The City Club of Chicago hosted a panel discussion on school closings in Chicago on October 23, 2014. The panel included Tom Tyrell, Chief Operating Officer of Chicago Public Schools; Carlos Azcoitia, a member of the Chicago Board of Education; Andrea Zopp, a member of the Chicago Board of Education; Carol Caref, PhD, Research Director for the Chicago Teachers Union and myself. I spoke from my experiences as the co-founder of the Lawndale Alliance. My speaking points are outlined below.

We have found the CPS bureaucracy to be unwilling to work with the community. A broad base of North Lawndale stakeholders, including the CAC and elected officials put together an alternative plan for school closures that included plans for school improvement and a comprehensive array of community resources to provide support. We sent the plan to CPS and they ignored it. We invited them to a press conference to review the plan and they refused to come out. After schools were closed we sent emails asking for assistance in understanding the budget, and never got an answer. They refused to answer a FOIA request for information regarding the impact of school closures on budgets and programs. We invited them to participate in town hall meetings and they refused.

Should Pastors Get Involved in Politics?

Sun-Times columnist Mary Mitchell wrote a provocative column, "Preachers Belong in the Pulpit, Not in Politics", (http://politics.suntimes.com/article/springfield/preachers-belong-pulpit-not-politics/mon-10272014-801pm) and got me to really thinking. I believe that ministers should be engaged in the civic activities of communities, educating their congregations about issues and providing a forum through which ideas may be shared. Churches should be relevant to their congregations and local communities without compromising their roles in being the "salt of the earth", so to speak.

To Flee, or Not to Flee

Consideration for the quality of housing, transportation, recreation, education, affordability, security and more go into selecting a place to live and raise your family.

Security is probably the highest concern of any parent. Fear of one's environment is the demon that has always crippled our spiritual growth and peace of mind. We can always run and flee in search of that fundamental right to be free of the ugly bully who might live next door or down the street, or stands insidiously on the corner. Participating and getting involved with your neighbors and organizations is one method of giving your community what you want to receive from your community.

  • Rochelle North Lawndale Resident since 1959

Thanks for this information. I had no idea LAMP existed; I just liked it on Facebook and posted the link to all of the pages I am on. Now other people in North Lawndale will know about it as well. It is definitely a program that every neighborhood could use, and yes I will support it and add it to my resource directory.

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

God will fight our battles, but we must throw the first punch.

  • A friend recently moved from that block because she said there was an increase in gang activity. I don't mean to add any unnecessary fear but just wanted you to know. Yes there is crime everywhere. I would suggest looking on Chicago Tribune's crime map or another site to see the type of activity that happens around there.

  • Thank u,I recently been doing research and found its the highest crime rate,I acted on impulse and do to low income it was affordable but now I'm having second thoughts,I just needed to move out my in laws place.
