Comcast internet outage Lincoln Square...?

My internet has been balled up since last night around 3 AM, my line speed is all over the place, jumping from 0.1 MB/sec to the 50 MB/sec that I pay for and back again second-by-second. DNS seems FUBAR.The DOCSIS config file bound to my cable modem looks wrong, which has my cable modem saying "IPV6 ONLY" which doesn't really seem right either....

Comcast is acknowledging a problem on their Customer Account - Support page, I wonder how widespread it is.

Anyone else out there having Comcast Internet issues?

  • John P Manufacturer Ravenswood

There was a scheduled outage upgrade between 12AM and 5 AM. I received a robo call about it.

  • SLAlbanyPark Bald.

Comcast anyone ?

How widespread is this COMCAST internet issue today ?

We've been out (or barely running) all day over here near Lawrence & Rockwell.

Comcast first said it had been going on since last night and would be on again a 2:30 pm ... and then that time came and went.

How can I post this ? Very carefully - sneaking through a rare ultra-slow service point evidently.

(Comcast should seriously look into improving the way they handle their customers)

  • CCN New to Lincoln Square

Seems it's not just you. We have them coming out on Saturday to address the issue that's been happening on and off for weeks. They are worthless. They come out, fix one of the units and unplug another's. Seems it's all over the neighborhood though.

  • Same here. It's especially frustrating when working from home:/

Re Sun Times: "We need a mayor for all of us. Progressive Democrat Karen Lewis is considering a campaign against Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel," the writing says. Don't get me wrong, I respect Lewis. She's smart and fearless. She's also a left of Michael Moore.

Chicago Tribune trial I didn't ask for

Recently I received a letter from a debt collector on behalf of the Chicago Tribune. The company claimed that I owed $32.25 and that I needed to pay them immediately--or I could call them to plead my case.

Naturally, I called them. They refused to produce evidence of the debt or explain where it came from --other than to direct me to Chicago Tribune.

So I called Chicago Tribune. They claimed that I had signed up for a Tribune trial from a door-to-door salesperson/kid asking for a donation for their education. They said that I had been receiving newspapers for months (I hadn't) and they had been sending me bills.

I have no idea what they were talking about. Neither does my wife. We'd never seen a door-to-door Tribune salesperson, much less signed up for a subscription. If the Trib had sent any bills, we probably assumed it was unsolicited junk mail.

The customer service rep eventually credited the account, but not before admitting that there were others like me calling in about their own mystery bills.

My suspicion is that this door-to-door "salesperson" put us on the list without consulting us. I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this.

  • rkp

Sounds like you were scammed but were lucky that the tribune is a reputable company. These kids going door to door oft times work for an out state company that is subcontracted by a company like the tribune and the company receives a fee for each subscription they obtain Tribune may have even received this signed subscription but it was not signed by you.

Next thing I know, I get a passed due invoice. It was the first thing I had ever heard of it since I saw the kids. No other invoices, no papers, nothing.

I called and explained that, she eventually, after making extra sure I didn't sign up for it, put in a ticket to have it eliminated.

I wonder if some of these kids just wrote down names and addresses and turned them in.

Looking for Movers - insured/ licensed

We're looking for movers in a couple weeks, and were wondering what companies you'd recommend. I called 2 Guys & a truck, and their price quote was too high (for moving a very small apartment). What are your thoughts? Some of the places that have good reviews on Yelp don't have web sites or very findable sites, so it's hard to find out more about the company. I do plan to make calls, but would love to have neighbor input.

  • These guys were great: http://www.neuhausandsons.com/

Also, unlike others that I contacted, they had $1mil in insurance on our move.

  • We used OnTime Movers, who seemed to change their name to In and Out. First time, had a great experience. The second time took forever and it cost us a pretty penny. The third crew member was apparently new and being trained. They wrapped everything with tons of blankets and tape (things that did not need it), which they charged us for. Would not recommend them again.

LA Fitness in Ravenswood or Athletic Club?

