Despite neglecting the West Side, Rahm wins in most of the West Side. What gives???

I don't get it. City hall consistently neglects the west side over and over again. They pour most of their resources into downtown or the northside and completely neglect the west side. West siders whine and complain yet they vote for the establishment.

For all you West Side Rahm supporters, what makes you think city hall will treat the west side any different in the next 4 years?

Rahm is the Mayor but he is entitled to his personal opinions just like everyone else. There is good argument that the Obama library should be on the South side but, I agree that there should be equal bidding for the structure beyond us versus them. U of C made a grave error in selecting the park land and for that reason they should lose a fair bid with us on the west side. If the mayor plays a hand in this then there should be more than just us complaining there should be legal ramifications. We will see what happens but, I think each has there right to make their own choices without others getting upset about it if that is what the believe. As the saying goes "I may not like your choice but, I would lay down my life for your right to make it"

Any new Businesses in East & West Garfield Park?

I always heard that the West side was the red-headed step-child of black Chicago. Always ignored and last to get city services. After living hear for a few years, I realize this is definitely the case. Our Rotten Mayor Rahm Emanuel has completely ignored the West side, EVEN during his re-election bid. He doesn't even care to get our votes.

The West side is completely stagnant. I've been following many of the events, upgrades and investments happening throughout the entire South side from Pullman, Roseland, Washington Park, Bronzeville & especially Englewood. Englewood is getting a Whole Foods Market, has several new technology incubators, food labs, King-Kennedy College, several new coffee shops, independently owned cafes/restaurants and more. Englewood is actually on the come-up and the ball is rolling! I LOVE IT! Englewood is grass-rooting itself out the hole! I'm extremely happy for them because I love a "comeback against all odds" story,

Why are East Garfield Park & West Garfield Park still ignored? I think I have to look in the mirror on this one. We allow an Alderman to continue getting into office without holding him accountable for doing absolutely nothing. I also don't think people on the West side have the innovation or community pride to make such changes in our community. I see no visual signs of cultural pride such as tech incubators, coffee shops, independently owned boutiques, art galleries, musical events, playhouses etc. happening on the West side. Alderman Ervin would rather host a Superbowl Party with strippers for West side gangsters. I'm beginning to believe what everyone told me about Garfield Park before moving here. The West side is just different (and not in a good way).

Preparing four the next four years!

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone voted on yesterday.
As we prepare for the next four years with Ervin what are some of your concerns or wishes?
If there is a contender (Alderman) out there now is the time to state your intend and begin your campaign not a month before the next election.
Let's come up with the best candidate and rally behind that ONE person.
24th ward let's be heard!

  • we need change CLEAN-UP THE CORNERS

    I agree.

And don't forget to go out & vote for Chuy Garcia on April 7th. GO OUT AND VOTE!!

Maybe there's a possibility that Chuy Garcia will hold Alderman Jason Ervin accountable for unacceptable leadership over the 28th ward? At least he'll probably hear us out. The machine is dying in Chicago and this is another way to get rid of Ervin.

Apparently, the horrible living conditions of the West side are acceptable standards for Rahm Emanuel (in a "so-called" world-class city) so Rahm must go! I'm hoping Chuy Garcia will not allow 28 to continue on in the same condition that's been allowed since I've lived here.

Rahm has visited every Southside EL stop, multiple times over the past 4 months. He's blatantly ignored the West side and given us the middle finger! When was the last time he was on a West side EL stop? He didn't even want our vote before. He "chalked-up" the 28th ward as a loss. But I guarantee you he'll be humming around the 28th ward over the next 6 weeks...asking you for another chance. He and Alderman Jason Ervin gave us 4 years of nothing!

    VOTE FOR CHUY GARCIA!!

At last Thursday’s 24t ward alderman’s meeting, we were informed that a new food mart/liquor store was attempting to open at 19th and Pulaski. The businessman was on hand to answer questions. Luckily, there were community members of stature there to voice opposition. The businessman was asked where his other stores were located, so that we could see their effects on the surrounding neighborhood. This question was only partially answered with a location given in Franklin Park.
We were told that the liquor commission would poll the residents within 250 feet of the proposed site for their approval. 250 feet!. A new liquor store affects an area much larger than 250 feet, not only physically but also in terms of how our neighborhood is perceived. We are all a part of North Lawndale and these things affect us all.
Recently, we were informed that a new, unsecured residential center for at risk youth would be built in our community. Again we were told that the surrounding neighborhood was polled and approval was given. As was the case with the liquor store, we were told that this facility would bring jobs. But at what cost? It seems that we are perceived as being so desperate that we will accept anything, just as long as we get to eat whatever scraps society decides to throw at us. What kind of North Lawndale do we want?
We send our children to school with the hope that they will prosper in life. Once that prosperity comes, where will they live? Where will they want to live? Are we preparing North Lawndale for the prosperity of our children or for more decay?
At every opportunity, we need to let our elected officials know that we will not accept any more scraps that are thrown our way. We must let them and everyone else know that we have standards and that those standards call for the betterment of North Lawndale, not just more of the same.

  • Rochelle North Lawndale Resident since 1959

Thanks Seth, it showed up as a new post on my end. Go figure!

The store on 19th & Pulaski is still in question though, because it always looks like it's about to open.

The disappeared: Chicago police detain Americans at abuse-laden 'black site'

This is a very interesting article.

The Chicago police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.

The facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square, has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic constitutional rights. I just learned another profound, new word while reading "SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME": phantasmagoric, which means illusion and is aptly applied to this building that has had a tremendous tectonic impact on us. Did any of our elected officials have knowledge of the internal workings of the building?

Trash Pick Up issuse

Anyone else in Garfield Park area (Homan and Washington ) intersection have problems with trash pick up?

At my residence they didn't pick up last week, (week of crazy snow fall) so I waited and happen to catch them picking up the DIBS trash (which i am thankful for) , and notifed them that they didn't pick up yet. They were like " Yes we did this morning" , Im like BullCR*P its still back there 10 mins ago.

Anyone else have this problem?

  • Yes that is very sad with that issue. They just think as it is lower income people and some riff raff in this neighborhood that they dont care and just brush it over.

    The emails :

buying a house by GPC

I'm considering buying a house just north of Garfield Park Conservatory, on n central park ave, near Franklin blvd. Is this area safe for a family with a baby? Ive been to the conservatory lots of times, but never fully explored the area, or been around at night.
What are your thoughts on the direction this neighborhood is taking, and does anyone know what's going on with the vacant Laura Ward school? Is this an area now used for squatters or drug deals?
Thanks!

It's still social-economically mixed and it's getting better by far. But they're still building lots of subsidized housing in the area too. My personal take is that it'll just be an extension of East Humboldt park over the next five years or so. The city of Chicago does a poor job of controlling crime, curfew, loitering and property upkeep on the West side. Until the city begins to enforce these problems I don't see that area of the West side becoming a Logan Square or West Town sort of neighborhood.

Many home owners do their part to keep things up but the slum lords and vagrants are the ones who make it difficult to live on the West side. For now, I just think the area is mostly a somewhat affordable area to have shelter on the West side of the city.

  • I have been there 45 years. It has it's UPS and downs, good and bad. We have gone through periods when its good and periods when its bad. Right now we're in a bad cycle, hopefully we're on the downside. The school is closed. Part of our illustrious mayor's plan...

They are pouring money into the flower house. So there is a plan for the neighborhood. You just have to wait and see. We are not now nor have we ever been part of Humboldt park, although it seems as if someone has a plan and is trying to annex it. 30 minutes from just about any place on the city, 15 minutes from downtown by el. It's not bad, its not great, its just home.

I am voting for Frank Bass because he is the only candidate with significant policy and legislative experience. We need someone to hit the ground running, not learn on the job.

Also, we need to tap the considerable talents, skills and commitment of our residents. Two ways to do this are through the formation of block clubs and increased participation in CAPS. Mr. Bass specifically mentions these strategies on his website.

Another candidate, Darren Tillis, has shown that he considers resident involvement to be an interference. In the spring of last year he was one of eleven members of the North Lawndale Presidential Library Committee founded by Paul Norrington. Mr. Norrington asked Mr. Tillis to facilitate the committee meetings. All of the members of the committee worked together to approach UIC to be a partner and all of the members worked together to submit material for the first proposal. When it was announced in September that UIC/North Lawndale made the finals, Mr. Tillis and Marcus Betts began to have secret meetings with UIC and, in a power play, shut out the rest of the committee, including founder Paul Norrington. Despite many requests, Mr. Tillis and Mr. Betts refused to share information with the rest of the North Lawndale committee about their meetings with UIC and even used the committee name in publicity about meetings, when none of the other members of the committee were involved in the planning and presentations. Given these actions, it is not likely that Mr. Tillis will value resident involvement in future planning for North Lawndale.

Election Day is Tuesday. I encourage everyone to vote for the candidates of your choice. Make sure you do your homework. Look at candidates' track records, histories and associations. Birds of a feather flock together. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, believe me, it's a duck. No amount of smooth talk, slick campaign literature or billboards can change that. I don't know about you, but, I want to see our ward and city run by eagles and not turkeys or chickens.

As for me, I will not be voting for any candidates who want to run the ward like a business. Candidates who say that often don't know how government works and can't necessarily translate lessons learned from the business world to politics if they tried. We need look no further than Rahm, Rauner and charter school operators to see where running government like businesses gets us for our state and city governments and many of our local charter schools. Government, by definition, can never be a business.

There are also rumors of illegal electioneering. I will not be voting for any candidates that are rumored to be engaging in illicit electioneering tactics or divisive politics or intimidation of voters and other candidates. People don't change because they are elected. They just become amplified versions of who they are, for better or for worse, and the electorate has to deal with the consequences. Please, use your vote wisely.

The debate just seems like it would have been an excellent idea following the last run off election between Chandler and Dixon. If I remember correctly we had a field of 18 candidates and if we could somehow limit that field earlier we might get people to focus on real approaches to issues and not be so distracted by personality. Even this year it seems as if all the candidates are saying the same thing and not sure if that is a strategy or just trying to hold par and hope they appeal to the few that really go out and vote. I mean we all know school, crime, and unemployment are the big issues but, strategy and tactical approach needs to be realistic and diligent.

Why doesn't the government promote urban renewal as it has done in many neighborhoods? Safety is a primary requisite for neighborhoods to get better.

I do not oppose of anyone making money it's a tool for survival. But what I do have a problem with is that they think that it's ok to put me and my family in harms way. Via hiding drugs on or around my property, up yelling (ya'ya) ALL night long keeping me from getting my proper rest so that I'm able to function the next day at work or having random shoot out.

With the proper tools they can help the community thrive in the right direction and not continue to tear it down.
Just for the record I fault EVERYONE.
