Candidates for 39th Ward Alderman

I've been studying the 39th Ward candidates for alderman, and while I am still undecided since anything can happen between now and the election, I have been impressed by Robert Murphy. He seems to have a handle on the issues of the Ward and appears very passionate. I am still open to hearing more from Joe Laiacona and Mary Hunter.

If anyone has any thoughts on any of the candidates, I would like to hear any views. You can also private message me if you like.

One point of clarification..Robert Murphy is part of the original leadership of FAiR. Seven community leaders met at the Edgebrook Library in March 2013 to take a look at what was going on at O'Hare. After several meetings, conversations and many emails, in May 2013 FAiR was formed and Robert was/is a founding leader. His initial efforts were focused on the development of the FAiR Policy Statement, which stands to this day. Robert did a great job in working with our early volunteers to put together a sound policy to solve the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution that suddenly appeared over our heads on October 17, 2013.

I agree w/ @Patrick Flynn that everybody interested in the campaign should do everything they can to find out personally about the candidates and issues. Unlike Mr. Flynn, I believe that citizens of the 39th Ward shouldn't just vote for someone because the person's always been there, but actually ask why that person sold the parking meters for 10 cents on the dollar, when that money could have paid for almost half of the pension deficit that is going to cause taxes to go up immediately after the election, and they shouldn't be told that no new local businesses can be brought to the ward, despite the fact that the can see those businesses starting up in neighboring wards a couple of miles away.

The last chance to see all three candidates together is coming up at 7pm on February 4th at the 17th District Police Station on Pulaski. This forum is co-hosted by North Mayfair Improvement Association, Albany Park Neighbors, Hollywood North Park Community Association and Old Irving Park Association.

I urge you to see for yourself and make up your own mind. Don't take "No" for an answer.

Would you like to cut about 500 calories from your daily diet without even realizing it? All you have to do is turn the following tips into habits, and you'll drop one pound per week, 26 pounds in six months, or 52 pounds by next year!

Stick to the strategy from Prevention magazine, published by Rodale of Emmaus, and watch the scale drop to a new low.

SNACK IN AFTERNOON, NOT MORNING

1 If you're divvying up your total daily calories among five or six smaller meals to control hunger and lose weight, you may be able to get by with one less snack and slim down even more. According to one study, a mid-morning snack is less effective for weight loss than a mid-afternoon one.

IGNORE THE WORDS 'LOW FAT'

2 It may sound counterintuitive but a Cornell study found people eat up to 50 percent more when a product is labeled low-fat. This is known as the "halo effect," because it makes the product appear healthful, prompts us to feel virtuous and — you guessed it — we end up eating more. Here's the rule: Eat the same amount of the "skinny" version as you normally would the "fat" version and you'll cut calories.

EXERCISE IN THE MORNING

3 Women who work out in the morning reduce their appetite and boost their total physical activity throughout the day, according to researchers. But here's the fine-print: The appetite-reducing effect only lasts for a short time, until body temperature returns to normal after exercise. However, since moving in the morning apparently encourages more movement all day, try four or five short bursts of activity (take the stairs, park in the outer reaches of the parking lot, do some crunches …) for best results.

39th Ward Alderman Debate?

Finally there's competition for the job. Anyone know if there's a debate in the works?

  • Robert Murphy local booster, active neighbor

Also, I don't know about Ald. Laurino's scheduling, but the invite for the forum went out to all candidates on Dec 13, so not really last minutes

  • Did anyone participate in Laurino's town hall meeting last night via phone? I learned about it last night after the fact. I didn't see it listed on the ward website and I didn't receive any email notice so I wasn't home to take the call. Did anyone participate? And did anyone receive advance notice?

The sound of it only adds to the power of the oratory.

If interested, I would suggest you read "Letters from Birmingham Jail" too.

So, read, reflect, discuss and then actively work towards our nation's continued need to achieve racial justice.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

I can't find the pictures I took, but several years ago I rode a bicycle between Selma and Montgomery, just to take a slow ride along the route.

The Edmund Pattus bridge hasn't changed, but Rt 80 today is a four-lane mostly divided highway. Back then it was a two-lane highway. There are signs posted where the two camping spots were located. The land is still empty, but they're just vacant land, not campgrounds.

There isn't anything noteworthy in Selma. It's like any other small town. Local restaurants, but McDonalds and Burger Kings too. I didn't see anything noteworthy about the march.

Someplace near Montgomery I got chased off the highway by a state trooper. He told me since it was a federal highway bicycles weren't allowed. I tried to point out to him that this wasn't a restricted highway, there were no sign postings and that bicycles were allowed. He offered to take me into jail and let a judge decide the next day. I declined, even though I knew if MLK has been with me, he wouldn't have given up so easily. I got off the highway (he followed me until I did), camped and the next day returned to the highway several miles down the road. Several other state police passed me but didn't stop.

I got done what I wanted to get done, but Rt. 80 isn't really the most pleasant place to ride a bicycle.

i have a pet peeve before consuming something before you buy it at a retail store , to me it is just wrong. i can see if it were a life or death situation, but these people that just start opening stuff they have not paid for and start eating it or the people that just open up a water and just start drinking it in line. really? maybe it's just how i was brought up.

or those people that open up a package to check it out and just leave it to the side all opened, then either proceed to not buy it or buy another one.

if i were the clerk i would have held onto the ticket until the guy came back to pay for his purchase and if the guy wanted to call the cops for holding onto the ticket, fine, i would tell the cop that he intended to pay for the item with the ticket and since i can't cash out or verify the ticket at this time, i will hold it until payment is made, if he intends not for the ticket to be held in lieu of payment, i would charge the guy with shoplifting the item not paid for.

Available only at Lincoln Park's Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co. (2121 N. Clark St.) this dish is basically what it sounds like: Sicilian bread stuffed with cheese, sauce and classic pizza toppings. You can take the pies home frozen too.

But we can do it too, and do it well. Jimmy's Pizza Cafe, 5159 N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Square, serves up simple cheese slices just as good as any in Manhattan. (Their garlic knots are amazing too.)

Piece Brewery and Pizzeria, 1927 W. North Ave., does New Haven thin crust style impeccably.

And Roots Handmade Pizza, with one location at 1924 W. Chicago Ave. and two more on the way, made us fall in love with the Quad Cities-style that originated on the Illinois-Iowa border.
