Purse Stolen While Volunteering

Hi, I'm treating this as a public service announcement. My purse was stolen last night at the Ravenswood Community Kitchen (All Saints Episcopal Church). I arrived to volunteer and the team lead, volunteer coordinator, shared with the other girls and I that we were to place our belongings we wished to not have sitting out in this "locked file cabinet."

I arrived to volunteer and the team lead, volunteer coordinator, shared with the other girls and I that we were to place our belongings we wished to not have sitting out in this "locked file cabinet."

Please be advised that the "locked file cabinet" was a sh*tty cabinet that someone could easily bust into. But, no need as the key to said sh*tty file cabinet was placed on a folding table in the middle of the check in area often left unattended to.

My gut told me to take my purse and keep it with me but I didn't want to appear suspect to the individuals we were helping that evening.

So, silly me, I left it. Only to come back to the "locked file cabinet" about two hours later and bam, its gone.

I'm so thankful I had friends with me to help figure out what to do as the church staff were not very helpful in assisting a quick search of the church property and staff.

I want my loss be a lesson to all doing good out there, keep doing good things for others but leave all personal items at home as many of these locations do not provide adequate storage and if your gut is telling you something, trust it. I'd have my purse and all its fabulous contents today if I would have trusted my gut.

Public sidewalk a safety hazard, and eyesore: 4817 N. Wolcott

If you've ever walked the east side of the 4800 block of N. Wolcott, you've walked over or around the worst stretch of sidewalk in Ravenswood. I'm finally fed up enough to do something about it and would encourage the support of all neighbors. Thanks!

Below is an excerpt from the email just sent to Jim Poole in the Ward 47 office.

Jim,

Just around the block from the new Mariano' there is a public disgrace. Besides the hundreds of residents using it, some customers and a lot of Mariano's employees are having to negotiate it too -- and somebody is going to get hurt.

The sidewalk in front of my neighbor building, at 4817 North Wolcott, managed by ICM Properties, 773-549-5443 has been a terrible hazard and now, ever since this last winter, it is a menace to public safety. I've tripped over this broken, uneven and potholed walkway for over 10 years and I'm fed up.

Please see the attached photos documenting this disgrace, and the building management.

I'm requesting that the Alderman do whatever possible to either force the management to repair this sidewalk in front of their building, or better yet find some emergency money and have the Ward replace it entirely.

Thank you ...

  • Preeti Ravenswood Superstar since 2003

I reported this last week to the Alderman's office with a picture too! Used 4817 N Wolcott as the address as well. We're both tired of walking on that mess. Brad Gregorka (Brad@chicago47.org) is my contact for this. You may want to copy him on the email.

  • ICM, what a surprise. I had 3 friends all rent from them, and all three broke their leases to get out as quickly as possible. I believe they are responsible for for the sidewalk, though I am not certain on that. I wonder if they can be fined for not repairing it?

  • Sheila Pacione Neighbor

Sidewalks are the public way and the city is responsible for replacement when they become a hazard. This can be expedited by vigilant property owners who care about the safety and appearance of their sidewalk and enlist in the 50/50 program where the property owner and city split the cost....

This can be expedited by vigilant property owners who care about the safety and appearance of their sidewalk and enlist in the 50/50 program where the property owner and city split the cost. ( This needs to be done in early January each year and the funds are slim)
An "absentee landlord" of a multiple unit probably couldn't care less about it cause they collect rent and only manage the legally required, agreed upon issues.
However, if Brad pulls up 311 history for these reports, he can fashion a request to CDOT that could entreat them to expedite the repair based on public safety and it being chronically unserviced.
As far as the "timeline" for completion....well that's a bit more complicated. ( as if it weren't already). It's like to be bid out to approved contractors(vendors) who complete the work. Paperwork and the bid process slow stuff down, but at least it's finally addressed.

Where to get a good facial?

Anyone know of a good place near Lincoln Sq to get an awesome, affordable facial? Or had used a Groupon and was pleased? Thanks!

