The Outside the Loop radio show continues to rapidly grow in popularity having been picked up by WGN after building a large following of listeners. Congrats to Mike and Andy at Outside the Loop for their success.

Thanks for sharing the FAiR story, which is the story of tens of thousands of citizens whose lives have been adversely impacted by the October 2013 changes to the O'Hare runway takeoff and landing patterns and the February 2014 changes to Midway flight patterns. These changes were made without any real community input.
Outside the Loop is doing yeoman's work on getting out information about truly local Chicago stories. Thanks Outside the Loop.

Candidates for 39th Ward Alderman

I've been studying the 39th Ward candidates for alderman, and while I am still undecided since anything can happen between now and the election, I have been impressed by Robert Murphy. He seems to have a handle on the issues of the Ward and appears very passionate. I am still open to hearing more from Joe Laiacona and Mary Hunter.

If you're interested in knowing - Murphy, Laiacona's and Hunter all have Facebook pages, and Murphy and Laiacona have twitter too. I tried to find a FB page or twitter for Alderman Laurino but I don't think she has either.

If anyone has any thoughts on any of the candidates, I would like to hear any views. You can also private message me if you like.

  • Hi Kathleen, Heather is running in the 38th Ward, and this post is about the 39th, so I'm not sure if you meant to comment in the 38th Ward post, or if you just wanted say that you like Heather. Either way, have a great Thanksgiving! :)

ELSTON AVE CTA BUS SERVICE - Let's get it back!

Call your local alderman's office! Request that they attend the meeting being held by the 33rd ward's Transportation Action Committee at Ald. Deb Mell's office January 22, 2015 7:00-8:00p 3649 N. Kedzie Ave. (Addison/Kedzie). Reinstating discontinued bus service on Elston is more important that ever. Let's get our alderman's to put it back on CTA's agenda. Remember in the 1980s when Elston was an industrial corridor? Well, that is no more! We have commercial businesses and residents that can benefit from this bus route, especially the kids during school hours. We have Charter and Magnet schools all over the city. Let's help get our kids to school! Please spread the word and let's make it happen!

  • Well, once again what began as a simple discussion has dissolved into trading insults. If anyone cares to begin a petition to submit to the powers that be at the CTA, please let me know. I will be very happy to sign. Short of that, I'm opting out of this thread.

Why I Support the Sauganash Sounds and You Should Too

Greetings my many neighbors!

I'm asking you to support the Sauganash Sounds with a financial donation to this very important community newspaper. I am again making a donation this year. Donations can be mailed to Sounds Donation Drive, ATTN: Julie Gay, 22 Alice Lane, Lake Barrington, IL 60010.

Supporting the Sounds with a donation is important. As a longtime self-professed "community guy", the Sounds provides localized information on what is going on in a whole bunch of NW neighborhoods. The information is often tailored exactly to a specific community. The newspaper is responsive to the civics in our area and talks about individual neighbors. All of this would already be worth my and your donation.

But what is most important to me as a community guy, is with the Sounds we increase our ability to build community and do democracy. Building community starts with being informed but moves towards getting involved. I read the Sounds seeing that all of the events and activities listed invite you and me to get involved with other citizens. When done right, whether or not successful, along the way community is built. "We are better together" is one of my many sayings.

The Sounds also allows us to do democracy. Democracy belongs to the people, not the political parties, government or even elected officials. Like community, democracy requires citizens who are informed, connected with one another, understand the common challenges they face and determined to solve those challenges. No citizen stands alone so the massing of more citizens around an issue is required to solve challenges. The Sounds provides an open platform for a variety of voices to be heard in the democratic arena whether those are for or against.

Thank you Sounds for information, introducing us to each other, letting us know what's going on, building community and doing democracy. All of this more than merits my donation once again this year. I ask you to do the same.

The Lake Barrington address is that of the daughter-in-law of one of the Sounds’ founders, Nyra Gay. It really does not matter where the contribution is mailed to. Then again, if Bob is so concerned about where payment is received, perhaps he should get involved in the paper and he can establish a lock box account at a nearby location?

