Un - Neighborly Letter

Yes, our garage door was bent in Feb. from the weight of the snow. Yes, I am sorry our garage is old. We left it open because we were afraid it wouldn't open again once we it got it closed. We have sensor lights that go on with movement. Yes, we do want to fix it...The condescending attitude of this letter is terrible - - especially since they didn't have the courtesy to sign their name. The writer hides behind "CCA" and a PO Box. They are a neighborhood bully. Does anyone have knowledge of this group or the source of this letter? I tried to attach a jpg of the letter.

Malnatis Open This Winter

Per Pawar's weekly email, final permits coming soon. They expect to open this winter. I'll take that bet right now.

I like the retro sign they put up. Looks good. As tacky as the Golden Angel sign was I couldn't help but feel a tinge sad when it came down. Was such a throwback to another time, as was the restaurant.

Missing person: Mother 86, black top and pants, disoriented

Hello everyone. My mother wandered out of my apartment this morning sometime before 9:30. A police report has been filed and they are looking everywhere. She is short, med build, brown/gray hair, wearing black top, black pants with orange waistband, hair might be in pin curls or down approx shoulder length, possibly only wearing socks, no purse, identification or cards or money. She has dementia and will be disoriented. Last known location is Lawrence and Paulina. Please call police with any info at all. Thank you so much.

What's in a Name?

Why is the media calling it Ravenswood? I grew up a block away and it's always been called Lincoln Square. A tragedy to hear of the violence at the 2200 block of West Winnemac. D__mn these border changes. Darn them to hell! (Insert Heston waving fists at Statue of Liberty buried in Winnemac Park)

I noticed this morning 3 kids in alley 1 east block of damen smoking weed. I let the police know. I also suggested they patrol alleys before and after school. Yesterday, in the park, there was an elementary school girl (8th grade) looking to buy drugs. Everyone knows she needs help and her aunt is on the LSC at Chappell which seems odd. If her own family doesn't know how to help her, what can we do to help the at risk kids? I hate to elevate to DCFS or police and just would like to see healthy options for the kids. Does anyone know why Chappel does not have good programs?

  • Sunshine, that's great you reported that to the cops. We should have more beat cops patrolling our streets and keeping it safer for all of us.

Loose dog at Horner Park

There is a black dog that's been at Horner Park since 6am. Looks well taken care of but is alone, frightened, and hard to get close to. Please get the word out.

  • What a great ending!

  • 42 days from Highland Park? That poor dog had some journey. Glad to hear of a happy ending for him.

Coyote in the Hood

Hey everyone. Just wanted to mention that I saw a pretty big coyote at 7am. He was in the alley between Paulina and Hermitage at the 4400 block. He wasn't looking for trouble with us (me and 2 large dogs), but he was just behind a neighbors house, who I think has chickens...Just a heads up.

We've gotten about a dozen calls from Rahm's side. Nothing from Chuy.

Tho Chuy did make an appearance outside my kids school shortly before the first election--there are few parents in the hood who are very pro-Chuy, and presumably orchestrated it. Believe that that is mostly about the school board--which cannot be a bona fide elected body w/o action from Springfield.

John: I agree that debates are probably the best way to get a sense of the candidates. As far as Harold Washington goes, we would be lucky to get someone like Harold again. Never was the Mayor's office as open to community groups as it was during the Washington administration. He knew that he had to get white and Hispanic votes as well as black votes to get reelected, so he spent his time in neighborhoods all around the city. I knew people in his economic development office and they all were very dedicated to bringing resources into the neighborhoods. Garcia just does not have the same voter base as Washington did, nor does he have the same sheer charisma. That is not to say that Garcia isn't very dedicated to making neighborhoods a top priority. He is, and that's his strongest suit. But I got to see Washington close up, working a crowd, and he drew energy from being with people like no politician I have seen since. He loved people of all colors.

Daycare Near Ravenswood

Hello,

I am looking for any day care suggestions in or near the Ravenswood area. Anything down Ashland or Damen would also work well as I commute that way for work.

I all really need are names as I will call them all and speak with them personally.

Thank you all in advance

  • +1 for RC4 - ages 6 weeks-5 years, though usually a wait list

+1 for Twinkling Stars Preschool - ages 3-5 years

  • I should have mentioned that this would be for infant care, but I appreciate all the suggestions!

