Advice on Sealing Split-Faced Block

Hi neighbors - For those who live in a condo with split-faced block, any advice or lessons you can share on having it treated to protect against moisture? I'm on the board for a 6-unit condo with split-faced block on two sides of the building. We last had it treated in 2010, and I'm calling some contractors for quotes to get it done again in the spring. That said, I wanted to do a little research beforehand. Any information you can share on local contractors, types of sealing products, or things to ask about or watch out for would be much appreciated!

  • Resident of LP In Lincoln Park since 1980

Call Arrow Masonry ( 800-882-5768) and ask for Mike. He has been doing this for a long time and will make sure your brick is sealed correctly. It's expensive but should be good for 10 years. If not done correctly, the split-faced brick sucks in water like crazy and causes leaks all through the building. After years of leaks, we finally got our split-faced brick sealed and the leaks stopped completely.

  • Venson Kuchipudi 2427-2429 Clybourn Association President

Yes, Mike at Arrow did my condo and so far no leaks and it's been about 5 years. He will give you a quote with all the products used.

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

Where to donate mini toiletries

Does anyone know where I can donate mini toiletries? I have so many from hotel stays/birthday gifts/holiday gifts - and I really just don't use them. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can give these away?

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • I don't mind going 20 mph before and after school. I was used to doing that where I used to live. However, the hours were posted and the lights were flashing. Not sure how safe it is to be scanning Lane Tech grounds for students while I'm driving...even at 20...

I don't mind going 20 mph before and after school. I was used to doing that where I used to live. However, the hours were posted and the lights were flashing. Not sure how safe it is to be scanning Lane Tech grounds for students while I'm driving...even at 20 mph. Does that mean if kids are anywhere outside of the building, we're responsible for knowing that? Seems incredibly vague. Give us 7-9 a.m. and 2:45-4:45 p.m. or whatever cushion properly covers school starting/ending and I'm happy to crawl along. Anything else seems unreasonable. Or am I missing something?

  • I agree, Liz. I think 20 is reasonable, but they need to be more clear about the times. Like others have mentioned. I go 20 whenever I pass there now. I don't want to end up arguing in court that I didn't see any students. That would be hard to prove. I've lived places where the school speed limit is 15, but they always made it clear with additional signage.

Woman Attacked at 3300 Block of Sheffield

This morning there were police officers outside my home investigating the attack of a woman which happened at approximately 5:00am in the west alley of the 3300 block of Sheffield (between Roscoe and School). The woman was walking to her car and was attacked in or directly outside her garage. Fortunately someone heard her screams and called 911 and the attacker was caught. The police officer said she is in critical condition at a hospital. I don't know whether the attacker knew the victim or it was a random act of violence.

As for Voting Tunney Out, I agree, but who's running against him? Mark Thomas appears to be back in the race, but where does the 44th alderman race stand? Maybe I should make a thread for it.

Let's talk about the Halloween Parade!

The annual Halloween parade is coming soon and I just wanted to talk about it.
I look forward to it every October.
What does everyone think of it?

I'll start:

PROS: Feels welcoming for all walks of life including young children
Has a good neighborhood vibe. Doesn't "stress" our neighborhood like Pride Parade.

CONS: Hard to know when the parade has started and ended. So it could use a little more structure. There are hardly any floats, just people walking....

Here's the information that I found for 2014:
http://www.northalsted.com/pages/northalsted_halloween_parade_2014/157.php

FYI: I'm have no ties to the parade other than it's about a block from where I live.

  • is that a new route? Why did I think the parade was only from Addison to Grace?

  • I've always watched from Aldine/Roscoe. So, I thought it's always started at Belmont and ended somewhere north of Roscoe.

Lost Keys

Lost keys somewhere in Lakeview/Lincoln Park. The keychain is a small, blue dog collar. The tag on the collar is a purple heart that says "Chulo". The keys are not important, but the collar has sentimental value. Thanks!

Sunglasses found near tennis court

If you misplaced your sunglasses near the tennis court near Irving Park and Recreation Drive, I might have found them. I found these glasses 9/15/14 and posted it on craigslist lost & found the next day. No luck so I'm trying on here (sorry for delay, should have done it concurrently.)

Please tell me what brand, the type of sunglasses (model), color, material and if it was prescription or not.

PSA-Don't hand your credit card to a taxi driver

When attempting to pay for a taxi, many of us have had the driver tell us the machine doesn't work, ask for the card, and quickly swipe it using a card reader, like the Square, on their smartphone. Twice in the last six months, my wife has had that happen and then experienced credit card fraud on her account. It happened again today and I noticed that she was never e-mailed a receipt for the ride, meaning that her card was skimmed for the number. I'm just posting to make you aware that the card readers installed in the back of the cabs are probably safest - better yet use Uber or cash.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

    Thanks, L. :-(

Yup it sucks that Hailo is going bye bye, a real bummer they were so much better than Uber. And $25 cheaper for a ride to O'hare. And Uber is extremely unreliable ever since the city legislation passed. It seems like there are a lot less drivers for them now....

And Uber is extremely unreliable ever since the city legislation passed. It seems like there are a lot less drivers for them now. About a month and a half ago I had to take my SO to ORD in a huge rush after the Uber that took his fare was so stuck in traffic on the way to NOH, he would've missed his flight. :(

Your wife should file a complaint w/ the city of chicago business affairs and consumer protection. Though to be useful you would need to know the cab #. The one useful thing about Foursquare, ever, is checking in to cabs so you always know what cab # you were in.

I'm not sure why she would be expecting an e-mail receipt, though? If your cab drive is using Square, ever, he's in violation of his association's terms and could be in big trouble. Also the city of chicago requires only approved credit card readers to be used, and meters updated after 2012 required them to put the rear reader in the back, so most of them are required to have it by now.

Found Keys

Hi Everyone,

I was walking out to my car on Sunday morning and found some keys in front of my car. I have no idea how they got there, but am trying to locate the owner and get them safely returned. There is a Mercedes Key Fob, key for another vehicle (maybe a Honda?), smaller key that was made at Ace Hardware, standard silver key, Walgreens Rewards Card and Binny's Rewards Card. If there are yours, please let me know.

-Daniel

  • C Ped Oriole Park homeowner

Yeah those car keys are probably a few hundred dollars so I would be very appreciative if I were the owner!

  • OH thank GOD YOU FOUND MY KEYSS!!!!!1!, just give em back..

Melanthios Closed

Melanthios Greek Char House Greek Restaurant went out of business recently. I always enjoyed going there and I'm sad it's no more. Anyone know why it closed?

  • I agree with BeeBee. That lamb chop was delicious (and also agree that it was pricey and small). The first place my kids had lamb, were reluctant to try it, then found it to be mouth watering. They bugged me all the time to go back there.

  • Try Athenian Room on Webster just eat of Halsted in Lincoln Park. We enjoy the Greek chicken; also have gyros and burgers. You can buy drinks next door at Glascott's.
