Hello, my name is Shamica. I desperetly need your assistance to help raise funds for needy school children who attend Johnson College Prep High School located in Englewood on the Southside of Chicago. These students are in dire need of a lot of things that I would love to give to them but I can't help them all by myself. Like the old saying goes..."It takes a village to raise a child," and I ask you to please help me raise funds for these needy children to provide for them buscards, school uniforms (and accessories), school shoes, basic hygeine products, and winter coats (and accessories).

This idea came to me over a month ago when my brother went to school and they told him that he needed school shoes that comply with the dress code. Suddenly I thought to myself, 'if my brother need some shoes, how many more school kids are in need of shoes, busfare, school uniforms, hygiene products and more, but their parents or legal gaurdians can't afford it?' Then I thought to do something about it- you know, be the SOLUTION!

Afterwards I called several Englewood high schools in Chicago, Illinois in order to ask if I could raise money for shoes, buscards, uniforms, etc. for their needy students and Johnson College Prep High School gave me the OKAY to start this fundraiser for their needy children. I am so excited and humbled for this great opportunity to help these young children but I can't do it all by myself I truly need your help! Goal is to raise enough money to help a min. of 20 students at the Johnson College Prep High School. I'm allocating at least $85.00 for buscards, $50.00 for school uniforms and accessories, $50.00 for school shoes, $50.00 for basic hygeine products, and $100.00 for a winter coat and accesories. This equals out to $335.00 per child. I am increasing this amount to $350.00 per child to make sure everyting is covered. So the amount needed to help these children is $7,000 ($350.00 x 20 needy students= $7K). GIVE @ Gofundme.com/helppoorchildren

Hello Shamika, My organization maybe able to assist with toiletries if you like .

What are the parents doing to provide for the children they produced ?
This is a bad time to ask people like me that have just received Property Tax bills, with the largest portion of my hard earned money going to the Chicago Public Schools, of which I did not attend, neither did my children.

Expecting and Accepting the Next Black History

For Black History Month: My personal story of our next Black History! Since 1998 I've been fortunate enough to work within our communities. I speak with a lot of folk from both sides of our American fence and have a pretty interesting perspective on "Us". In light of recent events, I thought I would just "put it out there".

Article on Public Housing Reunions

Hello! I write for the South Side Weekly, a newsmagazine that covers arts, politics, and culture on the South Side. I'm working on a piece about people who used to live in Chicago public housing projects and still attend reunions with their former neighbors. If you attend such reunions and would be willing to do a brief interview in the next few days about your reunions and why they're important to you, please let me know!

Englewood Votes! is a non partisan voter registration and political awareness campaign designed to increase voter turnout and educate voters in Greater Englewood.

Englewood Votes! aims to make all residents understand that voting gives our community a collective voice that will demand and work for positive changes in the neighborhood.

We have come to understand that some elected officials and political leaders pay more attention to and funnel more resources to those neighborhoods and wards with high voter turnout. We have been advised that some state lawmakers subscribe to the notion that people in Englewood don’t deserve anything because they say we don’t contribute anything to society. The campaign seeks to debunk that notion in the community, statewide and nationwide.

Englewood Votes ! always welcomes supporters, donors and neighbors to join this particular effort to educate and organize residents to create a safer and more livable environment.

LargeLots.org: Translating Open Data to Tangible Change

One city that has figured out how to translate open data into tangible, street-level change is Chicago. An example can be found in the city’s Large Lot Program and its corresponding, consumer-facing website LargeLots.org. Through the city’s program, local landowners living on the same block as city-owned vacant lots can buy a lot for $1, on the condition they don’t sell that lot for five years. The program is a win-win for Chicagoans: Lots are returned to the tax rolls and residents are ensured a direct stake in the health and safety of their neighborhoods. Here’s why it’s an open data success: Residents find the available lots on LargeLots.org, which was assembled with public records that were previously difficult to track down. The program would likely fail if not for the easy-to-use, searchable data. Likewise, without the city policy allowing vacant plots to be sold for $1, LargeLots.org would be nothing but a research tool — useful, but without the promise of clear, direct impact.
