Looking For Garbage Removal

Hi Neighbors,

Wanted to know if any of you know of affordable garbage pick/removal? I have a bunch of junk that needs to get removed after cleaning out the garage. I don't want to leave it in the alley as it may just get picked through and spread all over.

Police activity on Armitage just west of California

Any of you police action savvy insiders know what's happening?

  • mtad appears gone for good. someone scraped all their logos off the windows along with the hours and put up more cardboard so you can't see inside, though stools and tables still in there.

  • Like Maria said...here's hoping for something more people take a liking to in that location.

Found dog- small male corgi (?) mix, black collar

Hello out there! I just picked up this handsome little fella; he was running around near Drake Ave. and Milwaukee. He's got a black collar with studs on it, but no tags! He's playing with my pitbull right now. :) They're having a blast, but I'd like to find his parents. Anyone know anything?

  • He actually may be more of a beale mix, rather than corgi.

Thank you for helping this little fella out. Private message me if you need any help caring for him :)

Hi there! Anybody know of anyone from an animal shelter I could reach out to to see if they have use for a king-size memory foam mattress pad? It's approx 2" thick and I was thinking maybe it could be cut up into pieces and shoved into pillowcases for some smaller DIY pet beds. I'd give it to somebody to use however they want but I can see the ewww factor. It's been in use for a few years - so normal wear and tear including discoloration and people-divots - in a non-smoking home underneath a padded mattress cover and sheets. Only stipulation is that I need it to be picked up on 12/26, 12/27, or 12/28 - I don't have room for it so after 12/28 will be shoving it into a large box and throwing it out.

Missing Wedding Band

Hi All! I know this is a long shot, but after seeing how upset my husband is, I thought I would try. My husband lost his wedding band in the last few days and because he's a cyclist there is a chance it may have fallen off in the street. It is an unusual band that we got in Peru (where we were married by a Shaman!) and is silver with a condor (bird), puma (cat) and snake on the band. It's VERY important to us and obviously can't be replaced very easily. If you have seen it, please let me know! Thanks!

Police Presence on 2500 Block Richmond

Does anyone know why there were police on Richmond street sometime between midnight and 1:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 23? We saw one patrol car at first shining a light into a parked car in front of 2517 or 2515 Richmond. Soon there were multiple police cars. Eventually one patrolman was talking to a woman who appeared to walk from the Altgeld end of the block. She opened the car doors and trunk of the car they were looking into. We could not hear what was being said and did not hear anything outside prior to patrol car arriving.

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Police are investigating after they say a woman was attacked and robbed in the city's Logan Square neighborhood.

Police say the brutal attack happened early Wednesday morning in the 2700 block of North Whipple Street.

The woman was walking down the street just after 8 a.m. when she was reportedly grabbed from behind and dragged into a gangway, according to a release from the Chicago Police Department. The man reportedly beat the woman over the head with a gun and demanded money.

According to the release, when the victim told the assailant she did not have any money, he tried to sexually assault her.

The victim described the suspect as a Hispanic man in his mid to late 20's, standing about 5'5 to 5'7 and weighing 175 to 200 pounds. The man was described as having black hair and stubble on face. He was last seen wearing a black and white knit stocking cap, a blue button-front hooded jacket with grey sleeves, and blue jeans.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to contact Are North Police officers at (312) 744-8200.

@Mike Conover I looked into it, its basically impossible to build a new 2- to 4-flat, at least in such a way that makes economic sense. For RS-3 (which is most of the zoning in these areas), the zoning ordinance pretty clearly says you can only build two-flats if you a) have a double lot, which totally negates any increase in density, or b) if you have a city lot that is at least 20% larger than the standard size AND you’re building on a block face where at least 60% of the current structures are already multi-family housing.

This is really unfortunate as 2-flats are a great way for a first time home buyer, particularly for someone who is single and doesn't have a second source of income, to buy their first home. I own a 2-flat and always thought it curious that the city doesn't encourage the building of new flats--most of the 2- or 3-deckers date back to the 1940s on back. I don't really understand why (most) American cities have sided with condominiums over 2- or 4-flats as the way forward for small multi-unit dwellings. I'm assuming this is mostly consumer preference?

