Blue ribbons on Sheridan near Jarvis

Does anyone know the reason for the blue ribbons tied to light poles on Sheridan from about Sherwin to Fargo? They appeared about a week ago and I'm sure whoever tied them had a purpose in mind.

  • ...in support of police.

  • which, upon further research, is a very recent thing, and a co-opt of the blue ribbon from its traditional meaning to bring attention to child abuse.

One serious question

After reading the latest round of "he said/he said" on this board which I read from time to time, I created an Every Block account only to ask this question: "I am a politically unattached, property owning Rogers Park resident who votes. Why would I vote for Don Gordon over Joe Moore in the upcoming aldermanic election?"

It's a serious question. I, the ordinary citizen, have never met Don Gordon, don't know what his positions are for the 49th or...

I, the ordinary citizen, have never met Don Gordon, don't know what his positions are for the 49th or the city, haven't as much as seen a campaign flyer. The only indirect contact I've had with him was in November as I was walking out of my polling place at 7:30 in the morning and a guy rode up on a bike with a petition to get him on the ballot. I signed it, as I usually do in those cases. And that's all I know of Don Gordon. I didn't live in this neighborhood when he ran in 2007.

While I like Joe Moore personally - the brief times I have met him - and I think he's doing a decent job (to my view), some of us think that 24 years is a long time to hold office. We're looking for a reason to listen to a challenger's thoughts if they are given to us. But if I didn't read this board I wouldn't even be sure that anyone is running. And I am going to assume that thousands of RP voters don't know that anyone IS running against Joe Moore. This is almost certainly going to be a bloodbath and I'm wondering at this point why the challenger is even bothering with it. Vanity of seeing one's name on a ballot?

So, Challenger, you have a few weeks. How about showing up at an El stop some morning (I've met Joe Moore there twice in three weeks... as well as Rahm once, but that's another thread). How about a position interview with that DNA newspaper? A flyer? A meet and greet or two? Heck, I don't know.

I've seen better organized write-in campaigns than this. Do something. Or get 19 percent of the vote I guess. Whichever.

Problem buildings in our neighborhoods

http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/bldgs/supp_info/building-code-scofflaw-list.html
There are several buildings in our neighborhood listed on the Chicago Building Code Scofflaw List " identifying residential building owners with three or more properties that are the subject of active Circuit Court cases where the violations remain uncorrected after the second court hearing."
Hopefully the respective aldercreatures will pursue the owners of the problem buildings in their wards to take the proper measures to bring the buildings up to code.
Hopefully the usual snipers for or against their local aldercreature will refrain from sullying the EB site with criticisms and just make sure the problems are corrected.

  • And so you are posting here why?

  • I'm surprised our old building 1810 W Farwell isn't listed. You know, the one that spontanously caught fire and burned down in under ten minutes... the one with 60+ outstanding code violations... the one with no insurance policy for us to claim against... after we were the second electrical fire in two years...

Is the Don Gordon Campaign Being Honest?

I have been at my current RP residence for nearly 17 years. I am a registered voter and interested in the future of the neighborhood. After all, I am a property owner and have made an investment. So, I did just that and requested to be added to the group.

However, it seems that my request was denied and I am unable to access the page. This leads me to question the sincerity of the Gordon campaign. Does this mean I am not allowed to ask Mr. Gordon questions via FB? Does this mean that, as a resident, I am not welcome to engage in a "lively discussion"?

The combo is quite worse in their association with the failed Gay Chicago newspaper publisher who now delivers pizza and sandwiches in the neighborhood. It is a very unlikeable team. Why would we vote for them at all? They don't seem nice.

Another lesson in political communications

On the thread about Sunday's one-candidate forum it was discussed that Joe Moore chose to not participate because he could not control the questioning and would be negatively exposed if he had to answer tough questions about performance, legal investigations, and other "sensitive" subjects. On the thread about Sunday's one-candidate forum it was discussed that Joe Moore chose to not participate because he could not control the questioning and would be negatively exposed if he had to answer tough questions about performance, legal investigations, and other "sensitive" subjects. It is part of a communication strategy.

Over the weekend, one of Joe's door-to-door canvassers visited my home, despite the Don Gordon sign in the window and banner above. He mistakenly had me and my wife, or at least our address, on the list he carried. He was confused.

We had a little laugh and politely shooed him away, but not before accepting Joe's four-color (read pricey) flyer. It is another example of how some politicians rely on one-way communication to delivery messaging in ways that avoid two-way discussion or rebuttal.

There is a common practice within political public relations called "stretching." In private sector PR it is considered unprofessional.

