Washtanaw and Lawrence ave

Does anyone know what, if anything, can be done about the crosswalk signs that had been placed, but are gone now, at the crosswalks at the intersection of Washtanaw and Lawrence ave? The spring signs have been run over so many times, they fell off and had been thrown away. Peoe drive so crazy up and down there and I've already seen one person crossing get hit by a car!

  • Rachel D. just hungry

None of those signs make any difference, sadly. I'm east of you, at hermitage, and cross frequently there (where pedestrian signs are very clearly posted) and no one stops, ever! I have even had to pick up and run because oncoming cars don't show any signs of slowing. It's really scary and frustrating!

Cars (and bikes) not stopping at stop signs in Ravenswood

I walk home from the Metra up to Foster Ave, usually on Wolcott. Seems like almost every day the cars in the area either do rolling stops, don't seem to stop at all, or take off when I'm halfway through the crosswalk. Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done?...

I don't like having to worry when I'm following the laws and being a safe pedestrian, that I'll be hit by a car or bike.

  • North, agreed. Especially during inclimate weather. Ten seconds longer waiting at a crosswalk is nothing for a car, who will be back up to 30-45mph soon after.

  • @North, I hear what you are saying, and my comment was 100% directed at people that seem to be just fine to pick up the pace to get into the crosswalk, then pull out their phones and take their time crossing.. For me the impatience grows when it's clear that...

For me the impatience grows when it's clear that the pedestrian is walking slow on purpose.. I try really hard to be that patient driver, and have even had cars honking behind me when it's clear that the pedestrian is being as courteous as possible when crossing the street, and I've given them the time to do so..

@Brian, thanks for your comment, in bad weather we should all be patient and understanding, drivers and pedestrians alike.

Great cook and good with kids needs room to rent

Looking to rent a room near my job in Ravenswood (or on L/bus lines to get me there). It is a small entrepreneurial company who helps nonprofits with digital marketing, so money is still tight and can only afford to pay up to $450. I'm quiet, easy going and happy to contribute in other ways:

* Am a great cook--healthy and tasty meals usually--but can also make the "comfort foods" we all love too.

* Some child care--as the eldest of 7, helped raise my younger siblings, plus recently I've taken care of my friends' kids when they've gone out for the evening & when they've gone to Europe for 2 weeks. Can provide references

* Have 20+ years in sales & marketing, so if you need some help with marketing your business--or just need someone to type your manuscript--happy to help.

* Some personal care assistance--worked in a hospital many years ago plus experience working with family members who have challenges (my 25 year old niece was born with a neural tube disorder and my aunt had ALS)--so could provide some assistance to you.

I'm a nonsmoker and I don't drink (food allergy). My cat is quiet and shy--and we are looking to move by August 1st. Look forward to meeting you!

Catherine, you still haven't turned on the personal message function. To turn it on, you need to go to the top right dropdown with your username on it, and select "Manage your account settings", then "Email", and finally check the box that reads "Allow logged-in EveryBlock users to email you via your public profile page".

  • Catherine Dennis Artistic and Professional--with a Cat

    Feihong,

Thank you for alerting me! I thought I had enabled that but obviously hadn't. Appreciate all that you do to keep us functioning! :-)

    All the best,

Loud boom at 3am?

did anyone else hear the very loud noise in the alley on the 1800 block of West Warner last night. Maybe an M80? only saw smoke.

  • We definitely heard it on Wolcott. Woke us both up. It sounded very close to our place whatever it was.

  • Stephen Boisvert Lakeview pedestrian

I heard it at Broadway and Barry.

Advice Needed: Amending Building Rules

Hi - I live in a multi-family building and am working on some rule changes to propose to the board. I have a few questions and am hoping to get thoughts from others:

1) Do you have restrictions on renters and if so what kind of wording do you use?

2) Do you have restrictions on personal items in common areas (ie using those areas as storage areas)? If so, what kind of wording do you use?

3) To make any new rules enforceable do you have to add them to the building declaration or can you just amend the association rules?

Thanks!

  • Fast Freddy Grace and Leavitt

Grab your condo declaration and read through it. Restrictions on personal items are most likely addressed in a basic way.
Changing or adding a rule for something like capping the number of rentals is trickier. You will need 75%-80% of the unit ownership to vote for the change. The percentage...

Changing or adding a rule for something like capping the number of rentals is trickier. You will need 75%-80% of the unit ownership to vote for the change. The percentage required is stipulated in the Condo Declaration. Be aware that once the association is more than 50% rentals and not owner occupied, it becomes much harder for a new buyer to obtain financing from a bank.
As a former President of a 10 unit condo building, I can tell you it is very difficult to get people to agree to much of anything. So stay on top of it as best you can.
    All the best.

  • Preeti--thanks for that link to the Chicago Cooperator. I didn't know it existed and I think it will be very useful to me and my co-op's board.

