Found dog named "Jackie" in alley behind Tony's (Fullerton/Central Park)

Hello Everyblock! My husband and I found a very sweet dog tonight named Jackie in the alley, tied to a fence post, behind Tony's. A neighborhood kid said they'd seen her there since about 1 pm, and we found her around 8:30 pm. She has up to date rabies tags and a Home Again tag. She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody...

A neighborhood kid said they'd seen her there since about 1 pm, and we found her around 8:30 pm. She has up to date rabies tags and a Home Again tag. She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

She is probably about 30 lbs, very strong but sweet. She responds to her name, and knows commands like sit and stay. She loves chicken, but what dog doesn't.

If anyone knows Jackie's owners, please respond! We have called Home Again and they have called her owners, but they did not pick up so we're not sure what's going to happen tonight. We're letting her stay with us overnight but if you know where Jackie lives we would love nothing more than to reunite her with her owners.

Gunshots this morning (Spaulding/Dickens area)?

Was wondering if anyone else heard gunshots early this morning? My husband and I were woken up this morning by them and could hear them from our alley for over the course of at least 15 minutes. I was so half asleep that I don't know what time it was, I just know that shortly after, the sun began to rise. Also, I know it's been mentioned many times on here, but what is the proper number to call to report something like this. Is it 911? Thanks!

  • mgali1977 7 year LS resident.

That sounds about right, Tom. My husband said he heard some arguing and shots followed after. Reported this to the CAPS facilitator via email. We'll see what I hear back.

  • Did anyone see that there was a shooting on Sunday morning at the gas station on Addison and Laramie? It happened around 3am. 2 people were shot. Have you heard anything about this incident? This violence is hitting too close to home.

Did the boundaries change? Is your old school at capped enrollment? I haven't often heard of your school suddenly changing without explanation. Looking over some of the documents available at cps.edu the school report card isn't very positive but as a CPS teacher in general I know from experience that it isn't the most telling document of what is going on (http://schoolreports.cps.edu/SchoolProgressReport_Eng/609930_FUNSTON_ES.pdf). Each school now has to plan, write, and then follow up such as budget being directly related to the Continous Improvement Work Plan or CIWP. The one written in 2012 is available online and while a new one was suppose to be developed this year, the old one (http://schoolreports.cps.edu/CIWP_2012/SchoolID609930_CIWP_as_of_112212.pdf) shows some promising positive facets of the school (instructional practices, social/emotional, programming, community outreach) goals that if implemented appropriately are very beneficial to an education. The ones they have listed are considered best practice in addition to the CIWP being well-written overall (I've read numerous and unfortunately more often than not, they are poor quality). I would consider first finding out the reason for the change in school and then if it is correct, beginning the transition process to the new school by reaching out to them (getting class assignment, school supply list, and inquiring on any back-to-school celebration/orientation). Just my two cents, that could be totally worthless but oh well. Good luck!

open hydrants?

I live near Rockwell and Courtland and there has been an open hydrant for at least 12 plus hours. I called 311 last night and this morning. Would it be worth calling the fire department? How long do these typically take to close?

Thanks!

I agree with most of your statement. I do not know the individual personally, nor have I ever seen them in the act of opening the hydrant.

  • It's open again. 10 PM. And I live in a garden apartment right at the intersection and have previously been flooded through our front window so this is not good.

Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

There may be an underlying behavior or health issue here. Dogs with separation anxiety will bark constantly when left alone. Sometimes the owner's are not even aware of this issue until told by a neighbor.

Another issue is senior dogs with dementia type issues can bark far too often. I have a 16 year old dog and in the last six months or so she has really increased her barking. She's having some doggie dementia type issues.

Just wanted to mention a couple of these possibilities as may help the conversation w/ your neighbor.

As a side note, I went to take a look at the LS one last weekend; there was someone else there hauling away a huge stack of at least 8 books. The only stuff left was garbage. It's just an open box, so I realize there aren't any rules. I wasn't going to hassle the guy or make assumptions about his needs. But please be courteous, leave some for your neighbors, and contribute to the box if you can.

