Dead body found in alley near laundromat on Armitage East of Sacramento?

Body of a male found dead with bag over head in alley?

  • ld2

When was this? I drive or walk by every morning and didn't see a heavy police presence today. Not saying it didn't happen, just curious.

Would you speculate as to whether this was gang related?

Love this development. I used to live right down the street from the building they put on Division and Ashland and it was a great example of smart urban design/city planning. They put dense population centers on undesirable land right next to transportation hubs and didn't offer parking. The apartments were more affordable as a result, put all the tenants in locations where they could use public transit and offered a ton of retail at the ground level to drive neighborhood foot-traffic. This is something our neighborhood should jump at!

Still looking for a decent and decently priced one bedroom

I am still looking for a decent one bedroom for ~$1000. Dog Friendly and nice kitchen please. I have worked in the area for 4.5 years and am a reliable tennant who wants to be closer to my work in Bucktown. Please let me know of any potentials.

  • I have no idea if its still available or what condition its in, but I was walking my dog on Sun and saw a "For Rent" sign for a one bed priced at $900 on the corner of Kedzie and Fullerton on the east side of the street.

  • There is a sign on my block, can't remember the address, but the sign is in the yard of a red brick 2 flat on the 2700 block of Troy. It's for an apartment on the 3100 block of Diversey, though, which is very close by. I saw it said something about a one bedroom for $800 or maybe $850, can't remember exactly.

Mozart Elementary School

Hi. I am wondering what are other parents' thoughts and feelings about this school are.
If you have good or bad experiences you would like to share, I would appreciate it. I have a five year old and a three year old and this school is my neighborhood elementary school and I would like to find out what the learning environment is like there. It would help me decide if I should look for alternatives such as private, charter or home schooling. Thanks!

  • Every Kate new mom, park walker

I would highly recommend touring any school you are considering. That can give you a very strong impression about how the school operates.

We are sending our son to Brentano in the fall (I think they have a few spots left in preK). Its a small school with a strong positive culture and rigorous academics. Its also in Logan Square, which I love. I really want my kids to go to school with our friends and neighbors. Yay for neighborhood schools! You can call for a tour here -- 773.534.4508

Lost Tabby Kitten Seen Near YMCA

Hey everyone, my friend saw this kitten last night around 8 PM outside the McCormick Tribune YMCA on Lawndale and Cortland. Not the greatest picture, but very friendly brown/gray tabby with white paws and a green collar. Looked to be less than a year old. She said it was super friendly and then climbed up a tree. Just FYI if you've lost a kitten in the area!

Sweet Cat at Logan Pets looking for a home

I just took my dog to Logan Pet (located across from the Logan Theatre on Milwaukee) and noticed a very sweet calico cat up for adoption there. She is extremely friendly and seems like she would make an incrediable companion (although apparently she doesn't get on well with other cats). If you are looking for a pet cat you may want to check her out. I didn't previously know that Logan Pets sponsors animals for adoption.

Found Dog

My roommate found a puggle, around 2 years old, around lawndale and fullerton. It looks very skinny, without a collar but it seems to know a few tricks. If anyone knows anything about this dog or has seen it, please let me know. We are putting signs up and have posted on the IL Lost Dogs page too but so far no luck.

Marcym, we use a device called Loc8tor for our very smart former alley cat. We chose not to use gps because cats tend to stay in the neighborhood where dogs will roam for miles. With Loc8tor the cat wears a beacon on his breakaway collar (looks kind of big but he does not mind at all). When you can't find your little one you turn on a hand held device and it will beep faster or slower depending on where the cat is. It is kind of like playing "Hot/Cold" when you were little. Our condo has a fenced in yard but our street smart cat will hide and wait for someone to take out the garbage and then make a run for it. The device will let us know if he is under a grill on the third floor, snuck out next door, sleeping in the bushes or has come back inside and is sound asleep in his favorite spot. If your cat got lost you would walk around the neighborhood with the device. When it located the beacon/cat it would start beeping faster. It works through concrete(stuck in basement/ someone's garage/even someone 'a house). Our cat has never been more than one building away. He will often come out of his hiding place when he hears the beacon on his collar beep, he knows we are looking for him. We got this on amazon for about $90 and can't imagine not having it.

  • What John said re registering your chip with Found Animals Foundation!
Also, CACC should have the info of the person who adopted the dog from them, however their contact info/phone number may no longer be valid.

Anyone have info about Paradise Garden?

There is a very nice looking garden at the corner of Drake and Lyndale that has a sign calling it Paradise Garden. There are many nice plants there as well as a gazebo and some benches. However, it has a fence surrounding it and I've never seen it unlocked in the year I've been living near it. Does anyone know the story behind this place? If anyone knows the owner, is there any chance it could be opened up some time for people in the area to visit and/or help maintain it?

