Humboldt Haus On Sacramento Blvd. and North Ave. Now Open!

Great news, it is now open but not the deli bar yet. I talked to Mike who said he was a co-owner and the hours now are 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. Monday to Saturday and 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Sunday. Mike also added that the 16 taps section will be open in another month. I asked him to join us on Nextdoor and Everyblocks and inform all of the date when the whole restaurant will be open for business. I am looking forward to the grand opening, i will be thirsty! The name of the place is Humboldt Haus.

  • That's my concern. The hanging out culture that's allowed by certain liquor stores is a big problem.

Good point - and those of us who live nearby will have to make sure it doesn't happen.

So… I got a call supposedly from Com-ed today trying to sell me on a fixed rate plan called "Spark Green Something Something" … the agent had an Indian accent and was a little bit difficult to understand. He told me they could offer me a fixed rate in the alternative of a fluctuating rate. He said something about a verification code they could give me and that it was "free to cancel" at anytime. It sounded like if I gave verbal assent over the phone they'd switch it over right away. I didn't know anything about it, so I said they could mail something to the house about it, but he wasn't saying Spark was a separate company… but that it was a Com-ed plan.

Anyone hear this version of the story?

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

There are all kinds of door to door-phone salesmen who come around. It is difficult to know if they are legit or not.

In the past companies offered a fixed rate plan. When prices went up they went bankrupt and consumers were harmed.

Best to check this out. Call Com Ed, Call Citizens Utility Board. Call Consumer affairs in City Hall. search the name of the company, lawsuits, complaints on the internet.

Last week I read an article posted on EB as a link to the Humboldt Park Portal, which attempted to say that the Bloomingdale Trail will ruin the Humboldt Park neighborhood, or "enclave".. After reading the population stats offered by the "Portal", I decided to actually look up the stats from the census.
The US Census reports either as a county or a census tract, so I looked at the approx. 20 tracts which covers the area bounded by Western Ave., Chicago Ave., Central Park, and Bloomingdale.
There is a total population of 38,522. Of that the largest segment is caucasion at 18,729 (or 49%) The second largest segment is Black, at 6,574 (or 17%). This leaves 34% for "other" which is made up of Asian, Latino, and people that identify as 2 or more races.
After hearing for years that Humboldt Park was a "Puerto Rican " neighborhood, I was surprised to see the actual facts. And while some city maps define Humboldt Park as going all the way to Cicero Avenue and Kinzie Street, going farther West and South on the census map only gives a larger number of Blacks in the population stats.

Seems like a pretty unfounded hypothetical opinion (with a few grammatical mistakes I will overlook). Surprised NPR would bother picking up on it. I do hear his point, and agree that completely changing the demographics and gentrifying the neighborhood would change its feel and likely raise housing prices, but the 606 is not to blame for that. It's a byproduct of progress. I've watched it happen to Bucktown, and I'm a little sad to see the boutiques that made the neighborhood special get replaced with chain stores, but I don't think anyone would argue that the neighborhood is cleaner and safer than it was 20-30 years ago.

FYI, I googled the writer and emailed him to ask the source of his stats, since I couldn't find them anywhere. I'll update here if he answers.

Update on problem liquor store at 3635 W. Armitage

I'm not sure why EB didn't post the story..... A few weeks back, citizens complained to Alderman Moreno about the liquor store at 3635 W. Armitage. It seems that the store is in Alderman Maldonado's ward, but the surrounding residents affected by the activities are in Alderman Morenos ward. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140131/logan-square/aldermen-go-head-head-over-controversial-logan-square-liquor-store

While I live several blocks away, I have heard complaints about this specific business for years and years in local CAPS meetings.

On April 8TH, there was hearing about the store http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140409/logan-square/neighbors-air-grievances-about-armitage-food-at-city-hall

One of the Alderman showed up to the hearing to represent his constituents, the other did not. Justice is sometimes slow, but hopefully this store owner gets the message and cleans up his act, and therefore the neighborhood. CONGRATS to all of the neighbors that worked so tirelessly to get some relief.

  • Alderman Maldowannadonuthin' has accepted $1500 per year for 4 years in campaign contributions from the liquor store, which might explain why he won't engage the community.

  • Even though this store is in Logan Square just north of our border, this issue affects those of us who work and live in HP and concerns me as a voter.

As reported in a DNAinfo article published in February, the company that owns Armitage Food, listed as IBNN Inc. contributed $1,500 a year to Maldonado's campaign in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

This seems to have affected his motivation to handle the resident's concerns. The people deserve a leader that is willing to attack difficult problems with a closed fist rather than a palm facing up.

