When to call 911/311 to report buildings...

I'm sure this has been posted and re-posted but I want to call out the 311 to report the landlord/building as having tenants that are gang members.

Other neighborhoods on Everyblock have mentioned that they started "phone trees" to communicate information that needed to get around. Might not be a bad idea at all to note suspicious behavior etc.

When to call 911

When to call 911

If you see any gang criminal activity such as drug dealing, fighting, breaking into garages, etc.. please call 911 and report the activity.
If you observe multiple gang members loitering on a street corner, in a park, etc.. Call 911 and report it.
If you observe gang members drinking in public call 911 and report it.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 911.

When to call 311

If there are gang members living in a building call 311 and ask to report the building to the troubled buildings department and they will issue viloations to the building owner and pressure them to evict the gang members or the landlords will receive fines and possibly lose their properties.
If you observe any gang graffiti please call 311 or go to www.cityofchicago.org and report it. They will remove it free of charge. Even if it is not on your property just call 311 and give them the address. Graffiti makes the neighborhood look bad and gangbangers like to hang in areas that look unkept.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 311.

  • Feihong EveryBlock developer, Lincoln Square dweller

@John Warner: Ugh, that's not very efficient, but good to know. Wish that city departments shared their information with each other better.

All you need to include in the email to graffiti@caps24.org is the address and photo, right?

  • John Warner 12 year resident - RPPL - Beat Facilitator 2431

Feihong - Unfortunately no - that goes directly to 311 and by passes the 24th District. What the 24th District is doing is something totally separate that 311. You still have to send the pics to graffiti@caps24.org for CPD to get them.

Has anyone tried to negotiate peace between our warring factions.

Considering the human carnage left in the wake of the 15 yr old feud. Has anyone from the police, politicians or anyone else reached out to those feuding? There have Ben attempts to profit yes. The cease fire peeps and folks get involved once money is involved. Have there been other attempts?

  • Bruce Mayberry, Roger Parkansas

When I do Government work and am paid by the tax payer there are reports to file forms to fill out and accountability. Cease fire got 1 million in funding. There is no accountability. If this is not a recognized program and cease fire coordinates with known gangs then they are guilty of collusion and conspiracy. One thing the working tax paying private sector can tell you is that no good deed goes unpunished.

  • AWOFINC Continual Growth Through Service

Bruce once again is sharing erroneous information. You won't find many organizations that regularly receive any public funds that don't make reports to the funding source, Ceasefire included. Now that we know you are just a troll and don't actually state facts nor has an interest in the truth we'll discontinue attempting to educate you.

The Chicago Police Department is working around the clock at an aggressive strategy to prevent a repeat of the unusual spike in gun violence that has plagued our neighborhood in the last few weeks.

I attended Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy's monthly "CompStat" accountability session for north side district commanders this morning.

Though I am not able to share the details of the specific strategies employed, rest assured that 24th District Commander Thomas Waldera (see photo below) is receiving reinforcements from other Chicago Police Department units and is employing them in a comprehensive manner to prevent another outbreak of violence. The City of Evanston is also helping by redeploying some of its police officers to Howard Street.

Commander Waldera has been out in the field late into the night directing his forces.

These efforts are bearing fruit. The police have recovered six guns, some of them fully loaded, from, from suspected gang members. The individuals possessing those guns were arrested and charged.

Police also have arrested and charged an individual suspected in the March 25th shooting of a man at Ashland and Jarvis. They believe they know the identity of the other assailant and are currently searching for him.

Police also arrested an individual they suspect of being involved in the early Tuesday morning shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jonquil and Ashland. Unfortunately, they currently only have enough evidence to charge the individual with the unlawful possession of an automobile.

