Absurd and Humiliating Dress Code Policy at Chappell Elementary School

If you are considering sending your child to Chappell Elementary please be aware that the Principal has a ZERO Tolerance Policy for not wearing a clean white shirt. If you are considering sending your child to Chappell Elementary please be aware that the Principal has a ZERO Tolerance Policy for not wearing a clean white shirt. Even if you have a note saying your washing machine is out of order and you send your child with a light gray or navy shirt - your child will be forced to change into a dirty, smelly shirt with writing in huge letters front and back - "LOANER". Even if your clothes are totally appropriate and you are in 1st grade. When I went to an LSC meeting to just bring this up - the Principal called 911 on me. That started to give me concerns and my suspicions were confirmed in May. My son is gone from the school so we can now speak up without fear of further retaliation. I am happy to meet with anyone personally to show all of the evidence I have. Please do not send your child to this school until the Principal is replaced. He is a threat to children and he has been manipulating the LSC. It is very difficult to even find out when the next LSC meeting is and how to contact anyone on the LSC or even get the minutes of the meetings. The Alderman and School Board have been contacted but due to the privacy of the children involved we all do not want this to have to go to court. Please help this school and the families that are really suffering from the fallout of his actions.

The best way to voice your concern is through Alderman O'Connor at ward40@cityofchicago.org. He is aware of the situation but says the more parents that can email and stand up against this absurd policy the easier it will be to remove him. There is no way to contact LSC members via school website or even find out dates of the meetings which are always during the day. Compare transparency of Waters Elementary to Chappell Elementary Website so you can see how hard he makes it for parents to complain about this.

Well don't you think parents should be aware of the punishment? Why do you have to demean the kids? Why was it o.k. with a teacher for the child but Principal overrules the teacher?

Why wouldn't he let me bring in up at the LSC if he was so proud of it? Why did he call my son into his office to tell him to stop telling his mom to tell me what is going on at the school? Why don't I have a right to question the LSC on such an absurd policy? It is a system of shaming and grooming and opens door up for all kinds of retaliation against parents who want to challenge absurd policies.

  • So it's ok for your kid to break the rules because your washing machine was broken so an exception should be made for your kid? If a kid is one point shy of failing a test should they be passed donut doesn't demean them ?

The dress code is there for a reason. If the policy is that they wear a loaner then use your efforts to change that policy.

She takes "her kids" everywhere (zoo, museums, play dates, music class, library, etc) and also teaches them alphabet, counting, reading & speaking in English and Spanish. She can cook, light cleaning, kids laundry. Please let me know if you are interested and I can put you in touch with her. I am not comfortable putting her information on a public board. Thanks!!!

Excellent, now the rooftop owners are suing the city. This costs all of us money. When

are they going to quit bellyaching and produce a product people will buy...without being parasitic? Look at the restaurants all around the field. Do they need to have line of sight? Seems like they view it as a right.
All I know is that it is wasteful to sue the city - and the taxpayers are left footing the bill.

  • MikeyJoe Rocket scientist

I'm still trying to figure out on what grounds the rooftop owners can sue. If the Ricketts family accepts that 17% of $0 is zero when all the rooftops go bankrupt, then that's their prerogative. What's the penalty for violation of 6.6 by the Cubs and/or the City? It's not stipulated in the contract.

  • painhertz butterknife ninja

Arbitration. According to the contract all disputes will be solved via binding arbitration. The rooftops' threat to sue never existed. Most like it was easier to say than "we're going to bindingly arbitrate you".

Agreed that there are wait lists for some places. However, there are a number of newly opened and newer daycares in the neighborhood and I'm not sure they have the same waits as some of the more established daycares.

Also, for what its worth, our son's preschool class takes them out everyday. They go to local parks, the library, downtown, museums, etc. Some of these kids take public transportation more than their parents do! The younger classrooms go on walks around the neighborhood and participate in some of the local activities that do not require public transit.

That said, while some daycare facilities offer a nominal discount for the second child (10% off), I agree with everything else mentioned about cost for two being less with a nanny or au pair. Though, come to think of it, you might want to explore Chicago Public Schools (http://www.cps.edu/Schools/EarlyChildhood/Pages/Preschoolprogramtypes.aspx) ... there are a number of tuition-based preschools that might be less expensive than the private options (we never explored them, so I can't say I'm knowledgeable about them).

I did put my daughter in the preK when she was 4, and there were a few 3 year old but it seemed to work better for 4 year olds. Unfortunately probably not an option close by for this year if you are not already enrolled as most of the ones in the area tend to be full with waitlists pretty quickly. And the costs are going to be comparable to a nanny (about 1200/mo per child and no 2nd child deduction) plus you still have to figure out what to do for vacations, days off).

