Smelly Dog

Got my furniture and rugs deodorized and cleaned...Thank God! But does anyone know why my large male dog stinks so much? My large female (different breed) doesn't reek like this. Both eat the same food, go to the same vet, etc. Vet says she doesn't know why he smells so bad...(he's not sick.) But a friend told me that her large male dogs always seem to smell worse than the females. Also, I was just reading a funny memoir and the author was describing how bad her large male dog smells......The description of the type of odor was spot on with our smelly pooch. He gets groomed. Should I start sprinkling him with baking soda?

  • McBean animals, art, outdoors

If this smell is recent and not typical for your dog, I would recommend you get him checked out at the vet. He could have a medical condition.

  • We tried Dynovite (or something like it) nearly 4 years ago. Didn't help at all unfortunately.

Flat Tires Bell/Addison

Heads Up: woke up to two flat tires on the passenger side. As I was walking down the block I spotted another car with the same problem. Unlikely that it's a coincidence.

  • About four years ago, I lived down the street from Bell. First, my tires were slashed. A few months after, they stole my passenger tires and put my car on milk crates! If history is repeating itself, you may want to get wheel locks.

  • CJL ...

I hear that it was over 60 cars in total bt Addison and Irving, Western and Damen.

Low Flying Plane?

My house literally just shook from what I think was a low flying plane? Anyone else?

  • Nan-Gladstone Neighbor

When Obama came to Chicago a few weeks ago, we saw four of those Osprey helicopter/planes and two army helicopters. They were flying pretty low - I thought they were going to land near the woods on Devon. They must be his new ride this year. Never seen them before.

Suggestions for a 2 year old/ classes/ activities thank you

Hello,

I am new to the neighborhood and I'm having a hard time finding activities for my toddler. We do go to the Old town school of music for an occasional class but was wondering if there's any other ones around. Yelp is not helping me at the moment. Any suggestions would be appreciated? Thank you :)

  • We had a good experience at Gymboree on Lincoln near Belmont. Bubbles Academy was terrific too but it might be a little far if you are trying to stay in the neighborhood.

  • Aquababies and Galter Center. Great classes.

Found: chubby orange housecat

This cat was hanging out on the sidewalk in front of 4447 N Wolcott. It was very friendly, well fed and didn't seem like an outside cat. I couldn't take it in so he's still outside. It went into the gated alley next to the building so I'm hoping it knows how to stay safe. It was cold but seemed ok for now.

  • Sorry for coming late to the game, I'm at work. Chester is still missing. I'll stop by after work to see if it's him. While the picture does not resemble him, it doesn't hurt to look.

  • The picture is a photograph, not an artistic rendition. If it doesn't look like him, it's not him. I think it's even possible the cat in this post is a female.

Eyebrow Threading

Are there any good eyebrow threading places around Lincoln Square/Ravenswood? I used to go to a great lady down in Lakeview, but I just can't get there as easily anymore and my eyebrows look a little scary!! Alternatively, someone who gives a quality wax would also work - basically I need these caterpillars off my face. :) Thanks.

Lost Quadcopter

I lost a RC quadcopter(helicopter) at Horner Park. I fear it may have gone in the river, but if anyone that walks, jogs, works, or is by that area and sees an aprox 1'x1' RC quadcopter with orange and green propellers please contact me. Will pay a reward if returned. Or call 847-370-1684

  • Dustin, so glad that we were able to get your quadcopter back to you! It looks like a lot of work went into it. Love to see you fly it sometime.

  • Dustin Dalziel lost quadcopter

Thank you again so much. Yes the time spent on it made it so much more valuable to me. I would love to show you and your family how it flies, maybe we can meet at Horner Park this coming weekend? FYI, what you found is called the "Warpquad" if you were so inclined to watch a YouTube video of someone flying one.

More irresponsible dog owners...

