looking for kittens

I am looking to adopt two kittens for our house, does anyone know of any that are ready to go to a new home?

  • Oh. :-) Sorry, didn't see the date until now and didn't realize this post was 2 weeks old. So glad you found a couple of sweet kitties to make your own. :-)

Ariel, if the cats happen to be microchipped, don't forget to update the contact information. Many chipped cats end up at Chicago Animal Care and Control. The chips were either never registered or else the contact info is out of date.

Rahm's 1st jumbo LED billboard going up right now

Rahm's 1st jumbo LED billboard going up in Bucktown today.
This was billed as an income-generator for Chicago but turns out its not.

If you're not happy about it- remind him by voting him out on Feb 24th.
In the meantime, if you live by one of these, its time to order room-darkening curtains!

  • There's a similar sign on eastbound 290 and it's BRIGHT - like blinding bright. I often wonder how no accidents have been caused by drivers whose vision was temporarily impaired because of this sign.

I am not looking forward to these signs going up in the neighborhood. I live near Burr Elementary so I'll be smack dab between 2 of these signs.

  • Agree with No yolk. Rahm has no problem putting extremely bright signs in the neighborhoods, but thinks they don't belong downtown because of light pollution. Why is it light pollution downtown, but not up here? There are plenty of nice skyline views up here that are now blocked by ugly signs.

Cars speeding down Hermitage to/from Kennedy

It finally happened. Last Thursday, a car heading south on Hermitage from Armitage/Kennedy hit a car that was either parallel parking or pulling out of a spot at about 1950 N. Hermitage.

I've only lived in the neighborhood a few months, but cars regularly treat this block of Hermitage like a drag strip. It's pretty alarming. The guys from Orloff auto shop drive cars around the block like it's F1 track. It's annoying.

  • Get together with your neighbors and request speed bumps from the alderman.

But posting on EveryBlock is so much easier.

I feel badly for pedestrians who have to cross that intersection to get to the Clybourn Metra station. I would guess cars probably zoom extra fast northbound blowing that light frequently. Perhaps a red light camera would put a damper on this.

Over two years ago I watched as my father who is virtually blind try and cross Leavitt at a three way stop with a line of traffic waiting at each stop sign. He held up his hands as he entered the crosswalk and cars simply swerved around him like he was a mere obstacle on a driving course. When cars get lined up there they think since they already stopped once while in line they don't have to stop again when they get to the intersection and they have little patience for pedestrians.

After seeing this I decided to do a random sample study and spent a bunch of hours taking videos of a lot of stop signed intersections here in Bucktown. My conclusion: More than half of Bucktown drivers have no respect for stop signs which means more than half the people reading this treat stop signs as stop only if there's something to stop for like another car not stop because that's part of rules of the road you were supposed to have learned when you got your drivers license. I suspected non compliance was going to be high but not that high.

You could get a camera and tripod and try and capture the situation at Hermitage and Armitage but it takes time. Each of my sessions took 1/2 hour sitting there collecting data. I only put two videos up on youtube because they all show the same compliance rate. Here's one I liked because Holstein Park is nicely lit in the background.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hK-FOqC29E

I was thinking of doing another set, perhaps shooting cars that don't stop for pedestrians at crosswalks like at the Map Room but it takes a lot of effort and in the end, no one cares and nothing can be done to stop reckless driving until we all get self driving cars that are programmed to follow the rules.

"The laws don't apply to us" the police officer said.

Story of the day: I was biking in the rain down Division passing Wood, in the Wicker Park neighborhood headed home. The roads are wet so it's very dangerous out for bikers... I had seen a police car texting while driving. The police officers were probably from 13th District or 14th District. I called them out on texting and driving, informing them of the dangers it can potentially cause for bikers and other motorist. They pull up next to me...

They pull up next to me lower the window and the female officer in the passenger seat told me to "Mind my f*cking business" I replied "He's texting and driving" The male officer driving swerving on the street and talking to me while driving suggested that "I was hating" I replied with, "I'm not hating, it's dangerous out here" He replied "THE LAWS DON'T APPLY TO US" at that moment I looked into the car and responded "We're all humans regardless of uniform" The female officer kept yelling but I'm not going to waste my time and give the cops a reason to lock up another Latino in Chicago.... "The laws don't apply to us" the police officer's words are now forever tainted into my brain.

  • Big Al WP Big Al, Your Neighborhood Pal

OK everybody, let's just chill. I have two rules of driving and now it can be expanded to include bikes. My first rule of driving is "When you drive (or ride), act like a doctor and take your "patients" with you." The other one I included in my prior post. "Don't explode, share the road." Drivers, please check your mirrors when getting out of your vehicle, so you don't "door" a biker. Everybody be safe out there.

  • Good advice, Al. Now, would it be equally prudent (and safe) for all bikers to understand they are subject to all rules of the road drivers are, including stoplights and stop signs? 3...2...1...awaiting the first bicyclist to whine that they are not. They are. I drive, I bike, I observe the traffic laws and shouldn't have to have my head on a swivel because another party - car or bike - doesn't drive or ride defensively.

Who needs a nanny in bucktown?

I have an amazing nanny whom we've had for 3 years. We got so fortunate to win the lottery and have her accepted at Drummond Montessori pre-k this year. I want to be able to keep this lovely woman who has become our family, employed full time. We would really like to pair up with a family who needs someone Monday-Friday from approx 9-3. My daughter will need picked up at school everyday at 3:30p.m. If you live in bucktown and have been looking for childcare that isn't your traditional 9-5, please contact me. I want to be able to give this wonderful gift of a woman to another family.
Thank you!
