Park District Class Recommendations?

Hi neighbors, I know that the park district fall class registration recently opened and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for locations to enroll in good fitness (yoga/pliates) or arts (painting/drawing/pottery classes. I'm willing to travel to Irving Park, Indenpendence Park, Avondale, Portage Park, or Humboldt Park. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Dilapidated store fronts on Kedzie and Armitage?

Hi all. Does anyone know the story of the store fronts attached to the Walgreens on Kedzie and Armitage? There aren't any "for lease" signs, but it's a serious waste of space and I hate that they are just sitting there. Thanks for any info.

  • I don't like coffee, but I'll regularly go to any coffee shop that rehabs that building just so they stay in business.

  • Anybody have contact info for the building's owner?

  • Ok, Susan. You win. Hope you feel better now.

Instead of trashing Rey or others who still support him, why don't you provide a comment on the thread with your own ideas about the property?

Instead of trashing others, why don't you engage with your neighbors in a positive exchange like most of the people here are doing?

  • Susan S. resident

If giving credit to the person who's actual vision for the site was the public market idea is trashing Colon, guess I'm guilty.

If providing evidence (as you sought in another thread) is trashing the one person supporting Colon here, guess I'm guilty.

What I'm not guilty of is thinking I have any say in what you choose to write about.

Electricity provider

My new apartment allows me to choose an electric provider. Does anyone have recommendations (or warnings) they can share?

Current tenants in the unit use ComEd, so it may be easiest to stick with that, I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

Paradise Garden on Drake and Lyndale

When they left last year they entrusted a few neighbors with keys to the garden, in case it started to turn into an eye sore....as they wouldn't know how it would be cared for being back in Puerto Rico. Last year I spoke with the new renters and they assured me that they "had it....don't worry...we've got the garden under control." But, as the year has worn on....I've watched this lovely little garden become an over grown viney-jungle of sorts. It breaks my heart. I know the original owners would never have wanted that. I'm rarely on everyblock, but have been told that this garden has been mentioned before. Are there people that want to help go over and help clean it up? I have a set of keys, and the original owners gave me permission to help with it's up keep. I think I have given the renters enough time to show how much they care/ and how well they will keep up with the garden. I think it's time to see if we might be able to start a little group that might meet up once a month....have pot luck...and keep it clean. I'm unsure how to truly turn it into a "community garden" as I think it is really tied to the church somehow....but I'm sure there would be a way in the future to keep it a garden as long as it is cared for and have it then deeded to the local community. I just wanted to see how many would be interested to help and what weekend might work best for everyone. :)

Green, white and black small bird seen at river and Roscoe near WMS building about 15 minutes ago. It flew toward me.

  • if you want to catch the parakeet, get a small cage and put seed/water & let the bird see it. It may look like home to the little bird & he will go inside. Let us know what happens.

I worked for an art gallery (in old Wicker Park before the change there) that had to deal with attempted censorship by the owner of the building. In that case it was an international Israeli/Palestinian exhibit where most pieces were (arguably) more sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. The owner of the building is and was a raging Pro-Israeli Zionist. He threatened to revoke our lease, raise our rent, come in and destroy the work, etc etc.

The difference I see here is that the work in question (the censored artist) was not just making a statement on gentrification.. Rather, she personally targeted an individual .. An individual who happened to sit on the board of the festival she was to exhibit in. Love or hate Fishman, what kind of reaction would you expect? My point is, if the artist had produced and presented pieces that addressed the impact of gentrification on culture and neighborhoods in a much more universal way AND the pieces were still thrown out of the festival .. then that's some BS and this whole anti-Fishman movement would carry alot more weight. But you can't go after a dude personally and expect him to just grin and bear it. Not justifying any action made by anyone, just food for thought.

looking for some moving boxes

if anyone has moving boxes that they'd like to pass along, i'd be happy to pick up. located in Logan Square, so surrounding areas are preferable. thanks!

  • Loulu Me

Check Craigslist for the boxes closest to you. People are ALWAYS giving them away on that site.

  • I noticed that my neighbor put a bunch of moving boxes out in the alley this morning. In the alley just East of Fairfield and South or LeMoyne. I can hold them in my garage for you if they're still there this evening.

  • Thanks, Kevin! Let me know and I'll swing by.

Fire Department hiring

My husband and I just went to lunch at Van Phat and a Chicago Fireman was handing out brochures. They are looking to hire firefighters. The test dates are December 13th and 14th, and the deadline for sign up is September 16th
He said they give the test every ten years. The website is: www.cityofchicago.org/fire application.

  • Giving the test every ten years is ridiculous. Even if they don't think they need to give the test more often because they have armloads of applicants, the test should be given every year at least. It's organizational nepotism, just a slightly more subtle version than Chicago has been infamous for.

I have had Comcast for both...not good internet would go down and the tech support was horrible! AT&T Internet has been good except they charged me a lot to fix a small issue with my apartments phone line. I have DirecTv mid-range package which has worked for me and my family (wife amd two toddler daughters). They provide equipment and usually give you free NFL Sunday Ticket free for first year(if you are football fan might be a draw). Only complaints are service going out with really bad weather (maybe lasts for 5is mins), canceling Sunday Ticket is a hassle (have to wait until the start of the next year's season, like Aug., before you can do so) and the occasional sales calls (every 6-8 weeks). But theydo give a lot of free previews for extra channels so that is a nice bonus! Hope thay helps and welcome tothe neighborhood!

