CHA not honoring their commitments in Bronzeville?!

http://hpherald.com/2014/07/30/vanishing-promises-made-to-the-poor-of-our-ward/?utm_campaign=vanishing-promises-made-to-the-poor-of-our-ward&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss

Questions:
1. Does this model work?
2. Where have the displaced folks lived since the high rises came down?
3. For those intent on returning, isn't it better to have adequate schools, grocery stores, jobs, and community resources that will provide a higher standard of living for everyone?

  • grandma 13-year Douglas resident

The goal of the community should be to bring in more homeowners and high quality businesses in order to increase our property tax base.

  • Rick Roche bronzeville father of 4

Couple of things: Promises are not binding; things change including markets, financial realities (City needs more money which public housing generates at a much lower rate than market based development) and priorities.
Also, communities are made by people not by government policy. My feeling is that the government constructed ghettos were a colossal failure. The black middle class and working class can keep Bronzeville bronze by buying property, living here and renting to family and friends and keeping gun-toting thugs at bay.

Maracas is open

A new Latin restaurant, Maracas, recently opened in Bronzeville. People should give it a try. I hope to stop by next week.

http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/28320016-423/the-312-founder-of-boriqua-chicks-open-latin-restaurant-maracas-in-bronzeville.html

  • Tried Maracas last week. We had the empanadas (? Spelling) dinner. The flavor was good but they may have been over cooked because the crust was dark and a little dry. The price $8 included two empanadas over a bed of rice & beans with a side of plantines and mango sauce. I look forward to trying other items on the menu. Time correction, they close at 8pm on Saturdays.

  • Juan from South Loop 13 year South Loop resident

I tried Maracas today. I had the Beef Steak with Yellow Rice. The flavor was nice and the portions was good. The steak could have been a little more tender but was still very good. Look forward to trying the Beef stew on my next visit.

The City of Chicago is pleased to inform you that the application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam started July 16, 2014 and will run through September 16. This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014. In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. We have lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is our hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Attached is the job announcement, as well as the FAQ’s, which provides all of the key information about the application process and the exam. In case you’d like to cut-and-paste the link to the application website, here it is: www.cityofchicago.org/FireApplication. The website also contains links to additional information.

During the posting period, applicants can call (312) 744-4976 or email fire-application@cityofchicago.org with any questions or concerns, and they can also seek assistance in Room 100 in City Hall.

We have also modified the way candidates can apply for Veterans Preference. Applicants may apply for Veterans Preference at any time, even after the posting has closed. There is no longer a cutoff date for the submission of documents showing eligibility for Veterans Preference. However, the later the preference is applied for, the later it will be applied. Detailed instructions on how to apply for the Veterans Preference are included in the attached FAQs.

Open-Space Advocates Vow to Protect Parking Lots?

Chicago beat out Los Angeles and San Francisco as the future site of the George Lucas museum, a facility that's sure to be a worldwide tourism destination, yet it's already opposed by open-space advocates.

If this was a serene lake shore wetland, or even a beach, I could understand the desire to protect it from development. But, according to news reports, it's a couple parking lots between Soldier Field and McCormick Place.

Not sure what we'd be protecting by preventing the development of parking lots.

The Chicago Trib story is at this link:

First will come another museum then other buildings will follow, once you erode the law on this, you will get more buildings and the lakefront will be lost as it is. All the politicians care about is $$$$.

Instead of putting up a building, because it's parking, turn it back into parkland. Hey if you can remove an airport and make that into Northerly Island, why not?

There is a new community coming into Bronzeville and we don't want exploitation, we want retail, and we know how to get it. Dear Ms. Dahmani,

On behalf of The Barack Obama Foundation, I thank you for your interest in hosting the Barack Obama
    Presidential Library.

A Presidential Library is the single most visible symbol of the legacy and aspirations of the President
whose name it bears. Yet, its function is more than symbolic. A Presidential Library is a space for learning
and dialogue. It is a global destination, a community asset, and a laboratory for ideas. It is a source of
inspiration for citizenship and engagement. Above all, a Presidential Library is as complex, as joyous, and
as significant as the ideals it embodies.

The enclosed Request for Qualifications is the first step along a historic path. The document is thorough
but intentionally open-ended; its goal is to inspire, not to prescribe. Likewise, while we expect responses
to be thoughtful and detailed, we encourage creative solutions in the spirit of civic innovation that has
    marked Barack Obama’s presidency.

The Request contains specific instructions for submissions as well as background information. An
appendix details design requirements. Responses are due no later than June 16, 2014.
responses in the appropriate format should be sent to:

    Robert F. Bauer
    General Counsel
    The Barack Obama Foundation
    13th
    Street NW, Suite 600
    Washington, DC 20005

Digital versions should be uploaded to a secure FTP location and links forwarded to
info@obamapresidentialfoundation.org. For questions regarding process or content, please contact
Robbin Cohen, Acting Executive Director, at rcohen@obamapresidentialfoundation.org.

As Chairman of the Foundation, I am honored to contribute to the formation of the Barack Obama
