So, what's going happening on Waveland and Sheffield outside Wrigley?

Last week, they put up barricades along the sidewalks on the west side of Sheffield and the south side of Waveland. And they took out a lane of parking on both streets, too, redrawing lanes for vehicular traffic. The "no parking" signs posted only go through Sept. 30.

Anybody have any idea what's going on here?

  • The Cubs are a major pain. If they ever move to Rosemont it would b a blessing.

When you moved in the neighborhood you did not realize there was a ballpark at Clark & Addison? Don't think they are moving anywhere in any of our lifetimes.

Recommendation for a Kenmore gas oven repairman- pilot light out.

I smelled gas today when I turned on the oven. Don't see a pilot light at all - I'm sure its buried down in the innards somewhere (!)
Anyone know of a repairman with good references who can come out quick or soon?
Thanks very much.

  • robin in WRP Tired and Cranky

You should be able to light the pilot yourself. Google the make and model number relight pilot

  • Ms Smarty Pants Long-time Lakeview resident and home owner

Depending on how old your stove is, it may not have a pilot light. If it is a recent model, It may be electronic ignition, and your gas smell may be due to another problem. If you actually need a repair person, Kenmore is Sears own house brand. You should call the Sears appliance service.

  • Thanks very much for your responses Ms. Smarty Pants you are correct - electronic ignition.

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

  • Dollar Tree a lot of old people candy there.. since ya like hard candy

  • Liz Earl Chicago area journalist and annoyed cyclist.

Candyality really is the best in Lakeview, but if you're in Chinatown there is a great shop in the plaza on Archer and Cermak, near the Red Line. Mostly Japanese candies, and they have stuff like mango pastilles, guava, papaya and coffee, etc.

Fires

Same thing happened in 900 block of Barry/fletcher 2 or 3 years ago with 2 garages burned , and a chair ? Behind Matilda's . Strong possibility it' was the aggressive local skinny black homeless guy that begs in the Belmont Clark area ; that's per camera view and me seeing him 2 mos later in the dark by my garbage can "lighting a cigarette".
Not random crime of the city. This has been happening here for several years around aug-sept

Hey Guys,

On May 2nd, I was moving a bunch of stuff back home and I decided to stop by a friends place about 11 PM that night (Friday).

The Van, a Mercury Villager 1995 which was the vehicle I was driving, was parked on the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Brompton. It was full of my belongings including a Guitar, Amp and a bunch of sneakers. Because of the fact that I parked on lakeshore drive in front of that condo building (Where my friend lives), I had a sense of security so I fell asleep. Unfortunately, I woke up the next day around 6AM to only walk outside and see that my Van was missing. I looked everywhere, checked every pound and had no luck what so ever. I was hoping that the city moved it so I waited at Recreation drive to see if my van would arrive and it didn't. Like an Idiot, I should've just went home and unloaded but after a long day of moving, I was done. Lesson Learned? Absolutely but if anyone could help with any leads, that would be greatly appreciated. Attached is a photo of the Van.

Be careful, Lakeview is starting to become a hot spot for shady business. I went to a few buildings to see if they saw anything and they all shared stories of auto thefts, break ins around that area.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Oscar, I'm glad you already reported it stolen to authorities and have been checking sites! I was curious since you waited almost 4 months to post on here! Good luck!

  • Philip Independent Business owner ,47th. ward since 1968

It's probably too late now , but if you could have checked the buildings security cameras or others in the neighborhood you may have seen if it was towed by away possibly not by the CPD. Some car thieves use tow vehicle's . Big story on the news a while back about a scrap yard found with many stolen cars on property being brought in by private pirates , I mean tow trucks. Security cameras are everywhere .

Christmas in August (almost Sept.)

I have 20 rolls of Christmas wrapping paper (mostly unopened) that I am never going to use. Does anyone need it? Or does anyone know of a charity or church group who might want it. Thanks!

  • Gloria P. 22-year resident of Roscoe Village

Hi Claire, If you don't take it to the school I can use it. Every Christmas season at my office we choose a couple of needy families to purchase gifts for. If we save money on gift wrap we'll have more money to go toward gifts for these families. Please e-mail me if you want me to pickup the paper. Thank you!

  • That would be great if you could pick it up, it's yours! Please let me know what would be a good time for you. Thanks!!

Yes this is a celebration of wine.Since the festival ends at 8PM we are having a after party for people who were not there or people who were there and would like to hang out more.

We are having it at a upscale place. It's taking place at The Pump Room which is at The public Hotelon the corner of Dearborn and Goethe.

This is an awesome place and its even better on a Saurday Night in Chicago.

The management has agreed to give us a drink special for the time of 8PM till 12:30 AM on this day.

Since its a part celebrating a wine festival, there will be Canyon Road Red and White Wine on special during the time we are there for $8 per glass. We are trying to get 1 more wine and a cocktail as well.

We will have the area of the Library Room and the screening room available to us.

You can become a member of this group by visiting the page and making a short profile of yourself and applying to join our group. The link is below:

This is my shameless plug of a local business but its honest. Try and stop by when you can. Its worth it. They are near Cooper's restaurant. across from the Wit Theater and Theatre 773.

Bikes Stolen from Closed Garage!

