TRIBUNE: Fate of STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK signs

TRIBUNE transportation reporter Jon Hilkevitch has article in 11/24/2014 Monday Getting Around column that mentions Logan Square.

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:
1. in street mounted signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK are visual cue that enhances Pedestrian Safety. Milwaukee Ave location has 25,000 vehicles/day AND is heavily used by pedestrians day & evening on City designated PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET in heart of vibrant Logan Square business district.
2. signs are intrinsically subject to wear/damage and getting plowed over by (idiot) drivers
3. CDOT/City annual budget should anticipate replacement cost for these signs, like replacement of Stop, Tow Zone, No Parking etc which come from City budget, not Alderman ward menu funds
4. Red Light and Schools/Parks cameras bring in ~$100,000,000 per yr. It's not Mayor Emanuel slush fund to plug police overtime etc. Public Safety & real leadership means: take some of that $ and pay to replace damaged signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK as needed.

The DUI KING of City Council, Alderman Rey Colon offered this comment in Tribune: "These signs are very popular with constituents who request them often," Colon said. But he said the average life of the signs "is like freshly cut flowers that wither and die."

Alderman: it's time for your political career to do the same.

  • Obvious as it may seem that people should stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, in my area that does not happen. Those signs, small as they are, completely change drivers' habits. It's a shame that drivers are so bad out there, that they're knocked down and smashed to bits so quickly.

  • Marcelino Gerena New 31st Ward Resident

I stop at crosswalks whenever pedestrians are present and have cars go around me, honk at me, etc. Pedestrians also wave me on. As a pedestrian, I find drivers do not comply and have no regard fir public safety. Those street signs are run over and do not last. Maybe it is time for the city or IDOT to have a public campaign and enforcement program. Just my opinion and thoughts.

SOS at Animal Control

Animal control is COMPLETELY FULL.
Because of this they will be killing tons of adoptable animals. Please if you can foster or adopt let me know ASAP. Fostering is free and temporary. Please share this to your Facebook statuses.

Petfinder is a legit service that is sometimes used by rescue organizations to reach more potential adopters.

Animal shelters like CACC (chicago animal care and control), and AWL (animal welfare league) in Englewood, are intake facilities. That means they take everything that is brought into the door, typically higher euthanasia rates, and only release animals to approved rescue - you cannot walk into one and take an animal home with you. They cannot adopt animals to the public - except for AWL's Chicago Ridge location that is used for such purpose. These intake facilities are so full with abandoned, relinquished and stray animals, so rescues rely on foster families to help so they can pull as many animals as possible from these not-so-ideal conditions.

I volunteer as the Outreach Director for a non-profit - Trio Animal Foundation (Project Rescue Chicago is a division of ours too), and we volunteer at Animal Welfare League, and I have been to CACC. It will break your heart to step foot i these places and the animals do need our help. Anyone who is able to foster is doing such am important and selfless act, and all food/vet/etc is paid for by the rescue.

I unfortunately am one of those homeless people who live under that bridge. I mean no harm to anyone especially the people who reside there on Kedzie and on sawyer. I would like to tell anyone who is interested that we do not want to be there anymore that you want us there. We mean no harm and we try to respect the community and all the people who pass through on a daily basis. Don't be scared of us. Try to keep an open mind. Notice that when you do pass through that we try very hard to keep it as clean as we can, we usually don't speak unless spoken to, and we never ask for anything. Some of deal with mental illness others have drug and alcohol problems but there are some of us who are very down on our luck with no family or place to go. If anyone would just reach out and ask they would know that we are harmless and we are just as afraid as you are remember we are there all night. We are alone we are treated as if we are not human and sometimes invisible as if this is what we really want sometimes people think the answer is as simple as getting a job which is a real challenge when you cannot keep your hygiene up, get proper rest and have no way to get back and forth imagine how frightening it is to go out all day and look for a job come back and find that the little bit you own has been discarded by the city. For just a minute put yourself in our shoes and maybe do for us what you would want someone to do for you if you were in our position. It absolutely is not as easy as it sounds.

  • Shelters turn away people DAILY. Homeless get in line for access hours before opening because they know first-come-first-served. There are no reservations for a shelter bed.

I'm probably the only person here including the person who wrote this post who's actually been homeless. I've been the child pushing a shopping cart, slept in my van with my children, and had to rely on the kindness of the church and few family so miss me with your pretentious attitude. If any homeless person walks into any church on a Sunday and tells someone they want to take a shower there is no way they will be turned away. It's sacrileligios. Also anywhere there is a pool there is a shower, once again I have done that too. In between not having an available shower you get yourself some baby wipes and keep up your appearance in between showers. Homeless people don't just come from nowhere, they were birthed and entered this world just like everyone else, they know someone. And living in a city that closes 50 schools, 6 mental care facilities and is so corrupt it is fighting every step of the way to pay people a somewhat live able wage, you have to look out for your own welfare. If you have access to a commuter and are savy enough to write this post, you can simply google "where to take a shower when you're homeless".

thanks. i know it's a long shot!

