Cars (and bikes) not stopping at stop signs in Ravenswood

I walk home from the Metra up to Foster Ave, usually on Wolcott. Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done?...

Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done? It doesn't seem like there is any police presence in the area, so it goes unnoticed. I don't like having to worry when I'm following the laws and being a safe pedestrian, that I'll be hit by a car or bike.

  • It goes both ways. Pedestrians walk into streets without a glance up from their smartphone. I'd say be aware of cars coming out of alley ways, bicyclist riding on sidewalks and other calamities that could cause you harm.

  • i'm definitely aware. but sometimes bikes riding next to tall fences silently whizzing up the sidewalk give you no warning and you can't see them. And I'll be looking right at a driver while they look at me and start going when I'm inches from their car. The pedestrians have the right of way, so no matter what drivers should look and stay stopped if someone is about to walk across a crosswalk. That's it, period.

But to your point about pedestrians have the right no matter what; I have seen way too many times pedestrians take their lives in their hands by crossing when it is clearly the cars right of way, or even challenging cars. Pedestrians vs cars, pedestrians will lose. just yesterday we witnessed a woman talking on the phone crossing a side street (balmoral) against the light, couldn't take a second to look to see that a car was coming. She was really lucky that the car saw her and stopped. And it angered me. Because that driver would probably have been at fault for that carelessness. And what great way to prove a point from a hospital bed. It's not right, we all just need be respectful, share the road, to take care of each other, and ourselves.

no parking on damen/wilson

Anyone know why the east side of damen in the n 4500 block has no parking signs during the day? I see no activity there.

  • I've seen Streets and San tree trimmers out along Foster. Maybe they are attending to the canopy.

Which department is listed on the signs?

  • No department listed. Just one of those white signs with red and black lettering.

Feihong, I know it's too late now, but my dad goes to Miller at Irving and Ravenswood (it's behind the storefronts off the alley). If you have a chance to, visit auto zone or sears and get one of those battery checkers for the large auto battery.

Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • Thanks everyone. My attorney's office has contacted the Texas DMV. My witness got the plate right. They won't release information to the attorney w/o a subpoena or updated police report. So we're working w/CPD. (though it may take awhile) Thanks for keeping your eyes out.

  • LStone Western and Lawrence

Kristin I am sorry you were injured and the driver behaved illegally. Sounds odd but it is encouraging to me to read how many people stepped up (and are stepping up) to help correct this wrong. I hold you in my thoughts for a speedy recovery and am grateful that Chicago turned out some really decent folks in the just the right place to help you through.

Yard sale/garage sale ideas needed!

So - I don't have a yard, I don't have a garage, and I don't think my landlord would approve of me buzzing people into the whole building (and giving them access) if I have it in my apt. We have a courtyard, and I think I would kill all the grass and flowers if I had my belongings and people trampling on the grass all day. There's a very small bit of grass in front of my bldg, but again, I think my landlord would not be happy with the damage to the grass which is very well maintained.

I really need some good suggestions! Is anyone in Lincoln Square/North Ctr. thinking of having a yard sale or garage sale soon? Would you have some extra space, and I could pay you, barter, or work something out with you? I have too much stuff to bring it to a flea market. I am a friendly, considerate person, and we'd be happy to work something out with a neighbors or group of neighbors. Really need to sell some things soon. Thank you for any suggestions you may have!!!

Great cook and good with kids needs room to rent

Looking to rent a room near my job in Ravenswood (or on L/bus lines to get me there). It is a small entrepreneurial company who helps nonprofits with digital marketing, so money is still tight and can only afford to pay up to $450. I'm quiet, easy going and happy to contribute in other ways:

* Am a great cook--healthy and tasty meals usually--but can also make the "comfort foods" we all love too.

* Some child care--as the eldest of 7, helped raise my younger siblings, plus recently I've taken care of my friends' kids when they've gone out for the evening & when they've gone to Europe for 2 weeks. Can provide references

* Have 20+ years in sales & marketing, so if you need some help with marketing your business--or just need someone to type your manuscript--happy to help.

* Some personal care assistance--worked in a hospital many years ago plus experience working with family members who have challenges (my 25 year old niece was born with a neural tube disorder and my aunt had ALS)--so could provide some assistance to you.