The police and my office cannot do it alone, however. We need the involvement of all community residents. I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For information on the time and location of the CAPS meetings and more information on the efforts of the 24th District and my office to stem the gang violence, visit;

New to RP - It was announced at my Beat meeting last Thursday night that the Commander had requested and has received extra officers for the District. I have no idea how many or if there are extra squads, but I do know that there is an increase in patrols in my beat (2431 - (Clark to the Lake and Pratt to Lunt) and the surrounding beats as well as up in NOH area. Commander Waldera has been out on most of the patrols at night to direct where the squads and officers are to go. He has been very pro-active in the situation.

Understanding the Violence in RP "The Shooters Prospective"

No pity-party needed and even if I wanted it, none of you self-righteous, holier-than-thou, silverspoon-fed m-----f----s would throw it for me.

Yeah, I'm angry.....and I should be, cause in a weird way you m-----f-----s are part of the reason why I'm out here on the hunt at 2 a.m.(I'ma get back to that in a sec). Anyway, I just popped a pill, washed it down with 80 proof and my two homies in the car with me just lit a blunt and passed it to me. The tactical plain-clothes officers are headed in for shift-change and we ain't too worried about the fat-a-- blue and whites working the graveyard shift. The 40 cal. on my lap got 16 hollow-tipped slugs and on my dead big brother, somebody from the hood that did it is gonna die tonight.

Haha, ya'll think I'ma drug-crazed thug right? Wrong!... Truth is, is that I'm hurting about what happen to my brother and my other friends in the hood, and scared it could happen to me. But the hood teaches you that you gotta use that hurt and fear to strike back, if not, then you ain't gone live long where I come from.

Funny though, how it seems like I was groomed for this moment all my life, the abuse at home, weed-smoking mama telling me I would never be sh-t, getting jumped on after school, teachers who saw only a dumb, bad kid and not understanding how to help, and you people reading this who cross the street when you see someone like me as though I'm garbage to be avoided, thereby confirming my thug identity... smh.

No blame game here though, cause when I pull this trigger tonight, I'm probably gonna be caught, and if I end up spending the rest of my life in prison, it's cool cause everything I've experienced in life told me I never had a chance anyway.

Sleep well tonight, tell yourself it was "him" who pulled the trigger not you.

My coworkers think I'm nuts lmao. I canceled my gym membership and happy to report since March 31, as of this morning, according to my doctor's scale I lost 12 pounds. My home scale says 14, but whatever.

My doctor was amazed. I told her I've been walking the fat away :-)

18 more pesky pounds....to reach my ultimate healthy BMI goal.

Healthcare for Medicare Recipients

Just received a postcard advertising Oak Street Health at 1541 Devon Ave. They treat only Medicare patients AND provide complimentary door-to-door rides to appointments (for eligible patients). Getting to appointments can be the most difficult thing for seniors. Pass this along to a senior you know.

Are you on Medicare/Medicaid and is a senior? Have you seen the new Seniors only doctors office located on 1541 W. Devon across from the hardware store? If not you need to, Oak Street Health is a very unique company taking on improving Older adults health by offering services that you won't find in many doctors offices. First they offer rides for seniors and as you can remember with all the crazy winter weather we had it was extremely difficult to get to your doctors appointments if you rely on the CTA to get around. Oak Street Health patients enjoyed being picked up and dropped off for their appointments. They also have a community room that all patients can come and enjoy anytime even if they just want to hangout and have coffee with friends. Plus they are able to enjoy many of the programs happening in the community room such as workouts, presentation on diabetes and other health related issues. I hope you really take a look at it if you or someone you know is a senior who is on Medicare.

  • Julie in Edgewater retired and curious

Are they affiliated with a major hospital?

  • Swedish Covenant and Weiss Memorial Hospitals.

  • I like the idea of the community room. Because social isolation is a detriment to health, especially of seniors. Conversely, having support of community can help them (and everyone) survive a health crisis. This shows that this company is thinking about more than just the medical factors in the health of their patients.