In the flyer, Joe appropriately takes credit for the PB project, paper shredding day, the picnic he sponsors, dealing with service requests and other legitimate activities.

From there, however, some of the claims arguably get a little dicey. According to this flyer, for example, Joe is responsible for:

Renovation of all the Rogers Park CTA stations

Resurfacing 70 RP streets

Improving the RP business climate, including new restaurants and cafes on Morse, Jarvis, Howard and Clark

Strengthening community ties

Adding bicycle police patrols

Improving our neighborhood school ratings and test scores

Here is the key: Joe never explicitly states "I did all of these things;" however, by listing these items in his campaign flyer, the implication - the stretch - is that they are Joe's political achievements.

I won't refute these statements here; this post is about political communication strategy, but you get the point about how one-way communication is employed as campaign strategy.

They have lived there as squatters, paid no rent, and demanded that Citibank give them the house. Citibank has gone through a long process to get them evicted, but their demand now is that the house be sold to them for $200,000. The house is large and worth considerably more. Why do I care? Because they are terrible neighbors. There are condo buildings on either side, and they have parties from April through November that go on until 2 a.m. They are unresponsive to neighbors who ask them to quiet down. The property is a mess. This house was on the news tonight on Channel 5, and there will be more to come. Thoughts?

Jim-- I might partially agree with you if they were good neighbors. You don't live next door--- their parties are in the back yard and deck, not in the house. We have people in our building who have to get up early on Saturday and Sunday mornings (cook, cab drivers, nurse, for example). A party once in a while is okay, but every weekend-- no. They have had a DJ playing til midnight, and post "party til 2 a.m. at the House on Ridge" on their FB website. When we have asked them to quiet down, they aren't responsive at all. We have called the cops so many times. If they weren't such a problem, we would never have known they were squatters.

I find the statement attributed to Quadri to be curious, indeed, and wonder if you're taking it out of context. Exactly what was the question? Was she asked if becoming alderman would benefit organizations like hers? I think I will contact Quadri's campaign for her side of it. Something doesn't ring true here.

By the way, there's no need to put leader in quotation marks. She founded an organization that has helped hundreds of families in the ward over the past 15 years. She has a proven record of commitment to the community. She partnered with Bernie Stone in many activities that were beneficial to residents and businesses alike.

On the other hand, the candidate you describe as a "serious and focused consultant" has no such record, having moved here solely to run for alderman.

Bad smell in my apartment

This is a weird post. There is a bad smell in my apartment, right inside my door, as soon as I enter. I thought it was my trash, I had made chicken, but I took the trash out and it's still there. I had the window cracked open yesterday but I still smell it.

The hallways are not cleaned or maintained in this building. The management said they were having an exterminator come around last week for maintenance, but I never saw them when I was home.

Any ideas what it could be? How to get rid of a smell? It's been 3 days now.

  • YOU NEED TO CALL MY FRIEND AT ALL STAR CARPET HE DOES ODOR REMOVAL

  • Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. The smell is gone. I don't smell it anymore when I'm coming into my apartment, which is the only place I smelled it.

I have hardwood floors in my apartment. The hallways of the building are carpeted, but not vacuumed in the past, maybe 2 months....

I can't afford to move. I just moved in this summer and it was a big expense for me and I have a lease.

At least my apartment is clean and not smelly!

    Thanks.

Does Don Gordon have a PR problem?

I seen a lot of political campaigns in my life big and small. I even seen three of them here in Rogers Park since I moved here 10 years back. It really seems like the messaging coming from Gordon's camp is pretty vague. Anyone else get that vibe? You can't have it both ways, Alderman Moore

Alderman Moore was spotted campaigning with Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. Yet, he's gone on record backing Mayor Rahm Emanual's campaign.

"Joining Garcia in earning the IVI-IPO’s endorsement were several incumbent aldermen who are among Emanuel’s reliable City Council supporters. They include aldermen Pat Dowell (3rd); Will Burns (4th); Anthony Beale (9th); Willie Cochran (20th); Walter Burnett (27th) and Joe Moore (49th)."

SOURCE: http://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/7/71/321441/ivi-ipo-endorses-garcia

I believe we've got a flip-flopper. Is the Alderman of the 49th Ward running so scared that he's gotta play both sides of the fence? Is that what we want in an Alderman? A disingenuous politician that will say anything to get elected?

  • He doesn't even use hashtags correctly! Gay, Chicago, and Magazine make no sense in relation to 49th ward politics....then again, Gay Chicago Magazine wouldn't make sense either. Hey, anyone ever noticed that defunct GCM boxes are still taking up curb space in some parts of town? You'd think that with Craig's passion for city streets he would make an effort to clean up his own mess.

