Mcdonalds 2707 N Milwaukee

I don't understand why ever time this Mcdonalds has a promotional event for kids, the signs are only in Spanish. Do they not want any English speaking kids at these events? This is an ongoing thing for this Mcdonalds and I find it very insulting.
Does anyone else think this is wrong??

  • Seriously robin, you want to point out something your parents accomplished, but not you? I applaud them but your implication is because they did it, so should everyone else? Do you even have an understanding about the socioeconomic differences now and then? There are disadvantages in life where people are not all in an even playing field. All you have is your background so please don't impress your singular views, since you obviously don't have a clue.

  • Susan S. resident

@Cable Mail Gonna have to correct you here. I'm pretty sure the indigenous peoples did not speak Spanish. Many languages were spoken here before Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

A neighborly opinion

Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

  • PR

Some of the strays and ferals in the area have FIV (basically feline HIV). If he gets in a fight there is a good chance he will get it. It can be both deadly and expensive. You could at least warn them with a friendly note. They are probably just young and clueless.

  • I agree that they are likely just young and clueless. They probably mean no harm, but I have to second all the opinions stated that the abundant dangers for felines living outside is too numerous to mention. If you feel you are getting nowhere after a conversation with the owners, finding a more loving home is an excellent option.

LOST GRAY CAT

We haven't seen our gray cat since around noon on Saturday October 5th. He is all gray except for 2-3 small patches of white on his chest. He is VERY friendly and vocal. He also has allergies and without medicine his left eye will be watery.

He is very loved and we would be heart broken if we lose him.

No collar but he is chipped.
Any help would be great appreciated. Phone number is 708-908-0055 call or text any time of day.

Alert! Spotted a coyote at Talman and George

Please be careful out there! Just a few minutes ago, hubby and I are driving south on Talman we spotted a coyote standing in the middle of the road, then it moved onto the sidewalk heading north on Talman. We are new to the area and had no idea they are in this area, especially the streets of Chicago. Is this a common occurrence?

Comcast outage?

Anybody else in the 1700 block area of Kedzie have flashing lights on their modem? Started about 2:30 PM today,

  • Best Buy has modems you can buy to replace the rental for about $100 or less -- you'll earn it back in less than a year. And yes, use a different solution for wifi and phone -- better options are available.

  • Jim Mitchell 11-year Logan Square resident

If you buy a modem, you will have to call Comcast to get it registered so that they recognize the device, but that's a minor inconvenience and takes five minutes.

7 AM Lawn Mowing - Very Loud

Is anybody else having consistent issues with a lawn moving company showing up at 7AM on weekends and mowing? These guys are using two standing mowers and a push mower at once plus leaf blowers. Needless to a say it is incredibly loud - so loud that it wakes us up three stories up across the street. Corner of Schubert and St. Louis.

  • Seems like its only you. So sad.

  • Yes..in my area as well. Call the company name on the truck and nicely ask them to re-schedule your area or you will have to call the city and file a complaint against the company as they are breaking the noise law (which you can look up on-line..sorry I don't have the numbers.) (but remember that soon there will be snow blowers)

It is the most annoying sound, esp. that early. Good luck!!

  • You can call 911 and report a noise disturbance. Per the city they are not supposed to start that early. Don't bother with 311 for this.

Vintage Record Player Console Repair

Hi Neighbors! I inherited a vintage RCA Victor Console Record player from the mid 60s. Parts of it work, and parts don't. I don't know what I'm doing, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of shops who might be able to take a look at this.

If anyone knows of a place that does house calls that would be great, because the entire unit is about 100lbs.

I did find an old thread on EveryBlock and some people recommended a few such as Deltronics, 20th Centruy and Mina's TV & Video, the last of which will come and pick up. Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks!

  • Anthony's Electronic Service on Irving Park and Broadway has fixed two turn tables for me. Just read the reviews.

  • Tanner at Uncharted books just had his console record player fixed. He said he knows a guy that fixes this type of record player. You might want to stop in there and ask him.

New California stop is really pretty, gotta say

There was a crowd of reporters and guys in suits this morning getting on the revamped calf. blue line stop. not that many getting on, so i had time to snap a few pix. they did a gorgeous job stripping and restoring the old doors and it really looks great...

  • Six weeks isn't a very long time when it comes to rehab, so I'm not surprised that they didn't add stairs etc... To give you some perspective, my old stop on the brown line closed for a year when they rebuilt the station, added stairs, extended the platform, etc...

  • Brandon G Brewer. Engineer. Human.

The amount of work that has to take place in 42 days is staggering. On top of that, everyone is constantly working on top of each other pretty much around the clock. There's really not much more than can be done in that time frame.

