Does City still filling potholes ?

I'm wondering if s\City doing anything about potholes, I'm not asking about side streets, Western or Armitage (between Western and Damen) looks terrible ? On Western same huge potholes since winter.

  • Saw them filling near Armitage and Humboldt yesterday; the good news is they were filling them-the bad news is that they were blocking traffic at a busy intersection and giving dirty looks to all the drivers.
Do web reports and get a number with it.

  • hellopatrick So Great To See You! owner

I hope they are. There is a large area of craters on Fullerton, west-bound as you are approaching the on-ramp for 90/94. Traffic piles up, because everybody has to slow down so much just to keep from damaging their cars. It makes rush hour traffic dangerous as people keep swerving and blocking both lanes to avoid the mess.

  • Chandler Logan Square Resident

If I remember correctly , I filled out a request form on the City of Chicago's website . They recently filled potholes on our entire street and intersections . I think you can also call 311 or a similar pothole hotline . I'll try to research and post some links a bit later .

Coach house is legal?

Is it legal to build a coach house on top of your garage, and use it for rental income? Do you know where to find the City of Chicago laws pertaining to this type of structure? We see several of them in the neighborhood, but were not sure about attempting this ourseleves. We can definitely use the extra income!!

  • New ones were banned in 1957, the ones you still see are grandfathered in. It's too bad, coach houses are much more appealing than basement apartments.

  • AnnaWilson Anna

Yeah, I went through the hassle of talking to several contractors and went to the building permit office and was told NOPE! If a coach house exists then it's OK but we're not allowed to build a new one, even if you knock down your detached garage and replace it with a coach house. Lame.

Cozy Corner Coffee Window?

I'd read a DNA Info article a few days ago (http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140717/wicker-park/cta-blue-line-renovations-nix-coffee-shops-wicker-park-logan-stations) about the concessions area being pulled from the California station. One of the commenters said it seemed like there were a number of alternative coffee places, but the only one which makes sense for my commute - I'm coming from behind the police station - was Township, and I do not care for their coffee (or their service for said coffee, but that's another show).

I started to wonder if there were any possibility that the to-be-rehabbed Cozy Corner would offer a coffee window. While I initially doubted it would make much sense on the alley side of the business, next to the NB exit - that alley can get pretty ripe - I knew I'd go if they offered it. And then today, I saw new windows on the alley side, and some sort of indented part of the outer wall. DARE I DRREAM, NEIGHBORS? Anybody know anybody who may know if that's even a possibility?

  • I like how you're thinking. There's a window. Like that at the coffee joint next to North Community off the Damen stop. Also if not Cozy Corner something else in that area. Or maybe a mobile truck for coffee! That would be awesome too. So many possibilities, especially for first thing in the morning.

  • hellopatrick So Great To See You! owner

I take a similar route to the California stop and have wanted some options too. Sometimes I trek around the corner to Cafe Mustache if I have enough time. If I'm really early I'll go over to Gaslight. Yum.

The times I've been to Cozy Corner in the past, people are always coming in for a to-go cup of coffee. The layout was pretty tight in there, though, so I could see some people not wanting to hassle with it. Perhaps with the expanded space and new layout there will be ample opportunity to stop in for coffee, even if it's not an outside window. The new openings installed on the alley side of the addition are definitely only for natural light/trash exit unfortunately.

Loud neighbors

What's the deal with the apartment building on the corner of Harding and Cortland? They are so loud at night during the week. Between them and the neighbors on the other side of me who play mariachi music from speakers in the yard I'm really starting to dislike living on this block. I've been here for just over a year and recently resigned a lease because I really like the apartment I live in. It's a two bedroom brick two-flat with a yard and a garage for $850. You really can't beat the price but sweet Jesus these neighbors are too loud.

Doesn't anyone on my block work a 9 to 5 job?

  • Jon San Logan Square/Avondale warrior.

Caps meeting is not for a month. I've talked to several neighbors. This is a condo building with mostly rentals. The neighbor in question might own the apartment he lives in. He's been out there every night for a week on a loud bender. There's no access for the police to get in the back area. Someone would have to let them in so I'm not sure how to approach this.

  • Don't you have a condo association? It wouldn't matter if he owns the condo or not. Read the condo association rules and see if anything is stated in it. And IF you rent and not own, can you speak to the owner of your unit?

Gunshots this morning (Spaulding/Dickens area)?