Today is the second day I've stepped in dog defecate, and it`s getting annoying fast. Yesterday on Damen and Berteau, today in front of my own home on Leland/Talman. I will be watching, and I'll bring it back to you if necessary. So sick of people who cage their dogs 20 hours a day and dont clean up after them the other four. Shameful. Insert appropriate profanity here. People and eb filters s-u-c-k.

  • Debby in Lincoln Square 20 yr. resident

I watched an owner let his dog pee on my front steps(wood) while my husband and I sat on the porch. Not to mention all the times my kids would play on the grass and step or sommersault into poo...that was fun. KEEP THE DOGS OFF PRIVATE PROPERTY AND ONLY ON THE PARKWAY OR MY KIDS WILL FOLLOW YOU HOME AND POOP ON YOUR GRASS/STEPS :) Have a nice day !*P.S. It's not the dogs (or kids) it's the owner (Parents).

  • I've noticed this on Foster Avenue as well. While picking it up and leaving it on the porch of the dog's owner sounds good in theory, more often than not, it simply isn't possible. It's enough to be watching so as not to step in it, and of course silently cursing the arrogant slob dog owner.

seeking garage space nov-may!

seeking reasonably priced garage space to shelter one car…from november to may. I use the car about once or twice a week on the weekends for errands. Let me know what you got or if you have any ideas. Thanks!

  • Misty Current Edgewater enthusiast & past Linc2 resident

When I lived in Lincoln Square between 2007 and 2013 I paid $75/month for garage parking, then $150/month in Edgewater for a shared 2 car garage. In Lincoln Square I always lived in the building (multiple apts) but Edgewater was a half block south of where I lived. Craigslist and simply driving around where you want to park to look for signs on garages has been effective for me. There's also a few websites, spot hero and parkopedia, you can try. Good luck!

  • Misty Current Edgewater enthusiast & past Linc2 resident

Forgot to mention you will likely have better luck signing on for a whole year than specifying you only want the space 7 months out of the year.

I understand that this is not her property, the city owns it. Recently she was outside following me and pouring bleach all over the grass. My husband has seen her sprinkling what we hope is only red pepper. None of this has stopped the dogs from using the bathroom on this stretch of grass. All of us dog owners are getting fed up with her harassment and we are worried she is going to start putting poison on the grass. We don't know if we should call the police or what to do. Has anyone been in this situation? Any advice? Is this legal what she is doing?

Pastry Chef from Beans n Bagels

Has anyone heard how the pastry chef from Beans n Bagels is doing now? I heard there would be a kickstarter campaign to help him while he's out of work because he was injured. But I never heard any more about that. Has anyone heard anything about how he is or about raising money to help him?

  • Their Facebook page had some updates a while ago- surgery went well. You might check for more details there.

Graffit and the cure?!?

I seem to have ended the graffiti that has plagued my building at Wilson and Wolcott .
( over 400 times this has happened!) I went to Sherwin Williams Paint Co. and ordered their anti-graffiti covering. If you are having a similar problem this might be the solution. It is quite pricey, About $105.00 per gallon. Your surface needs to be cleaned by the "Graffiti Buster" first before you apply the covering. My piece of mind was worth the cost. I will up-date you if I see this hasn't worked, but for now we are golden! YEAH!

  • The Crusty Pirate Old crotchety pirate captain (retired)

Another possible solution could be 'green walls'

http://goo.gl/ltX9DG <-- green walls google image search

The paint is intriguing though... i may use it in conjunction with 'green walls'.

  • The Crusty Pirate Old crotchety pirate captain (retired)

I'm inclined to think that any surface that doesn't present itself as a clean flat canvas would deter an aspiring 'artist'.

It would be an interesting hypothesis to test - using flat surfaces (control), corrugated surfaces, vegetated surface (green walls), open slatted surfaces, surface filled with holes, surfaces that are already randomly colored, highly textured surfaces, etc.... anything to 'break the canvas' and make it less palatable.

