Ticket for expired registration - can I contest?

Thanks to the diligent parking enforcement, I received a ticket for Expired Plates or Temporary Registration (Code 0976160F). While I am guilty of not affixing the sticker, I had purchased and received the sticker a few days before the expiration month. My question is that if showing evidence of renewed registration although not on display is grounds for waiver of the $60.00 ticket. Trying to get some input before I contest via mail. Any advice or past experiences will be appreciated!

  • That article is for moving violations, IE real tickets. The city is using parking tickets or ordinance violations and city home rule so they can bypass that.. :) Consider yourself lucky if you were able to contest and win...

  • Hi None, I hate to argue, but maybe you didn't read far enough?

"Procrastinating Drivers Get Pass on Expired License Plate Stickers

Another new law allows motorists who put off renewing their license plates to drive in a vehicle with an expired sticker, as long as they have proof (like a receipt) that they renewed their registration before it expired.

For example, if a vehicle owner renews online right before the expiration date, it may take some time for their registration sticker to arrive in the mail. The receipt of the transaction will allow them to drive on the expired sticker.

This new law will also give Chicago drivers issued a parking ticket for this offense the ability to use their paid receipt as grounds to dismiss the violation if they choose to contest the citation at a hearing or by mail."

Brewery/restaurant at Kimball/Diversey/Milwaukee

On our way to the Gap outlet, we noticed some permits up next door for a brewery and restaurant but haven't been able to find anything as to what brewery this is going to be... anyone know or have read anything?

The article says the brewpub won't serve food but the permit on the door says brewery and restaurant. Any news on what the restaurant will be?

Advice wanted on tips for movers

I'm having movers handle the heavy stuff for the first time in my life and I was curious as to what is typical in terms of tipping. How much do you guys usually give?

I have a one-bedroom apartment and while I'm not a pack rat, it has a closet in every room and they were all full, so...lots of boxes. The mattress is probably the heaviest thing, though I have lots of books, so these guys do have their work cut out for them.

  • Twenty-five bucks per mover plus water. Plus a recommendation on Yelp if they do a good job.

$25 per person is probably fair. If it were 90 degrees out with 80% humidity, I'd recommend upping it another $10 to $15.

Coyotes in Humboldt Park PARK

As I walked my dog (on leash and picking up after her) in the Park today, a city worker was driving around stopping to tell any dog owner he saw that they had spotted coyotes in Humboldt Park Park. It sounded as if they had been aggressive towards dogs but I don't have any facts...but I thought 'terrific' the city would send someone to do so.

  • KMck Smith Park Small Business

eek ! good to know thank you!

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

Hmm, I haven't heard of any coyote incidents lately, but I think it is their mating season now. coyotes live in several of the large parks and cemeteries in Chicago - best thing to do is avoid them, keep your dog leashed, and not leave garbage around for them to scavenge.

Anyone else hear all the commotion today?

Heard sirens for most of early afternoon, sounded serious for how long they were going by.

Does anyone know what the story is?

  • It was a domestic issue. The neighbors don't need yo be worried for their safety related to this unfortunate incident.

  • That's a relief but still horrible to hear. Thanks for the reply.

Lost Keys

Hi neighbors,
I dropped my keys this afternoon while I was out walking my dogs. While I re-walked the path several times, I cannot find them! If you notice a set of keys (should include apartment, bike lock, and a really obnoxious pink key charm from Claire's).

Please let me know if you see them!
Best regards,
Helen

  • Thank you. Can you tell me whereabouts, please?

  • It's by the house on the corner of St Louis and Diversey. I last saw them today hanging on the black fence near the garage.

Roof Deck Builder Recommendations?

We moved into our townhouse last fall, and now that winter is over we want to re-build our roof deck. There's currently a small deck (100 sq. ft) in place, but we want to replace it with one that fills the maximum allowable build-able space (approx. 400 sq. ft.). Does anybody have recommendations for a roof deck builder?

#73 bus schedule

Does anyone know the best way to advocate for an extension of the #73 Armitage bus schedule? Right now it stops before 7:30 on weekends, which no longer matches community need, especially once the trail opens. I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

When you go to the aldermanic offices, ask them to direct you to the CTA community engagement staffer for that particular area.
Lastly, I think it's a little shortsighted to say that the CTA makes these decisions -- cuts and additions to service --without first looking at a significant amount of data. But nothing would ever happen without community involvement...so get involved!

As an update, I emailed a bunch of different people and heard back from a few. The CTA forwarded my request to their Service Planning Department. It sounds like the CTA determines the need for service changes based on bus use during other times of day to ensure return on investment. I also heard from two representatives from Moreno's office -- one forwarded my message to the CTA and the other suggested talking to the Trust for Public Land (the 606 group) and the other aldermen along Armitage. I contacted all of them but haven't heard back.

