Recommendation for kitchen cabinets / granite countertops / painter

Hi, I have seen a few posts recently about general contractors and rehab, and although those recommendations may be adequate for what I am looking for, I thought I would post with exactly what I want done and see if anyone has a recommendation. I am looking to have the kitchen cabinets refinished/repainted (from brown to white), have granite countertops replaced (most are basic pieces but there is a large island with a sink, outlets, etc), and have about 2400 sq. ft. painted. On this same note, I am curious if anyone has any opinions on whether refinishing/painting cabinets white is worth it or if it is just better to get all new cabinets? The cabinets are about 6 years old and in good shape, I just like white kitchens.

For the painting, I prefer someone that can do everything themselves, such as preparing the space (moving/covering furniture, taking TVs off the walls and putting back on, etc.).

Perhaps the painting and recommendation for the kitchen upgrades would be different people altogether? Or maybe the painting walls and cabinets would be same person and granite someone else?

  • If you found a very skilled contractor to refinish and paint the older cabinets then could be worth the money. But it really depends on the condition of your cabinets. I considered this option but ended up buying something new because of damage. Consider this article before choosing:

I went to Massuply for the new countertop. It was for a rental so prices were reasonable and they deliver. They don't have a showroom but they brought samples. They do not install and overall had a very positive experience.

While researching, I also went here:
    http://www.buildersupplyoutlet.com/index
The showroom was huge and you could see lots of samples of both cabinets and countertop options. It's was a trek but good to see options in person. They do the installations.

As for contractors, I recommend Angie's List for your area if you don't find anyone from this forum.

    Good luck.

Thoughts on Bad Dog being Gone?

What are the thoughts on Bad Dog Tavern being shuttered?

  • They were always understaffed for lunch on that patio. Only one server for a LOT of tables on weekdays. Also, their kitchen vent clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while and there was a grease stain about 8 feet long along the exterior wall facing the patio. Just gross.

  • Botkin Kinch: the knife-blade

I got the worst food poisoning of my life from their ahi tuna tacos. It was a very memorable experience.

SO! I present an offer for the people of Ravenswood this:
Let me shovel your walkway for a small fee. Depending on the snow, I will come to your house however many times.

My perimeters will be Damen & Lawrence - Oakley & Lawrence, Oakley & Wilson - Damen and Wilson. Depending on how much you hate shoveling and have yet to do so this year, I will come to your house, too.

What do you say?

Newbie wants to know the necessity of 4WD/AWD?

I have three kids and I am trying to buy a family car possibly a mini Van. I am wondering if I need to buy a 4WD/AWD mini Van or will I be ok with a Front wheel drive/FWD mini Van?How important is AWD/4WD in the alleys in the north center area? My garage opens to an alley. I welcome your feedback.

  • Yes Shawn, I'm sure that the AWD and all-season tires contribute greatly to how well my Countryman handles in the snow/ice. So far I have not needed any assistance in getting out of my on-street parking spaces this season. I only recommend this car to people with no more than one child and it MUST have AWD!
(I don't understand why anyone would buy an SUV/crossover without 4WD if they live in a snowy area.)

  • D R

Also as an aside, as one of your key variables for your vehicle is the ability to fit three car seats across in the second row, take a look at the Combi Coccoro car seats. We have two in our sedan, with enough room between for an adult (sorry grandma) to sit in-between. We have placed a Britax inbetween as well.

One of the Combi's selling points is that you can fit three of them across in a typical sedan.

I know, cable is terrible... But, has anyone in the area, with Comcast, had an issue with a couple HD channels not coming in? Is it a provider or equipment issue? The lost channels seem to be growing in number by the day, first it was ones like Cooking and DIY, now its also NBC and FOX.

Missing campaign signs

Someone took the two campaign signs off our front lawn as well as our neighbors, very odd.

  • Who were the signs for?

  • Before or after the polls closed? If it was after, please let me know who the signs were for, I'm voting for him/her next time. I'm sick of all the campaign trash that candidates leave all over the neighborhood, especially outside polling places and around the el stops, and never bother to police up.

I posted a story as well. Man, you would think the Police would be looking out for this. We , fortunately , don't have to deal with violent crime like other areas. That being said, address what we do deal with over here. Property Crime!!!! We have to put the pressure on them. Might even be a good idea to make this an issue with our City council reps.

Campaign yard sign on parkway

So I'm a new member of the 40th ward after the redistricting (former 47th ward) and woke up this morning to find an O'Connor campaign yard sign on the corner parkway in front of my house. Now I don't own the parkway, but I do have to maintain it, and no one asked if they could place it there. I don't expect they'd remove it after the election either. I noticed the signs on other corner parkways as well.

  • Since my last post I was out for a walk so I decided to walk to St.Mathias where I voted and on the way I noticed where the O'connor signs were earlier are now gone and there are still daleiden campaign signs on the parkway it would be nice if her people who put them up remove them like oconnor's volunters did.

  • That's good to hear that some of them have been removed but volunteers should ask before putting them in the parkway in front of homes.

Butt of your joke?

While you may think it funny to deposit cigarette butts on someone's stoop, I find it tragic. Neither my wife nor I smoke and we don't appreciate the deposit of cigarette butts made on our front porch. Please kindly make a timely withdrawal. Oh, and an apology might be warranted on this one.

  • Teamharman Back from the sunny south

Again, it was a specific act of someone (one of my wonderful neighbors) collecting butts and placing them on my stoop as if my wife and I were their long lost owners. I'm passive aggressively shaming them here as I don't know who the culprit(s) was/were. Neither my wife nor I smoke.

  • Oh, I miss understood. That's just wrong!

Any Salons Specializing in African American/Kids?

I am about have two foster kids living with me, both African American girls. I know it's going to take me awhile to get the hang of their hair and in the meantime, I may need to take them to a salon. Wondering if anyone has recommended salons that will braid children's hair. Prefer Northside, but I am not sure I can be particular. Thanks!

  • I don't know of any in the neighborhood (we live in Lincoln Square - I'm black and my husband is white and we have 2 little girls). I get my hair done at Van Cleef's in River North also Yehia in the South Loop area and I know they are good with all types of hair. Good luck!

  • There are quite a few in Rogers Park/Edgewater. I would Yelp it and see what you can come up with. If you are looking for styles other than braids I know a friend who likes Paul Mitchel Salons and I know that Cally's Curls and Company on Howard is good as well. I would also consult YouTube or search for blogs for advice! Good luck!

  • The Cradle in Evanston is offering a workshop on African-American Skin and Hair this Saturday.

BTW, the top tier service is 105Mb, fast enough for 10+ people to use simultaneously. Fast enough that one person would have a hard time using it all. If you're the only one using it, you're paying for a service level you can't even take advantage of.

As I head out to vote today, I want to take a moment to request that my neighbors do the same. I've seen lots of encouragement on facebook, but would like to leave the request here among members of my community rather than just among my social network.

There are plenty of great resources online for information if you have questions about where to vote or aren't sure how you want to vote. If you have questions I'm happy to answer if I'm able.

@Robin in WRP; You got it right. An old friend of mine is married to a former Special Ed teacher at Austin H.S. She used to get up extra early in the morning to telephone the homes of her students so that she can get the parents up so they can in turn get their kids up for school.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

@Mike from The Square; I don't see how having more white kids in the school system makes a difference to anyone other than a bigot. As far as the pensions go for union workers go, you clearly don't live on a pension. If it takes a decent pension to attract qualified people for jobs, then employers should honor the promises made to those employees when they were hired.
