Renters insurance question

Has anyone received good compensation from their renters insurance on claims?

DM

  • Matt Bowmanville resident since 2001

Compensation implies your are making money on your claim. Claims are based on reimbursement and should not represent a profit. Nor should you expect to lose money in a claim other than your deductible. I own an insurance agency. If you want to have a more detailed conversation, happy to discuss. www.insurewithmatt.com

my renters insurance covered my two stolen bicycles - I was happy enough... not happy that someone got in my garage and stole them but I was able to replace both bikes - one was a Fischer and the other a Trek

Dog Bite

Hi neighbors, my husband was out on his morning run this morning and a large dog bite him. He noticed a woman with a small dog and a large dog on the sidewalk so he gave distance and ran on the parkway to avoid the woman and the dogs. The larger dog pulled away from his owner and bite through two layers of clothing and broke skin. He exchanged numbers and is on his way to the ER.

Any suggestions on the next steps?

  • So sorry that this is happening to you and that the family is not cooperating. You could try the "reverse phone look up" on the whitepages to get information about someone based on their phone number. Hopefully this can be a lesson to all of us on the importance of...

So sorry that this is happening to you and that the family is not cooperating. You could try the "reverse phone look up" on the whitepages to get information about someone based on their phone number. Hopefully this can be a lesson to all of us on the importance of gathering nay information possible when something like this or a car accident etc happens. ALWAYS file a police report to cover your own butt.

Also, if this person is in bankruptcy, foreclosure etc I would be willing to bet that they aren't paying to take their dog to the vet and keep current with vaccinations. That doesn't necessarily mean that the dog had any of those illnesses but just to continue to monitor and go to the doctor if you start experiencing anything different (sorry, that's the nurse in me coming out).

    Best of luck to you!

Stake out the usual places she was walking the dog - see if you can find her again - most likely she won't go back - but you never know. Any other identifying marks or the name of the dog? I will keep an eye out while walking mine.

So sorry this happened to you !

CRAFTJAR in Ravenswood

Hello All,
I'd like to get some community feedback on a concept that I'm working on. I'd like to open a craft supply, kit and workshop boutique on the corner of Lawrence and Hermitage. It would also be a great place to shop really clever gifts and greeting cards. Take a peek at the (in progress) website at: www.craftjar-Chicago.com and let me know your thoughts? Is it a great idea? Waste of space?
Thanks!

Quinn, Rauner, the Libertarian Guy, on none of the above

Not interested in why, but simply one word: who you voting for?

  • kayandcharlie Monticello dweller

women's health care and reproductive rights are important to me. I just checked Rauner's web site and I don't see that he mentions this issue at all. Quinn does address women's equality and repro rights. Besides I completely support raising the minimum wage. I think it's deplorable that rauner made so much money but wants to lower the minimum wage. he back stepped on this but I don't trust him as I think his real belief is that 'free market' will take care of everyone. I'm for Quinn.

RT, as a 2-yr resident of IL and before that all my 80-yr old life in Michigan, I heard a lot about messy IL politics, mainly from Dems. However, as a participant in politics at local, state and national policy issues and elections, I am very concerned about the national trends in policies and laws in states that elect Republican governors and legislators. and now the statements of Gov Christie, head of Rep governor's association. We in IL CANNOT send a message to the country that all this attitude and action is okay. Again, re Rauner, making a lot of money in various ways in business does not equate to successfully running a state. And he still has not laid out a plan on just how he plans to accomplish his goals--it's dangerous to put him in power.

Electric Aggregation Program

I received a letter in the mail about some electric aggregation program for the city. It says a few things about how the program saves us money if eligible, and there's an automatic enrollment. Anyone know more about this, or if/when it's a good idea to opt out? I'll read the docs myself, but wanted some community feedback to counter-balance it :)

  • Last year I did research on this and it turned out a friend of mine had been working for an energy company that uses more "green" technology. It's slowly making its way to Illinois so we don't hear about it much here but after looking at the numbers it made sense to switch to Viridian. If you want to check it out here is a link and my friend Chris' info, he'd be happy to tell anyone about it.

He ALSO put in a new on/off switch to bypass the original one without my consent, claiming the original was dead. This is not true. It worked perfectly fine until he began this 10 week nightmare with my unit, my money, and hiding from me.

And as he MOSTLY did during the 10 weeks of this, he won't return any of my phone calls on his latest debacle.

Unfortunately, I learned too late WHILE HE HELD ON TO MY PROPERTY and hid from public view he is a LONG-TIME crook, incompetent, OR BOTH.

Good Place to Play Pool?

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a bar that has a couple of pool tables as well? Going on a second date with someone who isn't from the city and need some suggestions!! Thank you, Everyblockers!

  • I think Lincoln Lanes, previously suggested, is your best shot for multiple pool tables in Lincoln Square. There's other games there, too, such as shuffleboard.

If you don't mind divey locations, Loafers at Lawrence/Rockwell has a pool table and so does the Jolly Roger* off the Rockwell Brown Line Stop.

*the bar is a typical Chicago nameless Old Style bar next to Jolly Roger Laundromat. I don't know it's real name, but have been calling it the Jolly Roger.

  • I guess I'm just looking for a bar that has a pool table, it won't be a night of pool playing, probably just one game. I'm definitely checking out Konak, Ten Cat, Gingerman and Loafers! Thanks everyone!!

Mangal?

Anyone know why Mangal has been closed the past couple of evenings?