Was wondering if anyone else heard gunshots early this morning? My husband and I were woken up this morning by them and could hear them from our alley for over the course of at least 15 minutes. I was so half asleep that I don't know what time it was, I just know that shortly after, the sun began to rise. Also, I know it's been mentioned many times on here, but what is the proper number to call to report something like this. Is it 911? Thanks!

Just a note: 911 is NOT exclusively for emergencies. It is for whenever you feel that an officer needs to be present. The folks at 911 can help you decide.

For some example's of when to call 911: someone looks or behaves unusual or suspicious; you see someone checking car door handles; a violation of noise ordinance (like a late night porch party); violation of parking ordinance; gun shots (or sounds like gun shots); a fight; a fire, an unusual package on bus, etc.

You would call 311 if there was a burglary AND the offender has already gone; also to report grafittii; a felled tree limb (unless blocking road - then 911) or whenever you dont need an officer present at the scene.

People get confused because 911 was ORIGINALLY rolled out as an emergency (life threatening situation) tool. That has changed but the original message was very powerful and people still feel they'll somehow get in trouble if its not "an emergency". In fact, some 911 operators incorrectly answer the line with, "what's the emergency". That is not right.

If you are ever unsure, call 911 and it is not the right number, they will direct you to an alternate number - like 311, Animal Control or your Alderman.

  • meanboss I own a circus.

I've called 911 several times recently, they say they will send an officer, and then no one shows up. What's the deal?

Tony's Spoiled Chicken

Spoiled chicken again from Tony's on Armitage. I know it can happen anywhere, but it has only ever happened to me at Tony's. So, you know, statistics. Grrrrr, poo. That's as dramatic as my rage gets about this kind of stuff. I do want to put some gentle pressure on them to step up their game.

This is the face of a dog who won't get her chicken and rice. ;)

  • I got bad chicken from there as well and I stopped going there for anything.
Could you also do a 'city report' as well?
    Thanks for posting.

  • If you have had bad chicken, then you need to return it & talk to the manager - and you need to do it asap after buying the meat. If there's a problem they can remove anything else that might be bad. Things like this happen at any grocery store; sorry it happened to you.

My daughter will be starting pre-k/preschool at St. Sylvester's next month. She's an early September birthday, so we expect she'll be in the youngest classroom (they divide by age as I understand it). I'm wondering if there are any other parents of new students at St. Sylvester's here who might like to meet up at Palmer Square for a play date one weekend before the start of the school year.
I'm also interested in hearing about experiences with the school that others would like to share. Thank you!

Likely drug deal @ Spaulding stop today

I know someone who witnessed what they think was a drug deal going down today b/t 4:15-4:30 at the spaulding exit at the logan square stop. They didn't report it because "it was over already". They saw a dark-haired, latino-looking guy, think about 5'10", receive cash from a white guy, also thin and about 5'10" at the stop, and the dark-haired guy handed him very small baggies of something the would-be witness said they didn't think was weed. The dark-haired guy then ran off to the S8's on schubert. I'm not posting which unit b/c I think EB will take this post down. PLEASE CALL POLICE when you see this stuff going down!

  • I'm not sure you guys know what "hipsters" are.....

She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

She is probably about 30 lbs, very strong but sweet. She responds to her name, and knows commands like sit and stay. She loves chicken, but what dog doesn't.

If anyone knows Jackie's owners, please respond! We have called Home Again and they have called her owners, but they did not pick up so we're not sure what's going to happen tonight. We're letting her stay with us overnight but if you know where Jackie lives we would love nothing more than to reunite her with her owners.

Her owners are an older couple and she's a strong dog who slipped their grip while on a walk. She was very happy to be home!! I'd never heard of Home Again before and it helped us figure out who owned her and they served as an intermediary to let us ensure we were actually taking her back to a safe place. Pretty cool. Happy ending all around.

Increased loitering at Armitage/California

Does anyone know the story behind the group that's been hanging out with increasing frequency at California and Armitage? In front of the bank, and sometimes behind it. Young adults. They're not waiting for the bus...and have been hanging out a lot more often.

  • I've been seeing a lot of activity in that area and was wondering the same thing. After a little research I traced it back to Healthcare Alternative Systems Inc. 1942 N California Ave.. Their website is http://www.hascares.org/. They seem to deal with everything from anger management to substance abuse.

