Bronzeville Thank State Representative Mitchell for Limiting Your Transportation Options

Several weeks ago the Illinois House of Representatives voted on HB 4075. The bill was bought and paid for by the taxi and commercial auto insurance industry and would place draconian regulations on the ridesharing industry Areas such as Bronzeville, which is designated by the City of Chicago, as an underserved community by the taxi industry, has residents who regularly use ridesharing companies Uber,Lyft, and Sidecar for critical transportation needs. Although his constituents use these services State Rep Christian Mitchell supported the bill that would limit ridesharing in Chicago while protecting the taxi industry. .

$1 extra per ride for Uber X. Not really a big deal to make sure the drivers are properly trained and insured, is it? How does this limit Uber's ability to operate? I have no problem paying an extra buck but if they are prevented from operating in Bville, I'm gonna riot! They have been a god send to get to the airport and other places in the city. The scary, racist cabbies apparently don't feel the need to respond to our business. Once again, Emannuel and the kangaroo court show their racist colors by the policy they promote. I have no idea why so many Black voters support this guy?! Every policy proposal he makes directly or indirectly gives African American neighborhoods the shaft! This fear mongering under the guise of consumer protection is about as disingenuous as you can get. In my experience traveling for business to the airport for years, I'm far more terrified in a cab than I've ever been using Uber. The difference is the cabbies pay a big fat fee for their medallion to operate, Uber does not. Guess who gets the free pass legislatively?😏👎Lol. Wow!

I’m not a fan of what the city and taxi industry use to define "undeserved areas”. It makes the taxi industry look good since it covers most areas outside the look and Lincoln Park including the mayor’s house.

A simple regulation that allows both but covers the safety, insurance, background checks and a few other items.

I didn't sign up for this, until this problem gets solved how do you move forward, just like it has been said maybe they are there to discourage us or frustrate our resolve so we give up and move on. I have seen the Police move on them but they are still there, I have had several conversations with my neighbors and they are at a lost, this is a great concern because you think maybe they have some power you are unaware of that gives them license. You think to yourself am I putting myself in jeopardy by calling them out, but in normal times our families are free to live out in the open with normal neighbor activities, talking, children playing etc.,etc., but who can play in the middle of cars flying down our street 60 miles an hour, 20 to 30 young people coming to and from with who knows what activity going on. Alderman if you are listening ..............HELP

  • Marc of Bronzeville Homeowner, longtime Bronzeville resident

Ray, also convince your likeminded neighbors to hound the police commander and the alderman until they are sick of hearing from them. If they are not responsive, let us know and even though I am not on your block- we will hold them accountable.

  • Upside Down Upside/Down & Frustrated

Curious why one is unable to phone the alderman's office "private" .Her office does not accept anon calls? How on earth does this encourage working together? Also, has anyone driven down 35th, 43rd, 47th or 51st this weekend? It looks horrible with people every where loitering. Isn't there a loitering law?

Gun Violence explodes across City

Over 30 people shot in a weekend and we are only in April, maybe I am naïve in thinking this, but could Drugs be the problem here. The only other time we had this level of violence was during prohibition. My thinking is when the alcohol ban was lifted the violence problem went away. I see open air drug dealing going on uninterrupted 24/7 like it's a 7/11 and not even an ounce of fear on these drug dealers faces of being arrested, well now the shooting involves children, women, at all times of day and night, and we have no answers. Well something has gotta give or this will be the end of us all.

  • Bronzeville Curmudgeon Director, Bronzeville Visitor Information Center

Hey Ray, 13 shot already this weekend. Hopefully our young people will not continue to murder each other tomorrow, which will be even warmer than today, but hopefully Easter Sunday will be a deterrent to more killings and some form of Resurrection in 2014.

Hey Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Governor Pat Quinn you'd better stop taking the voters in African American community of Chicago for granted!!!

Other than our inner city Southside neighborhoods being re gentrified by the University of Chicago, what is the return on investment for the African American communities in Chicago?

Lu Palmer's House

It's really sad what has happened to Lu's house over on King Drive, this is another sore eye for Bronzeville, Even the property where CBUC used to have meetings looks condemned. A beautiful red-brick structure has fallen on to hard times. Even the nearby Bronzeville Bed and Breakfast closed, never to return as of yet. Preservation needs to be taken more serious on the south side, cause when it's gone, it's gone! (See Picture).

