KaBOOM! is excited to build a new playground in Chicago in November 2014 and several more in 2015, creating extended opportunities for the balanced, active play that all children need to grow and thrive.

The funding is available to all nonprofits in and around Chicago. To apply, please visit apply.kaboom.org. Click “Sign Up” or “Apply Now” to register an account. On the registration page, select “KaBOOM! Funding Opportunities Applicants” from the drop down menu under “Category.” Once you have created an account, you can sign in and create a new submission to get started on your application! Your submission has two parts, the Profile and the KaBOOM! Funding Opportunities Application. You need to submit your Profile in order to gain access to the questions in the KaBOOM! Funding Opportunities Application. After both steps are complete, we will review your submission and will be in touch to discuss next steps.

To be considered for the November opportunity, I encourage you to submit your application by Tuesday, September 2. If you are unable to complete the application by then, please contact me to discuss extending the application deadline.

At KaBOOM!, we believe that play can transform children – from sedentary to physically active, bored to mentally active, and solitary to socially active. We hope that you will work with us to bring more play into your community.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at 202-464-6069 or neleryan@kaboom.org.

Lakeside CBA

Did anyone else go to the meeting Tuesday, 8/19? It seemed a little disorganized and not enough community input. What do you think?

  • I never hear about these meeting until someone makes a comment in this forum. Where are the dates of the meeting posted?

  • Bob G. 8300 Burnham 65+ year resident of South Chicago

I received an email from the Coalition for a Lakeside CBA . I think it's part of Alliance of the Southeast (www.asechicago.org/lakeside ). There was not a definite date announced but they mentioned either Sept 25 or 30 as possible dates for a "townhall meeting", location TBA. Subcommittees were supposed to meet in between. I will post the announcement here on EveryBlock if I get more info.

  • Thank you for your help

What can an individual who lives on a small salary do to invest and augment his income somehow? Here are some tips to follow:

1. Invest in something close to your heart

Whether it is in music or cooking, investing in a small venture will have a greater chance of surviving and even achieving reasonable success if it involves doing something close to your heart or within your experience as a person or as a worker. If you work as a waiter, why not learn as much as you can about some way of improving a recipe or a drink and come up with your own sideline you, or with a partner, can run during weekends or after work?

We hear this advice often and yet not many take it to heart or are brave enough to actually do it. Many feel it takes too much effort and money to start a business. This is not true, in general. Making a single unique jacket or fashion accessory and selling it can be the one step you need to encourage yourself to make more. Even a used item such as a broken sofa, if repaired and furbished to look attractive might bring you some income you never thought you could have from what you already have.

Oftentimes, all it takes is a lot of imagination and a dose of courage to jump right ahead on a new venture you never tried before.
