TIF funds and Rahm spending...

"As city Planning Commissioner Andrew Mooney puts it, "Particularly in this administration, TIF has gone to neighborhood infrastructure projects.

"Now, maybe the neighborhoods didn't need the money and it instead should go to, say, teacher pay hikes instead of a new Green Line el stop at Morgan Street, renovating the Logan Theater, rebuilding the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop or luring federal cash to the University of Illinois' new digital manufacturing lab. Let's have that debate.

"But enough of this whining about how TIF is just another form of welfare for rich people in high-rises. It just ain't so."

As you can see, Tom, Chuy's claim that downtown benefits from TIFs at the expense of the neighborhood is simply empty, unsubstantiated campaign rhetoric.

Thanks for clarification, and the Crain quotes, Joe. I did read all of the articles. I hope Crain is right and the Reader is wrong. If you and Crain's are correct, the TIF map sure paints an inaccurate view of reality. Many, many red dots downtown. Few dots in our ward.

    http://webapps.cityofchicago.org/ChicagoTif/

It Crain's is correct it would be in Rahm's interest to get the map up to date and accurate.

Shocking Video Shows Road Rage Battle on Chicago Street

This incident occurred on Morse Ave near IMoveChicago.
http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150325/rogers-park/shocking-video-shows-road-rage-battle-on-rogers-park-street
ROGERS PARK — With a nearby surveillance camera recording it all, two feuding drivers launched into a violent and extended battle on a Rogers Park street last week, with one driver repeatedly ramming the other's car while the second man delivered wild jump kicks and punches, according to police and the video.

For more than six minutes, the drivers went at it as bystanders — including a young girl on a scooter — looked on, according to the video obtained by DNAinfo Chicago. (more at link)

d3, as a former insurance agent, I just want to quickly say that when someone is involved in an accident for which they are not at fault, they don't suffer any repercussions in the form of inreased premiums. Even if you change insurance companies, the accident is reported to your motor vehicle report as being "not at fault" and you will not be charged a higher premium for that. Also, you really don't need anything more than the the other person's insurance info when involved in an accident. You don't need their registration info or their VIN. The insurance companies have all that already.

Hi all,
I remember reading several months ago that Flaco's Tacos was going to open up a new location under the RedLine Tracks at the Granville stop. Haven't heard anything about this since, and there hasn't been much if any construction activity in the space. Does anybody know anything about this?

Hate to break it to you, but stuff like freshly roasted coffee, expertly crafted coffee drinks, responsibly sourced good ingredients, furniture, and wait-staff is labor-and-materials-intensive. Not everyone wants to walk up to and order from a menu board, or sit at a counter and eat and drink blah food and beverages made from supplies from low-quality generic bulk purveyors (or even from pushbutton machines), served (if at all) by grossly underpaid workers.

DK, this is true with the exception of Metropolis which has been around for a while but not as long as the convenience stores. Ann Sather's is relatively new and took over an established restaurant whose owner passed away, and M Henrettaa did not last too long and the space has been taken over by Revival. The Tai restaurant Summer has been there for quite a while and it is their second location. Pete's took over where a liquor and convenience store was located and since their opening, other establishments have been coming into the area. Have you thought about the fact that these establishments are not tacky but just cramming a lot of merchandise into such small spaces. I support any business that can maintain their existence for over five years and still stay in business. This is an accomplishment in itself as most small business usually fail within the first five years. So I say to you that with such diverse shopping choices you should not be negative towards any of them.

Water Bill for 2 Flat Home, urgent question!

Hello all, my father owns a 2 flat home, non metered account. His last bill was charged over $900 for 6 months. Does this sound about right?? (2 floors, $490 for water, $480 for sewer usage). We are trying to figure out what other homeowners are paying for 2 flat or 2 floor 25' homes. We are considering installing a meter, and most likely will

  • T&K

I called the water department. I was told I have a leaky toilet or faucet, and that it was recorded by the meter reader last September. I was never informed. The water department has a way of determining leaks, but no process in place to inform the owner of the finding. At least now I know and can do something about it. Thank you, neighbors!

  • Paco 50thWardFollies.com

How can the homeowner not be informed? "No process in place" means that the job of follow-up has not been specifically assigned. We can no longer expect workers to use common sense in things like this. Instead the city keeps the info on file in case the owner gets an unexpectedly large bill and calls about it. The city that works doesn't anymore.

The Howard Street Theatre Focus Group met on March 17 to discuss the steps needed to create a theater/performing arts space in the City of Evanston-owned properties in the 700 block of Howard Street in Evanston. The group convened at Peckish Pig, a restaurant and brewery located at 623 Howard St. in Evanston.
Focus group participants discussed the many strengths of the location, including excellent access to public transit; the opening in 2008 of a 221-unit apartment building just to the east; an award-winning restaurant and award-winning cocktail lounge just down the block; the increased vibrancy of the street; and its close proximity to Chicago.
Participants evaluated the properties available for theater use (717, 721-723 and 727-729 Howard St.), reviewed previous renderings and concepts for a theater on that block, and discussed the steps required to find a theatre company or companies that would thrive in this location.
Other issues addressed were who would manage and operate the space; the number of seats and their configuration; if an additional location should be considered for a cabaret to allow for comedy club and intimate live musical performances; and the timing to build the space and solicit users.
The group reported that the next steps will be as follows: clearly articulate the vision for Howard Street and the arts; convene a meeting with a group of theatres that might be interested in the space; go forth with a plan for the space to get funding; narrow down the list of people who can participate; and select a theatre group to enter a long-term lease from the City. Is this just some sort of purgatory where insane people argue about politics?

