Beans and bagels chef

I saw a post on the Beans and bagels page that their pastry chef was injured in an attack on Rockwell but no details were given - anyone know what happened?

  • Lincoln Square Lauren craft & cat enthusiast

I think Beans & Bagels has two locations -- one at the Montrose brownline stop and one over on Rockwell (where the pastry chef is based out of). Is it possible that someone robbed and/or attacked the chef while he/she was working at the Rockwell location? Pure speculation.

  • KCW

Not sure their fb post just said he was attacked by 4 men on Rockwell - I'm assuming it was going to or coming from work. Thank goodness he is going to be ok.

Helicopter Circling at Damen/Foster

This is the third time in the last six days that I've observed this (I know some other people on EB have seen this, as well). Though the last two times it was around 8 p.m. Tonight, it did it around 8 p.m., and now at 10:30, it's been going for at least 10-15 minutes. Anyone have an idea of what this is?

  • Bill Near Rockwell L

I read that various aldermen have put pressure on the police to do SOMETHING to reduce crime, Joe Moore in Rogers Park has specifically requested police helicopter patrols, so maybe we will be seeing more CPD Air these days. Police air squads can be effective, eye in the sky and all that.

Better than more gang infiltration in your neighborhood? If the Rogers Park patrols are making it harder for them to operate just north of you... Better than gunfire!

It was a police helicopter looking for suspects in an armed robbery. I know this is already confirmed above so the issue now is WHY did 311 tell me it was a Chicago Fire filming? That is a MAJOR safety issue. It's possible Chicago Fire WAS filming yesterday at some point, somewhere.. but I was asking if my neighborhood was safe and was mislead.

The PD is doing helicopter patrols over Rogers Park nightly, in an attempt to reduce the gang violence. After the arson of a gang members vehicle, and then a street murder a few days later, there is fear of an escalating gang war. So, possibly it was quicker and more advantageous to divert a copter to the park to flush out the perpetrator? Good move, if so!

Police helicopter - there is NO filming going on

It is a police helicopter searching for someone. They are NOT filming. 45 minutes ago I spoke to a 311 operator who mistakenly said they were filming. Then 1/2 hour ago I spoke to an officer at the police station on Lincoln who said they called the chopper from downtown to search for two suspects who "jumped" someone in the park. I was just told 5 minutes ago they did not find who they were looking for.

The policeman also told me the park has gang activity at night

Winnemac blocked off/helicopters

Anyone know what's happening by Winnemac park right now? The park is blocked off on Hoyne by a bunch of police officers and there's helicopters circling the area.

  • I'm listening to the scanner link jbowman sent--which shows you what an exciting Friday night I've got going on--sounds like they've got a whole lot of nothing.

I wrote to Pawer's office last night to get some info. The helicopters started a bit later than the rest of the week. I admit they make me nervous as I assume it's a TV news station covering a fire or something icky.

Apartment burglary

My friend's second-floor apartment near Damen/Lawrence unfortunately was burglarized during the day yesterday. Her laptop and jewelry were stolen, as well as a backpack to haul the stuff in, apparently. Thankfully her cute little cats were unharmed. The doors were bolted when she came home and no windows were broken, so they're not sure yet how the thief got in but they think he must have had a key somehow, possibly from/as a previous tenant.

That uncomfortable theory might raise questions of security and safety for all us renters out there. It also underscores the importance of having renter's insurance.

I hope karma bites that guy right in the a**.

  • b in edgewater/andersonville interested resident and business owner

I wanted to address the issue of always making sure you have renters insurance. People tend to think the builidng they live in is totally secure and they " don't really own anything". Break ins are traumatic and the last thing you want to deal with is worrying about who pays for what. Get renters insurance. Barbara Janusek State Farm agency on Broadway and Bryn Mawr will get you coverage for less than $12.00 a month.

  • Agree with b, renters insurance also covers your personal property in your car if you have a break in. Your car insurance doesn't.

Quick note for you mom's and dad's, music lovers and just good ol' fashion neighbors;

Sad about summer coming to an end and all the fun (not too mention outdoor activities) that come with it and was wondering if anyone would be interested in starting some sort of discussion around a library themed evening event?

I realize beer will likely not be sold at the library (d@mn) but my Fall might be a lot cooler if I could slide into Winter knowing that there would be something community oriented to take my daughter too during the Winter (outside of Wiggle Worms, Swim Class, etc.).

1.) Has this ever been discussed? (Hosting something at the Library - )
2.) Who else feels the same?

