I have a big, strong dog. He has fear aggression. He wears a muzzle outside and gets treats for being calm. We are working with a behaviorist. I am working very hard to train him out of his fears and bad habits.

Please, If you see us on the street, don't be fooled by how closely he pays attention to me (I've got the treats!) or how calm he seems. If I ask you not to approach with your dog or young child, please respect my words. It doesn't make a difference if your child loves dogs or if your dog is a sweet, docile snuggle bug.

Yes, he's muzzled up and can't hurt you, but you hurt him when you don't listen to me. He doesn't need anymore setbacks from well-meaning people. I understand you think he is sweet/handsome and you want to pet him. He doesn't. He thinks you're trying to hurt him - or me.

I'm not asking you to be afraid or cross the street if you see us. Passing us on the sidewalk is no longer an issue. If he gets riled up by your dog, I will cross the street. Don't worry. I want us all to be safe and enjoy a pleasant walk.

I expect that some people will flame this post and tell me to "put him down." I don't have to defend myself to you and I won't. I am not putting people in danger. I'm simply asking you not to try to introduce your dog to mine, or encourage your child to try to pet him.

Thanks for the heads up, MichelleAP. What kind/color of dog is he? I have a dog who is reactive on leash - we tend to avoid dogs she doesn't know on our walks while I work on her confidence.

  • I think we can get people to grasp the idea of a yellow ribbon. Like anything else, it just takes education and reinforcement.

CRAFTJAR in Ravenswood

Hello All,
I'd like to get some community feedback on a concept that I'm working on. I'd like to open a craft supply, kit and workshop boutique on the corner of Lawrence and Hermitage. It would also be a great place to shop really clever gifts and greeting cards. Take a peek at the (in progress) website at: www.craftjar-Chicago.com and let me know your thoughts? Is it a great idea? Waste of space?
Thanks!

  • Erin- if you take a class there they only allow materials you buy there to be used. So a big part of their profit is from overpriced fabric.

  • If you're thinking of the Needle Shop, then I totally agree. The fabric is very pretty but ridiculously expensive. I took a class there which was expensive in itself, and on top of that I had to buy the really pricey fabric. Didn't think it was worth it.

I paid this crook $445.00 dollars and the receiver now has problems that didn't exist before. He ALSO put in a new on/off switch to bypass the original one without my consent, claiming the original was dead. This is not true. It worked perfectly fine until he began this 10 week nightmare with my unit, my money, and hiding from me.

And as he MOSTLY did during the 10 weeks of this, he won't return any of my phone calls on his latest debacle.

Unfortunately, I learned too late WHILE HE HELD ON TO MY PROPERTY and hid from public view he is a LONG-TIME crook, incompetent, OR BOTH.

I live in a two flat, with my apartment being on the first floor and another tenant above me who rents the entire floor. For the first month of living here there were not any problems with the tenant above my apartment, but the in the past few months he has been making unnecessary noises at all hours of the day. I'm talking about from 5 am to 2 am nearly every day. It is absurd. He is constantly running around, or making loud thumps, and other odd noises that disrupt my work and sleep. I do not understand how some of these noises could be made without a pet, but my landlord has assured me that he does not have one, but he is a "collector". Sometimes it sounds like this person is hammering things, at midnight, or jumping up and down at 6 am. I confronted my landlord about it, and he said he would "talk to the guy and take care of it" - and from that point on the noise making has only gotten worse. One day I walked up the back porch stairs to see if it led to his apartment, and what I saw was quite disturbing - hoarding. Hoarding of trash, of papers, boxes, broken electronics, and this was just in the backroom. It would be impossible for someone to escape from a fire, or even a firefighter or policeman to enter in case of an emergency. Hoarding is a mental disorder, and the fact that this person does not sleep, or sleeps at very irregular hours, further confirms my suspicion of mental illness. Now I am 100% in support of helping people with mental illness, but am not sure about the legal situation regarding how the landlord described this person who directly affects my quality of life. Does anyone know if a landlord has to inform a tenant about their neighbors in the same building if they do have a disorder that could affect other tenants. As I am typing this, it sounds like the guy is dropping things right above me, and then moving around heavy objects, and slamming doors. Do I call the cops? Do i call a lawyer? Or am I screwed for the next 8 months?

Thanks,
Joe

You can try calling the Police - they might help. I had an issue along time ago when I lived in the suburbs similar to this. After getting no where with my landlord I called the Police and they were very helpful. They spoke to my neighbor and my landlord and informed them that there are laws regarding noise and my neighbor was very much in violation of them.

  • Mel in Ravenswood Local know-it-all.

No, your landlord has no obligation to disclose another tenant's medical condition. Your lease probably has a provision for "quiet enjoyment" and if there is a violation of that provision, you may be able to terminate the lease.

Dog Bite

Hi neighbors, my husband was out on his morning run this morning and a large dog bite him. He noticed a woman with a small dog and a large dog on the sidewalk so he gave distance and ran on the parkway to avoid the woman and the dogs. The larger dog pulled away from his owner and bite through two layers of clothing and broke skin. He exchanged numbers and is on his way to the ER.

