Logan Square daycare?

Any recommendations on daycare in Logan Square for an infant? Any experience with long wait lists?

  • Educational bilingual on St. Louis. Run by carmenza. We love it!

  • I confirmed my account just to reply to this. Check out A-Karresel on Kedzie. It's an older facility but the staff are wonderful. Not sure on waitlist, just give them a call.

Parson's new addition

Just thought some might like to see the addition at Parson's. To allow more seating in the winter.

  • It's a bummer M Fishman is an investor/owner.

  • Why's that Caitlin? Fishman did a great job on the Logan Theater and this spot. I hope he invests more in new neighborhood eateries, especially when they take the place of neglected properties (like the Parson's spot...which hasn't had a successful tenant in years if not decades).

Loud construction

Do I have any say over the noise going on next door while they gut rehab a 2 flat grey stone? They are dropping doors from second stories onto the ground! We have a small child that needs to sleep during the day so I'm dreading the next couple of months.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Unless they don't have a permit or are working outside of the allowed hours, you have to wait it out.

Chicago Al - our neighborhood of new homes and massive additions have increased our property taxes.

  • So long as they have the permits, you're on the losing side of this battle.

I went to the business meeting about the Mega Mall redevelopment, and nothing is written in stone, but the proposal was for: a 40,000 sq ft supermarket at the Sacramento end of Milwaukee with two stories of parking above and a two store gym over that. The rest of the block with be residential (approx 200 rental units) with retail on the first floor. It will appear to be 5-6 separate building from the outside with some set backs. There will be a new traffic light in the middle of the block for cars to turn into the parking lot. Truck traffic in the back. 20 ft sidewalks in front. 10% affordable housing and they said no TIF funds would be use (I would love to see that). The buildings will vary for approx. 7 to 9 stories. Those were the features I found most interesting but there was more.
That was the proposal. Call Alderman Waguespack or wait for the public meetings that are coming.

  • That public meeting should be interesting! Logan Square seems set on no buildings over 4 or 5 stories....with 6 really pushing it.

Something told him to buy the dog as he looked well taken care of and this good guy's daughter saw Bentley's lost post on Lost Dogs Illinois facebook page and they called the family. Building on an existing foundation allows a builder to keep the orginal footprint of the house. Often a builder wants to do this to build a bigger house. Various zoning laws in Chicago require new construction to be set back several feet from neighboring lot lines, often resulting in the new house having less square feet than a renovated house built on the existing foundation. Usually, the footprint of any existing building is grandfathered in, zoning-wise, and a builder doesn't need to comply with set back rules.

Township is open for business and continues to serve brunches everyday of the week as well as dinner service each night. We are currently in the process of giving the place a much needed sprucing up. To do that, we are running a shorter schedule for a few Mondays and Tuesday evening service. We also plan to begin shows by month's end.

Township has retained 90% of the staff. Not a single person was terminated and there isn't one new hire. Since we are running on a short schedule, we scheduled staff based on seniority. We hope to bring the rest of the staff back as we add to the schedule and begin doing shows.

Rather than look into the past and maligning people, we are focused and excited about what lies ahead. We look forward to being part of a community that supports small businesses like no other community in the city. We appreciate your patience and promise that all the wait will be worth what we have in store for you.

Live-In Nanny Needed

Hello - we are seeking a live-in nanny for our 2yo & 5yo. We live in Roscoe Village. The ideal candidate will have a friendly and positive attitude; be willing to help with all aspects of household management; and have flexibility re. work times and hours. Primary assistance is needed Mon-Fri., so it's okay if the nanny has somewhere else to live/stay on the weekends. MUST have a driver's license and excellent references. Spanish-speaking okay.

  • I have a perfect candidate. She just arrived from Boston and she worked as a nanny there. The parents of the children say they haven't found a better nanny as her, she is wonderful with children. How can I get a hold of you?

  • Hi! I just sent you an email by clicking on your name on Everyblock. You should be able to directly email me as well the same way. Or I think there's a little envelope on my original post where you can directly email me as well.

    Thanks!

  • Scott Scott in Bucktown

I also have a possible candidate if that doesn't work. My contractor's wife was a nanny and just lost her job because the family moved. She is Peruvian but speaks English. Please message me if you're interested. I can put you in contact.

I'm having trouble finding one that is currently accepting new patients. My insurance is Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Aldona - You still need to confirm with the practice that they will accept your specific plan. At the practice I work for, we have a handful of patients a month who think that we are in their medical network, and are not.

Another consideration - if you have a very high deductible, will the practice work with your budget?