My resistance to contributing to the Sounds is mostly due to fact that there is very little news in it. Recipes and baby pictures are of little interest to me. I learn about more crime from EveryBlock than I do the Sounds. Every issue is guaranteed at least one picture of Alderman Laurino or State Rep. D’Amico. We know who they are and don’t need semi-monthly reminders. Report real news, instead of being the mouthpiece for the neighborhood’s political family and the paper may find increased support.

The Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition has been invited once again to be on our region's premiere community news show - Chicago Tonight. FAiR will appear live on Wednesday, December 19 at 7pm on Channel 11 (PBS).

More information about FAiR can be found at www.fairchicago.org. We are also on Facebook and Twitter.

I invite you to join FAiR! We are the leading voice for residents in both the city and suburbs impacted by the October 2013 changes made to the O'Hare runway takeoff and landing patterns. Those changes were made without any real community input.

In addition, FAiR now includes Midway airport. Changes were made there in February 2014. Not surprsingly, these changes were made without any real community input.

We seek a real seat at the airport decision making table in order to find solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution over our communities, again done without any real community input.

Crime Prevention and Personal Defense

Rob Goetz Sr
As far as Crime Prevention Goes, and as "Concealed Carry" is now the Law, how does the Mayfair community regard those persons who have "Legally Qualified and are Licenced to Carry and choose to do so?" Any objective response from Law Enforcement would be appreciated. I would like to start a contiuous thread on this subject, as I personally have no objections to persons who are "properly licensed and qualified," and have no criminal history.

As I said, I welcome some objective views and constructive input from law enforcement.

Dear Cook County Military Families and Merchants:

The Cook County Military and Veterans Discount Program is a public- and private-sector partnership to honor those who serve and have served. It is jointly administered by the Office of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds and the County Department of Veterans Affairs.

Our goal is to create a network of businesses and merchants who offer money-saving discounts and incentives to veterans and active-duty military, as a way of showing our gratitude. Those who wish to take advantage of this program can visit CCRD’s Veterans Service Office at 118 N. Clark, Room 120, and upon proof of service, receive a Discount/ID Card.

We hope this program will be a “win-win” – both a way to help save money for military families and a way to support businesses that support military families.

Below you will find a Registration Form with which to register your business and the discount you would like to offer. Once registered, your company’s name will be added to the Program’s promotional materials. We urge all businesses to sign up and offer military discounts year round, not just around the holidays.

If you would like more information, please call (312) 603-5788 or email Brian.Cross@CookCountyIL.gov.

Thank you to all who serve, and to those who serve them.

Sincerely,

Karen. A. Yarbrough, Recorder of Deeds

An Open Letter to America’s Veterans

At the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), we have one of the most noble and inspiring missions in Government. I accepted this job and joined this mission to better serve you—our Veterans—and improve the delivery of the care and benefits you have earned. It is our privilege to serve you, and I have made clear that as we move forward as a Department, we will judge the success of all our efforts against a single metric—the outcomes we provide for Veterans.

Participatory Budgeting in the 39th ward

I have lived on the same street in the 39th Ward for 29 years, 17 years in one house and 12 years in another, two houses down. We live on an unimproved street a/k/a WPA street. Our block has been on a "list" to get new streets/curbs/new sewers and the alderman's office has continually "lost" our petition or said there never was one or has come up with other excuses saying it's a federal street and needs federal funds. Ald. Laurino threw us a bone this past summer and paved the middle of the street; however, the sides were not paved since we don't have curbs. Because of this, we don't have street cleaners down our block. We have four vacant houses (due to elderly deaths) on our block and lots of trees. Guess whose house gets water up to her first front step when it rains hard? The street is entirely flooded and impassible. If Ald. Laurino has that amount of money to spend, then why isn't she spending it on our unimproved street?

Attention Veterans, check out this Cook County veterans discount program. This is a program authorized by Cook County and that works with participating businesses. It is open to all qualifying veterans and has no costs associated with it. NOTE: I am not involved with this program and do not benefit in anyway from it.
