Grocery Gal visits Julius Meinl coffeehouse on Lincoln Ave. They have a great loose leaf tea selection, and you have the opportunity to have some great pastries or even lunch at the same time. It's a true Viennese coffeehouse experience in Chicago. http://grocerygalblog.com/julius-meinl/

Shooting @ Rockwell and Foster

Just a heads up.

I was walking through the area near Rockwell And Foster about an hour ago and there was police tape and a whole crime scene set up on the sidewalk just north of Foster on Rockwell. I asked around and apparently around 6 PM someone was shot by two offenders.

That's all I've got, haven't heard anything else about it yet.

Shootings seem to be on the rise in the area north of Lawrence.

Lol see? West of western and Sheila. Read your comments. Then you'll see why I said what I said. You cannot voice an opinion on any neighborhood here without people getting bent out of shape. It's... sad, for lack of a better word.

They do review pink posts and sometimes delete them. "Thumbs down" only shows up on mobile devices and it's the same as clicking Unneighborly.

Street Sweeping

Thank goodness that the street sweeping schedule is beginning again. After the long winter and with spring just beginning, it's important to move your car so the sweepers can remove all the gunk and debris that has accumulated in the streets. It's unsightly and could clog sewer drains. Yes, it's inconvenient to find a parking spot during sweeping times, but important nonetheless -- and easy to avoid a $60 ticket!

Fun segment by Curious City about an otherwise mundane topic: http://www.wbez.org/series/curious-city/street-sweeping-essential-service-or-revenue-scam-109221

  • lauren east lakeview republican

Yes, but for an afternoon game that doesn't really help. This was a 2:00 game. I tried to park for work around 12. See what I mean?

  • Michelle Edgewater Edgewater Resident: Love the neighborhood!

I understand the frustration Lauren, but I'm not sure what you'd have them do. If they change the schedule to another day whenever there's an event, then they'd also have to change another location's schedule and it would end up being a huge inconvenience where you'd not sure when they will come. If they cancelled the cleaning because of the game, they would be cutting hours for all the employees involved (probably a union contract violation) and letting the street debris build up. What would you suggest as a solution?

I wonder who thought planting a tree in the outfield was good idea.

I love trees as much as anyone but planting a tree in the outfield of a baseball diamond at Welles Park seems like an odd choice. I never have been able to figure how decisions are made at the Park District.

Need plumbing help

I have a long history of do-it-yourself plumbing projects that have ended in disaster! The harsh winter has left a leaking outside faucet. A "simple" repair I am sure I could make far more complicated. The last time I hired a Plumber I used an Angie's list referral and got one for a reasonable hourly rate but they took far too long to complete the project, left to shop for parts etc. I ended up with a larger bill than the estimate. Does anyone have a recommendation for a plumber or handyman for our Lincoln Square Neighborhood?

Gutter & Siding

Neighbors,
Thanks for the great reccommendations for the carpet. If anyone has any good reccommendations for a contractor who does siding and gutters, please let me know.
As always Thanks a bunch.

  • Call Slawek, 773.497.6744
He has completed several jobs, siding, gutters, windows....very professional and reasonable.

  • I highly recommend Peter Skobelski. 773-415-1552. He did sliding insulation and gutters on our Victorian 3 flat. Neighbors commented on how clean he left the site each night. He nailed the details and even did a few things not in the contract at no charge. He isn't a contractor. He is someone the contractor sub out to.

Looking for a vet

Hi everyone. I'm moving into the City from down state. I'm bringing my cat with me who is in stage 4 renal failure, so I need a vet. I'm stocked up on her medical supplies for a while but I'll still need a vet to take her to.

Do anyone have any suggestions for a good, not too expensive vet in the area?

  • My aunt and I had a horrific experience at Jewell Animal Hospital. Her cat was
misdiagnosed by 2 vets there and then died at the ER later that night. I question the motives of Dr. Jewell and his staff. His veterinarians all seem to be inexperienced in

My aunt and I had a horrific experience at Jewell Animal Hospital. Her cat was
misdiagnosed by 2 vets there and then died at the ER later that night. I question the motives of Dr. Jewell and his staff. His veterinarians all seem to be inexperienced in
emergency medicine and he rarely works these cases himself. Apparently, because he is not interested. My aunt was distraught by how she was treated there as well. With so many other great vets in the area, listed previously, don't take a chance with your pet's life. Look for the professionals who care.

  • Another thing about Jewell, my neighbor, who has very little money took her cat there when he had, well I think it was crystals in his bladder or something. It is a ongoing problem. Anyway, shortly after this visit, her cat had the same problem again but late at night and they went to the emergency vet. They were shocked to see that the emergency vet was much cheaper for the same examination and course of treatments than Jewell was. Usually emergency vets costs more.

