Mayoral Runoff

Gov. Rauner says he will not be making an endorsement. W. Wilson says on election day he will be meeting with Garcia and expects to endorse him. Gov. Rauner meets with Wilson and asks him to endorse Rahm. Wilson says he is not sure who he will endorse. Hmmmm....what could be afoot?

  • I endorse Willie to seek a speaking coach prior to his next election run.

  • Even if Wilson endorses Rahm, that's no guarantee that his supporters will.

  • LimoD Logan Square 20 years!

Michael Sneed reported Wilson's buddy Rauner called Wilson and TOLD him to endorse Emanuel. I think that's a game changer in Garcia's favor. He needs to pounce on that.

Boil Water Advisory status?

Hello, we received a Boil Water Advisory on Feb. 26 "until further notice" and I called 311 to check the status, she said the water is safe to use now and that the city would not be providing any formal notice, is that trustworthy? Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • SunshineDiva2014 Long time Chicago resident.

Where did you get the notice ? I live in Avondale on Belmont near Western. Would love to have more info.

  • We received official notice that the advisory was lifted, water is safe.

  • Where do you get the advisories from? I live within the boundaries of past ones and would like to get them

However, some forms of government DO help - I received government financial aid to get a two year technical degree that eventually led to a good job, and received about six years of free birth control from Blago's Pink Card program. Those two investments paid off in that I am now a productive, tax-paying, non-child-having middle class adult.

Artsy Pub Crawl?

I'm looking to put together a pub crawl with an art theme, and I'm specifically looking for restaurants/bars that have local art for sale on the walls. We will be starting in Logan Square but will go anywhere in the city from there. I know Dunlays, Rocking Horse, and the Green Eye typically have art for sale, anyone know of some other good stops?

  • The gallery cabaret always has art, and at the mutiny they have some ceiling tiles that bands have painted

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

How bout ask all the local bars/restaurants/businesses in a given area if they'd be willing to feature a local artist or two during this event? Some of them might not have the idea on their own but would be willing to do it.

Does this restriction start before or after the sign? I took this picture from where I was parked ( on the corner.) You can see the sign about a third block up. I have been parking here for 2 years with no problems but if I am wrong I will park somewhere else. I could google it but every blockers tend to know it all..

Car broken into while parked on Palmer Blvd

My car was broken into sometime between today and Wednesday night. No windows were broken so either it was jimmied or the door was unlocked. Everything from all the compartments was turned out onto the floor. Two CD cases of CDs were taken, all my change (about $3.00 in pennies) and car phone charger and ipod adapter. No huge losses. I expect it was someone walking down the street trying door handles. Perhaps the fact that the snow wasn't cleared off my car for a day made it look like I was away? It was parked right in front of my apartment, on Palmer Blvd near Sacramento.

    Karen,

For what it is worth, I was sitting in my front window on Thurs morning, around 11a or so, and I saw a man walking down (in) the street. He wasn't really acting suspicious nor did he seem to look at every car; I just assumed he didn't want to deal with all the dirtbags that don't shovel snow.

The weird thing is he disappeared right in front of your car- I assumed he just walked up my driveway and out of my sight; I went back to what I was doing. About 2 minutes later, he appeared again right next to your car, and then casually sulked off.

He was about 6', bundled up pretty well so no description of face, ethnicity, etc, regretfully. He carried a gigantic walking stick, that almost looked like something out of a cartoon, like a magic staff.

I guess I assumed he was tying his shoe or something, as I didn't hear breaking glass or even the car door close, nor did he run away... so maybe this wasn't your guy... regrets I didn't take a picture, but I guess he wasn't "off" enough to warrant police or other presence.

Sorry, I'll be more paranoid next time. I hope to have front cameras up and running once the weather breaks a bit.

    Your neighbor,
    Jeff

  • Thanks Jeff, I don't think it could be avoided, though now I'll look for a person with a staff!

I think the take away is to not leave things in my car. I remember now I had a plastic bag of trash and recycling on the passenger seat. Even if I know it's not worth anything, I need to make sure my car looks boring to someone who looks in.

Election

What does it say about a mayor who spends millions against a field of candidates who have never run for Mayor and he gets 1000 less votes than his 1st election and almost set a record for lowest turnout ever. Maybe if there was a candidate named Apathetic he/she would have won.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-comparing-emanuels-2011-election-to-2015-20150225-htmlstory.html

  • I believe that a lot of folks might have stayed home thinking a certain outcome was inevitable. That is the reason I would like to think explains the low turn out. I'm hoping people understand how important the Run Off is and get engaged in the process.

