Bright lights?

Logan and California, might be the reflecting light from the snow, but is that Budweiser billboard really creating that bright of a blue-ish light from the highway/Western? It's past midnight, I can only imagine it gets more annoying further east...

Logan Pets out of business

I just received this email today about Logan Pets going out of business. I am so upset and disappointed. The owners are wonderful people and this was a rare location where my 13 year old dog loved to be groomed.

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

oh cool! Dr. Stricker is great - she used to work at Banfield! I hope they continue the retail side, so I can get fancy dog food without going all the way to Pet Supplies Plus.

  • Fuarain, I know salon dog on fullerton also carries the fancy food. They have many varieties, I stop in and get my Taste of the wild there.

New bar/restaurant from Owen & Engine owners. Maybe.

Was walking on Milwaukee this morning and saw workers demoing the storefront just south of The Owl at 2515 N. Milwaukee. There was a large sign on the door that said the permit belonged to Bixi Brewery.

That was the beginning of my internet sleuthing (slow work day). I couldn't find any permits for that location online, but found info on Bixi Brewing, LLC - http://www.zacksprivate.com/offering/96806 The owners seem to be Bo & Arden Fowler, who after some more research turned out to be the owners of Owen & Engine. So, I am concluding that Owen & Engine v2 is coming to the main Logan Square thoroughfare.

Anyone else have any details?

All I know about the Milshire is that it got purchased by Mark Fishman (developer) and will likely be rehabbed. He bought it right before new restrictions came into place trying to keep people from changing single-room occupancy hotels like the Milshire into something fancier/more expensive. But haven't heard any updates lately. Looks like a permit for rehab was denied in October/November. I would imagine he's working on moving that rehab forward.

  • Thanks. Yeah, I wasn't sure if he made the cut off. So he is going to be able to move forward on the rehab? I'm really looking forward to seeing the bottom storefront knocked out and windows go back in. I'm assuming a restaurant will go in there to be...

As for the 2515 building, we went in there too during MAAF and it just felt an old warehouse. I figured it would go pretty soon. It was an auto dealership like the megamall buildings I believe. I'm betting it won't open sooner than late summer.

Gas or Sewer smell?

There has been construction going on around Kimball and Palmer for the past week and a half. Today we noticed a strong sent of what could be gas in our apartment. The upstairs neighbors have the smell as well. It seems to be coming from the drain in the basement. Our landlord received a message from Peoples stating that other people around the area have had similar complaints and that the smell is not gas but a combination of paint thinner and ammonia in the sewers. The fire department also came out and checked out the situation and said the same thing. Has anyone else had any issues with this smell?

  • Yes...dry water traps..pour water down it..worked for me...on;y I used buckets...

  • i had this same problem a few days ago and a few buckets of water with some concentrated odor eliminator worked for me. another trick i learned from a friend is to put boric acid around the drains to stave off oriental roaches (waterbugs).

Interested in nanny share for 9 month old

Anyone have any advice or leads?

Congress Theatre Open House - Jan. 24 1-4PM?

Is this happening? Cannot find anything referenced other than in this article. Anyone plan on stopping in tomorrow? Do we expect the renderings to be presented?

http://chicago.curbed.com/archives/2015/01/13/congress-theater-redevelopment-ready-to-move-forward.php

  • Joe Kopera Logan Square resident since 1961 (54 years in Jan)

Michael Moyer was looking a about a two year project and that everything in the building would open at the same time. I also heard that the lobby would be open most of the time and that to the right of the lobby would be a entrance to the Inn on the Milwaukee Ave side.

  • I do hope it's LIVE entertainment and not the stuff that brings too much noise and BASS. Did Mr Moyers discuss the sound issue? Since the Congress Theater was originally designed as a movie theater, it was never properly equipped for optimal acoustics inside and out. The interior is going to need sound proofing. I'm wondering how that will that affect the restoration process?

spark energy update?

The other day, caught off guard, I allowed myself to switch to Spark Energy due to the persistence of two door to door salesmen. Looking at past threads on this topic, it seems lots of folks have had bad experiences, and some folks have seen reduced savings and feel it is a legit company with bad solicitation tactics.

Was I scammed? I feel like a goof for ignoring my gut. Thanks!

  • Joe

I have saved with first energy for electricity and direct energy on gas (except Dec, Peoples would have been cheaper) Peoples gas charge changes every month. Lots of threads on this.