Anyone have a garage space for rent?

I just moved up to Lincoln Square, but my apartment only has street parking and my car is a plug-in hybrid (Chevy Volt) that I would like to be able to plug in at night. I would of course be willing to pay for the extra electricity, though it doesn't use much. There wasn't any noticeable increase in the electric bill at my last place.

Let me know!

Apartment burglary

My friend's second-floor apartment near Damen/Lawrence unfortunately was burglarized during the day yesterday. Her laptop and jewelry were stolen, as well as a backpack to haul the stuff in, apparently. Thankfully her cute little cats were unharmed. The doors were bolted when she came home and no windows were broken, so they're not sure yet how the thief got in but they think he must have had a key somehow, possibly from/as a previous tenant.

That uncomfortable theory might raise questions of security and safety for all us renters out there. It also underscores the importance of having renter's insurance.

I hope karma bites that guy right in the a**.

  • Love how everyone always wants to screw the landlord. It takes maybe 5 minutes to change a lock. If you ask your landlord to change your locks and he doesn't do it fast enough for you, do it yourself and give him a key. It's a better route than hiring attorneys and going down that road.

  • b in edgewater/andersonville interested resident and business owner

I wanted to address the issue of always making sure you have renters insurance. People tend to think the builidng they live in is totally secure and they " don't really own anything". Break ins are traumatic and the last thing you want to deal with is worrying about who pays for what. Get renters insurance. Barbara Janusek State Farm agency on Broadway and Bryn Mawr will get you coverage for less than $12.00 a month.

Recent Mice Infestation in our Building

Just moved to the North Center this summer in the neighborhood that borders the river near Campbell and Pensacola, I was wondering if any other neighbors have had recent mice issues in their buildings or homes. My management company and veteran building neighbors say it is the first infestation they have seen. Several neighbors have moved out this month some due to the problem. Has anyone had any success with eradicating mice as a renter, if so any advise you can pass along about my rights or steps I can take to get the management company moving on fixing the problem.

Its really gross and and can be accompanied by a bad smell depending on how close the dead mouse is to your unit. My management co knows and is not taking steps to remove the bodies or eradicate the infestation.

Not trying to bring fleas around. Apparently it's a fix for rodents too. I honestly wish there was a way to have the management company step in. (Found out in my building they are willing to pay for "renovations" from 1 to 2 bedrooms, take out the dining room, and charge 6-700 more on rent. But are completely uninterested in eradicating this rodents issue. Long less gaining another dumpster.) Can't help but feel alone on actually fixing the problem, huh.

Nightly disturbances in alley south of waveland, north of addison, between hamilton and hoyne.

Hi,

For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been woken up every night by very loud, seemingly deliberate noises (garbage bin shaking, metal screeching, pounding) coming from my alley. At first, they were consistently occurring at 4:30am. The past few nights, I have been hearing them anywhere between 2am and 4:30am.

Normally, these alleys are very quiet. These noises in the wee hours of the morning are easily the loudest during any hour in that area with the exception of maybe garbage and recycling pick up.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Regular 4:30am disturbances anywhere sound like a pattern. Many Chicago bars close at 4am rather than at 2am. Late night drinkers/partiers going home from a 4pm bar sound more likely the cause than raccoons. I doubt that those staking out or trying to break into garages would deliberately make such noise. Drunken idiots seems to make more sense. I would think that calling 311 rather than 911 would be the correct option, See:https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal/page/portal/ClearPath/Communities/Districts/District12/Special%20Services/012RightCall.pdf
For the 911/311 When to Call List, 911 calls are for:
    Police and Fire Emergencies
    * Crime in progress
    * Immediate threat to life/bodily injury
    * Major property damage or loss
    * Dispatch of a squad car
If you are also getting other indications that you may be targeted, such an phone call hang-ups, letters, graffiti, threatening emails, verbal harassment, etc. I would call 911 and mention any previous incidents or details about you, your family, or home being targeted. If they are just making noise or a mess by the trash cans then it should probably be a 311 call. 311 is also the number to call for broken alley lights, alley potholes, dead animals or rat problems in an alley. If gangs are working the area the noise may be a signal to fellow in an alley around 4:30am is possible, but most would want to be nearer to lights and traffic if they are awake and wanted to be safer . Most thinking people with some common sense would not make deliberate noise. Many residents may be armed and may be in a bad mood after being awaken at 4:30am.
Why do anything to possibly provoke such a person into reacting badly or calling the police?

