Humboldt Haus On Sacramento Blvd. and North Ave. Now Open!

Great news, it is now open but not the deli bar yet. I talked to Mike who said he was a co-owner and the hours now are 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. Monday to Saturday and 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Sunday. Mike also added that the 16 taps section will be open in another month. I asked him to join us on Nextdoor and Everyblocks and inform all of the date when the whole restaurant will be open for business. I am looking forward to the grand opening, i will be thirsty! The name of the place is Humboldt Haus.

HopeFest 2014 @NewLife @ Homan/Division

Any other neighbors experience:

*Division St. closed off all day Saturday
*Parking on surrounding residential streets overburdened with attendees
*People pulling in and backing out of the over-capacity church parking lot dangerously into oncoming traffic (and subsequent horn honking, etc) to go look for parking elsewhere
*Trash left behind by attendees on our streets, parkways and sidewalks (see photo)
*The absence of notification to area residents about the Fest

Riotfest tix

Last year i heard that residents of Humboldt Park are offered free tickets to Riotfest. Any truth to that?

  • I just moved to the north side of the park and sent them an email to see if they're offering anything to residents this year. I'll update when/if I get a reply!

  • Azra Owner/primary care providor at West Town Daycare

I sent an email and Facebook message last year with no response back. Seems as though they don't want people knowing but will give tix if residents directly in front ask for them. I've been lucky two years in a row. Considering the traffic and the fact the the music is LOUD inside our homes with closed windows, it's a fair trade.

construction at Lafayette school

Hi all!
Has anyone else been disturbed by the construction noise at Lafayette school (2714 W Augusta) lately? They've been starting in the 6:00am hour, well before the city ordinance allows. I've called police to complain several times and went to Alderman Maldonado's office last week to file a complaint, but it started this morning again at about 6:15am. Wondering if others are noticing this too...

  • Rai Rai Rai Rai

Ok I just can't take it any longer!! Each day the constructions starts just a bit earlier than the day before! This morning I heard those machines as warily as 5am!! This has gotten out of hand and something needs to be done!! I've called 911 several times and each time I'm told a car will be sent but that never happens. Does any have any other suggestions?

    Hi Rai Rai,

I feel your pain. I called the police on about 10 different occasions, but no one ever showed. I made an earlier post (see my post above from July 2nd) saying that I have a reporter from the Reader who is doing a piece on this, as well as Alderman Maldonado's total lack of response to this and other neighborhood issues. If you'd like to speak with the reporter please click on my profile and send me an email with your contact info and I will be glad to pass this along. Unfortunately this seems to be our only means for getting anything done, since cops won't show up and the Alderman has made it clear that he will not take any action. I've contacted Maldonado's office several times about this, and my messages have gone unreturned and I have been hung up on. I'm very happy that they're working on the school, but waking up residents for months at 5 or 6am is really unacceptable.
    Thanks!

Humboldt Haus?

Any idea on when Humboldt Haus will open there deli or is this turning into another liquor store as evidenced by the by liquor sign?

  • Squeak-O Your friendly neighborhood Gladys Kravitz.

They are not running just another liquor store. The selection is really good, quality wines from small producers and a nice craft beer selection priced well. I stopped in and had a nice chat with the owner. He's looking forward to getting the deli open but things with the city and building capital take time. Stop in and talk to the man behind the counter before passing judgment.

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

I talked to a owner some time ago, still no deli, I think the sign sucks! I had big hopes for this place, first just a liquor store, deli did not open in February and now this ghetto sign. Just what the neighborhood doesn't need. I talked to the man behind the counter so I guess I can pass judgment.

(looking for advice) I'm recently married and have lived my entire life in Chicago.. everywhere from the south side, to west town, to Lincoln park.. my wife on the other hand is completely new to city living.. She's from a smaller town, but still not totally naive. We recently found a condo that we love near Thomas st. and a block west of Western ave. and we are thinking about submitting an offer. Neither of us have ever lived in the area, and my number one concern is her safety. I've asked a few friends that live near by and they all seem to have a very positive outlook regarding the neighborhood. At the same time i've also gotten very harsh, negative comments from some of my college friends that come from towns similar to my wife's. Any advice about moving to the neighborhood (both positive/negative) would be greatly appreciated!!

  • I recently moved to Humboldt Park (at least I think it's Humboldt still- northwest corner of north & western) after having spent my entire life in pretty well-heeled suburbs- Lemont, Yorkville, Naperville, etc. I'm a single female, living with my pooches and I've not yet felt unsafe meandering around at night (admittedly- if I'm west of home, I'm generally taking the dogs for a walk). My street is quiet, the neighbors are neighborly... I really couldn't have asked for a better spot to land.

