A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

Found Backpack

I found a backpack somebody tossed over the front fence in my home on Ashland. Possibly belonging to someone who was robbed or someone that got on an altercation early morning on Wednesday 12/17. If you are the owner, please email me for identification otherwise I will turn it to the Police Department.

Chinese Restaurant

I am looking for a good Chinese Restaurant/Take-out in the Lakeview or Roscoe Village Area. I have tried a few and nothing to make me want to go back again. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • Bob

I still miss the Abacus Chinese Restaurant that was at Clark and Deming for decades! Their eggroll was incomparable to anything anywhere. I am still grieving.

  • ....and now I need to have Young's hot & sour soup for lunch. :-)
Young's is much nicer inside than the sign would indicate, btw - great for in-house diming, too!

Police Activity at 555 Cornelia Ave

Hey guys! I've been trolling the internet and EveryBlock trying to figure out what the heck happened but at about 5am on 12/4 (thursday morning) I walked out of my place and there were GOBS of police vehicles pointed in every which direction on Cornelia and Pine grove at that T in the road and had the street blocked off for like 6 hours. Seemed like there was a body on the ground beneath the balconies but I never heard any sirens or ambulances.... any one know what happened?

  • Rylee ChiDoc

So sad :( and no the scaffolding has been there for quite some time.... Maybe 5 months? However, I hadn't really seen anyone working on the windows until after this happened.

  • G.

How awful! I wonder if a window gave out and he fell? Keep us updated on any developments.

Locked Out Neighbor Scam

Just had someone ring my doorbell, then jiggle my doorhandle, and when I answered (a minute later) he was on his way down my steps, but started into a short shpeel about being my neighbor from across the street and being locked out. I was standoff-ish, so he scurried off, but the while thing was so strange that I called the police to do a driveby. Afterward I did a quick Google search which led me to another post on...

Afterward I did a quick Google search which led me to another post on their site from the North Center neighborhood.

So this guy's definitely a scammer. Just search this site for "neighbor in distress" and read the posts. Wanted to start a new post here since it appears the scammer is now starting to target the Lakeview neighborhood.

From the other posts, it appears the guy is after a few bucks, but who knows when that starts to escalate.

Guy was white, about 6', short hair, medium-light brown, maybe 50 years old. Wore a black leather jacket.

Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

Yes, by the mere mention of saving small businesses, it happens! If you say it enough, of course it becomes the truth. As the old adage goes: "The one-eyed man is king among the blind".

Tree on Waveland and LSD

12/15/14 This early morning i woke up and saw this. I'm not an expert but the tree seemed fine. Also I have been living across the street for 7 years and I've never seen anybody try to cure the tree, if it was taken down for a tree disease. I'd rreally like to know what happened. Who should I ask?

  • fab

To dse, what do you mean you felt unsafe? Do you have something to share about the story of this tree? As I said I lived 7 years in front of that tree. It wasn't dead, it didn't lose more branches than the other trees around during the violent wind storms. No attempt to cure it so i say the cutting has been random.

  • dse

Just last month, a y=shaped "branch" about 5 feet long was hanging like an inverted wishbone, caught in the tree but precariously. this summer it had sparse leaves to the point of appearing dead. i'm not qualified to offer anything but a layperson's opinion, of course. perhaps it could have been saved, but it was dead looking and dry enough that we avoided it.

Found white and tan cat

I found a short haired, white and tan cat matching that description yesterday on the 1300 block of Wellington. It was super friendly and followed me home. Clearly someone's pet because he is very well fed. I took him to Urban Vet immediately and there's no chip. I've posted online and put up signs. He's in our living room and sweet as can be.

Photo here: http://imgur.com/BFsEpt8

  • Thanks! Based on pics this is not Chester or Felix, unfortunately. I've posted on Craigslist, Lost pets of Chicago, now Lost Cats of IL with a better picture. Also Reddit, Lost Pets USA and some signs on our street and at the vet. We're guessing this is an older male, with front claws. Crossing our fingers for a connection!

  • Connected with his family! Happy ending!

