Bike repair

I'm looking for a place to repair my old, gnarly bike. Who do you guys rely on?

  • Boulevard Bikes. They are nice and really quick.

Wherever you decide to go, don't wait until the weekend. These places are best in the middle of the week.

New businesses coming to Milwaukee between Spaulding and Kimball/Diversey?!

Walking to the Blue Line in the mornings I've noticed a lot of heavy work going on at the long building 2760 - 2774 N Milwaukee (from a couple doors north of Spaulding up to the Gap building). I also noticed one of the thrift shops there has a "moving sale" sign. So I was curious and looked up the permit:

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

Looking for an Optical store

Hello everybody,
I need feedbacks on a really good spot to get new eye glasses. Am looking for a place where they will actually take time to help you look for a pair that will look great and not any pair because they are nice. I went yesterday to a place and the only help I got was that they pointed out to me the frames for women and men. I feel awful now wasting my time and money. But at least I got a copy of my prescription.

It's not in the neighborhood, but if it's convenient for you to get to the Loop, I absolutely love EyeLines at LaSalle and Monroe. They are very helpful and polite, and have a fashionable eye to help you decide what shape/material/color fits your needs. Plus, they are one of the rare shops that carry the ic! berlin line of frames. After buying a pair ic! berlins, I don't think I'm ever going back to another brand. They are made from recycled sheet metal and are hingeless and screwless, so they are super light and last forever without getting stretched or bent out of shape. I recommend them to everybody.

  • While the frame selection is somewhat limited, the prices and the quality are unbeatable at Costco. I have never been so perfectly fitted for eye wear as at I have there. If you need an adjustment, it is never a problem. I can't recommend them enough!

Problem with newspapers and ads on porch

Our building, a 6 flat at Campbell and Palmer, has a huge issue with unwanted circulars, newspapers, and ads being delivered to our porch daily. There are 7 copies of some of these dropped every single day. We're a rental building so ownership of the porch is tricky, though my husband and I try our best to clean it off when we can. Does anyone know what we can do to stop this wasteful madness? It's such a waste of everyone's time and I hate to think of all that discarded paper.

  • Chicago Al Lifelong Chicagoan, documentarian, & time-traveler

Here's the link to the story we did at cbs regarding this very issue. I haven't seen any of these papers for a while and I'm glad this story and particularly the class action made a difference.

Loud, cannon-like noise around Mozart & Altgeld shot off Sunday evening

The last few years I've experienced a neighbor shooting off what sounds like a cannon (I could be wrong since I'm not a firearms person) on random dates/time when the temps are warmer. Do any of my fellow neighbors have any idea who this jerk is? It's very disruptive and sounds like we live in a war zone. Would love to rid this annoyance of the neighborhood but have no idea where exactly it's shot from.

I prepare myself the onslaught of fireworks in summer leading up to and around the holidays, but pretty much all summer. It's at the level where I really don't want to leave my house on July 4th for fear of it burning down.
To be honest, I don't really mind too much if it's just loud noise here and there and I like that people can have fun, and we can be a little less uptight and vanilla about our festivities.
Obviously call the cops if there's a real danger or 911 for fire. But I will say that the biggest 4th fireworks display actually takes place at the home of my neighbor who is a Chicago police officer. I don't think there is much anyone is going to do about it. One year a firework must have gone off in our backyard because it chipped the siding on our garage. I've also heard a firework so big, maybe a 1/4 stick, that it woke me from a dead sleep at 4am and knocked pictures off our wall. And last year someone blew up a trash can on our alley. It can get a little out of hand at times. All in good fun.

  • I don't agree that blowing up 1/4 sticks, salutes or similar is good fun for anyone except maybe the person doing it.

Looking for an artist friendly 2 bedroom

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking for a 2 bedroom in Logan and I figured it couldn't hurt to post here in addition to the rest of our online searching and hitting the pavement looking for "for rent" signs. The rents are going up so fast but we're hoping to find something max $1200 in Logan. Cat friendly and laundry in the building would be excellent. We want to use the 2nd bedroom as an office/studio space since we're both artists. Any leads appreciated!

