Oh and I love your caption under your photo about just wanting a safe place to live. You are on the right track. Now as for the daycare, I would post hours and possibly pay range on here. Have you created flyers with pull tabs as well? If you're new to the area I would be more than happy to provide you with places to post up the flyers. Good luck sis :-)

Sidewalk Repair

When asked if I "needed anything" by one of Ald. Mell's campaign workers a couple of weeks ago, I showed him the crumbling sidewalk on George between Kedzie and Troy. He said he'd get right on it. I called Mell's office today and was told by Gina they have no record of a request from anyone. She said they'll need to contact the owner of the apt. building facing the sidewalk to pay 50% of the cost of repair, per some 50/50 city program. I hadn't heard of that program until today. It's strange to require a property owner to pay above and beyond property taxes, etc. to repair city property. I know the owner, and there's no way he'll be able to afford to pay that, nor should he have to. Notwithstanding the principle of maintaining city property, a PI/negligence lawsuit may cost the city @ $25k to settle vs. repairing the sidewalk at < $5k. That makes no sense. What are my neighbors' thoughts?

  • Tracy BB Super Cute Tracy

They should allow the building owner to get their own quote from their own contractor. Bet it's half of what the city is going to charge to repair.

  • Yet another good intention goes down the drain. Thanks everyone for the input.

What the *!!##?? is happening?

Anyone hear about a woman raped by SAcramento and Schubert ? i just heard she was hit on the head with a gun and assaulted at 1pm???

  • Supposedly the guy hopped the fence and was able to get into the garage via back door. It was actually unlocked. He tried stealing a bike but ended up discarding it due to flat tires. Police were called as a neighbor has seen him. Didn't catch him and have no description yet.

    DEAR NEIGHBORS,

SATURDAY NIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 9:15 PM SOMEONE CLIMBED UP TO THE BALCONY OF OUR BEDROOM AND ILLEGALLY ENTERED OUR HOME STEALING A FEW THINGS FROM OUR ROOM. OUR BABYSITTER WAS HOME AND OUR CHILDREN WERE SLEEPING! IT APPEARS THEY WERE ONLY IN OUR HOME A FEW MOMENTS WHEN OUR DOG STARTING BARKING. WHEN OUR BABYSITTER STARTING MOVING AROUND TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON THEY MUST HAVE GOTTEN SPOOKED AND LEFT THE SAME WAY THEY ENTERED. WE ARE WRITING TO REMIND YOU TO BE VIGILANT ABOUT YOUR HOME SECURITY. THE POLICE WERE HERE AND TOLD US THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL BREAK INS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. IT SEEMS THEY SPENT A GOOD DEAL OF TIME IN THE BACKYARD SO THEY HAD TO HAVE KNOWN SOMEONE WAS IN THE HOME AND CHOSE TO ENTER ANYWAY. WE FEEL THAT OUR NEIGHBORS DESERVE TO KNOW AND ENCOURAGE YOU TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH OTHERS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. BE SAFE.

    JAMES & MAURA ....

So this was 6 days ago, the problem stems from the churches. At lukes has a community dinner on wednesay from 5- 7pm,which attracts the thugs. The church of the advent is really a huge problem. On Tues, Wed, Thurs from 10am-2pm and Saturday from 11-2pm... They feed, cloth, medicines, social help the homeless and unstable characters that are coming into our area. Twenty of these strangers hang outside and are basically in our alleys, scoping, looking!
last summer was terrible. All this is happening and the church never even notified neighbors of these programs. They do as they please .

Internet Service Providers Logan Square

What service provider do you recommend in Logan Square? I know some are not available at my specific address like RCN. All I want is a basic internet connection. Preferrably less than 50 dollars a month. Thanks!

Avoid Comcast like the plague. It is death by a thousand paper cuts. I miss my old RCN cable back when I lived in Lakeview. Reliable. Affordable.

Comcast has been a nightmare since August when they first bungled my order. They couldn't activate the line, and then they tried to charge me $100 to have a tech come do it (which is basically screwing in a coax cable). They overcharged me for the first two months and had no record of the deal I had signed up for, so I had to call to get them to update my account.

I've purchased two modem/routers trying to get better connectivity, both approved models, to "save" $8 a month and they can't get either one to work with any degree of reliability.

I have called them, and I'm not exaggerating, over two dozen times about lost signals, intermittent service and dropped connections. Speeds fluctuate frequently. Within the same five minute period I will run a speed test and the results will range from 1MB/s to 30MB/s. We had two techs out this week and both admitted that the customer service people lie on the phone to customers and don't really know what they're doing. This was obvious to me when I was told by one rep that the reason my devices wouldn't stay connected to my wifi was because I needed to set my firewall to high. Even I know that a firewall has nothing to do with maintaining a wifi connection.

My wife works from home and can't stay connected more than 90 seconds without having to log back on to the network. It is maddening. If we had ANY other real choice, we would take it, but AT&T can only deliver a max speed of 6MB/s. So we are gutting it out with Comcrap until RCN moves west of the interstate. Choose this provider at your own risk. Worst experience I have ever had with any company ever and it continues now (my iPhone just lost signal again and speed has been very slow this morning).

I have heard aldermanic candidates bashed in this forum for accepting PAC monies. Here's the truth, candidates scrape together money to run their campaign, especially when they are not an incumbent. Many times, PACs will go to the website, click the link and donate. Boom-a Pac has supported a candidate. Is this wag the dog behavior? Does this mean that that candidate is tethered to the PAC and will do their bidding if elected? Of course not! Anyone can donate to a fund. Let's look at the alternative-a new candidate has received a PAC contribution. This PAC is controversial. Should they spend time, energy and resources processing refunds of much needing funding to run the campaign?,... or just hope that common sense will prevail when people are perusing through the campaign contributors. UMMMM-common sense maybe? And seriously if this is the only negative thing you hear about a candidate it's probably because there is nothing else bad to say about them.