  • The area has really started to change for the better. Every time I look, there seems to be a new development and trendy restaurant popping up. Very happy with my choice to purchase in this area. Good luck with your decision!

Still going strong @ 10:50pm. Helicopters, police sirens, ambulance sirens, car horns, people yelling/screaming, public intoxication, infants still awake, speeding cars / motorcycles, fireworks, arrests, and gun shots.

I don't understand why the city would fund such a violent, out of control event.

Who is paying for all the law enforcement right now? I know it's not the PR Parade Committee.

We on the other hand do this on July 4th, we will get pulled over and get arrested for sure ... Cuz the law is we can't do that...... So the law foes away for 4 days for this BS ... Plus the park sucks by my place since it starts which again is wrong we have permit parking on our block so that means we get the right to park on our block not everybody else and not get a ticket for it....

Ann: I'd suggest getting involved with CAPS in your beat, and to contact the neighborhood association EHPNA as they have worked for many years on accountability issues with the festival organizers, city, and police.

Most city workers, police, etc. simply don't want to be around the park during the Festival so if you want any kind of service you are going to have to be insistent. If you saw illegal activity, you needed to call 911 for service. This includes illegal parking. You really need to get as many neighbors on your block involved.

If you don't call 911, then the city statisticians will relay the information that the Festival causes no problems; there may be even less law enforcement next year.

It really irks me the damage that is done to the park, which is such a beautiful place. I don't understand how throwing trash on the ground and abusing the park has come to be an acceptable form of revelry, cultural, historical, traditional or otherwise.

Trash is trash. Damage is damage. Hopefully the Festival organizer will be held accountable and will be forced to pay the tens of thousands of dollars required to re-seed, replace damaged trees, re-aerate compacted soil, etc. so that there is EQUAL treatment of the park following the festivals it hosts.

Last year, the Park District slammed the OTHER Festival with $50,000+ in damage fines, and no Park Personnel had to pick up garbage.

There is no reason why there should be a suspension of laws during this Festival or any other event. Some of us have been complaining for years about the lawlessness that plagues our neighborhoods during PR Fest, and city officials and the police are reluctant to take action. So, the residents suffer and the revelers pretty much do whatever they want with impunity.

If we had an Alderman who represented the entire community, I think that we could have a respectful family-oriented Festival that doesn't F up the 'hood.

Hi All,

Just passing the following on from an alderman email, should anybody know unionized contractors who are in need of work. Contact Maldonado's office for more info (I don't know anything about this, just being neighborly). :)

The Chicago Public Schools has asked me to alert residents about summer construction jobs in our area. If you are a skilled craftsman or laborer in a union, please reply by sending us your resume. We will forward all resumes to CPS. Deadline is June 19th.

Urgent Need for Local Construction Workers
Ames, ChiArts, Casals, Stowe and McAuliffe are all undergoing major construction or remodeling this summer. The General Contractors need to hire more local union workers to complete the projects. Some projects will require significant overtime.
Why do they need local workers?
CPS, and all government agencies, have an obligation and responsibility to hire locally for these local jobs that are funded by our tax dollars. CPS--and their general contractors--are also eager to meet this policy requirement. That's why they called us.

Please forward this message to any union laborer or skilled tradesman who lives in the area. They should reply to this email by attaching their resume. We will forward all resumes to the CPS department responsible for overseeing contract compliance with local hiring goals.

Sincerely,
Roberto Maldonado, Alderman
26th Ward

Construction in 1600 block of Richmond

The construction finally began today. (Well the excavation anyway.) It began before the 8am start time dictated by Chicago's noise ordinance. I called the police. The officer who was sent out, told me the guys claimed their permit said 7am. How do you get a permit for 7am in a residential area? How do we take this complaint further? Do we report this to our alderman? I plan on calling every morning that they start before 8am. In case anyone else is interested in calling to complain, I learned this morning, that calling for this issue is a 911 call, not a 311 call.

  • anonomous1108 Not left or right. Call them as I see them.

Construction is a temporary thing !
Relax and all will be good. Your dwelling will be better off and more valuable when the construction is over.
There will always be construction because change is the only thing that is constant.
Like you will be living somewhere else soon if you cant handle a little change because there will be tons more of it !!!
    So ,
To summarize. This problem will fix itself. Either you get used to it or you will be dwelling somewhere else !
