Terry.. I agree..Sidney is a brave man and you raised some great points--But i have "issues" both with the way it is written and the content itself. However Sidney has been open and even invited some of us over for coffee/tea. I find that VERY brave! I think one of (at least mine) big issues is Sidney says(in another thread) he has several degrees and a Doctorate--the writing and grammar is not on par with someone who says they have a Doctorate.

The humor comes both from Sidney and several of us with our input. I mean some of this IS really funny. Hopefully it is laughing with Sidney and not at him. Okay--maybe a little of both

I respect religions (unless they do harm to others) but a lot of this thread has been very very kooky--vomiting maggots? biting off toungues? I am not sure if George Washington is Satan.. some of it is just plain out of his world. But my intent in life is to laugh ALONG with people and I have the feeling Sdney is smoking and laughingtoo--which in my book is better then drinking and crying..

I missed the chicken thread--I need to search for it

Influenza, also known as "the flu," is a very contagious lung disease that causes an average of over 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths in the United States each year. Anyone can get the flu. For most people, the flu can cause fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue.

Flu infections among the elderly and those with chronic heart or lung disease can lead to more serious complications, including hospitalization and even death.

Here's who should especially consider receiving a flu shot:

• Adults over 50 years old
• Anyone with a chronic health condition
• Pregnant women
• Healthcare workers
• Caregivers for young children or the elderly
• Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities

Even you do not fall within one of the above categories, you should still think seriously about protecting yourself from the flu this winter.

I know it won't for me the first time I see it. I am of the mindset that unless you have a designated spot, you are not able to lay claim to anything. Shoveling out a spot is just paying it forward, right?

You can do the same at the ramp over the CVS at Sheridan and Loyola, if that's closer than the Howard CTA ramp. I used to have a monthly spot there for $135. It was a few blocks from home, but a good last resort when street parking was truly just not possible.

If I do drive, I'm just worried about the commute. How do the commutes compare: between Rogers Park and UChicago; Logan Square and UChicago; West Town and UChicago? Are there other neighborhoods that might be affordable that also have off street parking (in the $1000 range).

I looked up the commutes and google says 30 minutes for all of them. I am skeptical about this as google always says 30 minutes for commutes around Boston, where I currently live, and those end up being more like 40-45 minutes.

Thank you! I appreciate all of your feedback.

  • The 192 'express' bus takes longer than taking the red line from Loyola to Garfield and then the 55 bus to campus, not to mention it is quite costly to pay for both Metra and CTA. I make the trip 5 days a week via CTA and I spend about 15-17 hours a week to and from work.

from RP the commute could be via red line south and you can go to the Millenium Park metra underground w/out ever coming above ground, it's a 10 minute walk or so in between. the Metra leaves reliably on a schedule.. though the red line not. It would be a 1.5 hour commute probably most days.

I had American Heritage do it, after several other companies either declined to service my fireplace model (the company went out of business a few years ago) or proved to be incompetent.

Found Pre paid card

Hi Everyone,

Found a pre-paid Visa card on Winthrop just south of Hollywood this morning, 10/22.

Hopefully it is a card that was used up and carelessly tossed on the ground. (I could not get in touch with customer service via the number on the back, as I obviously don't have the appropriate pin number).

Was going to shred it, but in the off chance it has someone's living expenses on it, wanted to check here first.

So if it is yours, email with the last 4 digits and I'll get it back to you.

People's Gas No Parking Signs

I am fairly new to the neighborhood, and I noticed yesterday the no parking signs taped to the trees from People's Gas. Of course, I was first annoyed that this sign would stay up for two weeks. It's not secret that it's already hard enough to find parking (I average 30 minutes each time) , but this morning, I woke up early to move my car, and every other car was still there! And later in the day, there were still lots of cars parked right in frommt of the signs. Do these signs not really mean anything, even though they threaten towing? Also, I noticed the signs don't have.a permit number printed on them.. Does this make them invalid?

  • shawn m Moving from apt to apt in RP

The People's Gas signs don't require a permit number. Not sure why the other cars hadn't moved. The signs have dates written on them, is it possible the construction date had ended but they forgot to take down the signs?

  • daveP been around awhile

They are horrible about taking down the signs after they expire. I've been taking down all the expired ones I see when out walking my dog.

Just saw some the other day that expired in august!

People don't look at the dates, they just see the no parking, and don't park there.

Without public funding for mental health care people you and I know would be left with no help of any kind. Homelessness, drug addiction and crime often have roots in mental illness as victims of these illnesses try to cope day to day. I'm not saying that all criminals are victims of mental illness. I amm saying that without help, most of them will end up being victims or perpetrators. They really haven't got any other choice. This could happen to anybody.

The 2015 City Budget

What do you think about the 2015 budget released by the mayor last week? It is a non-controversial, feel good budget crafted to vote in before the election in February.

The budget doesn't address money for additional police officers and we still have no plan to deal with city pension debt. There were a few service additions added - rat abatement. pot hole repairs, etc., to superficially please voters who have been grumbling about the lack of city services for the last four years.