    - someone go try that ; )

Bike Accident on Ravenswood and Montrose

Yesterday around 8:30am, I saw the immediate aftermath of a bike accident at the Ravenswood and Montrose intersection (west side of the Metra tracks). Looked like a car collided with a biker while trying to head south on Ravenswood. I looked up once I heard someone scream and saw the biker on the ground and several pedestrians rushing to help. The biker appeared to be knocked unconscious. I called 911 and was told several others had already contacted them about the accident. I was on my way to work and didn't stick around to see the paramedics arrive. Anyone know if the biker is ok?

  • Stephanie, Mayfair Bike path rider, Northsider 44 years

As I've reflected on this thread throughout the week, this has been the take away. On any given day, as we navigate our urban environment, an environment most of us choose to live in, we have a responsibility to move from point to point with this concern of our fellow travelers in mind; that they are doing so as well, and wanting to get there safe and sound. How can we all contribute to that end? Getting there safe and sound together.

She was taken away in an ambulance, but I also have seen nothing further reported. I hope she is ok. A gentleman I spoke with on the street said he thought she hit the side of the car as she came down the hill and then flipped over the small car. Why?

I see postings periodically for apartments that are for rent but I get my posts removed when I'm trying to promote my massage business? The website - Next Door allows for posts like that so I think every block should too!! So do people actually flag these posts? I have to say if that's the case I would NEVER do that because it's bad karma!

Additional Filters Needed - EB Moderator?

Instead of just Thanks and Unneighborly, can a ranking system by relevance be used? That way people can add off topic comments that can be filtered down to a Conversation filter, and maybe a Fact or Answer button with relevant details upvoted? This would be used for description of a lost dog, result of an accident/investigation, etc. There will always be abuse for the buttons, but think the greater good may slightly edge out.

Looking for a parking space near Damen and Ainslie

Does anybody have a parking space available for rent around the 4900 block of Damen?

  • There's a stained glass business on the corner of Damen & Farragut that has had a "garage space for rent" sign in their door. I saw it about a week ago, not sure if it's still there, but might be worth a look if you want covered parking. Otherwise, I agree with WatchFUL40 - you won't find a better deal than the park lot.

I used to live around this area and checked with parking at the church. The rates are pretty reasonable, but they have stipulations on what times you can park there and what days. Also, you have to move your car out of the lot when it snows more than a few inches. I figured this made it not worth it to park there since the whole point of an assigned spot was to not deal with getting stuck on the street. The Damen/Ainsle/Lawrence area can be tough when it comes to parking, which is why I am happy that I moved to an area with much easier parking. Good luck!

Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Once in a while, there is a boom that shakes the foundation of the house. After wearing ear plugs with my head next to a large floor fan on high, I was still woken up by tremors.
The neighbors all claim that they don't hear anything, but I don't see how that is a real possibility. One night, after the earth shook me awake, I walked outside at like 4am and started thrashing on the garage next to our house... loudly. I literally took the side of my fist and started pounding this old loose garage with bursts for about a minute. This was a warm night with people s windows open. Nobody stirred. I walked around afterwards for about another min. Nothing. Another night at like 3-4am, I walked out into the basement of the two flat we're attached to with tenants inside, slammed the door behind me, started rummaging through our storage, walked back outside, slamming the door behind me and slammed the fence under their bedroom windows repeatedly. I talked to them the next day and they said they heard nothing.

Now, I am not a light sleeper. I used to live above a bus stop on Ashland and Irving park. I slept like a baby over there. Either this neighborhood has gone rogue or the house is having night terrors.

I've been sleeping at a friends house recently so my blood pressure doesn't start boiling.

This is ruining my life. The police aren't going to do anything (talked to them already). Cameras are too expensive. I have a strong feeling it will be a complete waste of money.

My fiancé can confirm the noises.

Extras needed for video in LS/Ravenswood area 10/22 & 10/23

Hi all -

We are shooting a video around the neighborhood next week and are in need of some extras to fill in a few scenes.

There are a few "featured" roles where it requires a specific look and others where we may just need a few extra people to round out the scenes.

If you are around those days during the day, let me know and I can give details of where/when it would be.

There is some small compensation based on featured or background.

thanks
