Should we ask Dr. Amara Enyia to run for 28th Ward Alderman in 4 years?

I'm a little disappointed that Dr. Amara Enyia decided to try her hand at running for Mayor instead for 28th Ward Alderman. However, It's none of my business and I congratulate her and think she's great!

I realize that was sort of a selfish statement but we're drowning in the middle of an ocean and I felt the great Doctor steered the boat past us, to grab a life jacket from shore before returning out to sea to rescue us....

I realize that was sort of a selfish statement but we're drowning in the middle of an ocean and I felt the great Doctor steered the boat past us, to grab a life jacket from shore before returning out to sea to rescue us. It was a missed opportunity. We need help now.

In the unfortunate event that Jason Ervin is re-elected Alderman for the 28th ward, would it be disrespectful to ask/push Dr. Amara Enyia to consider a run for Alderman instead of Mayor in 4 years? Or, is it legal for her to be a write-in during this years election? If she campaigned as a write-in candidate, I think she'd still win because she has name recognition and financial backing.

Let's face it, if Jason Ervin is Alderman over the next 4 years, our ward will look exactly the same in 4 years as it does today. If not worse, in many ways. If there's one person who's guaranteed to beat Jason Ervin, that person is the great Dr. Amara Enyia.

If Detroit can bounce back....WHY NOT ....us????

Bankruptcy is bringing Detroit back. Why haven't politicians brought back the south and west sides?

Something is really wrong.

Anybody with thoughts please contribute.

On September 4, 2008, Kilpatrick announced his resignation as mayor. Detroiters didn't wake up for YEARS after Kwame committed his crimes. To throw a blanket statement out there that Detroiters have more pride than Chicagoans is ill-informed and obviously wrong. It's like comparing apples and oranges. We have 2 totally different economies and histories. Why even compare Detroit to Chicago at ALL? Serves no purpose. There's a reason you're here in Chicago and not Detroit, obviously. I truly hope Detroit bounces back, but they have a long road ahead. Read this article from last year: http://money.cnn.com/2013/07/19/news/economy/detroit-streetlights-police/

I'm not understanding the relationship between what was essentially a municipal bankruptcy in Detroit and the economic struggles of the neighborhoods mentioned. What's similar Is that both Detroit, Chicago and also Gary Indiana lost tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs when the steel mills closed. What saved much of Chicago was a shift to a different economic base of financial institutions and now a growing technology sector both of which require higher levels of educational training or degrees vs a high school diploma. I'd argue that another factor is that where manufacturing is growing is in so called right to work states. There's a reason why BMW chose to locate in SC vs the Midwest. Politicians or government can do little to create jobs within state or municipal borders in spite of their promises to do so. Whether right or wrong corporations are going to locate where it serves their best interest based on cost of doing business and the available talent they need to compete against others.

Charter Schools and Politics

I got this from my friend Alonso Zaragoza:

"One of my friends is a parent of a child in a Noble Charter school and on the parent committee for the school. She said that Stand For Children has been going to the school recruiting parents to work on the Mayor's campaign telling people that If the Mayor loses, their charter school will be closed. Adding my two cents: Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner is the Chairman of the Board for the Nobel Charter Schools. He was instrumental in providing the funds for Stand for Children to come to Chicago to provide advocacy for school reform, which for the most part has been pro-charter. Stand for Children is a tax exempt, 501 (c) (3) organization. They should NOT be engaged in partisan politics. Unless they have a political action arm, they could be jeopardizing their tax exempt status by supporting the Mayor and specific pro-charter candidates.

Regardless, this sets a terrible precedent--having publicly-funded schools being used as part of a political apparatus.

Chicago Mayoral, 24th Ward Candidates Court West Side Voters At Local Forum

Chicago aldermanic hopefuls running in the West Side's crowded 24th Ward race made their pitch to voters at a Tuesday night candidate forum, with many vowing to, if elected, boost employment and economic opportunities in the North Lawndale community.

Eight of the 12 candidates vying to replace retiring Ald. Michael Chandler (24th), who announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election, attended the forum, held at One Way Baptist Church, 4152 W. 16th St.