Hello all, Mine and my husband's bikes were stolen last night from our closed/locked, private garage which opens to alley. We've filed a police report, listed it on chicago.stolenbike.org, bikeindex.org, and posted to FB, Twitter, Find Stolen Bikes (Chicago), SBR Chicago.
New Men's Cannondale Synapse 6 Tiagra 2013 Black Road Bike (black frame, white lettering, drop handlebars, clipless pedals, front/rear LED lights)
Women's Trek 7.5 FX WSD 2010 Satin Cherry Red Hybrid Bike (red frame, white lettering, flat handlebars, rear fender only, front/rear LED lights, bell on left handle, missing wheel reflectors)
Please keep an eye out for these two bikes and message me with news/advice! Thank you so much!

Bike thefts seem to be picking up (or at least getting more brazen) in the neighborhood - my Fuji SL1 Pro (red/black/white) was stolen on 8/8 from behind a locked gate in our back ally (Surf & Broadway). More than 1 person must have been involved to jump the gate and lift the bike up and over it. The bike is never parked there and was stolen between 9 PM and 9 AM friday night - someone was clearly out looking for items to steal - with flashlights looking into locked and gated areas. I filed a police report, stolen bike registry (local and national), etc. I wish the police had the ability to pay more attention to bike thefts - this bike was worth more than what I sold my past used car for. It's grand theft. It also seems to go with the broken windows theory... if they can get away with bike thefts or car breakins on a regular basis, what's next?

  • Deb

We have had our bikes and our kids bikes stolen a few times. We now lock our bikes inside our garage. It was a bit of a hassle installing a bike rack into the wall of our garage and it's a pain to have to lock our bike each time we use it but we've gone a couple years now without our bikes being stolen.

Beg Bug Issues

Hello Neighbors!

Kind of an embarrassing question, but does anyone know tenant rights in the city of Chicago regarding bed bugs? It seems there has been a recent infestation in our eight person apartment complex and our landlord is refusing to pay to have a professional exterminator in. What are our options?

Thanks so much in advance for the advice!

  • Unfortunately, it takes intensive, high tech and diligent work to eliminate bedbugs.
Be sure to learn as much as you can to do your part.

Looking for a new vet

I'm looking for a new vet that is mature and has 'seen it all' and who has longevity with the practice. And of course, he or she needs to have excellent doggy bedside manner.

I have an 11 year old fairly healthy black lab (for her age). I've been taking her to Higgins Animal Clinic on Belmont for four years. Good-hearted people with a lot of knowledge. I just don't agree with their approach of "this could be a symptom of 6 different things, let's test for all of them" versus, there is a 90% change this symptom is X, so let's start there. If I had unlimited funds, I'd be okay with their approach, but it's hard to get out of their office under $500.

I live in East Lakeview but have a car and am willing to drive a little to find someone experienced and more practical.

  • Here's another vote for Pets First on Broadway and Roscoe. Dr. C and Dr. Mitchell know their stuff and don't push unnecessary tests. I have an old dog and a new puppy, so I am there a lot. I never feel like I'm being overcharged. And both have great bedside manner.

I've been going to Blum for several years (take our cats and dog). The vet I used moved out to the suburbs and no longer practices so about a year ago a lady I randomly ran into in their parking lot highly recommended Dr. Julia Georgesen at Blum (going through many issues w/ her dog she said this doctor was wonderful along w/ great bedside manor, etc.). So I've been taking our 2 cats and dog to her ever since and I highly recommend her as well. She has dogs and cats of her own, loves animals, great bedside manor, explains things very well, starts w/ the "process of elimination" when there are issues w/ your pet (testing, etc.) and is very easy to talk to. She performed surgery on our dog last year having to remove a large growth from her side (I was very nervous) and everything went very smooth and our dog did just fine. She always calls you at home to give you updates on test results, lets you know how your dog/cat is doing post-surgery, etc. And only using 1 other vet years ago before switching to Blum, not sure how much they "overcharge" but seems to me many vets are expensive. Hope this helps.

Bunny on the loose

I saw what is believed to be a domestic rabbit in the Ravenswood alley between Grace and Waveland last night around 8:00 P.M.. He was slightly closer to Waveland cruising around the trash and recycle bins. He was a caramel/butterscotch color. Please be on the lookout and help get to safety at Red Door Animal Shelter.

I see them more often than squirrels these days

On Saturday, August 23rd, about 70 people; neighbors, parents, grandparents, teachers, students, community members (including a dozen from Graceland West, the immediate neighborhood) and leaders from several other neighborhood organizations, the LVHS LSC, Alderman Pawar and others joined Principal Scott Grens for the Lake View High School Beautification Day. Rep. Ann Williams and Friends of Ameya Pawar (PAC) donated the paint. Lake View Partners, the newly launched non-profit to support Lake View and Grow 47, Alderman Pawar's initiative for schools sponsored the event.

Volunteers were organized into small teams and then painted the interior front entrance, library and several other rooms, moved in new equipment and furniture, cleaned all the lockers, removed any remaining tape left over from the prior school year, washed windows, moved landscaping stones and more. There were about 20 major projects. The school was already gleaming when volunteers started and the finishing touches just made everything even more welcoming for students, faculty and administrators.

Everyone, students, faculty, staff, neighbors, elected officials worked together for four hours then met up for lunch. Great effort. Great results. Great community teamwork.

A BIG THANKS to everyone who helped.

Thanks also to those who participated in the LVHS Architectural Tour on August 3rd".

Affordable Yoga Classes in Buena Park/Uptown

I'm new in Buena Park--just moved here about 3 months ago. I've been practicing yoga on and off for the last few years, and I'm looking for recommendations of yoga classes in the area. I've seen CorePower yoga (they're just down the street from me) but the prices are pretty outrageous.

Are there any other more affordable yoga classes in the area? (I would prefer classes I can take without having to purchase a gym membership).

Please let me know. Thanks, everyone!
