“There comes a time that black people will have to shake up the Democratic Party [candidates] because then, in the next election when they make us some promises, they will keep them,” Meeks said.

“I am tired of what the Democratic Party is doing to black people. Our vote is automatic. If you vote Democratic, 96 out of 96 times, they don’t have to wonder where black people are. Once the election is over, Democrats have no incentive to deliver on their campaign promises,” he added.

“This is the safest time for us to break the cycle. We can make other people come to our community and vie for our votes. We can put ourselves into the game because right now we are out of the game,” concluded Rev James Meeks.

4th Ward Alderman Will Burns, you seem to be in control of these major construction projects.

Alderman Burns, please inform your tax paying constituents who you are ultimately accountable too, how our young able bodied men and women currently living in the historic Bronzeville community can become gainfully employed in designing and building these 3 three new brides in Bronzeville?

Alderman Burns you have been duly notified that the tax paying citizens currently living in the 4th Ward will be duly frustrated, if we begin to see a bunch of white and Hispanics working on these bridge construction projects in our community under you leadership.

If you want, we will provide space at the Bronzeville Visitor Information Center to host a town hall meeting about how your constituency will be able to work on these three bridge installation projects.

4th Ward Alderman Burns, you will be held accountable on this economic empowerment infrastructure development issue!!!

I visited Sip and Savor this week. Welcome to the area. Good to have the option of going to someplace besides Starbucks for coffee. I work from home so I like to get out every now and again. I spent a few hours in your place but had to leave the tv and music were competing for attention. I do like the place though, and the guys were nice and showed great customer service.

Will burns and Rahm at jones college prep

I have never been as infuriated as I was today when alderman Fioretti was excluded from the jones festivities. Will burns had nothing to do with jones. Fioretti worked tirelessly with all parties to make Jones what it is today, now Rahm and burns have excluded him and taking credit. Their behavior is disgraceful and disrespectful. Contact them and express your sentiments.

All good observations Nicole. I know I was in the minority as I didn't want the library at the MR site, in this case I do think a university and the U of C site is appropriate, not only is it a logical (library +university) the Obama's have ties to that institution. Obama did community outreach work, however not in Bronzeville, nor did they live here either, so I don't begrudge Hyde Park if they get this development.

What I would like to see to the area, is something like they did in Rosemont close to the convention site, it's retail and entertainment. Put in a similar outlet mall, restaurants, and theater. I've always felt we need something there that would breath life into the area past 5/6 p.m, (library closing time) As it is conventioneers, go to Michigan Ave. and the loop to shop, and for theater and dining. We could be capturing this right here in our community, we would get their business and the surrounding area to shop/play here. We need something to draw other Chicagoan's into the area for them to see how great it is. Maybe then we'd get some other development going on, we have plenty of vacant lots that could use some housing. No one needs to be displaced while there are all these lots that single family or two flats can be built upon, more homeowners will stabilize the area.

Then if Gary could pull it together and revitalize their airport to connect with the metra to bring people at least as a mid-west hub, imagine flights from St. Loius, Milwaukee, and other nearby cities to have a fun weekend in Chicago to stay in one of the hotels there next to retail/entertainment and the lake. Perhaps this is a far out idea, but I think it would be a great experience.

  • GRD - I agree with your vision 100%. We have so much vacant land we could have a zoo or even horse back riding.

Tragedy @ Cullerton/Michigan

The head of the stone gargoyle statue on the 2nd Presbyterian Church fell off the church at around 11:30 AM this morning, and with grave misfortune, hit a woman in the head. I was home (live across the street) and heard her companion's screams. I have attached a picture of the church tower and you can see where the head of the right gargoyle is missing. My thoughts and prayers go out to the woman's companion, her family and friends. I hope she survives this. I am so deeply saddened by this.

  • Ruby in Bronzeville Engaged neighborhood advocate

Now the 2nd Presbyterian Church is being Inspected...

A day late...

  • They've been inspected every year and have passed. It's an unfortunate incident. I highly doubt the church wanted that to happen.

  • Silly to say the church didn't want it to happen...that could probably be a given. Also, despite an inspection by the city over a year ago, the church is still responsible to keep their structure sound. Given that they failed previous inspections, and the building is almost 113 years old, it should be relatively clear that they need to perform regular maintenance on the structure.

