Influenza, also known as "the flu," is a very contagious lung disease that causes an average of over 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths in the United States each year. Anyone can get the flu. For most people, the flu can cause fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue.

Flu infections among the elderly and those with chronic heart or lung disease can lead to more serious complications, including hospitalization and even death.

Here's who should especially consider receiving a flu shot:

• Adults over 50 years old
• Anyone with a chronic health condition
• Pregnant women
• Healthcare workers
• Caregivers for young children or the elderly
• Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities

Even you do not fall within one of the above categories, you should still think seriously about protecting yourself from the flu this winter.

  • Getting an immunization shot isn't like getting a new couch. It's more like an act of charity for others: by innoculating yourself, you also reduce the chances that you will serve as a carrier for other people. It's more like an act of charity for others: by innoculating yourself, you also reduce the chances that you will serve as a carrier for other people. You're getting the immunization for everyone you come into contact with. That's why Suzanne's outrage about free shots going to people who can afford them is so off base. It's a perfect illustration of the right wing's inability to distinguish between private gain and public good, as well as a profound misunderstanding of public health.

  • Al I. Not Defender of Cartoon Cows

Now she brings up a weird argument about whether or not Bruce Rauner should be allowed to have a flu shot. If we say no, we've supposedly made her point, she's just looking for an appropriate means test to be given to each potential recipient before they get their flu shot. Which would be the opposite of cost effective. If we say yes, then she cluck clucks about the city giving away resources to rich people for free.

If you have a defined lease period, you don't have to give notice. Your LL can require you to renew 89 days prior, but if not renewing, has to notify you 30 days prior. But not the other way around. If no notice was given by LL of not renewing but no renewal signed, you are automatically considered month-to-month after the lease expires if you stay.

I know it won't for me the first time I see it. I am of the mindset that unless you have a designated spot, you are not able to lay claim to anything. Shoveling out a spot is just paying it forward, right?

Public Notice: The Leone Park - Beach PAC was formed today, on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014. The first council meeting was called to order at 8:00 pm at the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce office, located at 7231 N. Sheridan Road. Community Notices were posted publicly in the Leone Park - Beach community stating the upcoming election of officers and community meeting to introduce the new park advisory council. The community meeting will be held at 7231 N. Sheridan Road on Tuesday, November 4th, 2014 at 7:00 pm. This meeting is public and the entire community is invited to attend.

The primary goals of the Leone Park - Beach PAC include programs, fundraising for programs and facility/grounds improvements, increasing public safety/security and promoting Leone Park - Beach PAC.

The Leone Park - Beach PAC will be in attendance at Alderman Joe Moore's upcoming meeting with the Chicago Park District on redeveloping Leone Park - Beach at Loyola Park Fieldhouse, located at 1230 W. Greenleaf Avenue on Monday, October 27th, 2014 at 7:00 pm.

OMG what a transparent and feeble political ploy. First of all, Chicago Park District Advisory Councils are agents of and formally registered by the Chicago Park District. Therefore the Leone Park-Beach PAC is not a legitimate Park District Advisory Council. It is a small and unrecognized group of hastily convened citizens. Loyola Park, which has jurisdiction for the area named Leone Park, similar to Toby Prinz Park, has had a Loyola Park Advisory Council for decades. Bill Morton, aka Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce is well aware of that having sat at the Advisory Council meetings and planning sessions. The alleged attempt to hijack Leone Park for political purposes is pure propaganda since it is the Chicago Park District that has jurisdiction of Leone Park and not the Alderman or anyone else. Bill Morton aka Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce, through his personal participation with both the Loyola Park Advisory Council and the Willye White Park Advisory Council, has full knowledge that the newly created citizen's group has no recognition by or endorsement of the Chicago Park District. It would be shameful if the little, recently formed citizen's group is willing to scuttle plans to develop a Nature Center, as will be proposed by the Chicago Park District, in order to make false accusations and sling mud in anticipation of the February 2015 Aldermanic election in the 49th Ward. Shame, shame.

  • Greg626 Take it easy but take it

Craig can you tell us who heads the faux advisory council or is membership of this ostensibly public service group secret? I hope they won't attend the public meeting on Monday wearing hoods and ski masks to conceal their identities. That would not be very open and transparent.

How much to charge for a garage parking space

I am contemplating renting a space in my garage near Pratt and Ashland. What would the "going" price be listed at - if I decide to move forward?

  • If it's just enough room to park one car, then $100 - $125.

  • We live very near those intersections and charge $150. They get their own one-car garage with remote door opening. We've lived here for six years and each tenant has been great and stayed for at least two years. The first two left because they moved out of state. Very pleased with current tenant.