Tosca Recording?

Hi

Wondering if anyone made a recording of the Met Opera's Tosca that was on WTTW (Channel 11) Sunday, April 6, 2014; and if you did if you'd be willing to share it for viewing.

Thanks

  • Try PBS.com. Also, if you have netflix, PBS programming is free (says the guy with no TV or rabbit ears).

I was going to say what David did. Usually PBS' web site offers both the re-airing schedule (very rare it only plays a single time -- especially since, with digital antennae, there are four WTTW-channels in Chicago) and often offers re-broadcasts. That said, not always. But found this: http://video.pbs.org/video/2365194614/ Hope that helps.

Fioretti's speech

Encouraging words of support for the needs of citizens.

“…For example, Chicago has thousands of struggling individuals with mental illness, many are poor. They don’t have good health insurance. They rely on public clinics to survive. To close their mental health clinics where they see their psychologists and social workers. Where they monitor their medication was inexcusable. […] Again this was a choice.”

The thing I appreciate most about Fioretti’s speech is that he says public policy cannot be based only on claims of “savings.”

For example, the “savings of 2 million” for closing the mental health facilities is completely wiped out if only 29 mentally ill individuals - who otherwise could have been kept out of jail through preventative care - are incarcerated over the next year (based on $190 a day in costs (http://tinyurl.com/ptp6qb2)). Not to mention the costs of supporting the now unemployed clinic workers and the lost revenue their salaries meant to their communities.

Not only should we be morally outraged at this treatment of the most downtrodden in our society. We should be offended that “savings” (real or imagined) can be the justification. Even if the City does save 2 million dollars by closing half our mental health facilities. Should that be something we view as a success?

Obviously, public policy is a balancing act and cost must be a factor. But if we’re willing to throw the mentally ill out into the street to save a buck…what aren’t we willing to do?

So,,,,30 Shootings in Chicago since Friday night? Hmmmmmm.......

Weather getting warmer, innocent people in the crossfire, concealed carry laws,,,,Seems to me we should have beat cops on patrol...

  • warmer weather crime increases - we need police presence and graffiti reported and removed - each of us should be able to walk in our neighborhood feeling safe.

  • Emilie 5-year West Bucktowner

It's also a big help to keep the front and back of your place looking cared for. It seems small, but picking up trash and making it obvious that you regularly use and care for your outdoor space makes your presence felt to everyone in the neighborhood. It can actually reduce several types of crime.

Hey EveryBlock...I am looking for a place to take my car to so that I can get a little check up on it (ie fluids and tier fill up/rotation) near Logan Square.

Nothing big, it just got checked out a month ago, but we took it on a long road trip...I am not very car savvy so I just want someone to make sure its still in good driving shape...

Do you guys know any good Mechanic shops around town?

  • I, too, SWEAR BY Rick and the Logan Square Auto Repair crew. They are flexible, usually available same-day, spot-on with time and pricing estimates (every time!), remember me when I go back, honest, speedy, and know what they are doing. I have trust issues with mechanics and they have been my go-to since I moved to the neighborhood because they have never done me wrong!

Our gentle greyhound has a puncture wound, or little mutt was lucky. These dogs were very aggressive, and one got loose twice, and the owners did not seem very concerned about it. Nick had to fight them off alone while the owners watched.

After the initial attack, one of the dogs managed to get loose a second time.

One pit bull was white female, about 80 pounds, hanging teats, recently had a litter; the second, sex uncertain, white with brown and black spots on her back, with some kind of doggie backpack. Owners were two white males, heavyset, scruffy goatees, very short hair, balding, in late 20's to mid 30's.

We plan on attending next CAPS meeting about this, but wanted neighbors to be on the lookout.