New bus routes on Elston and Clybourn may be difficult, though helpful. Armitage is already a bus route, so it would be a matter of extending hours, but even that costs money in a time of CTA budget cuts.

If you don't pick up that poop you might get flagged!

This topic has been addressed here ad nauseam, I don't think the offenders are reading Every Block- you know, pick up your dog poop! This afternoon, someone actually flagged a dog poop. I am not sure what to make of it- If you want to see this- take a look, I took a picture. (for some unknown reason, Everyblock pics are not going through)

Want to stop people from leaving dog poop behind? Take a photo of the offender, put it on fliers and post them all over the neighborhood. While it is an action, a flag doesn't connect the offender to the offending act. I love my neighborhood but I am sick and tired of having to tightrope down the sidewalk (and now, the curb!) to avoid dog feces. It was a nicer place to live before Logan Square got hot and started attracting lazy and inconsiderate dog owners.

  • This is great!

Moved into the neighborhood last August, and since then I've noticed that my next door neighbor allows his 3 dogs to defecate in his back yard (which I have no problem with.... it is his yard). The issue is that he never cleans up. About once a month his landscapers come by and rake up some of the feces, but a lot just gets pushed to the fence line.

This ends up breeding TONS of flies in the warmer months. I put out traps when I moved in last summer, but they stink terrible themselves, and only somewhat help.

It's made being in my yard or on my deck absolutely terrible in the summer months. Hundreds and hundreds of flies are buzzing around the yards and the bites are terrible!
I plan on talking to my neighbor as it gets warmer, but wanted to know if there is any ordinance or law regarding waste in a yard.
I thought about pesticides, but with a newborn in my household and his animals on his yard, I'd hate to use it on my property and risk any adverse effects...

I plan on building a bigger, non-chain link fence in a year or two; but its just not in the budget this summer... And it wont really help with the flies anyways.

Thoughts?

  • Fly strips are non chemical. I hang one in my kitchen because I leave my back doors open, weather permitting, for my dogs. Hang a couple on your porch.

  • bananakiki neighbor

Write a nice note asking them to pick it up and attach it somewhere obvious. Not only flies and rats but the smell of it will intoxicate you when it hits about 85 this summer.

Also if you call your alderman, they will send the sanitation/health dept. over there and fine them. You can also take a photo and file a complain using the phone app: ChiWorks. You'll need their exact address.

Routine Traffic Stop Ended In A Police Car Chase.

Police stopped a vehicle in front of the logan square blue line, when they asked the driver to step out (Police already had his on his gun), the driver took off. He sped down Milwaukee ave and dangerously turned into the boulevard where he crashed against a parked car in front of NewWave and ended hitting a pole. They immediately handcuffed him, and gave him the medical attention he needed before they drove away.

I overheard someone say it was a stolen vehicle.

Very scary, Very real.

18X22 ROOM FOR RENT
May 1st

I am looking for a non-smoking, peace loving, cat friendly neat individual to rent a beautiful room in an amazing Arts & Crafts building in the Fullerton and Western area; tree lined street, easy parking, tons of public trans, very safe neighborhood.

The 18X22 room is in the front of the apartment. It is very private, almost like having your own studio apartment. There is a faux fireplace, stained glass windows, ceiling fan, and the front of room is all windows, so lots of light. The apartment is on the second floor so it feels like you are in the trees. The room is large enough for sitting area, office, and bedroom area. Built-in book shelves. Beautiful!

The kitchen is huge and modernized, dish washer, walk in pantry, kitchen is furnished. The bathroom is also huge and very nice, clean, subway tiles, ceiling fan. The coin laundry is in basement. There is some storage available. OK for bike in basement, real safe. 3 units in the building, so the building is quiet. I have 2 cats. No more pets are allowed.

$650.00 per month everything included (rent, utilities, cleaning supplies etc. and housekeeping.) Phone & internet not included. $650.00 security deposit and references required. Apartment available May 1st (preferred) but could be as early as April 15th or as late as June 1st as well.

A couple of people have emailed me about a post I made on EB a while ago about getting a red light camera ticket dismissed based on the fact the "MAKE" of the vehicle is listed as "OTHR" on the ticket, even though from the photo of the violation you can readily tell the "MAKE." The municipal code I cited in that old post seems to be different than where the rule is now, so I wanted to update the information.

Municipal Code 90-100-030 (b) (in part):
"The issuer of the notice shall specify on the notice his identification number, the particular parking or compliance ordinance allegedly violated, THE MAKE (my emphasis) and state registration number of the cited vehicle, and the place, date, time and nature of the alleged violation and shall certify the correctness of the specified information by signing his name as provided in Section 11-208.3 of the Illinois Vehicle Code, as amended."

Illinois Code 625 ILCS5/11208.3 (2) (in part):
"With regard to automated speed enforcement system or automated traffic law violations, VEHICLE MAKE (my emphasis) shall be specified on the automated speed enforcement system or automated traffic law violation notice if the make is available and readily discernible."