Mayoral candidates Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and community activist William 'Dock' Walls also made brief remarks at the event, attended by about 50 people. I actually live in 28/24 (that set of blocks north of 290 around Kostner). Our voter cards say 28, but our city of Chicago still has us listed in 24 I guess until the new ward map kicks in? Its a shame because our block and the surrounding area is still terrible even though its technically represented by 2 alderman. I'm interest in both these races because my son goes to elementary school in 24.

The sheer number of candidates in both 24 and 28 is indicative that something needs to change. I'm not in love with any of the candidates or know much about them, and the race is 8 weeks away? Does anyone knock on doors anymore?

As we submitted our bid, I reflected on our first Facebook post, made on our newly created group, Westside Presidential Library. (We have since moved to the North Lawndale Presidential Library page). As we focus our efforts on community outreach and engagement, I would like to share it again. I am truly amazed at how a “pipe dream” is on the precipice of becoming a reality. Should the criteria for scrutinizing Candidates be investigated? Many are saying that the blanket practice of listing 25 standard objections just to bounce opponents off the ballot is COMMON practice.

If that is a political tool that deprives Chicagoans of a true Democratic process then somebody needs to come and INVESTIGATE the practices. Then the citizens need to make a legislative amendment to protect citizens from this sort of candidate bias.

What do you think? Say something.

Due to gerrymandered wards and a high number of renters, many of these signatures were from people not in the ward or not registered at their current address.

Still, I have 438 signatures from registered voters in the ward and now need to collect affidavits from at least 35 citizens (out of approximately 100) whose signatures were too illegible to match to their voter card. In Chicago, this is what democracy looks like.

Some factors to take into consideration is to have an honest reflection on whether you can be a responsible gun owner. By responsible I mean someone who is very careful with firearms and doesn't treat them like toys. Someone who has extensive training and is comfortable handling a firearm and very importantly someone who has the disposition to use it if confronted with great bodily.

As we work towards an Alderman worthy of enough to represent our area, we also want to assist each other too. During the course of the meeting, we proposed reopening the Chamber of Commerce and hopefully partnering with Ms. King with some ideas on how we can move forward.

Again, if anyone has or knows Ms. King whose office was located at 3439 West Madison, please have her respond to the website. Otherwise the business owners in the area will have to start over from scratch.

Still No "Serious" Contenders for 28th Ward Alderman?

It's getting close and I'm still waiting to see if anyone is seriously going to throw their hat in the ring to run against Alderman Jason Ervin? It looks as though he's an easy shoe-in at this time.

I don't think I can take another 4 years looking at the filth, trash and living in the city's most under served ward. So many of the residents work so hard to keep their properties looking nice, when the city/ward sits back and does absolutely nothing to support the "do-gooders."

Please give me some good news someone!

If the 28th ward candidates do not work together to eject Ervin, your crime will increase, property values decrease, the garbage ,ruin and blight will increase, and your population will decrease. The 28th ward will retain the city's highest crime and poverty rates.
I am moving back into the 28th ward in the Tri Taylor area. There is no way I could support Jason Ervin. There needs to be a inspector general and criminal investigation into his administration.
Let's stop talking and hit the streets the media the public and get rid of Jason Ervin.
I am going to be supplying evidence and proof as to why Ervin needs to go.

When will Streets and Sanitation adopt this as a city wide program?

It only took 2 years. That is pretty FAST for Chicago politics.

Bloomberg used it in NYC train stations after Sandy. It works. Search on the internet and you can find out the whole story. It is a great example of PROBLEM SOLVING in a new, more efficient, and cost expedient way.

This is too exciting for words. It is hard to sit still and keep the fingers on the keyboard!!!

Actually it took 1 yr 5 months to get this in the system! That is pretty darn fast. That is what happens when feedback travels up a channel...and PROBLEM SOLVERS pick it up.

We should keep a tally of how much the rodent population is reduced. They probably also need this for feral cats.

Perhaps we should send it over to animal control also.

