Neighborhood Dog Barking Constantly

Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

There may be an underlying behavior or health issue here. Dogs with separation anxiety will bark constantly when left alone. Sometimes the owner's are not even aware of this issue until told by a neighbor.

Another issue is senior dogs with dementia type issues can bark far too often. I have a 16 year old dog and in the last six months or so she has really increased her barking. She's having some doggie dementia type issues.

Just wanted to mention a couple of these possibilities as may help the conversation w/ your neighbor.

When I tried to explain, they said we'll look into it...yeah right! So what good are all of these ordinances, if the police won't abide to them because they don't even know they exist? BTW...it was a 24th district squad.

Another Package Theft

At 2pm today a package was stolen from my front porch near Armitage and Sawyer.
I was able to get a look at the theives from behind as they walked out of the alley and onto Armitage Ave near Kedzie, and two women witnessed the theft.

They are wearing all black, head to toe. One man was black and the second hispanic, both about 5'6- 5'8.

UPS claims they left the package with someone, but they clearly did not.
BE CAREFUL and have packages sent somewhere else, especially for the holiday season.

  • Liz

    No luck folks. I tried!

  • I live on Fullerton but always my dog between splauding and sawyer and I've noticed a black male walk around the nieghborhood and scouting the area. One day after I walked my dog, as I was heading to work I saw him on another block carrying packages. I just didnt know where exactly on sawyer he had gotten them from. Its a shame we have to be careful.

@Carter: We might be on the same page about something:

"The question becomes to what degree should zoning be used to encourage one form of land use over another. That's the tool in the City's toolbox, so to speak.

Substantial zoning bonuses which will create brand new high rise towers in a neighborhood of lower-density historic architecture will encourage the settling of one economic class of people and the removal of another. [snip] The evidence is that we see shrinking populations of lower-middle class people raising families by the L stops in Wicker Park, Bucktown, Old Town, Lincoln Park and Lake View."

I like that the TOD ordinance seems to be fueling proposals to build many units near transit station, but it may be building too many units than the community prefers.

I'd like to see transit-oriented zoning used as a tool to also spur smaller, multi-unit buildings (2-4 flats, courtyard bldgs) by perhaps preventing low-density bldgs so close to transit.

Across from Goethe elem. school is a huge parcel of land that's being turned into 7 single-family homes on Medill Ave. That's land near a good school & 3 blocks from the California station.
    http://j.mp/goethe_homes

Zoning could have been used to require 2-4 unit buildings so that more families have a chance of benefiting from that location but instead the zoning district here makes building 2-4 unit residences on those parcels *illegal*.
    http://j.mp/zoning_singlefamily

A "transit overlay district" would be something new to Chicago and could do away with the piecemeal zoning of differing densities, one right next to or mixed in with the other. You might see Bx-1 next to Cx-2 and then a Rx-4. Create concentric zoning circles that keep the density uniformly high nearest the train station and then drop off the further away you get.

Here's a screenshot of the zoning that includes the California Blue Line station and the Goethe school houses (empty area northwest of the RM-5 zone).

Let's Get our Video Cameras Connected to CPD District/Cental Command

Being the IT Dept and administrator to the cameras that protect our Condo association since 2009, I have seen firsthand the power this tool has to solve crime. We've been subpoenaed twice and have produced useful video evidence for another dozen or so incidents over the last 5 years that all have helped make this community stronger. High ranking CPD Chief McNaughton has already successfully launched a pilot program in his previous position in Lawndale and we're very close to the reality where hiding from the law is no longer an option.

Has anyone had the cops use a screen grab from a store-bought webcam connected via wifi? My ADT guy said that unless the security system uses closed circuit/hardwired and sealed system the cops won't use it because it could be tampered with (at least in the eyes of the court)--just curious if that is in fact the case, or if he was just being by the book.

  • PR

I work in law enforcement. The police and prosecutors will use any and all video. The defense attorneys might make a stink about video being tampered with but that rarely sticks if ever. The cops have forensic people to verify that the video hasn't been tampered with in. Get whatever system you can afford. Even crappy video is better than nothing.

Yet another package stolen

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a heads up, had a package stolen from my porch on the 3200 block of W. McLean Ave. FedEx tracking number states "left on porch" at 11:26 am. I got the mail at noon, nothing there.

We generally request packages to have signature on delivery, however this was a gift sent from my in-laws (actually the last package they shipped went missing as well). I work from home, doorbell never rang.

I filed a police report, had FedEx run a "trace", etc.

If you happen to see this fancy ottoman hanging out in a nearby alley give me a shout I guess!

http://www.hayneedle.com/product/garrettdoublestorageottomanwithtraysideottomans.cfm

Thanks!

  • FedEx will hold your packages at any of their locations without a fee. I usually have mine held at the Kinko's in Division and it's very easy to pick up as they are open late and on weekends. UPS is not nearly as flexible unfortunately

  • But there is a UPS at the corner of Californai and Armitage, in the shopping center.

Orange Tabby (name is Chief)

I found an agency that would take in the Orange Tabby from Lawndale if someone is willing to pick up and drop it off. Not sure how to go about this. They believe that the cat is held just for up to 7 days.

  • Scooter's Mom Buena Park resident

This is a relief. Also, if he appears to be further neglected by his current owners, I would be willing to foster him and get him veterinary care until a "forever" home is found. Thanks everyone!