Any suggestions on the next steps?

  • Andrea Kim Animal Advocate and Animal Care Provider

I would recommend asking any and all people in the area who are walking dogs if they know of the dog in question and where they live. Most regular dog walkers (owners and hired) see the same dogs every day and know where they live and may even know names.

  • DougB 47th Ward Curmudgeon

FWIW, my dog was attacked and both me and the other dog's owner were bitten repeatedly trying to separate the dogs. My dog then ran away, and although the owner was horrified and apologetic I tried to get his info but my brain was scrambled. Anyway the point of the story is, I was bitten and had no recourse to locate the dog or anything, which made me nervous about vaccinations. With medical treatment I did not get anything nasty however, if one data point makes you feel any better.

Snowblower Repair?

We're having a tough time finding a place to repair our snowblower. Seems that all the places we've found have bad reviews on Yelp, and the one well-reviewed place has a 6 - 8 week wait (and after last winter, we don't want to take that chance). Anyone know of a good repair shop that could handle a snowblower? We're happy to find a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall place, or even take it out to the suburbs.

Thanks in advance for any advice, neighbors!

Chihuahua without a leash at Wilson and Sacramento at 7:10 am Friday. He likes to bark

  • Doesn't sound like you scooped him up, but in case you did: There is a very barky, kind of aggressive Chihuahua who lives in a house on the south side of Wilson between Whipple and Albany. The building has an iron fence around the front yard and the pup can (and does) easily get out. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the dog.

The pizza place that was in the Wolcott's/Troquet/Mangal spot was there forever, too. You've got to *really* drop the ball to not succeed there, but the last three management/ownership teams to occupy the space seem to have done exactly that. It's kind of unbelievable.

  • Um, the owner could start with a name change. Imagine this conversation:
SHe: "where ya wanna eat tonite, Honey?"
    He: "Mangals"
    She: "yuck"

I have renter's insurance from USAA, thanks to my ex, who was an Air Force brat. Her family's house burned down when she was a teenager, so she was adamant about having it. When we split up, I continued to get it, because why not? Good thing, because shortly after I moved to a new apartment in 2003, I was burglarized. USAA paid my claim promptly and in full (minus a $500 deductible), and I got to replace my stolen stuff with better stuff. Now I'm as much of a renter's insurance evangelist as my ex was.

It's particularly worth it to get the "valuable personal property" rider if you have camera equipment, musical instruments, expensive golf clubs or other pricey and specialized stuff that you travel around with a lot.

Business Funding Axis Capital Group: Micro, retail to remain Mandiri’s focus

State-owned lender Bank Mandiri will continue focusing on micro and retail business in the coming years as the two provide the highest margin for the bank compared to other segments, according to its executives.

Mandiri vice president director Riswinandi said the focus on micro and retail was part of its rebalancing plan.

“We want micro and retail to make up 35 percent of total operations from 25 percent in previous years, while we are aiming for wholesale to make up 65 percent from 75 percent,” he said in a press conference during the 2014 Investor Summit and Capital Market Expo on Wednesday.

He added that the bigger focus on micro and retail would provide the publicly listed lender with a better income margin as the overall banking industry was facing a margin squeeze due to the tight monetary policy.

Data from Mandiri’s first-half financial report shows that the amount of loans channeled to the micro sector reached Rp 30.96 trillion (US$2.6 billion) by the end of June, while those disbursed to the retail or consumer sector stood at Rp 60.3 trillion.

Mandiri claims to control the second-largest share in the domestic micro lending market after state-owned lender Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI).

Does anyone have a parking spot they would rent for the winter?

Hi neighbors!

I live close the to Rockwell/Lawrence intersection. I use my car every day for work (real estate) and since moving to this neighborhood realized I will probably want to rent a parking spot for the winter. I work odd hours, and am dreading the parking game in our 'hood once the snow comes.

There's nothing in the neighborhood on the MLS so I wanted to reach out on this website.

Does anyone have any leads? It would be GREATLY appreciated.

Not interested in why, but simply one word: who you voting for?

women's health care and reproductive rights are important to me. I just checked Rauner's web site and I don't see that he mentions this issue at all. Quinn does address women's equality and repro rights. Besides I completely support raising the minimum wage. I think it's deplorable that rauner made so much money but wants to lower the minimum wage. he back stepped on this but I don't trust him as I think his real belief is that 'free market' will take care of everyone. I'm for Quinn.

However, as a participant in politics at local, state and national policy issues and elections, I am very concerned about the national trends in policies and laws in states that elect Republican governors and legislators. and now the statements of Gov Christie, head of Rep governor's association. We in IL CANNOT send a message to the country that all this attitude and action is okay. Again, re Rauner, making a lot of money in various ways in business does not equate to successfully running a state. And he still has not laid out a plan on just how he plans to accomplish his goals--it's dangerous to put him in power.
