Logan square eagle monument

Does anyone know who takes care of the park around the eagle monument in logan square. I recently moved back to logan square and this past Saturday i took my kids for a walk around the eagle monument and found teenagers smoking weed and a lot of bums around the park area around the eagle monument.
it's sad to see a beautiful area go to waste when it can be taken care of for the residents of logan square to enjoy.
Please help by passing the word out so that the area around the eagle can be cleaned and taken care of so our children and enjoy it.

  • I can't speak for everyone but in my case I don't want my kids to be around people smoking weed. Maybe it's because I was raised in a time when respect meant something and when cursing public was bad.

  • Losing battle...have at it.

If giving credit to the person who's actual vision for the site was the public market idea is trashing Colon, guess I'm guilty.

If providing evidence (as you sought in another thread) is trashing the one person supporting Colon here, guess I'm guilty.

What I'm not guilty of is thinking I have any say in what you choose to write about.

  • Woof really hate the idea of 400+ parking spots in an area that's pretty well serviced by bus and train. That's a lot of cars buzzing around an already tight space. I'm imagining the Logan Square version of all that new development by Halsted and North and am really not into the idea. That place is a traffic nightmare.

Petition for I AM Logan Square to Remove Mark Fishman from their Board

"There is growing vocal discontent about Mark Fishman’s control and usage of the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (MAAF), as a tool to increase his substantial development and real estate holdings."

To find out more about this petition or sign it yourself: http://www.change.org/p/i-am-logan-square-ials-remove-mark-fishman-treasurer-from-your-board?recruiter=30671237&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

  • Remove Fishman and his take his ball and go home. Next years festival will be somewhere other than Logan Square. Keep that in mind.

  • Agree with rogerparker. Fishman is a huge part of the reason the festival exists in the first place and the reason it has money to continue. Removing him from the board seems only like a kneejerk reaction from a person who very publicly had a bad time at the festival this year.

Dilapidated store fronts on Kedzie and Armitage?

Hi all. Does anyone know the story of the store fronts attached to the Walgreens on Kedzie and Armitage? There aren't any "for lease" signs, but it's a serious waste of space and I hate that they are just sitting there. Thanks for any info.

  • Anybody have contact info for the building's owner?

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

From what the guys at the video store said, the smoke shop is expanding AND a coffee shop is going in. My guess is that the smoke shop's inside (west) wall will extend all the way to the north wall so the coffee shop doesn't have to share an awkward entrance with it.

Park District Class Recommendations?

Hi neighbors, I know that the park district fall class registration recently opened and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for locations to enroll in good fitness (yoga/pliates) or arts (painting/drawing/pottery classes. I'm willing to travel to Irving Park, Indenpendence Park, Avondale, Portage Park, or Humboldt Park. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Electricity provider

My new apartment allows me to choose an electric provider. Does anyone have recommendations (or warnings) they can share?

Current tenants in the unit use ComEd, so it may be easiest to stick with that, I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

Paradise Garden on Drake and Lyndale

I have lived close to this garden for over 10 years and have known the owners of the church with attached garden. When they left last year they entrusted a few neighbors with keys to the garden, in case it started to turn into an eye sore....as they wouldn't know how it would be cared for being back in Puerto Rico. Last year I spoke with the new renters and they assured me that they "had it....don't worry...we've got the garden under control." But, as the year has worn on....I've watched this lovely little garden become an over grown viney-jungle of sorts. It breaks my heart. I know the original owners would never have wanted that. I'm rarely on everyblock, but have been told that this garden has been mentioned before. Are there people that want to help go over and help clean it up? I have a set of keys, and the original owners gave me permission to help with it's up keep. I think I have given the renters enough time to show how much they care/ and how well they will keep up with the garden. I think it's time to see if we might be able to start a little group that might meet up once a month....have pot luck...and keep it clean. I'm unsure how to truly turn it into a "community garden" as I think it is really tied to the church somehow....but I'm sure there would be a way in the future to keep it a garden as long as it is cared for and have it then deeded to the local community. I just wanted to see how many would be interested to help and what weekend might work best for everyone. :)

looking for some moving boxes

if anyone has moving boxes that they'd like to pass along, i'd be happy to pick up. located in Logan Square, so surrounding areas are preferable. thanks!

