Township closing?

Does anyone know the full story? I heard last night that it was their last show and I've also heard the bar itself is closing. Anyone know what's up?

  • Bludog 21 years in LS

From The Reader: Owner Tamiz Haiderali says Township will continue to host concerts, though that's on pause now. "It all happened a little too sudden for everyone involved, but Township is open, it's going to stay open,"

  • Bludog 21 years in LS

Also from The Reader: We heard from Peterson (of MP Shows) shortly after publishing the story, who says that he was bought out of his half of Township last night. "My partner and I [Haiderali] have been trying to dissolve our partnership for about a year, and we were essentially negotiating to buy each other out," Peterson says.

TRIBUNE: Fate of STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK signs

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:
1. in street mounted signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK are visual cue that enhances Pedestrian Safety. Milwaukee Ave location has 25,000 vehicles/day AND is heavily used by pedestrians day & evening on City designated PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET in heart of vibrant Logan Square business district.
2. signs are intrinsically subject to wear/damage and getting plowed over by (idiot) drivers
3. CDOT/City annual budget should anticipate replacement cost for these signs, like replacement of Stop, Tow Zone, No Parking etc which come from City budget, not Alderman ward menu funds
4. Red Light and Schools/Parks cameras bring in ~$100,000,000 per yr. It's not Mayor Emanuel slush fund to plug police overtime etc. Public Safety & real leadership means: take some of that $ and pay to replace damaged signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK as needed.

The DUI KING of City Council, Alderman Rey Colon offered this comment in Tribune: "These signs are very popular with constituents who request them often," Colon said. But he said the average life of the signs "is like freshly cut flowers that wither and die."

Alderman: it's time for your political career to do the same.

  • I think those little buggers should grow by three feet, glow like a sci-fi show, and be made of METAL. That would teach people real fast to pay attention and stop running over the little neon man!

  • I dunno...Many people who hit those signs don't take care of their cars anyway, so adding some scratches to go with the speed holes and fart cans (mufflers) won't matter to them...

Sorry Jessica...there have been many scandals with nfps. Red cross, United Way, Chicago nfps are being investigated by the IRS for not using $$ as it was appropriated.

My point is to scrutinize so that one is not swept up in a feel good event and then gets stuck. Some get stuck with very sick animals and can't afford the thousands it costs to treat animals with serious illnesses.

Every nfp and every household can bleed about not having enough money; when many are just inefficient.

A nfp in my neighborhood gave a FLY DUMPER the ok to dump wood chips. They came back and dumped 150 truckloads on 5 locales totalling 50 vacant lots mostly owned by the city.

The nfp was the catalyst, like it or not. They also did not have authority to authorize an illegal fly dumper to dump wood chips on city owned land. They did NOTHING to help get these 150 truckloads of debris cleaned up off of 50 vacant lots.

For those who don't know; using wood chips and barley malt as growing materials attracts RATS.

These are unintended consequences that happen as a by product of people wanting to do good. None every come back and clean up the chips or the rats.

We have lots of battles on my block. Streets and San, Chicago Dept of Transportation, CPD, Sewer/Water....would u like to come and help with these problems? We could use some advocates.

Actually ADOPTING pets is better than being a foster donor.

And, getting the word out for people who buy pets and abandoning them quickly is a inhumane thing to do...would also round out the picture Those who acquire pets should be responsible for the animal until it passes away.

  • Jen

Adopting pets is great but fostering would actually help more animals bc you can continuously provide a place for new animals that would otherwise be killed to go to

Christmas trees??

I finally live in an apartment with very tall ceilings and am very excited to have a nice, tall Christmas tree this year. Any suggestions for where I can go in the area to buy a tree this year??

  • Used to go to Gethsemane even though it was far (it was close to my mom's and we had a tradition of buying our trees together). For the past couple of years, I've gone to Christy Weber on Grand. Trees have held their needles well.

Altgeld at Richmond. Nothing taken or other damage to the car that I know of.

