Looking for local shops that do vintage consignment/sale

Hello neighbors, can anyone recommend a local shop that may be interested in buying some 1960s memorabilia? Beatles and Monkees board games and teen fan magazines. I'd be happy to just get the stuff sold, but I'd take consignment as well. I've been trying to sell stuff on Craig's List and it's tough to find buyers. eBay is another option but it's again difficult to find local buyers and I'd rather not get into the complexities and time of shipping. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

  • There is a store called Forever young Dolls and Toys 7701W Belmont in Elmwood park 708 4527048 they have alot of vintage toys. Give them a call. Good luck!

  • The new store on North Ave., "Apartment 528" sells exactly what you have! Try them. They are on the north side of North, a couple of blocks west of Western.

found black and white cat

I found a black and white short haired cat in my courtyard near the Spaulding blue line entrance. I gave it some food and she was able to get close enough for me to pick her and bring her inside. any help finding the owner or a safe place for her to go would be much appreciated!

  • Jen60647 Kimball & Schubert

The cat has been around for weeks. My husband and I tried to get her earlier this week to take her in to a shelter. We thought she was a stray.

  • I'm so glad someone was able to get her inside! Was getting worried about her in this weather.

In the meantime can anyone really fault me for running a red light or for a rolling stop at a stop sign when there is CLEARLY no need for it.

I know the sticklers will say It's the law but come on.

Big transit oriented development planned near California Blue Line Stop

Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

Derisive comments about the neighbors who don't share your views isn't a generally accepted debate tactic.

I couldn't make the meeting due to family obligations, I guess that means I don't get to be a part of "Busterville," fortunately you do not appear to be a legitimate non-profit community organization that holds regular meetings.

  • Was it my "silly synopsis" you found derisive? I'm curious which comments you took offense to. I know the "silly synopsis" sounded a little jaded. But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to...

But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to prove he lived in the neighborhood because they didn't believe him (and because he was too new, his findings had no merit). And when he said his data was from the US census, a guy yelled out "Census! It makes no Sense-Us." He screamed that he didn't believe US Census data and that the guy hadn't knocked on his door to "census" him...so he didn't believe the data. You're a very clever man Carter...wise...and you're more than welcome in Busterville...whatever that is. I find your tone quite derisive. Not sure if thats what you intend.

I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

Your post was addressed to "Bicyclists" and I am a bicyclist. While I was not the sole intended recipient of your message, it WAS directed towards me, whom as you point out, you have never met. This is both annoying and rude. I am not "taking it personally", I am pointing out that you are extrapolating the behavior of a single individual and applying it to a whole group, ie stereotyping.

I read your post, it was concise and clear. I don't need you to reiterate it or explain your motives.

Mr. Brettner points out that my "mommy" also told me to be careful. At that time she was my legal guardian and I was incapable of making reasonable decisions, so that WAS appropriate. Notice also that he then goes off about "Know-it-all bike Nazis" who want control his behavior. Understand that you have provided him a platform for his own stereotyping.

If the intended goal of your post really is increase safety on the public roadway, verses say, feel better after venting on the the internet by lecturing strangers about something bad that happened to you, then you should probably reconsider the effectiveness of your actions. I doubt any of these offenders are reading your posts and I expect they are unlikely to change their behavior if they are.

With such little likelihood of effecting change and evidence of annoying unrelated third parties and hosting bike-trolls, I would suggest you not post messages in this vein.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Honestly man, you definitely ARE taking this personally, which is downright silly. If you find it "annoying and rude" to utter a politely worded and non-demeaning "be careful" reminder to people choosing to engage in an activity almost anyone can choose to engage in at a moment's notice, then I'd invite you to consider that the problem is probably your sensitivity level.

Unless you've got something positive to add to the conversation moving forward, please QUIT TROLLING this post.

It was not shots; it was a pole-mounted electrical transformer that shorted and burned out in the alley that goes north from Altgeld between Hamlin and Ridgeway. The popping went on for about an hour before the transformer completely burned out.

I'm reaching out to see if there are any neighbors that happen to have shoes that you may not want anymore. Maybe you are purging - tossing or donating, or maybe you just want to help an artist out.

If so:
Please message me! I'm looking for more classic styles - no sneakers or modern sandals. So this could be heels, pumps, oxfords, boots (depending on what kind), flats, etc. I only have a month before the installation, so I'll probably take anything!

I live in the area, and would be happy to meet in a neutral place or make a pick up!

Thanks!!!

I went by early this morning and managed to easily lure some of them down to the sidewalk (I got one lovely, young, short-haired tuxedo female I named Monopoly and a tiny, male Snowshoe Siamese kitten I named Kimchee, both went to Tree House today for tests, exams and spay/neuter). I simply do not have foster homes or adoption floor spots for all these cats. I have a foster (but no adopters) for all the little kittens, but if anyone can help foster some of these young, healthy adults/older kittens until I can get them adopted or into other foster, please do let me know (I would have them vetted before they came into your house). They've got bad food and no shelter, and one seemed pretty underweight to me....they ate the food I brought like crazed zombies - they're obviously not being fed properly. HVAC Recomendations?

Elo Folks! Got a bit of a heating problem and it's now a bit beyond us. We've replaced the coupling, and the furnace stays on for...maybe five to ten minutes, then shuts down. Pilot light out! Can anyone recommend a local person/business who's reliable and fair? A guess is a valve is shot, but I'm not going to chance making it worse. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Seth Logan Square resident for 13+ years

Are you having to relight the pilot light each time that the furnace stops working? If so, it's most likely that the thermocouple needs replacing. This should be an easy repair. Feel free to message me if I can help you troubleshoot.

