Van burglarized Near Onahan

NORWOOD PaRK: Last night or early this morning- we think sometime after 5:30AM my husbands van was burglarized. The drivers side door was busted in. They stole over $5,000 in tools. Did anyone else have their car broken into in this area? Or anyone see anything suspicious? We love near Nagle and Raven

  • Tess 5200 North Mobile

I am hoping people will keep their eyes open and CALL 911 as soon as they see something suspicious. Or a car that looks like this and the driver or passengers look like they are up to no good.

  • Sorry to hear about that Tess. I hope you find some leads.

Zumba & fitness classes

Five star fitness!

Fly Girl Dance, located on Northwest Hwy in Norwood Park, opened a few months ago. From my first visit I've been hooked. Kim, Mike and Shivani lead great energizing Zumba classes. I'd recommend them to anyone interested in aerobic dance! Check out the schedule on their website. Next Wednesday, there is a free class for Halloween (registration required). I think first timers might get a free pass too. Or contact me I have a couple to spare :)

Speed Camera

I just got a notice of a speeding ticket. Never knew that a camera existed at 5739 N. Northwest Highway.
Be careful at this location.

  • JoeRavo Lifelong CLVN

Yes Nick, the speed cameras also flash.

  • Marly n Me Neighborhood Watch

I also received a warning last week. I never saw a flash. I knew about the one down NW Hway, closer to Mo Dailey's, but never noticed the one across the street from the Storage Place. They only give warnings the first month, then they issue tickets. I doubt even if O'C goes away they will ever take them down, it's a good money maker for the city. And it does make you slow down and watch for children.

Woman going door to door

A young African American woman rang my door bell around 5:30 today. She was wearing a red poncho. I'm not sure what she wanted. I don't open my door to strangers.

  • Adults also dress up for Halloween not just the kids!

  • Yes I answer the door oh Halloween. That doesn't have anything to do with my original post.

Now who will face Rahm?

Karen bowing out to heal from her brain surgery means Rahm just won another election. Can we start a betting pool? What will total voter turnout % be and how much will Rahm win by? We need to liven up this board!

  • @Rob...then why mention it? About 98% of all political workers in Chicago align with one or another sub tribe of the Democratic Party. So when you want to throw a barb you have to be much more precise or the affiliation is meaningless. BTW, in a parallel speech affectation foregoing the adjectival form, you could say there are almost no Republic workers. Which wouldn't be helpful without describing a sub tribal affiliation like RINO, Regular, or Tea Party

  • joanie Resident of Jefferson Park

Rob the elderly who want assistance going to the polls are identified during campaign canvasses assessing support strength. I've brought elderly to the polls in the past too. I've had a few surprises too, like a couple little old ladies who pulled Republican ballots after being given a ride claiming to support a particular Democratic candidate. It's all in a days work. Many of these senior citizens wouldn't be able to vote without being given a ride to the polls.

Bathroom and Kitchen Flooring

I'm looking to tile my bathroom floor and do my kitchen floor as well.
Can anyone recommend someone that’s reasonably priced and reliable.

  • Hi, my favorite contractor is David Pikor, I forget the name of his company, but he has always done excellent work for me, he is a little slow, but taking his time means he is doing the job well and not cutting corners, so I don't mind. His number is (773)491-1743. He has done my bathroom, and basement remodeling, and his prices are very reasonable. Good luck!!!

  • Nancy Neighbor

Thank you for the referral Giselle. I checked out his work and it looks great, but how are his prices?

Fox Sighting

Saw a red fox yesterday around 5:40PM on the side of the Kennedy, before the Bryn Mawr exit, in the grassy area. It was preying on a small rodent that looked like a rabbit. I've heard of coyote sightings but never a fox. Has anyone else spotted a fox before? If so, should it be reported to animal control?

  • I saw the same fox on the north side of the Kennedy yesterday a little after 5:00 P.M., meandering westward on the grass next to the highway. Right out in the open, very pretty, but now I am worried about my cat which is an indoor/outdoor cat!!

  • There has been a red fox in the neighborhood for years. Not sure if it's the same one, but I have seen one wandering around in the morning while the kids are heading to school. I've also seen a coyote. It's probably a good idea to keep an eye on your pets.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Norwood Park

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Norwood Park think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:
http://w11.zetaboards.com/InsideNextdoor/topic/10057749/2/#new

For those who are not familiar with ND, but curious, here's an invite link:

  • cbuzz lifelong resident

Just joined Nextdoor today and I, so far, like it. A lot less infighting and bullying. More to the point. Thanks for the connection.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

There might be less "infighting and bullying" but as a result of more censorship there is less creativity, transparency and input... which gives EB, a big advantage/plus. ND allows self appointed "Leads" to apply draconian measures which results in very restricted dialogues. ie Pleasantville http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120789/

AIrplane noise meeting

Please try to attend the ONCC meeting tomorrow at 8 AM in Rosemont. Details attached. They procured a larger space, so there should be room for all of us. Whether or not the ONCC is or can be effective, the media and Mayor Emanuel pay attention to the turnout and statistics. Thousands of people are impacted by the new runway patterns, so let's get a sizable showing tomorrow!

By 2020 the City is projecting 1.1 million flights over your head per year. Stand up now or the airport will continue to destroy our neighborhood .
