Looking for a short-term dogsitter

My wife and I are seeking someone to stop by our place to keep an eye on and tend to our 13-week old Morkie puppy. He's not quite used to being by himself all day, and unfortunately we need to be away.

Date: At least March 10-12, maybe a few more days on either side
Time: At least 5-6 hours/day
Where: Near Ravenswood and Wilson
Tasks: Keep an eye on him while he's in his pen; play with him; clean up after him; keep him fed; usual puppy stuff.

Just let us know a little about your background and your rates to chicodes101@gmail.com. Thanks!

Moving? Need Cardboard boxes?

Hi Neighbors.
I have great u-haul and u-line boxes broken down in various sizes, and would love to give them to someone who is planning to move in the next month. All you have to do is pick them up!

  • SBloom architect, dad and a half, 25 years north side

If you have any of the small U-Haul boxes ("Book Box": 12" x 12" x 12" or "Small Moving Box" 16-3/8" x 12-5/8" x 12-5/8" ) or the U-line equivalent, Ravenswood Elementary School Library could use them to store some Library books. My wife and I are helping the school fix up the Library.

I know I'm not the first to respond to this post, but if you would consider it, it would greatly help out the school.

I can pick them up anytime this week after Wednesday afternoon.

  • If any boxes still available, I would be interested.

Anyone know a good body shop?

Someone slid into my car, slightly cracking the bumper and busting the headlight. It's a kinda old car, so I'd like to just get the bumper secured but not fully replaced.

Anyone know a good body shop that probably wouldn't insist on completely replacing the bumper?

Channels

I know, cable is terrible... But, has anyone in the area, with Comcast, had an issue with a couple HD channels not coming in? Is it a provider or equipment issue? The lost channels seem to be growing in number by the day, first it was ones like Cooking and DIY, now its also NBC and FOX.

  • LisaMV friendly Lincoln Square neighbor

    That's helpful, thanks Everett!

  • JCVD Live in Ravenswood Gardens

I had the exact same issue, and it turned out that squirrels had eaten through the cable at the box on the pole. I've heard it's pretty common, apparently he like the insulation.

Rory Fiedler: Who's Backing Him?

Hm. So I saw that this guy filed to run against Pawar in the 47th. Is this the "Jeri's Diner Candidate" that some of the old Machine stalwarts were talking about digging up a few months ago, or just a random independent? Curious if anyone knows about his candidacy at all.

  • The Elected School Board question is on the ballot in 38 Chicago Wards. Pretty good grass roots effort! Ward-to-Ward vote is needed since only 3 questions are allowed on the city-wide ballot and city-wide was blocked by Emmanuel's allies.

Democracy is messy but the alternative has been worse so far.

  • CynicalPolitico Political Consultant, Geek, Policy-Wonk Wannabee

Ok. I was right, well, sort of. I predicted 85 to 15 for Pawar. The numbers are 83 to 17. I may be cynical but I'm a politico, and I'm right.

Jeff f, greenhorn, Robin, where are you? Ricolooola???? RICOOOOOLA!!!!

In a few weeks we'll find out who funded Fiedler's campaign and I bet we'll find a Gene Schulter. Beware 47, the race for 2012019 began last week and if you're not careful the goons will come back.

Headlight ticket

Yesterday I received a ticket from CPD for one of my headlights going out. I replaced the bulb today. Has anyone ever gotten one of these before? The language on the ticket is a little vague. Can I contest this once its fixed? Any guidance is helpful. Thanks.

  • Daniel Kelber Living the Good Life in Bowmanville

The ticket will be dismissed if you bring a receipt to court. I know because I used to prosecute traffic tickets for the City.

  • I'm sure you did, but just in case - did you read the fine print on the ticket relating to the cited charge? Some 'fixable' citations specify how to have the ticket negated provided the problem is remedied. The courts don't want dockets crowded with cases that have no need to be there; this may be one, especially since as I understand it the light wasn't already burned out.

Still Time to Vote

The polls are open until 7:00. If you haven't voted yet. Get over to your polling place and cast a ballot for Alderman Pawar.

  • MandaLeigh Here I Is.

Kathy60618 has gone silent. While I'm no longer in your ward, I am with LauraLiz as to wondering why Pawar is so terrible. You guys are crazy-fortunate to have such a decent alderman.

