When a middle-class Jewish boy from New York enrolled at a Swiss boarding school in 1971, the lessons in swordsmanship and elocution were hardly the strangest things he encountered. Unchaperoned boys were often sent with minimal supplies on expeditions into the frozen Alps for multiple days.

Younger boys, barefoot and without gloves, cleaned pubic hair and dirty gunk from the drains of the common showers (which dispensed cold water). And once the doors in the dormitories closed each night, supervision, minimal as it was, ceased.

Even faint rumors of the behavior in the anecdotes from Allen Kurzweil's new memoir, "Whipping Boy," would trigger lawsuits today. Kurzweil's roommates forced him to swallow painful quantities of hot sauce; they whipped him with a belt while playing "The Thirty-Nine Lashes" from "Jesus Christ Superstar;" they hurled his most treasured possession, an irreplaceable family heirloom from his deceased father, out the window of their fifth-story room. The worst of the bullies threatened to throw Kurzweil out the window as well.

"Boys will be boys" doesn't capture the gravity of their behavior; "boys will be sadistic little monsters whose victims suffer lifelong trauma" is more precise. Suffice it to say that boarding school made a lasting impression on Kurzweil. He was a middle-class Jewish kid from New York, but his peers were the sons and daughters of bankers, aristocrats and heirs to vast fortunes. He was soon nicknamed "Nosey" in sneering tribute to his Jewish roots.

Stop signs are not optional.

I know this is a recurring theme here on EB, but come on folks. I've watched numerous kids and parents walking to/from school nearly get hit by people coasting through intersections by Bell. It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.

  • astat Welles Park Neighbor

I watched a school bus roll (roll might be too generous, because it didn't look like the bus driver even slowed down) through the stop sign on Lincoln in front of Lincoln Quality Meats/Lincoln Square Athletic Club this afternoon. That intersection (is that even the right word for that mess?) is an accident waiting to happen if I've ever seen one.

  • Teamharman Back from the sunny south

I think school bus drivers are some of the biggest offenders. I'm at Bell and Waveland and I watch them cruise through the stop sign at top speed daily.

I walk my dog every day around the time school gets out and I can't tell you how many times distracted drivers with their children in the car have rolled through stop signs on Byron or Grace and have almost hit us. Its obnoxious. If I did that in front of their house with their children playing outside I don't think they would like it one bit.

Speed Cameras on Foster

I am not sure if this topic has been covered before, but I have a question about all the speed cameras, especially on Foster. Is the city equipped with cameras that record your speed on the side in which the camera is located, or can the cameras record car speeds from across the street? I have researched this a bit and found that over in the UK there are speed cameras that can record from both sides of the highway/street. But I am not sure if it's the same for the city. Does anyone know for sure?

  • I think she's referring to the one on Foster east of Kedzie by River Park. I've wondered the same thing, actually.

  • Ravens Yes.I can fix that.

There doesn't seem be a general ( read logical ) order to them. Much like signage that accompanies them. How does a camera know who is or is not a student. A judgement call if you ask me. Maybe they have an algorithm for judgement, or a pre-programmed profile of a student.
My other question is about bicyclists. When are they going to takes pictures of them not playing nice in traffic? Done ranting, Thanks for cyber listening

He has since been neutered since being in my care, he still has claws and no microchip or collar. After taking him to Treehouse, we have discovered he is FeLV positive and I can no longer keep him in my home due to owning a cat already. I am looking for ANYONE at all who can help in any way. I have found a suitable overnight boarding situation but otherwise, he will be sent to animal care and control and his diagnosis will result in euthanizing. I am looking for anyone who may know the owner of this cat, has any resources to find a foster, or can aid in helping to get this guy a home. Please let me know if anyone can help this guy out at all!!!!! Thank you!!!

I don't know the owners/people, but they're in the brick two-flat (only two-flat in the block) on the east side of Wolcott a bit more than 1/2 up the block north of Winnemac. See if she answers to Grissle? If so, I'm sure her family (4 kids) is missing her.

1142 W Irving Park Speed Camera

Is anyone else receiving suspicious tickets from this camera? I've not gotten 3 tickets from this camera over the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, I never speed through there. I always double check my speedometer before crossing onto the block that the cemetary is on. On top of that, It's almost impossible to be doing 11 over the speed limit through there on the way home from work during rush hour.