Why is a Joe Moore staffer being paid by Chicago to work at a non-profit of Joe's choice?

This issue was raised in another thread and labeled "off-topic" so I thought it made sense to give it a stand alone thread.

Ann Hinterman has a full-time $40k job in Moore's office, but she's also been assigned per Joe's announcement to the Farmer's Market: "I agreed to assign my young new staff assistant, Ann Hinterman, to serve as its part-time market director. As a result, the market is financially solvent and has become a Sunday morning institution."

Statement of Facts:
1) We now have the young and inexperienced staff assistant working on Sundays as part of her employment obligation to Moore.
2) The farmers market is not a stand alone 501c3. It files its non-profit tax returns as DevCorp North aka the Rogers Park Business Alliance.
3) Per Guidestar, the budget for the market is $76,000. We don't know whether any of that goes to Ann, but it seems unlikely because all salaries listed under DevCorp North equaled (in 2013) $82,486 and the head of RPBA made $79,167.
4) The total expenses for DevCorp North in 2013 were $234,167 so the market uses about one-third of the RPBA budget while the executive director received another third.
5) The major sponsors of the Market are: Joe's office, the Rogers Park Business Alliance, the Clark, Morse, Glenwood Special Service Area, and Alderman Joe Moore's Green Corps.

Questions:
1) Why does the Farmer's Market receive aldermanic staff to manage it?
2) How is Hinterman being compensated and what is that compensation?
3) Did other worthy Ward 49 non-profits get to seek aldermanic staffing in some kind of open competition for resources?
4) Why is so little of the RPBA budget going to anything other than the market and its executive director?
5) Doesn't the RPBA have an obligation to help out the Clark (Latino) and Howard (African-American) commercial areas as well? Or like the minority students at Gale School, are they second class citizens to Joe and the RPBA?

I invite you to attend a community meeting I'm hosting to review plans for the construction of a new three-story, mixed use residential apartment building at 1240-44 W. Devon. The meeting will take place next Tuesday, January 27th, 7:00 p.m., at the Heartland Health Center, 1300 W. Devon, in the conference room.

The planned development complies with the existng B3-2 zoning on the site and requires no zoning relief from the City. The development team, Three Corners Development, agreed to meet with the community to share their plans and to consider any reasonable suggestions put forth by the community residents.

The site is located between Magnolia and Lakewood Avenues and was formerly a parking lot for the old Weinstein Funeral Home. Three Corners acquired the property in 2013 as part of their development of the new $1.4 million Heartland Health Center, which recently opened a block west of this location.

The new building will consist of 7,000 square feet of storefront commercial retail space on the ground floor, which can be subdivided if necessary into two or more commercial spaces. Ten multi-family residential apartment rental units will be constructed on the second and third floor, consisting of six three-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units.

Additionally, a ground floor residential patio and 11 parking spaces will be located at the rear of the property. The total project will be approximately 20,000 square feet in size.

The developers tell me they will pursue LEED certification for the new construction, a prestigious distinction awarded to projects built in a way that improves energy savings, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and CO2 emissions reduction.

The developers plan to start construction in the spring with an anticipated completion date by the end of this year.

The renderings for the development can be found in the photos below.

Suburbanite in the city!

We are between Hollywood and a Glenwood on Ridge and would love some feedback on the area. We work early hours so are going to the car and walking dogs between 4-5am. We typically walk on Glenwood, Early and Wayne. I'm aware you need to be alert at all times no matter where you are in the city but am just curious about others general vibe with the area. Lease is up soon and we haven't been able to explore like we hoped but love our place.

  • It wasn't about you at all, sorry. For coming from the suburbs, you seem to be very realistic about the area traffic and all. If all the people coming from the burbs were as realistic as u it would be nice. Unfortunally, many suburbanites buy their cheap, crappy condo near a busy street and then want the street to go away. That area is getting a lot safer and nicer. Hope you continue to like the area :-).

  • JMG

    aww ben!

we can't all be rough, tough michelin men like you, maybe you should get out of edgewater before we flaccid suburbanites turn it into schaumburg. you'll be happier anyway, flexing your abs somewhere gritter and more urban, like Logan Sq or uk village.

now I'm going to call Olive Garden & Applebees and and see if we can convince them to open on Clark because what edgewater needs is more diverse dining options.

Thirty years ago today, on August 21, 1984, the dismembered remains of sixteen-year-old Danny Bridges were discovered in a trash dumpster, behind an apartment building at 1632 W. Sherwin.

Police arrested Larry W. Eyler, a 31 year-old house painter in his apartment at 1628 W. Sherwin.

