Park district camps are very affordable, but it may be too late to register

Apachi Chicago is not so affordable, but they do have scholarship money available (if your kids are Jewish, though, again, it may be too late in the year) http://www.gojcc.org/day-camp/locations/jcc-apachi-chicago-day-camp/

  • I'd recommend JCYS day camps, there's an urban camp based in Lakeview - Big City Day Camp and a day camp in Ingleside, IL - camp Henry Horner. Also Jewish, however, especially at Big City there is a significant number of non-Jewish campers. See www.jcys.org. It's a non profit and also offers sibling discounts and scholarship dollars but it is getting late in the season. Also, if you are Jewish JUF offers some scholarship dollars for camping as well and all JCYS camps qualify. The programs are great!

Peruvian Restaurant in "Expressions" spot?

Does anyone know whats going on at 4020 N. Lincoln? It's the storefront across from Starbucks that has had signage in the windows for years saying "Expressions, coming soon". I heard from the owner of Coles Appliances next door that it is being built out as a Peruvian restaurant. Does anyone have the scoop?

  • I did see a couple of guys holding blueprints standing outside and talking about it a couple of days ago. There was a short flurry of work in the space some time last year, but nothing after that.

  • I'm Peruvian and I hope that their food is great cause I'm always raving to my passengers about how great Peruvian is :) I'm going to try it then recommend :)

Beige and Brown Cat at Wolcott and Berteau

We found a cat crying outside our porch at about 11pm on April 23rd. It looks like one of our neighbors heard her/him before we got home and left some food out. We did the same, but it continues to cry and cry. We are torn as to whether or not to bring it inside, but we don't think our own cat would appreciate that very much. If anyone has a lost cat, please respond. It's extremely friendly and clearly doesn't enjoy being outside.

USPS Packages stolen

This afternoon we had 2 packages stolen; the contents were removed and the boxes dumped in the trash.

Our place is on Western AVE near Winnemac. Not exactly low traffic area.

Argh!!

  • That is very frustrating and upsetting I'm sure...if you're concerned it may happen again you could consider renting a P.O. Box? Are you in an apartment building where there may be a chance it was another tenant from your building?

  • Preeti Ravenswood Superstar since 2003

Were the packages inside the building lobby or outside the building? I've seen packages left outside buildings where any passerby can take them. If you live in a building where package delivery is left outside, maybe get a P.O. Box or have the items delivered to your work. I would report the theft to the post office so they are aware that it's a problem in your area.

Lakeshore garbage pickup at 5:20am

Has anyone else noticed that Lakeshore is picking up garbage before 7:00 and not by just a few minutes. I have called 311 to report them on several occasions. I have tried to talk to the driver but that just turned into him banging the cans louder. We have called the company several times. The first time we received a phone call and results for a couple months. Now they do not return our calls.

The only way they will stop is if enough people complain to 311 and they keep getting fined. Please call 311 if you hear them out before 7:00.

  • Call 911 and they will send a cop car over if one is available (obviously not taking away from more serious crime). If nothing else, this will put it on record that there are noise violations. Get the number of the truck doing the early pick-ups. Keep a log of...

Call 911 and they will send a cop car over if one is available (obviously not taking away from more serious crime). If nothing else, this will put it on record that there are noise violations. Get the number of the truck doing the early pick-ups. Keep a log of who and what times. Call your alderman and ask to speak to your Streets and Sanitation superintendent.

Is it your building paying them to pick up trash? A neighbor? Talk to the board or mgmt company and tell them about it. Someone is paying for the privilege of being woken up early. They can speak to the company since they're the paying customer.

The deadline for trash trucks to come is 7-A.M. It took my building a long time and we had the Streets and San inspector on speed dial for a while, but we finally got seven different trash companies to stop coming early. It's a $500 fine if Streets and Sanitation writes them a violation ticket.

  • Lakeshore is my condo building garbage collector. I've yelled at then at 4am multiple times. I've called lakeshore multiple times. I haven't tied calling 311. I'll give that a shot.

Troquet no more?

Anyone know what's going on with Troquet? It's been "closed for maintenance" for the past few days. Seems ominous . . .

