My wife, 3 month old baby, and I are currently looking at apartments all over Rogers Park to move at the end of this month. Recently we looked at an apartment that is stunningly beautiful and perfect for our family. However, we noticed that right around the corner there is a blue light police camera box. (Flashing very annoyingly bright at night). We are new to this city and do not know this area very well.

Does anyone have any insight into what sort of walk safety/crime rates are like around Seeley & Fargo? My wife likes to go running and we like to be outdoors a lot. Peckish Pig is right there on Howard and we love that place!

This apartment is amazing but that police camera box really freaked us out!
We are seasoned city livers.. We don't get freaked out by everything.. Its just I never lived near one of those cameras. I usually only see those in only pretty darn bad neighborhoods (when I lived in Philly.)

Any insight into this specific area of Rogers Park would be amazing!

Thanks neighbors!

I would consider Edgewater - much safer and more family oriented. RP has an Alderman that thinks the area has become safer despite a resident bus stop killing and a Loyola Student robbed and killed walking home. He is an advocate on no foie gras in restaurants as Ducks being killed bothers him. (This was a big conversation when I was in Europe - no one could believe it!)

His priorities and his "we are getting better" statements in face of a huge gang and innocent residents murder problem tells me that things wont change as long as he has this 'I am doing fine" attitude -Child in a stroller - better to consider West of Broadway Edgewater or Andersonville. Sheridan Rd around Loyola is safe as Loyola has a great security force - and the Sheridan Rd high-rises have security and doorman services - the building Malibu has a private garden.

  • CPinRP A Rogers Park neighbor since 2006

James, do you live in Rogers Park? I'd counter that RP is very family-oriented. The foie gras debate is years old and not a major issue. (I suspect the Alderman saw the folly of his pursuing it when the neighborhood had more pressing needs.) And since that time Rogers Park has indeed improved dramatically. There have been folks on EB that have shared the statistics that crime has decreased significantly.

Reminder: Weds March 5 meeting re: Touhy/Rogers intersection redesign

The meeting is at 7pm at Pottawattomie Park. This is an article describing the redesign:
http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150226/rogers-park/public-meeting-set-for-hazardous-touhy-ridge-intersection-alderman-says

Not certain I have any ideas in lieu of the planned design; it's a tough intersection, no matter what direction you're heading in a vehicle. That the eastbound Touhy traffic approaches from the crest of a hill makes visibility for the Touhy-to-Rogers left turn is an added challenge. I'll be interested in the discussion.

Chuy didn't look too good in the video embedded in the Christian Science Monitor article. I like the man, I like his priorities, but will he be able to deal with the economic realities of pensions and city budgets? Of course, the other question is whether Rahm will be able to deal with the same realities or will he and the Council keep kicking the can down the road? As with climate change you can only kick the can so far and you will pay the price. Democrats too often of pretending that finances don't matter while Republicans pretend that revenues and income and tax inequities don't matter. We need revenue and we need to be very smart about how we use it.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, Rahm is a Republican.

Dog Walker

Looking for recommendations for an experienced & reliable dog walker for my THREE large breed dogs for a 3x a day for two and a half days at the end of the month stint.. I know, seems like a lot (because it is)! They are great dogs but need somebody experienced and patient! My usual dog sitter has to head out of town before I'll be back so I need somebody to fill in the gaps. They'll be staying with my mom in Rogers Park so there is flexibility. Thanks in advance!recommendations in advance!

Another vote for Kim at Northside here. She's been walking our dog for a year now and she's great, and affordable.

I just learned the word is out from Springfield that massive budget cuts proposed by IL's new guv will severely impact social services (always conservatives' favorite target). This worries me from a general standpoint as an IL resident, but also from a personal one because my young adult son is disabled and he's housed in a special facility in the suburbs to provide a long-term supportive living environment for the disabled. If these budget cuts are approved, we've learned the program that funds our son's living and work facilities will lose over $800K from its operating budget.