How will the alderman vote on the 2015 budget? Will he ask for our feedback? Are there ward budget meetings planned?

I know there is no tax increase in it, which bothers me since the Mayor keeps hoping that the General Assembly will somehow get us out of the financial mess left by his predecessor and exacerbated by his own inability to do the correct thing and just make a solid plan for honoring the city's obligations.

Renters rights

Is a renter legally required to give the landlord 30 days notice of a move out date?

  • Just google Chicago tenants rights. Thete are a number of organizations that can tell you of your rights and responsibilities.

    Di:

We need more facts to give you an accurate answer. That said, the best answer is to look at your lease carefully (assuming you have a written lease). Most form leases do not require 30 days notice. If there is no lease, then you and the landlord are required to provide 30 days notice. I volunteer as an attorney for landlords and tenants. I took these photos this morning. The tenants in this building (the northwest corner of Devon & Fairfield) don't care how they dispose of their garbage. Some of it is tossed out of the second and third floor windows above the dumpsters. I once saw a bag in mid-flight but couldn't tell which floor it came from. Much of it comes from tenants who toss their bags on top, behind, or next to the dumpster. The maintenance man is always cleaning up the alley, but he wasn't there today. And, as of half an hour ago, there's even more garbage on the ground, more bags tossed into the alley. Recently someone has begun to leave newspaper with torn bread and what appears to be cheese on top the dumpster several times a week. This may be poison (note the dead rat between the bags) and would explain the two dead squirrels and dead pigeon I've found in the last week. Squirrels are always on these dumpsters because there's always food here. The city has repeatedly cited this building but the tenants continue to dump their garbage like this. (I picked up the rat and the bread and cheese after I took the pictures.) I heard on tonight's news that Orkin has named Chicago the city with the nation's worse rat problem (based on the number of citizen complaints). The tenants here are one reason that's probably true.

If not yours, I'm open to suggestions on what we should do with him. I assume shelters don't intake directly. Does that mean we should call 311, or do we have to bring him down to CACC ourselves?

Uninsured people who go to the six remaining city mental health clinics need medications and have always been able to get them through the city mental health clinics (I checked prior budgets and medications have always been included in past budgets)

2. Advocate for additional dollars to be spent on mental health care specifically to re-open the clinic on Howard Street in Rogers Park.

3. Also, let's advocate for the city to become a preferred Medicaid provider to bring in revenue to the city mental health clinics.

4. Request a specific report about city residents living in Ward 49 who were patients at the Howard St. Clinic and what happened to each and every one of them.

5. Request additional dollars for a second and third psychiatrist .

  • Lucas G “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”

I agree with all five requests for the 2015 city budget.

  • It's worse by the dreaded Elston/diversey/Logan area, which is why I try to stay away.

Edgewater Theaters Produce Work for the Visually Impaired: Steep’s “The Vandal”

I am a blind woman who is well past the age to join AARP. Going to movies meant one needed to be told what was happening on the screen. The same, until recently, occurred with live theater.  Now one only needs to visit Edgewater theaters such as Raven Theatre on Clark or Steep Theatre on […]

Cermak Market?

Anyone got the scoop on the old Dominicks on Ridge? Looks like they're doing a bunch of work there and I heard it was gonna be a grocery called Cermak produce or something like that. Thanks.

  • Ooh, that's lucky! I would have loved to have a Cermak Market there (of course, now that I live in Bridgeport I've got several...). It's a good store.

  • JCV

That's good to know, Kelly! We've been missing having a grocery store option at that location!

Whole Foods on Broadway

Hello!

I see that they are making great progress at the Whole Foods on Broadway and Glenlake, they have the whole store gutted.

Does anyone one know if they are still on track to open in Early 2015? I have not heard anything from the Alderman's Office.

  • What does that have to do with Whole Foods? Get out of here!

  • ERussell Edgewater resident and dog owner

    Wowwwwww. Simmer down.

Peter, there was a recent community meeting. It looks like April of 2015. They did get a liquor license, so there will be the new usual pub/grill type stuff there. I wish it would open sooner, too! No more drives, however short, to Evanston to shop there.

Response to Li'l Buds Theatre Post

Encouraging second graders to write is wonderful. Encouraging them to compete against their classmates and then in a public forum is, I believe, not so wonderful.
While I'm sure the organizers have no ill intent, I take issue with having 7 year olds pitted against each other. The "losers" might put down their pens and never write again. The "losers" might experience losing as failure. Creativity and self confidence
could be seriously affected in the process. Please let our children experience the joy of writing without having to feel they have to vie against each other and win a contest.

I'm sure some would think he's responsible for either losing or finding the wards cats.

Rubber stamp Alderman helps close vital health clinics

The controversial 2012 City of Chicago budget that slashed library hours and cut 6 of 12 health clinics around Chicago, including one on Howard St.

"Alderman Joseph Moore said he would vote for this one because unlike previous budgets, "it is an honest budget."

Source: http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Mayor-Emanuels-Budget-Passed-Unanimously-133978073.html#ixzz3GJjLMDAU

Thumbs down.