  • Ellllly8 ***

Salon Elan Vital is definitely a great place to go. The owner, Nahrein is really concerned about customer satisfaction and has been consistently. The salon at 4737 N. Damen is a newer location, but she has been in the business for at least 10 years or more. I would highly recommend it.

  • Wax Man A Men's Grooming Place!

Hi Kelly! Come over to Wax Man Spa on Lawrence. I've been doing facials for 16 years, I opened my space this past November. There are 2 other estheticians working with me. Check out our reviews on yelp. I don't want to come across as the best ever facial but I've never had a complaint. I invite you to check us out! Hope to hear from you!

All Saints' Episcopal Church's - Now them!

I have lived in the neighborhood for 6 years. Today, while walking past All Saints' Episcopal Church during the food pantry I saw one guy urinating outside the church in broad day light! Then I saw men going up to people's homes stealing the bags of plastic eggs that were left by a neighboring church opening them and then throwing them on our lawns. I asked them to pick them up since no one is paid to clean up their mess and they laughed at me. The food bank that I donate to them get good from are the same people making out neighborhood terrible. I reported it to the church. This is insane

Why

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Definitely get in touch with Lori or Fran. They have two security officers there on Tuesday nights. So sorry this happened. :(

Hi neighbors!

I posted this on craigslist, but I thought I might have some more luck finding friendly, trustworthy help here, accompanied by a $30 thank you from me.

I need help moving a large plant from the fourth floor of a stairwell-only apartment in the Lincoln Square area, to my apartment in Ravenswood, which is on the second floor.

I am hoping to find someone who has a pick-up truck or SUV, but if you think you can help me fit it in or tie it to my sedan, that works too. :-)

The photo was taken pre-trim, so it is significantly shorter and more kempt. The ceramic pot is about 1.5 feet in diameter, and probably about 40 pounds.

I need to move it this Saturday, April 19th, sometime between 11-1PM. It should not take more than 30-45 minutes, tops.

Thanks for looking!

Jenny

  • I can help, we have an SUV. Please email me at kellykapple@gmail.com. My fiance is willing to do the job. We live in the area :)

  • L

Kelly sounds like a good choice. But, if something happens and she can't make it, try Task Rabbit.

  • If it is within walking distance, you could rent/purchase/make a make-shift rolling dolly and wheel it there via sidewalk? Good luck!

Anyone see the red moon?

  • I was sure it'd be too overcast to see it so I didn't stay up. I also couldn't get a clear answer on what time to expect it. I wish I'd seen it though! Very cool. There's another blood moon in October and two more next year--very rare sequence.

Everytime I go there I have a story about them. And it's consistent. I've been going there for over a year now. Today I went through the line and the girl didn't say one word to me except how much I owed her. I said that you before I left and she didn't break a smile. I often am ignored bc the girls are talking to each other and making jokes. One day the girl barely handed me my change bc she was so busy talking to the other checkout girl behind me. I wonder if anyone else notices this. It has almost made me stop going there. I don't like rude customer service. At least respond when I say hi, bye or thanks.

By posting the comment, social media and marketing savvy store owners might actually become aware that their brand is being negatively impacted by the last employee a customer encounters upon leaving the store. Rents and rate of competition are rising very quickly in this neighborhood; dismissing a legit comment as whining could lead to a much bigger problem, which could lead to the closing of this store. Especially when other stores show they value customers and want them to return by proving them with a decent shopping experience.

Suspicious activity at Belle Plaine and Lincoln and in North Center Town Square

Has anyone else noticed loitering and some generally odd happenings in this area. I see a car parked with people getting in and out and people loitering near the buildings. My guess is that there might be some drug sales going on. I'll be contacting the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone else has notified them.

  • I've walked through there on afternoon coffee/CVS runs, and after school its a lot of kids hanging out in the alley. It never really seemed more than bored teens hanging out near sources of drinks/snacks, but if it set off alarm bells for you I'm glad you reported it.

  • Botkin Amateur photographer.

