Shovel your walk

I like many people walk to the train or bus and don't appreciate slipping on ice that is caused by packed snow from not shoveling. If you can manage to shovel your own stairs and walk inside the fence you can shovel outside. And if you are unable to and you live in one of those nice new homes, hire someone to do it for you. Please and thank you.

  • I used my crappy snow blower to clear my entire side of the block and attempted to plow the alley of my neighbors' and I garage. It all seems hopeless though.

  • @Tom - the main offender I can think of on Schubert is a large apartment building that doesn't shovel at all during the whole winter.

Snow- Don't forget to shovel

Looks like a long day of snow and then blowing snow- don't forget to shovel your walk, check on your neighbors who might need help, and shovel your walk, and at least shovel a path on the street side of the walk for your neighbors who don't.

  • okay, i'm done. tried to be a good neighbor, but i have shoveled 5 times today (9, 11, 12, 1, 3:30). and with the blowing and snowing, there is little difference between my front (and the two neighbors i did) and those who shoveled 1x (two neighbors) and those who...

okay, i'm done. tried to be a good neighbor, but i have shoveled 5 times today (9, 11, 12, 1, 3:30). and with the blowing and snowing, there is little difference between my front (and the two neighbors i did) and those who shoveled 1x (two neighbors) and those who never shoveled (the non-profit business and one neighbor) ...three bags of salt, three sets of soaking wet clothes and coats, and had to mop due to snow/salt even though i have a mud room. yet come tomorrow i will be one of the "bad" neighbors chided on eb. would like to hear from someone who doesn't pay a service and doesn't have a snow blower, how/if they were able to keep up with the snow which when i was out at 3, blew 2 inches onto what i had shoveled literally 45 seconds before. i am on california, so it was drifting west to east, right onto what i had shoveled. and question 2 -- where does one go with the snow you are shoveling? ordinance specifies you have to shovel the full 5 feet, (from fence to curb) which means i had the option of trying to throw the snow over a fence (and into the wind) or onto the cars parked on the street that are probably going to get towed. i piled it as much as i could around the lightpole and tree (and those mounds are the only proof that i did shovel. can't tell by the sidewalk itself. ) A very frustrating "day off"...

  • my husband & I have been shoveling/snow blowing all - tell the snow to stop, enough already

Gunshots at Diversey and Troy

Early this morning, around 5:00 AM, I awoke to the fire of gunshots (2 or 3) outside my window. I peeked out and saw three young men (one significantly taller than the other two) wearing dark stocking caps and sweatpants and sweatshirts (no coats) running east on the north side of Diversey Avenue and turning north onto Troy street (It was dark so I couldn't make out any facial features). The tall one and one of the shorter ones scrambled down Troy, while the third man came back to the corner, picked up items from the ground, peeked back around the corner and looked both ways down the street, and then ran back down Troy to join his companions. Unfortunately my window doesn't look far enough down the street to be able to tell where they had come from, or where the gunfire might have originated/been directed to. I did notify the police. Just wanted to give everybody a head's up!

I'm on the block just north of Diversey on Troy. Thanks for posting this Jamie. I have a feeling I've seen these three individuals around the neighborhood as of late. I had a run-in with them at the McDonalds on Milwaukee, and they've been hanging around the JJ Peppers at Kedzie. Three african-american males, in the 14-17 age range. Wearing stocking caps. One is definitely taller than the other two. My roommate has also seen them walking around smoking joints in the alley just north of Diversey as well. Not really sure what to make of it, but I just wanted to put that out there. I (obviously) have no hard evidence to link the two together, but my gut's telling me there's something about those three.

Moreno's News Letter

I am receiving my 1st Ward Alderman (Moreno)'s newsletter for the first time.
The 1st one I received had THREE HUGE PICTURES of the Alderman (the 2nd only 2 and now with the third-back to THREE).
Take a look at Scott Waguespack-32nd Ward's newsletter and you will see what an informative newsletter actually looks like!!! and..what?..no pictures of him anywhere!
And Alderman, if you are reading this...when you responded to my post about your van being parked in a bus spot and 1/2 block of FoodSmart entrance..your response 'literally' threw your employee 'under the bus'. Disrespecting someone who works for you with that response? Shameful...and you represent the people in your ward????Really??

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

Rudy, since you work for Moreno, you're in a good position to tell Mr. Muntaner not to threaten opponents with "repercussions."

  • Fortunately, (I think), I got mapped out of Bribby Joe's ward. He is a self serving, pocket lining sleaze, I hope he looses.

I spotted this cute little guy at Albany and Diversey (on the south side of Diversey) today munching on some grass. He's clearly a pet and needs to be rescued! I'll leave work early today to try to catch him, but if you see him - grab him. And let anyone know who's missing a rabbit that we last saw him at 9:00AM here.

Well last night and the night before there was a white rabbit with red eyes in our back yard. Sorry I didn't get a picture. We fed him/her celery, kale and carrots. Carrots definitely were favored. It had a gash on it's side. We tried to capture it but we don't know rabbits and didn't want to force anything. It wouldn't come to us and would run away. We saw a white rabbit from our 3rd floor a couple yards over awhile ago and just figured it was someone in that house's pet. But know one was around. What's going on folks?

