Looking for a cat sitter

Need a cat sitter to come a few times this weekend. I know there's Rover and Dog Vacay but I am too lazy to look through all of that! Would like someone experienced as she has a special diet and an Elizabethan collar on right now for her allergies ( so would have to have some experience putting that on a cat ) Otherwise she'll just purr and meow and ask for pets. Let me know how often you can come and your rates. We frequently go out of town so this could definitely be a long term thing! Our intersection is North and Albany. Thanks!

Alderman Defends Choice of Ex-Offender to Lead Political Group

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/02/us/alderman-defends-choice-of-ex-offender-to-lead-political-group.html

When Alderman Joe Moreno feuded recently with the Democratic committeeman in his First Ward constituency, he decided to form what he called an “independent Democratic political organization.”
To lead the reform-themed group, called 1st Ward First, Mr. Moreno tapped someone from a category of Chicagoans who he says need support: ex-offenders.

That someone, Juan Elias, pleaded guilty to the state charge of mutilation of election materials in 1997, after a failed run for Democratic committeeman of the 26th Ward. In 1986, he was convicted on a drug charge after the police caught him with more than three pounds of marijuana.

Gas or Sewer smell?

There has been construction going on around Kimball and Palmer for the past week and a half. Today we noticed a strong sent of what could be gas in our apartment. The upstairs neighbors have the smell as well. It seems to be coming from the drain in the basement. Our landlord received a message from Peoples stating that other people around the area have had similar complaints and that the smell is not gas but a combination of paint thinner and ammonia in the sewers. The fire department also came out and checked out the situation and said the same thing. Has anyone else had any issues with this smell?

  • I guess maybe the alderman. 311 had no clue about anything. I even asked if they knew about the street work and they were very unhelpful. They just told me that if we weren't feeling dizzy or nauseous we should be fine.

  • yourhandsmyface Palmer square. Drummer.

You may have dry water traps in your basement. Take a few cups of water and fill all floor drains, sinks, showers, etc in the lowest level in the house. The piping is designed to trap a small amount water to separate the air in your home from the sewer. These often dry out over time, and if the city is agitating the sewer you'll likely smell it

  • Barbs hey you kids, get off my lawn!

I believe this was alluded to at the first and only community meeting regarding this project, that Buono only had some kind of "purchase contract" or something... I can't remember the exact term for it, but basically, "current owner" doesn't get paid for the property until the developer has gotten the project off the ground, then it transfers hands at some point. Please some real estate/contract law person help me out here.

I have heard aldermanic candidates bashed in this forum for accepting PAC monies. Here's the truth, candidates scrape together money to run their campaign, especially when they are not an incumbent. Many times, PACs will go to the website, click the link and donate. Boom-a Pac has supported a candidate. Is this wag the dog behavior? Does this mean that that candidate is tethered to the PAC and will do their bidding if elected? Of course not! Anyone can donate to a fund. Let's look at the alternative-a new candidate has received a PAC contribution. This PAC is controversial. Should they spend time, energy and resources processing refunds of much needing funding to run the campaign?,... or just hope that common sense will prevail when people are perusing through the campaign contributors. UMMMM-common sense maybe? And seriously if this is the only negative thing you hear about a candidate it's probably because there is nothing else bad to say about them.

When a liquor establishment contributes to a fund does it mean the candidates an alcoholic? This is tantamount to assuming that a candidate who takes money from Walgreens is seeking prescription drugs illegally. Crazy right?!

I encourage you skeptics to go to the state board of elections candidate contributions. Look at who is accepting money from whom, and then imagine you are a conspiracy theorist and want to write bad things about the candidate based on contributors. Voila! You have lots of ammo. You could fabricate stories like crazy because, chances are, there are contributors that are not perfect,... or that have enemies, ...or that do not conform to certain ideals Don't let these forums and this bashing dictate your vote. Educate yourself and make your own decisions!! ...and if you read this-thanks for the few minutes of your time have a great day!

Interested in nanny share for 9 month old

Anyone have any advice or leads?

My family is currently in a nanny share, and found our share family on Craigslist (of all places!), because at the time I was looking, npnparents.org was mostly populated with families looking for nanny shares east of the expressway.

Anyway, I hope you're able to find a family with similar requirements!

Are you happy with recycling in Chicago?

...Are you confused about what you can and can't recycle? Do you find Chicago's recycling and yard waste programs to be less than ideal? Please take 3-4 minutes to complete our Recycling Survey.

Your answers will help the Chicago Recycling Coalition and Chicago's recycling community push for new and better recycling policies throughout Chicago.

CRC thanks you for your help. The more results we receive, the more accurate our survey will be. So please pass along this newsletter or the recycling survey link to people who are concerned about recycling in Chicago.

Thanks everyone! Please help spread the word, the more responses, the better the data and more effectively we can lobby for improvements.

