Why do bicyclists ride on the sidewalk when they don't have to?

I totally get why cyclists go on the sidewalks sometimes. I did not understand why a young guy had to speed run down Armitage on the sidewalk last night, almost plowing down my 10 pound dog. I also didn't get why the woman was riding on the sidewalk on Humboldt last night when there is the side street to the main street she could have been riding on. I also saw a guy riding on the sidewalk on Palmer, another quiet street.

Since there are so many drivers are so evil threads, I thought I would start a thread on bikers because I saw three last night on the sidewalk for no reason.

  • So what is the point of this observation exactly, KJ?

So what is the point of this observation exactly, KJ?
We're just following the precedent that everyone else has set with their use of the mobile phone in public space. So I mean. Bicyclists are no guiltier of playing the thin the herd game by paying more attention to a screen than the world they are actually in than every single other person out there in urban space.
I've had to bang my fist on cars and catcall whistle them because the driver is completely absorbed in what is on that tiny little screen, and I've had to also shout at pedestrians because they obviously are too absorbed in that tiny little screen. So, until you other users of public space are willing and want to change your behavior with it, it's our selfish right to be absorbed in the thing too.
But, let's be honest about the consequences and the difference of the stupidity involved in unleashing those consequences in public space.
As a driver of a motorized vehicle, you are operating something that weighs many x over what you yourself weigh. Common sense tells me I'll get hurt much worse by a cow being dropped on me at 15 feet than I would if a house cat were to get dropped on me from equal height. I'd be scraped up by a cat, but I won't be crushed. So, we definitely should be taking a slightly different view of texting and operating a motor vehicle than we should of a human powered bicycle which weighs several times less than the operator of it.
Neither are smart, but the consequences of the stupid are going to be very different where the rubber meets the road when you put it in terms of the force mass motion of the carrier involved in that stupid. Sure, It'll hurt to get hit by a bike, but it won't potentially kill you or send your body flying 20 feet in the air like a car hitting you would.

  • KJ

So, it's ok for bicyclists to text while biking because you all started it and everyone else does this so why shouldn't we? Wow. Maybe admit there are crappy bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers instead of making one category a saint.

What do bicyclists do that cars and pedestrians don't? Let's see, blow red lights, ignore all stop signs, go way out into the car lane to pass another biker. Should I do all that because bikers do it?

Solar Panel Installation

The Citizens Utility Board is working with Microgrid Solar to provide a discount for those wanting to install solar panels on their roof. I spoke to a representative who of course told me I should sign up immediately to benefit from the program. I was wondering if anyone else had signed up for this, or dealt with Microgrid Solar, or has had solar panels installed on their own.

I'm trying to decide if its worth it. Thanks!

Gunshots at Milwaukee & Central Park this morning?

Did anyone else here gun shots at around 2:45 am? Woke my wife and I up and heard about 3 shots really close and then several more that sounded as if they were traveling. Anyone have any info?

LS Trick or Treating- Date and Times?

I'm not sure what tradition is as it's my first year in Logan Square but I wanted to be sure to be ready for any Trick or Treaters if there were to be some.

Anyone have info to share on any Neighborhood traditions?

  • I find they start about 3 or 4 and go until about 8. But it's supposed to be really cold on Halloween, so you may not get so many in the evening.

  • I feel so out of touch! 3 or 4 in the afternoon is so early. When I was little it was a night time activity (6:00 to 8:00) for all ages. Thanks for posting, I'd never have known otherwise.

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone knew of any used bikes stores or any other places they would recommend trying to sell a used bike. I went by early this morning and managed to easily lure some of them down to the sidewalk (I got one lovely, young, short-haired tuxedo female I named Monopoly and a tiny, male Snowshoe Siamese kitten I named Kimchee, both went to Tree House today for tests, exams and spay/neuter). I simply do not have foster homes or adoption floor spots for all these cats. I have a foster (but no adopters) for all the little kittens, but if anyone can help foster some of these young, healthy adults/older kittens until I can get them adopted or into other foster, please do let me know (I would have them vetted before they came into your house). They've got bad food and no shelter, and one seemed pretty underweight to me....they ate the food I brought like crazed zombies - they're obviously not being fed properly. Hello All,

I am a local artist, and I have an upcoming installation that involves shoes. I am hoping to collect around 100 pair for this project, but shoes can be very pricey!

I'm reaching out to see if there are any neighbors that happen to have shoes that you may not want anymore. Maybe you are purging - tossing or donating, or maybe you just want to help an artist out.

If so:
Please message me! I'm looking for more classic styles - no sneakers or modern sandals. So this could be heels, pumps, oxfords, boots (depending on what kind), flats, etc. I only have a month before the installation, so I'll probably take anything!