  • I'm starting to think this location is cursed. I remember the previous bar seemed to go down in flames, figuratively speaking.

  • Oh that place is a great addition to the neighborhood! I hope they are planning on staying. Although, I do have to agree that the service is pretty bad, the food has always been great. Plus as a former business owner I can assure you that there are plenty of reasons to fail a health inspection that do not involve cleanliness or food preparation. In fact, its usually never either of those cases.

Getting a tree out of the parkway

There is a huge, monstrosity of an evergreen tree in front of my house in the parkway that I'm dying to get rid of. It was planted by the previous owners and although I love trees, I really detest this one. I've heard the city will hardly ever grant a permit to remove a tree in the parkway, though another person told me they aren't so precious about evergreens, which they don't themselves plant. Does anyone know the deal on this? I'm happy to plant another tree, just not this type.

  • The city was happy to cut down a huge beautiful tree in front of my house because of a blight and said they would plant another the following year. I was then told by the alderman's office that the ash tree problem has used up the funds for new plantings. I intend to buy a tree and plant it myself. However, I am not sure they will cut down a tree because it is ugly.

  • Will E. Kay o Nosey Neighbor.

If you've the cash, a city worker's got the axe.

  • I actually don't need them to cut it down for me - I'm happy to pay someone. I just need a permit from them in order to do it.

Sprint Network in Lincoln Square/Ravenswood

Just wondering if anyone can comment on reception on the Sprint Network in the area. I am looking for a new service and see a good plan through Virgin on the Sprint Network. I am currently on T-Mobile and cannot get any reception in my home so hoping for an improvement. Thanks.

I'm not in Lincoln Square or Ravenswood but next door in Andersonville and I can tell you that here and in many places in the city the Sprint reception is abysmal. At a friend's house at Ashland and Catalpa I get no reception indoors at all. Nada. Out on the sidewalk in front of their building things seem fine but inside it's hopeless. In my own apartment at Argyle and Clark, I get from a half a bar to a bar and a half of reception, tops--and that's since the upgrade. Many mornings it is a challenge just tracking the bus due to network errors. Again, it is better outdoors. And, there are a number of places down in the Loop where I get no reception at all indoors. I don't use my phone as much as many people do and the service I get with Virgin is cheap, so I tolerate it but it is frustrating. I should have known better than to sign up for it, though, when they had to walk my phone over to the window at the now-defunct Virgin Store on Clark just to get a signal...(in fairness, that was before the "upgrade" but I can't help thinking the rotten reception in the store's showroom had something to do with the fact that they are no longer there.)

  • I can't speak for Sprint, but I will say that ATT reception is terrible in this area. We currently use T-Mobile and the service is good in Chicago (for us), but terrible everywhere else.

I'm pretty sure that Verizon is the way to go and when we decide to upgrade our phones we'll be going with them just for better coverage while traveling. My husband uses a Verizon 4G hotspot thingamabob to connect to work remotely and we get reception pretty much everywhere with that thing.

Hi everyone,

I arrived to volunteer and the team lead, volunteer coordinator, shared with the other girls and I that we were to place our belongings we wished to not have sitting out in this "locked file cabinet."

Please be advised that the "locked file cabinet" was a sh*tty cabinet that someone could easily bust into. But, no need as the key to said sh*tty file cabinet was placed on a folding table in the middle of the check in area often left unattended to.

My gut told me to take my purse and keep it with me but I didn't want to appear suspect to the individuals we were helping that evening.

So, silly me, I left it. Only to come back to the "locked file cabinet" about two hours later and bam, its gone.

I'm so thankful I had friends with me to help figure out what to do as the church staff were not very helpful in assisting a quick search of the church property and staff.

I want my loss be a lesson to all doing good out there, keep doing good things for others but leave all personal items at home as many of these locations do not provide adequate storage and if your gut is telling you something, trust it. I'd have my purse and all its fabulous contents today if I would have trusted my gut.

Looking for a vet

Hi everyone. I'm moving into the City from down state. I'm bringing my cat with me who is in stage 4 renal failure, so I need a vet. I'm stocked up on her medical supplies for a while but I'll still need a vet to take her to.