  • Like kittyhop says, read the receipt they gave you - you have maybe a week from the signing date during which you can cancel. Not sure of the exact time limit; it IS short. But if you do some quick research you can decide whether Spark is worth it for a year.

Lost Lake coming to former Previous Administration Spot

Hi again, everyone. I read in Zagat's list of most anticipated spots of 2015 that our neighbor Paul McGee had joined forces with the Land & Sea Dept. folks - and that we're getting a tiki bar. Well, Lost Lake is opening up at Diversey & Kedzie, where Previous Administration was briefly. Should be opening sometime this month. With this, and Son of a Butcher opening at Diversey & Richmond soon, it's gonna be exciting up here!

Touch of Vintage Closed up - 2500 block of California?

I noticed the empty store front on the 2500 block of California. Use to be a little antique shop next to the hair salon. Did they move? Lot seems to be changing over there. Expanded salon, new Japanese toy store and new mercantile bar heading in. I wonder if the two sushi places will survive.

  • Sandra 10 year resident, Condo Board Treasurer

About Letizia's on California....I believe that her son Fabio has / is running a good share of the business and they've been building up the restaurant side (Enoteca Roma) for years. First on Division and now in Logan Sq., just a guess that it's been successful--they seem like smart business owners and continually re-invest in their businesses to help them grow. So having watched them over the years, it seems a natural progression, not so much a major shift in concept.

Paddy At It Again!

Found this this morning. Another love note from Paddy and her "Save Our Boulevards" initiative. This time, along with her usual hatred of Moreno, she hates bikes and bike lanes, and Seville, and developers, and high rises and urban planners and pawn shops and purveyors of liquor and bus rapid transit and transit oriented development. Not that they're going to go ahead with the protected bike lanes on Milwaukee Ave, but It is estimated that more than 40 percent of the traffic on this part of Milwaukee during peak rush hours are bicycles...so perhaps some safety improvements can be made.

  • If you "like" Chicago Bicycle Program (the city bicycle program) on Facebook, they have a good video there of a typical stream of bike commuters on Milwaukee ave during the morning commute. Very impressive amount of people biking these days.

  • Clark Street, to the east, can also be challenging in terms of bicycle traffic.

Lots of large developments have gone in, and landlords in older buildings have simply raised rents as the market will bear. The flaw in your reasoning is that demand is fixed. The people these units will appeal to are by no means limited to those in the neighborhood. If I was a landlord I'd be plenty satisfied these buildings were in my economic self-interest. They are simply out of scale, we will see what the developer comes back with.

ComEd vs. integrys vs. Direct Energy?

I know this question has been posed numerous times but is the a truly better more cost effective alternative to ComEd? Last night as I was dutifully shoveling the snow from my sidewalk (unlike some but that's another post), 2 young women approached me trying to get me to switch from integrys to direct energy. They said that integrys charges a substantial "customer fee" to each customer that would be eliminated if I switch to them. I actually never see the bill as my wife pays it but I'm still left with the question of who is truly the most cost effective for consumers. Any ideas?

It was their comfort and control 24 package. I just went to their website and saw their rates are much higher now. They fixed the rate for 24 months, at which time it becomes variable. The only thing that "locks" me in is the cost of the Nest. If I leave before the 24 months, I am responsible for paying them for the Nest. After the 24 months, if I don't like the variable rate I am free to switch to another plan or back to ComEd. Technically, I'm free to switch now - but would incur a cost of $249 to cover the Nest. That said, if I wanted to, I could always sell the Nest and recover most of that cost. But, again, it appears their rates are significantly higher than they were just a few months ago when I switched.

They don't have to be so large KJ...that's why they had a community meeting about it. We're waiting for revised, presumably scaled-down, plans to be presented again. To each their own in terms of taste. I happen to like the building on the old Pizza Hut site, and the longstanding Noble Square Co-Op houses a lot of people that have been here, likely, a lot longer than you. Nice co-op housing keeps costs low. Makes sense to me to have density near El stop. I also think a co-op and section 8 are two different things. Not that it really matters...they're both necessary and helpful.

  • Something tells me Moreno won't release new plans to the community until after the election. It is quiet for a reason.

Ald. Rey Colon (35th) was found not guilty Monday on charges of drunken driving that stemmed from a July after-midnight traffic stop along the Eisenhower Expressway.
http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150105/loop/ald-colon-found-not-guilty-of-dui-summer-traffic-stop
"I woke up this morning trusting that God would do His job and that the justice system would do its job, and I just want to go back to do my job," Colon said immediately after the verdict was rendered by Judge James Pieczonka in Cook County Circuit Court.

