To those who claim I'm some paid political, I live in Logan Square, work in Network Security, and recently found Every Block while watching talks by Smart Chicago Collaborative as I'm a developer looking for a side project.
We were having a pretty respectful debate until certain persons decided they would rather go all negative and attack anyone they didnt agree with.
So to those who think its ok to accuse people of being paid off by Rahm, it's extremely offensive. My beliefs and opinions are not for sale. If that's all you have to contribute, I think its sad.
Every Block itself wouldn't be possible without the Open Data Initiative the mayor started, so to me, the choice is easy. I don't need anyone to pay me.
But maybe I will join his campaign if all the other side has to offer is negativity and name calling.

I don’t know if plugging two of the mayor’s programs while denying any impropriety is exactly taking the moral high ground. Also, proposing that EB would be non-existent without the help of the mayor is equally offensive, and I find strangely reminiscent of Al Gore crediting himself with starting the internet.

I’m not torn and you’re obviously not torn, as you initially stated. As a voter, I’m greatly concerned in regards to school closings, TIF money benefiting corporations and for profit organizations (DePaul), the increase in regressive fines and fees, and the unending corruption exposed by various news organizations. I can see what he’s doing as well, and I don’t like it. To pretend that the city will be left in shambles if we elect a true progressive is fear mongering at its finest. In regards to the looming pension crisis, the mayor has not provided any details on how he would deal this either. Both individuals need to specifics in this area and I hope we will get them in the coming weeks.

The mayor had his chance to deal with the problems facing our city, he failed, and instead we've had the same Chicago style politics. If that’s what the people want, then so be it.

Here are just a few highlights of the Emanuel tenure I’ve seen:

    http://billmoyers.com/2015/02/26/mayoral-runoff-rahm-emanuels-corrupt-governance-finally-caught/

It’s also covers how Rahm decided to “go all negative” as well. Quite sad indeed.

Artsy Pub Crawl?

I'm looking to put together a pub crawl with an art theme, and I'm specifically looking for restaurants/bars that have local art for sale on the walls. We will be starting in Logan Square but will go anywhere in the city from there. I know Dunlays, Rocking Horse, and the Green Eye typically have art for sale, anyone know of some other good stops?

Structural analysis of our home

Any ideas for someone to come analyze the structure of our home? Recently we have a few cracks along some kitchen wall seems and a few hardwood floor slats that seem to be slightly separating.

Lost Glasses

I think I may have lost my glasses somewhere near the intersection of Sawyer and Wrightwood. They're a pair of dark brown Rayban glasses that have a hint of blue on the inner frame. I'm worried they may have fallen into the snow or dropped while I was walking. If you happen to see them, please let me know!

Residential Glass repair

We have used: All-American Glass Co @ 3309 W Irving Park - 773-262-6777. They replaced a double pane window in which the seal was broken and we had condensation between the glass panes. They offer a 5-yr warranty on the repair.

This afternoon I was approached by two men in their late 20s that seemed a bit sketchy in a black dodge minivan that said they wanted to fix a dent that was in my car. I was in my car and they were in theirs. I said no thank you and they persisted to hound me saying they would and could do it right now, on the spot if I just gave them 20 dollars. At this point they were harassing me and seemed mad that I wouldnt pay 20$ to have a dent fixed. They were both very persistent and aggressive in nature. I decided to take a photo of them after they pulled away to give details on the plate to 311. At this point they reversed and rammed their car into mine hard and got out of their car. I honked and made a scene and they got back into the car and drove off. I feel like they were probably trying to rob me or steal my car. I went to the police station and they couldn't do anything since there was minimal damage to my car and I wasn't hurt, physically. The license plate was an expired temporary plate registered to a woman from the suburbs. I just want people to be aware of these guys. They seemed hard up,irrational and violent. It seemed like they had this scam down and it wasn't their first attempt. I'm glad people were around and it didn't escalate into anything worse. It was definitely a scary situation.

  • I understand not chasing the thief but the security guard could have at least assisted the lady -- see if she was hurt, take her inside, help her call the real police -- they should be trained to not just stand there and look puzzled.

The individual can stay in my apartment if need be.

