TV Repair Services (or recycling)

I have a c. 2008 Sony 40" LCD TV that, due to bungling by the movers I hired (long story), isn't working properly anymore. I have the feeling it might be repairable, but I have no idea what the expense for that might be. And new, decent TVs are pretty affordable these days! Any advice on: where I can take this for repairs, or where to junk it if it's not worth the hassle?

(I would be willing to sell it as well, but I don't know how much damage occurred, so I don't want to short-change anybody).

My experience is that fixing an LCD TV costs between $75 and $200, typically. (MUCH more if the display screen itself is damaged in some way.)

You'll have to weigh whether fixing a 6 year old Sony is worth whatever they end up charging- display technology has improved quite a bit since 2008, and you might find that spending $350 to buy a new Sony 40 inch 1080p LCD TV (that is ABT's price for a Sony KDL-40R380B http://www.abt.com/product/84766/Sony-KDL40R380B.html ) makes more sense than spending $150 to fix your older set....

Car accident????

What the heck is going on near montrose and ashland! I am just trying to get home and everything is closed off... Even the ALLEYS are jammed with cars. Was there an accident or are they filming something??

  • Rachel writer, indexer, editor, researcher

They're also doing roadwork on Ashland between Montrose and Lawrence; the northbound lane is completely closed. I would imagine that didn't help.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I actually wrote to Pawar's office since the signs don't offer much help with the times of the road closure. I've seen Ashland closed after midnight for work (which would make more sense...right?) and during afternoon rush hour, causing a traffic nightmare on WB Irving. (Pawar's office did write back...saying it's closed until 7 or 8...)

Transfiguration of our Lord Catholic Church

Does anyone know what is actually going to happen to the church, I heard that they need to raise $1.6 million if they are going to stay open.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I just looked for a website (after looking up their location) and found a dead website. They have a free listing on a parish site. Hopefully a parishioner will see this and chime in! (I used to work near that church until last December.)

What was that?

I just saw 2 or 3 military planes fly VERY low over my building that is near Lincoln and Foster? Scared the poop out of me since they were so low and I didn't hear them until they were right near my place. What was that? Is the President in town this weekend or was this something else? I thought that it may very well be a presidential escort. I can't recall them ever flying over my place in the past so I was wondering if it was something else.

  • Dan

3 Ospreys have been doing flyovers. Most likely they were advance party for the President, scouting out Gary airport because Aurora air traffic control is still out.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Dan, That sounds about right. At least I agree with Obama's thinking of not screwing anything else up at ORD. :) He is officially in town. I think I heard him fly over earlier in the evening.

Good breakfast places??

I'm new the the area and one of my favorite things is a good breakfast. Id love to hear anyone's favorite spots. Nothing fancy, just good ole home style joints are what I prefer.

  • Sam and George is great, but I wouldn't consider it in the Lincoln Square area. It's a bit south, but yes, S&G is great.

Hello! I'm looking for someone to take over my gym membership at Lincoln Square Athletic Club. I have a monthly contract that expires on 7/31/2015, so 10 months left on the contract. The monthly rate is $79/month. (They offer a discount if you work at a non-proft). LSAC is an awesome gym but I can no longer afford it. The only way to get out of my contract is by moving far away or having someone else take over the membership.

With the membership you can take as many group classes as you'd like (yoga, pilates, spinning, TRX and more!) and of course work out on your own. There is even a pool! Their facilities are very clean, well taken care of and has friendly staff.

Here's their website: http://chicagoathleticclubs.com/locations/lincoln-square/

Ideally I'd like someone to take over the membership ASAP. Please send me an email and we can set up a time to meet at LSAC. Thanks!

  • In addition to shorter time commitment there would be NO enrollment fee which is $150. Great deal!

  • SpamAlert Spamophobic

I'll take it if you pay me $948 cash. Deal?

  • Hi Alicia, I'm not sure when you posted this, and if you still need someone to take over your membership, but I may be interested. I've never been to the LSAC but I was thinking about going and looking at the facilities this weekend, or early next week (my current gym is in Rosemont).

Artists and Commercial Landlord Partnerships

Regarding the vacant storefronts on the major streets in the Ravenswood / Lincoln Square area, a partnership between landlords & local artists (ceramics, illustrators, photographers, mural artists, & so on) would enable three things: To make an otherwise useful space more visually appealing to show it's true potential to prospective commercial tenants, to beautify the neighborhood, and to allow artists to show off their talent and or product. How much interest is there an something like this?

  • Yea I'm sure those landlords will just let you use it for free. Good luck with that.

I'd bring it up to Pawars office.

  • Winonammac is right. Landlords often give space to artists for "pop-up galleries" for exactly the reasons stated. It's a wonderful idea and it's been happening all over chicago and other cities for years. Do it!

  • Winonammac A smudge west of Winnemac Park

Other culturally rich cities are finding success in programs like this. Here is a great example of how a relationship between commercial landlords and artists can have a positive impact on potential rental value of a property and add life to otherwise bleak spaces. The Minneapolis program is here: http://www.artistsinstorefronts.com/about.php

Additionally, Boston Redevelopment Authority has an initiative called "Boston Art Windows" to fill vacant storefronts with temporary pop-up galleries, museums, stores, or individual artist displays.