We are pretty freaked. These programs and others like them around the State are absolutely essential to the population they serve, and yet they have suffered continual, deep budget cuts throughout the years. They are struggling to meet the many expenses of providing their services as it is. If they lose this money, we have no idea how they can stay open. If they close, where will its fragile and vulnerable population go? There must be a better way to balance IL's budget than robbing disadvantaged people.

The only chance is to put enough pressure on the State reps to veto Mr. Rauner's proposal. Anyone who could write letters of protest to their elected officials, we would be so grateful. Also, can anyone tell me to whom shall we address our letters? Who are the ones that serve our community? Thanks!

Jeanne thanks so much for all the info. I'll put calls into both people in the morning. I'm very disturbed to hear of all the programs for youth and seniors that would be eliminated. All those you mentioned are critical to the population they served. I bristled when I read of the bullying prevention program being gutted. In recent years, there's been growing awareness of, and concern for, the harm done to children targeted by peers who bully them. Maybe because of the rise of social media, or a rash of suicides of young prople, pushed to despair from bullying.I cheered in my head every time I heard a new report on schools and communities launching anti-bullying programs and additions to curriculum. I too was a target of bullies in grade school and no one spoke out against then. It was thought to be an ordinary aspect of growing up. The principal told my mother it's best grown-ups stay out of peer conflicts. Let them work the problems out by themselves, he said. It's an important life skill. No one protected us. No one intervened. We who were bullied learned to suck it up and wait it out. Except the ones driven to suicide, I guess. 45-50 years later, bullying prevention caught on in a big way. I celebrated the movement, and with each new program I heard about, I felt my own traumatic experiences vindicated. If Bruce Rauner had experienced even a fraction of what I suffered, he would agree these are necessary efforts to stop the cycle.

FebGirl - yes, it would be sad to see the bulling prevention program eliminated because bullying is far worse today than 20-30 years ago and so are the consequences to the victim. My oldest daughter as an elementary student was bullied by a girl - very hard to deal with since 30 years ago the behavior had no name and I had no experience in how to deal with it effectively. During the course of my professional career, I have been bullied and witnessed it at work - just a year ago by a young millennium woman. From what I am seeing, our culture appears to be evolving as less civil and less tolerant since the early 1980s, with the exception of how African Americans were treated (and continues today). I did not see the kind of uncivil behavior in public life during the 1950s' and 1960s as I see today - of course isolated incidences occurred. If we can prevent bullying in school kids, we could prevent the dreadful lifelong consequences.

Learn how to appeal your property tax assessment and possibly lower your tax bill at a special workshop sponsored by County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, County Assessor Joe Berrios and my office. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 4th, 6:30 p.m., at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse, 1230 W. Greenleaf (at the Lake).

The assessed value of your property is one of the factors that determine the amount of property taxes you pay. This assessed value is determined by the Cook County Assessor. If you believe your property assessment is improper, you have a right to appeal that assessment.

Because of the improving economy, the average assessed valuation for property in Rogers Park has increased 12.75%. If your 2015 assessment increased more than 12.75% over your 2014 assessment, you should seriously consider appealing your assessment.

If you own property in Rogers Park Township (Devon to the Evanston border, Kedzie to the Lake), you have until Friday, March 20th, to submit an appeal to the Cook County Assessor.

At the workshop, you will learn how the assessment process works, how to file an appeal with the County Assessor's office and how an appeal is granted. Please bring your property tax bill in order to more efficiently file an appeal. Staff from the Assessor's office will be available to answer questions and help complete appeal forms.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, the Cook County Assessor's website provides an overview of the property tax appeal process, including step-by-step instructions on how to appeal your assessment. For information on the appeals process and to file an appeal online, visit:

http://www.cookcountyassessor.com/frequentlyaskedquestions.aspx

Make sure you file your appeal before the March 20th deadline.

For assistance in filing your appeal, contact my staff assistant Michael Land at mike.land@cityofchicago.org or 773-338-5796.

