Every day this week in the early morning before the real rush hour, as I leave our neighborhood to go downtown I have noticed dump trucks driving from our neighborhood down Sheridan Road and they are getting on Lake Shore Drive southbound going past the Michigan Avenue exit. I am on the phone w/311 now but who is doing this? It is Loyola? I saw an empty trailer drive down by the college this morning, but I can't figure out if it is this or maybe the Pritzker Parking Garage? This morning I even saw two on LSD going northbound. I really don't enjoy having big semis pull up behind me on Lake Shore Drive. Their plates are marked "ST" which is for Semi Trailer, but it has been too dark to read any company info on their doors. Only one today had a name on it's trailer part - Magnum. Be careful driving out there.

This Day in History - A Serial Killer in Rogers Park

Thirty years ago today, on August 21, 1984, the dismembered remains of sixteen-year-old Danny Bridges were discovered in a trash dumpster, behind an apartment building at 1632 W. Sherwin.

Police arrested Larry W. Eyler, a 31 year-old house painter in his apartment at 1628 W. Sherwin.

In September 1983, while Eyler lived in a house on north Greenview, he was questioned as a "prime suspect" in the murders of eight young men, and was later arrested and held on $1million bail, as a suspect in the killing of Ralph Calise, who lived at 5014 N, Hermitage.

Eyler's bond was reduced to $10,000, when a judge ruled that the evidence against Eyler had been obtained improperly, and so could not be used against him. Eyler then posted $1000, and was released.

On June 1st, Eyler moved into a four-room apartment on the first floor, at 1628 W. Sherwin. It was in the bedroom of that apartment, where Eyler raped, tortured, and then repeatedly stabbed Danny Bridges to death. After dragging the body into the bathroom, he proceded to dismember it in the bathtub, using a hacksaw.

Eyler then painted the walls of the bedroom, to cover the blood stains, but police were able to recover the evidence beneath the fresh paint, using a new technology, called "Luminol".

After a lengthy and gruesome trial, a jury found Eyler guilty, and he was sentenced to death on Oct 3, 1986.

In 1991, he tried unsuccessfully, to save himself from Death Row by promising to admit to at least 17 more murders, and revealing the name of his accomplice, but on March 6, 1994, Eyler died in prison, from AIDS-related complications.

After his death, his lawyer revealed the names of 21 of Eyler's victims, as Eyler had requested, but she would not reveal the name of his accomplice.

Places to park?

Hello all! I recently moved to Roger's Park a week ago. I was wondering if there were any sure places to park my vehicle? I don't drive it a whole lot but sometimes work requires me to drive out of the area so I can't necessarily get rid of it at the moment. I am awful at finding places to park. Do you have any suggestions?

Hahaha. Welcome and good luck. My one piece of general advice would be to find a block with a higher percentage of single family homes. Owner-occupied housing also "feels" safer. If there are, say, 300 rental units on one block (not unreasonable on some blocks), it's going to be a mad scramble. There are also streets off the beaten path that you'll discover when exasperated--a block that doesn't go anywhere, has no through traffic, like a street that's interrupted by a school or church. Telling you where these are would ruin you of the frustrating but fun experience of being a Rogers Parker (or maybe I don't want to give up the secrets).

One final clue: the three hour parking spots, if you're a commuter, are a godsend. If you have a flexible schedule, 3 hour parking from 9 am-9 pm means, sometimes, if you get home from work at 6, you can stash it there until noon, wait until everybody goes to work (if you're able to wait) and move to a more permanent spot when other commuters leave for work. If you have the means, buying a spot can be the best option, even though alley parking is a nightmare when winter gets bad.

Finally, know that you don't suffer alone. My wife and I moved here a year and a half ago and I sold my car because the thought of finding two parking spots seemed impossible and ridiculous. Now that I have a job about 20 miles away, we juggle who needs to transit commute and who needs to drive. It's frustrating, but it's the price we pay living so close to the lake and far away from a highway.

One specific spot if you live in south rogers park (near loyola): around the Loyola stop, there is actually TONS of parking. There are many weirdly shaped blocks in strange one-way configurations in a square between Glenwood, Sheridan, Loyola Ave, and Devon. Oddly enough, right alongside the train tracks (near the CVS) there are legal spots often.