Do anyone have any suggestions for a good, not too expensive vet in the area?

  • My vote is for Dr. Murphy and Dr. Scott at West Wrigley Animal Hospital on Ashland (south of Addison, north of Roscoe). They took great care of my 10 year old cat when she was hospitalized for kidney disease and were conscious of keeping costs but still giving her the care she needed.

  • I like Dr Jewell, my cats see him and not one of his partners. He and his staff treated us with a lot of compassion when one of my cats died and later when my other cat was euthanized. I switched from the Cat Hospital because I did not like seeing different vets all the time, (my favorite one left).

Suspicious activity at Belle Plaine and Lincoln and in North Center Town Square

Has anyone else noticed loitering and some generally odd happenings in this area. I see a car parked with people getting in and out and people loitering near the buildings. My guess is that there might be some drug sales going on. I'll be contacting the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone else has notified them.

  • tbf

I talked to the Alderman's office yesterday. This is a known issue with that block of buildings that house the empty laundry mat and the currency exchange. He said that they would let the beat Captain know that the activity is picking up and that neighbors should call the police anytime we see something odd.

  • I often see sketchy types going in and out of the closed laundromat. I've even seen them taking in giant TVs. It seemed odd, but it's not illegal to move a TV, and while I walk by often, I don't live in the neighborhood so I never reported anything.

Sent April 15, 2014

Jim,

Just around the block from the new Mariano' there is a public disgrace. Besides the hundreds of residents using it, some customers and a lot of Mariano's employees are having to negotiate it too -- and somebody is going to get hurt.

The sidewalk in front of my neighbor building, at 4817 North Wolcott, managed by ICM Properties, 773-549-5443 has been a terrible hazard and now, ever since this last winter, it is a menace to public safety. I've tripped over this broken, uneven and potholed walkway for over 10 years and I'm fed up.

Please see the attached photos documenting this disgrace, and the building management.

I'm requesting that the Alderman do whatever possible to either force the management to repair this sidewalk in front of their building, or better yet find some emergency money and have the Ward replace it entirely.

Thank you ...

  • I think you meant Bill no works at the Alderman's office, Jim still does - he's the chief of staff - http://chicago47.org/staff/

  • Delia Kropp Loving Ravenswood since 1990

As this post's creator, I'd like to express my thanks to the Alderman's office for getting the deteriorated stretch of sidewalk not merely repaired but entirely replaced. The work began 3 days after I emailed Mr. Poole, who acknowledged the urgency of the situation, and was completed within 24 hours. By any standards this response was exceptionally quick. Well done.
Many thanks as well to my neighbors here on Everyblock.com who voiced their support. Hopefully we've saved some trips & spills.

Philadelphian Romanian Church Crazy Drivers

Call if you'd like but I'm telling you, the police have looked me in the eye and said "I'm not ticketing a church, I don't want to go to hell..."

Believe me, the traffic here is a million times better than it was 8-10 years ago. They used to literally park in the intersection for hours. At least now they park in spaces and the noise level is down. I had thought maybe they suddenly had a change of heart since it's been so much better lately.

Most of the tight parking issues that force you to park on Ravenswood are not that much better when church isn't in session these days. The fact is that we have a lot of condos/multi-unit buildings and far more people/cars than there are spaces. We've politely asked that they respect the neighbors. (we met with the pastor in person, inside the church, with the alderman's office representative)

They don't care about the neighbors. Just be careful when you are crossing the street. Trying to do more will just leave you frustrated.

  • I used to live right across the street from this church. When I first moved in it was something different, I think maybe an Episcopal Church, and I hardly noticed them. As soon as it became the Philadelphia Romanian Church parking in the neighborhood became impossible on Sundays and some evenings and the street was much more crowded. They are one of the reasons I moved.

Street Sweeping

Thank goodness that the street sweeping schedule is beginning again. After the long winter and with spring just beginning, it's important to move your car so the sweepers can remove all the gunk and debris that has accumulated in the streets. It's unsightly and could clog sewer drains. Yes, it's inconvenient to find a parking spot during sweeping times, but important nonetheless -- and easy to avoid a $60 ticket!

