Yard Waste, Trash Issues

A neighbor of ours is filling our trash cans entirely with leaves. We've asked (in person, nicely) for this to stop, but we weren't taken seriously. I'm not sure what we can do next. Would we be fined for having trash cans full of yard waste? Should we request an extra trash can for our neighbor? We don't have enough space for our trash now. Thanks, everyone!

  • David Lightman Part time head turner, full time jaw dropper

take the can, pick it up, & dump those leaves ON THE GROUND!

  • My garbage men & women instructed me to put my leaves in my cans. It was not necessary to use bags, and I shouldn't waste my money. Yard waste is no longer being picked up separately. Your bagged leaves will be dumped into the truck along with your household garbage. This is the word from the sanitation workers.
Remember, the leaves season is almost over, so give your neighbors a break.

Garden Help

Senior with bad knees looking for regular garden maintenance. St. Ben's area. Visit my lovely garden every two weeks or so and help me keep it in top shape. My lovely perennial garden was replanted in 2014. Let's hope it's less attractive to rabbits in 2015.

What's Burning?

We're at Rockwell and Gunnison and there is a ton of smoke and sirens on Lawrence. Anyone know what's going on?

  • It was a garage on fire off the alley between Talman & Washtenaw, just South of Lawrence. No one was hurt, not sure how it started, but did hear a loud boom before sirens...unsure if it was related though.

  • Listen to a police scanner.

Anyone have a rec for someone to fix jets on a tub? Also need to have our fireplace checked out.

Our tub and fireplace have been busted for a while...don't know who you call for either. Is it an electrician or a plumber for the tub? And do you call any fireplace company? Is it pricey?

Thanks!

  • American Heritage Fireplace 3054 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60618
    (773) 862-8200 They guarantee their work. You need that with a fireplace. Highly recommend.

Items to donate

A while ago someone was asking for kitchen items to donate to a homeless initiative (I don't remember if it was a group, shelter, etc). I had a bunch of stuff collected and some clothing items as well. Then she disappeared after having several missed connections for pick up. I have a pile of stuff in my appartment that myself and my husband are tired of looking at but I wasn't sure where to donate. I have sent stuff to Uptown but if there is something in my neighborhood (Albany Park, Ravenswood, Northcenter area) I'd like to send it there. Anyone have a preferred place to donate items?

  • tk lincoln square family

I donated to American Indian center yesterday thanks to this thread. Cool building by the way!

Where are your favorite places to look for rental housing?

I have used Apartment People in the past, and have been looking at Craigslist, Domu, and Chicago Apartment Finders. Do you have a favorite property management company in the neighborhood? Thanks!

  • LisaMV friendly Lincoln Square neighbor

I've used just about every service in this city over the last 10 years. The most recent guy I worked with was so far the best. Not sure if he's still there but his name is Adam Ballog with Blue City Apts. He was very helpful, listened to exactly what we wanted and found the prefect place for us! Good luck!

  • We live in a two flat on the first floor and rent out the second floor. We never advertise with any apartment service because they charge too much. We always advertise on Craigslist and I strongly suggest using that service because there is no middleman. We have never had a problem getting tenants and tenants are happy. Because we live on the first floor, my husband fixes anything that is broken right away, and if there is a problem we are instantly available.

I take it you must already have the shades? I would think that most places would come over and take measurements of your windows, order them, and then install them for you. That said, they should be pretty easy to install yourself. If they're inside mount then you just need to screw some brackets into each side of the top of your window frame. If they're outside mount then you install the brackets on the wall above the window which will probably require some drywall mounts to make them secure. I realize you didn't ask this, so I would also recommend calling Dads Handyman Service if you really don't want to do it yourself. How many do you need to hang? I would try to find someone that will quote you a price and not an hourly rate.

Neville, a 6 year old male cat, grey with white markings and green eyes, was lost Wednesday night, November 12th, at 9pm on Campbell Ave between Lawrence and Leland. If found, please message me as soon as possible!!!