Public sidewalk a safety hazard, and eyesore: 4817 N. Wolcott

If you've ever walked the east side of the 4800 block of N. Wolcott, you've walked over or around the worst stretch of sidewalk in Ravenswood. I'm finally fed up enough to do something about it and would encourage the support of all neighbors. Thanks!

Below is an excerpt from the email just sent to Jim Poole in the Ward 47 office.

Jim,

Just around the block from the new Mariano' there is a public disgrace. Besides the hundreds of residents using it, some customers and a lot of Mariano's employees are having to negotiate it too -- and somebody is going to get hurt.

The sidewalk in front of my neighbor building, at 4817 North Wolcott, managed by ICM Properties, 773-549-5443 has been a terrible hazard and now, ever since this last winter, it is a menace to public safety. I've tripped over this broken, uneven and potholed walkway for over 10 years and I'm fed up.

Please see the attached photos documenting this disgrace, and the building management.

I'm requesting that the Alderman do whatever possible to either force the management to repair this sidewalk in front of their building, or better yet find some emergency money and have the Ward replace it entirely.

Thank you ...

I arrived to volunteer and the team lead, volunteer coordinator, shared with the other girls and I that we were to place our belongings we wished to not have sitting out in this "locked file cabinet."

Please be advised that the "locked file cabinet" was a sh*tty cabinet that someone could easily bust into. But, no need as the key to said sh*tty file cabinet was placed on a folding table in the middle of the check in area often left unattended to.

My gut told me to take my purse and keep it with me but I didn't want to appear suspect to the individuals we were helping that evening.

So, silly me, I left it. Only to come back to the "locked file cabinet" about two hours later and bam, its gone.

I'm so thankful I had friends with me to help figure out what to do as the church staff were not very helpful in assisting a quick search of the church property and staff.

I want my loss be a lesson to all doing good out there, keep doing good things for others but leave all personal items at home as many of these locations do not provide adequate storage and if your gut is telling you something, trust it. I'd have my purse and all its fabulous contents today if I would have trusted my gut.

Just one more point - never let your worry about embarrassing someone else stand in the way of protecting yourself. Cross that street when you feel iffy about the guy walking towards you - he'll get over it. Or most likely won't even notice. Keep alert when you are out in public; keep close tabs on your property - I can't tell you how many times I've seen women walk away from a table in a restaurant where they've left their purse "just for a second," or on the floor or rack at a store while they went to take a quick look in the mirror. I once had my purse stolen from a fitting room when I went to the front to ask the salesperson to get another size. Turned out there was a second exit, doh. And don't be shy about shifting your shoulder bag or bakpack to the front from behind when you're on a crowded train or bus. And yes, trust your instincts. They have developed over millenia to keep you safe!

  • Thanks Lethe in St. Ben's, sorry to hear about your bag and possessions. Its really amazing how much our gut/instincts really tell us, if only we'd listen more often :)

I just posted something similar in a thread started by a woman who lost her passport: Check your facebook. I recently contacted someone about a lost wallet this way, and with the death of landlines and listed phone numbers, I suspect it is probably the most common way for people to attempt to return lost wallets nowadays. BUT: ***Make sure you check on facebook itself, in the messages tab to the far left on the home screen, in the "Other" folder. If someone who isn't a friend of a friend messages you, the message will, oftentimes, end up in there. It won't show up on your phone, and you won't even get a notification about it. So check manually***

Philadelphian Romanian Church Crazy Drivers

Sunnyside and Paulina
Twice this am I was almost hit by the cars speeding through stop signs to drop off people at church! Then to be told f*ck off by the driver when I told them to stop.

I called about the illegally parked cars that continue to park in tow zones.

What more can be done! I documented the two cars that almost hit me as well.

  • Whenever I've attended CAPS meetings, the officers in attendance usually recommend that you by-pass 311 for such offenses and call directly to 911. Parking on the sidewalk is illegal, as is parking on the corner and double-parking for the duration of services. Next time I come home on a Sunday in the early evening and I notice this behavior, I will put in a call. (I guess that I've gotten out of practice!)

  • Call if you'd like but I'm telling you, the police have looked me in the eye and said "I'm not ticketing a church, I don't want to go to hell..."

Believe me, the traffic here is a million times better than it was 8-10 years ago. They used to literally park in the intersection for hours. At least now they park in spaces and the noise level is down. I had thought maybe they suddenly had a change of heart since it's been so much better lately.

Most of the tight parking issues that force you to park on Ravenswood are not that much better when church isn't in session these days. The fact is that we have a lot of condos/multi-unit buildings and far more people/cars than there are spaces. We've politely asked that they respect the neighbors. (we met with the pastor in person, inside the church, with the alderman's office representative)

They don't care about the neighbors. Just be careful when you are crossing the street. Trying to do more will just leave you frustrated.

So keep an eye out for this vehicle roaming the alleys.

All Saints' Episcopal Church's - Now them!

