Night Out in Lincoln Square

Hey there thinking about a night out in Lincoln Square what do you recommend as an "itinerary?"

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

The Davis and Caro Mio on Wilson.

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

I love Caro Mio too. And the Daily when the patio's open...otherwise it's too noisy for me. Los Nopales on Western is wonderful. And Selmarie for dessert...

The Koyal Group Info Mag: Eksperter bekymre Ebolaviruset kan Spres Lett

loud banging, thrashing, booming

Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Once in a while, there is a boom that shakes the foundation of the house. After wearing ear plugs with my head next to a large floor fan on high, I was still woken up by tremors.
The neighbors all claim that they don't hear anything, but I don't see how that is a real possibility. One night, after the earth shook me awake, I walked outside at like 4am and started thrashing on the garage next to our house... loudly. I literally took the side of my fist and started pounding this old loose garage with bursts for about a minute. This was a warm night with people s windows open. Nobody stirred. I walked around afterwards for about another min. Nothing. Another night at like 3-4am, I walked out into the basement of the two flat we're attached to with tenants inside, slammed the door behind me, started rummaging through our storage, walked back outside, slamming the door behind me and slammed the fence under their bedroom windows repeatedly. I talked to them the next day and they said they heard nothing.

Now, I am not a light sleeper. I used to live above a bus stop on Ashland and Irving park. I slept like a baby over there. Either this neighborhood has gone rogue or the house is having night terrors.

I've been sleeping at a friends house recently so my blood pressure doesn't start boiling.

This is ruining my life. The police aren't going to do anything (talked to them already). Cameras are too expensive. I have a strong feeling it will be a complete waste of money.

My fiancé can confirm the noises.

  • Sunflower6876 Loving life in Lincoln Square!

I know there was a house that was demoed on Leavitt between Grace & Irving Park. I don't think this happened in the middle of the night, and is a bit too far from you. Maybe try exorcism?

  • Hmmm, I commented on your post when you lived on Grace/Bell. Same issues. Weird. Are cameras installed yet?

Let's not forget, @bob from ncenter, many (most?) of those workers getting a pension are not getting Social Security. My mother is a retired kindergarten teacher who, long before the recession, would go up to 5 years without a raise. She does not get Social Security; her monthly pension check is $1,600. It's not like she's getting rich.

Flat Tires Bell/Addison

Heads Up: woke up to two flat tires on the passenger side. As I was walking down the block I spotted another car with the same problem. Unlikely that it's a coincidence.

@#$ degenerates...or maybe this is a diabolical plot by the tire shops nearby to drum up business. That'd be sick.

    Something similar happened in 2012

They gave me a dirty look, and as I walked away they went into another room. I was worried about this, next week, tires slashed. Coincidence? I think not. I also think they don't need patrols. I don't want to see my favorite neighborhood turn into a cop hangout where EVERYONE is watched, i mean, don't you hate it when someone is watching over your shoulder when reading a book, or when someone won't stop asking questions when you're trying to watch a movie? I think this won't happen again, these punks wouldn't hit the same place twice. Although it does tick me off that my tires were slashed. Oh well.

I think it's pretty clear that any restaurant that is going to survive these days needs a heavy balance of PR and good financial business sense (Not to mention killer food and service) I wanted to try this place but it totally fell off my radar. I suspect they are doing the same thing Troquet did- likely trying to sell their business liquor license and all so that a place doesn't have to start from scratch and takes months/years to get up and running .... and to do that they likely can't say they are closed. Probably lose less money being closed though- than being open at this point. My two cents...

Eyebrow Threading

Are there any good eyebrow threading places around Lincoln Square/Ravenswood? I used to go to a great lady down in Lakeview, but I just can't get there as easily anymore and my eyebrows look a little scary!! Alternatively, someone who gives a quality wax would also work - basically I need these caterpillars off my face. :) Thanks.

Sewing classes

I am a beginner sewer and I was wondering if anyone offers sewing classes in this neighborhood. If you teach classes or one-on-one, please let me know.

  • Check out the Korean-American Community Services Center located at California & Cullom in Albany Park. They have beginning and intermediate sewing classes.

  • You may want to check out Dabble. https://dabble.co/ I didn't see any sewing classes in the area currently (there are some featured at Bridgeport Art Center), but they do pop up. There are also other classes like screen-printing, leather working, and embroidery.

Found: chubby orange housecat

This cat was hanging out on the sidewalk in front of 4447 N Wolcott. It was very friendly, well fed and didn't seem like an outside cat. I couldn't take it in so he's still outside. It went into the gated alley next to the building so I'm hoping it knows how to stay safe. It was cold but seemed ok for now.

  • This is hilarious. I'm sorry you are all missing your cats, but this just made my night. Especially the Chest/Not Chester picture lol.

