What's that noise?

I've been hearing loud bang the last two nights. They don't sound like gunshots or fireworks - more like something very heavy being dropped. Does anyone else know the source? I'd like to call 911, but I have no idea where the sounds are coming from.

FOUND CAT: All black male? very friendly found around Sawyer & Milwaukee

Hello neighbors--
My roommate and I found a cat stuck on our window sill last night, and helped him down so that he might go home. However, he's showed up on our window sill again this morning, so I'm thinking he's lost.

I am assuming it's a male since it's a pretty big cat (maybe 16 pounds?) and he seems to be all black with no markings, and light green eyes.

I'm planning on keeping him at our apartment until this afternoon when I can take him to Harmony House on Elston.

I hope this helps to find his owner! Let me know if you are looking for him!

  • Jessica, you did the best you could - you did not leave the cat outside. Hopefully this kitty finds his home.

  • As Erica said, what ACS failed to inform you is that CACC does not guarantee that this cat will even make it to adopts. Only 2% of the cats brought to CACC even make it to the adoption room all of the others are euthanized if a reputable shelter does...

As Erica said, what ACS failed to inform you is that CACC does not guarantee that this cat will even make it to adopts. Only 2% of the cats brought to CACC even make it to the adoption room all of the others are euthanized if a reputable shelter does not pull them. And as we have it the shelters are full. The best solution is to reach out to your local no kill shelters for information on how to deal with this situation. We believe in TNR (trap, neuter, release) and TNA (trap, neuter, admit (if the cat is friendly). I have two colonies in the HP area and which some of them are friendlies. However, they are all s/n, vaccinated, and microchipped. The friendlies are on the waiting list to be admitted when space allows. Life outside is definitely a better choice than being brought to CACC where they can be killed when their 5-7day hold is up.

California/Milwaukee Produce Market has re-opened!!!

The California/Milwaukee Produce Market has reopened! Same ownership, basically the same set up. The owner says he'll have more produce and deli meats this week and more to come (although they seem to have most everything they used to have at the old one already)!

I'm happy to have a decent, clean and nice market in a walkable distance again. Also, the owners are very receptive to getting new products (this is a changing neighborhood...) so please introduce yourself and make friendly suggestions if you think you'll be buying something on a regular basis or think others will be also!

7am-9pm (although, he said probably 8ish on Sundays, depending on demand)

If you see this man around women, and ESPECIALLY UNDERAGED CHILDREN, BE ON HIGH ALERT!!! This pictured individual sat on the bus yesterday while my family was on the bus with me, and we were on our way home eastbound on Fullerton Ave, and LEERED at my underaged children in a sexual manner HIS ENTIRE TRIP!

The look in his eyes and the smile he wore as he lusted after my kids was absolutely sickening! By the time we reached Kedzie and Fullerton, my wife called him to my attention, and I let her know I was already aware of him and had been closely watching him from the time he got on the bus and started leering at our daughter. He would go between leering at my daughter and leering at my son. He exited the bus post haste at Kedzie and Fullerton after he knew he had been caught when I audibly called him to public attention by saying "These kids are younger than you, knock it off!"

He went to the front of the bus after he exited to retrieve his bike from the bike rack. As you can see, he was still wearing a smirk on his face after retrieving his bike.

Increased loitering at Armitage/California

Does anyone know the story behind the group that's been hanging out with increasing frequency at California and Armitage? In front of the bank, and sometimes behind it. Young adults. They're not waiting for the bus...and have been hanging out a lot more often.

  • seems like a very cool organization worthy of support.

  • rogerparker - not everyone who has a problem with with drug dealers and thieves is a white person.

Nothing about Buster's post says he's white. The fact that you assume that he is suggests that you think minorities are cool with crime. Why do you think that?

(I know, I know, I shouldn't feed the obvious trolling, but it is so incredibly ironic that someone who accuses "White People" of "fearing people that aren't White," does so by insulting people who aren't white.)

Alex Cleaner's is going out of business!

I'm sorry to see this place go. Make sure to pick up any belongings from them before August 10th!

Can anyone recommend a different cleaners in the area?

Thanks!

  • The cleaners owned their unit and put it up for sale. This building is all condo units, residential with two commercial on the ground floor. Sad to see them go, but I knew they were ready to move on. Likely a good time to retire when real estate value is up a little bit.

  • And great news about Flipside Cafe, nice bonus! Will have to try Ruby's, I have heard good things about alterations.

Man critical from Logan Square hit-and-run

http://voices.suntimes.com/news/breaking-news/man-struck-by-auto-in-logan-square/

A man is in critical condition after he was struck by the vehicle of a hit-and-run driver early Sunday in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The man, thought to be in his 40s, was hit by a vehicle about 1:05 a.m. near the intersection of Western Avenue and Logan Boulevard, police said. The motorist then drove away from the scene.

He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.

Police did not have a description of the vehicle Sunday morning.

Man casing cars this morning (Lyndale/Rockwell)

The man in the attached photo was casing cars on my block (Lyndale/Rockwell) early this morning around 6:30 am (looking into back seats). I called the police and he was gone when they arrived. Just wanted to share in case anyone else has seen this guy. He's pretty distinct, with the hat and all.

  • Craig Born and raised in the city.

Unfortunately what he was doing is no longer a crime. I still agree the police need to be called but there isn't much they can do.

  • I saw this guy out on Homer and Rockwell on Monday or Tuesday morning around 630 am. He was doing the same thing and looked very suspicious.

St. Sylvester's Preschool

My daughter will be starting pre-k/preschool at St. Sylvester's next month. She's an early September birthday, so we expect she'll be in the youngest classroom (they divide by age as I understand it). I'm wondering if there are any other parents of new students at St. Sylvester's here who might like to meet up at Palmer Square for a play date one weekend before the start of the school year.
I'm also interested in hearing about experiences with the school that others would like to share. Thank you!