I'm a nonsmoker and I don't drink (food allergy). My cat is quiet and shy--and we are looking to move by August 1st. Look forward to meeting you!

    Hey Steve,

I'm so sorry about the disconnect! I'm still new on Everyblock, so I'm not sure why the email glitch (except I know I posted the day before they took the system offline for updating--so maybe that tweak to the system created the disconnect?) I'll send a note to you via the address you posted. Thanks! All the best, Cassie

  • Catherine Dennis Artistic and Professional--with a Cat

    Hey Everyone,

Please accept my apology if you sent me a note and I didn't respond to you. I just tested and my EveryBlock email appears to work now.

One update to my post, I've got a little more flexibility on my move date--can move as late as Sept 1.

    Thanks everyone!

    All the best,

How's the new Mediterranean restaurant on Wolcott/Montrose?

Looks like it's grand opening was yesterday...no reviews yet.

I got the sucuk "trash" shish kebab for $8 (the word trash appears on their menu). FYI, sucuk is a cured beef sausage. It's quite dense, and it tastes very salty with a bit of tang. I thought the food was OK, but not great. The fries were a bit mushy. I did see plenty of other customers in the restaurant today. I think I will go back, but their menu is pretty small, and it seems to be pretty standard Mediterranean fare.

Here's a photo my lunch: https://www.flickr.com/photos/58418400@N00/14763474703/. It doesn't seem like a lot of food, but I was actually pretty full after I finished.

Wedding Planner Recommendations?

Happy Wednesday Neighbors,

Does anyone have any wedding planner recommendations? I'm in need of a day-of coordinator, but also curious about how much more pre-planning might cost (I'm just a notch above clueless). I'm mostly looking for someone easy to work with that knows what they're doing, can guide/work with me vs. work for me, and who won't break the bank...

Thank you in advance!!!

Package and mail ripped open - nothing actually stolen that I know of...

I live just north of Lawrence on Rockwell in a courtyard building with an outside locked door that leads to our foyer (door to stairwell also locked) and I had a package ripped open yesterday and some mail ripped open, but all was left behind. The person didn't actually steal anything (maybe the clothes I ordered weren't their taste), but I was wondering if anyone else in the area has had this happening to them lately? I would assume they saw the package and tried all the buzzers hoping someone would let them in thinking it was a delivery person.

  • You should file a report with the Postal Inspectors office. There is a rash of mail thefts/mailbox break-ins in the area that they are supposedly working on resolving.

  • Thanks, Candi, I will do that. I wasn't sure where to report. Zlatan--thanks for sharing.

Considering switch from AT&T landline to Comcast phone

To save on my bill I am considering switching from my AT&T landline to Comcast phone service. Does anyone have any experience with this, positive or negative? I read that number portability can depend on where you live, and Comcast may not always give you the correct information up-front. Thanks in advance.

Street Cleaning Question

I've always always always had parking....and now I'm parking on the street. With these street cleaning signs posted on one side of the street....that means I shouldn't park on that side of the street during the day and time posted, right? I can park on the other side of the street that day and time and not get ticketed, right?

  • Read this article regarding Snow Route signs: http://theexpiredmeter.com/2008/12/the-lowdown-on-snow-routes/

Essentially, you can be ticketed and towed when the snow is more than 2" deep at these locations. It doesn't matter if there wasn't any snow when you parked your car.

  • I would never risk parking anywhere that signs indicate a ticketing or towing time. Tickets are a way to increase revenue and you should always be cautious when parking. The ticketers don't ride on the back of the street sweepers and come around at different times than the sweepers. Ive...

Expert on flooring?

Hello, I am looking for some advice on renovating the floor of my studio (it's a business). Looking for a contractor to give me a free quote. Thanks!

  • Thanks everyone. Here is more information to help:
Currently I have padded interlocking flooring covering up some very unattractive cement and tiled flooring, in addition to baseboards that are coming up from the cold winter we endured. I am not sure if I want hardwood floors or just a clean up of the work that was previously done, so getting someone in here to let me know my options I suppose is my first thought.