  • Right Robin. While shopping for insurance I learned that just because it's BCBS, it doesn't mean that your Drs accept the plan. Lower cost plans equal lower tier hospitals/practices. It's always good to double check, but the website should be pretty accurate, especially if you put in your group number and ID.

I unfortunately am one of those homeless people who live under that bridge. I mean no harm to anyone especially the people who reside there on Kedzie and on sawyer. I would like to tell anyone who is interested that we do not want to be there anymore that you want us there. We mean no harm and we try to respect the community and all the people who pass through on a daily basis. Don't be scared of us. Try to keep an open mind. Notice that when you do pass through that we try very hard to keep it as clean as we can, we usually don't speak unless spoken to, and we never ask for anything. Some of deal with mental illness others have drug and alcohol problems but there are some of us who are very down on our luck with no family or place to go. If anyone would just reach out and ask they would know that we are harmless and we are just as afraid as you are remember we are there all night. We are alone we are treated as if we are not human and sometimes invisible as if this is what we really want sometimes people think the answer is as simple as getting a job which is a real challenge when you cannot keep your hygiene up, get proper rest and have no way to get back and forth imagine how frightening it is to go out all day and look for a job come back and find that the little bit you own has been discarded by the city. For just a minute put yourself in our shoes and maybe do for us what you would want someone to do for you if you were in our position. It absolutely is not as easy as it sounds.

  • Awesome, Sharon, thanks. I'll make it a priority this week!

TRIBUNE: Fate of STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK signs

TRIBUNE transportation reporter Jon Hilkevitch has article in 11/24/2014 Monday Getting Around column that mentions Logan Square.

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:
1. in street mounted signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK are visual cue that enhances Pedestrian Safety. Milwaukee Ave location has 25,000 vehicles/day AND is heavily used by pedestrians day & evening on City designated PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET in heart of vibrant Logan Square business district.
2. signs are intrinsically subject to wear/damage and getting plowed over by (idiot) drivers
3. CDOT/City annual budget should anticipate replacement cost for these signs, like replacement of Stop, Tow Zone, No Parking etc which come from City budget, not Alderman ward menu funds
4. Red Light and Schools/Parks cameras bring in ~$100,000,000 per yr. It's not Mayor Emanuel slush fund to plug police overtime etc. Public Safety & real leadership means: take some of that $ and pay to replace damaged signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK as needed.

The DUI KING of City Council, Alderman Rey Colon offered this comment in Tribune: "These signs are very popular with constituents who request them often," Colon said. But he said the average life of the signs "is like freshly cut flowers that wither and die."

Alderman: it's time for your political career to do the same.

  • I think those little buggers should grow by three feet, glow like a sci-fi show, and be made of METAL. That would teach people real fast to pay attention and stop running over the little neon man!

  • I dunno...Many people who hit those signs don't take care of their cars anyway, so adding some scratches to go with the speed holes and fart cans (mufflers) won't matter to them...

Christmas trees??

I finally live in an apartment with very tall ceilings and am very excited to have a nice, tall Christmas tree this year. Any suggestions for where I can go in the area to buy a tree this year??

  • Used to go to Gethsemane even though it was far (it was close to my mom's and we had a tradition of buying our trees together). For the past couple of years, I've gone to Christy Weber on Grand. Trees have held their needles well.

  • Thank you all for the tips!!!

Logan Square Blue Line Station

There were a couple of CTA workers standing just past the turnstiles that appeared to be randomly checking Ventra cards(?) this morning. The station seemed extra staffed this morning as well. Anyone know what's up?

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

There was a canine unit at the Howard L station Monday morning

  • They will also be swabbing random bags for explosives. You don't let them, you don 't get on.

Car vandalism

Keep your eyes on the streets. My car was vandalized while I was away on vacation. 2 passenger side wheels taken and the car put up on cinder blocks
Altgeld at Richmond. Nothing taken or other damage to the car that I know of.

  • It's so hard to get over the helpless and violated feeling when someone steals a part off your car. It's such an expensive thing to fix and most people have no choice but to use street parking and leave their car vulnerable. Myself included. I had my catalytic converter stolen at Belden and Kedzie just a month ago. Some people really suck.

Old Zacatecas restaurant on Richmond/Diversey

Seems like there is a lot of work happening on that building - the exterior was repainted, and the inside is getting gutted. Any ideas what's going to become of the space?

  • Susan S. resident

All reliable information no doubt! :-)

  • Now if only someone would move into that derelict property on Albany and Diversey. What an eyesore! Garbage cans always overflowing, a real rat haven. It's a good looking building and would make a nice restaurant.