There are also between 19-21 wards that will have an aldermanic run off so the face of the City Council has the potential to drastically shift. Personally, I find that prospect exciting.

  • Loulu Me

It says a lot about him and a lot about the public. The amount of money he has, and has spent, is both obnoxious and offensive. I find the money from Hollywood particularly troublesome. I think those who don't live here should stay out of it. We are the ones to live with the results.

  • Marcelino Gerena New 31st Ward Resident

Well, it appears that the B of E found enough votes for 33rd ward alderman to avoid a runoff. 2 to be exact. Keep that in mind you 2 voters who live in the 33rd and did not vote early or often and wanted a different alderman. The addage "each vote counts" holds true in this election.

Wayne Electric Building - Elston and California

Does anyone know what is going on with the old Wayne Electric Building on Elston and California? They just put up fencing all around the property. Has it been bought out? Are they going to tear it down and build a commercial or residential bldg?

  • They were tearing at least part of it down when I went by on Thursday morning.

  • Jacko Z just livin' in the hood

Pedestrian traffic would help, however the size of the sidewalks and discombobulated intersections make it very hard to develop a restaurant/bar. Also the Elston strip just south of this intersection needs a redevelopment.

Residential Glass repair

Does anyone have a good recommendation of a local company recently used to repair interior window pane glass? Thanks!

We have used: All-American Glass Co @ 3309 W Irving Park - 773-262-6777. They replaced a double pane window in which the seal was broken and we had condensation between the glass panes. They offer a 5-yr warranty on the repair.

Tearing Up Streets by St. Wenceslaus

Starting next week the City has announced that it will be tearing up streets in my area, including the Monticello block by St. Wenceslaus, for water/sewer repairs. They've also posted "no parking" signs that extend into April. There doesn't seem to be any provision of what the many people who pack the block with parked cars each night should do. All the blocks around are zoned for permit parking. Has anyone heard any news about easing of permit parking restrictions or such? Yes, I can call the alderman, but I wanted to tap the community grapevine first. Thanks.

This afternoon I was approached by two men in their late 20s that seemed a bit sketchy in a black dodge minivan that said they wanted to fix a dent that was in my car. I was in my car and they were in theirs. I said no thank you and they persisted to hound me saying they would and could do it right now, on the spot if I just gave them 20 dollars. At this point they were harassing me and seemed mad that I wouldnt pay 20$ to have a dent fixed. They were both very persistent and aggressive in nature. I decided to take a photo of them after they pulled away to give details on the plate to 311. At this point they reversed and rammed their car into mine hard and got out of their car. I honked and made a scene and they got back into the car and drove off. I feel like they were probably trying to rob me or steal my car. I went to the police station and they couldn't do anything since there was minimal damage to my car and I wasn't hurt, physically. The license plate was an expired temporary plate registered to a woman from the suburbs. I just want people to be aware of these guys. They seemed hard up,irrational and violent. It seemed like they had this scam down and it wasn't their first attempt. I'm glad people were around and it didn't escalate into anything worse. It was definitely a scary situation.

  • I understand not chasing the thief but the security guard could have at least assisted the lady -- see if she was hurt, take her inside, help her call the real police -- they should be trained to not just stand there and look puzzled.

1411/1412 Beat Meeting on Feb. 26

The beat meeting for 1411/1412, which had been postponed due to snow, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7pm. Beat meetings are held at St. Nicolai Church, 3000 N. Kedzie Ave.

In addition to the usual information about crime statistics, police alerts, significant arrests and neighborhood occurrences, this meeting will also feature a information on bicycle theft prevention.
With Spring approaching (allegedly), people will be using their bikes more often. With more bikes out, the number of bicycle thefts increases in spring/summer. Get some tips from CPD members who are also cyclists on protecting your bike from theft.

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

Due to time constraints, the bike theft tips will be at April's meeting. Still worth attending!

After reading a previous post that she lives in the 1st ward AND worked for that Alderman recently- I finally determined that she screwed up her paperwork and meant to file to run in the 1st ward !

As everyone knows- vital services & representation are sorely lacking in the 1st ward.
I welcome her efforts to replace Joe Moreno and finally clean up the garbage and filth around her community.

Classes are Tuesdays 6-8pm and Saturdays 10am-noon.

And if you know of anyone who would like to learn, or increase their knowledge of English as a second language, let them know!