I wanted to share that I've had really positive experiences going to the pharmacy at Jewel in the Gateway Center on Howard and recommend them. I previously had our family's prescriptions at Walgreen's, where it was frequently crowded and the pharmacists and techs often seem super busy. Ever since switching over, I've found that the pharmacists at Jewel really do have time to answer questions, look up your meds, etc. One time when I had asked to add flavoring to my son's medicine (which Walgreens had previously done), the pharmacist actually came and found me in the shopping aisles to ask a question and tell me about how the flavoring could effect the medicine if it wasn't stored properly, and that this medicine was already very sweet and might not really need flavoring. Wow, that was really great to know they were being so vigilant. Just wanted to pass it on and give some compliments to the Jewel pharmacists. :)

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 50 + years

I liked the pharmacists at Dominick's and wish Jewel had brought them back but so far so good with the ones now at Gateway Jewel. Good to know that one came looking for you in the store. George used to do that at Dominick's.

  • Absolutely agree. Jewel has the best prices on their RX plan compared to Walgreen's. Also, I have had 3 different pharmacists that were all equally informative and friendly.

  • Have to agree; Jewel/Osco so much better than Walgreens. Does anyone know if they are linked? Can I go into another Osco somewhere in the city and get my perscriptions filled?

Paco, thanks for your thoughts. The white haired lady that took my sisters pen and privacy folder at the registration table was the same one that scurried to the voting machine when my sister's ballot was rejected. Meanwhile, I reached the table at which point the Indian gentleman took the pen and the privacy folder, insisting that I leave it with him even though I questioned him. I reached the ballot box as you were "initialing" my sister's ballot then placed it in the machine. The same thing took place with me. Sorry if that was you Paco as I respect many things that you have to say and you appear to have integrity. I have voted for over 40 years and nobody has touched my ballot or "helped" me place it in the machine. Perhaps everyone was trying to be too helpful.

Yesterday's election numbers are interesting. Terrible turn-out overall throughout the City. The cold probably had something to do with it, but I think it was also a sense that people just aren't very supportive of the candidates who are/were running. Yesterday's election numbers are interesting. Terrible turn-out overall throughout the City. The cold probably had something to do with it, but I think it was also a sense that people just aren't very supportive of the candidates who are/were running. I do believe that if "none of the above" was an option in the mayoral race, that would have garnered more than 50%!!

Anyhow, in our Ward, here are the numbers:

1) We have 25,105 registered voters.
2) 8,380 voted yesterday (33.38%).
3) 5,566 voted for Joe (giving him 66.42% of the vote), but only 22.17% of registered voters bothered to vote for him.
4) 2,814 voted for Don (giving him 33.58% of the vote), but only 11.21% of registered voters bothered voting for him.

So, what does RP want in an alderman? Let's describe the experience and qualities we seek in an alderman in this Ward. (Let's try REALLY hard NOT to use this as a chance to bash Joe and/or Don, but instead, design our ideal candidate!)

I'll start the list with the following:
1) Someone willing to lead by talking about the seriousness of the fiscal problems facing the City and that none of the ways to address them will be pleasant (think chemo).
2) Someone who prioritizes education based on what is good for the kids and not what is good for the adults.

Let's keep the list going!!

Hoping anyone could help me find a nice one bedroom ( or two if price is right) dog friendly apartment. My dog is ~60 lbs , 15yrs old sweet American Staffordshire Terrier. WELL BEHAVED - never barks , ( unless a stranger knocks at the door- barks once at the second knock and then stops) sleeps most of day and NEVER has accidents inside . I wrote all of this in case you may have a friend or know of someone who owns a bldg. My dog has great references in the bldg and in neighborhood . Living in a renovated condo in RP w/parking and storage (unfortunately require) . Would love a smaller building ( less than 20 units ) and either three flights of stairs or elevator . My dog can still run and jump tho sometimes navigating stairs can be precarious. Thanks for any help ! O and it doesn't have to be in RP - could be as far as 20 minute radius from RP .

I don't know whether there are still one-bedroom apartments available but it' s very dog-friendly. The fenced courtyard is pretty much used as a dog park. I live across the street and watch the dogs cavort there all the time. Building has around 25 units.

    Hi Ms Pea,

I'm in the same boat. As someone who is looking for a place in Rogers Park near the Metra that allows for multiple pets, it has been a difficult struggle.