  • I've seen your posters around. Any luck?

  • Yes, we got him back! He was under a woodpile in a neighbors backyard. Thanks for asking. I thought we'd gotten all the posters down, but we might have missed some.

Looking for a worthy cause to donate childrens toys/home stuff to...

We like to rotate out our still-newish toys and home stuff. Rather than send to Salvation Army for resale, we were hoping to donate to a cause here in Northcenter. Maybe a shelter or support center for single moms/dads, etc.

Ideas? Recommendations?

  • Ravenswood Community Child Care Center (RC4) provides very affordable child care to teenage parents (in addition to full-paying parents from the community), so long as those teens are pursuing their high school diploma or college degree. To donate toys to these kids, you can contact the daycare directly (www.rc4cares.com) or contact Parenting PROgress (http://ravenscov.org/mission-outreach/parenting-progress/), a program that provides support for these parents and their children.

  • SixtyTwoPercentWater Neighborhood Blogger

Thanks all for the recommendations. We went with HGS and they could not be any more appreciative of the donation. I feel like the things went to a good place.

Places to walk in the woods and hour from Lincoln Square

Tomorrrow is going to be a sunny day and we would love to find some woods to walk in with in an hour of here. Any suggestions.

  • Thank you for all the great ideas. We had a wonderful afternoon at Ryerson Woods and are now aware of the other parks.

Residential winterization services?

I live in a condo that has cold wind drafts coming from the windows and baseboards. Was curious whether anyone knew of a company that would provide winterization services to address these issues? I looked online and could only find plumbing/pipe winterization services. Appreciate any referrals!

  • A friend of mine has this company which will come out and assess where all of the issues are in your home (they get into every nook and crannie to see where the real culprits are) and how to fix them:

  • Thanks to all of you for these very helpful tips!! Really appreciate all the useful information. Hopefully with these resources, the expected Polar Vortex II will have nothing on me now, especially when I'm in my toasty warm condo!! Thanks again.

Snowbirds?

Yikes, this is the first time I've seen so MANY large flocks of migrating ducks/geese (?) overhead in such a short time. In the past few days, I've seen (and heard - they're loud enough to be heard inside, at which point I run outside to take a look) multiple flocks of what look like up to fifty/sixty or more birds flying in perfect formations...and headed south. Anybody else enjoying the show? Any birders out there know if this concentrated...

In the past, I've seen flocks migrating, but never so many in such a short time, directly over this area (St. Ben's). I guess it's not just OHare that's changing their flight plans.

Icemaker repair

In need of someone qualified to figure out the problem with my refrigerator's ice maker (side by side, frigidaire model, front dispenser). I replaced it about 10 months ago, and it has never worked properly. The last person I had out seemed to make it worse, so I'm looking for someone who has experience with this sort of thing. Any recommendations?

As the clothes are worn by professional models and presented under special lighting with music, the shows are believed to be the best way to present designers' new looks.

Not all brand names can participate in such events, however. The ones that can are usually those enjoying profits from fairly large operations, since such shows naturally come with a high price tag. Most brands introduce their new styles in an exhibition format, in which clothes are simply hung up for display.

  • Waters Elementary School reviewed by a parent

I have two children, one who is now in high school and another still at Waters. I am so thankful for the fact that I live in the neighborhood and my children can attend a school that they have NEVER been made to feel unsafe. The teachers and administration have a zero tolerance policy on any type of bullying and for the more than 11 years that I have been a parent I have never seen an incident of violence or bullying on the playground ,EVER, nor have my children ever come home to tell me about any such incidents . For the most part there seems to be a great deal of respect between the teachers and the students. I also want to share that my son who always struggled in Math has in the past two years gone from a 1 percentile (yes that's right) to a 33rd percentile carrying a high B average this year with NO help from his parents. Mr. Gil , along with my son's other teachers came together and put a plan of action out for him including after school tutoring and before school tutoring . I think Waters School is doing everything right , I am sorry to hear parents who have had negative experiences but that's not the school experience my family has had at all.