LAST TIP: if you see orange street cleaning signs and you have a parking spot on the correct side of the street, do whatever you can to not move.Street cleaning day will just suck. (The price we pay for clean streets). Heck, if you find yourself screwed on street cleaning day, drive to Evanston or further into Edgewater and take the CTA in that day. Or just bite the bullet and pay for parking in a garage (Loyola, Rogers near Jarvis). Same for when it snows.

Since you don't drive your car a lot, pay close attention to the street cleaning schedule so that you move your car when necessary. You'll find the schedule here:

Need AC and antique frame repaired

I have two household in need of repair. One is a built-in air conditioner that suddenly zonked out. The other is an antique, wood frame that has a crack in it. I'd like to find a skilled craftsperson to glue the crack, and someone to look at the air conditioner. If the AC needs to be replaced, I can accept that. It would be great if it could be got working again. The frame can't be replaced. If it's not a neighborhood business or entrepreneur, that's OK.

Criminal justice system or is Tourism Chicago ' s biggest industry.

Both are huge. Tourism includes multiple honeypots like Navy Pier, pro sports venues the jobs it creates. Can the same be said for Chicagos criminal justice system.
Prisons like sports venues have a gate for attendance tracking. Players get contacts and sentences depending on what side of this debate you interpret the word "player".

Deadly Mosquitoes Invade West Rogers Park

A woman in her 70s who lives in West Rogers Park was diagnosed with the city's first case of West Nile virus, officials said. Of the more than one hundred victims last year, around ten percent died. Technicians will be spraying Zenivex to poison the mosquitoes. You should stay indoors and close your windows while spraying is underway as an extra precaution, city officials said. Be careful because one bite can kill you. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140819/norwood-park/city-spray-far-northwest-side-for-mosquitoes-wednesday

I found a bicycle dumped in the alley last night by some garbage cans. I left it for a few hours to see if it was still there at midnight. It was so I brought it in for the night knowing salvage junkers would take it in the a.m. After having a good look at it today, I'm pretty sure it was ditched because it is no longer functional. The reason I suspect it was previously stolen is because of its condition. Rear break broken at handle, rear wire and pad. Left peddle mutilated. Tires (tubes?) pretty flat. Chain is off and hasn't been maintained. There are other scrapes dings and bruises that show signs of neglect and abuse. So it looks like the bike served its purpose and was subsequently abandoned. Picture below, it is a men's 26" Magna, Great Divide Style, 21 Speed. Besides needing some work, it looks like a decent bike.

So, is there a lost/stolen bike registry or some place where I can go to find its owner? I don't quite know what to do in this situation. If I don't find the owner I might take it to Robert's Cycle to have it fixed and give it to someone in need. Thoughts?

Impatiens problem

Probably I am the last person to find out about this--but about half of my front yard impatiens just turned bad and died. The problem appears to be downy mildew. It can spread quickly, even by the wind. So if your plants are also affected, dig them up and put them in plastic bags and discard. Do not compost them. Apparently it is best to try to plant something else in that spot for at least a couple of years.

Helen your plant may have had downy because definitely the humidity is a factor in causing the powdery mildew. I will try something else in that spot next year since apparently my use of "mono-culture agriculture" is at fault. But when you have limited space and difficult conditions it is a little difficult to rotate your crops. I've always rotated my backyard vegetables as much as possible, but did not know as an unsuspecting gardener that I had to do it with my flowers as well!

This is my first post and since starting to read everyblock in September - I feel that the people who participate really care about this community and eachother in it as a whole.
Indian Boundary Park is an amazing sanctuary in the city and i feel lucky to live close and be able to take my dogs for walks in the park several times a day (and always clean up afterwards).
Which brings me to this question:
What do you do about the people who dont leash their dogs (and there are plenty in the am)? My dogs are well trained but we do NOT let them off leash ever because of the great variables that can happen. However - other dog owners do not follow the same decorum.
We have called the police (who show up - but typically after they have time to leash up), we have asked (typically with a response of "find a different part of the park" or we just get ingnored or a snide comment.
So I ask all of you -- What would you do?
How would you handle this?
Is there anything more I can do? (and no - i wont try to find a different park)
Thank you for you replies and help!