  • I know what you mean, they could use some help but it's "private".
If you would like to do some gardening, we could use your help at Unity Park!

  • Hi Everyone! I actually live right across the street. When I moved into my building, my neighbor informed me that it is actually owned by the couple that own the building in front of it on Palmer and Drake. It has tax exempt status because it is actually a small church. They mass on Sunday mornings.

Alderman Rey Colon arrested, accused of DUI

Apparently, our local Alderman was arrested and accused of DUI recently...

http://politics.suntimes.com/article/chicago/ald-rey-colon-arrested-eisenhower-expressway-accused-dui/mon-07282014-1140am

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised if and when he gets away with it because of Chicago politics, but statements like this don't make me feel so warm and fuzzy:

“Did I make a mistake? We will see. Right now, I’m not at liberty to talk about the case at all. My legal counsel has advised me to really let folks know I have sought legal counsel and to allow the legal process to unfold at this time. I was on the Eisenhower, but I can’t really speak to it at this time.”

By September the news about Rey's DUI might have gotten buried and been forgotten. I guess it is better to have him behind the bar serving drinks than in front of the bar knocking them back and then getting into his car to drive home, but it still strikes me as a bad idea for Rey to participate so soon after being pulled over. I wonder if he will bow out and leave Will on his own?

Anyone see an accident yesterday on California?

My bike was locked to a city rack at Francis Pl. & California yesterday afternoon, and was totally destroyed sometime in the early afternoon while I worked. When discovered, I asked around & was told there was a car that hit like 5 cars between Armitage & Dickens.

I know its a long shot, but if someone saw it, I might have a shot at getting some compensation...

So sorry to hear about this. I've had the same thing happen with my bike being damaged while parked, twice actually. In both instances I filed reports (very important to do for any follow-up), but the police said nothing could be done without a witness, and lawyers or a renters insurance claim would have quickly become more expensive than the estimated damage. If the damage was that extensive and/or you had a particularly nice bike, I think putting a few posters up in the area and doing more asking around for a witness might prove worthwhile. Good luck!!

Police Activity on Western, just north of Logan - by movie theater

Does anyone know why police blocked Western Ave. just north of Logan Blvd. Saturday night? They had it cordoned off with police tape and multiple vehicles were on site. Was there an incident at the movie theater?

  • Autumn_love, thanks, and I actually agree. But LSG has had WAY too many holes in his/her stories and deliberately inflammatory posts. I am more than willing to accept most positions/beliefs, but there are times when it's all too apparent that the person espousing those opinions is nothing but an attention seeker attempting to get a rise out of people. Sadly, this is the reality of the internet and I'd rather call that out when it's as obviously expressed as LSG has done.

Effectiveness of city's lawn builder

The city recently redid about 1,300 feet of 8-inch water main on my block. Included in this project was the "restoration," including new curbs, parkway sidewalks, and repaving the street (all good things). My main question here is if any of you have experience with this turf building they laid down? Is it effective? Will the grass grow back in time before the end of the summer, or should I expect to have to reseed next spring?

Thanks!

Increased loitering at Armitage/California

Does anyone know the story behind the group that's been hanging out with increasing frequency at California and Armitage? In front of the bank, and sometimes behind it. Young adults. They're not waiting for the bus...and have been hanging out a lot more often.

  • This is a perfect thread that people are concerned as to what's going on in there neighborhood. That's a good think as that is what EB. Is good for. There is a nescitty for these kind of programs. It's just a shame that so many people have the not in my backyard attitude. This place is meant to help young individuals become better people and will in turn make. For a better neighborhood .

    Warning!!! Long and biased.

To all my fine neighbors. I make no excuses for my position. As I stated, I am a home owner of 30 years. I have seen my neighborhood rise from what was once "Hooker Alley." We had prostitues 24/7 on Armitage and California. I was here when Tastee Freeze was a bonified dump. When the strip mall on corner of A&C was a used car dealership with an owner who harbored and supported drug use and prostitution.

I have fought many, MANY, battles to better my neighborhood. Where Katakanas Restaurant now stands, was once a delapidated building housing a tire shop that conducted business on Mozart with no regard to the neighbors. Should I mention all the shootings and murders that took place in the area? When Mozart & Cortland had gang members boldly hanging on the corner and reeking havoc on the innocents.

We, dear wife and I of 29 years, were burglarized twice, car broken into three times (Several years ago) our window broken from a stray bullet.

I and SEVERAL neighbors met with Alderman Moreno to express our concerns over what could potentially happen. We were assured that, what we are now experiencing, would not happen.

