you will find stuff there under infrastructure projects. Here is the presentation and at about page 19 you will see the new layout of the intersections.... http://ward32.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/041008.pdf
His general site is http://ward32.org/ if you want to poke around more - there are other docs related to this project.

EIGHT PALMER SQUARE HOMES TO BE FEATURED ON
2014 HOUSE & GARDEN WALK SEPTEMBER 13

Popular Late Summer Showcase Hosted by Logan Square Preservation to Include Gardens and Church

CHICAGO – Elegant restored or preserved residences on or surrounding Palmer Square, once home to bicycle icon Ignaz Schwinn, will be open for public view September 13 during the Logan Square Preservation 2014 House & Garden Walk.

Visitors enjoy relaxed interior tours of stately turn-of-the-century homes led by trained docents who provide insight on history and architectural significance.

The event also includes access to four striking area gardens and the Old Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church, the first religious institution of its kind in Chicago.

Most homes and gardens on the walk are located on Palmer Square, a pocket neighborhood of Logan Square, one of Chicago’s most historic and vibrant communities. The seven-acre Square recently was redeveloped by the City to include a children's play space, walking trails, soft surface jogging trail, open lawn areas, lighting, seating, and landscaping.

Visitors are highly encouraged to take in the Walk at a leisurely pace and also explore the surrounding neighborhood, now home to many award-winning, ethnic and eclectic restaurants.

The House and Garden Walk runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advance tickets are now on sale for $25; day of event tickets are $30. Those interested can purchase tickets on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. at the Logan Square Comfort Station, 2579 N. Milwaukee Av., or by visiting www.logansquarepreservation.org

Request further information from logansquarehousewalk@gmail.com.

This year marks the return of this popular late summer event hosted by Logan Square Preservation, a long-standing non-profit community organization with a rich history of preserving the homes and unique character of the neighborhood and its Boulevard network.

First Time Home Buyer.....

I have decided to start on this journey of buying my first house. I am skeptical of hiring a real state agent, but I do not it does not mean I wouldnt consider it. Does any one have any suggestions, recommendations or tips?

Thanks!

Whether or not you would want to work with me to find your perfect home, I am happy to answer any other questions you may have or help in anyway I can. My number is 773-603-6711

  • Ariana,
Yes, a thorough inspection is essential. The City requires that certain declarations be made by the seller regarding conditions. Do find your own inspector. Just because the Realtors split the fee does not mean your agent cannot serve you well. I repeat, no need to hire a buyer's agent.

Stolen Bicycle with Child's Seat

Had a 10 year old Gary Fisher Mountain bike stolen last night from my garage on Charleston. Just a reminder for all to keep their garages secure. I thought ours was locked but when i looked out saw it open around 9pm.

I see men with old pickups driving around the alleys looking for junk all the time. Often the stop and look into my garage when they don't realize I am in there.

  • These garbage picker upper type of cars should be outlawed . All they do is shuffle through our garbage and make a mess. We had a guy take our iron door off our fence.

Rodent Issue Near Milwaukee/Oakley

Last weekend my husband and I were walking on Oakley and there was a dead rat, the size of a small horse, in the middle of the sidewalk. The very next day, at another, separate location there laid a second expired rodent. I called 311 to have the city come to the neighborhood, however I'm not sure what (if anything, really) they do to manage the issue. Is calling the city effective? Does the city track their success as far as this issue is concerned?

  • A rat that size lived a long and prosperous life around that area. Rat colonies become displaced with new construction and I'm sure the current work on that 666 trail has forced some rat migration. Sometimes it's difficult for the older ones to move. I wouldn't worry too much about seeing dead old ones. If you see a bunch of young ones zipping about then you need to make sure your alley is clean of all food stuff.

  • thedom Chicagoan

Why so negative, nutria are a delicacy in some places and Chicago has it's own variety...http://www.nutria.com/site14.php

"Chicago's Bureau of Rodent Control investigates every reported rat sighting. Alley conditions are investigated and damaged carts are replaced. Rodenticide is placed in rat burrows to eradicate the nest."

With a Service Level Agreement of: "Most requests for Rodent Baiting are addressed in 21 days or less."
