Who are the cowards in the 3rd ward election?

Im fine with campaigning against and opposition to incumbents but who is producing this anonymous literature that has been so negative and dare i say hateful against Alderman Dowell?

Is it the Patricia Horton Campaign? Whomever it is, first they produce hateful, basically racist anonymous literature and now more anonymous garbage that they don't have the gumption (for lack of a better word) to claim who it is from.

I don't want this garbage in my mailbox or the people passing it out on my property unless they identify themselves. Again, no problem with opposition, just have the decency to say who you are and let the chips fall where they may.

I believe it is illegal to place items in a mailbox that have not been delivered by UPS.
    Just a thought.

  • TM BVille 8 year resident

They obviously don't care. The first wave was crude flyers second ones were higher quality, like campaign cards but no postmarks and no entity listed saying who it was from. If you are in the are they may deliver to you also.

Article: Forever Yogurt Coming to Bronzeville's 35th Street

CHICAGO — The South Side's first Forever Yogurt is coming to Bronzeville.

The self-service frozen yogurt shop is set to open at end of February or early March near the 35th Street Green Line station at 17 W. 35th St., said franchise owner Bill Coney.

Coney, a 36-year-old Alsip resident who grew up in Englewood, said he scouted locations across the city for his shop before realizing the building between U.S. Cellular Field, Illinois Institute of Technology and the Chicago Police Department's headquarters "was the space for me."

Article: Mayoral Contenders Measured in First Debate

STREETERVILLE — The five mayoral contenders held the first of five debates Tuesday, clashing for the most part respectfully in front of the Chicago Tribune's editorial board at Tribune Tower.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel faced off with four challengers: Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd); Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (D-Chicago); business executive Willie Wilson; and perennial candidate William "Dock" Walls.

Emanuel touted his record with four years of balanced budgets without raising property, sales or gas taxes, saying, "The status quo was no longer working" when he took office four years ago.

Walls, though, said Emanuel's policies "have not been good for Chicago," later telling Emanuel directly, "You have failed miserably."

New Chicago Mayoral Race Poll

From @ILPollster: New Poll on Chicago Mayor's Race by Victory Research: Fioretti Emerges as main challenger: Mayor 36.4%-Fioretti 18.2%. Run-off looms.

  • Ray

Is it just my opinion or did Doc Walls hold his own yesterday in those debates?

  • Erica in Bronzeville 12 yrs in Bronzeville; Ready for a Brighter Day

Doc Walls has been impressive to me so far, but because he's community activist, is still riding on the coattails of Harold Washington, and has a reputation of losing over and over again, he isn't taken all that seriously. He came out on the attack early on in yesterday's debate but wound up sounding a little whiny toward the end about not getting a fair shake at responses. But if anything, he helped to keep the other candidates on their toes for a bit.

Article: During in his White House days Rahm got no endorsement from Michelle Obama

With $30 million in his campaign’s bank account but polling well shy of his needed 50% plus one to avoid a run-off, Rahm Emanuel has turned to his old boss, President Obama for a TV ad.

It will be surprising if First Lady Michelle Obama will be in it.

It is well documented that she doesn’t like The Mayor.

These key findings reinforce and deepen the conclusions of Sharkey’s 2013 book Stuck in Place, which found that over 70 percent of the African-American residents of America’s poorest and most segregated neighborhoods remain in the same disadvantaged neighborhoods as their parents and grandparents. “[S]evere neighborhood disadvantage experienced by black American families during the civil rights era has been passed on to the current generation, with little change,” he told me an interview about the work for CityLab.

Historian Ira Berlin described the historical black American experience as one often suspended “between the great migrations [and] periods of rootedness.” “Movement might be omnipresent in the African American experience between the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries,” he writes in his 2010 book The Making of African America, “but so too has been a sense of place.” But today, a defining feature of African American families is their lack of mobility.

Article: Emanuel, mayoral challengers face off for first time

In the first face-to-face meeting of the campaign, Mayor Rahm Emanuel came under attack from challengers who criticized him on neighborhood development, crime and his temperament.

But Emanuel offered a measured defense of his administration as he portrayed himself as guiding a city steadily through economic turmoil.

The exchange unfolded at a 90-minute forum before the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board, which asked the candidates questions as it weighs an endorsement ahead of the Feb. 24 city election.

Emanuel maintained the key to revitalizing neighborhoods was to leverage the “strengths and assets” of city public works improvements, from upgrades to the southern stretch of the CTA’s Red Line to special taxing district funds, to provide an impetus for private investment.

Bob Fioretti’s political career took a sharp turn in early 2012 when a gerrymandered remap of aldermanic boundaries extracted the alderman’s house from his own 2nd Ward and otherwise obliterated the ward as the city knew it.

Fioretti described the deal-making leading up to it as some of the worst he’s seen.

On City Hall’s third floor, Fioretti met with two powerful aldermen and Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Fioretti was offered a bone: Agree to the remap and they would push legislation in Springfield allowing the alderman to run for the ward seat they were drawing him out of.