  • This cat has been a fixture of the neighborhood for years. He/she is fearless and friendly. If this cat were on Fousquare, it would be the Mayor of Ravenswood.

Electric Aggregation Program

I received a letter in the mail about some electric aggregation program for the city. It says a few things about how the program saves us money if eligible, and there's an automatic enrollment. Anyone know more about this, or if/when it's a good idea to opt out? I'll read the docs myself, but wanted some community feedback to counter-balance it :)

  • Andrew this one is a minefield and I am just starting to step through it. I look forward to some discussion from more knowledge folks than me.

The aggregation program did have some good upfront pricing, but like most good things (without disparaging the folks at the City of Chicago) the back end could be worse for you (it would be super bad for our house to be in the aggregation over winter).
    There is a pretty neat calculator to see where you stand ( I am not sure whether Citizens Utility Board are good folks or not, they seem OK);
    http://www.chicagopowercalculator.com/
Then you can decide which way to move. Integrys was a bust for me, which leaves me back with Comed OR one of 30+ other providers competing with Comed. The 30+ providers are a huge mystery...which is my next project...
The other catch is if you go back to Comed you need to switch to someone other than Comed if the city negotiate a new deal with Inegrys.

  • Ah, I'm a renter right now, and have only been back in the city for a few months (only have one data point for the power calculator right now). I suppose living in a building that has boilers/radiators changes the equation quite a bit.

  • We are not large users which was part of the aggregation fail for winter.

Dog Bite

Hi neighbors, my husband was out on his morning run this morning and a large dog bite him. He noticed a woman with a small dog and a large dog on the sidewalk so he gave distance and ran on the parkway to avoid the woman and the dogs. The larger dog pulled away from his owner and bite through two layers of clothing and broke skin. He exchanged numbers and is on his way to the ER.

Any suggestions on the next steps?

  • Ashley Werth is dead on. I smell another lawyer lurking...

  • Speaking from the pov of someone that was bitten by an English Mastiff (185 lbs), you definitely need to report it. The dog that bit me had an unreported bite history. I found out he had bitten 2 people before me. Being rude and defensive as an owner gets you nowhere, your dog - your responsibility. Do the right thing and deal with your dog's actions.
Lastly, I hope it hasn't turned your husband fearful of dogs. Not all dogs or owners are bad. Good luck to you.

Coyote sighting

Last night I saw a Coyote by Winnemac and Western. I was in the car, however, a young man was walking his dog which barked and caused the coyote to run up the alley.
Just need to be aware. I called 911 and they connected me to 311. I was told they would report it to Animal Control.

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

If you'll re-read the article you linked to you'll notice that it was the *reporter* who claimed coyotes were being released for the purpose of controlling rats. The actual quote from the Animal Control guy (an unfortunate choice of words, to be sure) was, "His job is to deal with all of the nuisance problems, like mice, rats and rabbits."

  • Yes, Joan, I noticed that. And already agreed with you on the clarification.

Good Spot to Buy Furniture?

I just moved to the neighborhood and was wondering if you knew a good spot to buy furniture in Chicago at a reasonable price?

I'm mainly looking for living room furniture (couch, table, TV stand, etc.).

Don't forget craigslist.org and ebay classifieds.

  • Marco from Tropoje Two-flat owner

My initial thoughts were of Roy's, but only if you intend to keep it for a while. It's not cheap cheap, but affordable and of really great quality. IKEA is my go to store for cheap, decent furniture that I don't mind leaving behind if I have to move.

I understand that it has been a cold and snowy winter, but it shouldn't change your level of responsibility as respectable owners. It is bad enough that at the end of the sidewalk leading out of building complexes is the landing strip for all of the dog urine in the world, but I could look past that if the steaming piles were removed.

The area in particular that I'm referring to is on Wolcott, north of Montrose, south of Sunnyside on the east side of the road. There are probably a dozen big dog turds laying on the snow and even one on the sidewalk. Some new, some old and crusty. It's disgusting. If I had small children, I'd be pissed as these are not "road verges"(?) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_verge) that I'd want my kids walking on or playing on.

It is at the point where the next nice day I'm going to go out there and clean it up myself. I'm just sick of seeing it.

  • Phil L, the city certainly is still baiting, in fact they came through a week or so ago and baited along some of the alleyways in St. Ben's. Here's a number you can call if you can point them toward specific evidence of rat infestation (for example, small holes in the ground that lead to their burrows and tunnelways). They will bait inside the hole and seal it off, so pets in the area should be safe. Just give them the location of the spot. The number is 312-742-7287.

Instead of posting in a 7 month thread why not create a new one? That way the first part of it (where many people start reading) will not be filled with people who may not be active any longer, that's all. Internet forums 101.

They are used to transport staff, media and Secret Service that accompany the president (the president still travels in a conventional helicopter).
