Artists and Commercial Landlord Partnerships

Regarding the vacant storefronts on the major streets in the Ravenswood / Lincoln Square area, a partnership between landlords & local artists (ceramics, illustrators, photographers, mural artists, & so on) would enable three things: To make an otherwise useful space more visually appealing to show it's true potential to prospective commercial tenants, to beautify the neighborhood, and to allow artists to show off their talent and or product. How much interest is there an something like this?

TV Repair Services (or recycling)

I have a c. 2008 Sony 40" LCD TV that, due to bungling by the movers I hired (long story), isn't working properly anymore. I have the feeling it might be repairable, but I have no idea what the expense for that might be. And new, decent TVs are pretty affordable these days! Any advice on: where I can take this for repairs, or where to junk it if it's not worth the hassle?

(I would be willing to sell it as well, but I don't know how much damage occurred, so I don't want to short-change anybody).

My experience is that fixing an LCD TV costs between $75 and $200, typically. (MUCH more if the display screen itself is damaged in some way.)

You'll have to weigh whether fixing a 6 year old Sony is worth whatever they end up charging- display technology has improved quite a bit since 2008, and you might find that spending $350 to buy a new Sony 40 inch 1080p LCD TV (that is ABT's price for a Sony KDL-40R380B http://www.abt.com/product/84766/Sony-KDL40R380B.html ) makes more sense than spending $150 to fix your older set....

  • Debra J.F. New to Chicago (April '14)

Thanks for the post. I'm more or less in the same boat. The color disappears on me after 45 minutes or so of watching. If I push on the screen, it comes back (while I'm pressing on it). I haven't the slightest idea what that indicates. Anyone? ;-)

  • @Bill Thanks for the recommendations. I'm inclined to get a new one, and reap the benefits of a modern set. I just hate to throw out one that *could* work, you know?

Also, I forgot about ABT. I would prefer to shop with them or some other local business than order from amazon or a large chain.

Lost little brown terrier hanging out in my neighborhood - is this your dog?

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

  • Budlong Woods neighbor Chicago girl for life

Hi for those who were interested in a follow up he is doing great. No luck finding the owner at all so I am looking for a good home for the little guy. I would love to keep him but I have my own and not a lot of space. If you are interested and want more info please private message me.

  • I've seen an old posting on a poll between winnona and claremont with a similar picture. Would be great if this is the dog that has been missing. I will try and see if there is any information on the flyer that is visible tonight.

He knew immediately what was causing various mortar issues and he got back to us with a detailed work proposal. They're not cheap, but I've heard they do top-notch work. We'll see.

  • I second Arrow Masonry — their pricing is competitive but not cheap. They are very easy to work with. Have a major job going on right now and they've been very responsive all along.

Vigilante justice

Considering the lack of state organized enforcement, I'm curious as to what your thoughts are about taking matters into your own hands. The police are responsible for sweeping garbage on the streets into a due process justice system. There are laws in place to protect both the individual citizens and the collective state. There are inherent problems with this design. Criminals may go free and innocent people may suffer. Although, vigilantiism yields far more innocent people into suffering than state operated policing.

What do you think? Do you think vigilante justice is a good idea for your neighborhood? Is the system flawed so much on the policing end that vigilante justice is the only thing to do?

  • Jim Douglas Community resident for 18 years

Vigilante justice will get out of hand. Have you ever seen an old Western movie? Many of them illustrate VJ

  • Dan E Lincoln Square/North Center vintage Vespa rider

Vigilante justice is a terrible idea. There's plenty of evidence of cops who violate the rules as they're enforcing the law, but it doesn't help to have civilians on the streets attempting to do something so important and fraught with risk for which they have no training or authority.

I'd much rather see things like positive loitering where people make their presence known.

What's wrong with policing these days is simply beyond what could be fixed by vigilantism, assuming vigilantism could even be implemented safely. The effects of the drug war, bad "tough on crime" policies and an us-versus-them mindset on the part of many police officers and police departments are, I think, what's behind bad policing.

I recommend the book, The Rise of the Warrior Cop by Radley Balko for a detailed discussion on this.