Here are my suggestions: Stay away from Apartmentfinders, it is a waste of time and energy. Rogers Park Vintage Management (http://www.rpvmhome.com) has places that allows for dogs and it does not seem to have weight restrictions. Someone mentioned Urban Equities and they seem to have some places as well that allow for dogs. Zillow is a good resource and you can set up for notifications so you are notified when places become available.

Sadly, places that say they will take pets are not always correct. So keep that in mind. There have been at least 3 places that say "pets okay" only to have them say no pets allowed.

    Good luck to you!

Marty’s Martini Bar Anticipated Expansion Canceled

With a die-hard following of cocktail lovers, Marty’s Martini Bar at 1511 W Balmoral Ave. has been filling up glasses with spirits for ten years now. The narrow bar has a charm of its own with a very intimate setting. However, the small space can get very crowded as the ever-growing number of patrons come in to celebrate. Over the last year […]

  • I am sure that they will since they been there for years... but I understand that another cocktail lounge is going to take over the space.. so it will thin the crowd so that you can get in..

  • I agree with Teddy…and part of the atmosphere of Marty's is the crowd and wall to wall people. Yes, a larger space would have been nice, but Elixir will be nice to go to as an over flow or another option. Personally, I am psyched for Replay. Forget about laundry…my quarters are going there instead!!!

The local Chamber of Comix printed full color reproductions on the same kind of paper and sold them for a discount price of $11. Each ticket only cost them seven cents to make. So far they sold more than 100 and raked in almost twelve hundred dollars. Most of the money will be donated to the widow's and orphan's fund at the local shelter for lost herps. Winter is very dangerous for them so they need shelter and warm cloths.

Anyone see the person who hit my car?

Hi all, I really hate posting negative things, but this morning we went out to our car parked on Lunt near one of the fire hydrants (legally) and next to an alley to find that someone had slammed into our front driver side bumper and cracked it significantly. They must have it it pretty hard to crack it (a piece was missing), and of course no note was left. We use our car for our catering jobs and having it damaged like that does not look good. If anyone has any information, or saw anything (or if you are the one who hit us...no questions asked, just please come forward), I would really appreciate it!

  • Hi Nancy B. I'm very sorry to hear about your car, and hope that either 1) the offender returns and offers a form of compensation, or 2) one of your neighbors comes forth with helpful details about the car that hit you.

If it's any consolation (which I know it won't be), I've heard several cars on Touhy/Sheridan being hit this winter during the early hours of the morning. By the time I awakened enough to realize what happened, and went to a Touhy-facing window to capture any information, the vehicles had already driven off. Given that almost each incident has occurred between 2-4 am, I'm unsure what was at fault (intoxication, texting, limited tire traction)--but I've definitely heard more of these "accidents" during the past two months. Most of the damage I've seen is a mirror being knocked off or a dented rear bumper, but a few cars have clearly been sideswiped along the entire length of the vehicle.

Definitely have mixed feelings about the new parking garage. It's *just* close enough to my home to be a blessing during summer months when I don't mind the multi-block walk home in the evening (and when finding street parking goes from "winter-snow/excruciating" to "free-beach-parking/non-existent"). But I'm not looking forward to the multi-block pre-sunrise workday walks to my car, alone, while carrying valuables. But "that's life in the city," I suppose.

Nancy, I'm sorry this happened to you. In case you haven't considered this, if you will end up paying for the bumper repair, it seems like you might be able to deduct it from your taxes, as a business expense. Check with your accountant. (I'm not any kind of tax expert, but I'm also self employed ;)

Making whine with sour grapes

After a defeat, Most politicians try and send a message to their supporters that they should try to work with their opponent for the betterment of all. And then there is Don Gordon's message -

"The residents of Rogers Park who put Alderman Moore back in the council for another 4 years simply don't get it or prefer stick their collective heads in the sand..."
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Gordon2015/permalink/780917585317984/

Well, at least he isn't trying to disenfranchise half of the ward this time... he's just insulting 66% of them.

Way to move the neighborhood forward Don!

  • I guess that's your prerogative. Do what you gotta do.

Not sure, but I think Bernie is just a copycat of Pervy. Neither one with any originality though.