I suspect the alderman is well-aware or that area. It's long been a hangout spot for teenage burnouts, which is why you'll often see a cop SUV parked there for a couple hours after schools let out. Some small-time drug transactions wouldn't surprise me, as they'll occasionally be out there smoking weed. I see them loitering there a lot less these days than in years past, which makes me think the police presence has probably chased them off to another spot.

  • william V northcenter resident

I'm going to talk to the alderman as well. This pocket has been sketchy at times. I have heard rumors of drug dealing. I know some of the businesses there have complained about some activity in the alleys as well.

When our 6 year was a newborn my wife and I were forced to park on Ravenwood just because they entire neighborhood was jammed with cars from outside our neighborhood. I was blown away at how these church going members would tear in and out of the neighborhood. Pulling up on lawns, parking basically on what ever surface they could find, noise violations up the wazoo, etc. etc. You can try and talk to them about it. We did when I lived over there to ZERO change in behavior. In fact it sounds like it's just gotten worse. Hate to say it, but maybe they need to go permit in that area. Not fair to all the good people who live there weekly and someone is going to get hit. I know this because it almost happened to me many, many times. Beautiful building - shame.

Sure there are always going to be some idiots but did you know that the new principal got rid of most of the out of area kids & eliminated a lot of problems that way? Did you know that the IB program doubled in size last year and is the 3rd most successful one in the city? And there are cops in front of every single CPS high school (including Payton etc) but Amundsen often has extras because there is a satellite police station located in the building (however virtually nothing for them to do with the students.)

Ready to have your area turn into Wrigleyville? Finally, what positive does our community get from this? What traffic studies were done? Personally, I think the rating system here is rigged! Waters being a 5 and all. The energy of this school with the parents, teachers and faculty are amazing. As a parent whose child is in the kindergarden class, I was so surprised about how much money the parents have been able to raise year in and out. My child has drama, gym, art, music, and math/computer class. The teachers are great. As a realtor myself, when I list a property and say Waters on it.... it sells. Why have we been stuck at a 5 for 3 years. We are on same path as coonley, bell, blaine etc. Parents, this school is on that track! Highly recommend!!!!!!

I bought 4 items that should have cost ~$26. I paid by credit card but didn't need to sign for my purchase. Even worse, I wasn't handed a receipt and actually noted that fact as the cashier seemed real flustered but moved on anyway.

It wasn't until the next day that I logged in, checked my transactions and saw that Mariano's charged me $84.69.

I went back to bring this up with customer service and was given a "we'll get back to you" response which, in the scheme of opening a huge facility like that, is probably pretty low on their list of things to worry about especially because I have no proof in the form of a printed receipt.

I just wanted to let everyone know so that if these opening glitches do happen, make sure to get proof of purchase and all that. I know it seems like common sense but how many times have you just breezed through a transaction?

I'll update this post if they actually get in touch (they took my number) but I'm doubtful.

So inside I went, and the owner gave me the lowdown on the shop. She obtains her produce from local farms, and the idea is that you can pick stuff out, like certain veggies, and they make them to go - basically, making eating well more convenient for the customer. I tried a peach smoothie, which is all the basics - yogurt, honey, and fruit. No additives!

While reading up on this to post on my food-enthusiast blog (http://vixteroni.wordpress.com), I came across this article from a while back:

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20130905/north-center/veg-head-battles-junk-food-with-customized-snack-packs

If you are around Lincoln and Irving Park, be sure to check this out - I think there is a lot of potential there.

  • Jen Baron JBaron

Wow! Good to know! Had no idea about this place and I will be sure to check it out! We need more places like this! And we need to support them! So keep spreading the word! Very cool!

  • I don't understand why Veg Head purposely tries to alienate a good portion of potential customers by stating "This is an anti-Ayn Rand Establishment". I am not a serious Randite, but I have read some of her books and found them thought provoking. To me, this signage just seems like bad business. It is the reason I have never been in Veg Head despite living around the corner (and loving guac).

