The replacement was just as awful in a different way.

It does not have to be this way. Pilsen is filled with beautiful murals. Other great public art appears throughout our city, as others have pointed out above. Logan Square keeps putting itself forward as the home of artists; but why are they not stepping up, assuming they really are out there?

Here's a link to a painting of Logan Square I paid a friend of mine to make ten years ago that I call "Logan Square-Off"; maybe somebody could get up the scratch to have him come out and do something on that wall: https://flic.kr/p/od6B

City not responding to damage done to my property.

Hi all,
I need some help. In July, we had a new alley put in. My house is located on the corner of the alley and the street. On July 26th, one of the workers backed into my iron fence with his bobcat. My boyfriend was home at the time and went out to speak with them. He got the name of the company hired by the city of Chicago to do the work. It was Summit construction. He then called Summit and tried to get them to fix it. At first the secretary was very nice, and seemed to be trying to help him. Saying, she'll pass off the info and someone will contact us. Weeks went by, multiple calls and now no responses. We then called the police to get an assessor out to report it. Now again, weeks, and no responses. Multiple calls, and emails and we are getting no one to help.
Our fence is now rusting, and the gate door is not closing properly since the damage. It is now only getting worse.
Can anyone help us? Give us advice as to what to do. At this point, I am at a loss.
Thanks!
Kate

Thank you for the last comment. There is some very useful information there. We have filled out the claim, nearly 3 weeks ago at this point. When I call to check on the progress I am told that it is still an open case. That is why we have posted on here. Sure we know we can go to court with this, simply wanted to know if there is any way to get the attention of the correct person on the matter.

  • Spoke to some CDOT guys tonight about this very issue and they also recommended calling 311. They said they receive these complaints and follow up regularly.

Humir does mostly underground work so unless they were working on sewers at the time, it's a no brainer that Sumit bears 100% of the responsibility. Usually this gets resolved without lawyers, so good luck.

Water leaking from House

Morning, on my way to work this morning I could hear alot of water leaking from a neighbors house but it is vacant. The house was recently up for sale..I could see alot of water in the little walkway at side of house..Who do I call if I do not know who lives there?

  • ht ...

Try locating listing agent. Google the address, and it should pop up. Red fin is pretty good about placing name of listing agent and office/company as well. Then, call that agent or office, and they can go from there...

  • When I called 311 they said they would send someone out to shut it off and take a look. All seemed good by the time I arrived home. Thanks for all the suggestions

Rat problems - call 311 or the alderman?

Hi everyone. We've been noticing a LOT of rats in the alley lately. Okay, it's the city, there's bound to be rats. Well this morning, I went out my back door and ran into one climbing the stairs to my porch (in daylight - around 7am). Rats in the alley are one thing. Rats greeting me at my back door are another.

I haven't seen any signs in the alley noting that it's been baited lately - do I call 311 or the alderman to get our alley baited?

Here’s something I want you to know as your neighbor: There’s a new way to sign up for quality health coverage that fits your budget and meets your needs. It’s called the Health Insurance Marketplace. Almost 8 in 10 people who signed up through the Marketplace got help paying for their health insurance.

You could be like Sarah from Naperville, IL who got covered for only $73 a month.

Candles, signs and a vigil on Hamlin and George?

Anyone know what this vigil was for? Apparently someone named "green eyes" died. Not sure if it was gang related or if he was shot, hit by a car, etc?

  • I was considering it when things were getting loud earlier. Glad someone did it at least, hah. I'm with you though, the gang activity is quite the downer in the neighborhood.

What can I do with this? At the risk of sounding anti-capitalist, it seems a shame to let this health insurance company keep their refund amount when maybe the next of kin of this lady could benefit? Does anyone know how to track down next of kin, or more importantly if checks like this are even cashable by a dead person's survivors?

The former resident wasn't the owner, so the entity I bought from has no connection to her. In fact, the entity I bought from wasn't even the original owner, it was a church that was given the house by the heirs to the house. Less than zero connection!

Anyone had luck with antique window repair?

have some of those big old windows with original glass that are in good to fair condition but sticky / painted shut...one has missing panes. has anyone been able to find a reasonable repair source? (if it gets to be $600 or more per windows, it kind of forces you to go with new ugly windows, which is a shame as these windows have survived for more than 100 years) and do all the companies take the windows completely out to do the repairs or do any leave them in?

I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. As of late it's been erratic in my neighborhood--sometime up to takes 3 weeks to get collected. I call 311 and I am impressed that it gets picked up within a day or 2. Does anyone have insight why they don't come on a weekly basis? And how it can be set up to do so?

Teachers can (and most of them do!) work their a**es off for their kids, but if the kids don't have their parents as their FIRST and FOREMOST teachers, how can teachers succeed across the board and up to the standards they are held to? Oh, I agree. I always try to be careful. Just kind of scary to be woken up by gunshots at 5 in the morning. Be safe everyone!

  • I live around Lawndale & Cornelia also and heard the gunshots both times - Thursday and Sunday - but didn't see anything either time. I did sort of question whether it was fireworks on Sunday. When I was walking my dog on Wednesday night around 930/10pm, there seemed to be a group of men having an "animated discussion" at Eddy & Hamlin - wonder if it was related? Haven't seen the SUV they were standing by since and I walk my dog daily (sometimes twice).

On at least three separate occasions I have had conversations with some of them. I now realize they don't want to be there any more than we want them there. I was present last week when the city came and removed their belongings once again, It was heart wrenching to see the one female who stays there literally crying because she lost the last of everything she owned once again. It is very sad. I tried to put myself in her shoes. It is hard for me to understand how or why people live this way, or why some people CHOOSE to live this way. I honestly don't believe that this underpass will ever be free of the homeless. Maybe if we help them, hire them or just try to come to some kind of understanding with them we can all live with the situation, after all they have to sleep somewhere

Years ago when we first moved to the city we got a ticket for no city sticker our first week. The law is you have 30 days to obtain one (at least it was back then). We contested by mail with evidence of our least out of town, our new lease in Chicago and moving receipts and we lost.

I was so livid, I contacted Pam Zekman at CBS 2 and our case was one featured on a news story about bogus tickets. We ended up having to sue the city for our money back. We ended up winning our case and they also had to pay all our court costs. My wife was unemployed at the time so we had nothing but spare time to fight it but it did take a lot of time and effort on our part. They simply bank on people being too busy to fight tickets.

Moral of the story, even the ALJ's in this city are dirty and there's no guarantee they'll reverse your ticket even if you're right, but definitely fight in person.

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

We had a problem finding someone to put a cap on last fall, same issue with small project. I got Lindholm roofing to come out, it was a really quick job ended up costing just under $300 I believe- more than I thought it should've but they were really the only people I could get out anytime soon. They were prompt and professional and worked out well.

  • Thanks so much, Margv! We used them in the past, as few years ago, and I don't know why we didn't think to try them again.

Landscaper Recommendation

Hey all,

My landlord is looking for recommendations for someone who can come out and do simple yard work (mow the lawn, trim the hedges, etc). Anyone have any recommendations? Nothing too fancy, but must be able to bring their own equipment.

  • Megan60622 Humbolt Park Resident

    Try MT Lawncare - they're great !

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

We've used Dynamic Landscaping for years - very reliable, reasonable prices, they do yard maintenance, storm cleanup, gutter cleaning, etc. 773-774-2447

  • Craig Coleman at (872) 600-7840 is who I use. Very happy with him.
