NE corner Wolcott/Sunnyside - please trim plants, too tall!

I have witnessed and been a part of multiple near accidents at this intersection, just in the last week. If you are responsible for the (admittedly beautiful) plantings at the NE corner parkway of Wolcott and Sunnyside, can you please trim them down? In a low car (not an SUV) it's really difficult to see cars traveling in the opposite direction. It's dangerous. And the plants just keep getting taller.

If whoever planted those doesn't trim them, I'll put in a request for the city to do it. It's a dangerous situation. Thanks for your attention to this, whoever you are.

Body Shop Reco + Rat Advice

I know it's an odd title but I am in need of a recommendation for an affordable, honest, and excellent body shop in the area because the rats in our alley chewed 3 holes in our car.

I've contacted the city about the rat problem but knowing how long it takes things to happen around here if anyone has suggestions for other measures I should take in the meantime I welcome the advice.

guy with mask at health club

I keep seeing this guy wearing some sort of gas mask while working out at the new(er) LA Fitness near Ravenswood Station. Anyone know what gives? I'd ask him myself, but I'm afraid he'll get ticked off and hit me. He's kinda scarey looking to begin with.
It's really freaking me out.

I just got back from a vacation in the Colorado Rockies. We went up to almost 13k feet. It was such a ridiculous feat hiking up there. I read up on acclimation last week. Being at a higher elevation increases red blood cells, so the body gets more oxygen at a quicker pace. This is super helpful for the times when the person is not elevated or in the mask, because having more oxygen PLUS extra red blood cells gives the body a major boost when working out. I started a regime last week to take advantage of my acclimatization, and it made circuit training a breeze! I had been wondering how athletes could take advantage without getting out to the mountains...

looking for a good place to take scrap metal

I recycle and collect miscellaneous scrap metal and am looking for a good dealer to take it to. Used to go to Bucktown Scrap metal which has had many different locations and relocations recently, but they had lost their lease a few months ago and I have since not heard anything about a new location. The owner was a very nice Jewish fellow, and ran a reputable business with good payout rates. Any updates or new suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Outdoor Stair Climbing Locations

Greetings
I'm looking for locations near Ravenswood to climb stairs out of doors. The local high school stadiums lock their entrances and I'd prefer to avoid hills, at least until the ground dries up. Any suggestions?
Thank you

  • I'll cheer you on Brittany. That is some hardcore stuff right there!!

  • Frank H 71 Prodigal Northcenter native, back after 10yrs away

There is also the Paulina Station secondary stairs just east of Paulina. The station is higher than most because it has to clear the Metra tracks to the west.

Farther afield, there is Mt Trashmore in James Park in Evanston between Oakton, Dodge, and McCormick. We used to run up there on our high school cross-country runs. It is probably the steepest and tallest hill around.

Yes, we enjoyed it and have been back again (easy since is so close). I don't know that I saw chicken pot pie Feihong but they have duck & waffles sandwich. I have not yet had savory food, just breakfast & baked goods. They seem to have more non-bakery options than Angel Food but fewer bakery items. I read the Yelp reviews and probably pretty fair, is fine but seems a little disorganized still (they didn't have a box the right size to fit my baked good order and it wasn't a matter of running out of it. But I have noticed some changes as they've gone along so maybe they're taking feedback into consideration.

Does your Condo association require Criminal Background Checks for renters?

Our Condo association is 10 years old and we haven't been following our rules and regulations as closely as we would like. We now want to start enforcing some of the more important rules.
Our current Rules & Regulations require that renters must be subjected to a criminal background check. I am inclined to enforce the rule but would like to see how other associations are handling this. If your building does have a criminal background check, can you please provide information about general cost and process you use?

Thanks

FYI-Our building has 25 units total.

@Jeff, yes that is the main point of the article. Key to having such a rule (credit or criminal background on prospective tenant) is for the unit owner/landlord's benefit not the Association. But the unit owner/landlord can still lease to whomever he wants, including a criminal or person with a lower credit score. If the Association tries to reject that tenant, the unit owner can sue the Board and Association. Of course, one hopes a unit owner rents to a responsbile, credit worthy tenant since the unit owner has to continue paying assessments, property taxes and mortgage on the unit.

Does anyone know what, if anything, can be done about the crosswalk signs that had been placed, but are gone now, at the crosswalks at the intersection of Washtanaw and Lawrence ave? I often have to cross Foster at Hoyne to get to Winnemac park, and I can tell you its rare for someone to stop while crossing at the crosswalk. I find the signs do help but I would never just walk across and assume someone is going to stop for you. Even if the pedestrian is within the law to cross it doesn't do you much good when you're in the hospital with a broken pelvis or worse. Also, the police have done "stings" at various intersections and have to warn or ticket most drivers.

  • Joshua Your friendly neighborhood cynic...