  • It's so hard to get over the helpless and violated feeling when someone steals a part off your car. It's such an expensive thing to fix and most people have no choice but to use street parking and leave their car vulnerable. Myself included. Transit Oriented Development, Milwaukee/California Community Feedback

There was another thread that I started that got a little long. Thought I'd start a fresh one to house thoughts on the idea of TOD near the California El station, as the developer goes back to the drawing board to work on a revised, scaled-back plan. Here's some recent feedback from the group "Save Our Boulevards" and a link to follow offering a different view.

  • 2221 N. Milwaukee got his feedback from the GGNA:

The GGNA Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAPC) and neighbors who live near 2211 N. Milwaukee Ave met on March 10 with the project team for that address. We reviewed their request for an up zoning from C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development for...

2221 N. Milwaukee got his feedback from the GGNA:

The GGNA Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAPC) and neighbors who live near 2211 N. Milwaukee Ave met on March 10 with the project team for that address. We reviewed their request for an up zoning from C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development for a 7 story building with 135 rental units.
The plans as presented and the request for up zoning to C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development were not regarded favorably by the ZAPC for the following reasons:
1.) The seven story building is too massive and will be completely out of character and scale with the surrounding neighborhood buildings. The ZAPC recommends that the building height be no more than 5 stories with different heights along the street. Higher sections of the building should be closer to the bank and be lower closer to Talman.
2.) The additional car density was also a big concern. This project should not move forward until alley, street traffic and parking exits have been reviewed at a community meeting and changes have been approved by CDOT. This building is one block from Goethe Elementary School where there are already traffic backups and more cars going north on Talman will add to those problems. The alley behind the building will also become congested. There are also not enough parking spaces for both the retail unit(s) on the first floor and for one space per unit, which will cause more parking issues both on Milwaukee and the nearby interior streets. This project is also one block from the Congress Theater that has historically brought in 5,000 plus people, many arriving in cars for events several times a week.
3.) The size of the building will also create problems for surrounding neighbors by blocking sunlight and creating wind tunnels that will adversely affect both pedestrians and bicyclists.

  • 4.) Although a green roof is being planned for the top of the building, the developers said it will not be accessible to residents; only on the third floor. And there is no green space being planned on the street level on a pedestrian zoned street except a few trees...

4.) Although a green roof is being planned for the top of the building, the developers said it will not be accessible to residents; only on the third floor. And there is no green space being planned on the street level on a pedestrian zoned street except a few trees in the parkway. The project team also did not mention any green building standards being used in construction of this building.
5.) The project team agreed to provide 14 affordable housing units, the required 10%, in proportion to the range of apartment types. The ZAPC would like to see those affordable units made a requirement of this project with no donations to the city affordable housing fund allowed.
6.) The project team referred to Plan B of the Milwaukee Ave Plan as a basis for the project height and density. They had no comment when it was pointed out that there was also a Plan A which called for buildings no higher than 4 stories.
7.) The ZAPC needs more clearly detailed dimensional elevations for the project.
We strongly recommend that Alderman Moreno not approve the current zoning request and plans as presented to the group. We would welcome the project team to come back to another ZAPC meeting after making changes in their plans based on the community concerns.

This project team has requested a zoning change from C1-1 to RBPDw/B3.5 underlying/TOD for a fifteen and an eleven story connected towers with 253 rental units, 70 parking spaces and retail on the first floor at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

OK, well I will say that's great to hear Buster & I hope everyone finds mutual ground and is happy with the result. Like I said, I just am against spot zoning on principle, precedent is as real a phenomenon for real estate as it is for anything else regulated by law. Cori is dead correct that we don't need any more strip malls, but I do think the community should feel empowered to push back, the developer is going to make money in any case, we are the ones who have to live with it.

Keith, you didn't refute anything. Cherry picking responses from an everyblock thread is a sad excuse for a rebuttal.

Wade, Iand what exactly would you be using to determine those rents? Craigs List? Apartment Finders? Direct referrals? A weighted average of all? Supply and demand pricing analysis works on a *very* macro level or when you have consistency with a product, within a complex urban area like Chicago very subjective and random things are more important. Can you tell me the difference in rent per square foot as you move every 100 ft towards or away from the California L stop? How about with Rev Brew? I'm guessing no. Because such a thing is important to some people, while utterly meaningless to others. Access to information and all of the nuances that involves is the bigger factor nowadays, people who don't know how to prowl a neighborhood on foot looking for "for rent" signs don't get the same deals those people do. I was a landlord before converting my house to a SFH, and both of my parents were landlords for decades in Lake View and Logan Square. The general rule of thumb is that when you get good tenants you try and keep them. Getting an extra $25 a month isn't worth the uncertainty or possible loss of rent due to vacancies.