George gave gay waiters a job way before the Gay Pride Parade was even a concept. Many earned good livings, were able to be creative in their jobs, and could live very very well because of the jobs he provided for them.

He had peers and rivals Gordon Sinclair, Rich Melnan, the Levis...it was alot of fun in those days the early 70s as Chicago restauranteurs changed what dining out meant to the public.

This is a tribute to a man who helped Chicagoans become acquainted with all kinds of dishes. He loved food and wine his whole life.

So I don't know if others feel the same, but whether you do or not, it would be good to have a list of businesses that are worth supporting. So if you know of a good place to spend money locally, let us all know.

The University of Illinois at Chicago has partnered with the North Lawndale community to submit a bid to build the Obama Presidential Library on the West Side of Chicago. Two sites are being considered—one on the UIC campus and the other in North Lawndale, on the corner of Roosevelt and Kostner. We have conducted an informal survey of Westside stakeholders to get a sense for the level of support for the Proposed Obama Presidential Library in North Lawndale. Surveys were sent by email, and posted on our Facebook and Twitter accounts, through a town hall meeting and on our website. Some of the same people who received the messages through social media were also in attendance at the town hall meeting. We collected responses from Thursday, December 4, 2014 until Wednesday, December 10, 2014. A total of 37 people responded as of 10:48 a.m. on December 10, 2014. Respondents include Westside residents, business owners, school administrators and representatives of organizations. We thank everyone who has taken the time to respond. Results are found at http://northlawndalepresidentiallibrary.org/2014/12/11/survey-results-are-in/

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

i am particularly moved by the comment from one of the Sumner Elementary students who said that he wanted to see the Presidential Library across the street from his school so he would not have to see all of that trash and debris. He's got my attention and I am going by the school to introduce myself to him with the purpose of helping to fulfill that wish of cleaning up the garbage.

Our Individual kindnes to others

Hey, how bout if the EB people post what they do to be kind to others and strangers on a regular basis? We can share ideas and talk about them. This could be really interesting.

I am kinda fast, I crochet on the bus to and from work and after work while the TV watches me; it's very relaxing.

I have been on the westside my entire life and have only been in Jimmy's Gs once (last summer). I am never out past 8p.m. unless I am stuck at work and I am on public transportation. I will keep this in mind though.

Jimmy Gs' has great wings and fries cheap. You can go in the daytime, ask for Jimmy or his wife. If they are not there ask for the manager. Just tell them what you are trying to do and they can help you. Just say you know another lady who does it.

Ask your alderman to SUPPORT THIS on Wednesday

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-loitering-ordinance-met-20141208-story.html

Apparently it is on the table to go after PROBLEM BUSINESSES in a community and hold them accountable for the bad behavior of patrons.

This would be good for us! In the situation that a business caters to gang and drug people and other undesirables that are a magnet for crime and loiter, throw debris, throw drug needles and parapernelia, rob, deficate...and the list goes on.

Email your alderman and the Mayor and ask them to support this ordinance.

check for your aldermans' email address!

Its so sad how complacent our neighbors have become. They complain to each other but won't take any action, not even to admonish kids and passers by on the blocks not to throw trash on the street where they live.

That's why bs has been allowed to go on for so long, because no-one ever says anything, and are not willing to hold those who are supposed be in charge responsible for doing their job.

I got plenty of things to do all day, but I always got time to report an issue to CPD and the alderman. I just wish my neighbors felt the same way. I pay taxes where I live, and refuse to let those who don't dictate where I'm able to comfortably go.

The biggest mistake a ward person can make is going back to the same people who do NOT provide the service month after month, year after year, decade after decade, ...until 4 decades pass.

There is so much waste in City government and City Hall lets employees and vendors get away with it!!! That is why we are as bankrupt as Detroit and Gary, Indiana...

What most likely will happen is Pensions will get cut like in Detroit. Many city vendors will not be paid. Once the slate is clear then if the same party is in control; they will do it all over again.

When will Chicagoans learn the DEMOCRATIC PROCESS requires changing partie when things are bad. We are supposed to swing from party to party until one gets it right.

    Oh boy...what will Rauner do?