I have lived in the neighborhood for 6 years. Today, while walking past All Saints' Episcopal Church during the food pantry I saw one guy urinating outside the church in broad day light! Then I saw men going up to people's homes stealing the bags of plastic eggs that were left by a neighboring church opening them and then throwing them on our lawns. I asked them to pick them up since no one is paid to clean up their mess and they laughed at me. The food bank that I donate to them get good from are the same people making out neighborhood terrible. I reported it to the church. This is insane

Why

  • I saw that about the purse. That totally sucks and a good reminder to only bring what will fit in your pockets. Organizations really don't have the secure space or want/need to be responsible for volunteers' valuables. Once at paws' intake center, a woman put her purse under an employee's desk to find a dog had peed in it. Not surewhat is worse - a stolen bag or one filled with dog urine!!

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Dana, those are both just as bad. At the dog beach, it is never recommended to bring a bag...especially in the summer unless it is a poo bag.

The first is a black, IKEA ektorp sofabed - it's a few years old, but in really good shape - we've used in a spare room for the occasional out-of-towners. IKEA no longer carries the sofa, but I've found replacement covers online elsewhere, if black isn't your thing. The cover is easily removed to be washed. There are some minor nicks where the cat got a hold of it, along the back. This guy is heavy. And we can throw is the squishy, foam mattress topper we use with it to make it more comfortable.

The second is a set of dark brown, corduroy-ish apartment sized sofa/loveseat and oversized arm chair. Two years old - the sofa is in good shape - some minor wear, we would keep, but we came into a different living room set. The chair, on the other hand, has a rip along the back where the pillow meets the frame - I believe it's easily repaired - I'm just lazy - so we've just thrown a blanket over it. And woah - get this, it comes with THREE pillows.

I can't get both pictures to load, so let me know if I can send one to you or if you have other questions.

I'm currently getting some quotes from moving companies for a partial move, but I'm assuming this is going to be the most expensive option. I also don't want to ask my friends to help (the cheapest option?).

That said, has anyone had luck posting an ad for this kind of assistance on Craigslist or some other site? If so, how did it work out? Any other cost-effective suggestions? Ideally, I'd like to be spending $300 max (I hope this isn't horribly unrealistic on my part).

  • Check out microshipinc.com. I have used them twice for partial moves and was very satisfied.

I posted this on craigslist, but I thought I might have some more luck finding friendly, trustworthy help here, accompanied by a $30 thank you from me.

I need help moving a large plant from the fourth floor of a stairwell-only apartment in the Lincoln Square area, to my apartment in Ravenswood, which is on the second floor.

I am hoping to find someone who has a pick-up truck or SUV, but if you think you can help me fit it in or tie it to my sedan, that works too. :-)

The photo was taken pre-trim, so it is significantly shorter and more kempt. The ceramic pot is about 1.5 feet in diameter, and probably about 40 pounds.

I need to move it this Saturday, April 19th, sometime between 11-1PM. It should not take more than 30-45 minutes, tops.

Thanks for looking!

Jenny

Thank you all! I actually have someone's help lined up. If it falls through, Kelly or Fabian - I will let you know. So kind of you both to offer! :-)

I bought 4 items that should have cost ~$26. I paid by credit card but didn't need to sign for my purchase. Even worse, I wasn't handed a receipt and actually noted that fact as the cashier seemed real flustered but moved on anyway.

It wasn't until the next day that I logged in, checked my transactions and saw that Mariano's charged me $84.69.

I went back to bring this up with customer service and was given a "we'll get back to you" response which, in the scheme of opening a huge facility like that, is probably pretty low on their list of things to worry about especially because I have no proof in the form of a printed receipt.

I just wanted to let everyone know so that if these opening glitches do happen, make sure to get proof of purchase and all that. I know it seems like common sense but how many times have you just breezed through a transaction?

I'll update this post if they actually get in touch (they took my number) but I'm doubtful.

In fact, residents and Metra riders do the "Metra shuffle": residents leave for work in the morning, vacating spots, and commuters drive to our neighborhood to park near the train. If you are a 9-5er you probably won't have much of an issue. It's a little different later at night and on weekend nights, but really not terrible compared to other neighborhoods.

Has anyone else noticed loitering and some generally odd happenings in this area. I see a car parked with people getting in and out and people loitering near the buildings. My guess is that there might be some drug sales going on. I'll be contacting the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone else has notified them.

  • My girls took dance in that large building before the owner sold it. She was constantly calling the police. The convenience store on the corner is the problem. I have heard they sell individual cigarettes to teens and that there was unsavory business going on in the condemned apartments above it at times. The police know. Not sure why nothing has ever been done about it.

I talked to the Alderman's office yesterday. This is a known issue with that block of buildings that house the empty laundry mat and the currency exchange. He said that they would let the beat Captain know that the activity is picking up and that neighbors should call the police anytime we see something odd.