I see many people with dogs not on leashed and I along with my neighbors also have reported this to the police. I think all it would take if the police would catch and ticket just one person this might help. These people are think their dogs won't run off and possible hurt other people especially children. It is amazing to me that these type of people are selfish and think the part is for them and them alone

  • I still say lazy dog owners who won't take the time to socialize and "train" their dogs are the problem. You blame the owners who spend the time and money to that instead of yourselves. I don't go to IBP and I won't now that I know what kind of dog owners do there. LAZY ONES!!

Mixed results around cats but clearly capable with fellow dogs and children, behaves well and calm while driving. She is spayed and has rabies and distemper completed. Weighs about 42 pounds. This morning at 6:20 vans arrived at the Republic Bank parking lot and began banging together tents and a stage and setting up chairs for a day-long party celebrating Indian Independence Day. The event will include live entertainment and, of course, loudspeakers. The party will begin around 11 and is expected to last until at least 7 pm.The man in charge told me that the alderman had signed off on it and if I had any complaints I could take them up with her. When I told him that this is a residential area, he replied "So what?." This is absolutely the last straw for me. Neither the alderman nor the event's organizers had the courtesy to advise the neighbors in advance about this event, which belongs in the park, not in a residential area. Complaints about noisy events in the parking lot are met with indifference by the alderman and the bank. All anybody cares about is money. I think she forgets that commercial and political interests have to be balanced with quality-of-life issues for residents. I am tired of the high-handedness, of the lack of communication, of being expected to accept whatever she and powerful commercial interests decide to do. She was elected alderman, not queen. I think this is what you get when all the political power in the ward is in one family. I've been ambivalent about the alderman for a long time but this is the last straw. My home will be under siege all day. I want a new alderman. I've just learned that there is a credible potential candidate and am trying to meet with this person in the next few days. We need change in this ward. We replaced the alderman last time, but we didn't change the system. If the ward is going to work for everybody, the system has to change, too.

If you live in an area of the ward that gets 6 lousy swipes instead of 5 like in my area, you may have a chance to gets things cleaned up. I thought Debbie would do a better job keeping the ward clean but the neighborhood is just as filthy as it was when Stone was the alderman.
After reviewing the street sweeping schedule, I noticed that the areas around Devon get fewer sweeps then the areas north of Pratt which are primarily residential. Considering the shear # of events and people in the Devon shopping strip one would think it would be the other way around.
I realize that Devon is swept daily, but there are no extra services for the residents living on the streets that border this very busy shopping district. All the streetscapes in the world cannot hide the fact that the area is filthy and needs a better sanitation system than what is in place today.

Divvy bike-share expansion delayed until spring

Looks like Divvy bikes won't be coming to Rogers Park till 2015

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-divvy-new-stations-bikes-met-0821-20140821-story.html

Chicago's Divvy bicycle-sharing program plans to add 175 stations and 1,750 bikes in the spring, the city will announce Thursday, a behind-schedule expansion that will extend the program as far north as Touhy Avenue and as far south as 75th Street.

The expansion, originally planned for this year, was delayed because of the bankruptcy of a company that supplied equipment to a Divvy contractor.

Montreal-based Public Bike System Co., or Bixi, announced in January that it was filing for bankruptcy protection...

Being in a Gang is not illegal.

I was informed by the Alderman's office the other day that being in a violent street gang is not illegal. This would be one of the reasons it has gotten so bad. I was informed by the Alderman's office the other day that being in a violent street gang is not illegal. This would be one of the reasons it has gotten so bad. The police may know who these guys are, know where they live and hang out, but have their hands tied until something like a shooting actually happens. Unfortunately, by then it is too late. Apparently, being in a violent street gang is protected under the constitution's first amendment - Freedom of Assembly. I'm sure when that was written, this is exactly what they had in mind - protecting thugs who plot to commit crimes and violent acts destabilizing the neighborhood. Does this amendment also protect terrorist cells? Because that's another group that is just getting a bad rap in this country. Maybe we should make it harder for the police to arrest them too.

  • It doesn't really matter what laws are on the books. If judges don't prosecute and give longer sentences for violent crimes committed, which they don't, nothing will change.