Pieczonka said he did not see any "substantial" evidence of erratic driving on Colon's part. While he granted that Colon's eyes seemed "a little bloodshot" in his mug shot, he added, "I've seen a lot worse."

Key evidence included an 18-minute video showing Colon's traffic stop about 1 a.m. July 25 at the Homan Avenue exit off the westbound Eisenhower Expressway. Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Michael Clarke argued "the evidence is overwhelming" showing Colon waving his arms trying to balance on one foot and failing to walk heel to toe in a straight line.

State Trooper Eric David testified that Colon was driving without his lights on and that his "right tires were clearly over the line" on the right shoulder before being stopped. He said Colon failed a horizontal vision test, indicating impairment, as well as walk-and-turn and balancing-on-one-leg tests. David said he smelled alcohol on Colon's breath and that the alderman was "swaying while standing" and had to wave his arms to maintain his balance on one leg, and even then touched the other foot to the ground without being able to stand immobile for 30 seconds.

David said Colon's eyes were "bloodshot glassy red" and that he was, in David's opinion, "unfit to drive."

Yet Colon, who did not testify in his own defense, said after the trial that "the tape was exactly what I remembered" and helped him fight the charges.....

Driving while drunk and endangering others far exceeds "his private life." You don't have a vote here.

  • I thought politicians were suppose to 'represent the people' in public and private. This isn't a 'one time deal' and he definitely has a problem; IF you have friends, relatives, and love ones killed by drunk drivers, you wouldn't consider it a 'private' matter. This whole thing is a sad excuse for an individual. But I respect your opinion.

Helicopters to the west?

Anyone know why all the helicopters are circling west of Sacramento? I believe we counted four. They were pretty close to us at Richmond and Logan but eventually moved further west?

  • I love helicopters but seeing four news choppers hovering in a star formation above some random location in the city is about as exciting or intriguing to me as seeing a garbage truck or a fire truck.

  • Carrie K Chicago Public School Teacher

Also - watched the news at 10 and did not see anything. Seemed far west of us to be Kennedy. However now that Bart explained how they film perhaps it was an accident on the Kennedy that was dropped from news coverage at 10 for more important stories.

How do I stop La Raza and Hoy from delivering to my address???

Today the front yard is filled with soggy ads; their plastic 'holders' never do.

Thanks!

  • I asked, twice, and delivery stopped. (Although one landed on our stoop this week.)

  • ENC

I emailed Ron Buss at the Tribune. He informed me that La Raza is a different company (not Tribune). He can address stopping Plum/Local Values deliveries. Does anyone have contact information to stop La Raza deliveries?

Dress alterations

Hey neighbors!

I am looking for someone to alter a bridesmaid dress. Anyone have recommendations?

I would appreciate any help!

  • I got her number from a friend and it matches the one on Yelp. It has been a few months since I had anything tailored through, I wonder if it's possible the number has changed? It's worth trying a walk-in! Good luck!

  • Listed one was also the one I used (in September). You can just walk in without an appointment, though.

The General coming to the former Provenance space on California

Hi all - I know we often share of restaurant openings/closings, and saw this in my Facebook feed, so thought I would post here, as well. Related - but an aside - anyone know what's going into the Alex's Cleaner spot in Kedzie?

  • Correct, Bathhouse John.

Excited for more openings in the neighborhood.

  • Thank You for the info Ellen and Bathhouse John! I agree Flipside and The General sound delightful! Looking forward to not having to go to Wicker Park to get a decorated TACO!

Are they gone already? They have been closed for a few weeks, but the TV/ monitor is still on in there. Just curious. Kind of pricey, but such a nice little addition to the neighborhood.

  • im still wondering if this place is closed up for good...

  • I believe I saw the business for sale on Everyblock for 169k so unfortunately I think they are gone for good.

Saw the police there last night...and this morning I see these signs. Curious if anyone knows what happened.

finally talked to sfr owner on Saturday. He heard from the guy who was running Mitad that he had a "handshake" deal with the building owner to rent to own or something like that. He showed up to work and found the locks being changed -- building owner had sold to someone who is supposedly opening their own restaurant there -- police involvement was dispute over the property still in the bar at the time of the lock change. All kinds of rumors about who bought building and what kind of restaurant is going in there are flying, but fro the one-sided version I heard the abruptness was some kind of break-down of verbal agreement between building owner and Mitad renter.