Day-time Home Burglary and Night-time Garage Thieves

On Sept 11th our home was broken into by criminals and several items were stolen with rooms and walls vandalized in the process. This was done between the hours of 9am and 1:30pm, but most likely around 11am. This is when a neighbor saw a white van parked behind our garage in the alley.

The police are investigating, but in response, we installed some Dropcams around the house and 36 hours later we caught a man in our yard at 3:30am. Below is a link to the video. Watch starting on the upper left side of the screen as he begins in our neighbors yard and make his was to the alley.

Did anyone notice someone walking in the alley while this scumbag was in the yard? Surveillance is great after the fact to help law enforcement track these thieves. I like to add deterrent elements so that the act will actually be thwarted and I won't become victimized. In addition to surveillance, I have motion activated alarms in my garage that give out a piercing sound when it detects movement. I have these connected to simple timers that power them up after a certain time when there are no in/outs in the garage. Gives me piece of mind considering what I have stored in the garage.

  • Do you mind expanding on how you did motion detectors with piercing sounds. I would like to do that

Advice on Electric

Just received a mailing from ComEd with option to switch to clean energy by signing the Clean Energy Option form. Has anyone switched? Do you think it's a good idea to sign up for electricity coming from renewable sources "like solar and wind." My initial thought is Yes! However, I made a switch with Peoples energy and tripled my bill. Any advice would be appreciated (regarding this). Thank you!

I've seen this offer from another provider as well, seems that's it's becoming more common. I think it's a great idea, but currently, the companies do charge you more for this option. Some apparently, charge more than others.

Addison porch robbery

I called police Friday, about 2:00 p.m.
after witnessing a male, black, with short dread locks, about 20-25 years take a package off a neighbor's porch then walk east on Addison street. He hung out at the bus stop at Addison and Wolcott, let the bus pass by, then crossed the street to take the package. As far as I know he wasn't caught.

  • This has happened to us 3-4x in the year that we've lived in Roscoe Village and a couple of times, it's occurred within minutes of the UPS truck leaving. The truck must be followed.

  • ChiJen, that is exactly what is happening. These thieves track delivery trucks, knowing that they will leave packages in unsecured locations if no one answers the door. I avoid UPS deliveries if at all possible because of this. I've never had UPS do this.

If you are having an item delivered by UPS delivery and suspect you will not be home to receive it, leave alternative instructions when you place your order for an item: "If no response at delivery address, please ring any apartment in bldg (or specify another apartment #)" or "If no response at delivery address, please deliver next door (give exact address)." I believe if you give an address close to yours, they will deliver as requested. At the very least, leave an instruction NOT to leave the delivery in an unsecured location.

On a whim I just checked out the cost of Macbook Pro replacement displays and they are outrageously expensive ($300-800 just for hardware). $600 for repair is a good deal as far as repairs go, and you're not looking for recommendations for replacement, but fundamentally it is important to know that you can get a non-apple device for far less. The initial response to this generally is that you know the apple interface and like the quality of the construction. In my 12 years of computer repair, a majority of my customers have needed their Macs fixed (both in hardware replacement and software irritations). The hardware in Apple products is the generally the same as what you would find in other non-Apple products and while the engineering (generally) is better, the life span of hardware (storage life and (recently) CPU hard/firm architecture) is the limiting factor for the life of the product and that will be roughly the same as any other well reviewed product. The laptop market is very close, but non-Apple is generally at a fraction of the cost. As for the user interface, if you look at screen shots of the user interfaces of all mainstream OS and applications, you can see striking similarities as many user experience designers come to a common consensus on the ideal computer/human interface (with current common input devices). I can't give a wholehearted recommendation for change as I don't know how you use your machine, but for the vast majority of people a $250 (sale $200) Chromebook would be more than sufficient and cheap enough to assign less worry to its well-being. Considering the cost of the repair you could buy a Chromebook, an external display, and a high quality Android phone (off contract) for seamless life and/or business device harmony. As a disclaimer, I just want to say I might also be biased by my irritation at some of the licensing choices Apple has made in the last couple decades, some of which make Bill Gates seem like Linus Torvalds.