I live in the area, and would be happy to meet in a neutral place or make a pick up!

Thanks!!!

  • N Lady, Salvation Army may receive donations they can't sell. Stores nearby are on Clyborn SE of Ashland/Fullerton & on Grand 1block NW of Pulaski. www.SAthrift.com - Perhaps you can recycle what they can't resell.
If you can afford to pay 75 cents a pair, then visit them on Saturdays. New donations are tagged with a color, and after 8 weeks, all left of that color goes on sale on a Saturday for just 69 cents+tax.

  • If you would set out a box or plastic bin on your street corner for a couple of hours, people could drop shoes off. Just say when and where. I need a home for some 80's pink pumps I've been hanging on to.

Ring lost in Palmer Square

My wife was with our daughter in Palmer Square yesterday afternoon and in the process of packing up lost her engagement ring. We've had a guy come out with a metal detector to search the area to no avail. If you by chance come across a ring in the area, please let me know. We're more than happy to offer a reward.

  • Is there a certain area? Or the whole park?

  • I have a detector. Let me know where and I can check a second time. Make sure she double checks her purse. I find things in there the third time I look. : )

  • Thanks everyone. She was sitting under a dead tree on the N/NW side of the park. We had someone run that area with a metal detector yesterday. The tricky part is she also ran a couple of laps around the track and then headed back to our home, north on Kedzie. So this thing really could be anywhere.

I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Squarites?) ride to work downtown, so I'd like to offer up a reminder that a) not only can you get yourselves killed by pushing the limits of traffic laws, but b) an entire busload of people may get thrown several feet forward due to reckless bicyclist actions, causing injury to others. Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

  • Yeah, those selfish lazy cyclists should get off their environmentally friendly, healthy bikes and drive a polluting car that requires no effort to drive.

  • You have not addressed the issue but you've had your tantrum. Sleep well.

Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

  • PR

Fair enough point on the statistics. They are just an average for all commuters, not those in high-rise apartments near public transit.

That being said, one of your arguments for these renters not having cars seems to be that parking will be expensive, difficult, or unavailable. That is one of my arguments as to why they shouldn't build it so big in the first place.

I hope all of those people don't have cars. Unfortunately hope isn't going to alleviate the traffic jams on Milwaukee if they do.

  • Sounds like they had the same fears back in 1928. Wish I could find the text for this article about the Northwest Tower building (Coyote building at Milwaukee and North), and others. "Trio of imposing buildings for neighborhood centers". Chicago Tribune. May 20, 1928.

Thanksgiving Day Space

Looking for a space to host a Thanksgiving Day party.

Do you have any ideas?

  • I work by day at what is, at night, a homey event space in the northern end of Humboldt Park. I think a thanksgiving celebration would be perfect. Just email Annie on this page: http://thelivingroom.io

Note that there is no oven on site; you'd need to bring your food from elsewhere.

  • Friends just hosted a wedding shower at an airbnb rented apartment. It was perfect because it had a full kitchen and plenty of space. She only spent $100 a night. Might be a cool idea to look into for Thanksgiving if your own place isn't big enough.

  • Great ideas - Thank you so much!!!

Montreal receives over 80 inches of snow a year to Chicago's 38, my friends that live there were in shock that we in Chicago would put out furniture to save a spot for parking after digging out. They would ask--is it not a public street? Well--yes? Well we Chicagoans know it's complicated. I asked them how the city of Montreal handled it and it was so simple. What the city does when it starts to snow, they execute plowing schedules set up very similar to our street cleaning and snow removal on main arteries here in Chicago. Residents are required to move their cars off one side of the street to allow plows to remove snow up to the curbs in the am and by the the morning the other side would be removed.

I think it's brilliant--any thoughts?

I'm paying for private parking this year to avoid the constant aggravation and potential nasty encounters. This is going to be a tough habit for some selfish Chicagoans to break.

Yes, I am also not looking forward to this winter, especially since we already have parking problems here in Chicago. My blood pressure is already rising just thinking about it. That would be a great idea with the moving to one side for the plows to come in. We definitely would have to wait awhile. All streets should be one way and have the cars parked at a one way angle giving more room to park This would never work either since the city works backwards instead of forwards. Yikes, soo many cars.

Also add the center stop signs at crosswalks to make it easier to cross. I have always found that it hard to cross the street at some points where there are crosswalks and most drivers just ignore the signage. Also in my observations it just seems to be a drag strip from California to Western. I have read studies that if the lanes are tighter, drivers in response will slow down. I envision that part of Fullerton to be like Division between Ashland and Leavitt. With it's oversize sidewalks it could be the new "it" area for outdoor cafes and such. Thoughts?

