What to do about a persistent car alarm?

I live at Wrightwood and Drake, and for the last 3 weeks I have heard a neighbor's car alarm go off at all hours of the night. It's the same car. It goes off 5 minutes at a time, with short breaks in between, sometimes going off 10 times in just one hour. I have heard the car alarm go off at 11pm, 2am, 4am, 6am, and 11am. So, what can I do? How do I get it to stop? I don't know the car owner but I do know the car. Should I leave a note pleading with the owner to get the alarm fixed? Something? Anything? It's a huge nuisance and is really causing me to lose sleep at this point, so I'd appreciate any advice on what I can do to get it to stop.

Agree with CMD. Hopefully the polite approach will work, but if not, the City of Chicago actually considers a car alarm just cause for 911 (not so much over disturbing the peace, which is apparently constitutionally debatable in the city and rarely enforced, but because the alarm purportedly signifies a theft in progress).

We had the same problem a few years back and notes never made a difference. In this case the car consistently parked in front of a fire hydrant, which escalated CPD's concern. They left several tickets over several days, which accumulated on the car's windshield. Eventually the car was towed.

On the up side, car alarm issues don't seem as prevalent as they were a few years ago. Good luck on resolving your situation.

After 40 minutes I had enough (I could hear it perfectly clear over my Netflix) and I called the non-emergency number for Chicago (311). I just said that I couldn't see the vehicle but I've heard it clearly for about 45 minutes she transferred me to the dispatcher. The dispatcher then send out police to patrol around and it eventually stopped.

The reason I called the police first is because I couldn't see the vehicle but I just heard it and new it was within a couple of blocks. As far as I knew, it was not an emergency and I let the police handle it.

Masada/Sultans Market Slumlords?

I don't know if it's because they're name isn't on it, that they think people don't know they own it...but the lot on California across from the 14th District Police station is a wreck...filled with litter. The owners of Masada/Sultans Market purchased this property so they could pave it over for a parking lot...even though it used to be commercial business space before the market bust. The owners of Masada/Sultans Market purchased this property so they could pave it over for a parking lot...even though it used to be commercial business space before the market bust. They promised they'd beautifully landscape this parking lot. But they're not really proving themselves with the way they've maintained this property. It took pressure from the Alderman's office to get them to remove snow from the sidewalk this winter...which they did by driving a truck onto the sidewalk to plow it. Now they can't seem to pick up one bit of litter. It's their property...and the community shouldn't have to force them to care for it and to show some pride of ownership. How about it Masada??? I seem to see able-bodied people working at their restaurant.

  • Thanks to the owners of Masada and Sultan's Market for cleaning up a bit of the lot today. Much appreciated. Whether a stroke of luck that they happen to look at the lot for the first time in months today...or they were tipped off by the Internet, mission accomplished.

  • And glad to hear the kitchen was clean!

Voice your support for Transit Oriented Development

The petition features such language as "The proposal does not provide sufficient community benefits, such as setting aside units that are truly affordable to local families, and in essence creates a "gated" community."

It's adding more affordable housing than any other private, market-rate development in Logan Square. If we save the land for Bickerdike or Hispanic Housing, we certainly could get all affordable housing, payed for with tax dollars. But is this the spot for subsidized housing?

And how many apartment complexes or condos are open to the public? Of course it's gated. Can I come sit in your home's back yard? Why is it gated!?

"We strongly urge you to postpone the April 16 Chicago Plan Commission hearing until the community has had the opportunity to give real input on the proposal."

They've had at least two very well attended public meeting on it already. How many should be held?

I see people like Anne Shaw who failed in her run for Alderman...and doesn't live anywhere near the development...opposing it on the petition. It's gotten pretty weak numbers so far...wonder how many of the other 95 signers live no where near that intersection.

  • Jeff Karova Logan Square resident

My argument has been that allowing a variance for the height in a TOD area will lead to buildings of similar or greater height, TOD or no TOD. Once you set the precedent, you can't go back.

  • Susan S. resident

Watch property prices and rents rise. To quote Nick N. in Logan Square: "because the owner wants to be paid for the value of what "could" eventually be developed."