Best eating in RP (for NewToRP)

Hi guys, since NewToRP is new to RP, and since her sisters are in town, and since she had a bad experience at Giordano's last night, thought the long time locals could help her out with suggestions on neighborhood gems!

I'll through a few out:
- Heartland Cafe (long wait for the food, but great environment and good quality)
- Grill Inn for Burgers
- Common Cup for coffee
- Twisted Tappas? Okay I confess I've not eaten there myself, but I hear only great things about it :)

What would you guys put on a list of must-eat places?

The concerning thing about the potential misclassifications is that homicides are among the hardest, if not the hardest to downgrade. It's a lot easier, for example, to make an aggravated assault a simple assault or a burglary to a theft from property, both of which could take a crime from being considered serious, or index, to non-index. I realize that my point is a smoke-and-fire one, but I find it unsettling because previously there hadn't been any indication of systematic downgrading in Chicago, as opposed to New York and Milwaukee.

  • I agree, Jim. There's nothing minor about the fact that the homicides were reclassified, regardless of the mathematical scope at issue, and I was also surprised by it, since murder stats are subject to media scrutiny more than other crimes and have historically been very difficutl to manipulate. It was a spectacularly stupid thing for those police bureaucrats to do, if only because it creates skepticism in the public mind about ALL crime statistics. There's a ballooning effect: one reporter discovers 10 reclassifications for 2013. A second article inflates that to "18," so "18" will now be widely cited throughout the internet and no doubt further increased. Then public opinion shifts to "you can't trust ANY of the numbers..." So just a little bit of manipulation becomes a much bigger problem.

The grey minivan who's occupants killed 16 year old Keno Glass just a few days ago. They were "hunting" with one "game" in mind oblivious to anything else. See, the occupants realities and you guys reality will never cross. But my reality is that they could have saw me before they saw Keno.

I am one of many who live in the economically starved portions of Rogers Park where everyone wants to get out, but just trying to survive the next day, week, month consumes all your energy. Education is the way out, everyone knows this, but finding support and having opportunity to persue it is something rarely given.

So we find ways to pacify ourselves alcohol, drugs, the newest Jordans loud music, the new dance, promiscuity. All to not think about our circumstances or lack thereof.

Yeah we look rough, tough and thugged out, but theres a lot more than what meets the eye.

There are complete retards in our neighborhoods though that have given up all hope of ever be anything other than what our society has labled them. These are the shooters and killers.

Everyday, because of these people I have watch every passing car as I walk through my neighborhood because when the killers from the rival neighborhoods come "hunting" they don't care that I'm not in a gang or that I've never held a gun in my life, they don't care about my dreams and aspirations, but because I look like everyone else I become a target? I may not be a perfect, law-abiding, mainstream society citizen, I smoke weed, I listen to loud music, and I wear Jordans, but this does NOT MEAN I SHOULD DIE!

This is my reality in Rogers Park and I need you guys to understand it.

"Low income people living with lots of other low income people creates an environment where healthy economic growth is nearly impossible and crime flourishes. Everyone knows that it within an economically stable community, adequate education can be provided, and stable family structures can be established, which allow the children of this community to take advantage of the numerous resources available, thereby going forth into the world to become productive citizens of society.
In many low income communities the exact opposite has been prepetuated for generations and generations. How can a kid be expected become anything other than what he's seen in his home and in his community all his life and his mothers and fathers before him? Is he wrong for doing what humans have done throughout existence, adapt and become a part of his environment weather good or bad? Most of these kids spend 90 percent of their lives within a 6 block radius of their homes."

IMO, everyone has the right to and must be provided with the opportunity and or subsidy, if needed, for safe and affordable housing, whether it's rental or owned, The problem is concentrating subsidized/low-income housing in a single building, block or neighborhood.
Striving to create true mixed-income communities is a long term solution for all residents, especially those with the least advantages....who do and have become generationally trapped in this kind of 'poverty based' environment and economy.