You must have known I was in danger of sleeping in on this non-work day for me. Thank you, person who probably has a cell phone and could have called said passenger to notify them of arrival, for your brusque honk-honk-honk, a trinity of super quick cacophony, for not only making sure I saw the sunrise, but for testing to see if my sympathetic nervous system was working. FYI: It is. Thank you, because I frequently forget about it.

Thank you for honking when you could have easily double parked in a quiet & empty Lincoln Square to flag down/ ring the door of said passenger, because this way I get to imagine--for just a beautiful second--what it's like in New York or Hong Kong at noon on Tuesday.

Where, I must ask, did you learn such *spectacular* common courtesy? You must have taken a course from the early morning clamorous crew at Lake Shore Recycling Company. Those guys are common courtesy pros, frequently arriving at 5:45 or, on their more lazy days, 6:40 or so, and doing their job with *such* aplomb. Those guys know how to get it done, and by it, I mean making my Circadian rhythm like that of a mutable jazz solo. And I really like jazz, so why not syncopate my very being? • I do as Jeff does. No honk needed. The best was the other day, pulling out of my alley (which turns into another alley before getting to street) with a car right behind me. I inch slowly, stop and move on. She lays on her horn, despite the fact that she was only an inch behind me. Plus the fact that since I had turned, no car could be coming through from opp direction.

To reiterate what was said above, we all need to slow down, be patient, and get off our butts to ring doorbells. You are just shortening your lifespan if you are too stressed out and/or lazy to do the above. #endsoapbox

Looking for dog friendly apt/condo to rent

Hello Everyone, I have a friend who is looking for a dog friendly apt/condo to rent in Ravenswood/Lincoln Square. This person is looking for at least a two bedroom. Any suggestions you all have would be a big help. Thanks!

  • Have you tried Apartment Finders? I use them to rent my condo and the service is free to renters.

There is a 2 bed, 2 bath open in my building right now and our landlord takes pets on a "case by case basis" (meaning he really just likes to talk to you and make sure it's not some wild dog that will bark all hours of the day and destroy the yard, etc.). The last two sets of people that have lived there have both had small/medium sized dogs. I don't know what your friend's budget is but if you want to send me a private message I can give you more details.

There is one on Wolcott between sunnyside and montrose on the east side. It is a large brown brick apartment building often with bikes secured to the iron fence. They are always advertising 2 bedroom apartments. It's nice and many owners with dogs live there.

HANDYMAN

Can anyone recommend a good reliable handyman to do small job around a 6 unit building? I have made an appointment with two people already and neither one of them kept the appointment. It is in the Ravenswood Manor area. Thanks..

Wow, a little sensitive there, Robin? He asked a question and suggested an action for you to take. No one has attacked you. I have stated a few times that I believe it is unethical as a business owner not to disclose that in your postings when someone asks for a recommendation. He was soliciting your response following up on my earlier posting.

    3. There's a simple way to stop what you consider "attacks" because of your deceptive practice: Just Stop Doing It!

    4. I suggest you simply change your spiel to say, "I recommend our family business etc., etc."

    5. Problem solved.

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

  • What if we all go in together as a group? I have always wondered what it looks like inside!!!

  • I bet Dr. Who's Time Machine is in there !