Abandoned home full of dogs?

I was walking my dogs on a new route this past Saturday morning and passed by a deserted-looking house that seemingly contained a pack of barking dogs. I know what two or three dogs sound like; this was way more than that, and it was particularly strange emanating from such a dilapidated home.

I could be mistaken; just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience on Sawyer, between McLean & Palmer.

  • I think it is or another one is 2116N. Sawyer. A friend reported 2116 to ACC and not sure if anything happened. Upped it to PETA-political comments unwelcome-they actually show up and mediate or offer to take dogs. The garage has an orange unsafe sticker.

  • Ha! 2053 N Sawyer is not under renovation, the owner just slaps on new siding & what-not to hide the holes in the building. It's very dilapidated & infested with rats. One almost ran over my foot a bit ago when I was walking by. There are dogs that live on the first floor, their owner is fantastic & they're taken care of but I do worry about everyone that lives in the place, it looks like it's about to fall apart with a good wind.

Obscure No Parking signs going up on Wrightwood

Seeing someone put up "No Parking" signs on Wrightwood for this weekend (starting today) around Avers, Hamlin. One of them stapled to a flat tree stump - pedestrians can see, but not cars. Pretty dumb considering there's a tree right next to the stump prime for posting.

  • The temporary no-parking signs around here are consistently sparse/non-existent this round was particularly bad though. Called 311, not sure who exactly to get a hold of though.

2600 W. Corland - CHA Building Rehab?

Hello: I've noticed the two-story building at 2600 W. Cortland is undergoing some construction. I understand this is a CHA-owned property. Is the CHA finally readying this property for someone to live in it?

Once the rehab is completed later this year, it will be returned to leasing. The property manager for this site is currently Hispanic Housing Development Corporation. The CHA Asset Manager that oversees our contract with HHCDC is Virginia Billings."

So it looks like the property may have residents by the end of the year.

Likely drug deal @ Spaulding stop today

I know someone who witnessed what they think was a drug deal going down today b/t 4:15-4:30 at the spaulding exit at the logan square stop. They didn't report it because "it was over already". They saw a dark-haired, latino-looking guy, think about 5'10", receive cash from a white guy, also thin and about 5'10" at the stop, and the dark-haired guy handed him very small baggies of something the would-be witness said they didn't think was weed. I have had nothing but positive and pleasant experiences with Rey and I am sad that I am no longer in his ward. Thankfully I will have Waguespack who is another outsider along with Rey. Just too bad that his offices are so far from Logan Square.

Rey *is* Logan Square. He is a presence known in many circuits of the neighborhood, from the YMCA, to the Milwaukee Arts Fest, to Tour De Fat, etc. Heck, even my parents know him and make sure to say "hi" whenever we see him around the neighborhood.

Painting/General Maintenance Work for Rental Property

Hi Neighbors! We recently purchased a multi-unit building in the Logan Square area and had a long time tenant of the former owner move out. I don't think the unit has been painted for a looooong time. It also needs some general "fix up" work - light fixtures replaced, some tiling, grout. Just to get it in decent shape for new tenants to move in. Does anyone have any recommendations for a budget handyman or painter who can just come through and at least give the whole unit a fresh coat of paint for a decent price? Bonus would be other handyman repairs.

Thanks!

City trees maintenance

Does anybody know whether the home owner or city is responsible for trimming tree branches from tree lawn trees that are protruding into homes?

I presume that we'll have to hire somebody, especially if we want it done soon. The branches are scratching our siding. But thought I'd check to see what others have done.

  • The city is overwhelmed with dying trees due to the Emerald Ash borer so be patient. There is no point to pruning a dying tree, if that is the case. Otherwise, the Forestry dept has a pretty lean budget for routine tree work.

You can also make your request at www.cityofchicago.org