What does it say about a mayor who spends millions against a field of candidates who have never run for Mayor and he gets 1000 less votes than his 1st election and almost set a record for lowest turnout ever. Maybe if there was a candidate named Apathetic he/she would have won.

1411/1412 Beat Meeting on Feb. 26

The beat meeting for 1411/1412, which had been postponed due to snow, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7pm. Beat meetings are held at St. Nicolai Church, 3000 N. Kedzie Ave.

In addition to the usual information about crime statistics, police alerts, significant arrests and neighborhood occurrences, this meeting will also feature a information on bicycle theft prevention.
With Spring approaching (allegedly), people will be using their bikes more often. With more bikes out, the number of bicycle thefts increases in spring/summer. Get some tips from CPD members who are also cyclists on protecting your bike from theft.

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

Due to time constraints, the bike theft tips will be at April's meeting. Still worth attending!

After reading a previous post that she lives in the 1st ward AND worked for that Alderman recently- I finally determined that she screwed up her paperwork and meant to file to run in the 1st ward !

As everyone knows- vital services & representation are sorely lacking in the 1st ward.
I welcome her efforts to replace Joe Moreno and finally clean up the garbage and filth around her community.

We offer a free ESL program and our intention is to not only provide a knowledge of English, but to increase the competence, confidence and capabilities of our students through community and care.

Classes are Tuesdays 6-8pm and Saturdays 10am-noon.

If you or anyone you know would like to help, contact esluv@urbanvineyard.org.

And if you know of anyone who would like to learn, or increase their knowledge of English as a second language, let them know!

What is it about the intersection of Kimball and Barry

that makes people think that traffic laws, common sense, and human decency no longer apply?

For the third time this winter a driver almost ran me over while I was crossing in the crosswalk. I don't care if there is snow on the ground and you're driving 5 MPH, I don't care if it's saturday night and you're drunk, if a pedestrian is IN the crosswalk already, you better stop at the stop sign, and stay stopped, until that pedestrian is into the other half of the crosswalk.

Sorry if anyone heard me yelling at the driver tonight and was disturbed. Next time I'm going to use my keys to scratch the hood.

  • A sure fire way to get people to slow down is to strip out a couple of inches of asphalt like they do for resurfacing. Or maybe some well placed potholes. People always slow down for those.

  • I was at Central at the red lite crossing over Milwaukee and a Police car going in the opposite direction stopped his car and told the car in front to move back over the crosswalk for the pedestrians to cross safely. Soo dangerous there where most car drivers always stop over the crosswalk. When I would live there for many years, I would always yell at them. What good was that. Chicago is like Miami and other cities. Rules of the Road, WHAT IS THAT? Welcome to Chicago.

Is the 35th Ward Alderman Race Competitive?

Given what I know of the candidates, I would expect a close race, but Ward 35 is not on any "races to watch" stories in the news, so maybe it's not as close as I would think. I'll be the first to admit I haven't researched or prepared for this election as well as I should and normally do. I know that's not very civic-minded, but it is what it is. Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

  • thanks gayle and michael for the links...which i used to see that there were permit denials in jan and feb for the old ronny's site...so frustrating.

  • I went by Tumbao on my way home from voting today and saw workers going in and out. Clearly something is happening in the space, even if it's not Scofflaw related.

What do YOU pay for Comcast???

I've had it with Comcast, just like so many others... In less than a year, my internet fee went from $77 (which I thought was absurdly high!), to $83, to $95 this month!!! My co-worker told me yesterday she pays $30, and every time that "promotional" rate expires, she complains and they give it back to her... So, I'm thinking that's some pretty significant range! So, what do YOU pay??? I'm wonder just how wide this range is...

32 Ward - Thanks

Our recycling hadn't been picked-up in over three weeks. Make sure you've also spoken to your neighbors both within your building, and as I always recommend, neighbors immediately outside of your complex (who have lived there for years) just to see what they know and integrate into your/their neighborhood, and begin finding what their experience has been and what they have seen. If you're not going to jump into a security system right away, consider starting a condo policing board but get the help of local police to understand best actions. Most of all, make efforts to smile and get to know everyone you run into in your neighborhood, even the guys who look like they are the last people who will respond. You'll find sooner if it is someone who had access, and maybe also make a few friends who can also keep an eye out.