The school selection process is already underway. submissions started last fall, and they're calling people based on their acceptance or wait-list rankings for this fall. You may have to look to a temporary solution (some daycare places offer Kindergarten) or try to move to a spot which sits in the neighborhood boundary zone for that school. There are plenty of options, but it does take some effort to figure where you'd like to go, assess availability of spots, etc. As Robin said, cpsobsessed is a good spot to go with questions.

Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Badlands, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone. Took the northern route back from Glacier. Nothing much coming back - just stopped at Mall of America on the way back.

Custer State Park was great - tons of buffalo and other wildlife. The Badlands had formations unlike anything else we've seen. Tetons had incredible views and great hiking.

  • My only 'westward' road trip involved The Rockies, Badlands and Black Hills National Forest. All highly recommended!

Fence in the Park

Does anyone know why there is a fence around the park on Kedzie and Division? I called the alderman's office back in November to inquire and the assistant said she had no clue. She mentioned that she would find out and call me back and I am still waiting for answer.

  • CM,
Thanks for your input. However, I was at the Humboldt Park Advisory Council meeting in November when the park supervisor said it was about the landscaping.

I agree, it does look like the same stuff that they put along highways near open fields during the winter to keep the snow off of the roads, but drifting snow has never really been a problem on Kedzie Avenue.

  • I have lived across the street for over 40 years and have never seen a fence in the park - at least not where it is still standing today. I hope it comes off soon because it really looks terrible and summer will be approaching us soon - I hope!

Neighborly Area?

Hey future neighbors. We are seriously looking into an apartment near Washtenaw and Le Moyne. Is there anything about this area that we should know before signing? Is it safe and a community-focused area of Humboldt Park? Clean? Thanks for your input.

  • Nathan Dougal 13 year Humboldt Park resident

Exactly, Sarah Marmor! Past a certain apparent age and demeanor, other people are irrelevant to gang members. They have a good sense of who is "just a citizen" and who is involved in their subculture. I, too, have experienced a neutral-to-polite attitude
from neighbors and passersby who are possibly, probably or obviously gang-involved.

  • Nathan Dougal 13 year Humboldt Park resident

Subtle alliances can be formed with such folks too, presumably along the lines of familiarity, a shared community and a certain value of respect. Subtle alliances can be formed with such folks too, presumably along the lines of familiarity, a shared community and a certain value of respect. Sometimes it may be "good business practice" (of gang members) not to incite those who may report about a profitable (drug) enterprise. Sometimes, I have had to enact a firm stance with gangsters, where I have asked them to move on from hanging out proximal to me and my building (with some good results).

The especially good news is that the last sentence above relates to the past and I have not had any hanging out or dealing close to my home. I have never refrained from calling the police about illegal activities. The alliances, being neighborly or friendly do not occlude a sense of pursuing lawfulness . . . why would one ever tolerate lawlessness? Beyond imparting a sense of watchfulness or even vigilance to those not doing right, there is no
need for direct engagement of nefariousness when there are channels to pursue with the police... just my 2 cents about the subtlety of it all.

RATS In the neighborhood- problem area? Need to film some this month.

Does anyone have experience or know anyone that has had tenants with vouchers? Does CHA pay rent on time?

  • Do some YouTube searches so you can see what other property owners have been through.

  • As of August 2013 private landlords can't turn down a renter due to the voucher program status alone. If you decide not to go with this tenant after considering them, you'll need to have a reason besides the Section 8 status or a better qualified renter in the unit instead of them, in case they claim discrimination.

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2005-01-23/business/0501230474_1_million-mixed-use-project-commercial-space-eminent

As you can see, the city spent millions in order to give Bickerdike the lots for $1 each. When you go by the building on Division and California, look up at the windows and try to guess how many units are occupied? Many of them are vacant, and always have been. And the commercial spaces in all 3 buildings are largely empty and have been for 8 years.
This is part of the scheme- say that we desperately need subsidized housing; take the land from a private citizen; give it to your friends at the subsidized housing group; they build it and make millions of dollars in "development fees" and then they can't even fill the units.
A few years after this scam, Bickerdike pulled the same nonsense with the Zapata homes near Armitage and Drake. They could have purchased dozens of foreclosed and vacant homes and 2 flats to rehab as subsidized housing. But instead, they wanted to BUILD housing, so they could rake in the millions in development fees.

BTW, those units cost $375,000 EACH to build. And, did you know that it is legal for a non-profit housing group to own a for-profit subsidiary construction firm so that those millions can get passed on to the heads of the non-profit? Did you know that this project was a no-bid contract to it's own construction company?
Your tax dollars hard at work..........