Helicopters Over Rogers Park (The Park)

Does anyone know the reason for helicopters over Rogers Park (The Park) and southwest, maybe to Touhy and California (from my vantage point in the park), between 4 and 4:30 this afternoon.

  • Darius-- I'm in the park several times a day. It is great.
Robin-- Our sense of privacy and safety is based on two dimensions. We normally only have to watch our backs. Our front and left and right take care of themselves. Surveillance from above violates that norm, which is precisely why cops and the media use helicopters.

If I do drive, I'm just worried about the commute. How do the commutes compare: between Rogers Park and UChicago; Logan Square and UChicago; West Town and UChicago? Are there other neighborhoods that might be affordable that also have off street parking (in the $1000 range).

I looked up the commutes and google says 30 minutes for all of them. I am skeptical about this as google always says 30 minutes for commutes around Boston, where I currently live, and those end up being more like 40-45 minutes.

Thank you! I appreciate all of your feedback.

It would probably be good to avoid common Chicago abbreviations since a non-Chicagoan like the original poster won't know what you mean, such as LSD = Lake Shore Drive.

  • "Metra was designed . . . " um, no
The several different commuter train companies, with their several histories, were consolidated. Idiosyncrasies and all. The Northwestern runs its trains on the left, not the right; The I.C. is the last electric inter-urban to run across a state line; etc.

Please join me this Monday to learn about and contribute to the effort to redevelop Leone Beach Park and Fieldhouse. The meeting will take place Monday, October 27th, 7:00 p.m. at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse, 1230 W. Greenleaf Ave, 2nd Floor Sky Room.

I am hosting this meeting so you can hear from community members and the Chicago Park District on possible ways we to make this underused park and fieldhouse a new asset for Rogers Park residents.

Leone Beach Park is located at Touhy Avenue and the lakefront. It includes a beach, a playground close to Sheridan Road, and a 114-year-old building that has been used as a park fieldhouse for most of its existence. It is also the northern gateway in Chicago for the Lake Michigan Water Trail.

A number of ideas for redeveloping the Leone facility have been offered over the years. This current conversation began last year as part of a proposal brought up during my Participatory Budgeting (PB) process. While the proposal didn't fit into PB at the time, interested community members kept the conversation going.

Park District Superintendent Mike Kelly is very supportive of exploring a redevelopment plan for the fieldhouse and surrounding area and has committed members of his planning staff to developing a plan with my community.

This is where you come in. Some of the community members who have been working with my office and me want to share with you their ideas for Leone Beach and Park and get your feedback and ideas.

Ideas for the park include improving the facilities for lifeguards and the Junior Lifeguard Program to preserve and enhance the program, landscaping that better reflects the natural landscape of the lakefront, a kayak launch and storage facilities, event space and room for educational programming about Lake Michigan's ecosystem. You'll hear more on Monday. The working group and I want to hear your ideas, and to get you involved in bringing new life to this wonderful community resource.

The Leone Park Fieldhouse has a long history in our community. Built in 1900 as a water pumping station for the Rogers Park Water Company (see photo on my post above), it was purchased by the City of Chicago in 1907 and leased to the City's Bureau of Parks and Recreation in 1919. From 1919 until the construction of the Loyola Park Fieldhouse in 1950, the Leone Fieldhouse was the primary park building on the Rogers Park lakefront.

The building became best known as the home of the Junior Lifeguard Program (see photo on my post above), which was led for 40 years by Park Supervisor Sam Leone, for whom the beach and park were named. Over the last few decades the building has fallen into a state of disrepair and is now used primarily as lifeguard boat storage during the off season.

  • Greg626 Take it easy but take it

What a great idea for enhancing our Ward, improving lifeguard and safety capabilities, adding value to a historical building, expanding educational and recreational options for both children and adults. This will be a pure participatory community effort bringing together multiple ideas, interests, talents and resources. This sort of activity is symbolic of Rogers Park in general; the bringing together of multiple diverse elements to strengthen and improve the community as a whole.

The 2015 City Budget

What do you think about the 2015 budget released by the mayor last week? It is a non-controversial, feel good budget crafted to vote in before the election in February.

The budget doesn't address money for additional police officers and we still have no plan to deal with city pension debt. There were a few service additions added - rat abatement. pot hole repairs, etc., to superficially please voters who have been grumbling about the lack of city services for the last four years.

How will the alderman vote on the 2015 budget? Will he ask for our feedback? Are there ward budget meetings planned?

