Work on Broadway and Melrose

Does anyone know that they are putting up on the corner of Broadway and Melrose?

There have been 3 huge, wooden poles in front of Nettelhorst for a couple of days, and now there is a crew out there. When I asked if it was a light of some sort, I was mumbled at and then ignored. The school doesn't know anything.

This Just Burns Me!!

Last week I went to the 44th Ward alderman "meet and greet." All three candidates had 15 minutes to speak, and all answered the same 5 questions. Tom Tunney kept repeating "crime is down, crime is down" so often I thought his mantra would cause him to levitate, then I saw this article and I'm just enraged!

http://www.cwbchicago.com/2015/01/a-matter-of-trust-police-department.html

I know a lot of the crime happens later when victims have had too many cocktails, but do you feel safe walking home from a neighborhood dinner? I'm begining not too.

  • Let's not forget that a large portion of Pewar's ward falls within the 019th District. Around Lakeview Highschool there has been an increase in gang grafitti. As for police manpower the number is even less. When an officer is detailed to a specialized unit, the district shows them on their roster for months sometimes years.

Tunney spouted "density to keep our neighborhood safer" that evening and all I kept thinking was the horror that south Halsted Street has become, and even Taylor Street for that matter. I don't want my neighborhood to look like Naperville. I want small business, I want unique places. I don't want cookie cutter stores and chains. Tunney has not convinced me that he cares about any small business except his own. Over 70% of the residents voted against the WalMart and he voted for it. THAT does not convince me he cares what we have to say.

Diversey / Clark / Broadway Related Issues

I invite you to use this post to raise and discuss issues related to or near the Lincoln Park / Lakeview intersection of Diversey, Clark, and Broadway.

New issues include four proposed developments including three residential high-rises and one hotel on the 500 and 600 blocks of Diversey.

Current and previous Everyblock posts have included issues related to vacant storefronts, problems with Panera Cares, and crime and vagrancy on Diversey and Clark. Some of these issues received previous attention and can be searched on Everyblock.

For readability, I will post links to the individual projects below.

Neighborhoods are Chicago’s greatest strength; and you are the strength of this neighborhood! Please stay involved.

Thank you.

A level of density that makes parking a car in a given area a constant nightmare and driving a car in an area a time consuming and frightening nightmare is what solves the problem of "why don't people get rid of their cars and rely on alternate modes of transit." The population density in NYC is an example of this. It's not that people in NYC like using the MTA instead of cars; it's that using a car in NYC is so much more difficult, time consuming, and fantastically expensive that even with the constant delays, service changes, and overcrowding the MTA is still a better option.

So if you want there to be fewer cars in the neighborhood, density is the way forward.

    Stephen,

    I understand your concern.

In 2011, my wife was hit by a car while she crossed Clark St. to what is now the Edge Grill at Schubert. She crossed in the center of the well marked crosswalk and was hit by a car turning north from Schubert after leaving Best Buy. We are thankful the driver stopped and waited for the police and ambulance. His passenger offered help and sat with my wife.

My wife suffered a broken jaw [resulting in a liquid-only diet for 12 weeks], tooth loss, foot problems, and other damage. Her face was so black and blue that she looked like an eggplant. The jaw has healed but more than three years later, the tooth issues continue. We must have made 40 trips to the dentist and we still haven’t gotten to the implant stage.

This was our only incident with a car.

But we’ve almost been run over countless times by adult bicyclists who ignore red lights, crosswalks, or ride on the sidewalks at or near Diversey, Clark, and Broadway.

And we should all be reminded of the woman on the sidewalk at Diversey and Sheffield who was killed by a person on rollerblades.

Pay attention when crossing the street. Look for cars, bikes, skateboards, and rollerblades. Cross with the light but still watch for cars. Put the phone away. Don’t talk when crossing the street. Sometimes it just takes 100% concentration to cross a street safely.

New Restaurant?