No matter the intent, the fault lies clearly with the church and its operational management.

No, the church only "passed" the last 2 years. It failed, at least according to the article I read yesterday, the previous 5 years. It's nonsense to think anyone wanted such a thing to happen, but in the years I have owned the loft directly across the street with the absolutely most direct view of the tower, I have never seen a full-scale inspection of the church constructed of a material more suited to the Egyptian desert than the upper Midwest. And, I certainly have never seen the cherry picker with engineers scouring the bell tower's surface like I am watching this very moment. I have video of them tapping the surface and material falling off the side. So, I am not sure what inspection you are referring to, but I have never seen occur what's going on right now. The piece of metailc facade that fell and knocked the gargoyle loose is on each corner of the bell tower. Two on the southwest corner had already fallen off. It is not like this was an unknown issue or risk.

I think the larger issue is what do we as a community and city do about buildings like the church. It was designated as a National Landmark last year, and was lauded far and wide for the prestige, but in the 18 months since that pronouncement occurred, I have not seen any of the broken windows fixed or the deteriorating exterior renovated. The most work I have seen performed is the doors were painted. I fully realize it is a private building and it is the church's responsibility to maintain it, but if we, as a society, so prize its presence that we impose legal restrictions on what can happen to it going forward, then we collectively need to contribute to its upkeep and not endanger those in and around the church.

The pedophiliacs and the mentally disheveled literally went bonkers for that part of the parade. Ahh, what a good time to be had by a dysfunctional community. Oh, I almost forgot the Pièce de résistance. The natives took it 10 when not once, but at last report, twice decided shoot up the parade. The toddlers and little ones probably didn’t expect that. But, unfortunately I did. Before leaving for the parade today, I said to myself, “someone going be some shooting today at the parade”. As a side note there was also a mob of 50 or more teenagers involved in mob activity. The report is that they were going to beat down someone. About 20 men women in blue forced them to disburse. Good old Bud Billiken Parade. Oh and the adult men smoking marijuana along the parade route with children walking by, was absolutely numbing. And the old men in front of the church drinking alcohol (unbagged even). I would like to say, that the Black men are stand role models for these children at the parade... not!!! No wonder their community is a mess... the men don't even respect the children in their community. Now that blows !!!

    Sean replies:

Yep. Tell these kids to put the guns down, better yet TAKE the guns away from them. It should be a very serious crime to carry and unlicensed gun in this city. Chicago is supposed to have strict gun control. The Chicago Crime Commission produced an excellent book in 2012 stating who, what, where in the Chicago gang world. So we do now what we did to the gangsters in the Capone era.... Run them out of town! Capone got run out of town, had to set up shop in Cicero . The only reason these brutal gangs (Chicago Crime Commission has a figure of 100,000 in Metro Chicago) are in Chicago is other towns and other countries ran their gang bangers out and moved them to Chicago.

And here is just another really obvious thing to do:

Responsible adults tell teen agers not to do negative, destructive, criminal things. When did it become the right thing to do to let teens run wild and do negative destructive things?

    Some tips I'll mention

Try to remain calm and be polite and respectful to Police, but never wave your rights, agree to searches. Never argue or fight with the police or try to tell them what they can and can not do.

    Learn these phrases:

"Officer, I do not agree to any searches"

"Officer I have nothing to say"

"Officer am I being detained or am I free to go?"

"Officer I have a right to have my attorney present"

CHA not honoring their commitments in Bronzeville?!

Questions:
1. Does this model work?
2. Where have the displaced folks lived since the high rises came down?
3. For those intent on returning, isn't it better to have adequate schools, grocery stores, jobs, and community resources that will provide a higher standard of living for everyone?

  • grandma 13-year Douglas resident

The goal of the community should be to bring in more homeowners and high quality businesses in order to increase our property tax base.

  • Rick Roche bronzeville father of 4

Couple of things: Promises are not binding; things change including markets, financial realities (City needs more money which public housing generates at a much lower rate than market based development) and priorities.
Also, communities are made by people not by government policy. My feeling is that the government constructed ghettos were a colossal failure. The black middle class and working class can keep Bronzeville bronze by buying property, living here and renting to family and friends and keeping gun-toting thugs at bay.
