Anyone tried out Logan Square Fitness yet?

Just wondered what the overall vibe is, if it gets packed at certain hours, etc. Has anyone joined - what do you think?

  • I agree with everyone else, its never very crowded and the guy at the front desk is always really nice. The classes are free too, I've taken the yoga and x-fit class' and both are great, and the instructors are nice too. I only live two blocks away so I've never used the locker rooms, but I don't have any complaints, and its going to get bigger. They're going to open a much larger class area as well.

  • I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships,...

I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships, which they are offering until the end of October (not sure how the price works out for those). I like the month to month option, especially since I had no idea if I would like it/want to stay when I first signed up. I have done a bunch of the regularly scheduled yoga classes, which are good. I have also gone to some early-morning (6:30am) pop-up yoga classes, which were great but only had 2 or 3 people. I hope they add regular morning yoga classes, but I have been told by the guy at the front desk that they are planning to push back evening classes and add additional class times as well (they said Sept. 23rd is the planned date for this, but they are notoriously bad about keeping their promises in terms of dates--see: Grand Opening).

TL;DR Definitely worth it to join, especially if you live very close.

Professional Carpet guys in Logan?

Hi everyone, I'm looking to redo the carpet in my basement with something other than nasty Burbur. I've had absolutely fantastic luck previously here on EB with workers people recommended (shoutout to Ashland Glass for a fantastic custom shower!). Just curious if anyone has someone who could redo carpet that they liked.

Thanks!

  • Mark at romar flooring does a great job with carpeting! 847)652-6183, they've donea couple installations for me. And a side note...my husband has worked for Ashland glass for 20 years, glad you liked their work.

  • Wall to wall carpet in a basement? Always a chance of flooding and/or sewer backup.
Maybe you should consider area rugs!

  • Brad, it is a finished basement that is 1/2 tile and 1/2 carpet with double sump pumps (for redundancy, I was a boys scout once) and was built in 2006. It isn't going to flood. It also has a special valve that prevents sewer overflow.

I've got one of those Dyson Animal Hair vacuums and it got ahold of 1 loose piece of the burbur. Before I had a chance to turn it off, it had pulled a run about 10ft long. I hate burbur and would rather just replace it. Also an approximately 500sqft area rug isn't really all that practical, but thanks for the suggestion!

Ixchel, thankyou, I'll look them up. Ashland put in an absolutely beautiful custom glass door in our master bathroom shower, really pleased with their work so your hubby must know what he's doing :)

Craig Woods?

If anyone knows someone named Craig Woods, please PM me. I live near Logan and California and for a week now have had two packages sitting at the entrance to my apartment building addressed to Craig Woods. There are only five units in this building and no one by that name has lived here in the six years I have been at this address. (Let's also take a moment to reflect on the fact that there have been two packages sitting outside our door for over a week and they haven't been stolen...WHAT?!?!)

  • I got my packages! They were misplaced BABY SHOWER REGISTRY gifts sent up the street. Thanks all!

AVOID part duex

Avoid Whipple and Dickens. Off leash Doberman with a jerk of an owner. Very hostile. Dog ran after my pup and I. I asked him to call his dog politely and he mocked me. Said "yea I'll call my dog while I'm just here on my property." It was the ALLEY behind that jungle of a yard house. Expletives exchanged.
about it

Lost Male Tuxedo Cat

Hi everyone, last night (9/9/14) my black and white tuxedo cat, Klaus, got out of my house on Lyndale just west of California. He is neutered and not microchipped, has a black nose with a black mark under his nose. Klaus has a small cyst on his left shoulder. Klaus is VERY FRIENDLY and will probably come when called. Please let me know if you see him or manage to grab him.

  • Oh, good for him and thanks to you!! I was just going to message you that PAWS might be a good place got low cost chip. 26th Street has a clinic open @ 9, mostly for vaccines but I got my dog chipped there. You do have to pay the chip peeps to register the number to yourself. Again, good job!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm probably going to bring him to tree house since I'm a very active volunteer and also in a low cost zip code for them. PAWS is sort of a hike. Thank you so much for all of your tips!

