Experiences with apartment searching in early spring/late winter?

Hello Everyone!

I am looking for people who have had experiences with searching for apartments with April 1st least start dates. Our current lease ends at the end of September, but our landlord made us an offer to extend our lease to the end of March. I have tried searching the web for information regarding what the rental market looks like during that time, but haven't really found anything.

We know that the October 1st lease starting time is one of the busiest and most fast paced rental seasons, but we may not be able to invest the time in August and September that is needed to snap up a nice apartment so we are seriously considering the April start date alternative.

So I am asking if any of you have any experience with the April start date rental market. Do there tend to be a decent amount of properties available in a variety of neighborhoods? Do the prices fluctuate at all? Is it silly to think that the market at that time won't be as ideal?

Any and all information or anecdotes you could send our way would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • Thank you all for the information. It really helps a lot!

I've gotten a ton of people come by but they expect too much; free utilities, cable and parking in my garage. But I'm very picky on potential renters also.

My house is huge (I live in the duplex upstairs) and some think they can still bring in pets (No Pets!)

    here's some pointers;
    a. are you prepared to move (first months rent + security, knowing you may not get your sec. from your current LL for 30 days)?
    b. do you want to move? you can still look, you don't have to commit - this gives you an idea on neighborhood and conveniences.
    c. what's out there (apts) that is of more interest than where you're at now?
    d. (and most important) will your credit check out?

Happy hunting and good luck - I was a happy renter until 2010; what a great time to buy that was!

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

I came home to find my kitty unresponsive and barely breathing. I put her in my arms and rushed to the first place I could think of, giving CPR over her mouth at stop lights, and drove to Cat Hospital on Irving Park. They took her in immediately, were compassionate and excellent emergency care. She was almost 19 years old and she has been with us ever since we picked her up at an apple farm in Michigan. I was able to contact my son in Australia so he could say his goodbyes and nurses were supportive during the transition time that followed as our wonderful cat passed on. I had taken her there only one other time many years ago but they treated her with kindness and quick response. My regular vet is a traveling vet and comes to the house and always spent a good hour when we had her check-ups, shots, or anything else. He rents space if surgery is needed. That's why I needed to go somewhere immediately and Cat Hospital was there for us. Our kitty gave us so much joy and fun times. We miss her so.

Panera Bread at Ashland and School Falls Through; Target Development Not Happening

According to the latest flyers from Cushman &Wakefield, Panera Bread is no longer coming to Ashland and School and they are re-releasing it to market. Vitamin Shoppe is a go, and Target is no longer pictured on the map.

Before I undertook my studies, Alpana directed me to The Court of Master Sommeliers (www.mastersommeliers.org), who offer a syllabus of recommended literature and three levels of testing, if that interests you. If you're looking for something more fun and casual, I can always help. If you want to study wine a bit and have fun doing it, check my website out to see if it appeals to you (www.thegrapesimple.com). That way, you can invite friends over, enjoy a few beverages, and get some instruction while doing it. Otherwise, The Chopping Block is good. Good luck, and have fun!

  • Check out Joe's Wine Cellar on Division, they are starting up some beginner classes. http://www.joeswinecellar.com/events/wine-101-class/?month=7&year=2014&categoryID=&relatedID=

The Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the launch of their pop-up public gathering space and art piece, People Spots, available now through October at 2863 and 2914 N. Clark St. Two sites on the east and west side of the street host two unique People Spots, each containing fixed seating areas of various styles, bistro tables, chairs and strong public WiFi signals. For more information on the People Spots and campaign in general, please visit www.LakeviewEast.com.

In 2013, the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce and Special Service Area #8 (SSA #8) launched the Clark Street Task Force, a community-driven strategic planning process to develop concepts for the improvement of the Clark Street Corridor. Residents, business owners, and property owners were surveyed with a top priority being an increase in the amount of nearby pedestrian gathering space through People Spots. Participants viewed People Spots as a way of activating a welcoming public space in the corridor without the attendant costs and disruption of traditional construction.

The two unique, 6 ft. x 40 ft. installations are designed separately by Katherine Darnstadt of Latent Design and Duane Sohl of Sohl. Architect with Gary DeStefano of DCR Builders, LLC. Both were chosen from a request-for-proposal process, with each satisfying the desire for increased public gathering and green space. The green space for each People Spot is installed by Patch Landscaping. Patch also creates and maintains the hanging baskets and planters throughout Lakeview East as well as the “urban oasis garden” located within the annual Lakeview East Festival of the Arts (September 13 and 14, 2014).

Though a comprehensive rethinking of the corridor is well underway based on feedback from the strategic planning process, the People Spots provide immediate place-making benefits for those who live, work, dine, and shop nearby.

Homemade Pizza Company closed all locations

RIP #HomemadePizzaCo. Looks like all locations are closed, and their Facebook and Twitter are deleted. This is an L3 building so we'll see what happens next.

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2014/05/rip-homemade-pizza-company.html

  • Matt 10-year Lakeview resident

They must have left some food behind because the Southport storefront is now littered with dead flies...such an eyesore, creeps me out each time I walk past it on my commute. Shocked that the chain closed, they must have overexpanded--this location had a line of customers every evening.

  • Personally, I never understood the business model. I bought pizzas from them twice and stopped after I realized I could get a pizza made, and delivered to me for the same price as this place. Did I mention that the delivered pizza was already made? I didn't have to cook it myself.

I found them to be overpriced for what they were offering.
