Where to get a good steak?

Anyone know where to get a high quality steak dinner in the area? Or closeby? I have been in the city for over 4 months and have yet to have one.

  • Kelly B Beaucastel's Mom

El Nandu is consistently amazing! While Bavette's is certainly at the top of my list but not in the 'hood and much pricier. If you want cook an incredible steak at home, head to Olympia meats on Randolph. Superb quality at very reasonable prices. Paulina Meat Market has a much larger selection in Lincoln Park but also much pricier.

  • Love Tango Sur. The Filet is amazing!

Someone with sewing knowledge help me with my new serger?

I'll bake cookies for someone who's willing to come over and help me figure out what I did wrong when learning how to use my serger! It worked fine until I tried to change the stitch, now it won't do anything. Help?
Also, I'm obviously new to EveryBlock, so if there's a better place for this request that I haven't found yet, please let me know. Thanks!

  • Kittyhop, have you ever taken a class at JoAnn's? I've wondered if it may be worth the cost. I'd assume they offer some sort of beginner serging class.

  • LimoD, do you know anything about lathes? I have one of those too that doesn't seem to work quite right. And a belt sander that needs a part replaced.

Looking for used plastic water bottles...

I'm in search of used empty plastic water bottles. A lot of them. Anyone know where I can get some? I'm looking to fill the bottom of a very larger container that I am using to plant vegetables. Thanks!

  • What an interesting idea....(concrete pieces would dissolve putting in chemicals, right?)

I pick up at least 30 at the soccer filed on the west side of Humboldt Park after every week-end. They are all in one location.

School maybe? Too bad there isn't a 'race' going on; they are piled up then..

    Good luck!

Lyft is superfab. The drivers are always happy to talk about their experience. Best thing would be taking a ride with one and just asking.

Center For Neighborhood Technology is our current spot, but they are moving. We've asked Dill Pickle and they are overflowing into another space and their new store won't be ready for ages. We've reached out to Goethe School, but haven't heard back for sure from Principal Kargas. I also contacted Darwin, but haven't gotten a response.

I'd love to hear from contacts at local schools and churches.

We are pretty awesome if I do say so myself as a member. Consider joining.

Thanks so much,

About us:

Chicago Food Coop is a food buying club made up of individuals who collectively purchase groceries directly from distributors. We have an advantage over the individual consumer because we can purchase goods at wholesale (discounted) prices and pass the savings on to our members. We strive to bring our members variety and value. Our grocery suppliers are selected to provide the items that members want and as a buying club the price we pay for grocery items is often even lower than listed.

  • Thanks for your interest! That would be super. Check out our website http://www.chicagofoodcoop.org/

If it looks good to you, email membership@chicagofoodcoop.org We are holding off on doing our next orientation until the next delivery or when we get our new space-whichever comes first. I am the person who gives the info about joining so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

However, in the last year, instances in which I am basically incapacitated have occurred much more frequently and are far more severe. My GP recommended docs in her hospital but, having seen many orthos that haven't helped me (the reason I had gone the eastern route), I'm hesitant to go without a word of recommendation.
So...anyone have an ortho they really like, particularly one that specializes in the spine? I'd really appreciate any tips. Anywhere in the Chicago area will be fine.
Thanks in advance!

Just got a ticket in violation of code 0964100G STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC SIGNAL which, after further research, is for parking too close to a stop sign. Apparently the code states you have to be 30 FEET from a stop sign or traffic signal, however, I can't actually find the code. I plan on attempting to contest it. This just seems like some BS way of creating revenue, especially when there are no signs posted or markings on the curb and there are and have been several cars parked just as close to the stop sign or in the same exact spot for years, and I've never seen a car ticketed ONCE. I'm mad. Anyone have any suggestions for anything I can do to be productive? Otherwise, I will just stew in my anger and out $60. This was at the stop sign at Spaulding and Schubert, near the blue line.

