Ravenswood Metra Station Opening?

Does anyone have any idea when the station is opening? I know it's about a year overdue, but I can't find any updated info with new dates.

  • David Barnett Lived along Ravenswood since 1997.

Only northbound. They have not even started on the southbound station yet. At this rate, expect a 2019 opening for that side!

  • SBloom architect, dad and a half, 25 years north side

I was told they need to finish some work on the far west section of track before the station opens.

place that buys old computers for parts?

I have two laptops that I'd like to sell for parts. I'm not expecting much, but would rather pocket a few bucks than just send them to recycling. Does anyone know of a place on the northside that buys computers for parts?

Thanks so much!

  • Nk

How old are these laptops and what models? I wouldn't expect much, if anything really.

  • Nk

I should add, whatever you do with them, it's a good idea to remove the hard drives and destroy them.

1142 W Irving Park Speed Camera

Is anyone else receiving suspicious tickets from this camera? I've not gotten 3 tickets from this camera over the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, I never speed through there. I always double check my speedometer before crossing onto the block that the cemetary is on. On top of that, It's almost impossible to be doing 11 over the speed limit through there on the way home from work during rush hour.

  • d3 NOH

If I were you, I would never vote for anyone in the current administration so as long as THIS camera remains in place.

  • d3 NOH

also, I would be suspicious if you were tailing someone, as you would've probably been in a rear-ender in real life. There seem to be more people willing to slam on their brakes to go 20mph...

And also, check your car's speedometer w/ your smart phone app. In my brand new VW, my speedometer is actually slow. You can enable the setting to see speed in Waze.

  • CynicalPolitico Political Consultant, Geek, Policy-Wonk Wannabee

Jeff- public school parents love Pawar. You may not like his work but parents do and that's all that matters. Fiedler's answers to Tribune are laughable and a clear contrast between Pawar...a University of Chicago education in policy versus Fiedler's career as a developer and car sales. It's not just the elite education, Pawar just knows more. I don't agree on everything he's saying but when push comes to shove I want someone who understands the issues over some 'neighborhood' dope.

We have reported it to police. Said his phone was out of juice but when we offered to charge it, it showed plenty of life. We didn't let him in but called a locksmith for him...locksmith has just called us back to say he didn't meet them at the address he indicated he lived and isn't answering the phone, so now we're pretty suspicious. Not sure what his intentions are, but something just feels wrong about his story and wanted to give folks the heads up in case he's up to no good. If you get a similar knock on your door, please alert 911 and probably best not to let him in.

Teen wants to volunteer at animal shelter

Will be 14 this summer and would like to help out at an animal shelter. would prefer to work with dogs. Any suggestions?

  • DB

Chicago Canine Rescue off of Elston - we adopted from there and staff was pleasant to work with and had a great selection of dogs to choose from.

  • Jane Spec North Center resident

I have heard that if your under 18, what you are aloud to do with the animals is limited, and its common for shelters to even require an adult to accompany kids while volunteering if working directly with animals. I'm sure due to liability. Probably lots of cage cleaning and things to do though! Its nice to hear about a young person being proactive in wanting to helping animals!

  • You or another adult will need to volunteer with him.

Stolen vehicle

I watched a flat bed truck race up my alley (3900 block between Hoyne and Hamilton) with a black Jeep looking vehicle hanging off the back at 3:20 am,Monday Jan 23, 2012. When I ran to the alley and put a bright flashlight on the truck, the driver made a very wide turn westbound onto Hamilton knocking over several dumpsters in the process.

I called 911 and gave a description of what I saw, when I turned the scanner on, I heard the call go out across the 19th district, but didn't hear another thing about it.

If this was you vehicle stolen, contact me via EB and I will get back to you.

  • Anyone heard where they are dropping them recently? Mine was stolen a week ago from River West, have been searching craigslist and just drove up and down Wolcott along with Diversey and Damen.

  • My 2011 Ford Fiesta was stolen from the 3900 block of Oakley last night or early this morning. What's funny is this is the second time this happened to me on this street, last time was a black 2002 Jeep Liberty back in 2006, and it happened on a Sunday-Monday as well.

Soba

Would anyone be able to recommend a restaurant that has great hot/cold soba noodles? I haven't been able to find many (any) places that offer anything other than yaki soba.

Thank you!!