Have Replacement Windows, Need Affordable Install

We have 5 replacement windows we want to install in our 1-story single family home. We're a young couple on a budget looking for someone who does professional grade work, but maybe does it on the side. Can anyone share what they've paid for similar work, and/or perhaps recommend contact info for a handyman or contractor you trust? Or instead anyone local you'd recommend avoiding? Thanks in advance!

  • My neighbor does an excellent job; do you want me to contact him? You can see his windows done in his home as well.

  • We've had All American Glass out twice recently to fix windows (not replace). The first fix was so quick and easy for them, they did it for free. The second time, they replace a very large broken window pane and it was very fast and very quick. I would recommend them to at least give you an estimate. We would definitely use them again.

Floor joist repair

The retail location on the first floor of our condo building experienced some water damage which led to the rotting out of the floor joists below the unit. It looks like we need about 8 -10, 20 foot long manufactured I-beams replaced but I have no clue who can do this work. Anyone have any suggestions for companies who may be able to handle this, it is much appreciated.

trc remodeling 773-744-9130 stephan will answer when you call. he is a miracle worker

  • Thanks for the help

  • This sounds like serious structural work. Make sure you get a licensed and bonded contractor. And pull a permit so that the work is inspected. It will add to the costs but you want it done right. It might require and engineer's /architect's review.

Don't mess around or go cheep on structure.

Feral cat help needed.

Hi neighbors. Looking for some help for a feral cat I have been feeding for past 10 years. I am moving out of the state and cannot bring a feral to condo I am renting as there is no backyard for her and no room inside with my seven cats. Ideally one of my neighbors will continue to feed her but if not maybe someone knows of a nearby cat colony I can relocate her to. I am on Whipple between Schubert and Logan Blvd. she was trapped and fixed many years ago.

  • I've done several Cats at Work deployments, but didn't know about an age issue-thanks. It would be hard to relocate a feral cat without it spending several weeks in an acclimation crate, with a caretaker providing daily care (food, litter box cleaning, etc.). Otherwise, the cat will just take off.

  • PetParent Founder of Pets Are Like Family

Tree House is definitely your best bet. They are the sanctioned organization that registers feral cat caretakers on the north side of Chicago. PAWS registers those on the south side and several suburban groups register other parts of Cook County. This is part of the Cook County Feral Cat Ordinance....

PAWS registers those on the south side and several suburban groups register other parts of Cook County. This is part of the Cook County Feral Cat Ordinance. I am a registered feral cat caretaker through Tree House. Yes, they are often busy and overworked and underfunded, like any other non-profit, but they do help. There is a process that they employ for relocating feral cats from one colony to another. They do help with this. Please reach out to them, and thank you so much for caring for this outdoor cat all these years.

Crosswalk Enforcement

Did anyone else notice eight or so CPD vehicles nailing cars for not stopping in the crosswalks by the Logan Square Blue Line stop? I know it needs to be enforced, but are eight cars necessary? It was causing a bit of a traffic jam with the cars pulled over and adding more stress to a crappy day and people trying to get on the L.

  • If crosswalk laws can be implemented successfully in several major cities (all the ones I've lived in plus others, including car-centric LA and masshole centric Boston), perhaps the driving culture of Chicago is the thing that isn't smart.

Roll out of the law seems botched, and aside from a sting enforcement is non-existent.

The law is not the problem.

  • Peter C. . . good point! As a driver I was unaware of the new state law a year after it was in place.

CTA Blue Line / California Stop closed for renovation work

#56 Milwaukee buses are also available as alternate service to reach Logan Square or Western stations, downtown, or other destinations along the Blue Line. Additional #56 service will be added between California and downtown during weekday rush periods, southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening.

Overnight bus service will be provided on the new #N56 California Station Owl route during the closure, to link to the closest stations in either direction of the closed California station.

The California and Damen closures are to rehab the station houses, not track work, so trains run right on through without stopping. I did notice a good slow down last night on the way home a bit later in the evening.

All this work is part of the large ~$500M Blue Line renovation, but there were two very different phases.