  • LEH Est. in Chicago 1973

Thanks for all your suggestions folks! Nice! Very neighborly and so appreciated! I went with Manny via "Poppyboy's" suggestion. As I said, we changed the coupling, but it turned out to be a Gas Valve and a pile up of Soot. We're AOK now! Safe and Sound...a bit of a dent in the paycheck, but so worth it. I can now recommend Manny and Sub City Heating and Cooling! They were in and out in under an hour.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-29/while-you-were-getting-worked-up-over-oil-prices-this-just-happened-to-solar.html

"After years of struggling against cheap natural gas prices and variable subsidies, solar electricity is on track to be as cheap or cheaper than average electricity-bill prices in 47 U.S. states -- in 2016, according to a Deutsche Bank report published this week. That’s assuming the U.S. maintains its 30 percent tax credit on system costs, which is set to expire that same year.

Even if the tax credit drops to 10 percent, solar will soon reach price parity with conventional electricity in well over half the nation: 36 states. Gone are the days when solar panels were an exotic plaything of Earth-loving rich people. Solar is becoming mainstream, and prices will continue to drop as the technology improves and financing becomes more affordable, according to the report."

Why do bicyclists ride on the sidewalk when they don't have to?

I totally get why cyclists go on the sidewalks sometimes. I did not understand why a young guy had to speed run down Armitage on the sidewalk last night, almost plowing down my 10 pound dog. I also didn't get why the woman was riding on the sidewalk on Humboldt last night when there is the side street to the main street she could have been riding on. I also saw a guy riding on the sidewalk on Palmer, another quiet street.

Since there are so many drivers are so evil threads, I thought I would start a thread on bikers because I saw three last night on the sidewalk for no reason.

  • Susan S. resident

@Tom in Logan SQ The law is anyone over the age of 11 must ride in the street.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

^^^ Yeah but it's not enforced, at all.

While I'm a huge fan of name-calling on this particular topic, better infrastructure does reduce it. However, I tend to see the most offenders away from large artery streets that would (probably) be next in line to get a bike lane. Meaning, more bike lanes aren't going to solve the issue. People who do this have by doing so demonstrated they don't deserve the carrot, get the stick and use it.

    Cops. Tickets. Public humiliation.

Ring lost in Palmer Square

My wife was with our daughter in Palmer Square yesterday afternoon and in the process of packing up lost her engagement ring. We've had a guy come out with a metal detector to search the area to no avail. If you by chance come across a ring in the area, please let me know. We're more than happy to offer a reward.

  • Is there a certain area? Or the whole park?

  • I have a detector. Let me know where and I can check a second time. Make sure she double checks her purse. I find things in there the third time I look. : )

  • Thanks everyone. She was sitting under a dead tree on the N/NW side of the park. We had someone run that area with a metal detector yesterday. The tricky part is she also ran a couple of laps around the track and then headed back to our home, north on Kedzie. So this thing really could be anywhere.

Montreal receives over 80 inches of snow a year to Chicago's 38, my friends that live there were in shock that we in Chicago would put out furniture to save a spot for parking after digging out. They would ask--is it not a public street? Well--yes? Well we Chicagoans know it's complicated. I asked them how the city of Montreal handled it and it was so simple. What the city does when it starts to snow, they execute plowing schedules set up very similar to our street cleaning and snow removal on main arteries here in Chicago. Residents are required to move their cars off one side of the street to allow plows to remove snow up to the curbs in the am and by the the morning the other side would be removed.

I think it's brilliant--any thoughts?

I have a tiny car which helps as often people will dib out quite a generous spot. I calmly reminded her that the street space was public property which simply caused more rage. I'm paying for private parking this year to avoid the constant aggravation and potential nasty encounters. This is going to be a tough habit for some selfish Chicagoans to break.

This will be a a joke on my street since new neighbors moved in across the street with 8 cars in one family. I have even noticed that they don't even use all their cars because of the length of time some of the cars are parked. Yes, I am also not looking forward to this winter, especially since we already have parking problems here in Chicago. My blood pressure is already rising just thinking about it. That would be a great idea with the moving to one side for the plows to come in. We definitely would have to wait awhile. All streets should be one way and have the cars parked at a one way angle giving more room to park This would never work either since the city works backwards instead of forwards. Yikes, soo many cars.

Slow Your Roll--Fullerton Ave Suggested Approach

Now that Fullerton has been repaved east of Western Ave. I would like to ask the opinion of neighbors that live near there, if we can take the opportunity to reconfigure the lanes to slow down traffic in that stretch by adding protected bike lanes near the curb and have parking pushed out near the center of the street, (similar to Milwaukee Ave south of Chicago Ave). Also add the center stop signs at crosswalks to make it easier to cross. I have always found that it hard to cross the street at some points where there are crosswalks and most drivers just ignore the signage. Also in my observations it just seems to be a drag strip from California to Western. I have read studies that if the lanes are tighter, drivers in response will slow down. I envision that part of Fullerton to be like Division between Ashland and Leavitt. With it's oversize sidewalks it could be the new "it" area for outdoor cafes and such. Thoughts?

Getting back to the question of making it safer to cross Fullerton- Sergio, thanks for the reminder that there is both an elementary school and a park, which means many children will be crossing this road. Jim, thanks for the link to the site showing that people are already getting hurt here.

I would absolutely be supportive of the city re-engineering this strip to be more safe for those crossing (on foot, bike, or in a car), whether that solution includes bike lanes or not.

In its current configuration, this strip does seem to visually cue drivers to move along and not expect much cross traffic. As others have noted, there are many options (and ones more effective than signs) for modifying the physical components of this strip that would elicit more cautious east-west traffic and safer north-south traffic.

  • Just want to say that there are folks at Goethe working with I believe Active Trans (but I could be wrong) about making the areas around Haas and Goethe safer for pedestrians/cyclists.