  • Teamharman Back from the sunny south

A woman was killed there crossing by that "park" a couple years ago. I believe they put up the camera shortly after. Anyone know if there is a camera on the south side of the street as well or just the north side? I don't speed (yes, I'm that guy you hate to be behind) so I don't pay attention to camera placement.

  • I believe in this location the camera is only on the north side

The Cindy Shearin Group Real Estate Properties 15 Tax and Investment Planning Tips for 2015

Well, the year 2015 has just started and for the benefit of our readers we will like to share with them ‘Fifteen important tips for Tax and Investment Planning’. These tips will surely help every tax payer to save some portion of his income-tax and also proper planning for his investment. Here are these fifteen tips:

1. Cut down your tax payments

The first theme for the year 2015 should be to cut down all your tax payment and this is possible through two vistas. First is taking advantage of all exemptions and deduction and second is ensuring Income-tax file for every member in the family. If you are able to take care of these two vistas only then surely your year 2015 would be a wonderful year bringing lot of money for you as a result of tax planning and also making money grow for you by proper planning of investment based on the changes made by the Government relating to investment strategy in whole of year 2015.

2. Planning for elder family members

The next step in tax planning is to plan for a separate independent income-tax file of your Dada, Dadi, father and mother. This can be done through gift by you. Likewise, you can think of taking out Mediclaim Policy for your aged parents and this can help you to cut down your income-tax because you can enjoy additional deduction under section 80D amounting to Rs. 20000.

    Cynical Politico,

I take all you say into consideration and again, just do not get it. Supporters are like leaves, they may be part of the landscape, but fall away and do not make up the core of the tree. While the tree may feed them to an extent, the fact that a wind, a squirrel, a kid or even a spring rain or fall storm may alter that leaf's existance and relationship to the tree, it's the core I am concern about, so I can not take one posters comments to alter my view of anyone, but the person who posted the comment. I don't believe Alderman Pawar shares all of your views or comments and do not base my opinion of him by your comments, for you are the only one who owns your thoughts and your comments.

Now I will reveal a little more about myself, I am against Montrose Green too, and for a number of reasons. My first and biggest concern, was when I asked the Ward, what about the rest of the block, concerning zoning, I was told they do it 'one building at a time'. I did not see this as having a forward looking view. After the community meeting, I did something Alderman Pawar did not do, I walked up to people and asked their opinion, whether they spoke out at the meeting or sat there and listened. I engaged.
When I temper the Ward's office view of "one building at a time" with a comment Alderman Pawar made in the run up to his first election that, concerning zoning, that
'it is not the place of an Alderman to pick winners and losers' I am left saying to myself
Alderman, you are indeed picking winners and losers. It has been 6 weeks since the Dec 10 community meeting on Montrose Green and still no word from the Alderman, what should I think?

Neither you or I know what went on with Mariano's and only time will tell if a needed grocery store should have included the use of the full lot, all the way back to Argyl and not have residential housing built where it got built. Maybe it should have been all retail, a communiy shopping center. I know that Hayes Property is looking to convert the building at Lawrence and Ravenswood, northeast corner, into 122 apartments.
I know that many on Wolcott and Argyl like or don't mind the 157 units built behind Mariano's but when I went over there to ' engage' the neighbors about the parking and density most told me they did not like it with 2 couples seperately telling they had to park their cars 3 or 4 blocks away from their residences.I did not know the 157 unit development was going to charge their tenants for a parking space, I do not think the Ward office or Alderman did either, for it is hard to call some studio unit or 1 bedroom apartment affordable and charge the young resident another $150 or 200 to park. What then makes that development affordable, parking on the street in an already very dense neighborhood? What is the Alderman's big picture view of the neighborhood?. The Area? The Ward?

I love this neighborhood, it’s my favorite in the city and I’ve been very happy here for many years. It’s very safe. However…
You’ll be right next to the Western Brown Line stop. That means a lot of extra people, cars and so on. You’ll also have to deal with Germanfest and other events in/near the square. My good friend lives on that block, and has had no problems aside from having to deal with bar and festival crowd noise. He's easygoing, and it doesn't bother him at all. He’s on the 2nd floor though.
It’s a higher risk area for break-ins, made a little more acute by being garden-level. But that’s nothing to be alarmed about if you make sure the apartment is secure. Make sure the doors are solid with locks that work. All of you windows need to be secure - if they’re bare glass without bars, there is no way I’d live there.