Again, only extra buses are being made available, no shuttles during this station closure phase I believe.

I went to Cozy for lunch today!

Great to see them back in action- they had issues with the water line and inside they were slow in getting the floor done- well, after being closed for the Spring and Summer, they are open for business.

The menu is about the same, the space inside is wonderful, the booths in the old part have been reupholstered, the new addition is large and looks great! I'll save my food review for yelp, stay tuned.

  • That's the only decent breakfast place around where we can walk to breakfast with our kid. Nothing earth shattering about the place, but good cheap diners are a dying breed and it's good to see CC roll with the times.

  • I cannot wait for a break from crazy work hours to enjoy a good breakfast! The reno looks great, too.

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

  • John as an insurance broker I could appreciate confidentiality. My point was not clear. If one was to inquire about a property for sale, if asked, wouldn't an investor be privy to if there were active leases and if there were issues, I.E. Full Disclosure, from the agent representing the property.

It's not uncommon for people to chat aka vent about a deal going south also over drinks, no? If that was the case, all of us salesmen would be in trouble.

    Long live the mustache!

  • Lincoln Square location not closing. Really nice cheese and wine at that store and very helpful staff! Happy to have them in the area and a loss for Logan Square.

antique chandelier free to a good home

I'm giving away this antique chandelier if any neighbors would like it. It's got CFL bulbs in it currently. It's been in my garage for a few months now and needs a good dusting. It works great, though, and would look nice in the right dining room. Message me through the site if you'd like to come and pick it up. See attached photo. Thanks.

The owner did say they would open this week- but as of 6AM Labor Day- still closed- looks to me like perhaps they may have a gas line issue- crews were working leading into the Cozy last week on Milwaukee and by the looks of the parking lot- the back hoes are still ready to work some more.

Stay tuned- the tables are set, the lights are on down low- they look ready to open at anytime.

  • Thanks Jen- there will be a major investigation if they don't open soon! We can't have this! LOL

  • Jen's (hopefully) right! I called yesterday to see if they were open, and the guy I spoke with said they're looking at Wednesday opening!

    @Tracy -

    1) I have no context into your situation so I'm not making any judgements. It's also your right to decry the CACC (which, by the way, isn't a "business" - it's a government entity).

    2) Rescues, including PAWS, do not just blindly take in animals and tell the individual(s) releasing those animals that they are taking them. PAWS, like the CACC, is very transparent, and will tell you immediately where the animal will be placed. Sometimes that's with them, but often times, you are correct - they often go to the CACC (PAWS is usually close to full at all times, as that's the entire point of their organization). However there is no conspiracy to "hide" this - it is in fact spelled out clearly when releasing an animal to them.

    3) There is no issue with you stating what is already transparent information, but you clearly have an ax to grind with the CACC. You may consider the CACC "nasty", but editorializing an organization that's both needed in the city (by the population as well as animal rescues) and actively working towards animal welfare is doing no one any favors with your narrow viewpoint. You may have had an unfortunate situation with the CACC, but it's also unfair to paint the org as universally reviled because of it (hence my comments).

    4) I'm not going to have a discussion on CACC politics and operations and further derail this thread.

If that dog's owners cannot be found (and as @rogerparker says, owners are told to check the CACC first and foremost) and she ends up at the CACC, I can guarantee you that as long as she's not horribly reactive to anyone who approaches her that dog will stay there MAYBE a month (more like two weeks at most). Dogs like that have no problem finding homes and are snapped up instantly at the CACC.

I have had no luck so far but I have experience with this breed and I have another medium sized pup at the moment who needs a friend. I work in the dog care industry so it's definitely not my first rodeo. I'm unsure if it's still okay to call you but if so, please do let me know I'd love to keep in contact about her.

Provenance Food and Wine to close Sep 27 & what you can do about it

In a nutshell, new landlords didn't renew their lease and they will have to vacate by September 27.

http://chicagoist.com/2014/08/07/provenance_food_wines_logan_square.php

Apparently, Alderman Moreno wants to help, so calling all neighbors to call/write the Alderman to help Provenance stay at its current location through the holiday season. This is the only way the owners will at least be in a position to consider keeping the store in the neighborhood, given the financial burden of moving. The alderman's chief of staff's e-mail is Raymond.Valadez@cityofchicago.org.

