New Streetlights

Just installed on Greenview. I think they chose a fixture that allows too much light and glare to be undirected and so spills horizontal (Everyone's windows and eyes). Rather they should have chosen a lamp that directs the light to the ground. Also I am praying that they will paint the bright shining aluminum. The City has made so many good choices in the past regarding public fixtures. Retro and period street lamps painted monochromatic dark greens. Someone blew this one.)

  • DougB 47th Ward Curmudgeon

Ugh. I hear you. I am around the corner on Byron. They dug up a spot right in front of my house, where there was no streetlight, and they're putting one in. It's going to shine full on into my windows. I hate to complain about getting new streetlights, but what was wrong with old ones? why do I get the feeling some politician thinks this makes them look good? Besides these particular lights look like they belong in a retail area, not a quiet sidestreet.

  • I'm sorry for both of you. I have the new style streetlight directly outside my bedroom window. It's brighter than daylight when the streetlight is on. You will adjust over time. I won't lie - I absolutely hate it. The installation of the light totally altered my sleep. The only solution for me is blackout curtains. Buy some. You'll need them.

Help preserve the monarchs

Help sustain the dwindling monarch butterfly population by planting a few milkweed seeds in your garden or in any open ground near you (e.g., vacant lots, along the train tracks, in community gardens). I will place a box of seed pods on my parkway garden at 1231 W. Addison, so help yourself to a few seeds. The large seed pods are for the common milkweed that gets about 3 feet tall and has fragrant pink flowers, while the small dark pods are from butterfly weed, another type of milkweed that has orange flowers and gets about 2 feet tall.
Conservationists are calling for a nationwide campaign to save the monarch--you can be a part of this effort. It's a great project for kids, too. Read more at http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-monarch-butterfly-herbicide-kennedy-perspec-102-20141021-story.html

Deciphering gang graffiti

On my morning walk I noticed a lot of stickers around Belmont Harbor containing an X and the letters S H I T in each of the four quadrants. Some were more elaborate and some were very simple. Most seem to be located near other graffiti. In one case, the sticker contained the dates Oct. 23, Oct. 24, Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Anyone have any insights? (And yes, I reported the graffiti to the city.)

There seems to be a URL on some of the stickers, but I'd rather not get my computer infected with a virus. Google didn't turn up anything useful. The photographs were taken in the Roscoe underpass, but I also noticed a lot of the stickers toward the south end of the harbor.

Excel 2013 class - free or paid. Recommendations?

I'm looking for someplace in Chicago, between Lakeview and downtown, to learn about Excel 2013. I want a live instructor, not a virtual one. I've looked and found several paid options. I fully expect to pay but would like a recommendation if anyone has one. Thank you.

The Center on Halsted offers classes.

  • @ Gregory - Thank you very much for posting. Looks like I just missed the Excel classes for this season but I imagine there will be another set next year.

There's a large display of what looks like whisky barrels - almost from the prohibition era. Makes me wonder if they are re-concepting to be another whiskey bar (or something similar). Again, this is just a random guess.

Separately, my partner said the Boystown feed on Facebook had an article a couple days ago reporting the owner of Bonsai was arrested for arson related to his former bar. The post on FB has since been taken down. I have NO idea if this story has any merit (altho I know that his former bar DID burn down and there was a suspicion of arson - but that was two years ago).

The fire occurred in 2012 but he was not arrested until Nov of 2013. I saw the same FB posting and wondered why someone was posting old news.

Advice on Sealing Split-Faced Block

Hi neighbors - For those who live in a condo with split-faced block, any advice or lessons you can share on having it treated to protect against moisture? I'm on the board for a 6-unit condo with split-faced block on two sides of the building. We last had it treated in 2010, and I'm calling some contractors for quotes to get it done again in the spring. That said, I wanted to do a little research beforehand. Any information you can share on local contractors, types of sealing products, or things to ask about or watch out for would be much appreciated!

  • Thank you all for your referrals and insights on sealing products - I greatly appreciate it! I've called a few contractors for quotes and plan to get this done when the weather is dry enough in the spring. Thanks, again!

Where to donate mini toiletries

Does anyone know where I can donate mini toiletries? I have so many from hotel stays/birthday gifts/holiday gifts - and I really just don't use them. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can give these away?

  • Also best not to donate mini-mouthwashes as many contain alcohol and are not accepted by organizations anyhow.

  • so many great causes and such a great idea! i have hundreds of these from years of business travel, and it's clear that i will never use them. i'm going to drop off today!

Peoples Gas, what's going on?

For the third time this year, Peoples Gas has been working on the 3600 block of North Ashland Avenue. Just one month after the street had been smoothly repaved they came back and started ripping it apart all over again. Now we have five metal plates that rattle the homes along the way and the noise doesn't allow for a good night sleep. They have extended the "No Parking" ban all along the block for yet another week but nobody shows up to work even on sunny days. I am afraid the constant shaking is going to take a toll on the homes in the area. Does anybody know how to go about reporting this?

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

Peoples infrastructure is the same as most in this country. Water mains, sewers and bridges are all crumbling and in need of updating. There are a lot of things that should have been replaced 50 years ago.

  • C'mon it's Peoples and the City of Chicago, two of the most inept and inefficient entities on earth, and you want sense, efficiency and coordination?

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • I agree, Liz. I think 20 is reasonable, but they need to be more clear about the times. Like others have mentioned. I go 20 whenever I pass there now. I don't want to end up arguing in court that I didn't see any students. That would be hard to prove. I've lived places where the school speed limit is 15, but they always made it clear with additional signage.

  • I just drove on Addison around 10am. Saw the white strobe light. I saw my speed limit. It was 24-25. I didn't see any students on street or sidewalk. This should prevent me getting a ticket as you need to be 6mph and above. But who knows. I still think...

Here's what I found on Chicago website: (How does the camera differentiate pedestrians from children?) Emphasis mine.

School Zones: School days, Monday through Friday

7 a.m. to 4 p.m.: 20 mph speed limit when *children* are present in the *safety zone* and 30 mph when no children are present in the safety zone

    4 p.m. to 7 p.m.: 30 mph speed limit

Woman Attacked at 3300 Block of Sheffield

This morning there were police officers outside my home investigating the attack of a woman which happened at approximately 5:00am in the west alley of the 3300 block of Sheffield (between Roscoe and School). The woman was walking to her car and was attacked in or directly outside her garage. Fortunately someone heard her screams and called 911 and the attacker was caught. The police officer said she is in critical condition at a hospital. I don't know whether the attacker knew the victim or it was a random act of violence.

@sarah (and all 44th ward residents) - Robin Cook is running for Alderman of the 44th Ward and personally, I think he's an excellent candidate and would be a welcome change for the better. He acknowledges there is a crime and police staffing problem here and has pledged to help try to make things better. That alone is a heck of a lot more than the incumbent has done/will do. I find the rest of his platform and his stance on important issues to be good as well. You can check his platform out on his website.

He has a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AldRobinCook) and a website (robincook44th.com). I don't work for him or his campaign, but I've been a resident here since 2010 and I know Tunney needs to go, and I think this is the man to help make real changes for us. I saw in my FB feed that he'll be at Argo Tea tonight from 6.30 - 8pm, if you want to meet him. I've met him previously and been very impressed.

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.