  • Katie H. AP-er

Sunshine's cold soba is delicious (as is everything else there.) And I will travel out of my way for Wasabi's spicy garlic ramen. Sunshine is more homestyle, Wasabi a bit hipper, but both are really good! I always feel satisfied and extremely FULL after a trip to either.

Neither take reservations, and both tend to get crowded, so try going on a weeknight or early-ish on a weekend if you don't feel like waiting for a table. Oh and both are BYO. Schwing.

  • ShogunScott Living in Lincoln Square since 1982

Sunshine cafe IS AUTHENTIC Japanese food. Still owned by Japanese people. That is the only spot for you to get soba noodles!

Everything else is inside the stereo. I think a junk yard is your quickest & least expensive answer. They are fairly easy to remove. Hope that helps.

BoJ may extend deadline expand loan schemes next week

TOKYO: The Bank of Japan may next week decide to expand two loan schemes aimed at encouraging commercial banks to lend more and extend them beyond their current March expiry date, sources familiar with the central bank's thinking said.

Many BoJ officials feel that the programmes ought to be continued beyond March. But there is no consensus yet on details such as how long they should be extended for or by how much they should be increased, the sources said on condition of anonymity.

If the nine board members can reach agreement, the BOJ may announce a decision next week, the sources said.

If preparations take more time, the decision may be delayed until next month, they added.

"There seems to be decent demand among banks for the loans and if so, there is no point ending the programmes" when they expire in March, one of the sources said. Under its "quantitative and qualitative easing" programme, or QQE, the BoJ is buying government bonds and risky assets aggressively in a bid to double base money in the economy and achieve its 2 percent inflation target.

Tone down on the alley honking

I ask that people give the horn a rest when pulling through an alley, especially before the sun has even shown its face. Slowing down and looking is a great alternative to blasting your horn and making unnecessary noise.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

That's why they call them accidents. Watch out for the other guy, pedestrian, child, stroller, pet, car, bicyclist alike. You can't have too much safety, or be too careful.

Thorek Hospital hidden fee

When you call to make an appointment ask the upfront if there's a facility fee or not. If in doubt get it in writing when you arrive.
This has been legit and under the radar for about the last seven or eight years. Because it is a revenue generator for the hospital, it has become more popular. As such, it has come on the radar of patients, insurance, and physicians who refer To other providers. Drs. don't want their patients getting double billed either. This was a cover article of medical economics last month. There's a good chance that charges Would be waived if you contest it with the hosp admin
I've been to Thorek alot and had great experiences.it was not sot great up until a few years ago. Most of the doctors are excellent, hard-working and dedicated -If you haven't been there recently you'd be surprised. The entire plant Has been renovated, Including the emergency room, laboratory, radiation oncology, MedSurg floors and outpatient OR facilities. There is an ophthalmologist and brand-new dental suite. There are several new physicians in the outpatient professional building which is connected-Check to see if their offices are independent with no facility fee or -other. Most of the nurses in the hospital are relatively new hires within the last five years and are young fresh and vibrant.
This is an interesting little community Hospital which has survived changing times for over 100 years -worth asking for a tour or just going over for lunch and walking around to get a feel for the place. It's definitely a convenient option for outpatient procedures and services. Easy free parking

Halfway through Peter Carey’s new novel, “Amnesia,” I began to worry I was suffering from it.

Who wrote this tedious mess?

Where was that two-time Booker winner who gave us such spectacular novels as “Oscar and Lucinda” and “Jack Maggs”?

Readers may have trouble remembering the jacket copy, too, which describes “Amnesia” as a cerebral thriller involving cybercrime and international intrigue. That’s true for about 20 pages. Carey, a former advertising executive, knows the importance of a great hook, and the opening of “Amnesia” couldn’t be more relevant and exciting:

“It was a spring evening in Washington DC; a chilly autumn morning in Melbourne; it was exactly 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time when a wormCar entered the computerised control systems of countless Australian prisons and released the locks in many other places of incarceration, some of which the hacker could not have known existed.”

Because those computer systems had been designed by American firms, the worm instantly spreads through the United States, too, breaking open thousands of prisons, including secret black sites in [REDACTED] where the CIA keeps [REDACTED]. On computer screens across the world, the group behind this apocalyptic amnesty announces: “The corporation is under our control. The Angel declares you free.”