When a liquor establishment contributes to a fund does it mean the candidates an alcoholic? This is tantamount to assuming that a candidate who takes money from Walgreens is seeking prescription drugs illegally. Crazy right?!

I encourage you skeptics to go to the state board of elections candidate contributions. Look at who is accepting money from whom, and then imagine you are a conspiracy theorist and want to write bad things about the candidate based on contributors. Voila! You have lots of ammo. You could fabricate stories like crazy because, chances are, there are contributors that are not perfect,... or that have enemies, ...or that do not conform to certain ideals Don't let these forums and this bashing dictate your vote. Educate yourself and make your own decisions!! ...and if you read this-thanks for the few minutes of your time have a great day!

  • Emily, wow, I wish what you say could be so, but the sad state of reality in IL is that the incumbents protect their status completely and absolutely. The whole system is designed to keep them in power and create very high barriers for challengers.

This is where there are no differences between Democrats or Republicans - they all want to keep themselves in office and have a never-ending list why we should ever have Campaign Limits.

  • You can take the high road or the low road where PAC donations are concerned ... problem is many incumbents have lost their way just following the Mayor's road, some of them for decades.

Gas or Sewer smell?

There has been construction going on around Kimball and Palmer for the past week and a half. Today we noticed a strong sent of what could be gas in our apartment. The upstairs neighbors have the smell as well. It seems to be coming from the drain in the basement. Our landlord received a message from Peoples stating that other people around the area have had similar complaints and that the smell is not gas but a combination of paint thinner and ammonia in the sewers. The fire department also came out and checked out the situation and said the same thing. Has anyone else had any issues with this smell?

  • Yes...dry water traps..pour water down it..worked for me...on;y I used buckets...

  • i had this same problem a few days ago and a few buckets of water with some concentrated odor eliminator worked for me. another trick i learned from a friend is to put boric acid around the drains to stave off oriental roaches (waterbugs).

Looking for a cat sitter

Need a cat sitter to come a few times this weekend. I know there's Rover and Dog Vacay but I am too lazy to look through all of that! Would like someone experienced as she has a special diet and an Elizabethan collar on right now for her allergies ( so would have to have some experience putting that on a cat ) Otherwise she'll just purr and meow and ask for pets. Let me know how often you can come and your rates. We frequently go out of town so this could definitely be a long term thing! Our intersection is North and Albany. Thanks!

Alderman Defends Choice of Ex-Offender to Lead Political Group

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/02/us/alderman-defends-choice-of-ex-offender-to-lead-political-group.html

When Alderman Joe Moreno feuded recently with the Democratic committeeman in his First Ward constituency, he decided to form what he called an “independent Democratic political organization.”
To lead the reform-themed group, called 1st Ward First, Mr. Moreno tapped someone from a category of Chicagoans who he says need support: ex-offenders.

That someone, Juan Elias, pleaded guilty to the state charge of mutilation of election materials in 1997, after a failed run for Democratic committeeman of the 26th Ward. In 1986, he was convicted on a drug charge after the police caught him with more than three pounds of marijuana.

If your pet is microchipped, call the chip company to report your pet lost. Make sure they have your current phone and address. Keep this information current - some chipped animals are found weeks, months, or even years after they get lost.

Post to Lost Dogs Illinois on Facebook - this is a volunteer group that reunites lost pets and their owners. They may take time to approve your post.

make flyers - they should have a clear photo, a valid phone number and/or email (a "throw away" email, such as "FindFluffy@_____.com" is a good idea) and the word "REWARD". Post at vets, police and CTA stations, stores, etc.

If someone claims to have found your pet, ask them to meet you at a vet or a police station - some people try to claim $$ without giving you the pet.

It is common for pets to be lost for days before someone finds them. Look in shelters outside the city - people who find pets don't always take them to the closest shelter.

If you FOUND a pet:

If the animal is NOT friendly enough for you to safely handle, PLEASE call 311 and ask for an animal control officer to pick the pet up. CACC is NOT some sort of mass euthanasia nightmare. It may take up to 24 hours for an officer to arrive, so plan to keep the pet safely confined for that amount of time.

ALWAYS TAKE A LOST PET TO THE CLOSEST STRAY-HOLDING SHELTER. In Chicago this is CACC at 2741 S Western.

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

I'd also like to add that while you may have heard that the city will be shortening the stray holding period from five days to three days, that's not entirely true - most animals will still be held for a MINIMUM of five days, but private rescue groups will be...

I'd also like to add that while you may have heard that the city will be shortening the stray holding period from five days to three days, that's not entirely true - most animals will still be held for a MINIMUM of five days, but private rescue groups will be allowed to transfer animals out "early" at three days, as opposed to having to wait the full five day period to transfer. Being placed in CACC's adoption program or being euthanized still will not take place until after the five days is up. Having even a few animals leave "early" for rescue will actually mean more space for animals that are coming in, which will actually mean less euthanasia.

I was going to include this in my main post but that 2000 character limit - yeesh!

Question about front yard fences

My neighbor is putting up a fence to close off the courtyard of their building. Where he is putting the fence will completely block the side of my porch and if I need porch repairs or gutter repairs, the fence will make it hard to get to. The fence is on his property line but I want to know if it is legal for him to put a fence up literally 6 inches from my porch and blocking it off.