If you can discern the MAKE from the photo, you can try this defense. It worked for me, because in law, ALL of the "elements" (requirements) of an ordinance must be true to find the person guilty of the infraction.

When I went to the hearing, I printed out copies of the ordinance and state law, and made sure I had my vehicle registration with me, and that you could tell the MAKE by the photo. It worked and my ticket was dismissed. I have no idea what might happen if you mail this in. Maybe someone is willing to try it and see what happens.

BTW, I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, just a neighbor passing on some info.
Good luck!

I don' know - I contested in person. When I argued the timing part, and the wet and recently snowed part, it didn't move the administrative "judge" but then I told him, wait, I have another defense, and argued the Municipal Code defense (of Make is listed as OTHR and you can clearly see the Make of the car in the photo, plus the Secretary of State has the Make of my car in their records) he left me off.

stephc27 cites the codes. You can goggle these and should get to the places in the code where that is, and print it out.

Sorry, stephc27, that it didn't work for you. I read recently in the paper that a lawyer is doing a class action suit to challenge the red light tickets, and one of the arguments seems to be not having the Make on the ticket in violation of the ordinance.

Here's the report on CLTV with text. http://cltv.com/2015/03/24/new-lawsuit-challenges-chicagos-speed-and-red-light-cameras/

Carol, one thing, you may as well try the defense, because if it flys, then you get out of it, if not, at least you tried. I shared it here hoping more people could defend themselves against these computerized cops.

  • Beeb, thanks so much. It's always worth contesting, even if you lose! And the "Make" idea was a great tip. The codes are very clear. The ticket should be dismissed, but they are just ignoring that. Would really like to to join that lawsuit!

Anyone see a car wreck on Belden last night?

This is a total shot in the dark, but I'm wondering if anyone who lives on the block of Belden between Kimball and Spaulding may have happened to witness a (probably) large car that was (maybe) reddish or burgundy in color smash into the front side of my parked car?

This piece of human garbage did not leave a note, but did leave an enormous dent in my car.

  • Yes - file the report with 311 (or stop at the station) and get the report number. You'll need that to file with your insurance company if you want to get it fixed. Unfortunately, unless you figure out who the culprit is, you'll be stuck with the deductible for your collision coverage (assuming you carry that).

Alterations recommendations in Logan Square

I have some jeans that need to be taken in a bit. I tried the place on Armitage and Kedzie, but the stitches didn't hold up for long. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance! :)

Where to sell used mattresses?

My middle-aged mother is moving to a smaller apartment this weekend and no longer wants, needs, or has space for her queen sized mattress and bed frame. I don't really want to go the craigslist route because waiting for a legit buyer (as opposed to a cashiers check scammer) and then trying to coordinate pick up is more of a hassle than I'm willing to deal with this weekend. I know there are used mattress stores but…? can't seem to find much info on getting rid of them, only buying them. It's a decent quality mattress, about 14 years old, cats and dogs in home. Suggestions?

Lost dog

Last night, we lost our black shih tzu (Saturday March 28) on the 4200 Kedzie block. He was wearing a blue sweater and had been recently groomed. If anyone has any information, please call 773-814-7474, as our family is anxiously awaiting any good news. He is microchipped.

Garage wanted

My husband and I are looking to rent a garage space close to the Avondale area. Is anyone renting theirs?

  • We might have a spot. What area are you looking at? What sort of price were you expecting and when would the car be there?

Fioretti backs Rahm?

What does this mean for the beloved Progressive Caucus? Was Bob for sale? What do the people who backed Bob for round one say about this? Somebody talk me down.

  • Douglas Raul Williams Family history in Logan Square since 1970

Clearly a deal was struck since Fioretti is not running for his old aldermanic seat and his law firm will need business form the city. It is really disappointing and leaves a bad legacy for Fioretti since he was such a Rahm basher all his career.

  • Charles Thomas just tweeted - ".@Fioretti2ndWard admits failed effort to get @SEIULocal1 help paying debt. @RahmEmanuel says he'll help. Hmm"

Logan Square Dog Park

Anyone have any updates on the Logan Square Dog Park? After it was approved last year the blueprint was on the Park District website with construction to begin Fall 2014. Obviously that hasn't happened. Any info would be appreciated.

In 2012 the park 556 site, which includes the dog park, received $340,000 in OSIF funds, arranged by Ald. Colon for site development. The money has already been transferred to the Park District so State funding changes for other projects should not affect this project. The bids just need to come in at the budget, and we'll know soon if that is going to happen.

That said - Kim's note is on point. These projects only survive if people continue to get involved to support them, so please do get involved!

Hi dog lovers. I have an update on the future of the Logan Square Dog Park. We just heard back from the Chicago Park District and they have plans to begin construction on the new park in May! We are trying to get the project manager from the park district to attend our next committee meeting so he can walk everyone through the plans. Like our Facebook page for updates.