Feral Cat Colony Caregiver Substitute Needed for Wednesday 4/16 and Friday 4/18

Hi Folks. I manage several feral cat colonies in the area (all TNR'd), but will be out of town next week. My usual substitute for one colony is incapacitated. For only two days, I need someone to stop by Sawyer and George to simply fill food (I'll provide the food) and water bowls (you bring a jug full). It's quick and easy, but very meaningful. Please let me know if you can help. We can set up a time to meet over there to walk it through. Thanks!

We used to have a "Cat Lady" on the block. Dozens of cats every where. Wish we knew about trap and release then. When she moved she took most of her cats with her. Our rat problem has exploded ever since. No amount of baiting cures the problem.
Bring back the "Cat Lady". Rather have stray cats than rats, so thank you for keeping a healthy catch and release program going.

The location for the new cali milwaukee food isn't quite under the train anymore, but still in the middle of a stretch of Milwaukee ave that is a bit of a food desert. The parking lot is great there and its still a good area that people can walk to at night without being in a shady area. Also, it kinda splits the difference between the western and Cali stops, so maybe people who get off at western will start to frequent it now?

Stop the honking. How to deal?

My family recently moved to a single-family home in Logan Square and can't believe how many people honk their horns when picking up passengers AND at all hours of the night and wee-hours in the morning. After dealing with this for a year, having countless sleepless nights and our newborn baby being woken up, we are now outraged and need it to stop. I'm just stunned by this ignorant behaviour.

Does anyone have any advise in dealing with this issue?

  • Thanks for everyone's advice and comments. We've lived in the city a long time and in various neighborhoods, but this is definitely a new experience for us. We'll try speaking to a few individuals on the block and see if that helps. Happy Spring!

Living in the city is not an excuse to be rude. I've been here over 20 years and our block goes through noise cycles. Often new tenants with different habits. Honestly, I believe that some people just don't get that the noise from their horn doesn't just target the person they are trying to communicate with.

First, try to reach out to the neighbor who the horn honker is trying to get out of the house at 4am. Be courteous and neighborly. In person and/or a nice note requesting change in behavior. Give possible solutions.

No luck with that tactic. Prepare to talk to the horn honker. 4am. Put your best smile on no matter how pissed off that you are. Wear your biggest bunny slippers, fluffy robe and let your hair be as disheveled as possible. Yawn and stretch when you come outside. Tap on the window of drivers car if he/she doesn't seem threatening. Ask which door he/she would like you to knock on to help get the person out for them. Ask if the per on in the car has a cellphone. Typically the person does. Request kindly that the person uses that instead of the car horn.

Believe it or not this tactic works. Often times people just don't realize their behavior is causing others disruption.

Many neighbors have thanked me later in the day after doing this. Turns out I wasn't the only grumbling by the window looking out at the horn honker.

Do not go out yelling and screaming. This will only create a horn honking war.
If the person continues after you've tried all of the above then reach out to other neighbors and see if others are finding this annoying. Coordinate efforts. If everyone calls the police at the same time and same days they are much more likely to respond. Try to have the car's plate number for the call.

    Good Luck !

Grey and white cat found

Heck, many years ago, I was in a hotel in Atlanta for a wedding and they were inlaid into the tile.

It was considered to be a good luck charm and builders put them into the brickwork to bless the home for its lifespan. There are many cultures that put good luck charms in their homes, IE over the doorway, buried under the threshold and American builders were no exception to that tradition. IIRC, the sauvastika was also used by the Girl Scouts (I seem to remember seeing a Girl Scout pamphlet at a flea market that had the sauvastika on it).

TL;DR - sauvastikas placed on a pre-WWII building are for good luck, not Nazi sympathies.

Found a cat on Whipple Ave

Hi everyone, I found a sweet cat on the 2600 block of Whipple Ave (between Logan & Schubert) on Sunday 4/6 around 11pm. S/he is safe in my apartment but I am hoping to help him/her return home rather than having to pass him/her on to a shelter. Please contact me if you know anyone searching for a cat who snuck out of the house! logansquarecat@gmail.com

  • The cat isn't grey striped is she? There's a cat we call Cricket that is a small cute outdoor cat who I've mistaken for an indoor cat who got loose before (because she's so tiny, healthy and has a collar) but after about a dozen times seeing her its obvious she's not starving and is going home somewhere regularly. I also live on Whipple.

