Landscaper Recommendation

Hey all,

My landlord is looking for recommendations for someone who can come out and do simple yard work (mow the lawn, trim the hedges, etc). Anyone have any recommendations? Nothing too fancy, but must be able to bring their own equipment.

  • Megan60622 Humbolt Park Resident

    Try MT Lawncare - they're great !

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

We've used Dynamic Landscaping for years - very reliable, reasonable prices, they do yard maintenance, storm cleanup, gutter cleaning, etc. 773-774-2447

  • Craig Coleman at (872) 600-7840 is who I use. Very happy with him.

Police Activity

Anyone know what was going on near Kedzie/Altgeld this morning? I saw 9 police cars outside of 2348-ish N. Kedzie while walking my dog around 7:45 this morning.

  • I counted seven cop cars about a block north of there at Albany and Kedzie at 8:30am.

  • Yeah my bad, it was 2448 Kedzie, not 2348.

  • huh. i live at kedzie/pierce and came home sunday at 4pm to find 2 unmarked + 3 marked police cars in front of my building. saw one guy cuffed and taken away. no idea what happened, or if is related to this.

Bogus parking ticket in Logan Square

I remember that day and I had no reason to be or park on California. There is no picture printed on the ticket or online that I can see and obviously I never got a hard copy on my windshield. I'm contesting..not sure if I'll get anywhere as the only proof I have is some text messages setting up to meet with my client at that time. I suppose she can vouch for me but not sure if that even has any weight. Anyone gotten a similar ticket lately? Just wondering if a cop is running around giving bogus tickets or if maybe my license plate number got transposed or something with the actual car at fault. Really frustrating!

  • we, the citizens, did not get to vote for or against the 'new privatized' parking meters.

WE the Voters elected those who APPROVED the privatized meters. Every bad anti citizen protocol that happens occurs because we voted in the wrong person/part OR we didn't vote at all. One parety rule for more than 50 years is not a democracy. especial with the stats of Illinois and Chicago being so bad.

Blue Can - Recycle Service

A quick neighborhood survey: How often does the blue cans get emptied in your neck of the woods?

As of late it's been erratic in my neighborhood--sometime up to takes 3 weeks to get collected. I call 311 and I am impressed that it gets picked up within a day or 2. Does anyone have insight why they don't come on a weekly basis? And how it can be set up to do so?

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

Ours consistently comes every other Friday morning. They are starting to crack down on recycling that contains garbage/food. This week, they put orange stickers on blue carts that contained garbage items and did not empty them.

My neighbor was one of the stickered/rejected blue carts, so he took his garbage out of his blue cart and placed it in my blue cart, instead of the garbage cart. So I picked through his dirty wet napkins, meat scraps, bread and refried beans to clean up my cart! Gross.

Also, they also want the recyclables tossed in the blue carts loose (instead of in plastic bags), but many are still using plastic bags.

Take a photo. Send the photo to S&S and ask that a ticket be issued. We had a problem neighbor who for 10 years had 35 feet by 35 feet of garbage for 1/3 of the year. Lets see...100 days x 10 years is 1000 days of out of control...

I sent 400 photos to Patricia J. When the hearing officer saw 12 time series over several seasons to show my lot is tended well....the hearing officer said why...why...do you have so many photos. I explained that I get retaliation because of complaining about service....he said CASE DISMISSED.

So garbage tickets are POLITICAL. It is the Chicago way.

gunshots

Did anyone hear gunshots near Addison and Lawndale at about 5 a.m. on Thursday (9/18) morning?

  • Tom G Living in Avondale since 1994

I live two blocks away and didn't hear it, but my windows were closed. I posted earlier about a dozen shots I heard Monday at 1:30 am. I partially agree with JeffW that this is part of living in Chicago, but if things are heating up around here it's good to report them so that the cops pay extra attention. Imagine a city without guns.

  • PBB

Oh, I agree. I always try to be careful. Just kind of scary to be woken up by gunshots at 5 in the morning. Be safe everyone!

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

  • Gerry60647 Logan Square

I am actually in search for the sane project on my roof and haven't had much luck.. If anything comes up I'll make sure to pass on the info.

  • Thanks so much, Gerry! I will do the same as well.

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

Just a heads up, hopefully she wasn't too far from home! :(

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

Donation pick-up?

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). Anybody know of anything? If not I guess I resort back to Free Stuff (and accompanying flakes) on CL and the Mysterious Alley People and forgo my tax deductions.

  • LD

thanks all - lots of options offered, maybe I donate stuff and get a tax break w/out much effort after all :)

  • I second donating to Howard Brown's "The Brown Elephant". They are a great organization here in Chicago.

My car was stolen this afternoon. I ran out of gas while making a left turn onto California from Logan. Two kind people helped stop traffic and push me to the north side of California, across the street from the Starbucks. It was a large black man and a small black woman who helped me push the car. They checked that I had help and left me. I immediately started walking south to the gas station on Fullerton and California. I was gone about ten minutes. When I returned it was gone, though a hubcap was still on the sidewalk.

The person I talked to at the police station said that it is likely that someone perhaps with a tow truck saw it was broken down and took it. It would have been very hard to get gas for it and steal it in the time I was gone. I do have all the keys.

If anyone was in the area at the time or saw anything suspicious, please let me know. Thank you so much.

  • I have to admit..I really liked this thread...it started out for me 'OH NO!!!!' and now it is a good ending and a great story...