We (neighbors who met with Moreno) are very upset that the issues we voiced are now our reality!

The facility only houses a small number of beds on a first come first served basis. So what are the rest who didn't get in to do the rest of the night.

I am pro helping young men and women. My line of work involves this service. These "loiterers" are not from our neighborhood, they are bused in, yet we are left to deal with the after math that neither the Alderman nor the Director of LCN are dealing with.

What to do??? What to do??

Gunshots near Wrightwood/Drake?

Around 9:30 this evening I heard a series of ~12 pops near Wrightwood and Drake. They occured within a 30 second time span, and they sounded too loud to be from a handgun, yet too infrequent to be fireworks.

Did anyone else hear the same?

The number of violent crimes and thefts reported on buses, trains and rail station platforms for the first six months of 2014 declined more than 34 percent, compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to the Chicago Tribune, theft is the No. 1 crime on the CTA. Theft declined 18 percent in the first half of 2014. Still, some riders have concerns.

i had a similar situation. i posted here a couple weeks ago about a grey and white "stray?." i talked to neighbors on either side who knew nothing but had seen her around for a long time ...after getting feedback from everyblock folk, i had booked an appointment with the grand ave anti cruelty to have the cat fixed (after first checking for a chip)...then, the cat disappeared and a couple days later the kids two doors down told me about their grey and white cat (pearl) who had recently had kittens...they were saying she was "done" with her kittens (they were weaned? they were born? not sure...) anyway, now i am going to try and talk to mom and offer to take the cat in for fix and shots (the fix is only 25 bucks -- what a deal)...i'll tell her i have a "coupon" for a free fix...i don't want to be insulting to them.....anyway, they have been keeping her in since i almost nabbed her, so that's a good thing -- but she sure was skinny before I started feeding her -- though in light of what the kid's say, maybe she fattened up for other reasons! in any case, i'd say it's important to make sure the cat is fixed and has basic shots, no matter who it belongs to...and if it is roaming and finds a better home -- so be it.

Heard three gunshots last night and my kids are scared to go outside with them there. I have called the police but they usually don't respond and it just seems to be getting worse. Suggestions?

I would contact the alderman and ask to speak to a commander at your district police station

  • I'm sorry. That sucks beyond belief. When you call the police tell them you saw a drug deal happening. Call every 20 minutes if cops don't show up. If you can get your neighbors involved that might help. I don't know why we need to live in fear of these dirtbags.

  • Were you able to get ahold of the alderman or police commander? I live down the street, I have not witnessed any of this but am not surprised. I've seen the tennis shoes hanging from the wires at George. Let me know if you need any help.

What's that noise?

I've been hearing loud bang the last two nights. They don't sound like gunshots or fireworks - more like something very heavy being dropped. Does anyone else know the source? I'd like to call 911, but I have no idea where the sounds are coming from.

If you're a night owl, they also offer discounts on the machines after midnight. As for adding time to the dryers, I'm pretty sure the only way is to remove/reinsert the card. I've also not been able to add time any other way.

  • I highly recommend Domicile Consulting to determine what is causing the issue and providing a clear action plan to resolve it. We had a similar problem with our new condo and based on their expertise, insights and direction we fixed the issue and haven't had a problem since. Can't recommend them enough.

CTA Creep Post Removal Is Equal to Victim Blaming

When someone posts about an individual in the community who is doing things that makes someone fear for their safety and / or the safety of others, and does so WITH DETAILS GIVEN, YOU DO NOT accuse that person of things such as libel, defamation, etc. You especially DO NOT accuse that person of violating that suspicious actor's privacy WHEN THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN PUBLIC!!!

When anyone is out and about in public, there is no reasonable expectation of privacy per state and federal laws, which is why we're allowed to possess and use cameras for still photography and videography.

Telling someone that they can't post the photo of a suspicious person, especially when that suspicious person is showing behavior consistent with that of a PEDOPHILE, is tantamount to telling other people who have photographed suspicious actors that they are also wrong.

I saw a post in the Logan Square forum here whereby someone photographed an actor who was "casing neighborhood cars" and posted the photo with a description of the behavior.

That the post was allowed to stay and that person wasn't attacked by the community, but I WAS attacked by all of you for reporting someone who might possibly pose a threat to the community along with the specifics and a photo, speaks to the on-going problem of sweeping male aggression and especially male sexual harassment (on-going staring and LEERING is STREET HARASSMENT) against women and children as being perfectly fine and acceptable.

Anyone remember the #YesAllWomen hashtag on twitter, and the support that got? Why are all of you trying to protect a possible pedo? What's up with that?

  • All CREEPS, male & female should be reported, you never know what the next step these creeps might take how far they think they can go!!! Even suspicious acts, you just never know!
