Good Vegan on East 73rd Jeffery!

OMG! I had the lasagna, kale salad, green peas, potato salad and the corn bread. I am in love. I am a meat eater and stepped away from vegan cause the food did not taste good, but now I am in love and the food is fresh and taste like home cooking! Put a little organic butter on the corn bread and went to work. Please tell your vegan friends and treat yourself:

I'll check them out this weekend.

  • Good to know. Thanks for the recommendation. Im not a vegan or vegetarian, but i do like healthy food options. I was so happy Native Foods opened a Hyde Park location. Im glad to have another choice nearby.

  • B'Gabs Goodies is another great vegan restaurant and juice bar located at 6100 S. Blackstone Avenue in Woodlawn. The 61st Street Farmers Market at 61st and Dorchester is also a great place for fresh produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, bread, and other healthy food. The last indoor market is April 26th from 9am-2pm and the outdoor season opens May 17th and continues every Saturday until December 13th. Stop this madness of installing bike lanes in areas where there are no bikers.
Gabe Kline, the ousted previous CDOT Commissioner, admitted that they sometimes put in bike lanes where there were no bikers to "control people who are apt to break laws". Enough! Stop trying to heard us around with bike lanes like cattle in the stock yard.

Dave Smith of the Chicago Department of Transportation explains how Stony Island Avenue's eight lanes handle half of the traffic that Lake Shore Drive sees every day.
SOUTH SHORE — The Chicago Department of Transportation is considering taking traffic lanes out of Stony Island Avenue to create new bike lanes.

Among the options presented was a proposal to remove one lane from northbound side of the street to create two-way bicycle lanes separated from traffic by a thin landscaped median.

Other options included cutting one lane from both the northbound and southbound sides of the street for bike lanes protected from traffic by landscaped medians.

South Shore residents were skeptical that adding bike lanes would increase cycling on the street, and many thought removing a lane would add to congestion as rush hour traffic plods along Stony Island from the Skyway to South Lake Shore Drive.

Smith said the eight lanes of Stony Island currently handle about 35,000 cars per day, half of the 70,000 cars that travel Lake Shore Drive every day.

He said traffic studies found that cyclists do use the street to get to 71st Street and then over to the lakefront, and that the street is not safe for cycling now, with about 45 bike accidents in the last five years on Stony Island.

Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) was not immediately convinced the bike lanes would be a good idea, but was encouraged that there is a clear source of funding.

“I have not been a big proponent of it, but I will defer to the community,” Hairston said.

"Trying to compare transportation in New York and Chicago doesn't work on many levels not the least of which being that New York City has public transportation that works and serves all boroughs."

Confusing response to me, because this statement basically argues in favor of my point. Yes, NYC has public transportation that works, so we (Chicago) do have a lot of room for improvement. I suppose we could go the other way and be like Los Angeles with 17% of households without cars and, perhaps, the worst public transit system in the US.

There is a future in front of us, and it is coming - smaller cars, shared cars, better public transit and, yes, bicycles for daily transport not just for recreation.

My bet, bike lanes on Stony in 6 months; what's yours?

  • Don

Yes we do have a lot of room for improvement but I do not understand our lack of long range planning. We just completed mayor work on the Red Line and now we are talking about expanding it. Wouldn't it have made more sense, and cost much less, to have done that when the equipment and crews were there?

My bet bike lanes on Stony Island will not be installed south of 67th Street.

problem business @ 75th & Coles

Have you had a bad experience or seen bad things happening at the small "restaurant" on the northeast corner of 75th & Coles? After the proprietor threatened community gardeners with violence and vandalism, another neighbor observed someone leaving the store with a marijuana cigarette that they purchased there. If you have feedback about this store, let us know - it could be useful in building a case to the city to get this business cleaned up or shut down.

Elder has spoken on it and we have tried to have action taken on it for years please lets move forward and change this corner dynamic for the better by having this store shuttered for good. This store has done fake changes which have been mere subterfuge.

You can contact 311/911 and report the store as a problem business Name: Omar & Salma, 2800 East 76th Street, Chicago 60649, 773-768.3000.

April 13, 2014 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) -- Illinois officials say more than $52 million in federal funds will be invested in local alternative transportation projects.

Gov. Pat Quinn said Saturday the money will pay for 71 projects across the state, including bike paths, walking trails, historic preservation and streetscape beautification.

The money comes from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program - federal money that is doled out competitively and encourages transportation-related projects.

Quinn says the projects will support more than 400 jobs.

The program is designed to encourage alternative transportation options, including bike and pedestrian trails and streetscape upgrades. Local matching funds are required.

The current round of applications to the Illinois Department of Transportation included 232 applications requesting funding totaling nearly $261 million.

I am fine with this as long as they are not planning to try to take away car lanes on major thoroughfares like Stony Island.

  • waymond 2 1/2 Years in South Shore

Sorry, but those plans have already been made.

  • Don

Not quite, the area I am concerned about (67th Street to 79th Street) has not been decided and 5th Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston is seeking community input. She can be reached at 773-324-5555 or lhairston@cityofchicago.org. If only the drivers that drove through there in one day called she would get 35,000 calls.

Chicago decriminalized marijuana possession—but not for everyone

The CHICAGO READER has run the numbers again and the racial grass gap hasn't narrowed a bit. When are we going to stop the cops from destroying our kids lives and sending white kids home with a ticket? It's time to demand the aldermen fix this flawed ordinance so that it decriminalizes our kids too!

Two years after Chicago moved to reform its marijuana laws, a two-tiered system of justice remains firmly in place: while low-level pot possession has essentially been decriminalized for residents of affluent neighborhoods, others are routinely stopped and cuffed in an ongoing crackdown in poor, minority areas.

The number of arrests for marijuana possession citywide has dropped to its lowest level in 12 years. But police continue to make an average of 44 arrests a day for misdemeanor possession, more than for any other offense.

And who's getting busted hasn't changed at all.

Though studies have found similar marijuana usage rates across racial groups, 78 percent of those arrested since August 2012 for carrying small amounts of pot were black, according to police department data. Another 17 percent were Hispanic, and just 4 percent were white—virtually the same breakdown as before the new possession ordinance went into effect.

  • Don

@Todd - Glad to see we can agree on something. Let's legalize marijuana and take that tool and decision away from police. I guess if pointing out inequality based on race makes me a raciest, in your eyes I will have to be one.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

Has nothing to do with 'inequality based on race'... it has to do with probability, the frequency of police intervention.

however i never moved to this area because i wanted to. circumstances beyond my control brought me here. to be honest i'm not fond of the south side at all with the exception of Hyde Park. i've been trying to move to the far Northwest Side but the demand for housing there is so high (due to the relatively low crime rates) that it was impossible to put anything down before someone else snatched it up. very competitive. not to mention my credit ain't A-1.

so unless i win Powerball, i won''t be moving for the next couple years. i will make the best of my time here in South Shore. and who knows? God's will might turn out that He wants me to be here and if it is, who am I to challenge that? :-)

McDonald's on 71st Jeffery

Really? Like we need to feed our children more junk from McDonald's and the other store fronts around here. Is that true? I heard the project starts this April thru Nov. Really? If so, how will that change crime and loitering in the community. What change will this re construction make?

  • Dr. Magic (South Shore Republican) Stuck Here In South Shore Since 2011

You are sweet. Thank you for that suggestion. I know about the health food places in Hyde Park but never knew about this one in South Shore. And I pass by Jeffery and 73rd often.