I just walked by the Town Hall apartments on Halsted and Addison and noticed what appears to be a new restaurant getting ready to open up in one of the retail spots for that building. Does anyone know if this is actually a new restaurant and if so what the scoop on it is, or is it perhaps some facility that is there for the tenants of the building? It seems to look like to me it may be a restaurant because it also has bar seating and the decor of the place as well.

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Hi! That facility is part of the Center on Halsted's new Senior Center complex. That space will be used to serve senior lunches or for other senior events. The lunch program is administered as part of the City of Chicago's Golden Diner senior lunch program. The old police station itself will soon be open as part of the Senior Center, it's going to be very nice!

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Addenda: the Senior Lunch program at Town Hall is not just for building residents, it is for all neighborhood seniors 60 and up. There is another Senior Lunch served at the Presbyterian church down the street, at Addison and Broadway.

This is America! This is the land of free will. Where there is a will there is a way.

I have a friend who came to Chicago for Dental School. He found an apartment for him and his wife within a quarter mile of Diversey, Clark, and Broadway. He volunteered to be the onsite building manager in exchange for free rent.

I had a student from Albania who was married and with one kid. This young woman wanted her daughter to go to an excellent elementary school near downtown. They had very little money. After asking me how to determine the best public elementary schools, I then explained how to determine their enrollment boundaries.

The bottom line: The husband looked for and found a job as building superintendent with free rent within the enrollment boundary for Ogden Elementary!

And then there is the story of Kyle MacDonald. He started with a single small red paperclip and traded it for a house. He bartered his way from a single red paperclip to a house in a series of fourteen online trades over the course of a year. It’s a real story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_red_paperclip

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Manhattan NYC is equivalent to our downtown. The rents in Manhattan and now Brooklyn have gotten so high that the average working person can't afford it. So the average working person moves to the outter outter boroughs and eventually leave the state.
Remember -- 75% of the folks working downtown commute. That should tell you something about the affordability of the city. If someone is willing to put up with Metra madness in the morning to get to&from work.
Chicago isn't as bad as SanFran or NYC, but I would hate that it would become that way.
I've had to move 3-4 times in the past 20 years always chasing "better" rents.

Like those small mom& pop stores I guess.

The thumbs up and thumbs down are partisan opinion and no doubt this is a teacher's union website. Totally useless unless you are a public union supporter, which I am not. This actually makes me like Tunney.

  • The facts there are probably accurate, on how they voted, but as KTL notes, the thumbs up/down is whether "Grassroots Illinois Action" (whomever they are) think it was a good vote. They're against charter schools, yet clearly, charter schools markedly outperform traditional schools by any measure (except "preservation of highly-paid union jobs for bad teachers", maybe).

Homeless Man Sleeping in Apt. Lobby

I was leaving for work this morning and there was someone sleeping in the opening door area of my apartment complex. So the area right before you could be buzzed in to the actual complex. He could easily follow in behind someone living there and be walking throughout the complex. Being a girl living alone in the city, I don't want to call the cops but this makes me super uncomfortable. Not sure the protocol on asking a homeless man to leave your apartment building...

  • Call your management company too.

  • The same thing kept happening at my old apartment (5300 N Sheridan) and its a big part of the reason we moved. We told the management company several times, but nothing was ever really done. I recommend calling the police next time and also letting your management company know too.

Possible injured Cat (Sunny) Barry/Lakewood/ Nelson/ Racine

We're searching for one of our feral cats that is possibly injured in the neighborhood. He was last seen on Barry, west of Racine, and evaded our attempt to capture him. He's a medium sized gray cat with his winter coat, so he's quite furry. He's more skittish than friendly, as he a member of our working cat community hosted at 1232 Nelson. Please post any sightings to this thread as we're concerned for his wellbeing.
I also apologize if we caused any concern with flash lights shining in yards and side through ways. Thank you for your concerns - Tim

With the recent stick-ups in Lakeview and Lincoln Park, a police rep said in a radio interview that women shouldn't carry their credit cards in their purse. I kept wondering, where should the credit cards be carried?