This is the 900 lb. elephant in the room and it needs to be confronted

Chicago police officers under the leadership of Commander Thomas Waldera responded quickly last week to several shooting incidents in Rogers Park. Commander Waldera requested and received re-enforcements from the Chicago Police Department. The Commander has been on the streets with his tactical lieutenant each night from dusk to dawn personally directing the allocation of those officers.

Thanks to their efforts, Rogers Park experienced no shooting incidents over the weekend.

Last Thursday, a 21-year-old man was shot by an unidentified man on the 1600 block Morse Avenue Thursday night at approximately 8:00 p.m., and a 25 year-old woman was shot while sitting in her car on the 6600 block of N, Sheridan Road Friday morning shortly before 2:00 a.m.

Commander Waldera tells me police believe the Morse Avenue shooting was gang-related, the latest in a series of shootings resulting from a conflict between two factions of the same street gang. Earlier in the week one man was killed and two others were injured in what police believe to be a gang-related shooting on the 1600 block of W. Howard Street.

The police are not certain whether the Sheridan shooting was the result of the same gang conflict or a separate "road rage" incident. They are still investigating.

I have been in constant communication with Commander Waldera since last Monday's shooting incident. His hands-on and proactive response to these incidents has helped to stem the violence and prevent a further escalation of the conflict.

Police will continue to be on heightened alert this week.

If you would like more information about the police response to the recent shootings or what you can do to help stem the violence, I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

That said, we do want to stay because we love our place and I don't feel the rest of the city is much better in terms of violence. We are hopeful and we are counting on change soon. In the meantime, with the warm weather here, we will be gardening and watching out for our corner and we'll let it be known that we are staying and in it for the long haul...and continue enjoying all the good things Rogers Park has to offer.

Police taped off area around Rosehill & Hermitage

I just went for a run and saw that police had taped off the alley behind an apartment complex at Rosehill and Hermitage. There were cops all over the place and I was wondering if anyone knew what happened.

Celebrate Clark Street Event promotion

Anyone know who to contact about the Celebrate Clark Street event? I'm with Glenwood Dance Studio and my studio is hoping for a performance space to showcase our dancers.

Also if anyone has a booth they'd be willing to share with a nonprofit, we're also looking to have more of a presence at Glenwood Arts Fest.

Thanks,
Elijah

  • Nevermind, found an email for Ana Bermudez with Roger's Park Business Alliance at 773.508.5885 or email abermudez@rogers-park.com.

I'd love to hear about the booth share option though.

Joe Moore - I volunteer to sponsor a public forum for you to discuss Ward issues with residents.

Joe – As you know, there have been lots of discussions on social media these days about the state of the Ward from the surge of recent crimes, to economic development plans for our commercial corridors, to education. There have been myriad specific questions asked of you in many threads. I respectfully request that you meet with Ward residents in a public forum to discuss ALL the issues of concern and interest to YOUR constituents. I am happy to:

Joe – As you know, there have been lots of discussions on social media these days about the state of the Ward from the surge of recent crimes, to economic development plans for our commercial corridors, to education. There have been myriad specific questions asked of you in many threads. I respectfully request that you meet with Ward residents in a public forum to discuss ALL the issues of concern and interest to YOUR constituents. I am happy to:

1) sponsor this and make all arrangements for the location;
2) collaborate with your office (or the 49th Ward Democratic organization – EVEN Helen) to organize and publicize the event;
3) create a preparatory program agenda to insure you are prepared with data necessary to answer FAQ’s; and,
4) Moderate the session with a member of the 49th Ward Democratic Organization to insure that the forum runs with decorum and all resident questions are covered.

I believe it is appropriate to give you at least two to three weeks to prepare before such an event occurs. Will you agree to this public forum? If so, I will reach out to your office immediately and we can begin working on this. Thank you

The role of anyone who seeks public office is to serve the community and not just to engage in combat with members of a different political party. If Suzanne had good or better ideas of how to serve the community she would have been elected by now but it hasn’t happened. Healthy debate for the right purposes is good. But if it’s simply debate between political party dominance it doesn’t help the community. Alderman Moore has done a fine job of community service and it is independent of his party affiliation.