  • We got Uverse the moment it became available in LS several years ago (not kidding, we were the third install). No problems so far.

Logan square eagle monument

Does anyone know who takes care of the park around the eagle monument in logan square. I recently moved back to logan square and this past Saturday i took my kids for a walk around the eagle monument and found teenagers smoking weed and a lot of bums around the park area around the eagle monument.
it's sad to see a beautiful area go to waste when it can be taken care of for the residents of logan square to enjoy.
Please help by passing the word out so that the area around the eagle can be cleaned and taken care of so our children and enjoy it.

The observation I made about the eagle monument in logan square was to make the area a safer place for our children as well as for adults. I moved back to logan square this past year after being away from the area for the past 3 years. I have lived most of my life (about 30 years) in logan square and have seen a lot of changes some good some bad. The eagle monument area is the center place of logan square but everyone on here is forgetting about the surrounding area which includes the stores and nit to mention the logan movie theater. I'm just sick to see the area go to waste. I remember when my mother used to take me down Milwaukee Ave from Ashland to Kimball on the weekends to see the sidewalk sales the stores had. Now you go down Milwaukee Ave and all you see are bars and stores that are boarded up or closed down. Let's make logan square beautiful again for everyone to enjoy and be proud of. I know must of you don't remember but there used to be a lot of gangs in logan square. The difference back then was that everyone got together to make the area safer instead of pointing fingers as to whom to blame.
I'm not asking to change the world, I'm just asking to help change a small piece of the world where everyone can have fun with there family's.

  • Well state Arnie.

Monument concert / events

Hello,

Does anyone know of a calendar that has the square (centennial monument) concert / gathering events? I walked by yesterday afternoon and there was a dj / dance hapening but I didnt stop as I was running late for a movie. I also missed a concert of a band I like there a few weeks ago, as I didnt see anything about it till the day after it happened. Does anyone have any more info on these / a calendar / etc

Thanks

  • I vaguely remember someone asking something similar this summer and someone else responded with a post that the woman who organized the events moved so now it's a bit ad hoc. I didn't even see stuff listed on the LS Chamber of Commerce calendar.

Carmenza’s Day Care opening a second location in Logan Square — right behind Haas Park

Parents always seem to be looking for good daycare options, and Carmenza’s Day Care is *terrific*. Their new second location is great, as it’s right behind Haas Park — on the 2400 block of Washtenaw. I don’t want to post their phone number in a public forum, but feel free to message me if you want their contact info.

  • I can also vouch for Carmenza's if you need a reference. My daughter is on her last week there (been there since 3 months old) and now my 3 month old son goes there as well. Bittersweet!

Barber shop recommendation in Logan Square

I need to get my ears lowered. I'm just back to Logan Square after a 5-year absence, and need a new barber.

I'm looking for a spot with walk-ins and not more than $20 pre-tip. Willing to wait for a chair in exchange for attention to detail.

Where do you go?

  • Kevin_M Logan Square resident since 2007

Joe's on Fullerton is consistently voted best barber shop in the entire city (according to the Reader). The runner up for two years running is Pete's on Elston. I go back and forth to both. You will get a great haircut at either one, but sometimes the wait gets ridiculous - especially at Pete's. But Pete is a good guy - he offers you a Hamm's on the house, and will even call you when you're on deck if you choose to run some errands before they get to you.

  • Paul Smith EveryBlock co-founder. Logan Square resident.

I wound up going to Yohel's on Fullerton & Mozart, got a solid trim, didn't wait long, $15 + tip.

Trying to find a cleaning person, not a service

I've had some very bad experiences with services - mostly because of inconsistency. One week it is perfect with one person, the next barely worth paying for when a different person is sent. I'd like to find one person - not a service - who can come every other week. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

  • PetParent Founder of Pets Are Like Family

I pay mine $75 per visit. She is there for 3 hours and just cleans the living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. I do the rest myself. We usually work in tandem. She only comes about once every other month, when I'm going to have company.

  • Nora Doherty Bucktown mom & real estate tax attorney

A lot of the best cleaning ladies went back to Poland a few years ago. I still have one, though. She has been with me for 9 years and her name is Grace. She hates dirt. Let me know if you want her number. I pay her $120 for a duplex in Bucktown. It's about $20 per hour. She mostly just washes the sheets.

Anyone know what happened at the BP station on Fullerton and California

It was a bit weird, there was a Fire Marshal SUV and a Police SUV, some older people sitting down, and then what appeared to be a family gathering on the side but they didn't look distressed. It seemed like nothing bad happened but I couldn't tell.

  • The lights on the Police SUV were flashing too.

  • I heard it when it happened. Just a strange THUNK kind of sound. From what I can gather, a left turn happened when a right should have and the lady that was driving hit the BP instead of California avenue.
Her son had to pick her up.

  • I walked by right after the incident happened -- it seemed like someone had driven into the gas station.