  • The cat was not Cricket (though someone directed me to Cricket's door to check with the owners when I first hung flyers in the neighborhood). The cat WAS, though, another outdoor neighborhood friend-- his owners call him "Kitty" and he lives on Albany. He was safely returned last Tuesday night thanks to everyone's tips & communication!

I did a little internet digging and found some articles from last Spring about the guys behind Parson's opening a bar/restaurant there. Occasionally I see people going in and out. Anybody know what's up?

  • Thanks for the info! Sounds like a great design.

I did hear that the couple behind Bang Bang sold their share in the shop to open Baker Miller in Lincoln Square. Hopefully Bang Bang can keep rolling without them.

Wow, I'm excited for a new bar in the old Ronnie's! Such a great neighborhood spot, it was kinda weird having such a dive there for so long.

Is this your cat?

This cat has been hanging around our backyard for the past few days....

  • hgarrett Avondale

Looks similar to the cat that used to belong to our elderly neighbor who moved out in December. She was his backyard cat for the past year or so. He called her Mirella Freni. If that's her, she's a sweet outdoor kitty.

  • are you near armitage and Rockwell? could a cat named spooky & thinks he's cat king of the hood.

I don't know, rent in the area has been increasing, so $1300 for a 2-bedroom doesn't seem unreasonable at all. That immediate Parker/Shubert/St Louis area is really nice and improving constantly (disclosure: I live right there, too). Before we bought in the area we rented a 2-bedroom, albeit slightly larger...

I don't know, rent in the area has been increasing, so $1300 for a 2-bedroom doesn't seem unreasonable at all. That immediate Parker/Shubert/St Louis area is really nice and improving constantly (disclosure: I live right there, too). Before we bought in the area we rented a 2-bedroom, albeit slightly larger and closer to the square, for $1450, and after we left the landlord rented it to the next couple for $1525. Since it's a below-ground unit, maybe $1300 is a touch high, but since it is all newly rehabbed maybe $1300 is right on. Hard to say, but I definitely don't think it's way off the mark.

  • Hi all, I didn't realize posting on here would create such a stir. We were very successful over the weekend with several serious parties who requested applications and the screening process is underway. Thanks for asking Petra Z!

Tax Deadline Tomorrow!

Just a reminder to all that income taxes are due tomorrow. Every year individuals do not file their taxes as they believe they are below the reporting amount. While that might be the case, you may be entitled a refund of taxes withheld from your paycheck or to the Earned Income Tax Credit (you can still get refunds you are due up to 3 years back).

If you don't file by tomorrow, you can file an extension through October to file but your taxes are due by the April 15th deadline. After that date, the government will impose penalties and interest.

Hermosa Park

Are they ever going to update Hermosa Park? I feel like I need a tetanus shot every time I take my baby there. All the factories around there should donate money to update the park.

  • Does the park have an advisory council? If so, join it; if not, form one. Many parks recently got new playground equipment. The ones that did had active volunteers advocating for them.

  • I just think that they're afraid if they do update the park, it will get vandalized or destroyed. I think most money in this neighborhood went to Ames Middle School when they first built that, and then to North Grand...both multi-million dollar schools and still under performing. I have a...

I just think that they're afraid if they do update the park, it will get vandalized or destroyed. I think most money in this neighborhood went to Ames Middle School when they first built that, and then to North Grand...both multi-million dollar schools and still under performing. I have a 12 y/o and a newborn and for my 12 y/o I decided to purchase a jungle gym for my yard and am going to do the same for this one. I too don't think that Hermosa Park is that bad, but then again...if you see some of the other parks, yes... it's quite humble.