I don't get it. It's the same argument over and over and over and...well you get it. How about using this site to find out about local happenings and lost pets and stuff? Why does every post end up in some argument about the alderman or the mayor? I seen a couple good arguments that were productive but the majority is just a bunch of insane and repetitive drivel. Come on folks.

Crain's Chicago Business columnist, Greg Hinz, who got his start in Rogers Park as a reporter for the old Lerner News Star, just wrote an excellent piece on TIFs that debunks those myths and sets the record straight on TIFs.

It's must reading for anyone who wants a clear understanding of how TIFs operate and a reality check for those who see TIFs as some evil enterprise or view them as a panacea for solving our fiscal crisis.

It's a Follow Me on Friday twofer! This Friday evening, I will be hanging out at two businesses that just opened next door to each other--Pita Pit and BMO Harris Bank. They are occupying two of the three storefronts in Loyola University's new apartment building, located just steps from the Loyola Red Line station.

Join me this Friday, March 27th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at 6556-58 N. Sheridan. Grab a complimentary pita at Pita Pit and check out the fun, casual atmosphere at the chain's newest restaurant. Then head next door and enjoy some beer, wine and soft drinks courtesy of BMO Harris while exploring the bank's "smart" new features.

Pita Pit's manager, Manny Valdes (left), will make sure you are well taken care of with made-to-order pitas. It's a fresh, healthy alternative to fast food, which explains Pita Pit's motto: "fresh thinking, healthy eating."

At Pita Pit you will find more combinations of meats, veggies, cheeses and sauces than anywhere else. Manny claims Pita Pit offers "over a trillion possible pita combinations." Though that may be a tiny bit of an exaggeration, there's no question that Pita Pit's selection of ingredients is quite enormous.

After enjoying your pita, head next door for some drinks at the new BMO Harris Smart Branch (see photo below), where branch manager Jose Garcia will show you the bank's Mobile Cash system, a new technology that allows consumers to video chat with bank tellers and withdraw money from an ATM using their smartphone.

The card-less ATMs allow customers to prepare a transition before arriving to the bank. Users enter the amount they want withdrawn in the BMO Harris app, and then hold up the given QR code to the smartphone reader at the ATM to receive their funds. The transaction takes about 15 seconds, roughly a third of the time it takes for a card withdrawal.

Come see for yourself this amazing new technology.

I'm sure the staff at VCA on Devon are nice, but I would never take my pets to a VCA hospital. Their corporation is well-known in the veterinary community for "pushing" diagnostics & treatments because their DVMs have monthly quotas to meet to receive a commission. If they don't meet the quota, it gets rolled over to the next month, so some DVMs get quite desperate. Depending on the practice, there are other penalties as well for the DVM and/or the practice as a whole not meeting their quotas. VCAs tend to offer a lot of incentives to try to attract people in, but it's just not worth it.

  • It's a bit of a tragedy that Meisner-Holley became a VCA hospital. They were an absolutely fabulous vet office with a stellar reputation for many, many years before the last full-time doc who privately owned it retired and sold it. I used to love them. I didn't think they were awful after VCA bought the practice but I only went back a couple times after that and wasn't thrilled.

Good morning neighbors,

Around 4:20 AM on March 27th, shots were heard by Warren Park, near Arthur and Hamilton Avenues. These have come only ten days since the last incident, where several neighbors in the area saw/heard shots followed by a car leaving the scene.

So far, (thankfully) no injuries have been reported.

My whole family was abruptly awoken by the shots, which were very close to our building (we live right by one of the entrances to Warren Park). We did not see anything suspicious, but more than eight shots were clearly heard.

About eight minutes later, we saw police cars patrolling the area.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have lived in the same place for more than seven years and this is the first time that we have noticed an increase in such activity/occurrences.

I have attended past CAPS meetings and while the police do encourage for positive loitering group formation and community patrolling, only so much can be done when half of the neighborhood's residents are sound asleep.

I know many fellow neighbors begin their work day as early as 4:00 AM and I would hate to think that one of them gets hurt while these unnecessary acts of violence are taking place right outside our homes.

Has anyone else heard/seen anything suspicious during these past few weeks?

I am definitely attending the next CAPS meeting to find out what exactly is going on (hopefully police have some idea).

Greetings fellow West Rogers Park Neighbors,

This election has begun! April 7th is less than two weeks away but we are at the start of Early Voting.

While I urge each and everyone of you to go out and vote early for Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and urge friends and family to do the same, it is just as important to get out the vote in the surrounding NE region.