He and the other taller guy, both in trech coats, were going around the block on foot Sun night about 9-10pm (Barry -kemore-Belmont-fletcher)and dissapeared just south of belmont on fletcher.
If you were a victim of the crime I suggest asking security at Illinois Masonic if they know the guy. -Might be transport, tech or maintenance. If he is the perp doing the crime he'll be easily id'd.
-the problem is getting the police there fast

  • I have lived in my neighborhood for most of the last 23 years, and other than my close neighbors, I couldn't tell you who "belongs" here and who does not (if we're going solely by looks and not actions). And there are fewer people (more SF homes) around here than Belmont & Seminary. I find it more than a little hard to believe that you know everyone in the neighborhood.

And they want to discredit the police.

Lost cat - $1,000 reward

My cat, Mila, has been missing for three months. She was last seen in Lakeview near Lakewood and Diversey. We have set up a Web page for her, which includes a downloadable poster, a photo gallery and information on the look-alike cats in the neighborhood: http://danielleg.com/mila. REWARD: $1,000

  • I was just driving west down the alley (from Southport) between Oakdale and George and a cat with similar markings to Mila darted in front of my car and into the heavy brush/bushes in the southwest corner of the parking lot located on the corner of Oakdale and Southport (the old ZDE). I cannot be sure that it was Mila but figured it best to pass along the information.

  • Thanks. I will head over there now.

As a volunteer at the Chicago ACC, I spend a lot of time with shelter animals who fight to keep hope every day they are there. Some will be lucky enough to leave the shelter and go on to live long, happy lives. However, the unfortunate truth is that many of the animals will never leave. I make it my duty to ensure a comfortable and happy life while they are at the CACC.

My goal is to make their holiday season extra special.

I am collecting donations for both cats and dogs. NEW and USED are OK!

•Blankets
•Beds
•Toys (Kong toys are VERY popular)
•Treats
•Food
•Any other sort of present you can spare to bring joy to the poor shelter animals.

I will happily and thankfully be accepting donations for the animals. Please email me through my EveryBlock profile for information on drop off or pick up of items. Also, feel free to drop off any items at the shelter located at 2741 S. Western Ave, Chicago (12pm-7pm). Thank you very much!

  • Hi Lindsay, I went to Petco and bought a bunch of toys and treats for the dogs and cats at CACC. I emailed you on EB but haven't heard back from you. Please email me back so we can coordinate getting this to you as soon as possible for the holidays. Thank you.

Lincoln/Lakewood/George

Muskies and the dry cleaners next door have been out of business since October. Does anyone know what the latest scoop is on development here? What's going up? When?

  • L

I haven't heard anything. What's weird is that Muskies just renewed their business license.

  • Eblock10 Lakeview Resident

Oh, well I heard they would be opening up at another location this Spring

  • Another weird thing is that the bar stools are still there and there's a 5 gallon bucket of primer on the counter. The previous wordd was that the property owner wanted to do something different with the lot, but who applies primer before demolition? Maybe the owner had a change of mind?

Alley Address?

I remember reading something about the city requesting unit owners to put addresses on their garages in the alley. Is this a rule? Is this just a request from the city or streets and san? Let me know!

helicopter over Lakeview east

Anyone know what its about?

  • Stephen Boisvert Lakeview pedestrian

Also curious. My wife just came back from a run and said police had part of North Sheridan blocked off. Oakdale or Wellington (possibly) to Barry. I thought it was construction lifting but the copter looked like an emergency helicopter.

  • Ryan C. 15+ year Lakeview East resident

When I drove to work this morning, there were flatbed trucks parked along Sheridan at Surf. They were loaded with what appeared to be large external wall panels for the new St. Joseph's Hospital building. I suspect the helicopters are either hoisting the panels into place, or observing the cranes which are hoisting the panels.

  • ab lake shore & barry

The helicopter was picking up large, variously-shaped objects from the roof of the Hallmark building and offloading them lower down to the north of that building. They appeared to be construction materials and were hooked to a cable suspended from the helicopter. It was very efficient; each load was hooked to the cable in just a few seconds