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

lots of people think they can let their pet rabbits loose and they'll survive. They won't. Neither do wild rabbits make good pets.

Red Door Animal Shelter accepts unwanted rabbits. Animal Control accepts stray and unwanted rabbits, as well as injured or orphaned wild rabbits. Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation accepts wild rabbits, but they're far out in the burbs so may be hard to get in touch with.

Recommendations for small chain link fence

The walkway on the north side of my house isn't fenced. I never cared until I got a dog, but now with spring only 5 months off (sarcasm) I would like to be able to let my dog out in the back yard without worrying about him running through the area and escaping. Can anyone recommend someone honest and efficient to install that small portion of chain-link fence to block off the 3 ft or so?

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Angie's List is "pay to play" for contractors. I would check yelp, if you don't get any suggestions here

  • Maz, I have a pretty darn good handyman I'd highly recommend. VERY conscience, hard working & takes pride in his work. He's done work for my sister & myself. Let me know if you'd like his info, or I can have him contact you. I have a 3ft chain link & had him put up white 4x6 plastic lattice to keep my pitty in the yard, gives a little privacy,

Are you in the 31st Ward? If so, there are things going on. There was a meeting with Bob Fioretti at the Belmont-Cragin Library, which I attended. I missed the meeting with Chuy Garcia, but would have liked to attend. There was a debate between the candidates for Alderman for the 31st Ward at the Library. It was packed. There were meet & greets with Milly Santiago and Sean Starr (on separate evenings) at Brew Brew. If you're on Facebook, we have a Belmont Gardens/North Hermosa page. If you email me I'll have the administrator get you on it. There are quite a few of us here who take an interest in the neighborhood. (Of course, the fact that all the "cool" places are in Logan Square, Avondale and Portage Park and none in BG doesn't exactly help either.)

At one of the meet & greets it was mentioned that a lot of people in this neighborhood don't have I-net. Shocking, right?! But if it's true, it would explain the lack of non-crime posts on EB.

2600 N. Richmond - home burglarized while people home

My friend's house on the 2600 block of N. Richmond was broken into this week during the evening hours. The kids were upstairs asleep, while the babysitter watched TV on the first floor. They climbed up a back balcony and broke into through the 2nd floor into the master bedroom. The babysitter heard something, went upstairs and they ran out the way they came in. The same night their neighbors garage was broken into. Anyone else in this area hear of a crimes happening that aren't being reported? There has also been some strong arm robberies in the area (linked below). WTH!?!?!

I have heard aldermanic candidates bashed in this forum for accepting PAC monies. Here's the truth, candidates scrape together money to run their campaign, especially when they are not an incumbent. Many times, PACs will go to the website, click the link and donate. Boom-a Pac has supported a candidate. Is this wag the dog behavior? Does this mean that that candidate is tethered to the PAC and will do their bidding if elected? Of course not! Anyone can donate to a fund. Let's look at the alternative-a new candidate has received a PAC contribution. This PAC is controversial. Should they spend time, energy and resources processing refunds of much needing funding to run the campaign?,... or just hope that common sense will prevail when people are perusing through the campaign contributors. UMMMM-common sense maybe? And seriously if this is the only negative thing you hear about a candidate it's probably because there is nothing else bad to say about them.

When a liquor establishment contributes to a fund does it mean the candidates an alcoholic? This is tantamount to assuming that a candidate who takes money from Walgreens is seeking prescription drugs illegally. Crazy right?!

I encourage you skeptics to go to the state board of elections candidate contributions. Look at who is accepting money from whom, and then imagine you are a conspiracy theorist and want to write bad things about the candidate based on contributors. Voila! You have lots of ammo. You could fabricate stories like crazy because, chances are, there are contributors that are not perfect,... or that have enemies, ...or that do not conform to certain ideals Don't let these forums and this bashing dictate your vote. Educate yourself and make your own decisions!! ...and if you read this-thanks for the few minutes of your time have a great day!

  • You can take the high road or the low road where PAC donations are concerned ... problem is many incumbents have lost their way just following the Mayor's road, some of them for decades.

  • Glad to hear Campaign Financing Reform is on the radar screen. Matt, you are 100% right, as long Republicans and Democrats are running the show real change will never come. We need to vote in non establishment parties that can run on the platform of change. The old guard can't/ won't.

Anyone catch the 1st Ward Debate last week?

I'm new to the First Ward...and found out about the debate too late...checking the candidates' web pages, i don't feel like I know much about who they are and why they are running.... (Moreno, the incumbent who has had a couple people knock on my door; Rhonda Locke, who once worked for Moreno now running against him; Anne Shaw, who has a couple police endorsements; and Andrew Hamilton, a red-headed lawyer with a facebook page.) Did anyone attend/watch the debate? Or have an opinion as to which is the best candidate (or if any have a chance against an incumbent?)