  • Ok, Alderman Moore, I will, but later since it's kind of a busy day today for me. Thanks.

BTW, since that hearing is next week, Alderman Moore, maybe good idea for you to have your own very specific questions for that hearing re. this topic. Just saying. :)

  • Hugh M. Nuclear Scientist

Additionally, Alderman Moore, at the budget hearing on Health: let's

    1. Make sure there is money allocated for medications - I checked the 2015 budget and there is no line item for medications. Uninsured people need medications and have always been able to get them through the city mental health...

Additionally, Alderman Moore, at the budget hearing on Health: let's

    1. Make sure there is money allocated for medications - I checked the 2015 budget and there is no line item for medications. Uninsured people need medications and have always been able to get them through the city mental health clinics (I checked prior budgets and medications have always been included in past budgets)

    2. advocate for additional dollars to be spent on mental health care specifically to re-open the clinic on Howard.

    3. Also, let's advocate for the city to become a preferred Medicaid provider.

    4. Request a specific report about city residents living in Ward 49 who were patients at the Howard St. Clinic and what happened to each and every one of them.

    5. Additional dollars for a second and third psychiatrist is also needed.

    Signed,
Hugh, a constituent of the 49th Ward

Sneaky Campaign Tactics

Election season is nigh here in Chicago and it seems like things are heating up. Everyone knows Chicago has a history of some really questionable politics. What are some of your favorite stories of sneaky campaign tactics from the past and present?

  • Rob

Gordon mouthpiece Gernhardt- Perfect example of unfounded accusations, and why I refuse to consider voting for Gordon because of your involvement in his campaign.

Still don't want to comment on Gordon's attempt to disenfranchise the voters of the precincts he lost, huh? Best to try to distract every with the pink postcard boogeyman.

  • Roger Stein master carpenter

Rob, sometimes soothing one's own political ego is far more important than worrying about whether or not one's actions might disenfranchise honest voters. Sometimes repeat losers have to grasp any opportunity for support they can find even if that support does more damage than good. A recent comment is so true; If you lie down with dogs you will get back up with fleas. Someone who continues to hide behind mouthpieces needs a very strong flea collar right now.

Found: Black and White Cat

Hello, friends! I've come across a black and white cat. No collar, no microchip, not declawed, and he hadn't been neutered.

We took him to a vet to check for the microchip, and the vet thinks he's 1-2 years old and either belongs to someone and is lost or was abandoned since he's not afraid of people, is super affectionate, and is litter-box trained. Vet also thinks he might have been dumped because his fur is a little ratty and...

We took him to a vet to check for the microchip, and the vet thinks he's 1-2 years old and either belongs to someone and is lost or was abandoned since he's not afraid of people, is super affectionate, and is litter-box trained. Vet also thinks he might have been dumped because his fur is a little ratty and he's got some scratches on his nose from getting into fights with other animals while he's been on his own.

We've taken him in for now, but we can't keep him since we can't have pets. We're in touch with all sorts of shelters and rescue groups, but, as everyone knows, it's hard to get an animal into a no-kill shelter because they're always at capacity.

We've hit a wall in terms of trying to find his owners, so we're looking to get this guy a great home. Please get in touch if you're looking to adopt a companion animal.

Greenview (at Jarvis).

The shredding truck is one of my most popular initiatives and a great opportunity to get rid of any old or unwanted papers. Because the documents are shredded, you won't have to worry about anyone being able to read your private information. Just bring your old documents to the truck, where they will be shredded on the spot in front of you and then taken away to be recycled.

Bring any documents you no longer need or want but that might contain personal or private information. Examples include:

• Bank Statements
• Outdated medical records
• Pay stubs
• Old bills and receipts
• Credit card offers
• Tax returns older than seven years

As an added service, my Ward Service Office will be open Sunday afternoon to take any service requests you may have.

Clean out your home office or attic and join us this Sunday, October 19th for a day of paper recycling!

  • Joe Moore Alderman, 49th Ward

Sorry to hear that, Kateri. I sent out three separate emails announcing the shredding over the past week, plus posted it on EveryBlock. Whom do you use for your email?

  • Jefferson Park's Alderman Arena just announced a shredding event NOV 9th in that neighborhood. A bit of a hike, but the service will be available.

"Prevent identity theft by bringing your old paperwork with any sensitive information to this SHRED EVENT and get them destroyed while you watch.

    Shred-a-thon
    Sunday, Nov. 9th from 10AM - 1PM

TV Repair

Does anyone know of a TV repair shop that works on (and has parts for) older, picture tube model TV's? I have an older Sharp TV that I really like - but the picture tube finally gave out. I'd like have it repaired, even though I know I could easily buy a new TV, probably for what it will cost to repair it. I already have several newer, flat screen TV's, but this one's my favorite. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Prefer someone in the Edgewater/Andersonville, Rogers Park area, but I'm willing to venture out of the neighborhood for someone reputable.

  • Aram- Minas TV & Video owner- Edgewater neighbor for 44 years

Feel free to call anytime 773-764-0726 to discuss details, we are open everyday.

  • I have been a Minus customer for many years. Totally honest and fair!!!