  • My friends have agreed that this would make a really corny plot for a badly written sitcom. Glad my good fortune and good neighbors also happens to be so entertaining!

I had to explain it to the police officers today, to cancel my police report. They only laughed at me a little.

The neighborhood does need more studios and one bedroom apartments. It is still easy (now) to find an affordable place to live if you have two people but if it is just you, the options are really limited. Not sure if the new construction is going to address that or if their prices will be really high for these one bedrooms but there are very few one bedrooms in this neighborhood in general.

While I think it makes sense that the mega mall needs to go, I am also a renter and wonder how it will affect me once we start getting more retail, which the neighborhood needs unless you shop just at thrift stores or Shop and Save type of places. I also am pretty far from the Mega Mall though as well, so I don't think it would even affect me all that soon. Plus, my friend works at a big architecture firm that was asked to do a mock up for it possibly, and she said it would take 4-5 years anyway to be open for business for such a big project, especially if they have to build a parking deck.

  • Thanks for the correction, Anton Cermak. Whatever it is, it looks like phoney and cheap closeup.

Hi All - I just wanted to make everyone aware of a new business in the neighborhood that is a great resource for the community of Logan Square. Five Point Holistic Health is a community acupuncture clinic located on Fullerton just west of Kedzie that opened in May of 2014. I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

  • I can't speculate on how the practitioners at this particular clinic will address lower back pain, however in my experience all back pain can effectively be treated in a reclining chair with points other than those on the back (and without needing to disrobe at all), so a community type treatment could certainly work.

Thanks, Jill. My degenerated discs are L4/L5 and they're pretty bad (genetic and 8 years of year-round volleyball are to thank). I've had some excellent deep tissue massages and I've had enough physical therapy to know exactly what stretches to incorporate into my daily work outs but when discs are degenerated so severely, very little will help a certain type of pain. Thankfully, that level of pain isn't around daily but if I can find a holistic preventative measure in addition to the yoga, swimming, stretching, etc. then I'm all for it. I'm not opposed to private or group, which ever will deliver the best results. Thanks again, guys.

Sawyer/wrightwood street lights out STILL??

Okay maybe someone posted about this already. It's been I feel a couple weeks now that the street lights have been out on Sawyer between Atlgeld and Wrightwood. Now I don't come home late at night often but when I do I certainly don't feel safe not being able to have a well lit safe street to park and walk on. I already called the aldermans about this. Anyone hear anything????

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

Call your alderman. With I'd usual stunning foresight, the city did not hook 311 directly into Streets and Sanitation (the people who change streeights, fill potholes, paint over graffiti...) and it takes quite a while for 311 to get their paperwork over to S&S. Your alderman, however, can dispatch a S&S crew immediately to handle the issue.

  • I put in a 311 request but when I go to check the status it says the ticket doesn't exist. =\

They are out beyond Altgeld-Wrightwood as well, at least 2400-2600 and possibly further south, I didn't wander around in the dark to check.

It should be allowed IMH as long as it's a person and not a huge realtor/rental agency. There are often posts for people looking exactly for this on EB (as well as good places to eat, drink, do on weekends, etc.). As a landlord myself I often think about posting here (my tenants are thankfully long term so I haven't yet had the need). Perhaps this should be something that could be allowed the future.

  • IF EB is not removing the post then it is ok..........its is the housing section after all. Does it matter who post? This is site owned my a MAJOR corporation all we provide for free is data. Don't listen to these "hall monitors" on EB with nothing to do.

I swim there occasionally--when you buy a park district lap swim pass, it's good at all of their pools. Compared to the other park district pools I've swam at, I'd say Koz has less than the average amenities but is still adequate. There are no lane lines, and there's no sink or mirror or hand dryers/paper towels in the locker room. So if you go to the bathroom you have to wash your hands in the shower and dry your hands on your own towel. Forget about styling your hair or drying it. Not the end of the world, but not ideal either. The lack of lane lines has always unnerved me, and it seems like it would be a problem if the pool was really full, but I've never actually seen it get really full so maybe it's just not an issue. It's typically filled with more casual swimmers rather than competitive ones.

And yeah, many of the park district locations do not update their schedules online promptly so it's always best to verify all the info you need to know while you're actually at the pool, especially around holidays or seasons changing.

The first time I went, I was very confused about the layout--you walk straight ahead until you're actually inside the pool room, then show the lifeguard your lap swim pass, then proceed to the right for the women's locker room. (Most places you go in the locker room first.)

  • I used to swim at this Park District pool years ago and it was free. All Park District pools were free.

I am really interested in pairing my wardrobe down to what is called a "capsule wardrobe" (i.e. around 30 clothing items that can be mixed and matched in stylish ways for fall/winter). Does anyone know of any affordable stylists/organizers who could help me with this task?

I am really interested in pairing my wardrobe down to what is called a "capsule wardrobe" (i.e. around 30 clothing items that can be mixed and matched in stylish ways for fall/winter). Does anyone know of any affordable stylists/organizers who could help me with this task?

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

Ericka I've been on the becoming minimilalist site for 5 minutes and already want to adopt all his ideas, even reading it is "freeing". Thank you!

  • the minimalists are good too for an overall POV. and they have a meetup/facebook group that just formed here. maybe it could be a shared group exercise.

Paper Shredding

My coworker said that sometimes her neighborhood has a paper shredding event. Does anyone know if Logan Square does this or has done this in the past?

I am looking to shred some paper. A lot of paper. :)

Thanks!