  • Helen North of Howard for 50 + years

Stacey, I like this comment of yours: "Officials have real jobs and actually devote their lives to public service." You probably weren't around when David Orr was our alderman, but this year he is celebrating his 35th year of Public Service. That is exactly the way he feels about it. He went on to become Cook County Clerk. I think Suzanne doesn't like him either, but he still lives in our ward and is beloved by many of us.

So disgusted!

So my sisters are in town visiting....I thought it would be a great idea to take them to Giordano's on Sheridan to experience their first Chicago deep dish. Bad idea! My sister was loving her slice of deep dish pepperoni when she discovered a cooked ROACH! We were immediately mortified! The waitress grab the plates so quickly so that we couldn't take a picture, and the manager came over to apologize.... he was truly embarrassed. He kept asking "what can I do, I'm so sorry... what can I do....do you want me to make you another pizza." We said absolutely NO NO No! And left.

We didn't make a scene, but it was soooo very disgusting. Yuck!

  • I second the recommendation for Pequod's

  • Apart Pizza is good. It's in Edgewater on Broadway, but they don't do pan or deep dish pizza. They also deliver to RP through GrubHub.

Murder rate in Rogers Park

Rogers Park has a serious uptick in murders for 2014. Summer hasn't even arrived, and we've already matched the total for 2013. We're only four months into the calendar year.

This is on track to be the worst year for murders in 5 years. This is an issue that should be front and center. Not swept under a rug.

Yet, Alderman Joe Moore is more concerned about Divvy.

I think Ald. Moore is doing a good job. I also think that he is taking a balanced approach to the issues and concerns of the neighborhood. Having discussions on Divvy is part of the balanced approach and great for Rogers Park. Becoming obsessed with one particular dynamic and complete focus on one thing leads to one becoming unbalanced - and that is not a good thing. I for one am going to tune out all of the sensationalizing of the recent events and am going to be out and about this beautiful weekend enjoying Rogers Park. The more of us out on the streets, the more it creates a positive energy and invites more of the good people to come out and feel good about our neighborhood. I definitely will include trips to Twisted Tappas, Bullhead Cantina and others. Enjoy RP this weekend if you can!

  • Part of an elected official's job is looking at the big picture. Is crime important? Absolutely! But, we also need to focus of other aspects of the neighborhood, even positive ones like increasing options for transportation and recreation in the neighborhood (Divvy), capital improvements to the neighborhood (Participatory Budgeting) and highlighting positive aspects of our neighborhood (Follow Me Friday). Being so narrow minded as to focus on one issue alone leads to neglect in other areas, which is never a good thing.

A POP in the alley between Loyola and Arthur streets?

I just heard a loud pop in the back alley after hearing what I had thought were a group of rowdy guys. Now I'm not so sure they were just clowning around. This is between Glenwood and Lakewood .

Walking is a great way to explore, stay fit and possibly lose weight if that's your goal.

You typically burn roughly 100 calories per mile at a brisk pace. I walk all over from central RP to Belmont, to West ridge to Kimball, to Evanston. A goal is to walk to the Grand red line stop in the city.

A little about me for people who may not be too open to other cultures:

I'm 33( well in a couple of months), tall and often mistaken for Aisha Tyler in which, I think, I do not favor....and a lover of life and all races, and culture.
Love my day job (working with homeless people), marketing and development.

Anyway, anyone interested? I'm thinking I want to start end of April. Hopefully, the weather is steady....

I can't make it tomorrow but next Saturday is good for me. Thanks again for pulling this together! I think it's a great idea.