What if someone was a gang member as a teenager, but left when they got older? Determining membership vs active membership would be difficult.

Also, deciding what creates a gang could be very difficult. Back in 2001 the Illinois State Police classified the local Communist Party as a gang, based on the activity of one member. If that one member committed a violent crime, in theory everyone in the Communist Party could be arrested.

Navy vet looking for work

Hey my friend just got out of the Navy and is looking for a job in the restaurant/bar/pet industry. She has 10 years experience as a waitress and can handle two large pitbulls. Does anyone need good help from an armed forces veteran?

  • S&C is that huge company plant at the corner of Pratt and Ridge, main entrance on Ridge. I believe they are the largest industrial employer in RP. They occupy a vast space, but apparently they are even bigger than they seem, with most of their facilities below ground level. Their web site has lots of information about jobs and careers:

Call me a racist, but......

A big part of the outbreak of violence in Rogers Park is caused by landlords who do not carefully screen or monitor their tenants.

.....Bad buildings house these criminals.

.....Bad buildings offer them a place to hide.

.....Bad buildings store their guns and bullets.

We need to make a list of these bad buildings.

The greedy landlords need to be taken to Housing Court.

.....Hefty fines may encourage them to be a responsible landlord.

======================================================

Clarification needed :

Is there a limit on how many " Section 8 Voucher Holders "
can live in a particular building ?

There is a new term for the old " Section 8 " program.

Does anyone know the new name of this rent assistance program ?
.......

It has been suggested that certain greedy landlords pack
their building with Section 8 tenants.

.....No background check or references required.
........Just show a voucher and you are in.

I realize that many Section 8 Voucher Holders are decent
people who are trying to improve their living conditions.

But, many gang members live / hang out in the apartments
of the Voucher Holder.

If CHA ( ? ) would limit how many vouchers can occupy
a building, maybe that building would not be a gang clubhouse.

If CHA would more aggressively monitor the buildings where
their clients live, conditions would improve.

If a landlord is not responsible ( allows anti-social behavior ),
CHA should revoke his license to house Section 8 tenants.

Bad landlords are only interested in getting more money.
........( at the neighbors' expense ? )

Hit them where it hurts.

.....Take away their inflated rent income.
.....Hit them with hefty Housing Court fines.

  • Suzanne, the shooting incidents we've experienced over the last few months don't appear to have anything to do with housing vouchers. Unless you can actually demonstrate a connection, you're just taking advantage of tragic shooting incidents to score an ideological point against public housing.

Not sure how to be proactive on this, there must be some way of determining bad landlords and voucher violations, but this is the way to report it.

Movie/TV Filming?

Sorry not RP specific but wondering if anyone knows what was being filmed today on Sheridan at Greenview in Evanston? Saw the production company setting up on my way to work this am and saw them tearing down on my way home tonight. Curiosity gets the best of me sometimes!

  • Kyros C. New York Native - Loving Rogers Park & Edgewater

There are currently five TV shows and one movie production, which have been given permits to film in Chicago -

TV Series: "Chicago Fire" "Chicago PD" "Empire" "Shameless" "Sirens"
    Movie Production: "Sinister 2"

What you saw is likely related to one of these productions.
Otherwise, if the effort appeared to be on a smaller scale (without a major name-brand studio logo on the trucks), it might just be a commercial, music, or instructional video.

Burger King at Gateway Center

The sign out front indicates it will be opening soon for you fast-food junkies. There's another sign on the front door on the Clark St. side that seems to indicate they are holding interviews for employees from 11 AM - 3 PM. I don't think it indicates specific days for that.

  • Helen North of Howard for 50 + years

Robin, as some others have noted, location is important. While I would prefer Relish over a BK any day, I'm not going all the way over to California Ave. for a burger. LYFE Kitchen in Evanston, with a healthy menu, looks like it's doing well. We ate there last night. There's a menu just for vegetarians and vegans. (Not the one I ordered from.)

  • First time since it,s opening I haven't seen the drive thru absolutely packed.