Personally, the thought of not having one or two nights a week to "plan" for stuff in the face of bitter cold and dark skies would go a long way towards breaking "Chiberia".

(I apologize in advance if that's too many cold winter references, but hey, it's coming.)

Best!

Anyone have a garage space for rent?

I just moved up to Lincoln Square, but my apartment only has street parking and my car is a plug-in hybrid (Chevy Volt) that I would like to be able to plug in at night. I would of course be willing to pay for the extra electricity, though it doesn't use much. There wasn't any noticeable increase in the electric bill at my last place.

Let me know!

  • I've been watching parking for the area on Craigslist and parkingspot.com for a while and I've seen quite a few garage spots come up (out of my price range, but sounds worth it for you). Also I am jealous of your Volt :)

Comcast internet outage Lincoln Square...?

My internet has been balled up since last night around 3 AM, my line speed is all over the place, jumping from 0.1 MB/sec to the 50 MB/sec that I pay for and back again second-by-second. DNS seems FUBAR.The DOCSIS config file bound to my cable modem looks wrong, which has my cable modem saying "IPV6 ONLY" which doesn't really seem right either....

Comcast is acknowledging a problem on their Customer Account - Support page, I wonder how widespread it is.

Anyone else out there having Comcast Internet issues?

Comcast anyone ?

How widespread is this COMCAST internet issue today ?

We've been out (or barely running) all day over here near Lawrence & Rockwell.

Comcast first said it had been going on since last night and would be on again a 2:30 pm ... and then that time came and went.

How can I post this ? Very carefully - sneaking through a rare ultra-slow service point evidently.

(Comcast should seriously look into improving the way they handle their customers)

Part of me feels that things have changed in the last 2-3 years.

The thing I always heard about RCN was that they had anti-competitive habits, like signing deals with landlords where once they signed up one customer in the building, they had to stop providing competing services or something. Not sure how true that was, or if it's still true.

Recently I received a letter from a debt collector on behalf of the Chicago Tribune. The company claimed that I owed $32.25 and that I needed to pay them immediately--or I could call them to plead my case.

Naturally, I called them. They refused to produce evidence of the debt or explain where it came from --other than to direct me to Chicago Tribune.

So I called Chicago Tribune. They claimed that I had signed up for a Tribune trial from a door-to-door salesperson/kid asking for a donation for their education. They said that I had been receiving newspapers for months (I hadn't) and they had been sending me bills.

I have no idea what they were talking about. Neither does my wife. We'd never seen a door-to-door Tribune salesperson, much less signed up for a subscription. If the Trib had sent any bills, we probably assumed it was unsolicited junk mail.

The customer service rep eventually credited the account, but not before admitting that there were others like me calling in about their own mystery bills.

My suspicion is that this door-to-door "salesperson" put us on the list without consulting us. I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Though I suspect this was not the Trib's fault, I am not at all a fan of the way they do business in regards to subscriptions. Twice in my life I have signed up for subscription deals through salespeople at my door or on the street, and twice have indicated I want it to be non renewing, and have been assured it won't renew. (I only use it for coupons, and I have a bad habit of letting them pile up rather than using them, which then reminds me why I don't subscribe in the first place!) And both times, they have renewed, won't stop delivering the paper, they keep sending me bills, when I call I have to call multiple numbers to get it taken care of. Both times I've been sent to collections over it too, and have had to call to resolve it multiple times. It's a huge time waster and it makes me really angry.

The owner acted like this has happened more than once and our dog had a swollen mouth for a few days and now has scarring / scabbing. We were so upset that we tried to get away and didn't get the person's name/number. We had never seen them on our street/neighborhood before but if anyone seems them please be careful. The guy did say afterword that the dog was not friendly. We are not sure why he was even walking the dog in public. If you see them or know who they are we would love to get their information for our dog's sake.

Looking for Movers - insured/ licensed

We're looking for movers in a couple weeks, and were wondering what companies you'd recommend. I called 2 Guys & a truck, and their price quote was too high (for moving a very small apartment). What are your thoughts? Some of the places that have good reviews on Yelp don't have web sites or very findable sites, so it's hard to find out more about the company. I do plan to make calls, but would love to have neighbor input.

  • These guys were great: http://www.neuhausandsons.com/

Also, unlike others that I contacted, they had $1mil in insurance on our move.

  • We used OnTime Movers, who seemed to change their name to In and Out. First time, had a great experience. The second time took forever and it cost us a pretty penny. The third crew member was apparently new and being trained. They wrapped everything with tons of blankets and tape (things that did not need it), which they charged us for. Would not recommend them again.