  • Caroline from Silvertown Silvertown Studio

Huh. I actually liked this iteration. I've been there twice in the last month, once they had a decent crowd, but live music (it was impossible to hear over the music in that small space and we were hoping for dinner conversation, so we left), and the second time it was nearly empty on a weeknight. Their chicken wing variations are quite tasty - a nice change from hot, hotter, and hottest.

  • You know, this is a pretty good spot for restaurants, and the ones we have on that stretch of Montrose --the Thai place, Subway, Amistad, the Mexican joint by the L, Margie's, Glenn's, Beand & Bagels, Chicago's Best, etc. --have all been around and making money for at least 10...

The pizza place that was in the Wolcott's/Troquet/Mangal spot was there forever, too. You've got to *really* drop the ball to not succeed there, but the last three management/ownership teams to occupy the space seem to have done exactly that. It's kind of unbelievable.

Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Once in a while, there is a boom that shakes the foundation of the house. After wearing ear plugs with my head next to a large floor fan on high, I was still woken up by tremors.
The neighbors all claim that they don't hear anything, but I don't see how that is a real possibility. One night, after the earth shook me awake, I walked outside at like 4am and started thrashing on the garage next to our house... loudly. I literally took the side of my fist and started pounding this old loose garage with bursts for about a minute. This was a warm night with people s windows open. Nobody stirred. I walked around afterwards for about another min. Nothing. Another night at like 3-4am, I walked out into the basement of the two flat we're attached to with tenants inside, slammed the door behind me, started rummaging through our storage, walked back outside, slamming the door behind me and slammed the fence under their bedroom windows repeatedly. I talked to them the next day and they said they heard nothing.

Now, I am not a light sleeper. I used to live above a bus stop on Ashland and Irving park. I slept like a baby over there. Either this neighborhood has gone rogue or the house is having night terrors.

I've been sleeping at a friends house recently so my blood pressure doesn't start boiling.

This is ruining my life. The police aren't going to do anything (talked to them already). Cameras are too expensive. I have a strong feeling it will be a complete waste of money.

My fiancé can confirm the noises.

  • Sunflower6876 Loving life in Lincoln Square!

I know there was a house that was demoed on Leavitt between Grace & Irving Park. I don't think this happened in the middle of the night, and is a bit too far from you. Maybe try exorcism?

  • Hmmm, I commented on your post when you lived on Grace/Bell. Same issues. Weird. Are cameras installed yet?

I don't want to see my favorite neighborhood turn into a cop hangout where EVERYONE is watched, i mean, don't you hate it when someone is watching over your shoulder when reading a book, or when someone won't stop asking questions when you're trying to watch a movie? I think this won't happen again, these punks wouldn't hit the same place twice. Although it does tick me off that my tires were slashed. Oh well.

Last night I saw a Coyote by Winnemac and Western. I was in the car, however, a young man was walking his dog which barked and caused the coyote to run up the alley.
Just need to be aware. I called 911 and they connected me to 311. I was told they would report it to Animal Control.

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

If you'll re-read the article you linked to you'll notice that it was the *reporter* who claimed coyotes were being released for the purpose of controlling rats. The actual quote from the Animal Control guy (an unfortunate choice of words, to be sure) was, "His job is to deal with all of the nuisance problems, like mice, rats and rabbits."

  • Yes, Joan, I noticed that. And already agreed with you on the clarification.

I understand that it has been a cold and snowy winter, but it shouldn't change your level of responsibility as respectable owners. It is bad enough that at the end of the sidewalk leading out of building complexes is the landing strip for all of the dog urine in the world, but I could look past that if the steaming piles were removed.

The area in particular that I'm referring to is on Wolcott, north of Montrose, south of Sunnyside on the east side of the road. There are probably a dozen big dog turds laying on the snow and even one on the sidewalk. Some new, some old and crusty. It's disgusting. If I had small children, I'd be pissed as these are not "road verges"(?) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_verge) that I'd want my kids walking on or playing on.

It is at the point where the next nice day I'm going to go out there and clean it up myself. I'm just sick of seeing it.

  • Phil L, the city certainly is still baiting, in fact they came through a week or so ago and baited along some of the alleyways in St. Ben's. Here's a number you can call if you can point them toward specific evidence of rat infestation (for example, small holes in the ground that lead to their burrows and tunnelways). They will bait inside the hole and seal it off, so pets in the area should be safe. Just give them the location of the spot. The number is 312-742-7287.

TOKE is a Lincoln Square regular tagger. This "artist" has done nothing in the neighborhood worth keeping, so 311 online reporting continues with responsiveness on the part of Graffiti Blasters. The work shown in the photo has been the most elaborate of his/her works that I've seen this year; which is not saying much and resembles sophomoric skill. This joke might live around Oakley, the epicenter of tagging. Though, his/her tagging is an eyesore, I do not know how one makes the leap to the Bagel and Beans crime and find the accusation irresponsible.

Coyotes rolling around the Square

Riding my bike on Winnemac between Lincoln and Western around 6:30 tonite, saw a coyote trotting east on the street right in front of me. After keeping pace for a few moments, Wiley E. ducked between a couple cars on south side of the street. Hope everyone is keeping a close eye on their cats and small dogs.

Low Flying Plane?

My house literally just shook from what I think was a low flying plane? Anyone else?

  • Thanks, Jeff, I was wondering what that was Sunday, didn't get outside fast enough to see. Definitely was not the Osprey and heli's, and was low and loud.

  • Marine Helicopter Squadron One, which transports the president, replaced its auxiliary helicopters with the MV-22B Osprey. They are used to transport staff, media and Secret Service that accompany the president (the president still travels in a conventional helicopter). The MV-22 tiltrotor is loud when traveling slowly because it has a higher disc loading than a conventional helicopter.