When the snow gets packed down the alley becomes two ruts where wheels run with a ridge in the middle where cars' undercarriages have leveled and compacted the snow. Last year this froze like a rock and couldn't be moved, even with an ice chopper.
Tonight I had to help a neighbor who had got stuck trying to leave his garage and cross the ruts and the ridge. I'm way too old for this kind of stunt.
What we need is a snowplow to break up the ridge and clear the alley. Does anyone know someone who has a Jeep or truck with a snowplow who we could hire to plow the alley? I'm hoping some of my neighbors would chip in to help pay for this.
It's obnoxious to have to worry every time I leave or return to my garage. Thanks for your help.

Except for a story I heard about this on NPR it is a new concept to me but sounds like a great idea and maybe something that could work in Uptown with the right neighbors on board..

Every "hacker space" develops its own character and culture,it would be interesting to see what ours would look like in Uptown, we have some talented and creative people with all sorts of skills for sure.

Here is a link to the EveryBlock post which inspired this post:

http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/sep16-does-ravenswood-need-a-hacker-space-4265613/#comment-68582

And here is a link to a hacker space on Elston Av. that is up and running:

http://pumpingstationone.org/

The name "hacker space" can be a bit misleading at first sight, at least it was for me as its something I associated with nefarious cyber behaviors. Thankfully it is not.

So please have a look and share any comments and/or ideas about bringing this idea to Uptown.

I cant speak for the other stations. I dont think we are. We dont have access to the legal tools to find out what people are really concerned about. Mainly if the owner of the building is the owner and installer of the recording equipment. And if the owner of the building has anymore recording equipment in use in any illegal way. That would require warrants for search. Police have to do their due diligence and burn some good old fashion shoe leather.

Traffic light coming to Clark and School?

I drove through N. Clark and W. School tonight.

There's a new traffic light and pole there. It's not operating.

Anyone have any additional details?

I've driven through this intersection countless times. I noticed drivers don't always stop and go and yield in the correct order with other drivers who have been waiting. I figured it had something to do with the two streets not intersecting at a perfect 90 degrees. Somehow it is distracts or confuses us.

But, I never considered it enough of an issue to install a light.

Have there been a high number of accidents there? Or is this something to help with Wrigley Field traffic?

  • @CHP025

Change Coming to 44th Ward?

...maybe, maybe not, it will be for the voters to decide. But for the first time in several election cycles there are challengers to the incumbent in next month's election for 44th Ward Alderman. Come learn about the candidates and ask questions next week:

1. Monday, January 19 at 7pm at the next Southport Neighbors Association meeting. It will be at the Mercury Theater.
http://www.southportneighbors.com/meeting.html

2. Wednesday, January 21 at 6pm at the Hawthorne Neighbors Meeting. It will be at the Annoyance Theater
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hawthorne-Neighbors/589776931051310

Here's a chance to find out where the candidates stand on issues important to the community and ask questions.

  • Robert Rohdenburg Affordable Housing Activist for ONE Northside

A Google search of news stories on "Tunney" and "election" or "re-election" found no stories which mentioned him contemplating, thinking about, considering, or deciding on not running for re-election. Even if he though about it, I doubt that he would say it to a reporter. After Mayor Daley decided non-to run for re-election, their was story mention about a possible Tunney bid for election as Mayor of Chicago. If he had decided to run for mayor, he could campaign while still being 44th Ward Alderman.

  • Robert Rohdenburg Affordable Housing Activist for ONE Northside

There is a possibility that the "The Alderman was not invited to the forum" was a cover story for being busy doing something else that his chief of staff did not want to specify, but the appropriate and acceptable answer then would have been "The Alderman had a prior commitment that he couldn't break or change."

Windshield wiper blades stolen overnight

To my surprise, as I turned on my windshield wipers this morning to clean off the salty, dirty muck on my windshield, I was greeted by the scratching of the metal blade holders against my car. Apparently, someone stole the blades off of both of my wipers overnight. Not sure if this is some sort of bad joke or gang initiation, but wanted to get the word out.

Anyone else have this happen lately?