I haven't lived in west Logan Square (technically almost Hermosa really) very long. I had to move out of my apartment in Lakeview a couple of months ago when new management suddently hiked up the rent hundreds of dollars and cut off our heating. In many ways I fit the profile of a "gentrifier" (white, vegan, middle-class income) but I'm also supporting a disabled partner who is unable to work or drive so I don't exactly have money to burn either.

Including affordable housing units with overpriced condos is, I suppose, better than not including them at all. But that doesn't do anything for those like me who aren't poor enough to qualify for subsidized housing and aren't rich enough to pay more than double my current rent for less space. My partner's struggle to get access to basic health services for his disability have really opened my eyes to how punitively the so-called "safety net" treats people who fall through the ever-widening gaps in our social order. Building homes for only the very rich and the very poor leaves one such gap wide open in the middle.

I hope this kind of thing stays away from my block for a long time. I like being able to afford my home and my groceries.

Anyone in the know know what happened or is going to happen with the Ronny's bar conversion that was planned by some of the Longman and Eagle/Parsons folks? As you likely know, you can elect who your electricity supply is purchased through. Check out this website (scroll down a bit to get to the good stuff, lot of junk at the top of the page):

    http://www.citizensutilityboard.org/ciElectric_cubfacts_alternativesuppliers.html

It lists all the providers, their costs, and summary contract terms.

Note there are several that are BETTER than what the City has "negotiated" for us- in my case, the huge $~23 fee for the privilege of having the city's provider outweighs and sinks the marginally cheaper per-KWH cost.

Although everyone's tolerance varies, there are plenty of no-contract and reasonable rate providers. All that said, your friends from Entrust aren't on that list (unless I missed them?) so you can draw your own conclusion from that...

Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

When I tried to explain, they said we'll look into it...yeah right! So what good are all of these ordinances, if the police won't abide to them because they don't even know they exist? Let's Get our Video Cameras Connected to CPD District/Cental Command

Being the IT Dept and administrator to the cameras that protect our Condo association since 2009, I have seen firsthand the power this tool has to solve crime. We've been subpoenaed twice and have produced useful video evidence for another dozen or so incidents over the last 5 years that all have helped make this community stronger. High ranking CPD Chief McNaughton has already successfully launched a pilot program in his previous position in Lawndale and we're very close to the reality where hiding from the law is no longer an option.

Video cameras CAN be a valuable addition to one's security plan.

Video cameras CAN be a valuable addition to one's security plan.

But there is absolutely no point to connecting 10,000 20,000, 30,000 private security cameras to CPD. For CPD to respond based on one of the video feeds, personnel would have to SEE the ONE feed and recognize what was occurring. How can anyone monitor the thousands of streaming images in real time? It is just not possible.

I know we are hoping for a rapid - near instantaneous - police response as a crime is occurring, but we have to be realistic.

BUT what is possible is for private individuals and businesses to install good quality cams and a recording system that does not overwrite itself in less that 2-4 weeks. Once the person becomes aware that a crime has occurred, notify CPD that your video recording might be of assistance in the investigation.

And then, make the recordings immediately available to detectives.

BTW, to be of maximum value, the cams should NOT be mounted so high that the only image they record is the top of a suspect's head/hoodie. They need to record facial images, so experiment with cam placement. And cams need light, perhaps infrared.

Talk to security cam experts. I have a colleague who specializes in security cam systems. (The newest ones let you see what's happening IRT on your smart phone.) Email me if you want his contact information. There is nothing in it for me other than to get you helpful information.

PR is 100% correct about admissibility. Tampering allegations are just desperate squeaks from defense attorneys. Forensic examination can prove that no tampering occurred.

  • I am not giving CPD access to my security cams. If they ask some footage pertaining to a specific incident maybe. Unfettered access to my security cams will never happen. Don't give away your liberties so easily.

Another Package Theft

At 2pm today a package was stolen from my front porch near Armitage and Sawyer.
I was able to get a look at the theives from behind as they walked out of the alley and onto Armitage Ave near Kedzie, and two women witnessed the theft.

They are wearing all black, head to toe. One man was black and the second hispanic, both about 5'6- 5'8.

UPS claims they left the package with someone, but they clearly did not.
