The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

Robert, the tracks still have to cross somewhere. The only way to avoid a crossing is to have one set go up and over (or under) the other set. Going under, down to street level, would result in permanently closing quite a few streets.

Longer trains would require extending the existing 8-car platforms at every single station on the line. They just completed extending the brown line platforms so they could expand from 6-car trains to 8-car trains as part of the brown line modernization recently completed. Extending those platforms would typically require knocking down 2-4 buildings at every station.

Adding more trains would result in even more delays at the red/purple/brown intersection, of course.

Once construction of the flyover is done, all the properties removed for construction (like near the Belmont station) would be sold to developers, and it's a hot area, they WILL sell and be developed. There will be parking under the El too, of course, as always.

Renters tend to move every year or two anyway, and they'll get moving assistance.

Yes, people should allow time to get where they're going, but when delays go up, people get mad and stop taking the CTA. Simply being patient and not worrying about delays is not a solution; these delays are within the CTA's control (unilke suspicious packages or medical issues).

The whole point is to allow the CTA to provide better and more reliable service, so people WILL use the CTA. Other transit systems are much more predictable and reliable. Those delays due to congestion represent lost productivity and do have an economic impact. Look at all those studies every year reporting how much time people waste commuting, whether by car or public transit. Having a lower commute time makes Chicago a more desirable place to live.

Federal money is indeed a factor, but I don't think the president gets involved in contract awards to individual projects. New York City, California, Florida, and Michigan are all getting a lot of money to build and grow public transit and rail systems as well. There's no need to try to drag this into politics.

There's simply no way to cross tracks without blocking each other, but to build one up higher and over the other one.

Potential time saved: Let's say it's just 30 seconds per commuter going through this crossing (but likely more). But multiply that by 150,000 customers a day, 365 days a year, for the next century. That's 5,208 manyears of lost working time, which we could value at $50K/year (typically higher-paying Loop jobs), or $260 million. Pretty near the construction costs already. Now factor in that ridership demand is expected to DOUBLE by 2030 -- what do you think that will do to delays?

Why would you need an environmental impact study in an urban area? There's no endangered birds or fish at risk here.

Garage Break in on Melrose

Garage break in last night on 1500 Block. They entered from the yard side of the garage (!!), by slashing the window screen and opening the window. Seems it must have been more than 1 person as the window is high to just climb through... Police report filed. We don't know if they were interrupted or decidied they didn't like the bikes - was was uncovered and taken off it's hanger, but not taken...

Bus Shelter on Broadway and Sheridan

Does anyone know what happened to the Bus shelter on the corner of Broadway and Sheridan? I drove by it this morning and the glass was shattered.

  • My guess would be a car ran into it. I've seen that happen several times at other bus shelters. Once on Division and Western I was almost hit by a car that took down the whole shelter. Be careful in those things.

  • Someone from the CTA already replaced the glass yesterday but I would also like to know what happened. I wondered if it was from the construction on Sheridan that has been going on.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • Dang, I didn't know they now took speeding violations from the front?! What are times of the reduced 20mph speed?

  • There's also one just south of Belmont/Lincoln/Ashland between the Petco and Boston Market. i just noticed the sign today. As others have mentioned, it's 20 MPH. I *think the sign said it's enforced during school hours when children are present. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. 20 MPH is SO slow. Combine the school zones with all of the the slow zones because of city parks and you'll be at a crawl on many busy thoroughfares.

I have 27 magazine holders/cases I'd like to give away, preferably to a charity. I know that I can drop them off at one of many local charities, but I'd prefer to give them to a charity that is going to use them. Do you know of one?

The Black Star Project on Sept 22, 2014, has need for wooden magazine racks.
Please follow up with Dorothy at 773.285-9600 on this fine offer for magazine holders.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

    The Admiral is very expensive

  • Resident of LP In Lincoln Park since 1980

We just moved my mother- in-law into Sunrise of Lincoln Park, at 2710 N. Clark. It is about between $5000-$6000 per month. I'm not sure what it is for a couple. It is an amazing place with a focus on memory care. It is worth checking out for your parents.
It would be nice to have them close by.

What's going on in Boystown?

I've lived in Boystown for two years now, and in the last few months I feel like the strip of Halsted between Roscoe and Clark has gotten… questionable. In the last week and a half alone:

3. Walking home with my boyfriend, 8 pm. Man jumps in our face yelling that we're gross, both of us. (I can assure you, we're not).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

I am an affordable housing activist who was evicted from the Chateau Hotel last June along with about 140 other elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, and working poor Chateau Hotel tenants. I hope that all Lakeview/Uptown area residents are noticing that the closing the Ambers SRO, The Sheffield House SRO, the Abbott SRO, The Chateau SRO, the Lawrence House SRO, the Astor House SRO, and other area SRO's in recent years has NOT reduced crime in the area or significantly improved the area, as Ald. Cappleman had expected when he targeted certain SROs for the gut-rehab/conversions into higher rent housing, now owned by BJB Properties and FLATS Chicago. Hurting low income tenants, 2,200 evicted in the last three years alone, causes more problems for others and does not eliminate the problems some residents and alderman thought would be solved with their closing. Gentrification hurts those that remain or move into the gentrified neighborhood as well as those forced out. If bad or illegal things/ happen, take a picture with your cell phone, if you can, and go to police. Those committing crimes, such as selling drugs, harassing pedestrians. trying to extort money from motorist/parkers, need to be stopped or charged. Bad and illegal behavior that is tolerated or rewarded will get worse.

nice comment, greg morrow. just lower the standards for city behavior, and voila! what we get is just what we should have expected. no thanks. given the organization you are posting from, i'd think you'd be a little more visionary/hopeful/inspiring than that. wouldn't you?

Where can I rent an empty space for short term

Where can I rent an empty space for short term? My business needs a flexspace for assembling equipment. We only need to rent it for a few days.

  • Jen K 22-year Lakeview resident

Can you give us a sense of how much space you need, how large the equipment is, etc.? Hotel meeting rooms can be rented without any furniture, but they might not be viable if you're assembling equipment that could potentially cause damage the floor or walls. What about a renting one of those garage-style storage units for a month?

Water shut off 5-9PM today

Just notified at 2:30PM by management that water is going to be off from 5-9PM tonite by City of Chicago for emergency repairs. I'm near Vic Theatre. Anyone else get this "late" notice or is management covering their you know what?

  • OMG

  • Just spoke with someone from the Alderman's office and the area affected should be Belmont & Seminary where they are connecting a waterline. Work will only take an hour or hour and a half, so shouldn't last until 9PM.

    Hope that helps!