  • Loulu Me

Check Craigslist for the boxes closest to you. People are ALWAYS giving them away on that site.

  • I noticed that my neighbor put a bunch of moving boxes out in the alley this morning. In the alley just East of Fairfield and South or LeMoyne. I can hold them in my garage for you if they're still there this evening.

  • Thanks, Kevin! Let me know and I'll swing by.

Fire Department hiring

My husband and I just went to lunch at Van Phat and a Chicago Fireman was handing out brochures. They are looking to hire firefighters. The test dates are December 13th and 14th, and the deadline for sign up is September 16th
He said they give the test every ten years. The website is: www.cityofchicago.org/fire application.

  • Giving the test every ten years is ridiculous. Even if they don't think they need to give the test more often because they have armloads of applicants, the test should be given every year at least. It's organizational nepotism, just a slightly more subtle version than Chicago has been infamous for.

I have had Comcast for both...not good internet would go down and the tech support was horrible! AT&T Internet has been good except they charged me a lot to fix a small issue with my apartments phone line. I have DirecTv mid-range package which has worked for me and my family (wife amd two toddler daughters). They provide equipment and usually give you free NFL Sunday Ticket free for first year(if you are football fan might be a draw). Only complaints are service going out with really bad weather (maybe lasts for 5is mins), canceling Sunday Ticket is a hassle (have to wait until the start of the next year's season, like Aug., before you can do so) and the occasional sales calls (every 6-8 weeks). But theydo give a lot of free previews for extra channels so that is a nice bonus! Hope thay helps and welcome tothe neighborhood!

  • We got Uverse the moment it became available in LS several years ago (not kidding, we were the third install). No problems so far.

Monument concert / events

Hello,

Does anyone know of a calendar that has the square (centennial monument) concert / gathering events? I walked by yesterday afternoon and there was a dj / dance hapening but I didnt stop as I was running late for a movie. I also missed a concert of a band I like there a few weeks ago, as I didnt see anything about it till the day after it happened. Does anyone have any more info on these / a calendar / etc

Thanks

  • I vaguely remember someone asking something similar this summer and someone else responded with a post that the woman who organized the events moved so now it's a bit ad hoc. I didn't even see stuff listed on the LS Chamber of Commerce calendar.

They want to try to get you to change your electric carrier I think and while you might get a good rate for that day, it will fluctuate. I'm a CPS Teacher and once, the young man was a former student of mine. He wasn't able to communicate very well what he was doing or why. The company seems to simply get young individuals to try to persuade families to change their carriers, yet they're not very well educated on the whole process. It's not safe anyway though for them (or us) to have people going door to door-time to update their practices!

  • Where these people from Green Mountain Energy by any chance? These guys have been in my neighborhood recently asking to see people's electric bills

Carmenza’s Day Care opening a second location in Logan Square — right behind Haas Park

Parents always seem to be looking for good daycare options, and Carmenza’s Day Care is *terrific*. Their new second location is great, as it’s right behind Haas Park — on the 2400 block of Washtenaw. I don’t want to post their phone number in a public forum, but feel free to message me if you want their contact info.

  • I can also vouch for Carmenza's if you need a reference. My daughter is on her last week there (been there since 3 months old) and now my 3 month old son goes there as well. Bittersweet!

Barber shop recommendation in Logan Square

I need to get my ears lowered. I'm just back to Logan Square after a 5-year absence, and need a new barber.

I'm looking for a spot with walk-ins and not more than $20 pre-tip. Willing to wait for a chair in exchange for attention to detail.

Where do you go?

  • Kevin_M Logan Square resident since 2007

Joe's on Fullerton is consistently voted best barber shop in the entire city (according to the Reader). The runner up for two years running is Pete's on Elston. I go back and forth to both. You will get a great haircut at either one, but sometimes the wait gets ridiculous - especially at Pete's. But Pete is a good guy - he offers you a Hamm's on the house, and will even call you when you're on deck if you choose to run some errands before they get to you.