Earth Day in Unity Park

The Unity Park Advisory Council is hosting its annual Earth Day clean up and gardening event this Saturday, starting at 10AM. There will be refreshments, bike tune-ups courtesy Boulevard Bikes, and you can donate your old books (good condition) to the Friends of the Library, do crafts with representatives from Altgeld-Sawyer Corner Farm and more! Because of the damage from the car crashing into our west-side gate there's lots of work to be done - but lots of fun to be had! And of course, if you plant a flower, you get to take a flower home.

What is Clean and Green?

Clean and Green is an opportunity for neighbors, school groups and community block clubs to team up and clean and beautify areas in their neighborhood.

The Clean and Green day of service is Saturday, April 18, 2015.

Streets and Sanitation in partnership with Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Mayor Emanuel are encouraging residents to call 3-1-1 to register to clean and beautify areas in their neighborhoods, with a focus on cleaning viaducts. The City provides the necessary tools, including white paint and painting tools, for cleaning neighborhood areas and viaducts.

  • Also, we will have lots of extra supplies at the Logan and Western viaduct (by the Skate Park) if anyone wants to help paint and clean up over there.

Let me know if you are interested. Planning to be out there at 9am.

He is not neutered and seems pretty young so I think he is most likely a stray, but I'm going to get him checked for a chip here very soon. He's really sweet. I am happy to hang onto him for a while, but could use some collective wisdom about kitten care (though I'm also contacting Tree House for resources when they open). My border collie keeps trying to herd him, though I'm more concerned about the dog at this point as the cat has already established dominance! Will post on Lost Cats of Illinois, too. You can reach me at anne.kirkner@gmail.com.

Any chance it might be this man's little male black cat? He also wasn't micro-chipped. Would be lovely to get him back to his rightful owner if at all possible. If not, you two seem like the perfect pet parents!! Thanks for all you've done for him so far.

  • I don't think it was him, Beebee. That man's cat was neutered. This little guy wasn't.

Also, final update on this kitty: Allie has taken him for his 'forever home' because the allergies were really bad for my boyfriend :-( But we're happy knowing he has a great home. Thanks all!

No Recycling Pick-up

Has anyone experienced lack of Recycling pick-up in recent weeks/months. It's been over 3 weeks that our bins remain filled. There is not orange sticker indicating the contents are not compliant and it seems the neighboring houses have not been picked up either. We live in the 2700 block of Logan Blvd.

Any ideas of who to contact, I understand this has been privatized.

I don't know how it is for everyone else. But I feel like they should have blue can pick ups every week and black ones every other week. At our residence we could actually get rid of a black can, we hardly ever fill up one.

  • Mine finally got picked up yesterday and every bit of all the neighbors bins were filled as well. Mj..same with us but I thought it was because of the composting... Maybe that is a suggestion for the 'city that works.'

Spotted dog, 2200 block of Springfield

Saw a tiny brownish/white colored pup (under 5 lbs, likely a chi mixed with pom) walking north on the 2200 block of Springfield last night around 9, without a collar. The dog did approach me when I called, but when it got about a foot away started barking and continued walking. I couldn't do much chasing, as my unfriendly dog was with me. If anyone is missing this pup, I hope they find him quickly, as he seemed to have a pretty bad cough / be in rough shape in general.

  • Unless you are able to sanitize yourself before walking that 25 feet to your dog you are putting your own dog in danger. Dial 311 or just post your findings here on EB and hope for the best. Did you call the City?

Stop the Madness: Tell Moreno You Want Responsible Development

The dual towers proposed for Milwaukee Avenue are grossly out of scale and character with the neighborhood and this corridor. The 125 foot long wall between the two proposed buildings is not at all pedestrian friendly. I can't make a lot of sense out of the developer's renderings, but possible slabs of concrete are not at all inviting.

Tell Alderman Moreno that you want responsible transit oriented development. Tell him how tall that should be. Tell him if you want windows and doors facing the street. Tell him at Ward01@cityofchicago.org.

Attached is a photo of the scaled model.

  • Seems to be running slow for some reason now Muskateer, but on the Alderman's website, ward1.org, they have the presentation, which I believe shows lots of illustrations of the proposed look. Seems dark metal and glass mostly.