  • Bummer! We've all been there though. Another time!

  • I'm holding on for dear life to these naps, I know they are going away soon! Thanks, another time would be great!

Stolen bike: it's gone :(

I saw the kid do it too. Bike is a women's vintage 52 cm Univega. Black frame with all original parts and red decals. Red rear tire, red pedals, red grip tape, and pink brake cables. The kid took it from California and Milwaukee on wed night around 10:15pm. Younger black male with a stupid mustache - he even rode away with my white BMX helmet that has the word 'Albes' on the front. I ran after him, and was literally about six inches from him but he got away. Police report filed but that is worthless.

  • So sorry about your bike! Very unfair and frustrating. Can you please share how you had it locked up and how the thief was able to work around that?

It was locked up to a bike rack under the L by the California blue line. He must have cut the lock - unfortunately it wasn't a U- lock. It actually was my girlfriends bike... The crazy thing is that I was coming down kedzie in a car (on my way to meet her) and stopped at the kedzie/Milwaukee intersection and the little POS rode past me!!! I literally jumped out if the driver seat, leaving my car to the passengers, and tried to grab the kid. I want thinking very clearly, all I knew is that I wanted that bike back. Basically, I was about a foot or two away from him and he ducked into an alley and disappeared forever :(

History of this old Gas Station?

I was having a debate with some friends over what this building at the corner of California and Altgeld once was.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it was a gas station, but is there anyone who's been in the neighborhood awhile who could add any further details?

Thanks so much.

P.S. I heard they were going to put a Trader Joe's in that building, but then the local slumlord jacked up the rent because someone stapled a flyer to a tree trying to give away a dog that they CLEARLY DON'T DESERVE TO OWN, because the dog was scared by a loud noise last night--was that gunshots or fireworks?

At least that's what I heard.

Thanks!

  • Susan--that's really fantastic. Thanks so much for that.

He regularlly re-asphaults the lot and even paints the curb yellow on Altgeld to make sure cars do not park too close to the driveway. True story (not satire) - check it out! It's a slightly off shade of yellow than the official color the city uses. Hell, I'd bet he'd even write you a citation! Glad to have neighbors that care so much about the property & its history (and rather entertaining to watch too), good for the Kowski's for holding on to their own little gold mine at Cali & Altgeld (although I agree & often thought an ice cream shop would be a nice addition)!!!

Roosters in the City

Just curious MD, where does one draw the line on not being a snitch? Is it ok to call the police if you witness gang members congregating and drinking on the public right of way. What if someone is trespassing on private property? What if they are in the act of vandalizing that property? How about if you witness someone dealing drugs on your street? It is the police departments job to protect and serve. This includes quality of life issues as well as criminal ones. While I agree that some calls are more important than others I will leave it to the professionals to make that decision.

  • ptpreserves local business owner in Humboldt park

As someone with hens, i would say talk to them first for sure. They will most likely not want to be a nuisance to their neighbors. Just give them a few weeks for rehoming, if thats the way it ends up. Its hard to find someone to take a rooster...

Tech Help: WiFi Range Extender

I need help installing a WiFi range extender for my home network. Thanks!

  • Is this the kind that uses your electrical wiring to essentially make a wired connection to another part of the house? Like the TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT. That's what I've used, with a 2nd router on the other end. Works great.

  • My brother-in-law is a tech consultant who works with small businesses and could definitely help you out. He's great, is also in Logan Square, and has my house all wired! If you're interested, I'd be happy to pass along his information.

  • Liam R Independent IT Consultant

I'm Kelly's brother-in-law and happy to help. If running a wire is an option, that will be the preferable solution due to speed and reliability, but there are plenty of good wifi-repeaters out there. The most economical solution will depend on what kind of router you currently have and what speeds you require.

Feel free to call if you would like more help. (224)325-5426

A neighborhood kid said they'd seen her there since about 1 pm, and we found her around 8:30 pm. She has up to date rabies tags and a Home Again tag. She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

She is probably about 30 lbs, very strong but sweet. She responds to her name, and knows commands like sit and stay. She loves chicken, but what dog doesn't.

If anyone knows Jackie's owners, please respond! We have called Home Again and they have called her owners, but they did not pick up so we're not sure what's going to happen tonight. We're letting her stay with us overnight but if you know where Jackie lives we would love nothing more than to reunite her with her owners.

One of the commenters said it seemed like there were a number of alternative coffee places, but the only one which makes sense for my commute - I'm coming from behind the police station - was Township, and I do not care for their coffee (or their service for said coffee, but that's another show).

I started to wonder if there were any possibility that the to-be-rehabbed Cozy Corner would offer a coffee window. While I initially doubted it would make much sense on the alley side of the business, next to the NB exit - that alley can get pretty ripe - I knew I'd go if they offered it. And then today, I saw new windows on the alley side, and some sort of indented part of the outer wall. DARE I DRREAM, NEIGHBORS? Anybody know anybody who may know if that's even a possibility?

I take a similar route to the California stop and have wanted some options too. Sometimes I trek around the corner to Cafe Mustache if I have enough time. If I'm really early I'll go over to Gaslight. Yum.

The times I've been to Cozy Corner in the past, people are always coming in for a to-go cup of coffee. The layout was pretty tight in there, though, so I could see some people not wanting to hassle with it. Perhaps with the expanded space and new layout there will be ample opportunity to stop in for coffee, even if it's not an outside window. The new openings installed on the alley side of the addition are definitely only for natural light/trash exit unfortunately.

I believe Cozy Corner has always offered coffee service @ the counter for to-go cups. Can anyone confirm this? No need for a window if they keep this up after reopening.