Undecided voters...what would get you to vote for either Mayoral candidate?

On the fence? Any one thing that would sway your opinion?

I don't know that I'm voting for Chui or Rahm. For me, I'd reconsider Rahm if he immediately implemented a Mayoral 2-term limit; and if he convinced the aldermen to implement a 3-term-limit on Aldermen (grandfathering existing Aldermen, oh, of course), I think he'd run away with the race. So much of the trouble we're in now could've been avoided if we didn't have a life-time Mayor sitting on fixing the major issues whilst hoping for good luck to occasionally sweep them away.

New business?

Morning neighbors! Does anyone know what is going in to the (Tbs Ayub Agunbiade) old restaurant space next to LA Tan on Lawrence between Maplewood and Rockwell? I saw some people bringing drywall into the place this weekend and am eager to have something useful take the space. (Hopefully not a bank - while useful, not that exciting.) Side note: Is Jack and Ginger's gone from the corner space?

  • LisaMV friendly Lincoln Square neighbor

Hmm, I see, BerkeleyGirl, I wonder if it's a landlord/rent issue. I was happy when the dog place took the one corner, but now it looks like they've moved away too, it's such a shame having them both empty.

The world’s largest social network is stepping up its work in cyber security by teaming with other technology companies including Yahoo and online scrapbooking site Pinterest. The platform will enable companies to share clues about how hackers are behaving in the hope of preventing security breaches.

As cyber attacks hit companies from Sony Pictures to health insurer Anthem, the private and public sector are under pressure to work together to understand their adversaries. Hackers join forces and share tips to break into networks but so far, communication about cyber defence has often been haphazard.

Mark Hammel, Facebook’s manager of threat infrastructure, said ThreatExchange had been developed from a system that Facebook was already using internally to make it easier to catalogue threats to the site in real time.

Looking for a short-term dogsitter

My wife and I are seeking someone to stop by our place to keep an eye on and tend to our 13-week old Morkie puppy. He's not quite used to being by himself all day, and unfortunately we need to be away.

Date: At least March 10-12, maybe a few more days on either side
Time: At least 5-6 hours/day
Where: Near Ravenswood and Wilson
Tasks: Keep an eye on him while he's in his pen; play with him; clean up after him; keep him fed; usual puppy stuff.

Just let us know a little about your background and your rates to chicodes101@gmail.com. Thanks!

Saw a coyote wait to cross traffic at Ashland and Leland, then nonchalantly walk right down the sidewalk by Chase Park.

  • Send the coyote our way to sort out the incessant shrill yapping mongrel a couple houses away

  • Ravens Yes.I can fix that.

Did the Coyotes owner tell it to stop & wait for the light? The coyote seems a little brighter than some bicyclists. Not all bicyclists!!

Looking for radio (car) repair hobbyist/shop

I have an early 1990s car with a radio that seems to be acting up. Or, the speakers need their amps looked.

I need someone that can bench-test both.

I tried Yelp and Google. Neither are helpful. I guess it is a dying craft.

Anyone know of a hobbyist or electronics shop in Northcenter?

Robin--Thanks for the info about pay-to-play in Angie's List. How did you learn of this? It's despicable!

  • SixtyTwoPercentWater Neighborhood Blogger

All - I am still looking. Surely there is a guy/gal in a basement somewhere with a soldering iron and a box full of electronic parts looking for work.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try another angle (look up electronics dealers and back into repair persons.)

Emergency on Lincoln

Anyone know what happened on Lincoln, by Bad Apple/Jewel last night? We were coming home around midnight and the street was blocked off there with firetrucks, ambulances and police. Scanned the news this morning but haven't found anything.

  • There was an apartment fire on the east side of Lincoln ave. If you know where the store Embelish is, it was one of the apartments above it. I could smell the smoke on Cuyler and then heard sirens about the same time around 1130pm.

You can finish your 16 hours with all the training requirements for Utah, Arizona and Florida non-resident CCW permits in addition to your Illinois License! This will allow you to carry in 32 States.

If this is of interest to you contact us at chicagocarry@windycitymail.org and we will send you the details for the course.

  • I am interested as well. Just sent you an email.

I looked at the calendar for Maxon and I don't see the class, when do you do the shooting?