  • Victoria Artist and Muscian

    C. M. D., When I contested in person they slapped a court fee on my ticket, so I ended up paying more, so as Happy in Humbolt says, contest it by mail.

  • Can't believe they do that. If that's the contesting system now, the shady goons at SERCO really should have to pay you a fee when you actually win. Otherwise, is there any disincentive at all for them when they wrongfully ticket you? Why would they even think twice about whether it's legit or not?

False Alarm Fines

Anyone know if it's true that residential homes/units don't get fined for a false security alarm? I know that businesses don't get the free pass, but can't find anything that says residential addresses are except from the false alarm fine.

  • I am a pet sitter. Sometimes a cat will set off a system that is supposed to be solid up to 25 to 50 pounds, for example. The first one is free. They issue a notice that they were there and found no evidence of break in blah blah blah blah. If you get a certain number of false alarms within a year they then start to issue fines which increase with ongoing occurrences. Hasn't happened with me for quite awhile so the specifics are not clear in my recollection.

  • Thanks, everyone! Now I just need to figure out how to get this fine waived without going to the court hearing.... :)

Willett Tower has a lock up, but I'm not sure if they are public. My building at 200 W. Adams has a lock up, but you must work there.

Another trick is to buy a very heavy chain, they are way too heavy and squirmy to cut (unlike my wimpy cable). The downside is that they are so heavy. So people buy them and leave them chained at the post in front of work. That's why you see so many "abandoned" locks on posts downtown. Of course, this won't help if you are not working in the same place everyday.

After I got my bike stolen with using a cable, I changed to a U-lock like Kryptonite and never had a problem again. It was just a Schwinn, so if you have a top-end bike, then your mileage may vary.

    Happy Biking!

Logan Theater and TIF Money?

If you know you're going to fund this project with cash only, it should also follow that you know the timeline to opening will lengthen. Don't get people all riled up and excited, only to delay beyond reasonable expectations - it diminishes interest.

Construction "site" at 3060 W Armitage Ave

I live in the building there and the dump and mess that has been left from construction for the bank on the other corner of the street is insane. Anyone on here work for the city? I am positive they do not have permits and have no right to be using the extra land as a place to store their junk. I'm tired of the noise and tired of looking at it! Something has got to be done. That, on top of the graffiti all over the place, is driving me nuts!

Does anyone here want to see our Alderman put up signs on existing poles that say "Respect Our Community, Do Not Litter" ? I saw these signs in Andersonville when I lived there and I believe they actually helped. Right now, I'm not sure the folks here are aware of the benefits of not dropping their trash on the street or in front of their houses.

Also, the Chase grammar school should start a no litter campaign in their early grades. It just takes a guest speaker to come out for 40 minutes once a year. That's how I learned not to litter back in the 70's. Since then, the awareness seems to have dropped off.

I'd love to here if anyone has discussed or thought about solving the litter problem in this area.

  • As an parent of a student at Chase school. I can say that they have a great anti litter program. There are several garbage cans outside the main entrance and surrounding the school that are emptied on a daily basis. The students are reminded not to litter on a daily basis and they have a clean up days.

Actually, legislating is supposed to be their primary function. That is the design of our city government, strong City Council- weak mayor. But for over half a century we've endured the problems that come with a mayor running amok thanks to the practice of having aldermen/women act as middlemen for city services.

This is what bogs them down and why big ticket issues like the parking meter privatization, TIF, pension contributions, etc do not get the attention they deserve. Those debacles are why the City is broke, and can't afford to provide basic services to the level we'd all like, such as providing more trash cans and pickup. It is not the alderman's job to provide trash cans just because someone requests them, if so we'd have trash cans on every corner and be paying out the nose to have them serviced.

All that said, that is a big intersection and seems like a candidate for trash cans. I am guessing the park construction is the culprit, and once that is completed they will return.

Go through 311, that way you also get a tracking number and can follow up and make your case.

You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

  • I'd love a second chance. I'll send you a,message Wednesday or Thursday when I have a better idea of my schedule.