Lastly, because it's garden level, ask the landlord and/or neighbors in the building if there are any flooding issues. It's awful to get a great new garden level apartment and find out a few months in that all your things are going to get wet on a regular basis.

Overall, it’s an excellent neighborhood and is easily one of the safest in the city.

  • The area is generally safe. Yes a few not so great things have happen but it's wayyyy better than other neighborhoods. And I honestly think some areas are better than others. For phill after I attended Amundsen high school, I learned that the area your nephew lived in was not the best part of Lincoln square, due to gang activity. With that being said I wouldn't live past Lawrence or western. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you know the proper way to throw out a real Christmas tree? Can it be put in an alley next to the garbage/recycling cans?

My neighbor asked me this question and I'm curious what the answer is.

  • A dry Christmas tree next to a building (especially one with a wooden porch) would be an arsonist's dream. I'd suggest taking it out to the garbage man when he shows up, if possible.

  • This website offers tree pick up for recycling for $15. I was under the impression that your building is fined for trees left outside in the alley. Many in my building used this service. http://dtrt-recycling.org

We didn't let him in but called a locksmith for him...locksmith has just called us back to say he didn't meet them at the address he indicated he lived and isn't answering the phone, so now we're pretty suspicious. Not sure what his intentions are, but something just feels wrong about his story and wanted to give folks the heads up in case he's up to no good. If you get a similar knock on your door, please alert 911 and probably best not to let him in.

I have two laptops that I'd like to sell for parts. I'm not expecting much, but would rather pocket a few bucks than just send them to recycling. Does anyone know of a place on the northside that buys computers for parts?

Thanks so much!

How old are these laptops and what models? I wouldn't expect much, if anything really.

I should add, whatever you do with them, it's a good idea to remove the hard drives and destroy them.

Stolen vehicle

I watched a flat bed truck race up my alley (3900 block between Hoyne and Hamilton) with a black Jeep looking vehicle hanging off the back at 3:20 am,Monday Jan 23, 2012. When I ran to the alley and put a bright flashlight on the truck, the driver made a very wide turn westbound onto Hamilton knocking over several dumpsters in the process.

I called 911 and gave a description of what I saw, when I turned the scanner on, I heard the call go out across the 19th district, but didn't hear another thing about it.

If this was you vehicle stolen, contact me via EB and I will get back to you.

  • Anyone heard where they are dropping them recently? Mine was stolen a week ago from River West, have been searching craigslist and just drove up and down Wolcott along with Diversey and Damen.

  • My 2011 Ford Fiesta was stolen from the 3900 block of Oakley last night or early this morning. What's funny is this is the second time this happened to me on this street, last time was a black 2002 Jeep Liberty back in 2006, and it happened on a Sunday-Monday as well.

Looking for radio (car) repair hobbyist/shop

I have an early 1990s car with a radio that seems to be acting up. Or, the speakers need their amps looked.

I need someone that can bench-test both.

I tried Yelp and Google. Neither are helpful. I guess it is a dying craft.

Anyone know of a hobbyist or electronics shop in Northcenter?

  • Ravens Yes.I can fix that.

You might be all wet on this one. I have replaced many car stereos for various reasons similar to yours. If hear any kind of noise from the speakers that means they are ok. Everything else is inside the stereo. I think a junk yard is your quickest & least expensive answer. They are fairly easy to remove. Hope that helps.

Robin--Thanks for the info about pay-to-play in Angie's List. How did you learn of this? It's despicable!

  • Most of Mr. Carlsons Buildings are Section 8 ,which means some tenants might not be all that.

  • Mickie, not to put anyone down, but Mr. Carlson keeps good control of his tenants. Section Eight screens them first, and if they have anything on record they will not be rented to by Mr. Carlson. He also rents to cash tenants. All his buildings are secure and well kept....

Mickie, not to put anyone down, but Mr. Carlson keeps good control of his tenants. Section Eight screens them first, and if they have anything on record they will not be rented to by Mr. Carlson. He also rents to cash tenants. All his buildings are secure and well kept. His tenants are all quiet. I worked for him for 1 1/2 years and met 95% of his tenants in that time. He does not allow riff raff to live in his units. Also Mr. Carlson will not put up with garbage. He is a decent landlord. I live in one of his buildings and it's quiet.
