Buckingham Fountain water

Hey guys does anyone know when they turn the water off for the winter at Buckingham Fountain?
Here's some pictures of the fountain taken last weekend.

  • Freefall Lincoln Park Resident

Anybody know when it's getting turned on this year?

  • Erik H Loyola & UofC alumnus, Sox fan, Chicago Loot Drop

Officially, it gets turned on in April, but they make a decision based on weather. I would guess that they're waiting for the threat of sub-32F temperatures to pass before they start pumping again.

Parking lot on State & Goethe?

Does anyone know what happened to the parking lot on the south west corner of State & Goethe? It's closed but I heard nothing & there are no signs posted.

  • R L In GC since 1972!

No plans yet, the owners (brother & sister in a family trust) are in California and fighting on the disposition of the property.

  • Scott Marks Gold Coast resident since 1984

Current zoning is RM-5 (residential, multi-unit, 4 stories). Absent a zoning change, which most in the neighborhood would resist, this will limit what can be built there.

  • R L In GC since 1972!

There is also a 16 foot property line issue.

Oak Street Beach sand sculpture

I can make out WELCOME TO CHICAGO ipv. I have NO idea who these people are, but they have a small front loader helping them do it, so it is some commercial venture. Anyone know what it up? (You will have to magnify the picture to make it out)

  • The snow sculptures that showed up in Grant Park over the winter were sponsored by Florida tourism. Crafty. I'm not sure about the ones in the picture.

  • Good Morning.
The Sand Sculpture is created by a group called CHOOSE CHICAGO.

Does Old Navy have a factory in Chicago?

Old Navy is running a sale right now on a $25 pair of pants that includes a free tee shirt. I bought a pair on S. State St. and all the inside stitching looks like the pants are hand sewn (sewn by hand on a commercial sewing machine). Do they have a factory or a warehouse in Chicago?

  • The majority of workers overseas working in these factories are under some form of indentured servitude, paid very little (or sometimes nothing if they owe "debts" that they must pay off). Most are forced to live on site, and they aren't always allowed to leave. The conditions they work under are deplorable and sometimes downright dangerous.

Yes, I think that it is more than fair to say that these workers are oppressed under a form of slavery.

  • Do our unions make any sort of an effort to teach overseas factory workers how to organize so they can work in safer conditions and for better wages? Is that even possible?

Large Boom near Union Station

Between 10:00 and 10:30 am we felt and heard a large boom noise around the Union Station area. It shook our building, though it was mainly felt on the south side of the building.

Anyone else experience this, or know any details?

Commonly train activity will shake our building a bit. But this was an extraordinary noise and vibration. Nothing seems to be happening outside the building since it occurred.

  • HKKChgogirl resident

Sure hope someone knows. I didn't hear anything but I live way north of there.

  • HeatherH in SL South Loop resident

There were brief but really loud fireworks at the end if the Hawks game at Soldier Field. Timing would be about right. Startled us too!

  • acmeacme Worker bee

    Thanks, Heather!

It was in the AM Friday from 10:30-11. Fortunately, it turns out a truck accidentally dropped it's load in our loading dock and that was the cause of the boom and shake.

Thanks for trying to assuage my fears, though! It's highly appreciated!