In an interview with the Sun-Times, Fioretti recalled the meeting with Ald. Pat O’Connor, former Ald. Dick Mell and Emanuel.

“Oh my God. Dick would sit there and lament the situation about his son-in-law [former Gov. Rod Blagojevich]. Pat O’Connor offered me a deal that they would change the law in Springfield that I could represent the new 2nd Ward without moving,” says Fioretti from behind his desk in his law office inside the historic Monadnock building.

Fioretti’s remarks came as Emanuel on Tuesday made an address on public safety in his administration.

“The Emanuel-McCarthy leadership on crime in our city is just . . . a complete failure between the two of them,” Fioretti said at a morning event in City Hall.

“I think we have good people that we can look at in a future administration, even, in fact, in our rank-in-file. . . . I think we need a new strategy across the board.”

Asked point-blank if he would replace McCarthy, Fioretti said: “If it wasn’t clear from my answer, my answer is yes.”

In his remarks to the City Club of Chicago on Tuesday, mayoral candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia also pushed for a new direction on tackling violence in the city, stressing community policing and adding police officers on the streets. Garcia, however, fell short of calling for McCarthy’s replacement.

In June of 2013, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made a new appointment to the city’s seven-member school board to replace billionaire heiress Penny Pritzker, who’d decamped to run President Barack Obama’s Department of Commerce. The appointee, Deborah H. Quazzo, is a founder of an investment firm called GSV Advisors, a business whose goal—her cofounder has been paraphrased by Reuters as saying—is to drum up venture capital for “an education revolution in which public schools outsource to private vendors such critical tasks as teaching math, educating disabled students, even writing report cards.”

GSV Advisors has a sister firm, GSV Capital, that holds ownership stakes in education technology companies like “Knewton,” which sells software that replaces the functions of flesh-and-blood teachers. Since joining the school board, Quazzo has invested her own money in companies that sell curricular materials to public schools in 11 states on a subscription basis.

In other words, a key decision-maker for Chicago’s public schools makes money when school boards decide to sell off the functions of public schools.

She’s not alone. For over a decade now, Chicago has been the epicenter of the fashionable trend of “privatization”—the transfer of the ownership or operation of resources that belong to all of us, like schools, roads and government services, to companies that use them to turn a profit. Chicago’s privatization mania began during Mayor Richard M. Daley’s administration, which ran from 1989 to 2011. Under his successor, Rahm Emanuel, the trend has continued apace. For Rahm’s investment banker buddies, the trend has been a boon. For citizens? Not so much.

Article: Rahm’s ads are fabulous fakes

Some of the latest advertising for Rahm Emanuel’s mayoral reelection campaign is cleverly audacious, deliberately misleading — and all apparently perfectly legal.

A TV commercial that looks like Emanuel is backed by the city’s most prominent news anchor and a mailing that closely resembles the cover of Chicago magazine (right down to its logo) are among paid media pieces that have turned up in recent weeks.

Bosses of the news organizations involved have expressed concern that the ads could lead some to believe they’re supporting Emanuel’s reelection, but their lawyers tell them there’s nothing they can do about it. Federal law and FCC regulations prohibit stations from editing or refusing to broadcast candidate advertisements based on their content.

Now, he wants to do something about it.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Fioretti (2nd) tried to to out-maneuver Mayor Rahm Emanuel on the subject of ethics reform so important to capturing the independent vote — by introducing the latest in a parade of ethics ordinances.

Fioretti’s version would preclude lobbying activity during Council meetings and prohibit elected officials from lobbying Council members on behalf of their “paying clients.” The ordinance also would discharge ordinances stalled by “committee inaction” with 48 hours notice before Council meetings and require aldermen who recuse themselves from City Council votes to also step aside when it’s time to debate.

That final provision appears tailor-made for Ald. Edward Burke (14th). Burke routinely abstains from City Council votes to avoid conflicts with his private law clients. But he sometimes participates in debates on those matters when they come before the Finance Committee he chairs.

Your thoughts on an amnesty program that would help Chicagoans settle outstanding parking tickets without being on the hook to pay exorbitant late fees?

Here's the link and a bit of the content:

Mayoral challenger Bob Fioretti wants to give Chicago parking ticket scofflaws a chance to settle their debts and get off the boot-eligible list without paying exorbitant late fees.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Fioretti plans to curry favor with the scofflaw vote by proposing what he claims would be Chicago’s first parking ticket amnesty program in nearly 10 years.

Fioretti said another amnesty could match or trump the $7 million the city raked in last time around — and every little bit helps to chip away at the city’s $20 billion pension crisis.

He argued that it’s particularly well-timed because Mayor Rahm Emanuel has raised fines for an array of parking offenses and increased penalties for those who don’t pay.

That puts motorists in a bit of a trick-bag. If they don’t pay, they land on the boot list and risk having their vehicles disabled, incurring even more fines. If they do pay, they sometimes have to do it at the expense of other pending bills that carry their own penalties.