I gotta be honest, no matter how I came across before I usually stop when I come across one of these signs with someone standing next to it observing traffic and waiting to cross. However, when I come across a pedestrian who blindly plows into moving traffic with a defiant smirk on their face...I'm apt to hit the gas. Arrogance and stupidity aren't to be rewarded.

I see this car very frequently in this spot. Usually it is in the morning, but I also just saw it there tonight at around 6:30pm on 3/8. I happened to be walking by and saw three men get out of the car and walk to Garcia's restaurant as I was on my way to Fleet Feet. I am wondering who this person is, and why they have never been ticketed or towed. This is obviously not an emergency issue but is there somewhere to call to report this?

  • SpamAlert Spamophobic

Man, I'm glad I wasn't around when the thread began. I would have committed a big faux pas. When CTA guy said, "The three guys you saw? One was my son and the other one was my life partner of 14 years. Why do[es] Don need to be stalking me and my WHIP." I thought the WHIP was a reference to his gay partner. Wow! That would have been awkward. But, you know, SpamAlert has a very limited skill set, so the confusion might be considered understandable.

  • painhertz butterknife ninja

Hmmmm....CTA employees have "parking perks" when they're off duty? Wonder what OIG will say about that? There is no "official" policy for this. If you really want to complain about this and now that the nice person has identified himself as a CTA employee just call the Office of Inspector General and complain @866.814.1113. His license # should be on record.

Dry cleaners

Howdy neighbors, recently moved into the neighborhood and, sorry to be cliche but, does anyone know a good dry cleaner? I didn't want to bother on EB, but we've read a bunch of mixed reviews online on different places, and we've tried two already which didn't perform well, i.e. one overpriced and one lost a shirt. Again, I apologize as I'm sure this is a thread that goes around every few months...

  • I'm interested in whether anyone has experience with any green cleaners? We had a environmentally friendly place when we lived in Roscoe Village but haven't been able to fine one near here. Thanks!

Latitude changed hands

So, a coworker of mine mentioned to me that the Latitude bar/restaurant has recently changed ownership. I guess it's in the process of going through a rebranding and will be run entirely differently then in the past. My coworker knows the owners of the new establishment and has said that they have a much better food menu and will have a very good beer selection over time.

Has anyone been there in the past few weeks? I had only been there once before and service wasn't very good. I'd be excited to hear things are better with the new owners.

  • Great to know!! my friends and I haven't gone there in years because it just kept getting worse it seemed. Hopefully they will do some advertising or something, because I don't think the change is really known yet.

  • Great to know. We'll try it out.

Cars (and bikes) not stopping at stop signs in Ravenswood

I walk home from the Metra up to Foster Ave, usually on Wolcott. Seems like almost every day the cars in the area either do rolling stops, don't seem to stop at all, or take off when I'm halfway through the crosswalk. Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done?...

Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done? It doesn't seem like there is any police presence in the area, so it goes unnoticed. I don't like having to worry when I'm following the laws and being a safe pedestrian, that I'll be hit by a car or bike.

  • The new pedestrian "refuge" islands on Lawrence, complete with clear signage, are mainly ignored as well. Another great sting location if they want to hit a main road...

  • BerkeleyGirl Winnemac Park

Brian, if only there were a camera filming the northern crosswalk across Dearborn at Randolph, between McD's and Petterino's. It's insane!!! Honestly, in all my years, I've never seen anything like it. People of all ages/races/genders walking against red lights like they're not even there. Considering that I strongly believe that there are far more reckless drivers than pedestrians, I want to yell at them: You're not helping!!!

This thread is making me very frustrated that I can't make the CAPS meeting this Wednesday at Ravenswood Covenant Church.

The Last Pit Stop BBQ

Has anyone been yet? What were your experiences? Yelp seemed sort of mixed, would love to know if others have been there. I expected that they would have some bumps (everyone does when they first open), but that they should smooth out in time. I would love to see another restaurant in the neighborhood last!

  • My wife got the ribs which were fantastic and the coleslaw and sweet potato fries were great too. My brisket and mac and cheese much less so. We'd go back for the ribs though!

  • RoseRed 13 years in Chicago, 2 years in Lincoln Square

I went a couple of days after they opened and hope they will improve with time. The boyfriend and I got the pulled pork sandwiches. The pork was clumpy and extremely dry and the sauce tasted like it was out of a bottle. I had the baked beans and they absolutely came from a can. The boyfriend got the sweet potato fries and they were soggy.
The service was slow and confused.
We'll be giving it a few months and will try it again before completely giving up!

Looks like it's grand opening was yesterday...no reviews yet.

  • So things that exist: sucuk trash kabob. Pity the poor advertising firm that has to make THAT sound appealing. :-)

Yeah, I feel like maybe they should spell it "sujuk" instead, which is closer to how the manager pronounced it (it's also how it's spelled on Wikipedia). If your eyesight isn't good, it looks almost looks like Jennifer ordered "suck trash kabob".