  • Here's another thing you can do to promote recycling for all in Chicago:

If you live in an apartment building with 5 or more units that does not provide recycling services, please add your report to our site:

    www.mybuildingdoesntrecycle.com

We are collecting reports to show the city that residents of high-density apartment buildings want the Burke-Hansen ordinance (Chicago's ordinance mandating that high-density buildings provide recycling services) to be enforced.

Hi, your neighborhood shelter volunteer here. Here is accurate info and links to get lost animals back home.

If your pet is LOST:

you can do a "virtual search" of shelters up to 200 miles from your zip code on www.petharbor.com - Don't get too picky with the search terms. This is NOT a substitute for physically checking the shelter.

If your pet is microchipped, call the chip company to report your pet lost. Make sure they have your current phone and address. Keep this information current - some chipped animals are found weeks, months, or even years after they get lost.

Post to Lost Dogs Illinois on Facebook - this is a volunteer group that reunites lost pets and their owners. They may take time to approve your post.

make flyers - they should have a clear photo, a valid phone number and/or email (a "throw away" email, such as "FindFluffy@_____.com" is a good idea) and the word "REWARD". Post at vets, police and CTA stations, stores, etc.

If someone claims to have found your pet, ask them to meet you at a vet or a police station - some people try to claim $$ without giving you the pet.

It is common for pets to be lost for days before someone finds them. Look in shelters outside the city - people who find pets don't always take them to the closest shelter.

If you FOUND a pet:

If the animal is NOT friendly enough for you to safely handle, PLEASE call 311 and ask for an animal control officer to pick the pet up. CACC is NOT some sort of mass euthanasia nightmare. It may take up to 24 hours for an officer to arrive, so plan to keep the pet safely confined for that amount of time.

ALWAYS TAKE A LOST PET TO THE CLOSEST STRAY-HOLDING SHELTER. In Chicago this is CACC at 2741 S Western.

I'd also like to add that while you may have heard that the city will be shortening the stray holding period from five days to three days, that's not entirely true - most animals will still be held for a MINIMUM of five days, but private rescue groups will be allowed to transfer animals out "early" at three days, as opposed to having to wait the full five day period to transfer. Being placed in CACC's adoption program or being euthanized still will not take place until after the five days is up. Having even a few animals leave "early" for rescue will actually mean more space for animals that are coming in, which will actually mean less euthanasia.

I was going to include this in my main post but that 2000 character limit - yeesh!

I second the suggestion with ANY lost animal to meet the owner at a vet office so they can have it chipped on site (though not all of them will be able to afford it plus the registration fees) a good alternative may be to offer to buy them an inexpensive nylon collar and write their phone number on it with a permanent pen.

Chicago Animal Care and Control will allow you to post flyers there for both lost and found animals, however you have to actually go down there to post them.

Please don't judge animal control - they probably accept far more animals than you think and also euthanize far, far fewer than you think.

  • I do hope it's LIVE entertainment and not the stuff that brings too much noise and BASS. Did Mr Moyers discuss the sound issue? Since the Congress Theater was originally designed as a movie theater, it was never properly equipped for optimal acoustics inside and out. The interior is going to need sound proofing. I'm wondering how that will that affect the restoration process?

Intro and Observations

I wanted to introduce myself to the community and share some observations with my fellow neighbors. I wanted to introduce myself to the community and share some observations with my fellow neighbors. I live by the Addison and Pulaski intersection (I believe that's Avondale area?), I live with my partner and his family. I had moved from Albany Park, where I was a witness to a shooting, and coincidentally I also witnessed the shooting by Addison and Pulaski last month (talk about wrong place at the wrong time).
Before I moved in with my partner he assured me that his neighborhood, or at least his block was safe. However, I'm starting to notice that, that might not be the case soon. For one I have noticed increased tagging on buildings on Pulaski, more specifically the old Frame building they are currently remodeling, the black door next to Windy Cindy Market, and many more.
More recently, this past Sunday (January 18), while driving back home we scared off two guys on our block. One ran off into the yard of a house and the other tried to casually walk away. When we drive back around they had already met up again and were walking south on Karlov by Eddy.
I have also seen an increase hit on my RSS feed for crimes in my area, around Belmont and Kevin, and that is really starting to concern me.
I would love to get to know my neighbors a lot better and see if we can come up with a way to ensure our neighborhood doesn't get any worse. I am open to any idea; meeting up, flyers, whatever it takes.
Anyway, that is it for now, hope y'all have a great Friday.

  • I live by Addison and Pulaski, but I venture regularly into the Avondale area. I was just pointing out that this increased crime activity is terrible in any neighborhood, but it's proximity especially concerns me.
Thank you guys for the other suggestions, I will definitely be looking into the CAPS meetings in my neighborhood and I will see if I can plan something with my neighbors.

  • Independence Park had this issue 20 years ago. The neighbors banded together, communicated and even went as far as patrolling the park after dark and they worked with police. The neighborhood is fine now. Patrolling could be as easy as talking to neighbors who walk dogs and ask them to be alert. I live at Addison and Pulaski also and have lived her for 15+ years with children. I second the CAPS meetings. They are very helpful.
