Electronic Billboards

Hi All-- Another electronic billboard went up this week at Armitage and Milwaukee. Everywhere they go up they dominate the intersection and make it look like a prison yard. The big ones on the highway wash out everything...Has this been an issue for anyone else? Is there a way to prevent the Las Vegas-ization of Chicago? At the least I'd like to see some kind of brightness limits on them. Has anyone started a campaign? Is it all futile?

Thanks

Swiffer, maybe you were able to pay for luxury hotels during all of your travels, but for some of us, me included, youth hostels provided a safe, clean, reliable and AFFORDABLE place to stay. I probably stayed at 25 of them in various countries, and I NEVER once saw prostitution, drug use, or crime. Sometimes the inner-city hostels were located in what might be considered seedy areas, and there was certainly nefarious activity in the surrounding areas, but that is hardly their fault or causation.

When staying at a hostel in the USA, there was a high probability that you would run into guests from other countries, speaking German, French, Spanish, etc. I had some really great conversations with complete strangers, especially in the kitchen/dining room areas where people often sit at communal tables and utilize a common food prep area.

These facilities were recycling over 20 years ago; some of my neighbors don't even use their blue carts.

If you know of a prostitution ring that recycles, I would like to know about it and offer a positive BBB report.

    Gee-zuz.

  • Lets stay focused...this thread wasn't meant to be a discussion on hostels

New Coffee Place & Bakery! (Sugar Hills Bakery)

Sugar Hills Chicago has opened at 3235 W. Addison over by the Chipotle. My husband & I stopped in & tried some sweets and they where very good & the coffee was AMAZING! The owners are very nice to boot. The neighborhood was missing a place like this since I moved to Addison and Kimball back in 2009. I am very glad they are here!

  • Great cookies and clean space and super friendly staff.

  • Lovely spot, no breads but breakfast sandwiches are yummy & I love the Mango Cake & the Strawberry Shortcake. Can't wait to try the liquor cake! :)

I was walking the other day and ran into this guy locking the door on the former Ecuanet/Honey I Forgot The Milk. I asked him if he was going to open a business there and he told me he just bought the building with his family and is going to restore it and have office or apartments upstairs and is hoping to rent the ground floor to a restaurant that will use both sides storefronts together. He seemed really nice and told me the car wash that was for sale for a long time on California was sold for cash to a developer and he was told a new building will be built there.

Radiators

Does anyone know where I could find old cast iron radiators? I'm looking for a small one to replace a monster radiator (see photo) I have in my kitchen which probably has been there for over 50 years doing a swell job but taking a lot of room.

  • You can also try Consumers plumbing, http://www.consumersplumbing.com/heating-usedradiators/ for used radiators. I needed to buy new radiators and got them from Castrads, https://www.castrads.com. They are in the UK but I got them in two weeks and they are awesome. I needed four of them in multiple sizes. In the end it cost me $4,500 US dollars, shipping included, as compared to a US company that quoted me $23,000 for similar radiators.

  • Absolutely consumer supply on lake street.....they will even buy your old one. Ours cost 100$. The best part is they test them for leaks.....and they have a very large selection so you may be able to match your exiting design.

For keeping up such an eyesore, how does the city and our fine alderman moreno reward them? Gives them permits for a two sided digital billboard so they can milk some more money out of the he property. Can we add some more illegal billboards to the house next door to make it the trifecta of bad neighbors?

Our neighbor, who is a very nice person, just informed me that some other people on the block have complained that our patch of grass near the curb (I believe it's called a parkway) has a bunch of brown spots from dog pee. She admitted that she thinks it looks bad, too. Our dog doesn't use the patch, but our tenants upstairs let their dogs use it and people walking their dogs will let them go there. She said that you can get fined by the city for this, which sounds absurd. Is this true? I guess my husband and I are in the minority, I keep a well manicured small front garden but don't really care much about the parkway other than keeping it mowed. We both work a lot and I'd rather focus on my back yard and garden. I guess my question is; how much should I care about what the neighbors say, and can you be fined? And I'd be willing to ask our tenants to go across the street to the park, but how am I supposed to keep other dogs from peeing there when I'm gone most of the day? She keeps people off of hers because she's home most of the day and can see when someone is outside.

Full disclosure: that same neighbor's husband mows our parkway for us. We have never asked him to do it and he just does it because he's a nice guy and he knows we only have a push mower. We have thanked him many times. So I'm not sure if there's a sense of entitlement going on there since they maintain it? We would be happy to mow it ourselves. They have lived here a long time and are very particular.

If we put up a fence, then that makes the grass much harder to mow, so then that would involve pulling up the grass and putting something else there which I don't have the desire to to. Also, I've heard that this patch is technically property of the city and could be torn up if they need to access a water main, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

That is gross and rude. agree that dogs will go where they will go but this neighbor pulls her dogs in front of the gate to make them go there and laughs. If she were civil she would pull them away from the front gate. I would never let my dogs do that and I would expect others not to do the same regardless if it is city sidewalk or our property. Something scary is that they both have professional job. They are acting like children.

  • You're totally right Confused, those people are ridiculous. I don't think dogs should go on sidewalks unless that's the only option. That's where everyone walks, no one should have to walk around rivers of pee, especially right in front of their gate.

Chicago Fire Filming Near Mozart/Dickens Tomorrow Night

Last time I was able to find a spot on Armitage, this time I'm in an area that isn't being used. Ridiculous amount of trash on my block.

I've noticed a ridiculous amount of trash on my block near Palmer and Kimball. In the grass, as well as the street. It really detracts from the area. Seems to be more right here than any other block in the neighborhood. Not sure, why, maybe it is due to the close proximity to a main thoroughfare, and bus stop? I'm going to start picking as much up as I can, and am hoping others will all contribute to keeping Logan Square beautiful. Everyone please do your part! Also are there any volunteer groups in the neighborhood that help pick up trash?

Dibs?

Just had to take a moment and post this hilarious pic of my neighborhood and my neighbor who refuses to remove their dibs.

They left them up last time til the city said they would remove, then they slid them to the side and their cardboard tv box has been trashing up the side of our street, now they have moved out the cones to save the already empty space ( they did no work to shovel, just claiming it).

  • Nope!

  • Derek In Avondale since 2009

Not surprising During some of our milder winters I've seen neighbors dibbing their spots during light rain.

MIddle Eastern Restuarant Musada

Wow, what ever happened to this place? And the fact that the sign is lit up? I wish I had the money to support Commonwealth Edison...

  • LovingLoganSquare Logan Square Homeowner Since 2005

It's my understanding that Masada in the process of slowly being built out here and there as the owners have money. There have been a few recent threads on EveryBlock where you can read a little more information.

Brindle pit bull loose -- Sacramento/Belmont

If you lost your brindle pitbull with cropped ears and an enormous chain collar he's around Sacramento and Belmont. He has a white head and brindle body. He's heading east down the alley east of Sacramento just south of Belmont north of Fletcher. He was limping and maybe injured.

I was taking my dog back from the emergency vet so I couldn't pick him up. I did report it to 911 & Animal Control.

  • ANeighboor

That the dog from 3133 N. Richmond st.

  • Blissful

The dog tends to jump the fence to the neighbors house and leave from the driveway gate. He knows how to get home on his own. They been looking for him and the person who posted it on Facebook isn't picking up nobody's calls, how rude! If you see him again please call George at 773-226-9432. Thank you!