Easter bunny pictures

Anyone know where I can go to get a picture of my daughter with the Easter bunny? She is too young for egg hunts but I would like a picture.

  • Nancy McGarry Eager to learn about the neighborhood

The Lincoln Town Center Shopping Center on McCormick and Touhy in the center of the mall.

  • Marilyn Maggi Tamayo Long time resident of now trendy, north center

I always take my son to the bunny at Harlem Irving Plaza. It's a bit of a cruise but their bunny is great and way cuter than the one at lincolnwood mall, in my pinion.

Please report problems about new Cubs lot

The new Cubs parking lot at Rockwell and Irving is sure to cause issues for neighbors. Please be sure to contact the Cubs 773-404-4175 or Alderman Pawar (773) 868-4747 or
info@chicago47.org with all concerns. This was thrust upon the neighborhood without input from the residents in a surprise move. The meeting with the Cubs, alderman and residents was 4 days before the first weekend game and there are still open questions and concerns.

  • Hi every blockers, would anybody like to comment about the parking lot for a college news story i am doing. I would really appreciate it. Please contact me at ricardo.guzman@loop.colum.edu

  • Any nearby residents willing to comment on the parking lot, please contact me at ricardo.guzman@loop.colum.edu. I would really appreciate it. It is for a college homework assignment.

Mariano's

Huge space!

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

Sounds like we've got a high class of problems in this part of town with our numerous grocery store options.

  • Amazing what some people can get out of a photograph … All I saw was produce.

Mess at Wilson and ravenwood

Is the metra viaduct a storage space for the homeless?

  • And clearly this topic has lost focus. The topic was people storing bags of clothes, blankets, alcohol bottles etc at the metra viaduct which is private property anyway. Not about homelessness per say. Legally that's considered dumping. So trying to make this into a moral issue is off point. I've said it before if you care so deeply then go over and grab there blankets and offer to wash them. If they catch you, they'll probably curse you out anyway.

  • My compassion and heart go out to family's that are in need. They are the ones who I truly have a heart for. Not a bunch of drunk men who probably have more income then I do. Who choose to sleep on the red line and store there stuff everywhere....

Who choose to sleep on the red line and store there stuff everywhere. The city of Chicago isn't compassionate, they will dump that stuff in the trash. The CTA isn't compassionate because they will call the police and /or put someone off the train for sleeping there. Yes they have signs posted at ohare and midway

Help with a Partial Move

Hi, I'm wondering what the EveryBlock community has to share regarding alternative ways to get help with a partial move--loading a 16ft Penske rental truck from my 1BR, 3rd floor walk-up, for my move to the west coast.

I'm currently getting some quotes from moving companies for a partial move, but I'm assuming this is going to be the most expensive option. I also don't want to ask my friends to help (the cheapest option?).

That said, has anyone had luck posting an ad for this kind of assistance on Craigslist or some other site? If so, how did it work out? Any other cost-effective suggestions? Ideally, I'd like to be spending $300 max (I hope this isn't horribly unrealistic on my part).

  • Post the task on TaskRabbit.com and someone will help you out.

  • Check out microshipinc.com. I have used them twice for partial moves and was very satisfied.

Borelli Pizza....awesome family-centric fun and dining

After reading a post about this place, I decided to check it out. I wound up throwing my pre-teen son a surprise birthday party there this past Friday. Great time had by all. This place is a real gem. I do think the owners---who are amazing people--should market the concept as a family fun place, as this is not the type of pizza place you go to for a first date...or even a second or third date...it's where you go...

I do think the owners---who are amazing people--should market the concept as a family fun place, as this is not the type of pizza place you go to for a first date...or even a second or third date...it's where you go with your kids to dine and have a good time. Lots of kids running around and playing arcade games, ping pong and even cards. The milkshake bar is super fun and yummy. If you have kids and like pizza (and like BYOB), I highly recommend checking out Borelli Pizza on the 2100 west block of Lawrence. We will be back. thanks for a great party for my son!