If you are a supporters, I ask each of you to contribute some volunteer time during Early Voting and on GOTV Weekend to help turnout supporters and bring undecided voters towards Chuy!

We are located at 1144 W Wilson Ave right across from Truman College. You can vote early there and stop by right across the street to volunteer!

Some suggestions below:

-Join us daily to speak to supporters to urge them to Early Vote using our Predictive Hub Dialing system.
-Join us the weekend of March 28/29 and April 4/5 to canvass the local neighborhoods or make phone calls.

While these are just suggestions, you can join us any day of the week from 10am-8pm!

Some of you have already committed time, some have yet not.

Please let us know:

Date(s) you can come in:
Time(s) on those days that you can come in:

Close to 90% voters in 37 wards voted in favor of an Elected School Board in February election.

    86% in wards 49 and 40. 83% in ward 50.

How is the mayoral appointed board doing? I think only Debra Quazzo and Magic Johnson think they are doing great.

Robin, I think that there might be validity to your statement. The caveat is that some are much worse than others.

Police activity on Morse

There's a lot of police activity on Morse near the old Morseland, and what looked like a couple of arrests. Does anyone know what happened?

  • Craig_Gernhardt Official Account

I got a photo of the "club" on the trunk of the Camry as it was parked on the sidewalk.

The "club" was definitely used as a weapon.

  • Very good!
BTW, I'm not "pro" anybody here. What makes me upset is this TOTAL victim thing. A "one side or other" mentality.
Though this IS a 2 party situation its NOT a 2 party system of vigilante justice?

Rahm or Chuy

I'm a life-long Chicagoan but this election has me torn. I voted for Rahm in the primary but not because I think he's a great mayor. But Chuy remains a man of mystery to me and seems more like a rerun of Eugene (Sleepy) Sawyer than the next Harold Washington. Can I get a straw vote and rationale on the issues?

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 50 + years

Attempts to paint Chuy as a party line follower are simply pitiful. He began his political career as an ally in the Washington administration, and he has such anti-establishment supporters as County Clerk David Orr with him now.

Two sweet cats need foster home

A neighbor lost her apartment this morning and rather than allow her two cats to be taken by animal control, I took them in. However I have my own cats and can't keep them. I am contacting all the various rescues but thought I wouls see if anyone would foster these two sweeties until my neighbor gets back on her feet. Thanks.

Mary, Zehra Quadri's plans were not contingent on her becoming alderman. I don't know where you got the Ridge/Devon location; none was specified. She is looking at various locations around the ward. Her first priority at the moment is the opening of the commercial test kitchen at her community resource center, ZAM's Hope, on Arteesian. She's preparing for a zoning change hearing to make that a reality. In the meantime, she is also working on the textile business. It requires export licensing and other government paperwork that\s time-consuming, but, as originally stated, the textile business will become a realty later this year. Thanks much for your interest!

Governor Rauner Takes an Axe to Chicago Public Transit Funding

This is one of the consequences of electing a governor who rides in chauffeured limousines and has no sense of how ordinary people get to work. Yes, there's a pension crisis, but do you really address a crisis by decimating transit systems that are already significantly underfunded? By significantly increasing the number of cars on our crowded highways? By forcing low-income commuters to pay much higher transit costs? By potentially preventing some workers from getting to their jobs at all? Do you cure a cancer by reducing blood flow to the limbs?

Rauner plans to cut CTA funding by 45%, Metra funding by 60% and PACE funding by 41%:

The title, “Corrupt Illinois: Patronage, Cronyism, And Criminality” by Thomas J. Gradel and Dick Simpson. The book details the roots of political corruption in Illinois. The authors name names and discuss in detail acts of corruption and sleaze by our elected officials. The authors also identify the strategies and methods employed by our elected officials to rip us off. The authors make a number of recommendations for cleaning up politics in Illinois. However, the only way we will clean up the mess is for us TO INFORM OURSELVES and to begin helping our officials to behave more honestly and ethically by demanding reforms that the authors suggest are needed to clean up Illinois politics. I purchased the book last night and hope to begin it soon. I will be recommending it at my next book club.

Traffic light at Sheridan/Hollywood out--traffic backed up Sheridan for an hour

This morning the traffic light at Sheridan/Hollywood was out, flashing red. 311 was aware of many reports of it, yet nobody was on scene to do anything about it or direct traffic. Traffic was backed up on every feeder to it possible, for a full hour. Once you got to the light, traffic cleared right up, LSD was wide open. It was 100% because of this light that traffic backed up, yet nobody at the city can think to notice this and send someone to direct traffic? Literally 1000s were late to work because of this. (Including CTA users, sorry to the dozens who were stranded waiting for 147). This is the second or third largest urban metro area in the country, will there be a day when we're not being ran like we're a cornfield town of 8000?

It's not just this one example... this stuff happens WAY too often.

Yes, I shouldn't have said disbanded, they do still exist, but they're a tiny fraction of what they once were (like... 10% of what they were). They used to exist to serve all purposes throughout Chicago, now they primarily and really only serve sporting events.

Well, they are also around downtown and the Gold Coast during rush hours too.
