Dvorak in the News

Please find below links to three articles regarding AUSL turnarounds that highlight or mention Dvorak. Using Ms. Campbell's numbers from two of the articles: Multiply the $412 AUSL per pupil premium times 17,000 students times five years per school, and you get $35.7 million. Then add the $300,000 management fee times 29 schools, and you get $8.7 million (even though their contract is $10 million from last year). Add the two and you get $44.4 million over and above the...

Add the two and you get $44.4 million over and above the $4,140 average per pupil cost per student. Taxpayers are paying a $44.4 million premium for these schools for no other reason than they're AUSL schools, while neighborhood schools are starving. Add the base per pupil cost of $70.4 million per year ($351.9 million over 5 years), and you get $466.7 million cost to operate 29 schools over 5 years. This says nothing of those contracts that have been renewed; the new schools they will acquire this year and in the future; or the capital expenditures that go into the buildings. Last year's acquisitions alone got over $11 million in capital improvements when schools closed. I shudder to think how much taxpayers have already spent on AUSL.

Dvorak is Becoming a School of Last Resort, Thanks to CPS Policies

Just heard that over the past couple weeks Dvorak got about 12 students who were kicked out of local charter schools--right before the testing period. The charter schools kicked them out and told them they had to go to the neighborhood school Save Dvorak - Turn Up NOT Turnaround is one of very few neighborhood schools left in North Lawndale. CPS has made our neighborhood public schools the schools of last resort, rather than schools of choice. Then, they blame the schools for "failing". SMH

Come Support Dvorak at the Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education will meet on April 23, 2014, at CPS Headquarters, 125 South Clark Street at 10:30 a.m. Among other items to be discussed will be the fate of 3 schools recommended for an AUSL turnaround, including the Dvorak Math Science Technology Academy. The LSC voted unanimously to reject the turnaround plan, which would call for firing the entire staff. Instead, they propose to work with CPS and consultants to improve the school through a transformation process. Please come out to support the school. Buses leave at 8:30 a.m. (I'm not posting this as an event so it shows in the Lawndale section)

  • Daniel - North Lawndale - 2006 MBA - DePaul - Informations Systems

I will not be in town Valerie however, I will write in support of the community interests to the mayor's office and to the commissioner. Good luck and thank you for being a good advocate of the North lawndale community

(Chicago) Angela Gordon, Dvorak Math Science Technology Academy's LSC President, today expressed appreciation for an "outpouring of support" from elected officials representing the North Lawndale community, where the school is located. The school, along with McNair and Gresham, has been recommended for an AUSL turnaround by Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett. The Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the proposed reconstitution of the schools during tomorrow's board meeting. The Dvorak LSC voted unanimously to reject the turnaround, and has proposed an alternative plan of improvement using the transformation model. The Dvorak LSC stands in solidarity with McNair and Gresham in their turnaround fights.

"We are very pleased with the level of support shown by every elected official representing the North Lawndale community", Ms. Gordon said. "They have attended public meetings, given testimony, written letters of support, provided buses, attended rallies and workshops for our parents. The icing on the cake would be to have all of them attend tomorrow's board meeting and testify on our behalf." The timing of the meeting works very well, as Springfield legislators are not in session this week.

The North Lawndale community is represented by Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th Congressional District); State Senator Patricia Van Pelt (5th District); State Representative Arthur Turner (9th District); Cook County Commissioner Robert Steele (2nd District) and Alderman Michael D. Chandler (24th Ward).

Housing Needed

As you may know, Chicago Urban Art Retreat Cente has a Women's Residence on our 2nd floor. We offer safe comfortable furnished housing for individual women. We are full and now need to find alternatives for women who inquire.
Does anyone know of a rental opportunity for a single woman who needs to leave her husband's house? just got laid off from the bakery. Works for a Temp agency with lots of experience in bakery work. She is hopeful she can get another situation soon.
If you have a small inexpensive rental or know of one for this mature woman, please contact Urban Art Retreat and we will let this woman know about the possibility. Thanks a lot. Dianna@urbanartretreat.com