Transfiguration of our Lord Catholic Church

Does anyone know what is actually going to happen to the church, I heard that they need to raise $1.6 million if they are going to stay open.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I just looked for a website (after looking up their location) and found a dead website. They have a free listing on a parish site. Hopefully a parishioner will see this and chime in! (I used to work near that church until last December.)

  • I believe the church is remaining open till at least June of next year while they resolve the financial issues.

Hello! I'm looking for someone to take over my gym membership at Lincoln Square Athletic Club. I have a monthly contract that expires on 7/31/2015, so 10 months left on the contract. The monthly rate is $79/month. (They offer a discount if you work at a non-proft). LSAC is an awesome gym but I can no longer afford it. The only way to get out of my contract is by moving far away or having someone else take over the membership.

With the membership you can take as many group classes as you'd like (yoga, pilates, spinning, TRX and more!) and of course work out on your own. There is even a pool! Their facilities are very clean, well taken care of and has friendly staff.

Here's their website: http://chicagoathleticclubs.com/locations/lincoln-square/

Ideally I'd like someone to take over the membership ASAP. Please send me an email and we can set up a time to meet at LSAC. Thanks!

  • Hi Alicia, I'm not sure when you posted this, and if you still need someone to take over your membership, but I may be interested. I've never been to the LSAC but I was thinking about going and looking at the facilities this weekend, or early next week (my current gym is in Rosemont).

  • Hi Hector, yes I'm still looking for someone to take over my membership. Let me know if you are still interested after you go check it out. Thanks!

Car accident????

What the heck is going on near montrose and ashland! I am just trying to get home and everything is closed off... Even the ALLEYS are jammed with cars. Was there an accident or are they filming something??

  • Rachel writer, indexer, editor, researcher

They're also doing roadwork on Ashland between Montrose and Lawrence; the northbound lane is completely closed. I would imagine that didn't help.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I actually wrote to Pawar's office since the signs don't offer much help with the times of the road closure. I've seen Ashland closed after midnight for work (which would make more sense...right?) and during afternoon rush hour, causing a traffic nightmare on WB Irving. (Pawar's office did write back...saying it's closed until 7 or 8...)

What was that?

I just saw 2 or 3 military planes fly VERY low over my building that is near Lincoln and Foster? Scared the poop out of me since they were so low and I didn't hear them until they were right near my place. What was that? Is the President in town this weekend or was this something else? I thought that it may very well be a presidential escort. I can't recall them ever flying over my place in the past so I was wondering if it was something else.

  • Dan

3 Ospreys have been doing flyovers. Most likely they were advance party for the President, scouting out Gary airport because Aurora air traffic control is still out.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Dan, That sounds about right. At least I agree with Obama's thinking of not screwing anything else up at ORD. :) He is officially in town. I think I heard him fly over earlier in the evening.

Lincoln Square area infant care - recommendation request

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a local day care that will take infants 3 months and up?

Thanks so much

  • EPDavis Street photographer

I second Craig Tucker's recommendation. We had our daughter at Rainbow Brite since she was 3 months. It's affordable, geared more towards infants and, at the 2700 block of W Summerdale, a good location -- 2 blocks from Swedish Covenant and 3 1/2 blocks from Police District 20. After 20 months there, our daughter will be moving on at the end of this week to the next age level, so unless it's already filled, there may be a spot open.

Cleaning Service?

Does anyone have one they would like to recommend? We kinda got burned on the last one we tried.

  • for two years we have used a company called ana's maids (unrelated to my name). their scheduling is smooth; the fees are reasonable; the service is polite; they provide the supplies; and they send over 2-3 cleaners each time. highly recommend.

  • We use Simple Spaces. They use all natural cleaning supplies which is nice since we have small kids crawling around the floor. They are local (owner lives in Ravenswood) and we are very happy with them. http://simplespaceschicago.wordpress.com/

Just a brutal smell emanating from the river.

  • Also, it seems the magic words are "strong sewage smell" when you call to report it.

The past two mornings while driving to work I kept thinking that I must have stepped in dog poop. Both mornings I actually pulled over to check my shoes (very near the river). Then I worried that something might have died inside my car's engine because it smelled so bad. I will definitely report it next time I smell it.

As I was driving north on Wolcott early this morning around 4AM, I notice a group of 3 to 5 young men standing in the west side alley just south of Warner.