Need a good computer repair service

Hello fellow frustrated computer users:
I need to get my laptop repaired (keeps freezing, won't respond) and would like to know if you have any recommendations. I'm thinking of taking it to Computers Zone USA at 1134 W. Belmont. Has anyone used them? I live in North Center and want someplace I can get to by El. I can drive if I have to.
Thanks for any help.

Not sure if you have already taken care of this, but before doing anything, I would recommend backing up your files to an external source (Hard Drive, Thumb Drive etc) Also once you back your data up, you could try restoring your computer to factory defaults using the supplied restore disk or restore partition (if you are comfortable doing this) It's free :) If your computer is freezing and wont respond, its either a hardware issue or a software issue. If software, wipe and reinstall Windows and all of your software (this is what the repair people will do.) If still problematic then send back to original manufacturer for repair or to one of their certified repair centers.

The Group was based on the simple notion of neighbors helping neighbors, with the idea that job seeking should never be a lonely experience. Among other things, the hope was to tap into the so-called "hidden job market" at a neighborhood level.

The Chicago North Center Jobs Group is still on Facebook, currently at 65 members: https://www.facebook.com/groups/679871012048118/ I may remove "North Center" from its name, maybe replacing it with something representing the broader Ravenswood/Lincoln Avenue area.

Harassment at Damen and Lawrence.

Walking to the train going South on Damen on the East side if the street. Right after I passed through the crosswalk, a man at the bus stop yelled, "I HATE YOU!!!" Then he lunged at me and screamed, "I HATE YOUR UGLY QUEER A$S!!!"

I yelled that I'm calling the cops and he ran across Damen to get on the Lawrence bus going east.

A woman in her car rolled down her window and asked if I was ok. I continued to walk to the train.

He has blondish reddish hair, fair skin, and a mouth full of rotting teeth. Was about 6 feet tall.

If I had mace he would have really gotten it.

Beware. It was terrifying.

Martial arts/Self defense

Hi,
Does anyone have any good, affordable recommendations for a place in the area to take martial art or self defense classes? Thank you!!

  • Bryan Duffy Apartment Locator & Problem Solver

Degerberg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts is great for beginners and all types. Gets you physically fit and mentally aware. More girls than guys in some of the classes, too. Classes 6 days a week at two locations to choose from. First class is free. After that its about $100-$120/month.

  • My son (6) has been taking classes at ATA in Ravenswood and I really like it there. It's not too "beefcakey" if you know what I mean, and they also keep running Groupons (There's one right now, look for Go2Karate) so you can try out a bunch of classes for next to nothing ($20 for 10 classes or $30 for 16 classes, uniform included).

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF THE DOG BUT A PRETTY CLOSE MATCH. His ears and tail are a little longer.

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

  • If anyone is willing to meet over there some evening or on Saturday, I'd be happy to help try to catch him. Sounds like it may take a group effort.

  • Does anyone know if this is the same terrier recently found at Damen further south? That dog did not have a collar

Growing Spaces community picnic and placemaking event happening now!

Come out to the lot at Wilson and Ravenswood from 11-6 today for free lemonade, ice cream and popcorn. Bring a lunch and enjoy some oldies and this gorgeous weather. We've got games and art activities for the kids.

Brought to you by your friends at The Ravenswood Community Council and Midwest Pesticide Action Center.

  • Hi, I stopped by, there was no picnic

  • SC

The picnic was Friday. Appreciated the effort, but not really much place to picnic. As future tip, if you are going to encourage people to picnic and it's a huge gravel parking lot either have picnic tables besides where art projects are going on or volunteers themselves are sitting at and eating or tell people to bring their own chairs, tables, or blankets. Also, invite some food trucks or engage the neighboring business so people can have food handy.

  • Malika- Sorry that you had trouble finding us. We were in the lot at Wilson and Ravenswood from 11:00 am to about 6:30pm. What time did you come by?

SC- Glad you stopped by, and we appreciate the feedback. We did have a landscaping company set up those grassy hills...

SC- Glad you stopped by, and we appreciate the feedback. We did have a landscaping company set up those grassy hills we were hoping people would use, but you're definitely right on providing more table space for people. And food trucks are something we've definitely talked about for the future. We'll be having a food truck roundup as a part of the RAW Detour for this year's Ravenswood ArtWalk. October 4-5, if you're interested in marking your calendar!

Did Homemade Pizza Co go out?

I walked by the other day and noticed a "CLOSED" sign on the door that looked permanent, does anyone know if they're gone for good or what may be happening with it?

  • Lance Uppercut crazy cat lady

Nk, ever hear of "beating a dead horse?"

  • BillDahl Lifelong North Sider

This dead horse can stand a little more beating--as dk humorously noted, the business model of Homemade Pizza was a faulty one. If I drop as much money as they charged, I expect it fully and professionally cooked--otherwise I settle for one out of Jewel's freezer!