Fun segment by Curious City about an otherwise mundane topic: http://www.wbez.org/series/curious-city/street-sweeping-essential-service-or-revenue-scam-109221

  • Kristine Cloud 30 year resident of North Center

Kudos to Shelley's husband for cleaning the sewer grates! It helps if everyone pitches in on tasks like this. It drives me insane that the leaves don't seem to fall until the beginning of December, yet the last street sweeping is usually in October or early November. The city would save itself a lot of work in the spring if it had another sweeping in December (weather permitting). Oh well...

I love trees as much as anyone but planting a tree in the outfield of a baseball diamond at Welles Park seems like an odd choice. I never have been able to figure how decisions are made at the Park District.

Tree reassignment sounds like a blatant violation of plant rights!

I hate to be a total cynic, but the kids will probably have a way of dealing with that wee tree. A few years ago, I saw some similarly-sized trees planted in the small park at Lawrence and Washtenaw right where the children regularly played soccer. Those trees got damaged in a hurry.

I was walking through the area near Rockwell And Foster about an hour ago and there was police tape and a whole crime scene set up on the sidewalk just north of Foster on Rockwell. I asked around and apparently around 6 PM someone was shot by two offenders.

That's all I've got, haven't heard anything else about it yet.

Shootings seem to be on the rise in the area north of Lawrence.

All I know is that the hoodlum/gangbanger element is on the rise in the neighborhood. There was a drug related shooting in the McDonald's parking lot in LS a couple of months ago. My friend and I walked out of Lincoln Square lanes with her two young children right after it happened after having an early dinner there. When I read the crime blotter, there are always muggings and armed robberies on Lincoln over by the "no tell" motels - right down the street from the police station. I live close the the police station and the last time I called 911 because of a domestic disturbance that I thought was going to get really ugly, the response time was over 20 minutes even through the station was less than a block away. A couple of years ago, a kid was killed when his head was bashed in by five thugs RIGHT NEXT to the police station. The police won't even show up now for burglaries. We are losing the battle against the criminals and they know it. Even when they are caught on camera, unless the offense involves some kind of violence or threat, the police do very little because they have bigger priorities.
I was always kind of on the fence about gun control but I am now thinking about getting a gun for my home. The police are overworked and as a single person living alone, I have to think about how to best protect myself since I know I can't rely on the police to deter the criminals and catch them. That's why these guys have no problem walking up to someone in broad daylight and shooting them or driving by a busy public park filled with kids playing and spraying the place with bullets. Even if they do get caught, the current sentencing structure is ineffective. Those guys get a slap on the wrist and are released right back into the neighborhood.

A couple of things to keep in mind is that although one lives near a police station doesn't insure a quick police response. The squad cars aren't dispatched from the station. The cars are already on the street, and could be anywhere when they receive the radio assignment, and you're right the CPD is shorthanded. A class of 84 graduated today, but when you consider that there are 22 districts, and three watches, that comes out to approximately one more officer per tour of duty. Not much of a difference. Secondly, people who commit crimes, expect to get away with them. Many crimes, especially the violent ones, are crimes of opportunity, or impulse. such as road rage. That's why security videos, or the proximity of a police station doesn't mean that much.

Ald. Pawar running again

This is great news...I hate the term limit part though. Does anyone know if the committeeman is organizing for the campaign or how to get involved?

Bill- you're right on the ward being the envy. My point is people from other communities want an alderman like ours. The Mariano's was not started by the former alderman. I was at the community meeting for the Roundys and 11 story condo tower. Schulter proposed 14 million in TIF. The proposal did not have community support and died. This Mariano's is all the new alderman. You are right on the ball field. It's Schulter. You're wrong on the French School. My good friend, who also happens to raise money for Lycee, always talks about what an obstructionist the old administration was. I also remember Schulters proposal to build single family homes on the school site. My point is we don't need a relative of the old administration in office in 2019. Even you can agree with me on that.

  • I agree Julie. I'd hate to see someone from Schulter's administration take over.