There is a comment policy about being respectful. Efforts to do good are sabotaged by disrespect, anger, bitterness and resentment. How will we accomplish anything without respect? Benjamin thank you for desire to make something positive.
My not for profit has a Crowd Rise for an urban agriculture project we are working on. Perhaps you and other organizations might want to start a fundraiser to save a Bronzeville treasure.

    Hey TM BVille,

You exhibit your ignorance about the recent history of Bronzeville, by expressing the same "top down" anti social, class stratification elitism that has enable systematic destruction of landmark buildings and the authentic culture of Bronzeville, as an internationally significant heritage tourism destination.

I stand on my previous comments on this thread, as the current reality in Bronzeville!

Dummy, how many Bronzeville historic structures have you saved or redeveloped.

One impact of crime on all communities is the procedure of putting nonviolent offenders, like young people with less than 30 grams of pot in jail. Hold this up to the light and compare it to letting banks get off even when they admit to money laundering for major drug cartels.

Thanks for the book recommendation JRMD! I recently saw Matt give an interview on a show on this very topic and you are correct, the hypocrisy is staggering and quite eye opening. Will definitely adding this to my library.

Please feel free to add your thoughts at my blog site also. We have to remind our community of the hypocrisy and disrespect.
I am planning a blog in response to James Meeks suggesting that we vote for a Republican Governor because the Democratic one has done nothing for us. LOL

Black Metropolis Convention & Tourism Council a long standing 501c3 not-for-profit Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for the historic Bronzeville community, in good standing with the State of Illinois, was not contacted by your office to participate in the city of Chicago's development of the RFP for 43rd & Calumet in Bronzeville.

As you know historically, from your past history as executive director of the Mid South Planning & Development Commission, that collaboratively we created the Muddy Waters Blues District and festival on the 43rd street commercial business district years ago and it was not sustained.

The east west boundaries are from Stewart Avenue on the west and the lakefront on the east. Several commercial redevelopment nodes have emerged on 43rd Street in the past decade, including a node at St Laurence Avenue and another anchored by Nroman's Bistro on 43rd & Ellis Avenue, where we celebrated the Brown Derby Jazz Revue on this past Thursday evening, as components of the Visit Bronzeville FAM Tour associated with IPW International Tourism conference in Chicago on April 5-9, 2014.

Don't forget lady D' antiques and the other urban entrepreneurs struggling to sustain thier businesses in the landmark retial commercial building between located Michigan Avenue and Wabash Avenue on 43rd Street around the coroner from rev Cobbs church that has been palced on the national register of historic palces because of its art deco exterior and not the legacy of Rev Cobb's assocation to the policy racket barons.

The vision of 43rd Street's emergence as a heritage tourism entertainment zone should not be limited or truncated by Aldermanic control or focus simply on the corner of 43rd & Calumet, but should also be inclusive of the entire 43rd Street commercial business district development within the Black Metropolis National Heritage Area www.cmap.illinois.gov/bmnhac

As a resident I want to be able to support local businesses, however this last week made me wonder if our local business owners just don't care or take our business for granted. We went to one establishment one night for dinner, the place was somewhat dirty, the front door smeared with hand prints. I always look at a front door as your initial impression and it should be kept clean. So just by chance, we happened to return two nights later, only to see the same smears on the glass. So in two days, no one thought to clean the door? So we left, I didn't want to think about the kitchen. Ironically, we went to a nearby place, it too was dirty, and the service was surly.

These weren't fast food establishments either, not that that's an excuse for dirt when/where dealing with food service. Such a shame, I want to tell friends to come out to BV, but can't, how can I when I question returning to these spots myself.

Dear Erica in Bronzeville and those self serving, arrogant, plutocratic "top down" black politicians in Chicago!

If Bronzeville elected officials were progressive in advocating for city and state resources from heritage tourism development in under served predominantly African American neighborhoods in Chicago, they would have incorporated an subsidy initiative with the state legislation on the McCormick Place expansion of a new hotel and the DePaul Basketball stadium, that would have provided some financial resources for the development of Bronzevlle as a international heritage tourism destination.

Both the Mayor and the Governor could have also sponsored set asides in the legislation that could have benefited heritage tourism development in African American neighborhoods.

Since our governor, mayor and incumbent black democratic elected officials continue to take African American voters in Chicago for granted, the reality of less than 20% voter turn out in the democratic primary election, bodes well for the republicans in the general election come November 2014!