  • Cityapril, you can sign up for UPS mychoice - it is free and lets you "sign" for packages by checking a box online that authorizes the driver to leave the package at a place of your choosing (side door, porch, etc).

  • thanks jena. unfortunately there's no place to leave a package where it won't end up stolen, as i learned with my last old navy order. ; >

Christmas trees??

I finally live in an apartment with very tall ceilings and am very excited to have a nice, tall Christmas tree this year. Any suggestions for where I can go in the area to buy a tree this year??

  • Julie Bean heavy coffee drinker

We have gotten good trees from the St. Matthias tree lot on Western, 2 blocks north of Lawrence Ave. Staffed by parents; funds support their school.

  • Used to go to Gethsemane even though it was far (it was close to my mom's and we had a tradition of buying our trees together). For the past couple of years, I've gone to Christy Weber on Grand. Trees have held their needles well.

viaduct

Now that the weather is getting so very cold will the city do something about the homeless community living under the bridge at Belmont and Kedzie? I am just curious the city comes and periodically removes their belongings will they still do that during the winter monthes?

  • I'm not positive that this is the case but I read Teresa's comment/question as more of a concern for the homeless not that she is wanting the police to remove their belongings.

  • Carter O'Brien lager beer rioter

Well, I was just there. And while I do not hate on any of these folks, their gauntlet of junk encroaching on the public way is impossible to understate. Nobody gets to claim the sidewalk for their own use AFAIC. And for the record, their ties to drug running and gangs are well known.

i don't see much of a distinction, it's still an ad regardless of who posts it. how can you tell if the person posting is a tenant or a landlord? if you make exceptions that are easy to get around, you're left with no rule at all.

  • I'm sorry if I upset anyone. I thought since there was an option to check to post about needing a place to live I could post here. I thought it would be better on here to share with the community that we were looking for someone to take over our lease. We are not a broker or the management company. And also maybe someone on here had a friend or relative looking to move to the area.

Free presentation on astrology

I will be giving a free presentation "Introduction to Astrology" on Thursday, December 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Eisenhower Public Library, 4613 N. Oketo in Harwood Heights. It looks like I am not allowed to announce it as an event, so if you are interested in more details, feel free to comment or message me. I'll be discussing such topics as Mercury retrograde, why it's a waste of time to read your daily horoscope, how the outer planets influence world events, and more. The Library is handicapped accessible and there is a large parking lot on the north side. As mentioned above, this event is free and open to the public.

Graffiti- should I be worried?

Our block (2500 palmer) is relatively quiet from what I can tell. Found this beauty on my garage today, already submitted report for removal and intend on working on removing it myself later today. Long message, anyone know what it means or should I be extra worried? Anyone know of recent activity in the area?
Thanks!

We have been in the neighborhood a little over 20 years and I would say this behavior comes in waves. I do recommend having a can of paint or graffiti remover yourself as it is best just to cover/remove these tags as quickly as you can. The taggers will get bored of your garage more quickly then and will choose a different target. Talk to your neighbors and work together to communicate about any tagging or suspicious activity.

As far as worrying...I wouldn't lose any sleep over this as it is random and nothing against you personally.

  • The police were aware of this at last nights Caps meeting.

Lost dog near Altgeld and California named "Louie"

Around 6.30am when I was out walking my dog a neighbor was calling for his dog, Louie (Louis?).

He seemed distraught, and in not shire if he's posted here yet. He described Louie as a brown / tan, very large pit bull. He lives in the apartments on he corner of Altgeld and California above Mops Beauty. I didn't get a name or apartment number.

If anyone has seen Louie, feel free to message me and I'll try to find the owner.

Keep a lookout for Louie, it's cold out there!

  • If you find the owner, tell him to post flyers all over the area right away-it can be very effective. Thanks for helping out.

  • I live nearby on Logan and will keep my eye out. Please let us know if he finds him.

Need HVAC

Greetings fellow neighbors-

Need of your expertise/advise on this matter. My furnace's circulating water pump is making a loud noise when starting and the noise continues while operational. Can anyone recommend a solution and/or reasonable HVAC technician?

Thank you, all.

  • @Morgan-- Love radiators. We kept ours, too, and did SpacePak for air conditioning. It is expensive, but there is no way that we wanted to switch to forced air. Rough estimate is ~$12,000 for a 1600 sf floor.
