Yesterday I was expecting a package from FedEx, but when I arrived home in the evening it was not there. Tracking the package on their website showed it had been delivered. I was upset, certain that someone had stolen it. I went back outside to search more closely, thinking perhaps FedEx had tucked the package in the bushes or a neighbor in my building had moved it. Nothing.

As I was sitting on the curb outside my building wondering who would do such a thing, a car drove by and then reversed back. A young man got out of the car and approached my building with a large box. I jumped up to greet him. He asked the address of the building and said the package had mistakenly been left at his door. I was so happy I gave him a hug and thanked him a dozen times. He made my day.

I have no idea who this amazing neighbor is or where he lives. If you are out there sir, THANK YOU! I will be sure to spread the good karma around.

Have a happy and safe holiday weekend everyone!

I agree about Fed Ex being on the incompetent side....then they charge the recipient extra(even when manufacturer does free shipping) to deliver at a different time!

I can't stand when companies I order from ship thru FedEx, I specifically request UPS or USPS and if they can't, I don't order from them. Comcast likes to use them and that is how one of their boxes got stolen. So now Comcast is not allowed to ship equipment to me, I make them have a service tech bring it out. Thank goodness I live is a slightly better area with kind neighbors just in case

Metal scrap place?

Hi Neighbors! Does anyone know of a junk collector or metal scrap place that would take my portable dishwasher (that it seems is too expensive to fix)? I would like to get some money for it...

  • SpamAlert Spamophobic

If you've come to the realization that this isn't worth the hassle, it's true as someone above said that you can hail some passing alley scrapper and they'll almost assuredly drag (or hopefully, carry) it out of your house and haul it away.

  • And yes scrappers will almost always carry out stuff you want to get rid of. Just be careful.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. I live nearby, and have been lucky so far. This area is a prime area because most people work, and homes are left alone for hours at a time. Someone mentioned that they had their car stolen from their garage. It can be an inconvenience, but it isn't a bad idea to cut the electricity from the garage while you're gone so that someone with a device can't mimic your code to gain entry.

Hi all,
Yesterday while walking past a condo building at the edge of my alley I noticed two men talking to a resident in the front, main door of the condo building. They were wearing bright yellow utility - type vests and holding clipboards with papers on them. I didn't hear what they were discussing and didn't think much of it. Until.....

Today at around 4:45pm, someone rang my buzzer. When I'm not expecting anyone, I never answer my buzzer. Anyone that knows me and wants to "drop in" unannounced has my phone number, so I never answer the buzzer if I'm not certain it's someone I know.

After I didn't answer, I started to hear through the apartment walls, my neighbor's buzzers ringing. So someone was clearly trying to gain access. Well, someone in my building let this person in and through the peep hole (goodness I sound like a psycho, but I'm a female living alone and I take this stuff seriously!)

Anyway, long story short, I could hear a muffled conversation between the man and one of my neighbors. And through the peep hole I could see that it looked to be one of the same men I saw yesterday wearing the yellow vests. He then, skipped my door, but went door-to-door knocking at all the neighbors. No one else answered and he left. He didn't go to any other doors in my building.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this in the neighborhood recently and if it's legit, or if my instincts are correct and it's potentially individuals casing the neighborhood right before the long holiday weekend.

I live in the Montrose/Clark area. Just thought I would post and see if anyone knew more about who these guys are and if they are someone to be concerned about.

Thanks all!

Dear friends and neighbors,
We have been operating a Little Free Library at the corner of Sunnyside and Hamilton since June with great pleasure. It's been a wonderful way to meet neighbors, share books, and spread the love of reading. (You can see more about the organization at littlefreelibrary.org). However, three separate times in recent weeks the entire library has been emptied of books.
I'm asking for your help in two ways:
1. If you see someone taking ALL of the books, please say something, or note the license plate number or make of car. (Some neighbors saw a man last week pull up to the library, take all the books out, put them all in his car, and drive away).
2. We are now running out of our supply of books to keep refilling it. If you have books you would like to donate -- books in good condition that you actually think someone would really like to read, not books you need to get rid of -- please do! If the library is full, put them on our porch and we will keep them for when this happens again. Of special need is children's books for all ages, which seem to fly out of there.

Of course, we want to keep the library open and available for everyone who loves to read and share books. Thanks for your help.

  • astat Welles Park Neighbor

I suggest putting a few marked books in the free library and seeing if they turn up at the used bookstore down the street, There are people who sell books to used bookstores for (not much) money. This is probably just one more source of $$ for people who really need $$... like the person stealing metal gutters and downspouts in another thread on EveryBlock.

  • Astat: good idea, and I just started restickering!
Horner Park: thank you so much! You will see the library right on the corner. If it's full, please feel free to leave books on the porch.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

Valid points on both sides, but the bottom line is that fairly or not there are laws against drugs, and no one wants to see gangbangers selling drugs in their neighborhoods.

To clear something up, the police are deployed into neighborhoods because of crime statistics, not race. If a disproportionate amount of minorities are arrested for drug offenses, it's because neighborhood residents complain about the drug dealers in their neighborhoods, not the other way around. Poli ce do not pick the neighborhoods that they are deployed to.