Weather it is Glenn's explanation or Colin's where the truth lies, or a bit of both, it does not explain how anyone involved in the process, from the developer, to the ploicy makers to the funding agencies, can justify spending 2.4 million building a six flat that may appraise at slightly over 1 million the day it is finished. Paradoxically, this actually helps the NIMBY people, as the more expensive affordable housing units are, the fewer can be built. Consider that if $205,000 of public funds goes into a unit of $405,000 (based on the proposed budget), the same public money can be used to build 2 units at $305,000 each, or 4 units at $255,000, costs that are not out of reach for a private developer.

Free chicken feed (spent brewing grains - malted barley, no hops used)

Free chicken feed to anyone who'll come pick it up. I've got about five plastic shopping bags filled with it (3 frozen, 2 in the fridge soon to be frozen). I usually save them for a friend who has chickens but I need the room and I won't see them soon enough. I'm in Logan Square, Mozart and Dickens. Send a PM to arrange pick-up. Sorry for the blurry pic, it was getting dark and I was cleaning up. These grains can also be used to make dog biscuits, etc., too. There are no hops in these grains, they are added to the beer later in the process (hops can be harmful to animals...).

  • Generating a lot of spent grain today if you want some, just let me know how much! I'm near Saint Louis & Schubert, and it should be ready in the mid afternoon.

  • I'll take a grocery bags worth. Send a message to erinlynn 60618 @ gmail . Thanks!

In agree with all the posts that state the parkway is city property and is fair game for dog walkers, but when I look down the street, only a small percentage of the homes/apts have a bright green and well maintained parkway. People that are walking their dog could take that in to consideration and avoid the few parkways that show the building owner is making a strong effort to make it look nice. At the very least, one could discourage his dog from peeing in a spot where the grass is beginning to look unhealthy. I think the yellow spots come from everyone letting their dogs pee in the same spots to mark territory. Just a friendly suggestion that could keep gardeners and dog owners happy.

Cat Food Donation (opened bag, unused portion)?

Any local rescue or similar that accept dry cat food donations (*opened bags*). I've gone through a few partial bags of food while switching my cat to something new. Rather than throw out perfectly good cat food, I'd like to at least try and donate.

One container is a mix of 3 flavors of Nature's Variety Instinct Grain Free (Duck, Rabbit, Chicken). Maybe 2 or 3 lbs worth. And the other is a 5 lbs. or so bag of the same brand, salmon flavor. None of them sat well with my cat for whatever reason.

The shelters are constantly in need of towels, especially during the cold winter months.

I visit the shelter rather regularly and would be happy to pick them up from you if you have a good number of (clean) towels to donate. If you'd like me to do that, feel free to send me a message and we can coordinate a pick up.

Other things that could be helpful are animal toys and pet food.

I'd like to do the right thing, I'm even willing to get on board subsidizing the promulgation of clean energy by paying a little more now so it can develop into a cost-effective solution in the future - but the other providers that come door-to-door requesting to view your last Bill all leave me rather distrusting, and with the feeling that they're all just as bad as each other

Anyone know about anything about Ethical Electric? Is it a bona fide, realistic (and most importantly VIABLE) alternative to traditional providers - or is it just another politically-motivated, special-interest, gravy-train pandering initiative? - that's a lot of hyphenated descriptions, perhaps mostly redundant.

  • I know it's been a minute since this was posted, but does anyone have any more thoughts on this? I got the letter recently as well and have been debating the switch but don't want to be slammed with way higher rates. Thanks!

Open discussion on Juice Bars

I had it parked in the same spot/same area I've been parking in for months (Talman Ave/Logan Blvd). Curious if anyone else found their tires slashed as well?

Is this common for Logan Square? Any recommendations on making my vehicle less of a target in the future?

I'm at a loss as to why my vehicle's tires were the only one slashed in the immediate area. :(

  • I live at 2548 logan, I had my tires slashed two nights ago. There were about 5 of us total on the block, and it looks like they picked one car per cross street on Logan. I was told by one neighbor that this has happened to him twice in the last week.

While it doesn't fix the tires, I hope it helps to know that it was random...

@Sergio & @VPGirl - Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear no one was affected over by you.
@Brian Beard - Thanks for the info. I guess I'm lucky they didn't take the rims, but having all four tires slashed is outrageous. I'm sorry to hear that. I did have a car stolen on that same stretch of Talman about 4 months ago. Seems like a gamble whenever parking on that stretch of street.
@ht - Sorry to hear about your brother's car. I drove my truck everyday (until the tires were slashed). I have no where to tow it to until insurance takes a look at it. Hopefully my immediate neighbors (and local CPD) will be understanding of my situation. I've got a note on the truck for the time being.

Parents always seem to be looking for good daycare options, and Carmenza’s Day Care is *terrific*. Their new second location is great, as it’s right behind Haas Park — on the 2400 block of Washtenaw. I don’t want to post their phone number in a public forum, but feel free to message me if you want their contact info.

  • Seth Logan Square resident for 13+ years

Hi, Christine. I just emailed you their contact info.

  • Please same here! We're actually looking for daycare options for early 2015 right now!
