RECO: Kitchen Floor -- tile design & install

Hi Neighbors,

I'm looking for a tile place that will also help you figure out what to get (type, color, style, etc). Nothing too fancy. Doesn't have to be in the city but ideally not much further than Niles or Northbrook. If they install that would be great.

If they don't install, looking for a reco for a contractor.

Thanks!

Grey cat missing! Fliers are all over Glenwood and wayne. Grey, slight tabby swirls.

I don't know their phone number offhand, bit fliers are all over the hood. Please spread the word. Slightly chubby, goes by "fart" but answers to "kitty". She's friendly but probably very scared. Missing since 2 days ago.

Financial planner recommendations with student loan expertise?

Hi Neighbors,

I am looking for a financial planner with a preference for someone who has experience, or knowledge of, student loan debt forgiveness for people working in education, or qualifying not-for-profits. Also, rather than someone willing to consult for free, but charges fees (darn it, I forgot the name of those stock buying fees), I'd prefer to pay hourly for advice on planning. Looking to get advice on some short term goals (less than 5 years) and not so much retirement planning.

Thanks, neighbors!

Street Sweeping Nonsense--

When you pin common sense against revenue collection, which do you think comes first? Why would street sweeping on the residental streets surrounding Ashland/Montrose be scheduled on the same day fifty cars have to be moved from Ashland for the weekly cleaning? Another revenue grab, and this soon after the election? Smh.

  • They only swept one side of many streets. So you have last years leaves and this years tree buds making water drainage a mess. I'd call the alderman but they don't respond like they used to and he's probably busy posting pics of his dog on Facebook.

  • The election is over.

Gunshots heard on Hoyne near Lawrence

Anyone else hear what sounded like gunshots around 5:45 a.m.? It woke me up, so not entirely sure what was happening or if it was imagined. Nothing like the sound of birds chirping and gun shots to remind you that it's spring in Chicago.

  • JEMM Lincoln Square resident

I heard it too right behind my house. I believe it was the transformer on the utility pole exploding. It has happened a few times in the past.

  • This is happening regularly with the transformers. Com Ed should invest in its infrastructure instead of pocketing its profits and sticking its customers up for higher rates.

City Sticker Renewal Form

Has anyone else out there missed their new city sticker renewal form as should be sent out by the city according to the new personalized expiration schedule? I'm regretting not putting the renewal in my calendar. Just got a $200 ticket and the online renewal form is not cooperating. Ugh.

  • My sticker expires at the end of May. I received the snail mailed renewal notice last week sometime with the option to get a 1 or 2 year renewal. Re-newed on line just now. Took about 5 minutes. Now to wait and see when the sticker actually gets to me.

  • As a follow up, I did the on line renewal on Monday. The new sticker showed up on Thursday. It comes in an unmarked envelope, which I assume is for security reasons. It would be easy to think of it as junk mail, if it didn't say City Hall on it. Over all, a very easy process.

Rory Fiedler: Who's Backing Him?

Hm. So I saw that this guy filed to run against Pawar in the 47th. Is this the "Jeri's Diner Candidate" that some of the old Machine stalwarts were talking about digging up a few months ago, or just a random independent? Curious if anyone knows about his candidacy at all.

  • CynicalPolitico Political Consultant, Geek, Policy-Wonk Wannabee

Ok. I was right, well, sort of. I predicted 85 to 15 for Pawar. The numbers are 83 to 17. I may be cynical but I'm a politico, and I'm right.

In a few weeks we'll find out who funded Fiedler's campaign and I bet we'll find a Gene Schulter. Beware 47, the race for 2012019 began last week and if you're not careful the goons will come back.

Construction Industry Challenges and Hurdles

Axis Capital Group, a construction company based in Singapore has written a lot of articles about the development of the construction of eco-friendly companies not only in our main base in Singapore but also to our branch out company in Jakarta, Indonesia and to other countries as well. The new wave of Green Movement as many people have called it is totally a trend in the turn of the century. The Green Building Revolution spawned new catchwords such as sustainability and green collar jobs. However, it cannot be avoided that there are conflicting issues and hurdles in the task of keeping track with green evolution.

4300 N. Troy - Speed Bumps

We noticed yesterday that signs were put up on the block indicating that speed bumps were going to be installed next week. Does anyone have any information on how this decision was made, i.e., who made this decision? I know that we were never contacted in any fashion regarding this change. I find it very disheartening that such a change to a street can be made without any input from the residents.

  • We are actually trying to get speed bumps on our street and had to go through and get signatures from enough residents to do it. I'm not sure what the status of it is, we all signed the petition late last summer.