Andrew-I think public officials would label the answer to all of your questions under the heading, "constituent services." The questions you pose are imponderables, and have existed since the birth of government. Why did one who pled his case before Hammurabi deserve to be recognized before the thousands of other cases that could have warranted the emperor's attentions? Ask, and you may or may not receive. Provenance asked, they received. As for the standard you seek to understand, that answer can only be provided by Hammurabi, err...the Alderman's office. This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I attended the community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here.

Was this the doings of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of the neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's your right to do business in the space only.

Signed a very disappointed FORMER customer.

Fall into sinkhole brings $2.27M verdict for mail carrier

A Cook County jury awarded a postal worker $2.27 million after he snagged his foot in a sinkhole on a Logan Square mail delivery route.

During the litigation, the City of Chicago admitted it knew about the sinkhole in the marked crosswalk at Altgeld Street and Kimball Avenue and did not repair it before Wantan Montgomery, a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, fell in.

In March 2009, Montgomery was pushing a mail cart and could not see the sinkhole as he walked over it.

He twisted his knee as he fell and suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He had it repaired with a bone graft and with two additional surgeries, followed by two years of physical therapy.

Montgomery filed a lawsuit against the city in 2009, alleging city officials knew about the sinkhole for at least six months and failed to repair it...[truncated]

Gentrification has little to do with race and everything to do with supply and demand. Or do you think that only white people like to live in nice neighborhoods?

Why are Chicago's streets so bad simply because the city cannot get it around their heads to be consistent with the kind of material they use when different departments, and different entities have to do work under them???
Is it any wonder there are potholes?

when I called the city about rats in my alley and seen crossing the street & sidewalk, they came out and did an inspection, made some recommendations to help prevent rat hiding places. I looked around in the alley where rats seemed to go and found a hole at the bottom of a dumpster across the alley from me. I called the owner of the dumpster and he was concerned and had the dumpster replaced. That solved our major rat problem. It was like a rat diner in the dumpster, rats would go in and out of the hole, we finally saw rats coming out of the hole and that is how the hole was found. Check around your area for any possible rat 'homes/diners', keep contacting the city to come out and inspect the area. Check for overflowing garbage bins/dumpsters, contact the owners. We also did our own rat baiting with rat traps, all this helped. FYI - I feel the plastic garbage bins contribute to rat problem, wind blows lids open, they tip easily and have holes chewed in them, the metal cans were better. Good luck.

hotrock - the rats can climb up the plastic bins and open the lids far enough to get in.

on raccoons - i forget the name of the parasite, but they carry one that is very dangerous for children. i've had raccoons walk into my open LS garage while i was in there. absolutely stay away. yes, they are soooo cute and will eat out of your hand but NEVER feed them or they will move into your house. these pests caused over $20,000 damage to a home my parents once had in the burbs. and the filth ... omg, you have no idea. they had to tear out every ceiling in every room.

"Micro-Apartments" Plan for Car Wash Across from Post Office

Neighbors -

A developer is asking for an upzoning from C1-1 to C2-3 for the old car wash across from the post office so he can build 56 "micro-apartments" on the site.

Apparently there will be a public meeting on the proposal on Wednesday - try and make it - 6:30PM at Haas Park.

At $1,000 for a 320 square foot convertible you're looking at higher rental prices comparatively then the most expensive rentals located downtown or in River North (which tend to run at about ~$3 sq. ft.). I don't think this building will reach capacity under its current business model. We have zoning for a reason... I'm sure this building will get approved and will still be called "micro" apartments, but the unit count will likely come down to something like 35 units at the most.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

Case in point: they've reduced the number of units again down to 28 studios and 28 one- and two-bedrooms. No more "micro" apartments. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140828/logan-square/logan-square-micro-apartment-plan-gains-support-but-parking-issue