  • Paul Smith EveryBlock co-founder. Logan Square resident.

I wound up going to Yohel's on Fullerton & Mozart, got a solid trim, didn't wait long, $15 + tip.

Vitame v Logan Square!

Lucie Kutrova, Vy ste z Ceskej Republiky? Mam Cechov velmi rada, a vitam! Srdecny pozdrav ode mna (Maz).

  • We've held a couple of Chicago Beer Society tasting dinners as Klas. Its an interesting place, and easy to get to on public transportation, you just ride the Pink Line to the end and walk a couple blocks west.

I'd love to hear you play! I took accordion lessons for a few years in my childhood, and am trying to re-learn this somewhat difficult instrument in my retirement.

  • Maz ethnic/cabaret accordionist, bungalow owner

Thanks Brad! I am planning to play from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, but it's best to check with the restaurant to confirm. Their number is 708.652.0795. They usually get my schedule a couple weeks in advance. However, as I mentioned above, Oktoberfest will be starting soon and I'll be busy playing in a German band. Then I'll be back at Klas in November.

Trying to find a cleaning person, not a service

I've had some very bad experiences with services - mostly because of inconsistency. One week it is perfect with one person, the next barely worth paying for when a different person is sent. I'd like to find one person - not a service - who can come every other week. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

  • PetParent Founder of Pets Are Like Family

I pay mine $75 per visit. She is there for 3 hours and just cleans the living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. I do the rest myself. We usually work in tandem. She only comes about once every other month, when I'm going to have company.

  • Nora Doherty Bucktown mom & real estate tax attorney

A lot of the best cleaning ladies went back to Poland a few years ago. I still have one, though. She has been with me for 9 years and her name is Grace. She hates dirt. Let me know if you want her number. I pay her $120 for a duplex in Bucktown. It's about $20 per hour. She mostly just washes the sheets.

Thank You Ald. Colon for Pawn Shop Selling Stolen Goods

As you face your DUI hearing today, I want to extend my insincere thanks for pushing the EZ Pawn shop on Fullerton on the community over the vocal objections of community members. One of the objections was that thieves would be able to sell stolen goods, and that's just what is happening.

They stole my roommates...

Sunroof. This is a new one; I've never heard of this happening. It happened during the early hours on Sunday. If anyone has any insight as to why someone would steal a sunroof I like to know.

Anyone know what happened at the BP station on Fullerton and California

It was a bit weird, there was a Fire Marshal SUV and a Police SUV, some older people sitting down, and then what appeared to be a family gathering on the side but they didn't look distressed. It seemed like nothing bad happened but I couldn't tell.

  • The lights on the Police SUV were flashing too.

  • I heard it when it happened. Just a strange THUNK kind of sound. From what I can gather, a left turn happened when a right should have and the lady that was driving hit the BP instead of California avenue.
Her son had to pick her up.

  • I walked by right after the incident happened -- it seemed like someone had driven into the gas station.

Nothing was stolen, but then again I didn't have anything in my car. So I guess I will be extra careful to not have anything visible in the future.

Stay safe out there, neighbors. As a side note, Aaron's Auto Glass saved the day by replacing my window in about an hour on a Sunday morning, so I highly recommend them.

Comcast down. Again.

Need I say more?

Almost 3 hours and counting... Of course their website and automated phone system still says everything is fine even though all of my neighbors are out as well.

Kedzie/Bloomingdale area. Any other areas affected?

  • For what it's worth, when I lived near Cortland + California our Comcast service was spotty as f*ck, often going out for hours at a time. One technician that came out said that someone had disconnected our hookup outdoors, and another technician said that service in our area was just "bad." We've since moved to the opposite side of Armitage, and our service has never been better.

  • I've been having the same issue - the internet would go out for a few hours at a time several times a week. I finally called and they said the modem (supplied by Comcast) was old and outdated and not able to connect as strongly anymore. Might be worth asking about - they installed a new one and its been fine since.