  • FCZ Montrose and Troy

Yeah, that's what I thought was needed - petitions. We never signed one and I asked several neighbors if they had. They hadn't. I ended up contacting Deb Mell's office. They claimed they couldn't find the petitions. So, they put a hold on the project. What I suspect happened was that a "connected" person wanted speed humps so they just went ahead with it without getting the necessary signatures.

Before you disconnect the downspouts, call Lincoln Sewer (773) 276-0610 and have them check the catch basin which may need to be tuck-pointed, or simply cleaned of debris. This is routine maintenance and should be done every 10 years or so. They are a really great sewer company and fixed an age old problem at my 108 year old house, and another for my next door neighbor.

Sometimes, it is really difficult to redirect a downspout and you do not want to disconnect anything that will end up spilling water on your walkways as that will turn into ice during winter. Plus it is illegal to allow any water from your property to spill over the lot line onto your neighbor's property. Only front and rear spillage. If your gangway side walk is not crowned to carry it to the street or alley, you might need to replace it. Which is a can-of-worms.

    Hope this helps.

Exterminator recommendation for ants?

Ants keep invading. Orkin was ineffective. Anyone know a good exterminator? I need to find out where they're coming in!

  • Great idea. Leave those traps out for at least a week. That way it'll get the stragglers.

  • VernB LS Resident

We had a really bad infestation and exterminators were unable to get rid of them. Bought Terro traps a few months later, put them all around our house and also bought Terro liquid bait to put outside (by visible ant nests and walk ways) took about 2 weeks but eliminated all ants. Ant free for 3 years. I put traps out every spring for good measure.

Good morning,

An email was received from a neighbor on the 4400 block of N. Wolcott (between Montrose and Sunnyside, along the Brown Line) that a suspicious individual was spotted who seemed to be actively casing his building this morning, circling it at least twice and then making his way to the third floor via the back stairs/deck. The individual is described as being an African-American male, wearing a dark (black or green) jacket with white Adidas stripes on the sleeves.

The person who reported this made eye contact with the individual, at which point he left the premises and has not been seen since. A call was placed to 911.

In the last year, there has been several reported burglaries involving apartment buildings in and around that particular block and along the Brown Line, and usually in the morning.

Please be alert and report any suspicious activity to 911 immediately (and feel free to email us at this address, too, so that we can alert the neighbors).

I live on that block on that side of the street! Thanks for letting me know. I am just wondering how this individual was able to walk around the apartment building a few times and get up the back stairs because I think all of our buildings on this block have locked gates to both side alleys leading to the back. Sometimes people leave the back gate open which ticks me off. Anyway, that is unnerving for someone to be that bold looking in windows on a third floor balcony. And I definitely am not walking out there and asking them if I can help them or take their photo. Come on!

Truck Hit and Run on Ravenswood

This afternoon a semi truck turned from Wilson to Ravenswood southbound and hit two cars and didn't stop. If one of these is your car, you should know that there were three witnesses, one of whom called the cops.

Also just before this, I saw this same truck trying to turn south onto Wolcott from Wilson and doing a p*ss poor job of it, so if you were parked there and your car was damaged it might be the one responsible.

  • Rachel writer, indexer, editor, researcher

Yes - the woman who talked to the police got it, and gave it to them. And we left a note with the info on the windshields of the damaged cars.

It was pretty awful - the driver didn't slow down at. all. We all just stared in shock.

"Every day, the Cook County Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) dumps 1.2 billion gallons of wastewater into the Chicago River.
This wastewater – which isn’t disinfected – comprises 70 percent of all the water in the Chicago River. This is a serious health threat for area residents.
Illinois Pollution Control Board (IPCB) needs to protect public health.
Take Action:
Tell them to approve the Illinois EPA’s proposed disinfection rule and require MWRD to join modern municipalities across the country in requiring disinfection of sewage."

I called the Water Dept. number posted by another neighbor and spoke to Mike. They sent a guy out yesterday who took samples. He was very through. We have a water softener hooked up and so we bypassed that so he could test the water coming into the house. He just called and they had found no bacteria (which is a test they can run within 24 hours) and several other levels (chlorine for instance) were within normal range. There are still a few results which take longer to generate but this gave me some peace of mind. My son is still experiencing eczema but I am less concerned about it being a water issue now. Good luck neighbors.

I only ask because I recently hooked up a shower filter and my skin has been less irritated with some decreasing redness ever since (no other changes, medicines, etc.) I'm just wondering if it's possible a small spike in chlorine could trigger reactions among those with a sensitivity?