Not meaning to drop out of the larger discussion here, but loading this conversation is getting increasingly cumbersome, so I will let others have the last word(s) as they see fit.

Where are the trick or treaters?

I know the city of Chicago doesn't technically post trick or treating hours, but I expected to see a few groups by now. Am I just too early? Is the weather keeping everyone in?

  • Juan C. Ayala Belmont Cragin Resident

We usually go through 2 bags of candy, only had 4 groups come by, I assume the weather kept kids home.

  • Logan Blvd was packed with trick r treaters and people giving out candy all along the blvd. side streets were sparse.

Bicyclists Be Careful!

I was on a packed southbound Halsted bus this morning that had to make a very sudden stop in order to avoid a bicyclist who had swerved across the lane in front of it. The dude riding the bike was within inches (and a heroic bus driver's amazing reactions) of being run over, and it's clear he didn't realize the danger he'd caused.

I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Squarites?) ride to work downtown, so I'd like to offer up a reminder that a) not only can you get yourselves killed by pushing the limits of traffic laws, but b) an entire busload of people may get thrown several feet forward due to reckless bicyclist actions, causing injury to others. Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

  • I went to a fast food place the other day, and they had just mopped the floor. They placed a cone that read "caution, slippery when wet". How dare they not realize that I am capable of making my own decisions!

EVERYBODY be careful, please. Does everybody feel better now?

  • RaleighsMa Not fauxraged.

A little friendly reminder never hurt anyone.

I'm already missing the sun.....folks are getting so crabby and winter hasn't officially hit yet.

Help find Ichabod!

My friend's roommate accidentally let one of her cats out in the wee hours of the morning. Ichabod is a small, newly neutered boy that is all black with an abnormally long tail. He escaped from Palmer Square. Answers to Ichabod, Icky, or Lou (his brother's name).

Best running shoe selection?

Which shop city or near burbs do all y'all runners out there think has the best/widest selection? I think I should upgrade as I train for the Yeti Challenge & Yelp reviews of the usual suspects seem lacking in info about this particular nuance.
Thanks in advance

  • Fleet Feet. Always and only. Truly the best. I won't talk $&@" about others, but trust me. FF! USole would be next up.

  • Depends on if you know what you want or if you need to be fitted. I train marathon runners, and if they're concerned about getting the right fit, my new favorite store is Road Runner Sports on Kingsbury. Free parking. Excellent staff who all seem to be long-time runners. And they do a great job of gait analysis to ensure you buy the right shoe. Oh, and if you don't like the shoe, they have a pretty generous return policy.

Shots fired?

I think I heard around 7 or 8 shots Northwest of Drake and Altgeld at around 4:30 this morning. Did anyone else hear anything?

  • Man, that's right at the end of my block and I slept like a baby through it.

  • I live right where it says these shots were fired and was home and awake at the time. I didn't hear any shots or sirens. Weird.

LS Trick or Treating- Date and Times?

I'm not sure what tradition is as it's my first year in Logan Square but I wanted to be sure to be ready for any Trick or Treaters if there were to be some.

Anyone have info to share on any Neighborhood traditions?

  • I feel so out of touch! 3 or 4 in the afternoon is so early. When I was little it was a night time activity (6:00 to 8:00) for all ages. Thanks for posting, I'd never have known otherwise.

  • Susan S. resident

Just wanted to address the date question: It's Oct. 31.

Chicagoans may not realize that some places trick or treat Oct. 30 or by municipal fiat.

Electricity provider

My new apartment allows me to choose an electric provider. Does anyone have recommendations (or warnings) they can share?

Current tenants in the unit use ComEd, so it may be easiest to stick with that, I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

  • I called to cancel Integrys and return to ComEd. I was they would submit the request to change our provider. But was told no refunds were being given out? Is there something specific I should ask for? Thank you for you help!!

  • Mara, I simply asked for a refund of the amount that I overpaid. I received a $100 Visa debit card this week. Good luck.
