Nick's Pit Stop in Bucktown Abruptly Shutters, May Relocate Nearby Soon

Nick's Pit Stop opened in 1997 at 2011 N. Damen Ave. and offers chicken as well as sides like baked beans and chili with homemade brownies for dessert.

Neighbors said they heard Nick's is moving to 2023 N. Damen Ave., formerly home to Middle Eastern restaurant Babylon, but those rumors could not be confirmed.

Julie Horowitz Jackson, owner of Virtu retail shop at 2035 N. Damen, said she was "thrilled Nick's Pit Stop is staying in the neighborhood" as her husband and son "live off" of their chicken and eat there every week.

In addition to the Bucktown location, Nick's Pit Stop has a second location, Nick's Pit Stop #2 at 3652 W. Lawrence Ave. in Albany Park.

Take control of your safety

Attention ladies!

Every single day we read about examples of violence in our neighborhoods. It's time to take control of your safety and well-being.

Every single day we read about examples of violence in our neighborhoods. It's time to take control of your safety and well-being.

When I first moved to Chicago, I promised myself to take a self-defense course. Not just any course, but one that made me feel as if I could REALLY defend myself.

IMPACT Chicago teaches self-defense for women. The most interesting part of this is that women are strong in their lower body. That is the focus of this training. The other piece is that you are training when in a frightened state - helps with muscle memory and reaction times.

This is just a personal reference and I'm sure that people will post negative comments. I'm proud that I took control of my safety and will never feel like a victim while walking around our neighborhoods.

If you want more information, see their website. http://www.impactchicago.org/

They have upcoming classes and can even offer a payment plan to help with the cost.

This program changed my life - I hope others see the benefit as well.

St. Hedwig Church Restoration photo

Took a shot from a good angle showing scaffolding on the restoration of St. Hedwig's west bell tower. That's a lot of scaffolding and it has survived some pretty high winds this season. The new roof looks nice. That scaffolding will all be gone by the end of summer.

  • I originally posted this (7/21) because I have a fetish for a well engineered set of scaffolding and we probably won't see scaffolding around these bell towers for another 50 - 100 years so it's like taking a picture of a comet. The scaffolding is down and the roof is done. Here's a what the completed roof looks like from the same angle but in sunset light.

Bike theft

On august 31 between 10pm and midnight somebody walked back into my friends yard around north ave and wood st and walked out with my bike that should have been locked up but wasn't. It was not visible from the street or alley so someone is definitely intentionally walking through backyards to find things to steal. I doubt it will surface but it is a blue schwinn with heavily padded high seat, black water bottle holder, rear rack with an orange and black lock, hand grips coming apart, kickstand.

  • Besides Craigslist and pawn shops, does anybody know other websites or places to look?

  • Swap-O-Rama on S Ashland sees a large number of stolen bikes

looking for kittens

I am looking to adopt two kittens for our house, does anyone know of any that are ready to go to a new home?

  • Hi Ariel. My wife and I are actually trying to find a home for our two cats. They've been together for about 6 years and we are trying to keep them together if at all possible. They are fantastic cats love playing with each other and sitting on the deck with us. They are free to a good family and someone that will enjoy them as much as we have over the years. Let me know if you would like to come over and meet them!

  • Hi there, I also have 2 cats that we've had for 5yrs. I love them a lot but we have a newborn and I can't keep the shedding under control. The boy is an adorable long hair, black cat. He's super lovable and likes to cuddle. The girl is a black/white short hair. She's very sweet too.
Let me know if you're interested

Amazing Nanny in Bucktown

Do any of you bucktown families need a nanny? I have had the most amazing nanny for 3 years, & now my 3.5 year old is starting school. In a perfect world, we would love to find her another family to nanny for from 9-3, Monday-Friday, so that we can have her from 3:30-5:30, but I know that might not be ideal. My #1 priority is to find her the perfect fit for both her and the new family. If you are interested in hearing more about this lovely, amazing woman who has become like family to us, please contact me here and I will send you my contact info. Thank you!

  • Hi Sarah, My husband and I may be interested in the 9-3 option as we're expecting our first any day now and are interested in considering a nanny for our newborn when I return to work in December. Please send me your contact info!

  • Hi Sarah,
I am interested in a M-F, 12:30-5:45 option for my 3 yr old son. He attends morning preschool in West Bucktown. I would be open to nannysharing from 3:30-5:30 if we could work out logistics. Please send me your contact info if this is something that you or your nanny is interested in doing.

  • Hi Ladies,

Please fee free to contact me at 773.875.3323 to talk more about the nanny. Thanks!

Bucktown Arts Fest Rant

When you charge $6-$8 for a cup of beer that's called gouging the tourists. I remember when the Bucktown Arts fest had neighborly pricing like $2/beer to encourage neighbors to come out and socialize this last weekend of summer. This was back when it was rumored Wendy would not allow a band to play at this fest unless they played at her bar. Even food vendors were by my estimate $2 higher on similar items than last year and there...

Even food vendors were by my estimate $2 higher on similar items than last year and there were less of them this year which means there might be a lot of other fees being imposed keeping them out.
IMHO the Arts fest has ceased being something for the neighborhood and more for tourists who need some place to go other than Navy Pier. Is there any way of getting our old Arts fest back or has money interests totally taken over?

That's the end of my rant for now. :-)

  • Wow, that is great - I stand corrected in my comments which compared the the Bucktown Art Fest to some of the other neighborhood festivals. Thank you for the informative response. Much appreciated.

  • Steve J -A Chicago original since 1968-

Kudos to the volunteers of the BAF for another fun event this year !