In September 1983, while Eyler lived in a house on north Greenview, he was questioned as a "prime suspect" in the murders of eight young men, and was later arrested and held on $1million bail, as a suspect in the killing of Ralph Calise, who lived at 5014 N, Hermitage.

Eyler's bond was reduced to $10,000, when a judge ruled that the evidence against Eyler had been obtained improperly, and so could not be used against him. Eyler then posted $1000, and was released.

On June 1st, Eyler moved into a four-room apartment on the first floor, at 1628 W. Sherwin. It was in the bedroom of that apartment, where Eyler raped, tortured, and then repeatedly stabbed Danny Bridges to death. After dragging the body into the bathroom, he proceded to dismember it in the bathtub, using a hacksaw.

Eyler then painted the walls of the bedroom, to cover the blood stains, but police were able to recover the evidence beneath the fresh paint, using a new technology, called "Luminol".

After a lengthy and gruesome trial, a jury found Eyler guilty, and he was sentenced to death on Oct 3, 1986.

In 1991, he tried unsuccessfully, to save himself from Death Row by promising to admit to at least 17 more murders, and revealing the name of his accomplice, but on March 6, 1994, Eyler died in prison, from AIDS-related complications.

After his death, his lawyer revealed the names of 21 of Eyler's victims, as Eyler had requested, but she would not reveal the name of his accomplice.

I loved the Nortown. Saw many movies there in the '70s. Yes, I agree that Mr. Stone may have squandered an opportunity, as you describe. Of course aldermen have great influence in attracting business and helping development. The operative word here is influence. This doesn't mean an alderman can get blood out of a stone. I'm not certain that the alderman is simply sitting back and waiting for something to happen, as you put it. That may be jumping to conclusions. Perhaps you know something I don't. But I do know that the plans for the building all went up in smoke after the economic crisis of 2007, as did many other development plans.

As for the TIF and the streetscape, I'm not certain that the funds for this all come from the TIF. You may want to check that. In any case, this is a sorely needed facelift for Devon Avenue, in my opinion. And I do think that it will attract business.

Also, I agree with Alexandru. That seems a ridiculous amount of money for that parcel. But what do I know.

  • Paco 50thWardFollies.com

The streetscape by itself will do nothing to attract business, as Peter rightly notes. The storefronts are still shabby and dirty, the merchandise is the same from store to store, and the merchants don't care about making their stores attractive. They don't even wash their windows or sweep the streets out front--or hire someone else to do it. Why would anyone invest in what is basically a 24-block strip mall? Silverstein is just clueless when it comes to economic development.

She doesn't read EveryBlock so I'm forwarding your comments to her. My guess is that she'll be outraged by them. She loves working for the market.

Wow Helen -- A City worker is paid by the City with our tax dollars to work for a non-profit of the Alderman's choice and that's PERFECTLY legal?! Now, that's outrageous!!

Japan's number of births has hit an all-time low for 4 years in a row, spelling a worrying issue on its already delicate economy.

In 2014, the estimated birth-rate in Japan reached a record low of a mere 1 million while the number of registered deaths reached 1.3 million. Such downward trajectory in the country even worsens the already bad situation with a shrinking and aging population.

As noted by Elliott & Associates Research Global Markets (http://elliottassociatesresearch.com/), births in Japan have seen a huge and relentless decline for decades now. Starting in 1973, there was not a year where the fertility rate in Japan hit enough numbers to support a stabilized population. Though there were some recent improvements made, they were still not enough to increase the numbers. The number of deaths that has outnumbered the number of births by the biggest margin yet poses a problem for the government to ensure the small workforce can continue to support growing number of seniors.

Experts would say Japan is in a "death spiral" because its demography has been on a bad situation for a long time now that it is virtually impossible to change its trajectory significantly...

So far, the best bread I've found on the far north side is the Georgian bakery on Devon. Their "french" bread (more like an Italian baguette) is a delight. It's nice to know of these bakeries in Evanston and Skokie, but I'm not about to take a $15 taxi ride or drive five miles just to pick up some bread.

A good bakery can be the very heart of a community. There's an extraordinary one in Goshen, Indiana--Rachel's Bread--that anyone interested in the business of bread baking should go visit and study as a model for a community bakery. It makes a good profit and everyone in town buys there. It's located in a building right next to the Goshen farmer's market (just like Heartland Cafe).

For the life of me I can't figure out why all these energetic young entrepreneurial and socially-conscious Chicagoans don't think of a career in baking, particularly in a historically progressive neighborhood like Rogers Park where a bakery would seem a natural fit.

Recycling?

I am renting a place in Edgewater and the building does not have a Recycling container (forcing me to use the neighbors across the alley way - shhh). Does anyone know if there is a place I can call to have a recycling container dropped off at my location?