The Last Pit Stop BBQ

Has anyone been yet? What were your experiences? Yelp seemed sort of mixed, would love to know if others have been there. I expected that they would have some bumps (everyone does when they first open), but that they should smooth out in time. I would love to see another restaurant in the neighborhood last!

  • I went there and it was a negative experience - extremely slow service for carry out, they got our order confused and had to start all over again, the ribs were incinerated to the point there was no meet, just char, the bbq turkey was dry, the sides were just...

I went there and it was a negative experience - extremely slow service for carry out, they got our order confused and had to start all over again, the ribs were incinerated to the point there was no meet, just char, the bbq turkey was dry, the sides were just okay and it was fairly expensive, imo, for what didn't even amount to decent bar food much less bbq joint food. They may have worked some of that out since I went, but it was pretty bad. My husband even walked the ribs back up there to get replacement ribs they were so bad - the replacements were somewhat better, but not worth the price or hassle.

  • I didn't have a great experience either. Portions were huge and BBQ was fine, but nothing exceptional. I was hoping for a better meal.

How's the new Mediterranean restaurant on Wolcott/Montrose?

Looks like it's grand opening was yesterday...no reviews yet.

  • Feihong EveryBlock developer, Lincoln Square dweller

Judging by the menu, It seems to be fairly standard Mediterranean, with a (very) few exceptions. But I think it's a little early to tell how it will pan out, since the menu is so small that I'm almost certain they'll expand it. However, if by "heavily Turkish" you mean something like Cafe Orchid (http://cafeorchid.com/), you'll be rather disappointed.

  • Elektra Owner, Everlasting Fire Studio

Well that is disappointing. But, I still will go try it when I get a moment. It helps to know what to expect! Thanks for the feedback.

Yard sale/garage sale ideas needed!

Hi. I live in an apt. building. I'm cleaning out and have a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell. Including a bicycle, some furniture, and a bunch of smaller belongings. Hi. I live in an apt. building. I'm cleaning out and have a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell. Including a bicycle, some furniture, and a bunch of smaller belongings. So - I don't have a yard, I don't have a garage, and I don't think my landlord would approve of me buzzing people into the whole building (and giving them access) if I have it in my apt. We have a courtyard, and I think I would kill all the grass and flowers if I had my belongings and people trampling on the grass all day. There's a very small bit of grass in front of my bldg, but again, I think my landlord would not be happy with the damage to the grass which is very well maintained.

I really need some good suggestions! Is anyone in Lincoln Square/North Ctr. thinking of having a yard sale or garage sale soon? Would you have some extra space, and I could pay you, barter, or work something out with you? I have too much stuff to bring it to a flea market. I am a friendly, considerate person, and we'd be happy to work something out with a neighbors or group of neighbors. Really need to sell some things soon. Thank you for any suggestions you may have!!!

no parking on damen/wilson

Anyone know why the east side of damen in the n 4500 block has no parking signs during the day? I see no activity there.

  • No department listed. Just one of those white signs with red and black lettering.

  • Could it be tree trimming operations? We just got post cards notifying us of tree trimming in our neighborhood from ComEd.

Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • Thanks everyone. My attorney's office has contacted the Texas DMV. My witness got the plate right. They won't release information to the attorney w/o a subpoena or updated police report. So we're working w/CPD. (though it may take awhile) Thanks for keeping your eyes out.

  • LStone Western and Lawrence

Kristin I am sorry you were injured and the driver behaved illegally. Sounds odd but it is encouraging to me to read how many people stepped up (and are stepping up) to help correct this wrong. I hold you in my thoughts for a speedy recovery and am grateful that Chicago turned out some really decent folks in the just the right place to help you through.

Wedding Planner Recommendations?

Happy Wednesday Neighbors,

Does anyone have any wedding planner recommendations? I'm in need of a day-of coordinator, but also curious about how much more pre-planning might cost (I'm just a notch above clueless). I'm mostly looking for someone easy to work with that knows what they're doing, can guide/work with me vs. work for me, and who won't break the bank...

Thank you in advance!!!

Package and mail ripped open - nothing actually stolen that I know of...

I live just north of Lawrence on Rockwell in a courtyard building with an outside locked door that leads to our foyer (door to stairwell also locked) and I had a package ripped open yesterday and some mail ripped open, but all was left behind. The person didn't actually steal anything (maybe the clothes I ordered weren't their taste), but I was wondering if anyone else in the area has had this happening to them lately? I would assume they saw the package and tried all the buzzers hoping someone would let them in thinking it was a delivery person.

  • You should file a report with the Postal Inspectors office. There is a rash of mail thefts/mailbox break-ins in the area that they are supposedly working on resolving.

  • Thanks, Candi, I will do that. I wasn't sure where to report. Zlatan--thanks for sharing.