  • Jack Lydon 47th Ward Democratic Committeeman

It seems Kathy has gone dark. But that's okay. An alderman cannot please everyone. Kathy is entitled to her opinion; vulgar as it may be. Nevertheless, an interesting phenomenon has developed with the introduction of vote-by-mail--non-final election night results. Ald. Pawar's election night totals were 9,740 votes. Nevertheless, an interesting phenomenon has developed with the introduction of vote-by-mail--non-final election night results. Ald. Pawar's election night totals were 9,740 votes. However, since that time his vote total has grown to 9,844. His opponent's total has grown too, to 2,048. The percentages have changed, 82.78% to 17.22%. It may not be over for a while. The Board of Elections doesn't have to certify the election to the State Board of Elections for a while yet. The numbers are likely to change as the post office delivers ballots. But don't get your hopes up Kathy, there aren't 7,797 ballots still outstanding. Alderman Pawar has been re-elected.

Thoughts on Bad Dog being Gone?

What are the thoughts on Bad Dog Tavern being shuttered?

  • They were always understaffed for lunch on that patio. Only one server for a LOT of tables on weekdays. Also, their kitchen vent clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while and there was a grease stain about 8 feet long along the exterior wall facing the patio. Just gross.

  • Botkin Kinch: the knife-blade

I got the worst food poisoning of my life from their ahi tuna tacos. It was a very memorable experience.

While you may not use the public walkway everyday to get to and from work, most of us do. Even though my calves and balancing abilities are getting stronger, my patience has worn thin. Also, it is very dangerous for a walk to turn to ice even for the more agile folk of Ravenswood.

SO! I present an offer for the people of Ravenswood this:
Let me shovel your walkway for a small fee. Depending on the snow, I will come to your house however many times.

My perimeters will be Damen & Lawrence - Oakley & Lawrence, Oakley & Wilson - Damen and Wilson. Depending on how much you hate shoveling and have yet to do so this year, I will come to your house, too.

What do you say?

  • I know Maggie I almost called you today. But I think my son is going to Shovel when he gets home.

Stolen Honda Wheels

Another Honda in the neighborhood has had their wheels stolen; this time on Wolcott at Ainslie. It happened to me a couple years ago. It took the guys just a couple of minutes to get all 4 tires and get out of there. Wheel locks are a must, especially if you drive a Honda!

I posted a story as well. Man, you would think the Police would be looking out for this. We , fortunately , don't have to deal with violent crime like other areas. That being said, address what we do deal with over here. Property Crime!!!! We have to put the pressure on them. Might even be a good idea to make this an issue with our City council reps.

Campaign yard sign on parkway

So I'm a new member of the 40th ward after the redistricting (former 47th ward) and woke up this morning to find an O'Connor campaign yard sign on the corner parkway in front of my house. Now I don't own the parkway, but I do have to maintain it, and no one asked if they could place it there. I don't expect they'd remove it after the election either. I noticed the signs on other corner parkways as well.

  • Since my last post I was out for a walk so I decided to walk to St.Mathias where I voted and on the way I noticed where the O'connor signs were earlier are now gone and there are still daleiden campaign signs on the parkway it would be nice if her people who put them up remove them like oconnor's volunters did.

  • That's good to hear that some of them have been removed but volunteers should ask before putting them in the parkway in front of homes.

Any Salons Specializing in African American/Kids?

I am about have two foster kids living with me, both African American girls. I know it's going to take me awhile to get the hang of their hair and in the meantime, I may need to take them to a salon. Wondering if anyone has recommended salons that will braid children's hair. Prefer Northside, but I am not sure I can be particular. Thanks!

  • I don't know of any in the neighborhood (we live in Lincoln Square - I'm black and my husband is white and we have 2 little girls). I get my hair done at Van Cleef's in River North also Yehia in the South Loop area and I know they are good with all types of hair. Good luck!

  • There are quite a few in Rogers Park/Edgewater. I would Yelp it and see what you can come up with. If you are looking for styles other than braids I know a friend who likes Paul Mitchel Salons and I know that Cally's Curls and Company on Howard is good as well. I would also consult YouTube or search for blogs for advice! Good luck!

Dirty Activity in 33rd Ward?

Went to Linne school to vote this morning and encountered an election judge on the corner yelling at two teens: "Don't do this again! The investigators are on their way!" On my way out of the polling area I heard another judge on the phone describing "an issue with two individuals"... it sounds like the teens were handing out some sort of false information, but I couldn't confirm (didn't want to creep on his convo). Just wondering if anything similar happened to other folks.

  • Picked up about 10 Mell cards INSIDE the voting room at Horner Park yesterday. Handed them to the official who didn't bat an eye. I am astounded the Mell machine did not steal this thing outright. I disagree with much of Meegan's fiscal ideas but I don't think he is connected so might be responsive to the Ward's people.

  • Genevieve artist, photographer, cat lady, mom, WHorner Park

    Ugh, ridiculous.