  • WC Turck writer, artist, broadcaster and activist

Claire, thanks for that link. I live in a condo with 30 units and get heartbroken as I am loading my tub of recycling while 29 other units simple dump all of their garbage in the common bin.

I would like to hear from more folks who have seen blue containers dumped with regular containers in the same truck, as Amy reported. I'd like to know if it is isolated or common practice and then make some noise about it.

  • Common practice. There is far more recycling waste than market to sell it in. Unfortunately, a lot of the separated recycling goes to the landfill anyway :-(

Excellent article on 49th ward pay-to-play politics

Ben Woodard has done his homework and provided insight into campaign financing in the 49th ward.

Full article here: http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150122/rogers-park/ald-joe-moore-nearly-doubles-campaign-fund-114333-at-end-of-year

A few key points:

"Most of Moore's donors provided addresses outside of the ward he represents, and many included business owners, developers and investors."

"But some contributors recently won the support of the alderman at City Hall for concessions to lift liquor moratoriums and open businesses."

A few key points:

"Most of Moore's donors provided addresses outside of the ward he represents, and many included business owners, developers and investors."

"But some contributors recently won the support of the alderman at City Hall for concessions to lift liquor moratoriums and open businesses."

"Pradeep Patel, who know (sic) owns two liquor stores in the ward, won the support of Moore to open Hops and Grapes in the former Isam's Liquor Store on Sheridan Road.
A frequent contributor, Patel donated $1,000 at the end of December."

"Go Grocer, an independent grocery chain that intends to open in Loyola University's Granada Center, also won the support of Moore, who sponsored an ordinance to lift a liquor moratorium on the block so the store could sell packaged goods. The company donated $500 to the alderman in December."

"In addition, James Yoo, owner of the Morse Avenue strip mall that recently evicted all of its tenants, donated $500 in November."

We can all come to our own conclusions; however, I do know it is an ongoing concern of many that important decisions are being made about the future of Rogers Park based on political profitability rather than the good of the community.

Don Gordon and Michael Lavelle? That's an eye opener and proof of the saying that if you lie down in the gutter with dogs you will end up getting fleas. The behind the scenes sleaze factor in his desperate campaign is creepy. It goes all the way back to the dirty Republican money that funded the lies about John Kerry and the swift boats and Pritzker money that quietly got stuffed into Gordon's pockets before he blew it all and lost the election. Where did that money go by the way? Does anyone know? Did some of that go to Anne Sullivan before Gordon dumped her? Gordon never told us where that Republican money went or how much was spent on buying bananas.

This one isn’t about individual Yelp reviews, but rather a question as to how EB decides which Yelp reviews to put in the daily digest. Twice in the past week I’ve clicked on a cited Yelp review, only to find the most recent one having been posted months or even nearly a year ago. I click on these in the digest to see what people are saying about business establishments LATELY, and what the current state of these places are in order to either try them or avoid them. Is there a particular algorithm the site software uses, and if so, why does it sometimes pick old reviews to list???

(I’m sure some trolls will inevitably seize on this post as a complaint about a first-world problem, declaring it has “racist undertones,” or telling me not to pay attention to Yelp...or just see their comments in print. If you don’t have something pertinent to say.....what the hey, knock yourself out anyway).

  • I found the link that Sandy is referring to:

Note that the link refers to a review by a brian-s, dated Jan 25. This review does not exist on the Yelp page for the Granville Towers. I suspect this review was deleted, but the Everyblock post is a snapshot in time and doesn't update to reflect this change.

What I’d also like to see on Yelp is a “reply” button (not for the business owner but for those of us consumers who want to address or disagree with a review). Even an “off-base” button option added to the “Do you think this review is....?” array. So many reviewers base their opinions on their personal prejudices (like the one-star for a Catholic priory), particular dietary preferences (e.g., slamming a pastry-shop for not offering gluten-free or a burger-and-hot dog joint for not having vegan options); scathing reviews based on delivery alone for primarily-table-service restaurants when the reviewer has never deigned to set foot inside; or for prices higher than those charged by late-night-drunk-food joints. (I’ve learned to ignore deplorable grammar and spelling, since those skills are being ignored by budget-strapped science-and-math-obsessed schools, and everyone depends on flawed AutoCorrect these days). But what’s with the rash of F-bombs lately? Doesn’t sound any less obnoxious just because the other three letters are eliminated. How a review like that (the latest one-star for Calo) gets in while others that civilly address pertinent issues are “not recommended” because the reviewer hasn’t posted in awhile is beyond me. Oh, those wacky website algorithms!