I dont know all the details as yet and he is home from the hospital this morning it happened last night and as soon as I find out more i will re-post the area,he is securely asleep and I didn't want him to relive it today . So please be very conscious and be careful walking alone. I only know it was three men 2 white 1 black and in there twenty's.

I am so angry but will let god handle this. As stated in my last post, he is the most gentle caring guy . I am asking for your spiritual energy (prayer ) for my best friend ( Daniel ) that he doesn't have any head trauma ,he was hit repeatedly on his head !

“It's not enough to have lived.
We should be determined to live for something.
May I suggest that it be creating joy for others,
sharing what we have for the betterment of personkind,
bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.”

Building Condition Report Recommendations

Does anyone know of a good, affordable company or individual that can do a full evaluation of a building - e.g. evaluating the roof, electrical, heating, and water systems, and overall condition of the common areas (inside and outside) of the building - not individual units? We're a relatively small condo association and we'd like to have one done and am having a hard time finding one. We've already looked on Yelp and contacted several places, either they dealt only with individual condo inspections, were not thorough enough, or didn't return phone calls. In the case of one of the most popular companies on Yelp's list, Domicile Consulting - they were very difficult to reach - by phone or through their website. Tried contacting them for months! When I finally got them, they promised to send a draft contract out and never did. Then when I tried calling them back to remind them, still never returned my calls. I would not say I'm difficult to deal with. At any rate, I would welcome any suggestions!

  • Ann - What is the purpose of the evaluation? The company/person that you seek to hire will probably vary depending on what you need. For example, do you need the building evaluated for real estate transaction purposes, fiscal planning or are there building condition issues that need to be addressed? Are you considering improving the building somehow - new windows, mechanical system, energy efficiency, etc.? Your answers will help determine the type of evaluation that is necessary and the correct professional for the evaluation.

  • Ann

    Good Questions Chad -
We want do some proactive planning because we have an older building that is in need of repairs and we want to determine the best ways to make these repairs, get cost estimates, and create a timeline for the repairs need to be made. We want, as much as possible, to avoid being caught by surprise with a huge special assessment and/or the boiler breaking down in the middle of the winter, for example.

Cribbage anyone?

Meetup.com is remarkably devoid of any cribbage group/get together, so I thought I'd see if there are any RP folk interested in getting together, perhaps for a regular session?

- chris

  • 15-2, 15-4, and a pair is 6! Cribbage is pure poetry. I have so little free time and probably shouldn't add more to the list but I just want to say how happy I am that you're proposing a cribbage meet-up! I grew up in a rural Wisconsin tavern and spent many hours at the end if a bar challenging the old timers in cribbage. Such an awesome game.

There is new "BDK" graffiti on a sign near my home. I'm tempted to just get some paint and paint over it myself. Should I be worried about doing this for any reason? Thanks in advance for your input.

Affordable spaces for 100 guests in the Andersonville/Edgewater area?

I've seen this post before but wanted to see if anyone had any FRESH/NEW ideas of affordable spaces that would cater to a decent-sizes group to celebrate getting legally married! I wrote down every suggestion from past threads but wanted to reach out in case any of you have found another place we could consider. Thanks for your time!

  • One last update...we decided to go with Hamburger Mary's for their pricing, facilities that caters to a large number of guests, and all that comes along with it! I highly recommend working with them and their event planner, Shanna Behrend, has been a really positive experience. Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful suggestions!

Chicago Danztheatre Performance This Weekend

Chicago’s Danztheatre Ensemble is in the midst of a month long performance series that utilizes performance, visual art, film, dance and contemporary movement to explore topics related to activism and  promote change in the world around us. Lucky for us, there is one more weekend of shows coming up starting on Friday April 18th and Saturday April 19th at Ebenezer Lutheran Church at 1650 W Foster. Chicago Danztheare is the current artist resident at Ebenezer Lutheran Church and the partnership has been great for both the church as well as the artists rehearsing and performing there.
