Found chicken

Anyone missing a red/orange colored chicken? Found around Logan and Sacramento. It's a very personable chicken but we aren't in the market for a pet chicken at the moment. I would like to see it go to a good home and not be eaten...

  • i have never been able to add a photo after the post is up. best you can do is put the link to it on your photo sharing site that people can click to look at it.

  • We lost three chickens to raccoons this year. Not sure if that counts. We could use a replacement!

Is there good stereo repair nearby?

i have an older (90s) pioneer turntable where the arm is messed up (it keeps going over like it's playing a 45 no matter what you set it to 33 or 45. also needs a new needle cartridge. is there a place you know of that repairs older stereos and isn't crazy expensive, or should i just chuck it and get a new turntable?

Deck construction folks?

Hi all. I'm looking to re-do my backyard deck and was wondering if anyone had some good folks they could point me towards? Yelp seems less than helpful and Angie's List is largely bought and paid for. Many thanks in advance.

  • I have a contractor friend who does great work. Tim Neilsen at Elite Construction - 312.859.3687

  • Call John Bura, 773-679-9378. He's done 3 decks and porches for me personally, half a dozen for clients of mine, and just did a beautiful high end deck for my neighbors. It's a family business, and they do a great job for a reasonable price.

Fireworks or gunshots?

Anybody just hear the popping by Kedzie and Sawyer? Just not sure if it was fireworks or gunshots. Seemed like there was some yelling too.

Cozy Corner Diner- (not yet)

The owner did say they would open this week- but as of 6AM Labor Day- still closed- looks to me like perhaps they may have a gas line issue- crews were working leading into the Cozy last week on Milwaukee and by the looks of the parking lot- the back hoes are still ready to work some more.

Stay tuned- the tables are set, the lights are on down low- they look ready to open at anytime.

  • Thanks Jen- there will be a major investigation if they don't open soon! We can't have this! LOL

  • Jen's (hopefully) right! I called yesterday to see if they were open, and the guy I spoke with said they're looking at Wednesday opening!

Looking for someone to refinish a dining room table

Does anyone have a recommendation on someone that can refinish a dining room table. We have some inlay that is coming loose we had a glue mishap on the top and a poor job to fix it. Preferably they don't have to remove it since it weighs a few hundred pounds and we live on the 3rd floor.

  • Try Chicago Furniture Revival. My company works with them often and they do good work.

ComEd fridge recycling program

Hi. Has anyone used the ComEd pickup/recycleing program? Did they pickup when they said they were going to? Did you have to wait around all day? They must've had quite a response because they used to pay $50 not $35.

https://www.comed.com/home-savings/rebates-incentives/Pages/refrigerator-recycling.aspx

  • Thank you John! That makes sense!

  • pha que this will appear next to all of your posts

i waited around all day 3 - yes, that's THREE times and they kept blowing it off... once because they couldn't figure out a way to drive around a viaduct at bloomingdale or back down an alley. ridiculous and so i decided to just let the scrappers take it

Lawndale/Fullerton Melee

Anybody have any insight into the dust up near Fullerton and Lawndale last night around 11:45 p.m. or so? There's been an uptick in rival tagging in the alley near there, and there was some sort of scuffle; though I couldn't quite see what was going on, I heard it, and saw maybe four squad cars hit the scene and bust it up. Thanks.

  • ANR

I used to live at that intersection and it seemed like there was something going on every other day. We finally moved when it got to be too much (we weren't sleeping because of the fights and gunshots outside our bedroom window). Be safe, my friend.

  • Craig Born and raised in the city.

An I/G was killed last week in MLD territory. The I/G funeral was on Armitage and the idiot gangbangers walked to where the dead idiot was killed. 014 district police arrested a bunch of gangbangers. Later that night that same group was seen walking around North/Hamlin.

Interested in 'red wiggler' worm bins in the spring?

OK, I'll admit that the warmer weather got me thinking 'gardening' mode... You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

  • Hello! If anyone still needs worms, I have a ton! Send me a PM to erinlynn 60618 @ gmail.com These are originally from Kitty's batch.

  • I have worms, too, also from Kitty's batch. Super productive little guys (and gals).

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

  • I don't think you hang out at the same places Jim. It does quite well even without your business believe it or not!

  • The Lincoln Square shop IS NOT closing. For goodness sake, they're raffling off a gift certificate to that shop for people who brought in food for Common Pantry. And if they were going to "squat" in that space, why is Provenance selling off fixtures? Hard to put stuff on shelves...

Enough of this bad mouthing of what's been a good store & an asset to the community. Enough of all the nasty talk about them on here. It seems since Every Block returned it's been taken over by trolls who seem to want to stir up the hate.

If anyone is interested in starting a worm bin, I can share some red wigglers. Kittyhop here on EB started me off with some and I'm looking to pay it forward. You just need to bring a bin, I can get you started.

I live in Alderman Maldonado's ward (26th, Logan Square/Humboldt Park) and have called his office 3-4 times over the last few months to ask for information. Each time I call, I talk to a receptionist and then I am transferred to a voice mail where I leave a message and never get a return call. The last time I called I told the receptionist that I had left several messages, so she said she would give the right person my contact information, and I still never heard back. I was calling about simple things such as: recycling for our block and what can be done about all the solicitation material that is left on our front steps and gates. I even called to try and make an appointment with the Alderman to discuss items in person since I work until 5:30 and cannot make it to his Monday community meetings by 6pm, but did not get a call back. His website says “An operator will take your contact information and record your issues and concerns. Then you will be referred to the proper staff or receive a call back.” But this is not true. Has anyone had any luck with Alderman Maldonado’s office?

  • NFT LS landlord and resident

It should not require a visit to get something done. I've called and emailed 4 times in the past 2 months weeks to get a sewer fixed that overflows every time it rains, even minimally, and blocks a lane of traffic. I've had 3 tickets closed by 311 with no response just in the last two months. I've been trying to get this fixed since 2011. It should not be this hard.

  • Agreed...can you go directly to the city on this? Can you present a 'log' of all your attempts...even a letter (certified so you know he got it) to the mayor's office? Good luck..very frustrating when all 'we' are asking for are the 'basics...

Red Lion Logan Square Now Open

I drove by this place yesterday and saw they were open for business early in the morning. Looks like we've got a new neighborhood bar.

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

That's awesome Jason. I want as many local businesses as we can get. I'm tired of having to walk all the way to Bucktown to find a nice open air place to hang out. Although the walk is probably good for me.

I noticed the sign the other night while riding my bike actually. Almost had a seizure and fell off.

  • i heard -- and have to check out -- that they are having success booking good bands on fri/sat and get a crowd then. how that works with their byob status, i have no idea!
