Frozen pipes

We are entering the deep freeze again and the possibility of frozen water pipes. This January during the deep freeze, a 1/2 copper pipe that runs hot water to my shower froze. I tried everything to thaw it, including a hair dryer.
Then a friend of mine told me about "Electric Water Pipe Heat Cable" and it worked great. All of these years I had never heard of it. It's simple, strap the cable on the pipe & plug it...

Then a friend of mine told me about "Electric Water Pipe Heat Cable" and it worked great. All of these years I had never heard of it. It's simple, strap the cable on the pipe & plug it in. In a couple of hours, all was well. I bought mine at Home Depot & its made by Frost King. I'm sure that there are several types available on the internet. Hopefully you won't get any frozen pipes but if you do, this works.

Catalytic Converter Thieves Return

When it comes to crime, everything is about numbers & statistics, so the catalytic converter thefts must of risen dramatically. It isn't just one or two guys doing this, Cook County has thousands of thieves. It seems that there are precious metals inside catalytic converters such as platinum that makes them valuable.
Best thing to do is keep the alarm on, even if your car is parked in your driveway. These thieves operate under the cover of darkness, they always hit at night. Installing outside lights with motion detectors would be a good idea.
If you want to go that extra mile and install security cameras, Costco is selling wireless camera system for about $600. Thats a good price. If you dont like it, take it back, Costco takes back all electronic returns for 90 days, with full refund, no restocking fees like Best Buy. Just save your receipt.

  • Daniela Ortiz Great Minds

Right, you'd think the cold would stop them. Also, as for the price, we have an older vehicle, maybe 2004, 2006? Not sure.

  • These guys don't care about the weather. You have something and they want to take it. They don't care if they get caught. And how often do they caught, once in every hundred thefts? So they get away with it 99% of the time. If they get caught, they know the legal system, they get a public defender, sometimes they just blow off court & disappear for years. Other times they plead it out for probation or time considered served. Then they are back in business.

Cell phone robberies

There is a rash of cell phone robberies happening on the northwest side of Chicago. People walking to their cars or just walking down the street are robbed of their cell phone. Sometimes its a strong arm robbery, other times a weapon is displayed. Just last week, in the area of Milwaukee Ave. & Devon, a young lady was walking to her car when she was robbed of her cell phone at gunpoint.
It's important to be aware of anyone around you, especially after dark. It seems that stolen cell phones can fetch upwarda of a $100 depending on the model, so or is a sought after item by thieves. Stay alert & stay safe.

  • cbuzz lifelong resident

When you walk down the street with a cell phone to your ear or you are texting and walking, you are inviting this kind of thing to happen. Put your phone in your purse or your pocket until you get to your car.

  • Yes, you are correct but cell phone is so prevalent that people dont even think that it makes them a target. One of ten people walks around talking on the phone. The robberies are occuring at night. Now it gets dark around 5pm, so its important for people to be more alert of their surroundings. These two guys haven't been caught yet, so they will be back.

  • cbuzz lifelong resident

I understand that the cell phone is so important in people's lives but it has been all over the news for a couple of years, you'd think that people would learn. When you are on your phone, you are not alert of your surroundings. Just like you are not alert when you are driving and talking on the phone or texting. Cell phones should be looked at as a service, not an accessory.

Halloween Safety

If you are taking the kids trick-or-treating tomorrow, take some flashlights with you to remain visible. Statistically, twice as many kids are hit by cars on Halloween, more than any other day of the year. Even with reflective costumes, it is getting dark early now, so visibility is an issue. Flashlights really help.

Another issue is that Halloween is on Friday, so you have more people drinking and driving. Drivers under the influence of alcohol have increased reaction time so...

Flashlights really help.

Another issue is that Halloween is on Friday, so you have more people drinking and driving. Drivers under the influence of alcohol have increased reaction time so be extra careful crossing the streets with the kids. Especially on side streets, drivers routinely only look straight ahead as they pause at stop signs. They do not come to a full stop and look around for pedestrians. A little extra caution goes a long way.

Garage Thieves

Just recently a burglar who was stealing from garages in Elmwood Park was arrested. Even though Elmwood Park is a distance from our neighborhood, this guy was on a bicycle so he was very mobile. The proceeds from the thefts were stuffed in his pockets.
What he was doing was simply going to garage doors and checking them until he found an open one. Once inside, he would steal cash & items from the cars parked in the garage. It...

What he was doing was simply going to garage doors and checking them until he found an open one. Once inside, he would steal cash & items from the cars parked in the garage. It was real easy because people don't lock their cars once they park them in the garage. Moral of the story is that when you park in the garage, be sure to lock up the car, even if you lock the garage doors.

Guy hanging around Cumberland/Lawrence

There is a homeless man named Dale hanging around the walgreens on Cumberland/Lawrence. He was just released from prison. He punched an 80 year old man in the face at the Jewel across the street a few years ago. He was sentenced 2 years. He is armed and dangerous. Chicago has banned him by he still hangs around in Norridge. I have seen him at Walgreens, and Butera in Norridge. Stay away from him. He is bound to snap like he did in the past. This is what he looks like:

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/03/11/felon-charged-with-attacking-man-80-in-store/

  • Thank you for the info. Please let the Walgreens manager know. Last year there was a guy begging people for money, every morning, at the Jewel lot at Harlem/Foster. This guy was an alcoholic, you could smell the booze on his breath. I told the manager, they told him to leave the property. He has not come back since. The Walgreens manager has the right to ban anyone off the property.

  • joanie 20+ year Resident of Jefferson Park

Seen him today at Harlem/Higgins on the bench outside TBK around 3:15 pm.