I called Mell's office today and was told by Gina they have no record of a request from anyone. She said they'll need to contact the owner of the apt. building facing the sidewalk to pay 50% of the cost of repair, per some 50/50 city program. I hadn't heard of that program until today. It's strange to require a property owner to pay above and beyond property taxes, etc. to repair city property. I know the owner, and there's no way he'll be able to afford to pay that, nor should he have to. Notwithstanding the principle of maintaining city property, a PI/negligence lawsuit may cost the city @ $25k to settle vs. repairing the sidewalk at < $5k. That makes no sense. What are my neighbors' thoughts?

  • it's been this way for a long time 50/50 to repair sidewalks that actually belong to the city.

I wouldn't say that having to share the cost of fixing city property is "extremely popular". I would say that it's a penalty to make a property owner who can't afford it to pay half to pay half what the cities full responsibility should be, and then make the owner half liable for it as well. I think what would be popular is if the city would rightly pay for the entire thing, being that it is city property and that land owners already pay taxes for things like that already. Chicago, with it's under the table deals, rip off parking meeter agreement, school closings, etc, should try to take a little less advantage of it's tax paying citizens. Now, THAT would be popular!

New bar/restaurant from Owen & Engine owners. Maybe.

Was walking on Milwaukee this morning and saw workers demoing the storefront just south of The Owl at 2515 N. Milwaukee. There was a large sign on the door that said the permit belonged to Bixi Brewery.

That was the beginning of my internet sleuthing (slow work day). I couldn't find any permits for that location online, but found info on Bixi Brewing, LLC - http://www.zacksprivate.com/offering/96806 The owners seem to be Bo & Arden Fowler, who after some more research turned out to be the owners of Owen & Engine. So, I am concluding that Owen & Engine v2 is coming to the main Logan Square thoroughfare.

Anyone else have any details?

All I know about the Milshire is that it got purchased by Mark Fishman (developer) and will likely be rehabbed. He bought it right before new restrictions came into place trying to keep people from changing single-room occupancy hotels like the Milshire into something fancier/more expensive. But haven't heard any updates lately. Looks like a permit for rehab was denied in October/November. I would imagine he's working on moving that rehab forward.

Alderman Defends Choice of Ex-Offender to Lead Political Group

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/02/us/alderman-defends-choice-of-ex-offender-to-lead-political-group.html

When Alderman Joe Moreno feuded recently with the Democratic committeeman in his First Ward constituency, he decided to form what he called an “independent Democratic political organization.”
To lead the reform-themed group, called 1st Ward First, Mr. Moreno tapped someone from a category of Chicagoans who he says need support: ex-offenders.

That someone, Juan Elias, pleaded guilty to the state charge of mutilation of election materials in 1997, after a failed run for Democratic committeeman of the 26th Ward. In 1986, he was convicted on a drug charge after the police caught him with more than three pounds of marijuana.

Apparently it happened at some other nearby buildings as well and the landlord sent out a notice to everyone.

I'd recommend posting something on your apartment door for your neighbors to see. Don't buzz anyone in unless you know exactly who they are. Seems obvious, but I guess some people need a reminder.

Internet Service Providers Logan Square

What service provider do you recommend in Logan Square? I know some are not available at my specific address like RCN. All I want is a basic internet connection. Preferrably less than 50 dollars a month. Thanks!

  • HawksSuperFan Moved in from the Burbs - happy to be in UV!

I have Comcast.. signed the deal with the devil I fear, but so far, it has been good here in UKV - but I'm a gamer. I think if you are looking for cheap, AT&T will be lower priced, but unless you can get real cable./ fiber, I think that DSL is too slow.

I've had them all, in different neighborhoods. For what it's worth, RCN was by far the best, most reliable, most responsive and most affordable of all options. They just don't service as wide an area as Comcast. I also had UVerse at a previous address and have a number of good friends who work for the company. Notoriously hegemonic past aside, I found the service refreshing and reliable and relatively trouble free for several years. Only downside now is they don't offer competitively high speed internet in many areas - mine included. They are rolling out faster speeds in some markets, but building out the infrastructure is taking time.

So, as others here have neatly broken it down, the only real choice for high speed internet for those of us in technologically underserved areas is Comcast. Even if it begs the question, what's better - reliably mediocre speeds or painfully unreliable high speeds? Comcast is also cheaper for the speed they deliver - when they actually deliver it. I am now working with credits for poor service that exceed a month's bill. But honestly, I would pay someone like RCN more to come in and actually do what Comcast continues to prove it can't.

Hey neighbor! If it makes you feel better AT&T is no different.

  • Seth Logan Square resident for 15+ years

You can always text the word "out" to Comcast at phone number 266-278 to see if there is an outage in your area.

Hope this helps in the future.

Keys found!

Keys found outside an apartment building near the intersection of Wrightwood and Spaulding. There are roughly a dozen keys connected by a D ring keychain. If you think these are your keys, please comment back!

  • I believe these may be my keys!

  • David Lightman Part time head turner, full time jaw dropper

do they have a Xsport tag, Walgreens tag, jewel, pet smart, and saber tooth looking bottle opener? if so they are probably mine.

  • Sorry David, those aren't the keys I have! Good luck find yours though.