Ace Hardware Building To Be Demolished For New Condo Development

After several years and two previous failed attempts, the old Ace Hardware building at 5820-5826 Clark St. has finally been sold. It’s been empty since the store closed in 2011. The first proposed sale would have brought a Whole Foods, which, when the sale fell through, fueled constant rumors over the next few years that […]

The looters and rioters aren't trying to change anything. I think they are exploiting a chaotic and unstable situation in order to get away with looting and rioting to satisfy their own personal goals and disguise that as a form of public protest. It is nothing more than criminal violent activity pretending to be political speech.

Are you a Rogers Park artist, designer or just have a knack for slick sketching? I need your help coming up with a bike rack logo that welcomes people to our neighborhood.

The bike racks are being funded through the 49th Ward's Participatory Budgeting process in which residents of my ward vote on how to spend $1 million of the ward's capital infrastructure fund. Residents in 2010 voted to fund 15 "artistic multifunctional bike racks." However, the City of Chicago's Office of Budget and Management, which has final discretion over the funding of City infrastructure projects, did not approve the project, as it had serious concerns about the cost of the racks as well as insurance and oversight issues.

Instead, the City's Budget Office approved my request to use the money allocated for the artistic bike racks to install nearly 100 of the traditional City bike racks throughout our neighborhood. The City's Budget Office also agreed to my request to set aside a portion of the money allocated to include a distinct logo design on some of the racks that will be located at several community gateways and high traffic spots.

I'm looking for Rogers Park artists and designers to come up with ideas for the logo design.

Several Chicago neighborhoods use custom logos on their bike racks to build community identity, improve the look of commercial streets, and add a little local creativity to an otherwise purely functional object on the public way. For some examples of bike racks from the Uptown, Wicker Park/Bucktown and Lakeview neighborhoods, see the photos posted below.

The competition is open to any Rogers Park artists or designer. You must either live in Rogers Park or have a studio in Rogers Park (defined as the area bound by the Evanston border on the north, Devon Avenue on the south, Lake Michigan on the east and Western Avenue on the West)

For full details, visit:

http://www.ward49.com/site/epage/154516_322.htm#PB

  • Joe Moore Alderman, 49th Ward

Bob Fuller on my staff who is coordinating this competition is an avid cyclist. We'll also ask organizations, such as the Active Transportation Alliance, to review the final designs for functionality.

  • Excellent. There was a lot of discussion about this when other 'hoods started putting them up. Refreshing to hear about a program where the intended beneficiaries are consulted. Cheers!

Pothole repair - Loud metal cover over pothole at Berwyn/Sheridan

The city recently put three giant metal plates over pot holes on Berwyn between Sheridan & Kenmore. The plates make a bang every time a car or bus (especially loud when it's a bus) go over it. Does anyone know how long I can expect to deal with listening to cars crash over the metal plates?

  • I know its a super annoying situation, but this popped into my head when I saw this post. From animated movie, circa 1981 called Heavy Metal. :)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNG_Kn-m73M

  • Nan

This sounds like a temporary fix - but if it's causing noise that's loud enough to interfere with sleep, you should contact the Alderman's office. Pot holes large enough to require a cover should have been filled long ago.

Looking for vet recommendation

Hi all,

Just moved back to the area with my two cats, and one of them is acting funny and I'm afraid she may be sick. I would appreciate any vet recommendations for affordable veterinary care...a plus if they also use holistic and alternative medicine.

Thanks!

  • I took my cat to Dr. Mitchell when he worked at Jewell Animal Hosp in Lincoln Square and he was great. I see now that he is at Pets First. I can't speak to that clinic specifically but Dr. Mitchell is great, he thoroughly explained my cat's heart condition and kidney problems to me and helped me understand all the options. I recommend Dr. Mitchell.

  • For years, my cats have been tended to at Near North Animal Hospital on Wells, just north of the corner of Wells & Division.

Thank you SO much for the alert of animal abuse

Dear friend: This is a really valuable post. Here is a suggestion: as hard as it may be
to watch, try keeping out of sight and follow this horrible person home. Get an address.
Then, you can have better leverage when you put in your complaint. There are plenty
of animal advocates out there that will be happy to rescue this dog - Pit Bulls take a
really bad rap, most of the time. I wonder why?
Signed:
Emily

  • What I don't understand is all these people that have seen this guy abusing this dog and no one has taken a photo. Who doesn't have a cell phone these days?

  • Mac I complain on EB on the regular.

    Who doesn't call the cpd?
