Man Apparently Poisoning Yard to "Keep Dogs Off"

My dog got really sick last week, was repeatedly vomiting blood. She never gets into food or garbage, and it didn't make sense, especially sense she hasn't been away from us long enough for us not to notice. Took her to the hospital, and they kept asking if she got into rat poison.

My dog got really sick last week, was repeatedly vomiting blood. She never gets into food or garbage, and it didn't make sense, especially sense she hasn't been away from us long enough for us not to notice. Took her to the hospital, and they kept asking if she got into rat poison.

She's on a 6-pill cocktail now for the next couple weeks, and has formed pancreatitis.

My husband ran into a neighbor today that is spreading the word about a man who lives on Dickens, between Kedzie and Sawyer, who apparently decided to poison his lawn to keep dogs away. He spoke of another neighbor who's dog was also very sick last week, because he rolled in it. Apparently, the man just added a sign to "Stay Off Lawn," but had no sign last week.

The thing is, if this is rat poison, it won't keep dogs off, as it's smell is meant to entice animals into eating it. This isn't safe at all, even with a sign, and puts animals and children in danger.

I'm curious if other owners have similar experiences lately, or if anyone knows otherwise about this situation, since it's secondhand information.

Also, please be careful walking your pups and kids around here!

  • Regardless of which side your dog pees on, you shouldn't have to worry about psychopaths actively trying to kill them. I hope he's reported to Animal Control and/or the police.

@rogerparker The strip of grass between a building and the sidewalk, called a parkway, is owned by the City of Chicago, always has been. It's the homeowners responsibility to take care of it in a responsible manner. Letting a dog do its business in the parkway has always been fair game so long as you pick it up. If this gentlemen is poisoning the grass of public property I'm sure there is some legal action you can take.

Cozy Corner

Does anyone know if Cozy Corner is open yet? My family misses their favorite breakfast spot!!

  • Does anyone know if the grocery store is planning to relocate and open nearby? I like Cozy Corner but I am kind of bummed they forced out my favorite local grocery store. The prices were great and the store clerks were awesome. Plus, it was the only place I could find truffle oil in Logan Square! I'd really love to have another spot like it nearby! It was a neighborhood gem for sure and a total neccesity for many people.

  • Kate,
The grocery store that was connected to Cozy Corner opened about a month ago on the 2100 block of Milwaukee Ave and across the street from Wasabi. Nice.

Movers?

Can anyone recommend some affordable and reliable movers/moving companies? I don't want to pay too much but I also want to make sure I'm working with the right business.

  • I work partially for a high-end assistant agency, and we often do moves for clients. EMS is the best, and though they are high-end quality, they are reasonably priced. I used them for so many of my clients, as well as myself, and they are always amazing!

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

  • It's called, I learned my lesson from this one. Didn't you just say you should admit to mistakes? I just did and THIS was the reason why I did. Really, not that hard to comprehend. The question is, what will you do when this turns out to be true?

  • There is a sign on the building listing the two agents showing the property. Maybe they could enlighten you on what PFW is trying to do here. Call them Jim and ask why the building owner is handcuffed.

N Kimball and W Armitage

Is this a safe neighborhood? I'm looking to move here and am not too familiar with the area.

  • It turns out, the place I'm looking at is further east, between Kedzie and California. When I copy and pasted the address into google maps it dropped the decimal (2038 instead of 2038.5). I never knew places could have a decimal! I'm guessing it is a better area since it is further east? Thanks for the help!

  • I lived near there, too. I'd say California station gets sketchy at night, too. But, great neighborhood, nonetheless. So much fun!

antique chandelier free to a good home

I'm giving away this antique chandelier if any neighbors would like it. It's got CFL bulbs in it currently. It's been in my garage for a few months now and needs a good dusting. It works great, though, and would look nice in the right dining room. Message me through the site if you'd like to come and pick it up. See attached photo. Thanks.

  • Seth! I just saw you pop up on a recent thread and I couldn't email you through your profile but I wanted to contact you, hence, resurrecting this ancient thread. It has been very happy in its new home. Thank you so much for your generosity!

i looked all over logan via craigslist and chicago apartment finders and this was the clear winner of the handful of places i saw. i think chicago apartment finders just opened an office in bucktown as well. that's how i found my place. definitely go for a walk around the neighborhood, but CAF might be worth a few hours of your time. it's free!

The house is not abandoned and it is not a story of little old grandma. I see twenty-somethings coming in and out of there all the time.

I know some neighbors have already explained the problem to them to no avail they just let it grow au naturale.

Anybody have experience getting able bodied neighbors to do the right (and lawful) thing?

I had to 'make and take' a red wiggler bin to get full credit for Master Composter degree and the winter had them 'especially happy' in the basement so I have two huge bins ready to share. You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

  • Hello! If anyone still needs worms, I have a ton! Send me a PM to erinlynn 60618 @ gmail.com These are originally from Kitty's batch.

I live in Alderman Maldonado's ward (26th, Logan Square/Humboldt Park) and have called his office 3-4 times over the last few months to ask for information. Each time I call, I talk to a receptionist and then I am transferred to a voice mail where I leave a message and never get a return call. The last time I called I told the receptionist that I had left several messages, so she said she would give the right person my contact information, and I still never heard back. I was calling about simple things such as: recycling for our block and what can be done about all the solicitation material that is left on our front steps and gates. I even called to try and make an appointment with the Alderman to discuss items in person since I work until 5:30 and cannot make it to his Monday community meetings by 6pm, but did not get a call back. His website says “An operator will take your contact information and record your issues and concerns. Then you will be referred to the proper staff or receive a call back.” But this is not true. Has anyone had any luck with Alderman Maldonado’s office?

It should not require a visit to get something done. I've called and emailed 4 times in the past 2 months weeks to get a sewer fixed that overflows every time it rains, even minimally, and blocks a lane of traffic. I've had 3 tickets closed by 311 with no response just in the last two months. I've been trying to get this fixed since 2011. It should not be this hard.

  • Agreed...can you go directly to the city on this? Can you present a 'log' of all your attempts...even a letter (certified so you know he got it) to the mayor's office? Good luck..very frustrating when all 'we' are asking for are the 'basics...

Buying a Condo

Thinking about buying a Condo around Milwaukee and Central Park.
Any feedback on the area? Are there any plans for new retail in that section of Milwaukee ave?

Thanks

  • @Jen 2 bdr is too much for me. I just need a studio or 1 bdr at the very most. I keep seeing those studio apts I mentioned all over Craigslist and they're renting for $865 and all utilities included and was wondering if anyone could tell me about that building or renting there. I know this is not what thread is about but the area is.

  • I can't tell you about renting there per se but it is a great location that I'm sad to leave. I did Google the Goldblatts lofts and it appears the 1-beds are around $1400, 2 beds are around $1900 and 3-beds for $2300. Seems like a studio would be priced around what you said. Good luck!