  • Any word from those speaking against the development at today's city meeting?

Neighborhood constantly covered in trash. Any suggestions?

Hey neighbors,
Just looking for constructive ideas. Our neighborhood, specifically Lyndale between California and Sacramento is constantly covered in trash (empty bottles, plastic bags, wrappers, dog "business", etc.). Has anyone had success with curbing this behavior? Is it extra trash cans along the street? Better landscaping along the street? Better behaviors for those living in the area?

Recently someone has put up signs along our street telling people you can get fined for not picking up after your dogs, but I'm wondering if it's a carrot (more trash cans, better landscaping) vs. a stick (signs and fines) approach.

Interested to hear your perspective. Thanks,
Jeff

Dear Mr. Kamin,

I am forwarding an email I sent to my alderman, First Ward Alderman Joe Moreno, about a proposed development at the corners of Milwaukee and California. Alderman Moreno included your article, from The Chicago Tribune about transit-oriented apartments, in an information packet before a community meeting about this proposed development. As a regular Sunday paper reader of yours, I was familiar with the article. It was a very heated community meeting with many residents opposed to this development.

Below, in my letter, you will find my reasons for opposing this particular development. I was greatly disappointed in the tone you took in your article with residents opposing towers in their neighborhoods. This corner at Milwaukee and California is very much a small-scale neighborhood. Definitely unlike Milwaukee and Ashland and definitely unlike Wicker Park's Milwaukee, North and Damen. We do not even aspire to be those corners.

I am not against transit oriented development. Being a Chicagoan, I am accustomed to change. I love architecture and am an artist known for her paintings "of buildings". This development (as proposed) will be a painful addition to my corner. It will take away the smaller-neighborhood feel of my community. Architecture is about more than buildings, as you know, and the residents do not want it.

Please read my opposing reasons below in my letter to Alderman Moreno. Please revisit the corner of Milwaukee and California. See for yourself the kind of area it is. Milwaukee is a very long street that connects many different kinds of neighborhoods. Clearly, your writing was interpreted as a "thumbs-up" for this development, as it was included with the alderman's community meeting packet. However, "plopping" towers, transit-oriented or otherwise, do not always fit with a neighborhood.

Sincerely,
Julie Sulzen Zamudio

  • But I will say, if you substitute "sugary cereal" (e.g. frosted flakes, honey nut cheerios, etc.) for "candy", my parents managed to make that exception stick for my entire childhood. It can easily be done...

  • KeystoneCop, I wrote of establishing a new price for area *properties*, meaning land values. The market for land values is determined by what's buildable. This would establish that much more is buildable than even what the highest zoning classification would allow (about 7 stories).

That particular comment wasn't talking about apartment rents, though I do believe these will raise area rents as well.

Found Car Key

Found a car key today outside of Foodsmart. It is a single key, no ring, and it looks like it has been out in the elements for a while. Message me if you think it is yours.

Help Support Transit Oriented Development

Regarding the proposed apartment buildings at 2293 N. Milwaukee, while there is a petition to stop it because some people feel two meetings wasn't enough to give "real" input...here is a petition to support it.

http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/alderman-moreno-move-1

With more info here:
http://www.ward1.org/community-meeting-notes-at-haas-park-330-regarding-proposed-tod-project-at-2293-n-milwaukee/

The other petition against it seems to want less units but more subsidized housing, wants the apartment building to have no gates so it's open to the public for some reason, even though it's private property.

  • Buster- Was that a Transit Oriented Development? If not, do you think it is fair to say that a TOD would have a different impact on the train than a regular large residential building?

  • It was not designated TOD, but was very close to an El stop. Most people either worked from home or took the El. Very few drove each day.

  • This thread is more proof that there's many circuits in the human brain that just never connect properly.

I'm glad the dog and owner reconnected.

  • You did good, so glad the dog was reunited with owner.

Dry Cleaner?

Hi All,
I'm new to the neighborhood and hoping there is a decent dry cleaner somewhere within "easy" walking distance (anywhere inside Pulaski/Belmont/Kedzie/Fullerton borders) since I don't have a car. The other suggestions on this site are a few years old and with all the business turnover I figured there might be some new information by now.

Thanks in advance!
