What's going on in Boystown?

I've lived in Boystown for two years now, and in the last few months I feel like the strip of Halsted between Roscoe and Clark has gotten… questionable. In the last week and a half alone:

3. Walking home with my boyfriend, 8 pm. Man jumps in our face yelling that we're gross, both of us. (I can assure you, we're not).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

Peoples Gas

Does anyone else have a story about Peoples Gas? I have been waiting to have my gas turned on for two weeks now - the schedule is booked out 10 days to two weeks. The day of my appointment I called 3 times to confirm as no one ever showed up. Each time I was ASSURED that the tech was on their way. The next day-again I called at 7 a. m. and was told that because they didn't get to me yesterday - for sure I would be at the top of the list- but they could't give me a time and I would have to skip work and wait the entire day. Each time I called they had a different answer - from "they on on the way" to "we don't see you on the schedule" and "you are scheduled for tomorrow". I spoke to an "escalation supervisor" four times and the call center 7 times . Each time I called the hold time was 20 to 50 minutes of listening to music. Still another day passed and again no show. I even saw a peoples gas truck pass my house looking for a parking spot., It seems when they could fine one they decided to just leave. I am not sure what I'm going to do to these people if they ever show up!!!!

Stop calling, start emailing - I had a terrible experience with their phone bank but their email customer service reps are way more helpful. Cusserv@peoplesgasdelivery.com. You can even state that in their next visit to you, they need to shorten to a two hour window and waive your installation fee for all the drama they've caused this week.

People's Gas has always been and always will be a complete nightmare. It astonishes me how city's let these monopolys run the show!
Anyway, I agree with Rachel, start emailing and getting a paper trail. Get names if you can, confirmation numbers, anything. Then be the squeaky wheel.

Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

  • they are reopening in another location in Lakeview

  • I remember the cheese fries from Muskies on Belmont after going to Medusas, the teen nightclub in the late 80s-early 90s. Who remembers Medusa's on Sheffield from back in the day?

As you may know, there has been a series of suspicious fires in Wrigleyville and Boystown, reaching back to mid-June. There has been an increase in this activity over the past three weeks.

These fires have generally been set between 11:30PM and 5:30AM.

Last night, two fires were set in the east alley of Clark near Roscoe/Clark and Buckingham/Clark shortly after 2AM. Today's fires, like most in this pattern, were set in a garbage can and a dumpster.

In both cases, the fires appear to have been set next to or under occupied structures. While this morning's fires did not spread to the structures, previous fires have spread from garbage ignition points to adjacent structures and vehicles.

We recommend locking the lids on your trash cans and dumpsters if at all possible and do not allow boxes, mattresses, crates, or other flammable items to collect behind your home.

The Chicago Police Department recently issued an alert on this matter.

This map plots known "fires of suspicious origins" in the neighborhood reported since mid-June. There has been some indication that the fire at Clark and Eddy (top left icon) may have been due to vehicle malfunction, but we have not received that information from official sources.

Chris Martinez is a general assignment reporter for CBS 2...

CHICAGO (CBS) – Residents of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood are feeling on edge after a number of arsons there.

There have been at least a half dozen fires set, most of them in alleys next to homes in the neighborhood.

CBS 2’s Chris Martinez reports Tomlinson Fort got the news with a knock at his back door.

“They said ‘hey your garbage cans on fire.’” Fort said. the blue plastic had completely melted and there was charred paper inside. It didn’t occur to me that there was somebody willfully committing crimes, until a few days later,” Fort said.

That’s when he noticed the damage a few doors down. The garage hit days before is one of at least a half dozen fires set in or near the neighborhood in a matter of weeks.

“Having that happen right next to your place can be pretty nerve wracking,” said Lakeview resident Sam Henderson.

The arsons have residents asking who is starting the fires?

“If this is just the beginning of what they want to do, then at what point are they going to be setting those next to flammable buildings and that sort of thing,” Tomlinson said.

Alderman Tom Tunney says Chicago Police Bomb and Arson Unit are patrolling the area and urges residents to keep a look out.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Lakeview

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Lakeview think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:

Found: Kitten

Hey, I rescued a kitten that was leaping from rooftop to rooftop to balcony last night on Kenmore, north of Lawrence last night. Currently finding a vet to check for a microchip, but is anyone missing a little one? this was more in Uptown, I know, but just thought I'd post it here, in case it wandered that far.

  • While I appreciate your sentiment Ivan, but this was most definitely NOT an outdoor cat. Though she lacked a collar and chip, she refused to urinate or defecate until she was presented with a litter box. She's also refused most food except for cat food.

  • A&K

It would be nice if people stopped the outdoor cat thing. We have two that roam near us. Attack birds, scare the rabbits and one time had one think about attacking my dog during the walk. Tail poofed, hissing the whole deal.

They leave them out in the rain, rarely see them in the winter which is a plus. If you want a cat have a cat but if it's an "outdoor" cat just feed a stray and forget about it. Why bother having a cat if it's just left outside?

For the third time this year, Peoples Gas is drilling on the same spot of the 3600 north Ashland Avenue. When we finally got the street smoothly resurfaced after the first two sloppy jobs, here we go again. One guy drilling, four guys watching and our utilities going up again.

Ordinance 11-4-2830: Loading and unloading operations.
No person shall undertake or cause the loading, unloading, opening, closing or other handling of boxes, crates, containers, building, materials, garbage cans, dumpsters or similar objects between the hours of 10:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M. in such a manner as to cause a noise disturbance within a residential district or within a noise sensitive zone.

Some on the block have tried contacting the alderman and we've tried talking to the drivers.

I see from this article that this has been a recalcitrant problem elsewhere in the city.

  • I had NO idea it was a city violation to pickup before 7am. Thank you for that info!!!!!! I'm at the end of a long alley that has an entranace from Irving Park rd and the beeping and slamming of dumpsters is just ridiculous.

Puppy training classes in/near Lakeview?

My 5-month-old puppy just got her rabies and last parvo vaccine, so we're ready for puppy school! I'd love to hear local recommendations from Lakeview dog owners. My preference is a group class so she can get some better puppy socialization. Lakeview classes would be optimal, but we can drive to nearby neighborhoods if need be.

  • We took puppy classes at Barking Lot also. They were fun and helpful.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

The one we took our black lab to, I wouldn't recommend due to all the dogs barking...we couldn't hear the trainer!

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

Sadly too many people allow that to happen and we are left with a swath of misinformed people.

So far the only link source provided was someone's rant replete of factual evidence. And just because the CTA has provided factual evidence doesn't mean I'm blindly believing it at face value either. I am able to use critical thinking skills to come to my own conclusion. But don't rant and rave if that conclusion doesn't parallel your own.

  • Robert, quite right, this vote in three precincts (out of more than 2,000 in Chicago) is purely advisory, just a show. It will have no relevance to whether this project goes forward.

You're quire right, there's a LOT of infrastructure work that needs to be done in this city, both maintaining existing structures, as well as building and improving new ones.

The CTA publishes ridership data back to 2001, anyone want to use it to try to produce more correct numbers? (I found this just now via Google.)