  • PAWS is doing free neutering until the end of the month at their clinic. Also Tree House had affordable services at their clinic in Bucktown. It would be a good idea to pass this info along to the cats owner.

Finally - you need a diverter so the downspout stops water when all the barrels are full....the downspout should just run into an area of your yard where you can plan water-loving plants like these: http://www.prairiemoon.com/native-plants-for-lakeshore-wetland-restoration/

Our yard is completely full of prairie plants, whose roots go down 6-8 feet. Our downspouts are all disconnected. Doesn't cause us any problems at all...you just have to plan for it and we save a bunch of money watering our gardens because of the rain barrels.

If you need any help planning this out, drop a note and I'm happy to share what I know!

Orange Tabby found on Lawndale now at CACC

I spoke to Dr Abby at Felines & Canines. She is aware of the situation and said they are not able to pick up the cat, but will take him in and put him up for adoption if we could get him to them. She knows me and said she would do this as a favor. I am just not sure what it entails to pick up the cat. When I call CACC they will not release any information to me.

  • You can check out CACC Cat Transfer Teams FB page for instructions on how to pull the cat. Basically you will have to get an approved rescue to put a hold on him and get him pulled.

Shooting at Pulaski and Addison?

Just went out to the 7-11, and there is police tape up, a cruiser there, and obvious little markers for ballistics, with an officer snapping pics. The guy at the 7-11 said that either two cars were shooting at each other, or that a fight over at Brudders went out onto the street and one person shot another. Anyone have any details?

  • Frank Skony Long time Resident

Clarification - the tape and cruiser are outside of the Manee Thai restaurant on Pulaski.

  • from the Tribune this morning: A 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 10:20 p.m. in the Old Irving Park neighborhood, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The man was seating in the front passenger seat in a jeep in the 4000 block of West Addison Street when a male walked up and fired gunshots.

The man was shot in the right thigh and was driven to the 17th District police station before being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition stabilized.

Hi friends - I wanted to share an exciting potential opportunity for the Logan Square neighborhood - to be the home of the "Foodseum" - Chicago's first Food Museum!

I learned about this project in the works a couple of weeks ago through an article on Eater.com http://www.eater.com/2014/11/24/7276629/chicagos-first-food-museum-foodseum-campaign Their website has more details: http://www.foodseum.org/#home

They are in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to open their first interactive exhibit as early as Spring 2015: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/foodseum/chicagos-food-museum

The location has not been decided, but I immediately thought Logan Square would be the perfect location, with all the new restaurant activity, fantastic farmer's market, and plans for a future rare-fruit orchard.

After pledging my support, I emailed my thoughts to their executive director, Kyle Joseph, who personally wrote me back to thank me. He said that they are "big fans" of LS and they have been keeping an eye out there, and agreed that LS would be a great fit. He encouraged me to pass along the word in the neighborhood and said he would be happy to speak to fellow residents and supporters.

If you like this idea, please pass it along, donate to the campaign, and email the museum founders and organizers that you would love for Foodseum to come to Logan Square!

  • LD

Agreed, I have nothing against the idea of the museum (I'd def visit out of curiosity), I just wouldn't invest in it as I am doubtful of its sustenance. Ditto for the juice bar (if the profit margins actually float the juice bar for a while, it will close as soon as the craze dies down, vitamixes get cheaper, or another, less expensive juice bar opens), although I think there's a big difference b/t restaurant/retail and hospitality/entertainment and not sure the 2 are comparable.

  • Carter O'Brien Chicagoan

There's of course nothing wrong with people having opinions. There is however a special place in hell for those who comment negatively on web stories/projects, etc they didn't even bother to visit before forming said opinions.

This week-end there was a huge hawk 'posing' on the ground while someone not quite close took phone pictures. It appeared to be @ 2' tall and eventually flew up in a near by tree and posed some more. (I haven't seen any pigeons in that area lately either.)

As 'The Miss' and I went on our walk, we saw two pretty ladies walking arm-in-arm. I think they are sisters. One has a smile that could melt the snow; the other is a special needs adult who I do not believe can speak. I always say 'Hello' and the special needs lady released her companion's hand to give me a hug...a nice big hug.

Then she started to cry. Large tears. I said "Please don't be sad" and her companion said "Oh, she cries when she is happy." I said 'Well, then just keep hugging and I'm glad you are happy'.

If you see them in the park, please do say 'Hello' (Hugs are optional...)

  • I bet you saw a Coopers Hawk. One flew into our backyard a few years back so I did a little research to identify the species. It might have been 2 ft. but in a little Chicago backyard, it looked like a giant Condor.

  • I saw a hawk that fits the description in my yard a few days ago.

  • i have seen that hawk a few times… it really looks like massive compared to the other birds around there...and I am pretty sure I have seen what is left of the rabbits/pigeons it destroys… looks like a small explosion of feathers & fur in the middle of the field, with nothing else around…

the hawk i saw had quite a bit of white on it, so the coopers hawk looks to be it

Coming soon to Diversey and Richmond

This new bar and restaurant maybe a great addition to Logan Square. I have heard several different explanations as to just what it might be, stay tuned.

  • "A large ham selection will hang from behind the bar, and every guest, whether ordering a glass of wine at the bar or sitting down for a meal, will get a complimentary wooden board with a handful of fresh slices of meat like prosciutto or Spanish-style jamon with some pickles."
    How cool...