Vigilante justice

Considering the lack of state organized enforcement, I'm curious as to what your thoughts are about taking matters into your own hands. The police are responsible for sweeping garbage on the streets into a due process justice system. There are laws in place to protect both the individual citizens and the collective state. There are inherent problems with this design. Criminals may go free and innocent people may suffer. Although, vigilantiism yields far more innocent people into suffering than state operated policing.

What do you think? Do you think vigilante justice is a good idea for your neighborhood? Is the system flawed so much on the policing end that vigilante justice is the only thing to do?

Lincoln Square area infant care - recommendation request

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a local day care that will take infants 3 months and up?

Thanks so much

  • EPDavis Street photographer

I second Craig Tucker's recommendation. We had our daughter at Rainbow Brite since she was 3 months. It's affordable, geared more towards infants and, at the 2700 block of W Summerdale, a good location -- 2 blocks from Swedish Covenant and 3 1/2 blocks from Police District 20. After 20 months there, our daughter will be moving on at the end of this week to the next age level, so unless it's already filled, there may be a spot open.

Cleaning Service?

Does anyone have one they would like to recommend? We kinda got burned on the last one we tried.

  • for two years we have used a company called ana's maids (unrelated to my name). their scheduling is smooth; the fees are reasonable; the service is polite; they provide the supplies; and they send over 2-3 cleaners each time. highly recommend.

  • We use Simple Spaces. They use all natural cleaning supplies which is nice since we have small kids crawling around the floor. They are local (owner lives in Ravenswood) and we are very happy with them. http://simplespaceschicago.wordpress.com/

Who the hell farted by River Park?

Just a brutal smell emanating from the river.

  • Also, it seems the magic words are "strong sewage smell" when you call to report it.

  • Oh thank you! I was beginning to think I was going crazy (which I suppose is always possible anyway). The past two mornings while driving to work I kept thinking that I must have stepped in dog poop. Both mornings I actually pulled over to check my shoes (very near the river). Then I worried that something might have died inside my car's engine because it smelled so bad. I will definitely report it next time I smell it.

"Anybody who thinks the streetscape was built so that the people living near it could realize 100% profits on their real estate doesn't understand real estate or urban planning."

Group Flashing Gang Signs on 09/27/2014

As I was driving north on Wolcott early this morning around 4AM, I notice a group of 3 to 5 young men standing in the west side alley just south of Warner. As I drove closer one of the men ran out into the street flashing a gang sign. My friend who drove past about a minute later said the men yelled something at him. I called 911 and reported it.

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Ravenswood think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:

Flat Rate Car Service to Midway

Hi. Does anyone have any recommendations on an affordable flat-rate car service to Midway from Lincoln Square? I can't convince my wife to take the EL and I'm worried a cab might be crazy as we're going to the airport during rush hour...

  • JW in Lincoln Square 35 year city resident

Uber is cheap if you use Uber X or Uber Taxi. Avoid the Black Car service. They are way more $$ than if you called a private car service and booked it. I use Chicago Private Car. Most of the cars are nice, though you're not always getting a brand new Lincoln. Still, you can specify a pick up time and they tend to drive better than cabbies.

  • You can use uberx to go to the airport but only uber black can pickup from the airport.

Peace and Quiet

I feel bad for those people who are caught up in the airport bedlam after the fire, but MAN, it's so nice not to have airplanes loudly flying overhead day and night. Ahhhh. Nice and quiet! What a huge difference.

  • nkot, I don't think they do. But at the last meeting there were so many people that showed up to protest the noise and to demand a new environmental impact report, they had to put the overflow into another room. So their next meeting will be at a bigger venue - Rosewood Banquets. Irena S is right though - we need to keep up the pressure on the elected officials, particularly the mayor who has been silent on this issue.

  • Thank you for the info, HofTroy! My understanding from the one Trib article (http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-80865206/) was that the mayor was a supporter of adding at least some noise monitors in order to assess the real situation. Thank you for the info, HofTroy! My understanding from the one Trib article (http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-80865206/) was that the mayor was a supporter of adding at least some noise monitors in order to assess the real situation. I don't think there have been any monitors east of #5 at 6314 W. Rosedale Avenue (approximately Nagle & Peterson: http://www.oharenoise.org/PDFs/noise_monitors/2014/5_ORD%20Permanent_noise_monitor_locations_with_flight_paths.pdf).

It's surprising to me, though, that even with the new monitors, there won't be any east of the 40th ward. Ever more people live under the flight paths (many in highrises) as you approach the lakefront and there's more pavement, which compounds noise.

And then there is the question of the lakefront as a natural environment. Last weekend I was at Montrose Point Migratory Bird Sanctuary (a significant Natural Areas Inventory site) and was just amazed at how loud the planes were passing over the sanctuary.