  • Hugh M. Nuclear Scientist

Just wait and see what happens next year, when everyone gets their property tax bill and it is thousands of dollars more than the year before.

But then, the elected officials will have three more years in office at that point. That is why we have a "feel good" budget being voted on right before the election. SPeak out now people or you will be paying lots more in taxes one year from now.

  • Suzanne Devane Ward 49 Republican Committeeman

Most City Council members have no interest in dealing with the structural deficits facing this city until after their re-elections in March. They will then have to deal with reality because the City's schools are already borrowing 2 months of next year's budget to fund current operations. As this reckless spending continues, it will be more expensive to borrow to finance current operations. The conundrum for these elected officials is that they have to deal with the problem without saying they caused the problem.

Like any overdrawn spender knows, one ultimately has to start cutting expenses. Our elected officials need to begin talking about the hard choices we face.

We found this little kitty underneath our back stairs and aren't sure what to do with him. Is he/she yours? Near Sheridan and Pratt. You can text/call me at 312-725-0130 if he/she is yours and/or you want to help me route him somewhere.

If not yours, I'm open to suggestions on what we should do with him. I assume shelters don't intake directly. Does that mean we should call 311, or do we have to bring him down to CACC ourselves?

Still, Al didn't say that it's going to take place on the patio. He probably doesn't know. Vanessa, maybe your condo board should contact the owners of Hard Water if the noise persists. They seem like a nice couple.

we had a forced entry burglary over on N Eastlake Terrace this weekend. no one was hurt, but it's definitely scary.
As a note of personal failing, I heard loud noises and activity late Saturday night, but I figured it was just people coming back from the bars or something. Unfortunately, it's a hard lesson

  • Steven J -- The more confused, sleepy people we have shooting at they're not sure what, the safer I'll feel.
    not

Glad the wide awake and legally armed can shoot back.

Found Pre paid card

Hi Everyone,

Found a pre-paid Visa card on Winthrop just south of Hollywood this morning, 10/22.

Hopefully it is a card that was used up and carelessly tossed on the ground. (I could not get in touch with customer service via the number on the back, as I obviously don't have the appropriate pin number).

Was going to shred it, but in the off chance it has someone's living expenses on it, wanted to check here first.

So if it is yours, email with the last 4 digits and I'll get it back to you.

What's up on Juneway?

Tons o' cops, crime scene tape in the alley between Paulina and Marshfield, many lookyloos but no ambulance. Listening to scanner but not figuring out the story... anyone know what happened?

  • So he wasn't shot in the leg, he was shot in the foot. And he wasn't shot in the foot, but in the toe. Good to have this cleared up, because we all know that toes are not part of the leg. Sometimes I leave my toes in New York City when I return to Chicago.
Was he shot by an arm, by a hand or by a finger, I wonder?

  • d3 NOH

another shooting right at the "problem building" .... how many in one year is that? and what is the city doing about this on an active basis?

The alley behind jonquil/ashland looks like an open air drug market every night of the week... what are they doing about that?
It's good they sit around at the corners.

People's Gas No Parking Signs

I am fairly new to the neighborhood, and I noticed yesterday the no parking signs taped to the trees from People's Gas. Of course, I was first annoyed that this sign would stay up for two weeks. It's not secret that it's already hard enough to find parking (I average 30 minutes each time) , but this morning, I woke up early to move my car, and every other car was still there! And later in the day, there were still lots of cars parked right in frommt of the signs. Do these signs not really mean anything, even though they threaten towing? Also, I noticed the signs don't have.a permit number printed on them.. Does this make them invalid?

  • shawn m Moving from apt to apt in RP

The People's Gas signs don't require a permit number. Not sure why the other cars hadn't moved. The signs have dates written on them, is it possible the construction date had ended but they forgot to take down the signs?

  • daveP been around awhile

They are horrible about taking down the signs after they expire. I've been taking down all the expired ones I see when out walking my dog.

Just saw some the other day that expired in august!

People don't look at the dates, they just see the no parking, and don't park there.

  • Leelee Dog lady, cat lady, juicer extraordinaire

They put up signs willy nilly with no regards for the residents. They cordon off blocks at a time, in different directions, don't work for a week, need it for a few days, and then leave the signs up, with the expiration dates still a week out!

    Thanks, daveP, for...

Thanks, daveP, for taking down the expired ones. I do, too... but a lot if see are up, with good dates and not a PG person in sight.

    :<

My favorite thing is they do the above, FINALLY leave, and repave, then are back in a month chewing up the new road! What the???

I'm glad for the new infrastructure, but would really appreciate PG giving a bit more of a hoot about residents.