Getting back to the question of making it safer to cross Fullerton- Sergio, thanks for the reminder that there is both an elementary school and a park, which means many children will be crossing this road. Jim, thanks for the link to the site showing that people are already getting hurt here.

I would absolutely be supportive of the city re-engineering this strip to be more safe for those crossing (on foot, bike, or in a car), whether that solution includes bike lanes or not.

In its current configuration, this strip does seem to visually cue drivers to move along and not expect much cross traffic. As others have noted, there are many options (and ones more effective than signs) for modifying the physical components of this strip that would elicit more cautious east-west traffic and safer north-south traffic.

  • Just want to say that there are folks at Goethe working with I believe Active Trans (but I could be wrong) about making the areas around Haas and Goethe safer for pedestrians/cyclists.

Hi All,

For those who have not voted yet, I just wanted to share a resource I found helpful in making my decisions for all the Judicial selections on the ballot. In addition to the Gubernatorial, and Congressional candidates, most of the ballot is comprised of candidates for judges in various courts -- none of whom I knew anything about.

Various Bar Associations gave their recommendations on all of the candidates, compiled in the pdf link below:

Two CTA busses one going North and the other South were stuck in traffic and the drivers stopped to chat, their mirrors were tangled, they were too close too each other, it was a comedy of errors, and poor traffic direction from the contractor. Chicago Police, nowhere despite being just blocks from the 14th District...they sure could have used better traffic control.

So now the road is ground up and there is no work being done, couldn't this have waited till Monday and then do whatever needs to be done?

I commute to the law school from Logan Square and it takes me 35-40 min in the morning to get there around 7:50. It takes me about 10 minutes to get on the expressway (especially if I leave after 7:20), so you can shave some time off by living closer to 90/94. I always take LSD, I end up regretting it otherwise 90% of the time, and the view is absolutely beautiful. It's a great way to start the day. I leave around 3:30/4 to beat rush hour and it takes around the same time.

I would say that if you don't have a parking spot, you should get there at the latest by 7:45. Spots fill up very fast.

I have some friends who live in the south loop and take the bus, which takes them about half an hour, so it's not that much of a difference. Obviously if you're driving, it's under 15 min.

I went to UChicago for undergrad too, and the only way I told myself I'd go back is if I didn't live in Hyde Park, it really sucks. The commute has not really been an issue.

  • I used to commute to the University of Chicago Medical Center from North Ave and Ashland. I started work at 8 a.m. and my commute there via 90/94 was about 30 minutes including the time needed to find on-street parking in Hyde Park. Driving home I would take Lake Shore Drive to 55 to 90/94. I would leave work at approximately 4 p.m. and be home within 45 minutes most days.

Crawfish tails

I am looking for a place to buy a few pounds of crawfish tails (with fat if possible). Fresh or frozen is fine, but I want tails, not the whole bug.

Any ideas? Whole Foods carries them but is way too expensive.

Thanks.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

You might also have luck at an Asian market, I've seen them at numerous Asian/Korean markets around town. They'll be frozen n imported from China. My guess is Dirks will be similar in price to Whole Paycheck.

You should be fine w just the tails, the fat that makes them taste different from other shrimplike creatures is in the tail.

Also if you're gonna turn them into Etoufee you should message me w an address, b/c I'll pay top dollar for a bowl of that stuff.

  • I was able to pick up whole head on frozen crawfish from strack and van til earlier this year. I dont know what your plan is with them, but I believe they may have been pre cooked. They worked out just fine for an etouffee, not sure if they'd do as well for a boil being pre cooked.

Did you lose a young cat, black with white markings?

There is a little lost kitty in the courtyard of my building. A neighbor is attempting to get him/her inside for the night. Is anyone missing a young black cat with some white marks? It is lost in the area east of Kimball and south of Milwaukee. I didn't want to take a picture because it might have scared her away. Looked clean and timid, like someone's pet. If you've lost your little one and the description fits, please post a pic and I'll let you know if it looks like the same cat.

I tried to get some pics of the cat a couple of weeks ago but it was at night and all I could get were glowing eyes. My husband has been trying to coax him close enough to catch since Monday. There is a neighbor at the corner of Spaulding and Schubert who says she leaves food out for him. I know she's been checking in on CL for the owners for several weeks. It's a tuxedo cat and he's been roaming for awhile now. I think he's a neighborhood stray.

FYI - I think I saw the missing cat Oreo (or yet another b&w cat). I heard some sweet, sweet cat love Sunday morning outside my window around 6:30am and went outside to shoe them away.Saw the little black w/ white markings - the stray I always see - hissing at a bigger black tuxedo cat w/ white markings. They both ran off and I was in my pjs so didn't pursue. I'm on kimball s of schubert.