Did you know that in the City of Chicago Liquor License Restrictions and Regulations it states that “ while BYOB concept is considered a permitted activity for restaurants within the city limits, there are important city policies regulating the BYOB practice that restaurants need to consider:

Fee: no direct or indirect fee may be charged for the allowance of alcohol
consumption without a City of Chicago liquor license: this includes corkage fees

Serving/Storage: Restaurant employees may not touch, handle, pour or
store the alcohol in any way. Patrons bringing their own liquor must handle it themselves

Liability: It is always recommended that BYOB locations obtain liquor
liability insurance to protect against potential lawsuits. It is illegal for an establishment to serve anyone who is intoxicated; likewise, a business that allows patrons to BYOB can be held negligent for allowing patrons to overserve themselves.

Banquet Halls: Banquet halls that allow BYOB service may be required to obtain a liquor license. “

  • So a BYOB can only charge a fee if they have a liquor license?

  • It appears so. This is an awakening. It provokes me when there is a $5.00 corkage fee. I know it costs to send the wine glass through the dishmachine but, come on. Maybe the restaurant should not provide glasses since they are not allowed to be involved in the BYOB process at all.

See a Man Pulling at Gutters on Garages in the Alley?

Didn’t witness it first hand but last night when we arrived home around 7 pm we found our neighbors talking in the alley. I guess a man with a truck was pulling at the gutters over a garage. When confronted by a neighbor, not the garage owner, he was gruff then drove off without answering the neighbor as to what he was doing. Later, the elderly neighbor who owns the garage came out and confirmed that she wasn’t having work done on the garage. Has anyone else seen or heard of something similar going on?

  • GCV New to North Center

My guess is he might be trying to take the downspouts for the metal. In my old neighborhood, there was an entire alley block with missing downspouts because they were stolen and sold to scrap yard.

  • Thanks, yeah that was one of our theories.

Besco was outstanding for us (& significantly less for better quality) than any other company we called. Our a/c died in the middle of a heat wave and our kiddo had severe reflux which was worse in heat. A kind friend lent us a window unit but tough to live in one room 24/7 with a screaming baby! Besco sent someone out immediately (the owner!) even though it was late and a Friday night. They recommended a better, smaller unit than the bigger pricier one we thought we'd need (that another company insisted we would need). They were so great that after we chose them we decided to replace our 20+ yo furnace (we shockingly found out it was a rebuilt clunker) at the same time too. Everything works great and our bills went down as well. A few years later everything works great. We highly recommend them!

Wood Fence Recommendation

Hello Neighbors! Do you have a recommendation for a handyman, contractor or Fence company. We are in search of a solid product and a good customer experience. Thank you and enjoy the Holiday weekend.

  • We used "advanced fence and gate" this summer and were very happy with them. They installed a vinyl fence and a wood fence for us.

  • We used Fenceworks in Highland Park (http://www.theguyon41.com/) for a wood fence this spring. Workers were very careful, finished in one day, and price was good for an all-wood fence.

  • I used Fenceworks as well and I am happy with the work they did. Also finished in a day and were very neat.

Recommendations for furniture refinisher?

Hi everyone, I have an antique dining room set from my grandparents that is in dire need of refinishing. Does anyone have a recommendation on a great shop anywhere in the Chicagoland area?
Thank you!

Credit where credit is due (City Graffiti Removal)

I just wanted to share this positive experience with the EB community. Yesterday morning I noticed that our building was tagged. I went to the Chicago Streets and San page, filled out a form that took a minute and presto; this morning they were out blasting the tag away. Pretty impressive City of Chicago!

  • Agreed. Submitted an online 311 request on Tuesday after business hours for graffiti removal for 3 garages on my block (incl. my own). Graffiti was removed yesterday - less than 24 hour turnaround!

  • I had the same experience. I saw what the lovely kids had done one night on my buliding and thought, no way,,, no way are they gonna be able to get that off.... And presto/chango, the blasters removed it with no trace of anything there. I really am so thankful for the blasters!

Before and after school care needed

We are in need of a child sitter for before and after school care for a 7 year old child. We would need someone to watch him before school and drop him off at school, then pick him up from school and watch him until one of us gets home. We're in north Lincoln square. This would only be necessary when I'm out of town for work. Please inquire if you're interested. Thank you.

I also had a short fence but up so that it forces people to not go my front lawn and step on my new grasses, bushes, flowers, etc. However a new issue has come up. When people wait for the bus they sit on the posts of my short fence. The bus stop has no bench or bus stop shelter. It is just a tiny metal pole with the CTA sign. For 12 years I have struggled with people going on my lawn to wait for the bus. Thought that once I put a 2 1/2 ft long fence people would stay away. I have contacted the CTA but I have not heard back from them. Contacted the aldermans office but simply said they cant do anything about that. Any ideas of what can be done?

Hi Phillip, I believe in my post I did not suggest "putting spikes on a small fence on a cheap bench on your property" I dont even have a bench. and thanks for the concern/reminder that if someone gets hurt, one most likely will be held responsible. I am always conscious this is the U.S.A everyone gets a lawsuit here and there. Good times!