That's not the source of the loitering. There's this group by the bank/bus stop that seems to bus in (?) just to hang out on that corner for hours and hours at a time. Turns into a bit of a party in the later hours. They're new to the neighborhood, and all I've heard is one of the girls said one day "we're out of water." And then one of the guys said "I'll go down to walgreens and steal some." So...I don't think they have the best intentions. Usually we've just had older guys from from the SRO at Armitage and California hanging out there from time to time, but they're no trouble. But these younger guys and girls are just standing and sitting there, eyeing everyone that walks by... not sure if they're dealing or what. It's 2-3 young african american men, skinny...and two chubby african american girls. All fairly young. Lots of swearing.

Large male Airedale terrier mix looking for a loving forever home.

I've been volunteering at an animal shelter nearby and fell in love with a dog but I'm not able to give him a home because of my crazy schedule and living situation.

He is 7 and really sweet natured, though probably best without other pets in the house, since he's always been the only pet. He is great with people and would make a great companion dog. He has some minor medical needs but nothing too difficult to maintain.

The only thing is that he is about 80+ lbs and probably needs an owner who can handle such a large dog. Other than that this gentle giant would make a wonderful, quiet and loyal companion.

  • What shelter is he in? Often times shelters work with certain rescues they have relationships with. You could also try reaching out to One Tail At A Time in the city- they are a great organization and will provide all supplies to anyone that can foster him!

  • He is at PAWS. Thanks for spreading the word!

Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

There may be an underlying behavior or health issue here. Dogs with separation anxiety will bark constantly when left alone. Sometimes the owner's are not even aware of this issue until told by a neighbor.

Another issue is senior dogs with dementia type issues can bark far too often. I have a 16 year old dog and in the last six months or so she has really increased her barking. She's having some doggie dementia type issues.

Just wanted to mention a couple of these possibilities as may help the conversation w/ your neighbor.

Abandoned home full of dogs?

I was walking my dogs on a new route this past Saturday morning and passed by a deserted-looking house that seemingly contained a pack of barking dogs. I know what two or three dogs sound like; this was way more than that, and it was particularly strange emanating from such a dilapidated home.

I could be mistaken; just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience on Sawyer, between McLean & Palmer.

  • I think it is or another one is 2116N. Sawyer. A friend reported 2116 to ACC and not sure if anything happened. Upped it to PETA-political comments unwelcome-they actually show up and mediate or offer to take dogs. The garage has an orange unsafe sticker.

  • Ha! 2053 N Sawyer is not under renovation, the owner just slaps on new siding & what-not to hide the holes in the building. It's very dilapidated & infested with rats. One almost ran over my foot a bit ago when I was walking by. There are dogs that live on the first floor, their owner is fantastic & they're taken care of but I do worry about everyone that lives in the place, it looks like it's about to fall apart with a good wind.

Obscure No Parking signs going up on Wrightwood

Seeing someone put up "No Parking" signs on Wrightwood for this weekend (starting today) around Avers, Hamlin. One of them stapled to a flat tree stump - pedestrians can see, but not cars. Pretty dumb considering there's a tree right next to the stump prime for posting.

  • The temporary no-parking signs around here are consistently sparse/non-existent this round was particularly bad though. Called 311, not sure who exactly to get a hold of though.

LS Babysitter Recommendations?

It's about time we ventured out for a date night and let a babysitter take care of our 1+ year-old. I'm looking for recommendations on for baby sitter. Does anyone have a sitter that they like? We're hoping to limit ourselves to no more than $12 or $13 / hour, and we're in the Fullerton / Kedzie area.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Thanks all. I've received a ton of great replies. Please do not be upset if I don't respond to every message I've received, as we only need one sitter for now. :-)

Hi, I've been a nanny for years and babysit often on weekends. Parents tell me all the time how important it is to have a list of back-up babysitters. I'm on a list for many families and while I don't see them all regularly, I surely have gotten last second panic calls to see if I'm available that afternoon/night after another sitter got sick or had to cancel. My advice, meet with as many people as you can and find several you trust to care for your child. You never know when you'll need a back-up sitter!

Spray painted sidewalks?

Anyone know what "improvements" are planned for the north side of Wrightwood? Sidewalks and street marked up with spray paint from Avers to at least Kimball.

  • They are installing 4,209 feet of 8" watermain. The old pipe dates back to 1896. All questions and comments should be directed to Tom LaPorte at 312-742-1029.