2:30 AM on 10/13

I was woken up at 2:30 in the morning on Monday 10/13 to the sound of a women screaming for help. I live on a high floor in a high rise and sadly was not able to do anything. It sounded like she was near Berwyn and Kenmore area. I did see several cops flood the area a few minutes later. Does anyone know what happened?

  • So I just saw this post in the crime reports, I wonder if this is what I heard:

Robbery: Strongarm: no weapon / Sidewalk
    5200 block N. Kenmore Ave. October 13, 2014 @ 2:30 a.m.

  • Ricky Coogin North Andersonville

I wish there were more details about these crimes.

I don't care if the referendum on mental health appropriations is "fishing",inquiry or just spitting in the wind. I'll vote yes for every penny spent to help people who suffer from disease that has rendered them untouchable by most of society. Without public funding for mental health care people you and I know would be left with no help of any kind. Homelessness, drug addiction and crime often have roots in mental illness as victims of these illnesses try to cope day to day. I'm not saying that all criminals are victims of mental illness. I amm saying that without help, most of them will end up being victims or perpetrators. They really haven't got any other choice. This could happen to anybody.

Why We Have Rats

I took these photos this morning. The tenants in this building (the northwest corner of Devon & Fairfield) don't care how they dispose of their garbage. I took these photos this morning. The tenants in this building (the northwest corner of Devon & Fairfield) don't care how they dispose of their garbage. Some of it is tossed out of the second and third floor windows above the dumpsters. I once saw a bag in mid-flight but couldn't tell which floor it came from. Much of it comes from tenants who toss their bags on top, behind, or next to the dumpster. The maintenance man is always cleaning up the alley, but he wasn't there today. And, as of half an hour ago, there's even more garbage on the ground, more bags tossed into the alley. Recently someone has begun to leave newspaper with torn bread and what appears to be cheese on top the dumpster several times a week. This may be poison (note the dead rat between the bags) and would explain the two dead squirrels and dead pigeon I've found in the last week. Squirrels are always on these dumpsters because there's always food here. The city has repeatedly cited this building but the tenants continue to dump their garbage like this. (I picked up the rat and the bread and cheese after I took the pictures.) I heard on tonight's news that Orkin has named Chicago the city with the nation's worse rat problem (based on the number of citizen complaints). The tenants here are one reason that's probably true.

Alderman Moore, at the budget hearing for the Health Department, scheduled for October 28, 2014: let's

1. Make sure there is money allocated for medications for patients who go to the city mental health clinics - I checked the 2015 budget and there is no line item for medications. Uninsured people who go to the six remaining city mental health clinics need medications and have always been able to get them through the city mental health clinics (I checked prior budgets and medications have always been included in past budgets)

2. Advocate for additional dollars to be spent on mental health care specifically to re-open the clinic on Howard Street in Rogers Park.

3. Also, let's advocate for the city to become a preferred Medicaid provider to bring in revenue to the city mental health clinics.

4. Request a specific report about city residents living in Ward 49 who were patients at the Howard St. Clinic and what happened to each and every one of them.

5. Request additional dollars for a second and third psychiatrist .

  • Lucas G “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”

I agree with all five requests for the 2015 city budget.

Also, I believe there should be money set aside to do an independent study about how to leverage and maximize dollars from every level of government (city, county, state and federal) to better serve Chicago residents.

I should have said, in regards to funding mental health services - I believe there should be money set aside to do an independent study about how to leverage and maximize dollars from every level of government (city, county, state and federal) to better serve Chicago residents.

Does anyone know when the budget hearing will take place for the public to ask questions/make recommendations?

Traffic hazard

This area recently seemed to get cleared up after some discussions I had with the Family Dollar and Starbucks manager recently.
Guys in orange vests collecting for their favored charity (themselves). Then acting out due to intoxication or whatever.
This guy is not safe and he could cause a serious traffic accident, pictured here is right at the Chicago/Evanston border.

  • Mac I complain on EB on the regular.

Interesting that this guy is on the chicago side. Rogers park has a degree of tolerance for this type of behavior . It is a hazard

  • It's worse by the dreaded Elston/diversey/Logan area, which is why I try to stay away.

Cermak Market?

Anyone got the scoop on the old Dominicks on Ridge? Looks like they're doing a bunch of work there and I heard it was gonna be a grocery called Cermak produce or something like that. Thanks.

  • Ooh, that's lucky! I would have loved to have a Cermak Market there (of course, now that I live in Bridgeport I've got several...). It's a good store.

  • JCV My head hurts.

That's good to know, Kelly! We've been missing having a grocery store option at that location!
